Arsenal ended their eight-year wait for a Premier League win over Manchester City as Gabriel Martinelli's late strike sealed a dramatic 1-0 victory against the champions on Sunday.

After 12 successive league defeats at the hands of Pep Guardiola's men, the Gunners enjoyed a moment of sweet redemption at the Emirates Stadium.

With just four minutes left, Martinelli's shot took a hefty deflection off City defender Nathan Ake, sparking wild celebrations as Arsenal clinched a top-flight success against the treble winners for the first time since December 2015.

Arsenal had beaten City on penalties in the Community Shield in August, but that victory in the curtain-raiser to the domestic season could not be taken as seriously as this potentially crucial result.

It lifted unbeaten Arsenal two points above third-placed City into second place, leaving them behind leaders Tottenham on goals scored.

For the first time since December 2018, City have lost successive league games following their 2-1 defeat at Wolves last weekend.

Add in a League Cup loss against Newcastle and City have been beaten in three of their last four games.

It is a rare sign of vulnerability from a team who started their bid for a fourth successive title by winning the first six games of the season.

Few will expect City to surrender without a fight, but Guardiola has issues to solve as he looks to reinvigorate a squad that may have lost a little hunger after their treble triumph.

There is no lack of appetite for silverware among Arsenal as they try to erase the bitter taste of blowing an eight-point lead late in the season to finish five points behind City in second place.

Guardiola said this week that Arsenal "are back" as long-term challengers to City's domestic supremacy thanks to the astute guidance of his former assistant Arteta.

For once, Guardiola lost the tactical duel with his protege as Arteta's substitutions proved decisive and gave the title race an early plot twist.

<h2>Arteta masterstroke</h2>

City nearly took the lead inside five minutes when Josko Gvardiol's lunging effort was headed off the line by Declan Rice after Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya misjudged a cross.

With Arsenal failing to clear the danger after that narrow escape, City's Nathan Ake should scored from close range, but the defender wastefully fired over.

For the second time in the opening 20 minutes, Raya almost gifted City a goal as he took too long to deal with Gabriel's back-pass, allowing Julian Alvarez to close the 'keeper down and deflect his panicked clearance inches wide.

Eddie Nketiah tried to ease Arsenal's stress when he cut inside the City area and curled wide of the far post.

Frantically waving his arms to the crowd, Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard raised the decibel levels before Mateo Kovacic brought the atmosphere to boiling point.

Crunching through the back of Odegaard's ankle, Kovacic earned a booking after a VAR check for a potential red card.

If Arteta felt aggrieved that Kovacic wasn't sent off for that challenge, the Gunners boss was apoplectic moments later after the Croatian avoided a second yellow card after chopping down Rice.

Following their tepid first half, Arsenal were the more forceful side after the break.

Martinelli, a half-time substitute, forced Ederson to save at his near post after sprinting onto Rice's pass.

Frustrated by City's disjointed display, Guardiola sent on John Stones, Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes, but the changes failed to produce the desired impact.

But Arteta countered by introducing Thomas Partey and Kai Havertz in a move that proved a masterstroke.

City looked content for a point as the half wore on with few chances, but Arsenal kept pressing and finally made the breakthrough in the 86th minute.

Partey's long pass reached Havertz and he laid the ball off to Martinelli on the edge of the area, where the Brazilian smashed a fierce strike that took a wicked deflection off Ake as it flashed past the wrong-footed Ederson.

Premier League: Gabriel Martinelli strikes late as Arsenal end City curse

Scott McTominay's two stoppage-time goals gave Manchester United a dramatic 2-1 win at home against Brentford, while 10-man Tottenham climbed to the top of the Premier League after a 1-0 victory at Luton on Saturday.

Troubled United were just moments away from a third defeat in the space of seven days at Old Trafford before McTominay came to the rescue.

Beaten by Crystal Palace last weekend and then Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday, Erik ten Hag's side were breached in shambolic fashion after 26 minutes.

Casemiro gave the ball away under no pressure, Victor Lindelof made a hash of his attempted clearance and Mathias Jensen's low shot beat Andre Onana's weak save.

Against a Brentford team without a win since August 19, ninth placed United were booed off at half-time and laboured for long periods before finally equalising in the 90th minute.

McTominay came off the bench to level three minutes into stoppage-time with a close-range strike.

And the Scotland midfielder won it in the 97th minute, producing a powerful header from Maguire's assist to ease the pressure on Ten Hag.

At Kenilworth Road, Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma was sent off just before half-time, earning a needless second booking for diving.

But Mickey van de Ven's first goal for the club soon after the interval clinched unbeaten Tottenham's sixth win in eight league games.

Ange Postecoglou's side sit two points clear of second placed Manchester City, who travel to title rivals Arsenal on Sunday.

"We showed a lot of character and resilience. We started really well, should have been three or four up, but then you get the red card and it is a different type of game," Postecoglou said.

"The players want to change the destiny of this football club and that is what they are trying to do on the pitch," the Australian added of the best unbeaten start any Tottenham manager has made.

<h2>Sterling shines</h2>

Raheem Sterling proved a point to England manager Gareth Southgate by inspiring Chelsea's 4-1 rout of Burnley.

Sterling has again been left out of the England squad for the forthcoming matches against Australia and Italy.

But the winger showed his class by playing a role in three Chelsea goals at Turf Moor as Mauricio Pochettino's team won for a third successive game in all competitions.

French teenager Wilson Odobert celebrated his first Premier League start by giving Burnley a shock lead after 15 minutes.

Chelsea equalised in the 42nd minute when Ameen Al-Dakhil accidently diverted Sterling's cross into the net for an own goal.

The Blues went head five minutes into the second half after Sterling was fouled by Vitinho and Cole Palmer converted the penalty for his first goal since signing from Manchester City in August.

Sterling capped his virtuoso display in the 65th minute with a clinical finish from Conor Gallagher's pass, with Nicolas Jackson netting Chelsea's fourth 10 minutes later.

Everton cruised to a 3-0 win against second bottom Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

Sean Dyche's side took an eighth minute lead when James Garner bagged his second goal in three games.

Jack Harrison scored Everton's second with a superb 30-yard lob that caught Neto off his line in the 37th minute.

Abdoulaye Doucoure's close-range finish on the hour wrapped up Everton's second league victory this season.

Fulham beat winless Sheffield United 3-1 thanks to Bobby De Cordova-Reid's opener, Wes Foderingham's own goal and Willian's late strike.

Antonee Robinson's own goal had briefly drawn bottom of the table United level at Craven Cottage before their late collapse.

Premier League: Scott McTominay's dramatic double lifts Man Utd as 10-man Spurs go top

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has come up with an amusing analogy over the ongoing controversy involving the Virtual Assistant Referee (VAR). Speaking ahead of his side's Premier League encounter against Burnley, Pochettino said he "trusts in the car but it is the driver that is the problem", referring to the VAR officials and the technology.&nbsp;

After Liverpool were wrongly denied a goal against Tottenham Hotspur (one of Pochettino's previous clubs), a discourse has started on the efficiency of VAR and whether it is spoiling the modern game.&nbsp;

"I trust in the VAR and how we manage the VAR. I trust in the car but the driver? That is the problem," said Pochettino.&nbsp;

The Italian manager suggested that the technology be simplified by returning the power to on-ground referees.&nbsp;

"For me, it is about simplifying the situation. The most important is to return to giving [more] power to the referee. I think one step back may make things easier and more clear. To accept when it’s a foul because sometimes when it’s live the perception is different and to trust in the referee's decision."

Expounding on his solution, the Chelsea boss added: "Trust in the referee because at the moment we are not happy with VAR, we are not happy with the people that manage the VAR but the worse is we are not happy with the referee and that is the problem."

<h2>Postecoglou accepts Liverpool denied a goal</h2>

Pochettino's statement came hours after Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou accepted Liverpool were denied a "legitimate goal" but said it was "clear it wasn't an integrity issue" which caused the error.

"Whatever I say is maybe going to be seen through the prism that we were the beneficiaries of the mistake. The facts are there was a legitimate goal that Liverpool scored which wasn't given," said the Aussie manager.&nbsp;

"My view is that we want a faultless system - that will just never exist unless we turn our game into an event which goes on for four hours and we explain every decision."

Notably, the VAR audio released on Tuesday (October 3) by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) revealed that VAR Darren England and his assistant Dan Cook had the opportunity to correct their mistake after the VAR replay operator reminded them they had taken the wrong call.&nbsp;

However, instead of using the rules as a framework and applying common sense, England displayed rigidity and said he could not do anything, even though the game had been in the next phase for barely 15 seconds.

'I trust the car but driver is the problem': Chelsea boss Pochettino's amusing analogy over VAR controversy

Arsenal defender William Saliba has revealed it was "really painful"&nbsp;to watch his team lose out on the Premier League title after he suffered an injury that forced him to sit out the business end of the league last season.&nbsp;

Saliba, regarded as the next big defender of his generation, often drawing comparisons to Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk for similar playing styles, was the mainstay for his side throughout the title run. However, his absence had a catastrophic effect on the team's performance as Arsenal slipped&nbsp;from the number one spot.&nbsp;

“Of course, it was really painful because I watched my team play every game, the most important of the season, and I was not able to play. Of course, it hurt me. Of course, I could have helped my team to maybe win the Premier League but we never know," said Saliba.&nbsp;

"It was a good experience because we were first for all the season and at the end we finished second. Every game is so important, we try to win every game to win the league. Injuries are part of football and hopefully I won’t be injured.”

<h2>Arsenal's defensive record without Saliba</h2>

In the 27 league games that Saliba started, he helped Arsenal keep a clean sheet in 11 of them. Post his injury the London-based team could only keep two clean sheets in nine games as Manchester City came from behind to secure a third consecutive title.&nbsp;

Saliba's statement comes days ahead of his side's all-important tie against City. The Gunners currently have the wood on City, having beaten them once already this season, winning the Community Shield via penalties, after scoring at the death to equalise the game.

The match on the weekend, scheduled to take place at the Emirates Stadium will be an opportunity for Arsenal to pip their rivals and go top of the table.

'It was really painful...': William Saliba on Arsenal slipping up in title race last season

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes the Red Devils will work their way out of an early season crisis after facing questions over whether he fears losing his job.

United have lost six of their last nine matches after they lost 3-2 at home by Galatasaray on Tuesday.

The English giants have lost their opening two games of the Champions League group stage for the first time.

Also Read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/var-audio-released-after-blunder-over-liverpool-forward-diazs-disallowed-goal-642302">VAR audio released after blunder over Liverpool forward Diaz's disallowed goal</a>

United are also off to their worst ever start to a Premier League season after losing four of their opening seven matches.

Ten Hag enjoyed a successful first season at Old Trafford, leading the club back into the Champions League by finishing third in the Premier League and ending a six-year trophy drought by lifting the League Cup.

"Last season went brilliant, terrific, more than we could expect," said the former Ajax boss.&nbsp;

"Also when we went into this project we knew there would be gaps. In this moment we are in a very difficult period as everyone can see but we (will) come out together.

"We are fighting together, we stick together, we are behind each other. Me, the directors, the team all together we will fight. This is not us. We know we have to do better and in togetherness we will come out (of this situation)."

Goalkeeper Andre Onana had another night to forget as his difficult start to life at United goes on.

He accepted responsibility for United's 4-3 defeat at Bayern Munich two weeks ago after a handling error led to the Germans' opening goal.

The Cameroonian was signed from Inter Milan for £47 million primarily for his ability to play the ball out from the back.

But Onana's slack pass straight to Dries Mertens proved the crucial point in the game as Casemiro dived in to bring the Galatasaray forward down and was shown a second yellow card on 77 minutes.

Mauro Icardi fired the resulting penalty wide, but made amends four minutes later by dinking the ball over Onana for the winner.

Onana was part of the Ajax side that reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019 and helped Inter reach the final of the competition last season.

Ten Hag defended his player when asked if Onana should be dropped.

"Andre was in one semi-final of the Champions League and last season he was in the final of the Champions League, so yes he has the capabilities to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

"He's showed that and he will do. We have already seen in games his great capabilities and personality. When he makes mistakes, he will bounce back."

Ten Hag enjoyed a successful first season at Old Trafford, leading the club back into the Champions League by finishing third in the Premier League and ending a six-year trophy drought by lifting the League Cup. "Last season went brilliant, terrific, more than we could expect," said the former Ajax boss. "Also when we went into this project we knew there would be gaps. In this moment we are in a very difficult period as everyone can see but we (will) come out together. "We are fighting together, we stick together, we are behind each other. Me, the directors, the team all together we will fight. This is not us. We know we have to do better and in togetherness we will come out (of this situation)." Goalkeeper Andre Onana had another night to forget as his difficult start to life at United goes on. When he makes mistakes, he will bounce back." Champions League: Ligue 1 brutally mocks Arsenal following defeat against Lens

Liverpool Football Club has received the 'controversial' audio recording between referee Simon Hooper and the VAR (Virtual Assistant Referee) Darren England and his assistant Dan Cook that saw the officials wrongfully chalk away a goal that would have allowed the Reds to lead Tottenham Hotspurs last weekend.&nbsp;

According to a Telegraph report, Liverpool have been granted the recording&nbsp;by&nbsp;Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and will take their time in reviewing the tapes. Howard Webb, the chief of the referee body is expected to release the recording publically in a matter of days as the&nbsp;VAR crisis reaches its pinnacle in the country.&nbsp;

Both Webb and PGMOL succumbed to Liverpool's demand for the tape, less than 24 hours after the club put out a scathing statement and vowed to achieve full transparency in the way VAR operates currently.&nbsp;

While Liverpool officials go through the recording, PGMOL has axed Darren England and Dan Cook for a successive week, following their calamitous performance. Both had missed last week's Premier League fixtures and will continue to sit on the sidelines over the weekend as well.&nbsp;

<h2>What did VAR do?</h2>

Down to 10 men, the team from Merseyside took the lead, courtesy of a fabulous finish from Colombian striker Luis Diaz at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London last week. However, the referee and VAR deemed the goal to be offside, without drawing the usual lines and going through the footage multiple times, as is the norm.&nbsp;

After the match, PGMOL released an apology statement where it recognised that VAR Darren England and his assistant Dan Cook failed to overturn the on-field decision of offside despite carrying out the required procedures.

“We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR," read the statement.&nbsp;

Liverpool receive 'controversial' VAR audio as PGMOL axes officials from Premier League duty

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe is considering changing his bid and offering to buy a minority stake in Manchester United, according to reports on Monday.

Ratcliffe, founder of chemicals giant INEOS, emerged as one of two leading candidates to purchase the 20-time English champions, along with Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani.

A lengthy takeover saga has followed, with numerous bids entered by both boyhood fan Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim, but no progress has been made over any potential change of ownership from the Glazer family, who announced in November they were open to selling the club.

United's valuation on the New York Stock Exchange plummeted last month after reports the Glazers may not sell.

It is now being reported that Ratcliffe could target a minority stake in the Premier League giants.

Sky News said Ratcliffe could seek a stake of about 25 per cent as part of a proposal to try to bring the drawn-out sale process to an end, having initially wanted to complete a majority takeover.

If the Glazers accepted this new reported offer, the American family would retain majority control of the club they bought in 2005.

The Glazers are deeply unpopular with United's supporters, who accuse the family of having saddled the club with debt and not investing enough.

Thousands of fans took part in an hour-long sit-in at Old Trafford after a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest in August.

United have started the Premier League season poorly, losing four of their opening seven games to sit 10th in the table.

Football: British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe mulls Manchester United minority stake - reports

Goal-shy Chelsea finally found their cutting edge on Monday, striking twice in 82 seconds to earn a morale-boosting 2-0 win against Fulham as Mykhailo Mudryk finally got off the mark.

Mauricio Pochettino's injury-ravaged team travelled to the home of their near-neighbours just two points above the relegation zone and with only five goals to their name.

Wasted early opportunities hinted at familiar failings but Ukrainian winger Mudryk scored his first goal in a Chelsea shirt in the 18th minute and Armando Broja doubled the lead in the blink of an eye.

The win lifts Chelsea to mid-table and eases the pressure on beleaguered new manager Pochettino, whose team had failed to score in their previous three Premier League games.

The former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss had pleaded for ruthlessness in front of goal and his nerves were settled by his team's quickfire first-half double.

"It's important for us to build our confidence and trust in ourselves," Pochettino told Sky Sports.&nbsp;

"The performance was very good, I'm so happy for the players and in the end we got what we deserved."

<h2>Bright start</h2>

Chelsea started brightly at Craven Cottage but failed to take advantage.

Albania forward Broja, making his first start since November 2022, blazed over from an offside position shortly after kick-off and the lively Mudryk also wasted a chance.

But the visitors got their reward in the 18th minute when a long ball from the back found Levi Colwill on the left.&nbsp;

Colwill passed to Mudryk, who controlled the ball on his chest before producing a composed finish for his first goal for the club since his big-money move from Shakhtar Donetsk in January.

Chelsea doubled their lead when Broja capitalised on a defensive mistake from Fulham centre-half Tim Ream, who gifted the ball to new signing Cole Palmer.

The ex-Manchester City man played the ball forward only for Ream to kick it against Broja and watch in horror as it rebounded into the net.

Chelsea, playing with zest, could have extended their lead further but Enzo Fernandez's strike flew narrowly wide.

The home side failed to muster a single shot on target in the first half, though Raul Jimenez went close with a header from Andreas Pereira's outswinging corner as half-time approached.

Mudryk did not appear for the second half, replaced by defender Ian Maatsen.

Fulham looked more threatening after the break and manager Marco Silva threw on forwards Alex Iwobi and Carlos Vinicius within the first 10 minutes.

Vinicius headed over before a heart-in-mouth moment for Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who was able to reclaim the ball after his goal kick was intercepted by Pereira.

Chelsea went agonisingly close to extending their lead when Maatsen thundered a strike against the left upright, with Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno saving smartly from Fernandez's follow-up.

Fulham had a wonderful chance to pull a goal back when Tom Cairney found fellow substitute Sasa Lukic in the six-yard box but he could only blast straight at Sanchez.

Chelsea held on relatively comfortably to climb to 11th place, above Fulham on goal difference.

Premier League: Chelsea stun Fulham with quickfire double, Mykhailo Mudryk scores first goal

Liverpool Football Club have taken a massive dig at the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after they admitted their error in their Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, September 30. Liverpool’s Luis Díaz had a goal disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the first half of their Premier League match for offside. However, replays showed that Diaz was played onside and the goal should have stood.

The PGMOL later admitted&nbsp;that VAR Darren England and his assistant Dan Cook failed to overturn the on-field decision of offside&nbsp;despite carrying out the required procedures. PGMOL released a statement, accepting the human error by the officials. However, the situation did not go well with Liverpool, who&nbsp;also released a statement to clear their stand.

“We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR.

“It is therefore unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not afforded to allow the correct decision to be made and that there was no subsequent intervention.

“That such failings have already been categorised as 'significant human error'&nbsp;is also unacceptable. Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency.

“This is vital for the reliability of future decision-making as it applies to all clubs with learnings being used to make improvements to processes in order to ensure this kind of situation cannot occur again.

“In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution,” a statement released from Liverpool read.

Diaz’s goal disallowed had a huge bearing on the outcome of the contest as Liverpool lost to Spurs in a close contest. Liverpool were down to 10-man when Diaz scored the controversial goal while Spurs would later score to make it 1-0 in their favour. Although the Reds managed to equalise in the first half stoppage time, they ultimately lost the contest when Joel Matip scored an own goal presenting Tottenham their first win in six years against Liverpool.

The stoppage time goal was the latest winning own goal in the Premier League, which brought their 19-game unbeaten run to a halt. The Reds were also reduced to nine men when Diego Jota was sent off for a second bookable offense in the second half.

However, replays showed that Diaz was played onside and the goal should have stood. Liverpool Football Club acknowledges PGMOL’s admission of their failures last night. It is clear that the correct application of the laws of the game did not occur, resulting in sporting integrity being undermined. — Liverpool FC (@LFC) October 1, 2023 × Liverpool blast PGMOL The PGMOL later admitted that VAR Darren England and his assistant Dan Cook failed to overturn the on-field decision of offside despite carrying out the required procedures. PGMOL released a statement, accepting the human error by the officials. However, the situation did not go well with Liverpool, who also released a statement to clear their stand. “That such failings have already been categorised as 'significant human error' is also unacceptable. Arsenal closed to within a point of the lead by cruising to a 4-0 win at Bournemouth, while Aston Villa thrashed Brighton 6-1 to move into the top four.

City had won the opening six games of their title defence as they aim to become the first side to ever claim four consecutive English top-flight titles.

By contrast, Wolves had taken just four points from their first six games but stunned the champions at Molineux.

Ruben Dias' own goal put the home side in front, but City responded after the break through Julian Alvarez's free-kick.

Wolves, though, were a constant threat on the counter-attack and got their reward when Hwang Hee-Chan swept home at the second attempt 25 minutes from time.

City's defeat means Liverpool can go top should they end Tottenham's unbeaten Premier League start under Ange Postecoglou in the 1615GMT kick off.

United have now lost four of their opening seven league games of the season to pile more pressure on Erik ten Hag.

Joachim&nbsp;Andersen's stunning first-half volley separated the sides at Old Trafford.

United had won a League Cup meeting between the sides 3-0 in midweek.

But with Palace restored to full strength, the Red Devils suffered from a familiar lack of cutting edge up front as they laboured to get back into the game.

Defeat sees United slip to 10th in the table.

Bukayo Saka had been an injury doubt, but headed into an empty net to open the scoring on his 87th consecutive Premier League appearance.

Saka could have had more had he not then handed over penalty duties.

Martin Odegaard has shared responsibility from the spot with Saka this season and the Norwegian slotted home Arsenal's second before the break.

Both Saka and Odegaard then stood aside to give Kai Havertz the confidence boost of his first goal for the club when the Gunners were awarded a second spot-kick on 53 minutes.

Ben White rounded off the scoring in stoppage time.

Newcastle's recovery from a slow start to the season continues as the Magpies overcame Burnley 2-0.

Miguel Almiron fired into the top corner to open the scoring and Alexander Isak's penalty secured the points 14 minutes from time.

Ollie Watkins bagged a hat-trick in Villa's stunning demolition of Brighton.

Two goals from the England striker and a Pervis Estupinan own goal put Villa 3-0 up inside 26 minutes.

Ansu Fati reduced the deficit with his first Brighton goal.

But the day belonged to Watkins and he became the first Villa player in 47 years to score two hat-tricks in one season.

Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz piled on the pain for Brighton in the closing stages and did enough to edge Villa ahead of the Seagulls on goal difference.

"We are feeling strong here with the supporters, we are connected with them," said Villa boss Unai Emery after a 10th consecutive home Premier League win.

Luton secured their first ever Premier League win with a 2-1 victory at Everton.

Tom Lockyer and Carlton Morris were on target for the Hatters, who climb out of the relegation zone.

Premier League: Manchester United winger Antony returns to training despite sexual assault allegations

Bukayo Saka has joined Arsenal's growing injury list after Mikel Arteta revealed the England forward is struggling with a foot problem.

Saka limped off in the closing stages of Sunday's 2-2 draw against north London rivals Tottenham. The 22-year-old will definitely miss Arsenal's League Cup third round tie at Brentford on Wednesday and could also be sidelined for Saturday's Premier League game against Bournemouth.

If Saka is unable to feature this weekend, it will end his club-record run of 86 consecutive Premier League appearances.

"He was limping quite badly after the match. We had to get him off the field, which is never a good sign. He hasn't been able to participate in the session," Arteta told reporters on Tuesday.

Asked if he could miss the Bournemouth game, Arteta added: "It's a possibility, yes."

Saka is the latest Arsenal star to catch the injury bug after England midfielder Declan Rice was replaced at half-time against Tottenham with a back issue.

Brazil forward Gabriel Martinelli and Belgian winger Leandro Trossard missed the derby through injury, with Jurrien Timber and Thomas Partey also sidelined by long-term fitness problems.

Losing Saka, who has four goals and four assists from the first eight games this season, for a sustained period of time would be an especially painful blow for Arteta.

Arteta once again highlighted the amount of football being played as a potential explanation for so many injuries.

"It's true that they play with the national teams and they're coming from a season where they had a World Cup and some players played 60-odd games," he said. "We've been unlucky. Jurrien, for example, was due to other reasons, while Bukayo was because someone stepped on him.

"There are some traumatic injuries, others are more muscular. We try to find the ways to avoid them but they're a part of football.

"It's true that we have a lot of internationals in the last few windows and they have quite a lot of exposure to minutes but at the moment we have a squad that is not 24 players. To change 11 or 12 players tomorrow is just not a possibility we have."

Bukayo Saka joins Arsenal's growing injury list, to miss next two fixtures: Arteta

Tottenham came from behind twice to rescue a pulsating 2-2 draw against Arsenal thanks to Son Heung-min's double in Sunday's north London derby. Ange Postecoglou's side trailed to Cristian Romero's first half own goal before South Korea forward Son hauled them level at the Emirates Stadium.

Bukayo Saka restored Arsenal's lead with a second half penalty, but Son had the last word with his second goal as these bitter rivals both extended their unbeaten starts to the Premier League season.

Tottenham sit in fourth place, above fifth placed Arsenal on goal difference, after a hard-fought clash offered more evidence that Postecoglou has revived a club in turmoil when he arrived from Celtic in the close-season.

Although Tottenham have now won just one of their last 31 league trips to Arsenal and remain without a victory on enemy territory since 2010, there was much to admire from Postecoglou's team.

Not only did they show impressive character to twice hit back from Arsenal's goals, but they did it with the kind of eye-catching play that was so rarely seen during Antonio Conte's reign.

Tottenham have scored at least twice in all six league games under Postecoglou despite the close-season departure of the club's record goal-scorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

For Arsenal, it was a frustrating afternoon as they lost ground on leaders Manchester City, who stand four points above them in the title race.

Arsenal tested Tottenham's mettle in a blistering start as Saka scooped a pin-point cross to the far post, where Gabriel Jesus' half-volley drew a fine save from Guglielmo Vicario.

If that was a well-crafted chance, Arsenal's second opportunity came gift-wrapped by Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie.

Udogie's woeful backpass was intercepted by Eddie Nketiah for a fierce strike that Vicario repelled at his near post.

<h2>- Maddison revenge -</h2>

Arsenal's pressure was mounting and they took the lead in the 26th minute, albeit in the most fortuitous fashion possible.

As Tottenham's defenders backed off too far, Saka advanced into the area and curled in a shot that took a huge deflection off Romero's out-stretched leg as it flashed past the wrong-footed Vicario.

Rubbing salt into Tottenham's wounds, Saka copied James Maddison's goal celebration as the dejected midfielder trudged back to the centre circle.

Arsenal keeper David Raya, starting his third successive match instead of Aaron Ramsdale, made an outstanding save to keep out Brennan Johnson's strike late in the first half.

But, with Tottenham gradually turning the tide, Raya was guilty of misjudging a cross in the attack that led to the visitors' 42nd minute equaliser.

After Raya weakly palmed the ball away rather than catching it, he managed to save Johnson's effort, but Tottenham still recycled possession to Maddison.

Exacting revenge on Saka for his earlier taunt, Maddison adroitly evaded the winger and cut a low cross towards Son, who deftly flicked his shot past Raya from six yards.

Arteta had to send on Jorginho for the injured Declan Rice at half-time but Arsenal quickly regained the lead in the 54th minute.

The hapless Romero blocked Ben White's close-range shot with his hand, conceding a penalty that referee Robert Jones awarded after checking the pitchside monitor.

Saka calmly stroked the spot-kick past Vicario before passing up more mockery of Maddison as he celebrated with a gleeful knee slide this time.

Remarkably, Arsenal's advantage lasted just seconds as Tottenham snatched a 55th minute leveller.

Maddison was the instigator again, dispossessing the careless Jorginho in midfield before teeing up Son for a clinical finish into the far corner.

In a dramatic finale, Son nearly won it when he fired into the side-netting before Arsenal's Gabriel Magalhaes nodded inches wide and Saka's drive forced a fine save from Vicario.

Premier League: Son hits brace as Tottenham draw 2-2 with Arsenal at Emirates

Manchester United’s star forward Marcus Rashford escaped unhurt in an unfortunate late-night car accident following the Burnley game on Saturday. The England international is said to have not sustained any injuries, while his white Rolls Royce got damaged in the crash. As per several reports emerging&nbsp;from the UK, United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, reached the scene on time and helped Rashford get out unhurt.

The incident happened when Rashford left Manchester United’s Carrington training ground for home in his car.&nbsp;

In the videos and photos surfacing online, Rashford’s car first hit the lamppost before ramming into another a few yards ahead. The police also reached the accident scene on time and did their usual investigation without making any arrests and letting go of Rashford.

Speaking to the media after the game, Ten Hag said this win will overturn United’s fortune this season.

"This is only one win, but what we have seen is that there is togetherness and fight - a real good spirit in the dressing room," said Ten Hag. "What we have seen is when you have to defend with 11 and do it together, it is very difficult to play against this Manchester United."

Meanwhile, Manchester United will host Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, September 27, and then again three days later in the Premier League.&nbsp;

The left-winger Rashford, in 245 appearances in the Premier League, has scored 77 goals, assisting 38 times.

This season, he would be United’s go-to-forward in the absence of several first-team players.&nbsp;

As per several reports emerging from the UK, United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, reached the scene on time and helped Rashford get out unhurt. The incident happened when Rashford left Manchester United’s Carrington training ground for home in his car. In the videos and photos surfacing online, Rashford’s car first hit the lamppost before ramming into another a few yards ahead. The police also reached the accident scene on time and did their usual investigation without making any arrests and letting go of Rashford. Marcus Rashford escapes unhurt in late-night car accident following Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Burnley

Manchester City moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League despite having Rodri sent-off in a fiery 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Phil Foden and Erling Haaland struck inside the first 15 minutes as City extended their perfect start in the Premier League to six games.

Pep Guardiola's men have now won 20 consecutive home matches in all competitions, but were made to work much harder by Rodri's moment of madness. The Spaniard grabbed Morgan Gibbs-White around the neck less than 60 seconds into the second-half and could face a costly suspension as a three-game ban would see him miss the Premier League visit to Arsenal next month.

"An exceptional game in the first-half. Exceptional game in the second for our resilience and our work because we played 52 minutes 10 against 11, so it was not easy but we were fantastic," said Guardiola. "Hopefully Rodri will learn. He has to control his emotions."

City were at their ruthless best early on to seemingly put the game to bed.

Foden smashed home a sweet volley from Kyle Walker's cushioned cross to open the scoring.

Guardiola said after losing Bernardo Silva to injury in a 3-1 win over Red Star Belgrade that his squad was "in trouble" due to a number of injuries.

Mateo Kovacic and John Stones remain sidelined, while Jack Grealish was only fit enough for a place on the bench. But the absences gave Matheus Nunes a chance to make his first league start since joining from Wolves and he made a positive impact by setting up the second goal.

The Portuguese played a neat one-two with Foden before chipping the ball across for Haaland to power home his ninth goal of the season.

Julian Alvarez could have added to City's lead when his effort from point-blank range was blocked behind. But the European champions did not appear in any danger until Rodri lost his cool.

Taiwo Awoniyi had Forest's best chance to get back into the game when the in-form Nigerian lifted over under pressure from Ederson. Awoniyi and the Brazilian goalkeeper were then lucky not to also see red as they went head-to-head in a fiery confrontation.

City, though, restored order as Guardiola switched to a back five to withstand an aerial bombardment from the visitors.

Haaland should have had his second when he spooned over with the goal gaping from Nathan Ake's cross late on.

Ten-man Manchester City beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 to stay on top of Premier League

Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal on Friday, September 22 as he commits his long-term future with the Gunners. Odegaard, who helped Arsenal finish runners-up in the Premier League in the 2022-23 season will stay at the club until 2028 while they bid for another title challenge. The deal comes just 48 hours before a crucial encounter with arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby on Sunday.

"I'm really excited for what’s to come here. I've found a place where I can be really settled and call my home,” Odegaard said after committing to his long-term future.

In 112 appearances for the North London side, Odegaard has scored 27 goals and assisted 15 having signed from Real Madrid in January 2021. He was an integral member of the side that finished fifth in the league in 2022 before surprising everyone with a spectacular season in 2022-23.

The Arsenal skipper was on target in the team’s return to the Champions League on Wednesday as he netted the fourth goal in the 4-0 win against PSV. He will have another important role to play on Sunday when Arsenal meet Spurs in the North London Derby.

The contest will take place at the Emirates Stadium where they have lost only once against the arch-rivals in 2010. Both teams are in top form at the start of the league season and are unbeaten in the season. Liverpool and Manchester City are other teams yet to taste defeat in the current Premier League season.

Premier League: Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard signs new contract before Sunday's North London derby

Manchester City's bid to retain their Champions League title will be less difficult than their long endeavour to win Europe's top club competition, manager Pep Guardiola said on Monday. City lifted their first Champions League crown with a 1-0 win over Inter Milan in Istanbul in June, bringing an end to years of disappointment and near misses in the competition.

Asked about City's chances of retaining the title ahead of their Group G opener at home to Red Star Belgrade, Guardiola told reporters: "It'll be easier. The most difficult to win is the first one. It is incredible for us but it is just one.

However, Guardiola said his players should not feel at ease, adding: "Tomorrow is the first step. We will try and get the first three points.

"It's important the players don't feel relaxed. For our club to win the Champions League is incredible but in perspective how many (clubs have) won one Champions League? A lot.

"We haven't done anything special with just one, but we are incredibly proud."

Guardiola said the injured trio of Jack Grealish, John Stones and Mateo Kovacic, who all missed City's 3-1 win at West Ham United on Saturday, would still not be available on Tuesday.

"I think they are getting better, they are not for tomorrow," Guardiola added. "Hopefully for Nottingham Forest (in the Premier League on Saturday) or coming games because we need it because we have not a big squad at that moment but it is what it is.

"Look how we prove (ourselves) without them in the last games. Hopefully they'll be back soon because we need the competition."

City also won the Premier League and FA Cup to seal a treble last season but despite that success England right back Kyle Walker said there was no shortage of motivation in the squad.

"It's our job (to be motivated). We're at a massive club for a reason," he told reporters. "It comes from within that you have to keep going and be motivated. The manager wants to win more, he doesn't settle for second and we need to follow in his footsteps.

"What we've done is in the past now, it's a new season. The manager drew a diagram and had us at the bottom of the mountain and we have to climb it again. Going again is what separates good teams from great teams."

Manchester City's Pep Guardiola backs Premier League giants to retain UCL title

Troubled Chelsea had to settle for a disappointing 0-0 draw against Bournemouth on Sunday as their dismal start to the Premier League season showed no signs of improving. Mauricio Pochettino's side have won just once in five league games this term and they were booed off after lacking any semblance of a cutting edge at the Vitality Stadium.

The Blues are without a goal in their last two matches and have scored only five times in the league this season. They are languishing in 14th place, closer to the relegation zone than the top four, as Pochettino comes to terms with the size of the task facing him at Stamford Bridge.

"I cannot say that I am happy but it was a very competitive game. We should win 1-0 or 2-0 easily because in the first 30 minutes we had the chances," Pochettino said. "With 12 injuries and only three players that started today who were with us for these two weeks I think I need only need to say it was a really good effort."

The former Tottenham and Paris Saint Germain boss was hired in the close-season to clean up the mess left by Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard, who all had spells in charge of Chelsea during last season's wretched campaign.

But Pochettino has so far been unable to make an impact despite Chelsea's £350 million spending spree on new signings.

A rash of untimely injuries haven't helped but Chelsea's decision to largely sign younger players has left Pochettino with an inexperienced squad that lacks the maturity to close out games.

"We need to prove our efficiency in front of goal. We need to be calm also but these circumstances are not always easy for the players. We cannot blame anyone," Pochettino said. "The fans are disappointed because of the situation but I am not worried about that because we really know what we are doing."

Challenging for a place in the Champions League was Pochettino's target this season, but that ambition already seems overly optimistic on the evidence of this drab display against winless Bournemouth. While it is too soon to say Pochettino is in danger of the sack, he will be well aware Potter lasted less than seven months before being sacked by co-owner Todd Boehly.

<h2>- Lacklustre Chelsea -</h2>

Pochettino made two changes from the side that lost to Nottingham Forest in their previous game, with big-money summer signing Moises Caicedo left out of the squad and teenager Lesley Ugochukwu given his first Premier League start.

Chelsea tried to seize the initiative in the early stages, but Enzo Fernandez fired straight at Neto from the edge of the area before Raheem Sterling dragged his shot woefully wide from a dangerous position.

Nicolas Jackson went much closer when the Senegal striker drilled his shot against the post from 20 yards.

Despite their bright start, Chelsea were nearly undone by woeful defending as the unmarked Dango Ouattara reached a cross with a close-range effort that forced a fine save from Robert Sanchez.

Gallagher should have put Chelsea ahead with a shot on the turn from 10 yards, but Neto plunged to his right to make a good save.

Chelsea thought they had finally taken the lead early in the second when Sterling's free-kick bounced off the bar to Levi Colwill, who slotted into the empty net only to see his effort disallowed for offside.

But it was Bournemouth who finished stronger and Axel Disasi narrowly avoided conceding a penalty when his despairing lunge brought down Justin Kluivert just outside the area.

Sanchez came to Chelsea's rescue in the 80th minute, saving with his legs to keep out Dominic Solanke's strike.

Sterling could have won it with a close-range header that lacked the power to beat Neto, who also made a fine instinctive save to repel Cole Palmer's close-range volley.

Premier League: Bournemouth stalemate hurt Chelsea as Blues struggle on points table

Manchester United's crisis deepened on Saturday as Brighton's Danny Welbeck scored in a 3-1 win against his old club while Manchester City beat West Ham to stay perfect in the Premier League.

Liverpool had a brief taste of life at the top, beating Wolves 3-1 in the early kick-off, while Tottenham scored two goals in stoppage time to beat Sheffield United.

The season is spiralling out of control for Erik ten Hag's United, who started the campaign in buoyant mood after ending their trophy drought and finishing third in the league last season.&nbsp;

Some fans dreamed of a long-overdue title challenge but instead they find themselves trailing leaders City by nine points after a third chastening defeat in five matches.

United started brightly at Old Trafford, desperate to put their nightmare start to the season behind them but former youth player Welbeck silenced the home fans in the 20th minute.

A 53rd-minute goal by Pascal Gross gave United a mountain to climb and substitute Joao Pedro made it 3-0 before a consolation for Hannibal Mejbri.

Brighton's fourth straight league win against United lifted them to third in the table.

Ten Hag, in his second season at Old Trafford, now has a huge job on his hands to save United's season, besieged by problems on and off the pitch.

Jadon Sancho has been exiled from first-team training after a public spat with the manager while fellow forward Antony has been given a leave of absence to address domestic abuse allegations, which he denies.

Protests continue in the stands against unpopular owners the Glazer family, who appear to have put their attempt to sell the club on hold.

<h2>City on charge</h2>

Champions Manchester City continue to churn out the wins, even though Pep Guardiola's men did not have it all their own way at the London Stadium, trailing to a James Ward-Prowse goal in the first half.

Jeremy Doku equalised early in the second period and Bernardo Silva put City 2-1 before Erling Haaland's seventh goal of the season guaranteed a fifth win in five games.

City's win lifts them to 15 points, two clear of Liverpool at the top of the table.

Earlier, Jurgen Klopp's men roused themselves after an anaemic first-half display against Wolves, recovering from a goal down following a first period that Wolves dominated.

Cody Gakpo scored 10 minutes into the second period and Andy Robertson finished neatly in the 85th minute before an own goal from Hugo Bueno added gloss to the scoreline.

It was the third time this season that Liverpool have come from behind to win.

Klopp said his team deserved to win the game after their powerful second-half performance but stressed that they could not afford to keep falling behind.

"Turning games around is helpful in a season but we cannot rely on it, we cannot," he told the BBC.

"We have to play better in the first half of games generally. We are not stable yet, that is not possible. Too many things are new."

Sheffield United looked to be on track for their first win of the season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But Spurs grabbed an equaliser in the 98th minute when Richarlison headed home Ivan Perisic's corner to set up a grandstand finish, with 12 minutes of additional time at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Dejan Kulusevski scored the winner.

Aston Villa scored three late goals to beat Crystal Palace 3-1.

The London side led 1-0 courtesy of Odsonne Edouard's first-half goal but Jhon Duran equalised in the 87th minute.

Douglas Luiz scored a penalty deep into stoppage time to put Villa in front and Leon Bailey made it 3-1.

Fulham's Carlos Vinicius condemned Premier League new boys Luton to a fourth consecutive defeat.

Struggling Newcastle host Brentford in the evening kick-off.

Manchester United's crisis deepened on Saturday as Brighton's Danny Welbeck scored in a 3-1 win against his old club while Manchester City beat West Ham to stay perfect in the Premier League.

The season is spiralling out of control for Erik ten Hag's United, who started the campaign in buoyant mood after ending their trophy drought and finishing third in the league last season. Premier League: Brighton thump Man Utd as Man City come from behind; Richarlison leads Spurs comeback

Everton have been sold to 777 Partners, the struggling Premier League club said on Friday, with the U.S. private equity firm taking over from Farhad Moshiri in a deal reports said was worth more than 550 million pounds ($685 million).

The Miami-based investment fund said it had signed an agreement with British-Iranian billionaire Moshiri to acquire his 94.1% stake in the club. The deal is expected to be closed by the end of the year, a club statement said.

"We are truly humbled by the opportunity to become part of the Everton family as custodians of the club, and consider it a privilege to be able to build on its proud heritage and values," said Josh Wander, founder and managing partner of 777 Partners.

The firm 777 Partners has a number of clubs in its portfolio, including Italian side Genoa and Belgian team Standard Liege, while they also have stakes in LaLiga club Sevilla and Australian A-League side Melbourne Victory.

Moshiri, a former Arsenal shareholder, first bought a 49.9% stake in Everton in 2016. By January 2022, he had increased his stake to 94.1% with a 100 million pounds capital injection.

But despite investing nearly 750 million euros ($799.65 million) in transfers to build the squad since Moshiri's arrival, Everton have slipped out of the top half of the table to fight relegation battles in recent seasons.

Everton's most recent figures showed a fifth straight year of losses -- 44.7 million pounds for the 2021-22 season -- with their total loss over that period amounting to over 430 million pounds.

Under Premier League rules, teams can make a maximum loss of 105 million pounds over three years, although special allowances were made for the COVID-19 pandemic.
Everton are also in the midst of an investigation into alleged breaches of Premier League financial fair play rules, but chairman Bill Kenwright said in April they were confident the Merseyside club were compliant of all financial rules.

The club is set to go before an independent commission next month over the alleged breaches.

They have also invested in building a new stadium on Bramley Moore-Dock in Liverpool's Vauxhall area, with Moshiri saying it would cost 760 million pounds.

Everton's statement said the investment from 777 Partners would strengthen the club's balance sheet and guarantee "full funding" of the stadium.

"We are committed to partnering with the local community over the long term, working on important projects such as the development of Bramley-Moore Dock as a world-class stadium venue," Wander added.

Everton narrowly avoided relegation from the top flight in each of the last two seasons and are currently 18th in the standings without a win in four games this season.

"It is through my lengthy discussions with 777 that I believe they are the best partners to take our great club forward, with all the benefits of their multi-club investment model," Moshiri said. "Today is an important next step in the successful development of Everton and I look forward to closely following as our Club goes from strength to strength."

As a consequence of the situation, Greenwood was arrested and was out of favour from the side despite being one of the best players at the club. He continues to remain a United player but was recently sent on loan to Spanish side Getafe.

As things stand, Antony looks likely to sit out of the upcoming Premier League and Champions League clashes. Premier League: Antony granted 'leave of absence' as Manchester United star fights abuse allegations in Brazil

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk will serve an extended one-match ban for his improper behaviour during the Newcastle United match in August. The Dutch defender initially suspended for one match for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity to Newcastle attacker Alexander Isak will now have to sit out of the Wolves game after the international break having admitted that he acted improperly and used abusive and insulting words towards a match official. In addition, he was also fined £100,000 ($125, 000).

<h2>Van Djik given extended ban</h2>

"Virgil van Dijk has been suspended for one match and fined £100,000 for breaching FA Rule E3.1 during Liverpool's Premier League fixture against Newcastle on Sunday, August 27,” a statement from the Football Association (FA) read.

"The defender admitted that he acted in an improper manner and used abusive and insulting words towards a match official after being sent off in the 29th minute, and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent regulatory commission."

Van Dijk was dismissed in the first half of the contest at St. James’ Park as Newcastle led 1-0 at that time. The Reds then played the rest of the match with 10 players but still ended up winning the contest. Super Sub Darwin Nunez scored in the 81st minute to equalise and then popped up with an unlikely winner in the 93rd minute to snatch all three points for Liverpool.

Van Dijk’s suspension did not have too many problems for Liverpool as they beat Aston Villa 3-0 before the international break. The Dutch veteran will now serve his second game suspension against Wolves at Molineux when Jurgen Klopp’s men pay a visit to the Midlands club after the international game.

<h2>Liverpool’s best run</h2>

Van Dijk’s first game after return could come in the Europe League against LASK on Thursday, September 21 while his first Premier League could see him feature against high-flying West Ham at the tail end of the month. Klopp’s men have made an unbeaten start to the Premier League season having scalped 10 points from four matches with their only draw coming against Chelsea in their opening match.

The Reds are currently on a run of 13 matches without a defeat in the Premier League, stretching back to last season. A win for them in the early kick-off on Saturday, September 16 will them go top of the table with both Spurs and Man City in action later in the day.

Declan Rice scored his first goal for Arsenal and Gabriel Jesus added the icing on the cake as Arsenal roared back from a goal down to beat Manchester United 3-1 at the Emirates on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford gave the visitors the lead against the run of play in the first half but Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard equalised seconds later.

The Gunners had a penalty award overturned following a VAR check and United were denied what could have been a late winner when substitute Alejandro Garnacho was ruled offside.

The home side kept up the pressure in eight minutes of added time and were rewarded when Rice controlled a corner and shot past Andre Onana with the help of a deflection off Jonny Evans.

There was still time for another goal as substitute Jesus burst forward, teasing Onana before putting the ball in the net.

The home side should have taken the lead in the 13th minute but new signing Kai Havertz miskicked horrendously from inside the area with the goal at his mercy.

Arsenal continued to dominate, pressing high and forcing United into awkward situations at the back.

The game exploded into life shortly before the half-hour mark when United took the lead against the run of play after a speedy counter-attack.

Christian Eriksen picked up a loose ball in midfield and burst forward, producing a perfectly weighted pass for Rashford, running down the left-hand channel.

The England forward, largely anonymous in the early stages, cut inside and past two defenders before unleashing a shot past the despairing dive of Aaron Ramsdale.

But the Gunners were level just a minute later when Odegaard, unmarked in the area, blasted home from just inside the box after being found by the impressive Gabriel Martinelli.

But for all the home side's enterprising play, they mustered just one shot on target in the first half.

Arsenal were the quicker to settle after the break and were awarded a penalty just before the hour mark when Havertz tumbled in the box after being sandwiched between Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Casemiro but referee Anthony Taylor overturned his decision following a VAR check.

United boss Erik ten Hag gave new signing Rasmus Hojlund his first action in a United shirt, bringing on the Denmark forward for Martial in the 67th minute, also introducing former captain Harry Maguire for Lisandro Martinez.

Martinelli curled a shot just wide as Arsenal continued to look the more likely winners, but United looked dangerous on the break.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta made three changes, including bringing on Jesus for the lively Nketiah.

Garnacho appeared to have won the game for United in the 88th minute but VAR ruled he was marginally off-side.

PL: Late drama unfolds at Emirates as Arsenal stun Manchester United 3-1 in thriller

Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick as Manchester City maintained their perfect Premier League start with a 5-1 thrashing of Fulham on Saturday, as Son Heung-min also netted three times in Tottenham's 5-2 victory at Burnley.

But Chelsea's huge investment in the transfer market is still to reap reward as the Blues lost 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest.

In keeping with the early weeks of the season, City were good enough for the three points without ever hitting top gear.

"Every year is like this at this club. We start a bit late and a bit sloppy because we play right until the last game (of the season) because we are the best club," said Haaland.

"We will only get better and better from here."

The English champions were without manager Pep Guardiola as he recovers from back surgery in his native Catalonia.

The home side had not had a shot on target until Julian Alvarez turned home Haaland's cross to open the scoring on 31 minutes.

Fulham, who were missing influential midfielder Joao Palhinha after his deadline day move to Bayern Munich collapsed on Friday, responded immediately when Tim Ream tapped in from a corner.

City needed a set-piece of their own to restore the lead in controversial circumstances.

Nathan Ake's header was allowed to stand despite Manuel Akanji, who was in an offside position, jumping over the ball.

Haaland exploded after the break. He became the fastest player to reach 40 Premier League goals, in just 39 appearances, with a cool finish from Phil Foden's through ball.

The Norwegian then put his missed penalty at Sheffield United last weekend behind him to slot home from the spot.

He made it six goals in five games this season by completing his hat-trick in stoppage time.

<h2>Son shines for Spurs</h2>

Spurs sit two points behind City after their sparkling start under Ange Postecoglou continued.

Burnley took the lead after just four minutes at Turf Moor through Lyle Foster.

Son, who was moved into a more central role by Postecoglou in place of Richarlison, soon proved his manager had pulled off another masterstroke.

The Tottenham captain's deft chip levelled before a thunderous strike from Cristian Romero put the visitors in front in first-half stoppage time.

James Maddison's curling finish from the edge of the box made it 3-1 before Son took centre stage to score twice in three minutes and complete his hat-trick.

"I'm the captain, but I have great players around me," said Son, who was handed the armband when Harry Kane departed for Bayern Munich.

"My job is really easy and I try to be an example, try to smile and try to take responsibility on and off the pitch."

<h2>Billion pound Chelsea still toothless</h2>

Chelsea's spending on deadline day took their total splashed on new players in just over a year under a consortium fronted by Todd Boehly to more than £1 billion ($1.3 billion).

Moises Caicedo's move from Brighton, that could rise to £115 million, broke the British transfer record last month.

But the Ecuador international was at fault for the only goal at Stamford Bridge to leave Mauricio Pochettino's men embarrassed.

Anthony Elanga slotted home three minutes into the second-half after Caicedo gave the ball away inside his own half.

New signing Cole Palmer was thrown on to try and turn the game around, but Chelsea's lack of a natural goalscorer, despite their huge outlay, was again exposed.

Pochettino has won just one of his first four games in charge to leave Chelsea already eight points adrift of City.

Bournemouth were denied their first win under Andoni Iraola as Bryan Mbuemo snatched a 2-2 draw for Brentford.

Sheffield United and Everton both secured their first point of the season after a pulsating 2-2 draw in the lunchtime kick-off.

Premier League: Erling Haaland hits hat-trick, puts Man City at top, Son treble inspires Spurs

Chelsea and Everton narrowly avoided humiliating League Cup exits against fourth tier opposition as they scraped into the third round on Wednesday.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea trailed against minnows AFC Wimbledon before recovering to win 2-1 thanks to Enzo Fernandez's first goal for the club.

Struggling Everton came from behind in the closing stages to beat Doncaster 2-1.

Sheffield United were not as fortunate as their Premier League counterparts, the Blades crashing out against third tier Lincoln on penalties.

Mauricio Pochettino made seven changes to the side that beat Luton 3-0 for his first win as Chelsea boss on Friday.

Ian Maatsen, Lesley Ugochukwu and Mason Burstow made their first starts, while Diego Moreira was handed his debut.

Wimbledon struck against Chelsea's youthful side in the 19th minute.

Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez collided with Harry Pell as he came off his line in a failed attempt to collect a cross, conceding a penalty that James Tilley calmly stroked home.

Chelsea equalised on the stroke of half-time when Noni Madueke netted from the spot after the winger was fouled by Alex Pearce.

Fernandez added more composure to Chelsea's midfield after coming off the bench and the Argentine World Cup winner put his side ahead in the 72nd minute.

Taking advantage of a mix-up in the Wimbledon defence, Fernandez slotted home to finally get on the scoresheet after arriving from Benfica for £106 million in January.

"It was tough but we really enjoyed it," said Pochettino, whose side will host Brighton in the third round.

"It is always difficult to play against a team like this. That is the beauty of the cups. I'm happy with the performance overall."

<h2>Beto revives Everton</h2>

After three successive defeats to start the league season, Everton were pushed to the brink of more misery by a Doncaster side sitting bottom of fourth tier League Two.

Everton boss Sean Dyche made just four changes in a bid to avoid a giant-killing at the Eco-Power Stadium.

But Everton fell behind in the 44th minute when Joe Ironside punished sloppy defending to head Tommy Rowe's cross past Jordan Pickford.

Dyche sent on Portuguese striker Beto, signed from Udinese for £30 million this week, for his debut at the start of the second half.

Beto scored 21 Serie A goals in two seasons with Udinese and the 25-year-old quickly put his predatory instincts on display in a Toffees shirt.

Sprinting onto Abdoulaye Doucoure's hopeful pass forward in the 73rd minute, Beto got behind the Doncaster defence and guided a clinical finish into the far corner for Everton's first goal this season.

Arnaut Danjuma's composed strike from the edge of the area in the 88th minute set up a third round tie at Aston Villa.&nbsp;

"Beto is raw and can be effective. We changed a few things at half-time and reminded them they are Premier League players," Dyche said.

"We have a lot of young players learning. You lot (the media) are waiting for us to lose and I reminded them of that."

Sheffield United's miserable start to the season hit a new low with a 3-2 penalty shoot-out loss to third tier Lincoln at Bramall Lane.

After a drab 90 minutes ended goalless, Lincoln goalkeeper Lukas Jensen saved spot-kicks from Louis Marsh and Benie Traore to hand the Blades a fourth successive defeat.

Burnley won 1-0 at fellow top-flight side Nottingham Forest thanks to Zeki Amdouni's close-range volley in second half stoppage-time.

Vincent Kompany's Clarets will travel to Salford in the third round after the fourth tier side shocked Leeds on Tuesday.

Championship side Blackburn thrashed fourth tier Harrogate 8-0 in the biggest away win in their 148-year history.

The pick of the third round ties sees treble winners Manchester City travel to last season's runners-up Newcastle.

Holders Manchester United host Crystal Palace, while Liverpool face Leicester at Anfield and Arsenal travel to Brentford.

EFL Cup: Chelsea, Everton survive scares; Sheffield Utd crash out in round two

The new stoppage-time rules that English soccer has enacted this season to avoid time wasting are "absurd" and will not be used in UEFA competitions, said Zvonimir Boban, the European governing body's chief of football, on Wednesday.

Following FIFA's approach at the men's and women's World Cups, England's referees body said in July officials would add on the exact time lost to goal celebrations, substitutions and injuries.

The aim is to increase the time the ball is in play, with games now routinely going beyond 100 minutes in total.

Manchester city midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester United defender Raphael Varane and global players' union FIFPRO have criticised the new approach, saying it will increase player workload in an already packed schedule.

"It's absolutely absurd," former AC Milan and Croatia midfielder Boban told reporters in Monaco. "Regarding player welfare, it's some kind of small tragedy or big tragedy because we are adding almost 12, 13, 14 minutes.

"When you play 60, 65 minutes - I can speak from my experience, especially as a midfielder - when you get tired, it's the last 30 minutes of the game. And then somebody comes and adds another 15 minutes.

"How often we have spoken critically about the calendar and too many games. We are not listening to players and coaches ... It's crazy. It's too much, so we will not do this. Our guidelines are different."

UEFA's chief refereeing officer Roberto Rosetti backed Boban and said the governing body had been working for five years to increase the time the ball was in play during its competitions.

"There is something more important than the accuracy of additional time," Rosetti said. Why do people like the Champions League so much? Because it's intensive, it's fantastic, the players never stop.

"We tell our referees to speed up the restart of play instead of focusing on stoppage time."

UEFA to snub Premier League-adopted 'absurd' new stoppage-time rules in European competitions - Officials

With less than 48 hours to go before the end of the European football transfer window, big clubs are ready to push for one final time as they try to sign their potential targets. Manchester City are in the market for a defensive midfielder as they try to get Matheus Nunes transferred over the line for the deadline. Cole Palmer is edging closer to a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea while Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg also appears to be on the selling list of the North London club.

<h2>Which deals can happen on deadline day?</h2>

The transfer window will close in the early hours of Saturday, September 2 morning (Indian Standard Time), with Pep Guardiola’s City pushing for Nunes. The Wolves midfielder has reportedly agreed to a $60 million move and has gone on a strike at his club to push through a move.&nbsp;In outgoings, Chelsea appear to have agreed to a deal for Cole Palmer after City rejected a loan move. In Chelsea's outgoing, former Brighton man Marc Cucurella could end up as a Manchester United player if a deal is reached with Chelsea.

Another player that could be on the move is Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Højbjerg as the Dane has attracted interest from Manchester United. The Danish midfielder is a key member of the Spurs squad but has dropped down the pecking order behind Pape Matar Sarr, Oliver Skipp, and Yves Bissouma. A loan move could be beneficial for the experienced player while the club looks to move on.

In a big blow for Spurs, Barcelona No.10 Ansu Fati appears closer to a move to Brighton despite strong interest from Ange Postecoglou’s men. Spurs were in the pole position until Brighton struck the loan deal that will see the player return to Barcelona in 2024.

Aston Villa on the flip side are stretching their muscle to sign former Tottenham loan player Clement Lenglet. Villa need instant replacement as Tyrone Mings suffered a long-term injury. Lenglet will link up with former Villareal star Pau Torres in the defence.

Other deals likely to go over the line before the deadline day include Niclas Fullkrug to Borussia Dortmund, Joao Palhinha to Bayern Munich, and Conor Gallagher to Spurs.

Cole Palmer is edging closer to a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea while Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg also appears to be on the selling list of the North London club. Which deals can happen on deadline day? The transfer window will close in the early hours of Saturday, September 2 morning (Indian Standard Time), with Pep Guardiola’s City pushing for Nunes. The Wolves midfielder has reportedly agreed to a $60 million move and has gone on a strike at his club to push through a move. In outgoings, Chelsea appear to have agreed to a deal for Cole Palmer after City rejected a loan move. Football Transfer: Chelsea, Man City gear up for final push before deadline

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland scooped the PFA Players' Player of the Year award on Tuesday after his stellar first season with the treble winners.

England and Aston Villa star Rachel Daly won the women's prize, voted for by fellow players.

Organised by the Professional Footballers' Association, the awards salute the best male and female players in English football in 2023.

Haaland enjoyed a stunning debut season for City, hitting 52 goals in all competitions as Pep Guardiola's men won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

The 23-year-old saw off competition from team-mates John Stones and Kevin De Bruyne, as well as from Arsenal pair Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard and former Tottenham striker Harry Kane, now at Bayern Munich.

"It's an honour to win this prestigious award. To be recognised by your competitors is a great feeling and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me," Haaland said.

"It was an unforgettable season for the team and for me personally. Winning the treble was something I never imagined, so to achieve that with such a special group of players was an amazing feeling.

Saka was voted the men's Young Player of the Year while Chelsea's Lauren James picked up the women's award.

Daly and James were key performers for England in their run to the Women's World Cup final, which ended in defeat against Spain earlier this month.

Villa's Daly scored 22 goals in the Women's Super League last season, a remarkable achievement for a player who featured at left-back in the Lionesses' successful Euros campaign in 2022.

The 31-year-old beat off competition from Sam Kerr, Frida Maanum, Guro Reiten, Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw and Ona Batlle.

The transfer window in the Saudi Pro League (SPL) will close on September 7 according to the website. The SPL has been a major recruiting market in the current transfer window that has attracted big names like Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and N’Golo Kante. The SPL will have an advantage as they can sign players from major European leagues after their deadline is crossed on September 2, leaving them with a gap to fill if a certain player leaves after the deadline.

<h2>Can clubs complete deals after transfer window is closed?</h2>

As explained clubs cannot trade players once the deadline is crossed, however, FIFA allows two hours of allowance for the clubs if a certain deal is on the table. If two clubs have agreed on a player transfer and have submitted a ‘deal sheet’ to the league authorities, then a two-hour extension is handed for the clubs to get the deal done. So a Premier League club can complete a deal by 5:30 AM on September 2 if a proper deal sheet is submitted.
