Conor Gallagher struck twice to condemn his former club Crystal Palace to a damaging 3-1 defeat on Monday and keep Chelsea in the hunt for European football next season.

The injury-ravaged Eagles were on course for a huge win in their battle to remain in the Premier League when Jefferson Lerma's long-range strike opened the scoring.

But Palace have won just three times in 19 games and were undone late on after Gallagher equalised within two minutes of the second half.

Gallagher fired home his second of the night and Enzo Fernandez added the third in stoppage time to lift Chelsea up to 10th and within two points of seventh.

Defeat leaves Palace still just five points above the relegation zone in 15th.

"It was extremely cruel but the game is about goals and unfortunately we made mistakes which led to goals," said under fire Palace boss Roy Hodgson.

The home side were decimated by key injuries with all three of their star players Eberechi Eze, Michael Olise and Marc Guehi ruled out.

Hodgson and the club's board are under attack from the fans and banners held up before kick-off took aim at a "weak club culture" and "weak transfer policy."

But Palace more than held their own for the first 45 minutes thanks to another lacklustre Chelsea performance away from home.

"We started really flat, we didn't show enough intensity. It was a really tough first 45 minutes," said Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino.

"Second half we started really well, scored the 1-1 and it allowed us to manage the game."

Pochettino had hailed his side's 3-1 FA Cup win at Aston Villa last week as his side's "best performance of the season."

However, it was back to the drawing board for the Argentine in the first half at Selhurst Park as Chelsea were pedestrian in possession and were punished.

Noni Madueke was easily bullied out of possession on the edge of his own box and the ball fell to Lerma to take aim and fire into the top corner beyond Djordje Petrovic.

<h2>Silva setback</h2>

It took until first-half stoppage time for Chelsea to even register a shot as Gallagher dragged his effort across goal.

But that was a warning Palace did not heed.

The start to the second half was delayed while referee Michael Oliver sought repairs to his communication device with his assistants and VAR.

And Palace were caught cold on the restart as Gallagher, who enjoyed a successful loan spell at Palace in the 2021/22 season, smashed home Malo Gusto's cross.

Chelsea suffered a setback when Thiago Silva was forced off with a groin injury that is likely to keep him out of the League Cup final against Liverpool later this month.

But they will at least head into a daunting trip to Manchester City on Saturday with some renewed confidence thanks to a late show that snatched all three points.

Palace kept Cole Palmer quiet for most of the night, but he still proved decisive with two assists in stoppage time.

The former City playmaker picked out Gallagher at the edge of the box to fire home his third goal in two games having not scored all season before then.

Palmer then freed Fernandez as Chelsea galloped from one end of the field to the other on the counter-attack and he sat down Daniel Munoz before stroking into the top corner.

Premier League: Chelsea late show deepens Crystal Palace crisis after second half comeback in London derby

Football could be set for a major overhaul in the coming days after the International Football Association Board (IFAB) announced the introduction of blue cards on Thursday (Feb 8). The new rule will be an upgrade in the sanction system of football which will see players face time off during the match, temporality handing the opposition team a man’s advantage in a sin-bin system already used in Rugby and Hockey. However, with football being an open passing sport, the big question is whether there will be any blue cards sanctions on goalkeepers.

<h2>Blue card sanction for goalkeepers</h2>

According to the latest report produced by The Telegraph, goalkeepers will not be exempted from the blue cards and will face time out if they receive one. This could result in the goalkeeper sitting out of the match for the described sin-bin period (likely to be 10 minutes). In this scenario, the team at a disadvantage could either play one of the outfield players as a goalkeeper or they can make a permanent substitute.

However, there is no clarity in which situations will the goalkeeper get a blue card as the IFAB is still in discussion on how the new rule will be implemented.

<h2>Effects of the blue card introduction</h2>

As things stand, red cards remain the highest order of punishment which results in a one, three or more match suspension for the player. Yellow cards remain the second-highest order of punishment and could result in a ban for the player after picking up several during the course of the season. Blue cards are likely to replace yellow cards as the second-highest order of punishment as the player is temporarily sent off rather than being on the field despite receiving a card.

Since blue cards (sin-bin) were introduced partially in 2018, the Football Association (FA) has reported a total of 38 per cent reduction in dissent cases. If this is the same, player’s discipline on the field towards officials and opposition players is expected to improve.

Football: Goalkeepers unlikely to get exemption from new blue card rule

Liverpool earned a crucial 3-1 win against relegation-threatened Burnley on Saturday to return to the Premier League summit after being briefly unseated by champions Manchester City.

The Anfield side are hunting a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in Jurgen Klopp's final season in charge but once again have relentless City for company at the top of the table.

Liverpool, beaten by title rivals Arsenal last week, were not at their fluent best but did enough to get over the line against Vincent Kompany's men, who remain seven points from safety.

City, who beat Everton 2-0 at home in the early kick-off, are two points behind Liverpool with a game in hand as they chase an unprecedented fourth consecutive English top-flight title.

The Reds were gifted the lead when Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford came for a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner but missed the ball and Diogo Jota headed into an empty net for his ninth Premier League goal of the season.

But they were pegged back minutes before half-time when Dara O'Shea's bullet header from a corner gave Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher no chance.

Liverpool were a different proposition in the second half and Luis Diaz put them back in front in the 52nd minute with a header from close range.

David Datro Fofana squandered clear chances to equalise for the visitors -- Kelleher saved well from the forward minutes before Fofana curled wide of the post.

The home fans breathed a huge side of relief when Darwin Nunez headed in Harvey Elliott's fine cross in the 79th minute to open up a two-goal lead, which ultimately proved enough to secure the three points.

Premier League: Erling Haaland’s brace sinks Everton as Manchester City returns to top

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou led a chorus of disapproval on Friday over a controversial proposal to introduce blue cards and sin bins.

It has been reported that blue cards will be shown to players, who would be sent to a 'sin-bin' for 10 minutes, as part of a new trial aimed at improving on-pitch behaviour.

At present, players shown a red card or two yellow cards are expelled for the rest of the game.

Sin bins have been used at grassroots level in England for dissent, but the trial could also include cynical fouls.

Reports say that football's lawmakers IFAB have delayed releasing information about the proposed trial following talks with world governing body FIFA.

It is understood that the trial phase will not take place in top-level football to avoid players being in competitions with different rules concurrently.

But Klopp was among several Premier League managers to express concerns about the proposal.&nbsp;

"I think everything what the actual situation shows is we should keep it as simple as somehow possible, for the referees as well," the German said Friday.

"It's a difficult job. I think the introduction of a blue card would just give more opportunities to fail as well.

"The discussion will be: 'It was a blue card, should it have been a yellow card? Now it's 10 minutes off. In the good old times it would have been a red card or only a yellow'.

"It doesn't sound like a fantastic idea in the first moment but actually I can't remember the last fantastic idea (which) came from these guys, if they ever had one. I am 56 and, pah, never."

Postecoglou said the plan could be another misstep by football's authorities after the controversial introduction of the widely criticised VAR system.

Premier League: Bosses unconvinced by 'blue card' plan after IFAB sets for trail

A Chelsea fan pleaded guilty to assaulting Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka after invading the pitch to celebrate a goal at Stamford Bridge.

Jordan Chidley was involved in the incident with Dubravka in December after Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk scored a late equaliser in the League Cup quarter-final against Newcastle.

The 25-year-old admitted assault by beating and unlawfully going onto a playing area at a football match.

District judge Neeta Minhas issued a three-year, football banning order and fined him £807 at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Prosecutor Malachy Pakenham told the court that Chidley climbed down onto the pitch after the goal and ran over to Dubravka.

"The steward tries to grab him, he then puts his arms out and grabs and touches the goalie who pulls away from him," Pakenham said.

The prosecutor told the court the contact was "quite minimal".

Mauricio Pochettino insists he won't lose his hair because of Chelsea's dismal form as the under-fire Blues boss called for perspective over their slump.

Pochettino's side head to Aston Villa for an FA Cup fourth-round replay on Wednesday reeling after successive heavy defeats.

Chelsea lost 4-1 at Liverpool, then slumped to a chastening 4-2 home defeat against Wolves on Sunday.

Pochettino was jeered by angry Chelsea fans during the Wolves capitulation, leading to fresh speculation that the Argentine could be in danger of the sack.

The former Tottenham boss has been unable to make positive impact on Chelsea despite major investment in new signings since taking charge in the close-season.

With Chelsea languishing in 11th place in the Premier League, an FA Cup exit at Villa would only add to the pressure.

But Pochettino insisted he would retain a sense of enjoyment in the job even in trying times.

"Football is my passion, not my job," he told reporters on Tuesday. "Sometimes we say 'job' but it's the wrong word. Football is entertainment.

"Being coach, I need to keep a sense of why I am here. We cannot suffer because of business and other things. We need to be focused to play football.

"To be focused in football, you need to feel free in your mind. You cannot be affected because the stock in New York or Tokyo, or the weather or because the farm doesn't grow.

"That's why I keep my hair like this, because I don't suffer from things that I am not in charge of. I only suffer for football, to try to improve the players, to provide them a good platform to win games.

"If there is no rain on my farm, you kill the business of my farm. That is a stress. You can lose your hair. But I cannot lose my hair because we're not winning because the opponent was better than us."

With 15 league games to go, Chelsea are just one place higher in the table than they finished last season.

That campaign featured the sackings of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, paving the way for Pochettino's eventual arrival at Stamford Bridge.

Pochettino claims he maintains a strong relationship with Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly, revealing he received a "good" text from the club hierarchy recently.

In a bid to turn the tide, Pochettino this week addressed his squad with a rallying cry ahead of the key run of fixtures that includes the League Cup final against Liverpool.&nbsp;

"I told the players today in a meeting that I trust you more than ever. I'm going to support you more than ever," he said.

"I'm not a normal boss. I'm the leader and I need to reflect with every single action that I really trust the players.

"If they don't perform it is my responsibility and the players' responsibility always because they are on the pitch.

But I cannot lose my hair because we're not winning because the opponent was better than us." With 15 league games to go, Chelsea are just one place higher in the table than they finished last season. In a bid to turn the tide, Pochettino this week addressed his squad with a rallying cry ahead of the key run of fixtures that includes the League Cup final against Liverpool. "I trust we can turn the situation around and change the results."

'Football is my passion,' insists Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino amid Blues' dismal run in Premier League

Pep Guardiola said Phil Foden is enjoying his best season at Manchester City after the England international's hat-trick beat Brentford 3-1 on Monday (Feb 5) to leave the Premier League's top three separated by just two points. City move alongside Arsenal on 49 points, two behind Liverpool, but Guardiola's men have a game in hand to move out in front. The defending champions became the first side in Premier League history to win four consecutive away games despite falling behind in all of them. Neal Maupay fired the Bees in front against the run of play, but there was little doubt over the outcome once Foden levelled in first-half stoppage time. Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland then teed up the England international to complete his second career hat-trick after the break. "He's a guy with a sense of goal," said Guardiola after Foden took his tally for the season to 14. "I think he is playing his best season since we are together. The incidence of goals and assists, of playing in this central position, are unbelievable." City's rivals for the title may rue not opening up an advantage while De Bruyne and Haaland were sidelined by injury in recent months as they look primed to become the first side to ever win four consecutive English top-flight titles. Flekken inspired Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken started the night as statistically the worst goalkeeper in the Premier League for the percentage of shots saved. However, the Dutchman was in inspired form to frustrate the champions in the opening 45 minutes as he made nine saves before the break. Brentford had barely posed any threat before they went in front on 21 minutes as City's run of just one Premier League clean sheet since October goes on. Flekken got the assist on top of his heroics at the back as from his goal-kick, Ivan Toney blocked off Nathan Ake, allowing Maupay to run clear and score for the fifth consecutive game. Haaland had a huge chance to mark his first start for two months with a goal moments later, but could not beat Flekken when sent clean through on goal. In total City had 17 efforts on goal with 10 on target in the first half and finally made their final one count. Ethan Pinnock headed De Bruyne's cross straight into the path of Foden, who controlled on his chest and swept the ball low into the corner. Eight minutes into the second period a De Bruyne delivery this time picked out the head of Foden directly to head past Flekken. Brentford rallied and had their chances to get back on level terms as Ruben Dias produced a vital block to turn Christian Norgaard's shot behind. "Those are the chances we need to take if we want to beat them - the best team in the world," said Brentford boss Thomas Frank. "It's difficult no matter what you do against City. We did a lot of things right and there were key moments where we didn't have the quality or they showed their quality." City made sure of an 11th victory in their last 12 games 20 minutes from time. Haaland may not have got his goal, but the Norwegian played his part with a perfectly weighted pass for Foden to bear down on goal and slot coolly past Flekken. The defeat leaves Brentford still just three points above the relegation zone. Arsenal's 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday kept the Gunners in the race for their first league title in 20 years. But that result also played into City's hands and they remain the team to beat as the business end of the season approaches.

Premier League: Manchester City blast Brentford away to move within two points of top

A hat-trick from Wolverhampton Wanderers' Matheus Cunha again exposed Chelsea's defensive frailties with the visitors coming from behind to record a 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

It was the second time in a week the big-spending London side had shipped four goals after losing 4-1 to Liverpool on Wednesday and the defeat piled pressure on coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea, who looked bright at the start, went ahead in the 20th minute through Cole Palmer, whose neatly-taken goal was his 10th for his new side in the Premier League.

But two minutes later Joao Gomes found Brazilian compatriot Cunha whose shot took a big deflection off Chelsea defender Thiago Silva.

Wolves' second just before halftime came from a shot by Rayan Ait-Nouri, which hit Axel Disasi and was given as an own-goal with Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic wrongfooted.

Chelsea pushed forward but looked disorganised at the back. At the age of 39, Silva's lack of pace is showing and his young defensive team mates looked short of experience and cohesion.

Cunha made it 3-1 midway through the second half, after Pedro Neto caught Chelsea on the break, and scored his third from the spot in the 82nd after being brought down by defender Malo Gusto.

Brazilian Silva scored a consolation header with four minutes of normal time remaining but by then many home supporters were already leaving the stadium.

The defeat piles pressure on coach Mauricio Pochettino with Chelsea dropping to 11th in the table and Wolves leap-frogging them to 10th.

He said the players were lacking in confidence and performances were not good enough.

"We feel the pressure and the stress to win, to play well to perform. We didn’t have time to feel confident," the Argentine said. "I think we are all not good enough. At the moment this is the reality. Myself, also. What we are showing today is we are not good enough. We didn't manage the situation properly."

The former Tottenham Hotspur coach added that expectations were high and the players felt those expectations.

"At the moment, we are not matching the history of the club... that is true. We need to accept and be critical. We will not give up."

Several voices in the crowd started singing the name of former coach Jose Mourinho, recently sacked by AS Roma, who led Chelsea to three Premier League titles during his tenure.

It was Wolves' first win at Stamford Bridge since 1979 and the first top-flight double over Chelsea since 1975. They beat Chelsea 2-1 at home on Dec. 24.

Premier League: Wolves punish Chelsea as Blues slump to 11th spot on points table

Twenty-year-old Conor Bradley scored his first goal for Liverpool and claimed two assists as Juergen Klopp's team moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League table with a 4-1 thrashing of Chelsea on Wednesday.

Diogo Jota, Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz were also on target for Liverpool while Darwin Nunez failed to convert a first-half spot kick in a dominant display, but the hosts were perhaps lucky not to concede a penalty themselves with Chelsea having two strong appeals waved away.

"I don't think you can have an outstanding team performance when the individuals don't work together. The start was brilliant, we were really going for them," Klopp told the BBC. "We were outstanding, it was a top game."

Liverpool, unbeaten at Anfield this season in all competitions, have 51 points after 22 games. Manchester City, who have a game in hand, are second and level on points with third-placed Arsenal on 46. Chelsea are 10th with 31.

Bradley became the youngest Liverpool player to both score and assist a goal in a Premier League match since Raheem Sterling, who was on the pitch for Chelsea on Wednesday, nearly 10 years ago.

"I just feel like I'm in a dream," Bradley told TNT Sports.

Liverpool, whose victory was their 200th under Klopp who announced last week that he will leave at the end of the season, played with great intensity from the opening whistle and Chelsea struggled to get out of their own half.

Nunez peppered Chelsea's goal with seven shots in the first half, but it was Jota who broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when he took a pass from Bradley, bundled past two Chelsea defenders to score.

Bradley, who has been exceptional since earning a starting berth following an injury to Trent Alexander-Arnold, whipped the Anfield fans into a frenzy in the 39th minute when he hammered an angled shot into the far corner after a surging run.

"What a wonderful kid he is," Klopp said. "Outstanding finish, the whole game, the contribution, the involvement. It's a job to play against Sterling, that's not easy. I'm really happy for him... that was pretty special."

The youngster from Northern Ireland left a defender in his wake in the 65th minute before launching a pinpoint cross that Szoboszlai leapt to head past Djordje Petrovic.

"We just gave everything that we had, the first 11 and the guys who came in. We showed our quality and 4-1 is a good result," Szoboszlai told the BBC. "(Bradley) just put the ball on my head so I didn't really have to do much. We are really happy to have him because he showed many times that he is ready to play."

Christopher Nkunku pulled one back in the 71st but Liverpool's Diaz replied eight minutes later.

Liverpool had 27 shots to Chelsea's four, with 12 on target, many of them by Nunez who also hit the post with a first-half penalty.

The Uruguayan became the first player since 2003-04 to hit the woodwork four times in a Premier League match.

Chelsea had two penalty appeals turned down, with both checked by VAR, the first when Virgil van Dijk brought down Conor Gallagher and the second when the Dutch defender appeared to kick Nkunku.

"It was bad luck for us," Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino said. "But that doesn't change the feeling Liverpool were better than us."

Premier League: Liverpool maintain lead at top with stunning win over depleted Chelsea

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford scored the opening goal and Kobbie Mainoo netted a superb late winner as they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-3 in a thrilling Premier League game at Molineux on Thursday.

Left out of United's 4-2 Cup win over Newport County on Sunday by manager Erik ten Hag, Rashford rattled home the opening goal after five minutes against Wolves and helped Luke Shaw tee up Rasmus Hojlund for the second in the 22nd minute.

United should have had a hatful of goals in a dominant first-half display, and Hojlund and Casmeiro had efforts ruled out for offside, but the game roared into life midway through the second half when the home side were awarded a penalty.

Video replays showed there was little contact as Pedro Neto went down under a challenge from Casemiro, who had been booked in the third minute, but after a VAR review the decision to award the spot kick was confirmed and substitute Pablo Sarabia stepped up to score in the 71st minute.

Scott McTominay struck shortly after coming off the bench to restore the visitors' two-goal cushion in the 75th minute but the home side weren't done and when Max Kilman reduced the deficit in the 85th minute, it set the scene for a thrilling climax.

Neto levelled in stoppage time with a superb effort, but Mainoo topped that by curling the ball into the net in the 97th minute to snatch a win that moved United up to seventh in the table on 35 points. Wolves are 11th on 29.

"It is a dream come true," Mainoo told broadcaster TNT after netting his first Premier League goal. "It is a tough place to come. We had to get the win. I have still not come down from it, I still feel like I'm dreaming, to be honest. To start playing in the Premier League for my boyhood club has been amazing. Now it's about trying to win more games."

United captain Bruno Fernandes praised the 18-year-old Mainoo for his cool finish in the cauldron atmosphere. "He is a big talent. I have seen him play for the Under-18s and I said a couple of years ago the name of Kobbie without knowing if he would come and play for the first team," he told TNT.

A relieved Erik ten Hag called it a "massive" win for his side. "I think we played very good and we dictated the game for an hour. We should have gone up 3-0 or 4-0. We didn't and in the end it's quite naive, the way we concede the goals," he said. "It shouldn't happen, but then we showed great resilience, especially Kobbie Mainoo, it was a great goal," the Dutchman added.

West Ham United debutant Kalvin Phillips gifted Bournemouth an early goal before the Hammers fought back to earn a 1-1 Premier League draw at the London Stadium on Thursday. England midfielder Phillips, on loan from Manchester City, underhit an attempted backpass inside three minutes to give Dominic Solanke a tap-in for his 13th goal of the campaign.

West Ham manager David Moyes said Phillips was fine after the match and attributed the error to a lack of game time. "As the game went on tonight, he was starting to get a bit better, starting to find his feet a little bit more, I thought he was just slow at the start of the game," Moyes told reporters.

West Ham could have been two down but for a strong hand by Alphonse Areola to deny Antoine Semenyo, before Tomas Soucek spurned a good chance and headed over just before the break. The hosts improved in the second half and equalised after 61 minutes through a James Ward-Prowse penalty, eventually awarded by VAR for Lloyd Kelly's foul on Mohammed Kudus.

Phillips was replaced by striker Danny Ings as West Ham pushed for a win and created half-chances, though Bournemouth constantly carried a threat on the break. The sides had to settle for a point each, however, and Bournemouth manager Adoni Iraola was happy enough. "There's a part where you have to value the point because we know it's not easy to come to this stadium and get a result, but it's true that, I think, if any of the teams deserved to win today it was Bournemouth," he said.

Moyes also declared himself content with the result. "I'm happy with a point, I'm not happy with the performance generally," he said. West Ham remained sixth in the table on 36 points and Bournemouth moved up to 12th place on 26.

PL: Kobbie Mainoo stars in dramatic Man United win at Wolves, West Ham fight back to draw with Bournemouth

Spending by English Premier League clubs fell by 715 million pounds ($912.27 million) in the January window compared with a year ago to the lowest level in three years, according to an analysis by Deloitte's Sports Business Group.

Top-flight clubs in England collectively spent about 100 million pounds this January, a drop of around 88% from the same time last year, the analysis said.

Deloitte attributed the fall to clubs taking a more prudent approach after spending heavily in the close season and to concerns over potential sanctions for failing to comply with the league's profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

PSR was introduced in 2013 to level the playing field and prevent clubs with rich ownership groups spending vast sums on players. It means clubs are permitted to lose a maximum of 105 million pounds over a three-year period.

Everton were deducted 10 points earlier this season for breaking PSR limits -- their appeal hearing began on Wednesday - and were charged last month, along with Nottingham Forest, for another breach.

Serial champions Manchester City have also been charged with numerous breaches of finance rules since being bought by the Abu Dhabi-based City Football Group in 2008. No verdict has yet been reached in that case.

The 100 million pounds spent in the January window, which closed on Thursday, is the lowest since the league spent a combined 70 million pounds on transfers in the COVID-restricted window of January 2021, the report said.

Tottenham Hotspur made the biggest signing of the window, bringing in 21-year-old Romania defender Radu Dragusin from Italian side Genoa for 25 million pounds.

Despite the sharp dip, clubs still spent 2.5 billion pounds across the two transfer windows this season, making 2023-24 the second-highest season on record after last season.

"After record breaking spending in the last three transfer windows, Premier League clubs' spending this January has been subdued," said Tim Bridge, lead partner in Deloitte's Sports Business Group.

"The more prudent approach is likely driven by the high level of spend invested during the summer window but may also have been influenced by a heightened awareness of the Premier League's financial regulations and the potential repercussions of non-compliance."

Spending in Europe's other top leagues, however, rose 80% to 455 million Euros ($495.54 million) from the 255 million euros last year, Deloitte said, with France's Ligue 1 spending the most at 190 million euros.

The Women's Super League saw transfer volumes fall 14% in January, but a busy summer window meant that transfer activity this season was still higher than in each of the three previous seasons, the report said.

"In future transfer windows, we expect to see sharper competition between top tier leagues and clubs as they seek to attract and retain top talent," said Amy Clarke, women's sport lead in Deloitte's Sports Business Group.

"It will be interesting to see whether player trading will become a more significant contributor to clubs' business models, as they look to further capitalise on the potential of the women's transfer market."

"The more prudent approach is likely driven by the high level of spend invested during the summer window but may also have been influenced by a heightened awareness of the Premier League's financial regulations and the potential repercussions of non-compliance." Spending in Europe's other top leagues, however, rose 80% to 455 million Euros ($495.54 million) from the 255 million euros last year, Deloitte said, with France's Ligue 1 spending the most at 190 million euros.

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag has confirmed that Marcus Rashford's Belfast fiasco is now a thing of the past as the forward has taken responsibility for the same. Ten Hag affirmed that Rashford's actions led to an international disciplinary matter and now wants the focus to be on the club's upcoming games. Rashford&nbsp;was not part of United's travelling squad for the FA Cup fixture versus Newport County after skipping the training session&nbsp;at Carrington, due to an illness. However, he was spotted at a Belfast nightclub earlier in the week. He was seen socialising&nbsp;on Thursday night, shortly before reporting ill, and, hence, his actions made heads turn.&nbsp;

Ten Hag said, as quoted by Sky Sports, "Marcus has taken responsibility for his actions. This has been dealt with as an internal disciplinary matter, which is now closed. He has taken responsibility and the rest is an internal matter. Case closed."

Notably, this isn't the first disciplinary issue with a Man United player in the ongoing season, with Jadon Sancho also being punished earlier. Arsenal climbed up to second in the Premier League with a 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest as Aston Villa's unbeaten home record was ended by a 3-1 defeat to Newcastle on Tuesday.

Goals from Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka maintained the Gunners' title push at the City Ground ahead of their clash at home to leaders Liverpool on Sunday.

Arsenal's first away win since early December takes Mikel Arteta's men within two points of Liverpool, who are in action on Wednesday at home to Chelsea.

The visitors struggled to make their dominance of possession count until 25 minutes from time when Jesus' effort from a narrow angle sneaked between the legs of former Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner.

Saka then fired home his 10th goal of the season from Jesus' cross.

"Against this team at home I have seen a lot of teams that have suffered," said Arteta. "I am pleased with the performance and winning the game."

Substitute Taiwo Awoniyi set up a grandstand finish when he outmuscled William Saliba to slot home on 89 minutes.

But it was too little, too late for Forest who slip to within two points of the relegation zone and with the threat of a points deduction hanging over the club for breaching the Premier League's financial rules.

<h2>Schar shines for Newcastle</h2>

Villa failed to join Arsenal on 46 points after losing at home in the league for the first time since February last year.

Unai Emery's men had won 16 of their 17 Premier League games at Villa Park since, but gave themselves a mountain to climb as Newcastle centre-back Fabian Schar scored twice from corners in the first half.

Newcastle had the second worst away record in the league before kick-off, but were cruising towards their first victory on the road since September when Alex Moreno turned into his own net under pressure from Jacob Murphy.

"It was mixed emotions for me because that team is an elite team. The mixed part is that we haven't seen that for a number of weeks," said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, whose squad has been ravaged by injuries this season.

"We looked much like ourselves and we have players coming back."

Ollie Watkins reduced the arrears with his first goal for seven games and then had a second ruled out for offside.

But Villa are now looking over their shoulders in the race for a place in next season's Champions League as Tottenham can leapfrog them into fourth with victory over Brentford on Wednesday.

Newcastle climb up to seventh and within 11 points of Villa.

<h2>Luton thrash Brighton</h2>

Luton climbed out of the bottom three thanks to a stunning 4-0 win over Brighton as Elijah Adebayo scored a hat-trick.

Adebayo nodded in the opener after just 18 seconds and the Hatters were 2-0 up inside three minutes when Chiedozie Ogbene beat Jason Steele to a long pass over the top to walk the ball into an empty net.

Adebayo calmly slotted in at Steele's near post to make it 3-0 before the break and completed his hat-trick 11 minutes into the second half.

Everton drop into the relegation zone after failing to take their chances in a 0-0 draw at Fulham.

Crystal Palace eased fears they could be dragged into a battle for survival by twice coming from behind to beat bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United 3-2.

Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise were unsurprisingly the star men as the Eagles secured just a second win in 13 games.

Twice Olise teed up Eze for stunning finishes in the first half before Olise scored the winner after the break to life Palace up to 14th.

Ben Brereton Diaz and James McAtee were on target for the Blades, but they are now nine points adrift of safety.

<h2>United’s statement on Rashford</h2>

“Marcus has taken responsibility for his actions. This has been dealt with as an internal disciplinary matter, which is now closed,” a brief statement from Manchester United read.

With United playing on Sunday, the manager Erik ten Hag had given players Thursday off as they played against Newport County, a club in the fourth division of English football. Rashford was then seen partying in Belfast on Wednesday and Thursday evening with pictures of him getting leaked. After the party night, the player did not report for training on Friday which has reportedly not gone down well with the club and the manager.

The England striker was also reportedly ready to play in Sunday’s FA Cup match but was instead dropped.

After the incident, the player has taken full responsibility for the issue and the club has also acted to take necessary action. However, the matter is no big concern like Jadon Sancho’s disciplinary situation at the club and is already closed.

This is not the first time Rashford has been dropped for disciplinary reasons from the United squad. In December 2022, he was benched in the game against Wolves and was not part of the Starting XI.&nbsp;

Rashford is now available for selection during United’s next match against Wolves at Molineux as they look to achieve a top-four finish. Premier League: Manchester United release statement on Marcus Rashford's 'nightclub' incident

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has called for calm surrounding speculation over a number of the club's star players following the news he will leave Anfield at the end of the season.

Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold have 18 months left to run on their contracts and captain Van Dijk raised alarm bells when the Dutchman said he was "curious which direction the club will go" once Klopp leaves.

"It's completely normal," said Klopp at his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday's Premier League clash against Chelsea. "A week ago no one knew about my situation. There was still 18 months on their contracts and no one asked, so give us a break. No one has to worry."

"Write what you want, the club is stable. Everything will be fine, I'm 100 per cent sure. I would recommend to stay calm. Very often the fans' concerns are not as big as you might think. You underestimate the intelligence of our supporters."

Klopp revealed on Friday that he had told the club two months ago of his plans to leave but that it would have been a show of bad faith to try and tie players down to longer deals before announcing the news publicly.

"You cannot work like that, especially not with the relationship we have. There is enough time to do everything," he added.

"These players love to be here, I know that for a fact, don't forget that. It is not that they have one foot out. They want to know a little bit of perspective but that will happen, especially behind the scenes."

Liverpool could give Klopp an unforgettable send off as they lead the Premier League by five points and are still in the running for trophies in the League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League.

But Klopp insisted there was no rush Salah back from a hamstring injury he suffered with Egpyt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

"There was no pressure on him other than wanting to get fit as quickly as possible anyway. But we don't rush," said Klopp. "You do what you can do and, whilst that happens, we have to wait. Mo’s not ready for this game or the next. He’s injured and a muscle injury takes time."

Football clubs worldwide spent a record $9.63 billion (8.88 billion Euros) on international transfers last year, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 by more than $2 billion, according to a FIFA report published Tuesday.

The latest figures represent a 48.1 per cent increase compared to 2022 when transfer spending began to climb again after two years of belt-tightening due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The top 10 player transfers in 2023 accounted for over 10% of the entire outlay. Those deals included Jude Bellingham's move to Real Madrid, Enzo Fernandez joining Chelsea and Harry Kane signing for Bayern Munich.

English clubs, led by Chelsea, again topped the list by splashing out a combined $2.96 billion -- three times as much as those in France, which placed second on the list.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema also moved to the Gulf kingdom, but on free transfers.

Chelsea were followed by Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich as the top five biggest-spending teams in 2023.

In contrast, German sides received the most in transfer fees at almost $1.21 billion -- boosted by the sales of Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund) and Randal Kolo Muani, who left Eintracht Frankfurt for PSG.

Portuguese clubs brought in the greatest numbers of players from abroad with 1,017 incoming transfers, while Brazil exported the most with a total of 1,217.

The FIFA report also highlighted the "impressive growth" of the transfer market in women's football.

In 2023, a total of 623 women's clubs were involved in international transfers, up from 507 the year prior.

Some 1,888 players moved from one country to another as well, surpassing the 1,571 in 2022, and generating record annual spending of $6.1 million -- up 84.2 per cent from 2022.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he will "sleep a bit better" after his "biggest rival" Jurgen Klopp rocked the football world with his shock decision to leave Liverpool at the end of this season.

Klopp stunned Premier League leaders Liverpool on Friday when he revealed he will step down once the current campaign is over.

The Reds boss has been Guardiola's main competitor for domestic silverware during their time in England.

While Guardiola has largely come out on top in the trophy stakes during City's dynastic era, the Spaniard is well aware of the threat posed by Klopp and his team.

Paying tribute to the German after City's 1-0 win at Tottenham in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday, Guardiola said: "He's an absolutely incredible manager, I don't know him closely but I think he's an incredible person as well.

"I have the feeling that when he leaves at the end of the season, part of us at Manchester City is leaving too. They have been our biggest rival, Liverpool in the last years."

Klopp said he was leaving Liverpool because he no longer has the energy required to manage such a high-profile club after nine years at Anfield.

Although the two have never been close friends during their spell in England, their mutual respect is clear.

Guardiola, 53, can empathise with the 56-year-old over his decision after he walked out on Barcelona for similar reasons in 2012.

"All the managers will (feel tired) when you've done many years, I feel it completely. I felt it at Barcelona so I understand it completely," he said.

Although City have won the last three Premier League titles, their reign is under threat from Klopp again this term.

Liverpool currently sit five points clear of second placed City, who have a game in hand.

The prospect of eventually playing a Liverpool team not managed by Klopp -- one of the few coaches who can match Guardiola's intense competitiveness -- is a pleasant thought for the City boss.

Their last showdown in the Premier League will come on March 9 when City visit Anfield for a crucial clash in the title race.

"He's been my biggest rival so I think he will be missed," he said.

"I am a little bit pleased because without him I will sleep a little bit better the night before we play against Liverpool but I wish him all the best. He doesn't admit but he will be back."

Brighton &amp; Hove Albion could only muster a point in a scoreless draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday but it was enough to lift them above Manchester United into seventh place in the Premier League table. Roberto De Zerbi's team, unbeaten in nine home games, are ahead of United on goal difference with both teams on 32 points after 21 games.

"Disappointed for the result, I think we deserved to win," De Zerbi told TNT Sports. "But Wolves are a very good team with good players, especially in attack, we have a big respect for them. "We have the target to be in the top 10," the Italian added. "I think we are doing very well, I think we are happy."

Gary O'Neil's Wolves, who arrived at the Amex on the heels of three successive league wins and are unbeaten in six games in all competitions, are 11th on 29 points. O'Neil said he felt more pride for his players than frustration despite the single point. "The lads gave absolutely everything ... the way the team approached it, how aggressive they were, how they stuck to the game plan, you couldn't ask any more from them really," he told TNT. "Of course I would have liked us to score, loads and loads of really good opportunities and unfortunately we couldn't take them, but a good point, a really good point."

Neither side generated great chances in a drab first half, but the game came to life after the interval when Matheus Cunha forced Brighton keeper Jason Steele to pull off a terrific save, and then Steele smacked the rebound over the bar.

It was the first of a flurry of chances for both teams. Cunha had an opportunity to break the deadlock when he beat Steele who was well out of his net, but the Brazilian could not finish off the move and the game ended scoreless despite the combined total of 19 shots on target.

Brighton midfielder James Milner, who made his Premier League debut in 2002 at age 16, passed Ryan Giggs into second in all-time league appearances on Monday with 633 matches. He needs 20 more to equal Gareth Barry's record.

"The game is the biggest thing tonight, games wise I've hopefully got a few more in me," Milner told TNT. "I've had some luck, I've worked hard and you have to enjoy it to put the work in every day. I've been fortunate to play for some great clubs."

Premier League: Scoreless draw enough for Brighton to leapfrog Man United into seventh

Liverpool&nbsp;moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 4-0 demolition of Bournemouth that extended their unbeaten league run to 14 games on Sunday. The visitors were frustrated in a cagey first half of few goal-scoring chances but found a higher gear after the break with Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota both scoring twice.

Nunez made it 1-0 in the 49th minute after a slick passing move carved up Bournemouth's defence and the influential Jota put the game out of reach of the hosts with two clinical finishes in the 70th and 79th minutes. Uruguayan Nunez put the seal on a dominant&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;display with his second goal in stoppage time.

Liverpool&nbsp;have 48 points from 21 games with champions Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa on 43 points. City do have a game in hand of Juergen Klopp's side. Bournemouth are in 12th place with 25 points. Klopp admitted he was not happy with what he witnessed in the first half but was delighted that even without absent leading scorer Mohamed Salah his side showed they have plenty of firepower.

"We were not flexible enough in the first half and it was not a good game and I told them at halftime it was not great," Klopp told Sky Sports. "In the second half we changed formation and were all of a sudden much more fluent. We scored the goal and then everything looked different. It's great for Darwin and great for Diogo."

Bournemouth's Justin Kluivert was involved in the main first-half action, getting away with a heavy tackle on Luis Diaz and then almost creating a goal for the hosts. Liverpool&nbsp;switched Nunez to a more central role after the break and it soon paid dividends. Curtis Jones laid off a long pass to Jota who then picked out Nunez with a first-time pass and the finish was never in doubt.

Jota made it 2-0 when he was picked out by Cody Gakpo and the Portuguese struck again with another cool finish after miss-kicking his initial shot after being set up by Premier League debutant Conor Bradley who got his chance in the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Joe Gomez provided the assist for Nunez's volleyed second goal in stoppage time, meaning Nunez is the first player to 10 goals and 10 assists for a Premier League club in all competitions this season.

Brentford’s Ivan Toney is all set to return to Premier League action for the first time in over nine months as he prepares for the Nottingham Forest clash on Saturday (Jan 20). Toney, banned for nine months from all on-field football-related&nbsp;activity for breach of betting rules in the country recently completed his suspension. The return will also see him come back into the squad as team captain with Christian Norgaard absent.

<h2>Brentford set for Toney boost</h2>

"He's buzzing like an Under-8," the Bees boss Thomas Frank said when questioned about Toney's prospective return.

"I'm looking into the eyes of a very committed player. He will start tomorrow [against Nottingham Forest] and will captain the side. I'm pretty sure he's ready. He's a special character, a fantastic person to be around. The energy he brings, the smile, the positivity, is a massive thing. He drags people - he wants to win. It's a massive boost. It's like a new signing. There's an argument for him being the second-best striker in the league, in my opinion,” the boss further added.

Nottingham Forest and Everton face a points deduction after the clubs have been charged by the Premier League for a breach of their profitability and sustainability rules (PSR), the league said on Monday.

Everton have already been handed a separate 10-point deduction this year over their finances in the 2020-21 season, which meant they fell into the relegation zone.

Both clubs have now been referred to the chair of the Judicial Panel, the Premier League said, who will appoint an independent commissions to determine the appropriate sanction.

According to the Premier League's Financial Fair Play regulations, clubs are permitted to lose a maximum of 105 million pounds ($133.63 million) over a three-year period.

"Everton can assure its fans that it will continue to defend its position during the ongoing appeal and, should it be required to do so, at any future commission – and that the impact on supporters will be reflected as part of that process," Everton said.

The Merseyside club have filed an appeal against their initial points deduction, which they labelled "wholly disproportionate and unjust".

Forest, who have not previously run afoul of the regulations, become the third club to have been charged by the Premier League, following Everton and champions Manchester City.

"The club intends to continue to cooperate fully with the Premier League on this matter and are confident of a speedy and fair resolution," Forest said in a statement.

The East Midlands club were in the second-tier Championship until 2022, where clubs are permitted a maximum loss of 39 million pounds across three seasons, or 13 million pounds per season, meaning their permissible losses over the last three campaigns would add up to 61 million pounds.

Upon their promotion ahead of the 2022-23 season, Forest broke the record for most transfers (21) by a Premier League club in the close-season window.

Earlier this year, Manchester City were also referred to an independent commission over more than 100 alleged breaches of finance rules since the club were acquired by the Abu Dhabi-based City Football Group in 2008. No verdict has been reached in that case.

Clubs in England's top flight have been docked points before, with Middlesbrough having three points deducted in 1997 when they failed to fulfil a fixture, while Portsmouth were given a nine-point penalty in 2010 when the financially-troubled club entered administration.

<h2>Werner joins Spurs</h2>

Since the beginning of the transfer window, Spurs have been active in the market and tracked Werner for a long time. With personal terms agreed on Saturday, the deal was officially announced on Tuesday as Werner will look to regain his form in front of the goal. During his time with Chelsea, he scored 23 goals in 89 matches and was largely given the tag of a cult hero for the amount of chances he missed.

Werner’s debut will likely come in the blockbuster fixture against Manchester United on Sunday at Old Trafford as Spurs try to league-double the Red Devils for the first time since 1989. Spurs won the reverse fixture 2-0 in August and will have to do without captain Son Heung Min who has left for the Asian Cup in Qatar and will represent South Korea.

Werner’s arrival at the club will be a major boost for the Tottenham side as they are currently fifth in the Premier League. They are firmly in the race for the top-four finish while also standing an outside chance to win the Premier League title. Currently, Spurs are six points behind league leaders Liverpool while they are one point adrift of fourth-placed Arsenal.

<h2>Who next for Spurs?</h2>

While the Werner deal is all done, Spurs will be keen to switch their attention to other signings with Genoa’s Dragusin on their shopping list. The Romanian has been linked with the club since the start of November and could be a Spurs player if there are no last-minute surprises. Bayern Munich and Juventus are also interested in the player and have made their move, but the player remains interested in a switch to North London. If the Dragusin deal does go ahead, Eric Dier could leave the camp for Bayern Munich as the German record champions remain keen to add him.

Tottenham Hotspur have officially unveiled Timo Werner as their new player after acquiring his services on loan in the January transfer window. The announcement made on Tuesday (Jan 9) evening saw the German player switch to London for the second time, having previously played for Spurs’ bitter rivals Chelsea, where he won the Champions League in 2021.

WATCH: Tottenham unveil Timo Werner as first big signing in January transfer window

Erik ten Hag has refused to rule out making loan signings to combat the injuries and illness that threaten to derail Manchester United's bid to salvage their troubled season.

Ten Hag was without at least 10 senior players for Monday's 2-0 win at third tier Wigan in the FA Cup third round.

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen missed the tie due to illness, while Brazil winger Antony was injured.

United's substitutes were entirely comprising of youngsters, with the oldest outfield player on the bench being 22-year-old Facundo Pellistri.

Although Ten Hag is optimistic a number of players could return in time for Sunday's Premier League match against Tottenham, he is well aware just how stretched his squad is at present.

With the January transfer window open, the Dutch coach was asked if United would consider temporarily deals as well as permanent signings.

"We consider everything. So what is in the best interests of the players and also the best interests for us, the team, for Manchester United. So we'll see how we progress during the window," he said.

United are out of the Champions League and League Cup and are languishing in eighth place in the Premier League, nine points adrift of the top four.

Ten Hag admitted it has been frustrating to lose so many players in recent weeks.

But he won't that to be an excuse for their woeful run, featuring five defeats from their nine games before the Wigan match.

"I don't want to be frustrated because I can do nothing for it, it will not help to support the team," Ten Hag said.&nbsp;

"So we have to get the best performance and best results with the players available and that's what we're trying to do.

"I think there will be some players that are hopeful they can be back for the weekend."

Ten Hag hopes Eriksen can return in time for the Spurs match, while Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire could also be available.

The victory at Wigan sets up an FA Cup fourth round tie at either League Two Newport or non-league Eastleigh.

The competition, which United finished as runners-up in last season, is their only realistic opportunity of silverware this term.

"I don't think (the focus on the FA Cup) would change if you are still in Europe," Ten Hag said.&nbsp;

"It is a massive competition. Everyone wants to win this competition. So every game we take seriously."

'We consider everything,' says Manchester United boss Ten Hag on loan signings amid growing injury list

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said Son Heung-min's departure for the Asian Cup is a "big loss" as he urged his side to make up for the South Korean's untimely absence.

Postecoglou's team host Burnley in the FA Cup third round on Friday in the first of up to six matches without Son.

The Tottenham skipper has scored 12 times in all competitions this season, helping his club climb to fifth place in the Premier League.

Postecoglou believes they will miss the forward's influence off the pitch as well as his goals, with vice-captains Cristian Romero and James Maddison both injured.

"Sonny, if you name a team of the year at the moment, he's in it," Postecoglou said.

"He's been a hell of a player for us. It's a big loss for us, another one, and we're going to have to really raise everyone's levels to cover the absence of another significant contributor for us this season.

"What's more important is that Sonny has been an outstanding leader in deeds, actions and words and we're going to need players to step up tomorrow irrespective of who's wearing the armband."

Tottenham also lose Senegal's Pape Matar Sarr and Mali's Yves Bissouma to international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations this month.

But it is Son's exit that poses the biggest headache for Postecoglou and he will turn to Richarlison to fill the goal void.

The Brazil forward looks revitalised after groin surgery in November, scoring five times in his past five matches.

"He's just free of injury, he feels good physically and he's just able to perform at the levels that he wants to," Postecoglou said.

"He couldn't do that at the start of the season. Even though he was playing for us, he was feeling restricted in his movements.

"His body feels good and then he's scoring goals, which makes him feel a little bit more confident in himself."

Premier League: Spurs players must step up to replace missing Son - Ange Postecoglou

West Ham missed the chance to close in on the Premier League's top four as Brighton were denied victory at the London Stadium by Alphonse Areola in a 0-0 draw on Tuesday.

Despite being ravaged by defensive absences due to injury and suspension, the Seagulls held out for their first Premier League clean sheet of the season and deserved all three points on their second-half performance.

"We played a great game," Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi told the BBC.

"We deserved to win. We played a very smart game because the best quality of West Ham is counter-attack and we played with a focus - don't concede a counter-attack.

"We created eight clear chances to score and I'm really pleased for the performance, the understanding of the play I want and demand."

Brighton enjoyed nearly 70 percent of possession but were blighted by a familiar lack of cutting edge in the final third.

Areola had to be at his best to deny Danny Welbeck, Joao Pedro, Pascal Gross and Adam Lallana and maintain the Hammers' unbeaten run.

Premier League: West Ham hold on for Brighton stalemate at London Stadium

English football’s second division side Birmingham City on Tuesday (Jan 2) parted company with Wayne Rooney&nbsp;as manager after a poor run of form in the Championship. The legendary former England striker was in charge of the club for less than three months and lost nine of the 15 matches during his brief tenure. With the club sitting 20th in the standings, the 3-0 defeat against Leeds proved to be the final straw for Rooney having come to the club with big promises.

“Despite their best efforts, results have not met the expectations that were made clear at the outset. Therefore, the Board feels that a change in management is in the best interests of the Football Club.”

“The Club’s Board and management are fully aligned and will continue to drive transformation and take bold steps to rebuild Birmingham City into the organisation its fans and community deserve,” the statement further added.

England’s&nbsp;second-highest scorer replaced John Eustace in October with the club sixth in the Championship. However, under his stewardship, there was no progress for the side, and quickly went from promotion favourites to relegation strugglers. Birmingham are currently six points clear of Sheffield Wednesday, who occupy the last relegation spot with 22 points. Despite the poor form, the Midlands side is 12 points away from sixth placed Sunderland and will be hoping for a revival to push for promotion to the Premier League.

Professional Development Coach, Steve Spooner will take charge of the first team on an interim basis. The remaining coaching staff will be required to continue with their duties to assist Spooner.

Birmingham are next in action in the third round of the FA Cup where they will take on Hull City at the KC Stadium on Saturday (Jan 6). The club’s next Championship game will be against Swansea on Saturday (Jan 13) when they will be expected to appoint a new manager.

Wayne Rooney sacked by Championship side Birmingham City after string of poor results

Arsenal's Premier League title challenge suffered another blow in a 2-1 defeat at Fulham on Sunday, as Tottenham beat Bournemouth 3-1 to close in on their north London rivals. The Gunners' high hopes of a first league title in 20 years have been rocked by two damaging defeats in four days. Mikel Arteta was looking for a response after losing 2-0 at home to West Ham on Thursday but was left angered by what he described as his side's "worst performance of the season".

Arsenal remain in fourth, two points behind leaders Liverpool and level on 40 points with Manchester City, but having played a game more than both their title rivals. "If we play like today we will be nowhere near. Today was a really difficult day to swallow," said Arteta on his side's title aspirations. "It's a really sad day today because we didn't deserve to win the game."

Arsenal had started brightly at Craven Cottage as Bukayo Saka pounced to tap home his first goal in six games after Bernd Leno parried Gabriel Martinelli's initial effort. But the visitors failed to build on their early advantage and Fulham hit back to snap a three-game losing run in the Premier League without even scoring a goal.

Raul Jimenez was badly missed during his three-game ban for a red card at Newcastle and the Mexican kickstarted the Fulham fightback with his fourth goal in as many games. Former Arsenal winger Willian sent Tom Cairney free down the left and his dangerous low cross was swept home by Jimenez at the back post.

Fulham were the better side in the second half and they got their reward just before the hour mark. Arsenal failed to clear a corner and the ball broke kindly for Bobby De Cordova-Reid to smash home from close range.

Only a fine save from David Raya to deny Cairney and the crossbar from Andreas Pereira's free-kick prevented Arsenal from suffering further punishment in the pouring rain in west London.

But enough damage may have been done to their title chances over the past week.

Arteta's men could even be outside the top four by the time they are next in league action in three weeks' time as Tottenham closed to within a point of the Champions League places. Ange Postecoglou's men shrugged off a mounting injury crisis to inflict Bournemouth's first defeat in eight games.

Fifth-placed Spurs are just three points off the top with the table tantalisingly poised heading into 2024. "We're three points off the top so if that is the difference between having a great season and where we are, I'll take it," said Postecoglou. "When you're trying to build something you will undoubtedly come up against some challenges. I am seeing progress."

Pape Sarr's precise finish into the bottom corner opened the scoring after just nine minutes. But the Senegalese midfielder left the field in tears midway through the first half with an injury that puts his participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in doubt.

Bournemouth will feel they should have been level before the break as the in-form Dominic Solanke hit the bar amid a flurry of chances. Instead, the visitors were picked off in the second half.

Son Heung-min is also set to depart for a few weeks to lead South Korea at the Asian Cup. The Spurs captain signed off in style with a thumping finish from a narrow angle before Richarlison made it 3-0. Alex Scott pulled a goal back six minutes from time, but it was too little, too late for the Cherries, who remain in 12th.

Premier League: Arsenal falter once more at Fulham, Spurs close on top four

Manchester United's miserable season hit a new low as they crashed to a dismal 2-1 defeat at Premier League strugglers Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag's side produced a wretched display that was punished by Morgan Gibbs-White's late winner at the City Ground.

Nicolas Dominguez had put Forest ahead in the second half before Marcus Rashford equalised with just his third goal of a woeful campaign.

United's fourth loss in their last six games in all competitions left them languishing in seventh place in the Premier League, nine points adrift of the top four.

United's stirring fightback from two goals down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 on Tuesday had been heralded as the start of a new era just days after Jim Ratcliffe's investment in the troubled club.

British billionaire Ratcliffe purchased a 25 percent stake in United for around £1.03 billion ($1.3 billion) on Christmas Eve.

Ratcliffe's INEOS Group will take control of United's football operations from unpopular owners the Glazer family.

But despite Ten Hag's claim on Friday that Ratcliffe wants to work with him, this was the latest evidence that the new regime might consider dismissing the beleaguered Dutchman.

INEOS's head of sport Dave Brailsford was watching alongside the club's former boss Alex Ferguson at the City Ground as United were beaten by Forest for the first time since 1994.

Ten Hag will have to oversee a significant improvement in United's results and performances to avoid the axe.

Forest moved five points clear of the relegation zone after Nuno Espirito Santo masterminded his second successive high-profile victory.

Nuno's first win as Forest boss after replacing the sacked Steve Cooper came against Newcastle, but this was an even bigger scalp.

<h2>Turgid United</h2>

After their slow start against Villa, Ten Hag's men once again laboured to find any rhythm as passes went astray with alarming regularity.

Forest had conceded more goals than any other Premier League team in 2023, but it took 32 minutes for United to muster their first shot.

Even then, Aaron Wan-Bissaka's deflected effort trickled tamely to Forest keeper Matt Turner.

Ten Hag's furrowed brow as he stood glumly on the touchline painted a vivid picture of United's struggles.

Elanga was allowed to leave United in the close-season, while the underachieving Antony, hand-picked by Ten Hag from his old club Ajax, remains in the team.

However, it was Elanga, playing with a point to prove, who looked the more dynamic force and it was no surprise when Antony was hauled off after 53 minutes, leaving the Brazilian without a goal or assist in 21 appearances.

United striker Rasmus Hojlund, who scored his first Premier League goal to seal the Villa victory, was sidelined due to illness.

Rashford, playing as United's central striker in Hojlund's absence, might have ended up on the scoresheet, but he hardly looked convincing in the role.

Diogo Dalot fired against the post from 25 yards as United finally pieced together an incisive attack.

But United's turgid display got what it deserved in the 64th minute when Gonzalo Montiel's pass picked out Dominguez and he slotted a cool finish past Andre Onana from 12 yards.

As Forest fans serenaded Ten Hag with chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning", United's Alejandro Garnacho looped a half-volley onto the roof of the net from Bruno Fernandes' corner.

Turner gifted United an equaliser with 12 minutes left when his woeful pass was intercepted by Garnacho, who teed up Rashford to fire past the red-faced keeper from 10 yards.

But even that belated Christmas present wasn't enough to save United, who combusted again in the 82nd minute.

Undone by sloppy marking as Elanga provided the assist, United stood statuesque as Gibbs-White curled a superb strike past Onana from the edge of the area.

Making amends for his earlier mistake, Turner saved from Fernandes in stoppage-time to leave United in turmoil.
