PL: Alexis Mac Allister's stoppage-time penalty hands Brighton 1-0 win over Manchester United

Manchester City's Erling Haaland scored his record-breaking 35th Premier League goal of a stupendous season to help secure a 3-0 victory against West Ham United that sent his side back to the top of the table on Wednesday. The marauding Norwegian ended some stubborn West Ham resistance when he dinked a delicate chip into the net after 70 minutes to make him the highest scorer in a single Premier League season.

PL: Erling Haaland's record-breaking 35th goal sends Manchester City on top after 3-0 win over West Ham

Italian Football has undoubtedly had its best season in over a decade, with Inter and AC Milan both in the Champions League semi-finals. Napoli are poised to become Serie A champions and have been one of the best teams in Europe this season. Can the Italian clubs sustain this success and challenge the big boys of the Premier League and Liga?

Can Inter or AC Milan win the Champions League?

Chelsea Football Club’s hunt for a new manager is all set to end as Argentine Mauricio Pochettino appears closer than ever to being appointed as the new man at the helm at Stamford Bridge. A year of managerial turmoil that has seen the West London outfit change manager on three occasions are finally ready to announce the former Tottenham man as their new gaffer. But why is he the perfect fit to be the next man in charge as Todd Boehly faces another key decision in his short tenure as the owner of the club?

<h2>Why Pochettino?</h2>

Over the 24 months, Chelsea have gone from European Champions to the middle-table Premier League strugglers, having seen a change of ownership and key players leave through the front doors. While the club has had&nbsp;four different men in charge in the last eight months, Pochettino’s arrival could stabilise the club with his philosophy on and off the field. While Graham Potter and Frank Lampard failed to get the best out of the young players, Pochettino’s arrival at the West London club could see a change of fortunes.

<h2>Premier League experience</h2>

The 51-year-old has tons of experience in the PL, having first arrived in 2013 from Espanyol as he steered Southampton to safety. Since then he has not put a foot wrong. He led the Saints to an eighth place finish in 2014, which saw him earn a big-money move to Tottenham Hotspur, where again he worked wonders.

In little over five years in charge at the North London club, the&nbsp;former Argentinian star led Spurs to a Champions League final and League Cup final while leading the club to a second place finish, their best result since 1963. He also led Spurs to two FA Cup semi finals that saw him earn a legend’s tag during his North London stay.

<h2>London connection</h2>

While things are not different in other part of London as Tottenham too are going through turmoil of managerial calamity, Pochettino will be pleased to return to London. Having spent more than five years in London, he won’t have too many adjustments to make as his family is settled in the English capital. His son also was part of the Tottenham academy, thus making it easy for Pochettino to get settled into the surroundings.

<h2>Attacking brand of football</h2>

Pochettino’s brand of football at his previous job was one of the features as he led Paris Saint-Germain to the Champions League semi finals in 2021. He had the privilege of playing Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in the same Playing XI during his second season and did the routine job of winning the French Ligue 1 in 2022, but faced the axe due to a poor 30 minutes in Madrid in Champions League.

In 2016-17, Spurs registered their best-ever finish in the PL era that saw them finish second while also registering the best attack and defence in the division. The attacking play saw Spurs score 86 goals while conceding only 26 and were better than champions Chelsea. Harry Kane flourished during his tenure at Spurs and went on to win the Premier League Golden Boot in 2016 and 2017.

<h2>Ability to work with young players</h2>

Chelsea’s appointment of Pochettino also makes sense as they have a wealth of young players among their ranks who are yet to prove themselves at the PL level. The likes of Enzo Fernández and Mykhailo Mudryk could flourish as the Argentine has the ability to work with young players.&nbsp;

At Spurs, Dele Alli was a prime example of what led him to become a star that saw him flourish at both club and international level during Pochettino's time. Eric Dier was also handed his debut by Pochettino and remains one of the best Tottenham players in recent times.

At Southampton, Pochettino holds a good track record of developing young talents like Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse who took PL by storm.

<h2>Proven track record with struggling clubs</h2>

While leading the club to glorious heights remains a long-term project for the former Tottenham man, his short-term project will be to stabilise the club. Currently, the Blues are much closer to the drop zone than the top four and will need some instant fixes to get back on track. At Espanyol in Spain, he led the club away from relegation struggles, while he did the same with the struggling Southampton side in 2013.

Notably, Pochettino will be remembered for his work at Chelsea’s London rivals Tottenham, where he took the club to new heights. Spurs struggled before Pochettino’s arrival and were unable to finish in the top four despite having a good squad. The Argentine worked wonders and took the club to four consecutive top four finishes while reaching the Champions League final in 2019. He also saw Spurs’ transition from the old stadium to the new stadium while keeping an attacking brand of football intact.

The decision now rests with the owners of the club as the announcement for Pochettino’s arrival as Chelsea could be made before the end of the season, while Frank Lampard remains far from being approached due to a disastrous final couple of months.&nbsp;

EXPLAINED | Why Mauricio Pochettino is the perfect fit to become next Chelsea manager

Leeds United have officially parted ways with Javi Gracia after just 12 games in charge with relegation on the cards. The announcement comes after a poor run of form for the Yorkshire club which returned to the top flight in 2021 and achieved survival under Jesse Marsch. Former West Ham and Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce will now take charge for the rest of the season with Leeds sitting out of the bottom three on goal difference.

Leeds were winless in their last five Premier League matches, having initially started well under the management of Gracia. However, heavy losses in the recent week proved to be the final straw for Gracia and faced the axe with just four matches to go.

Leeds will have stern competition from fellow strugglers Nottingham Forrest while Everton and Leicester also are on a mission to avoid the drop. With Southampton running out of games, two of the bottom five teams are destined for relegation.

As things stand, PL ever-presents Everton are 19th with 29 points while Leicester, Nottingham Forrest and Leeds have 30 points each.

Allardyce suffered his first Premier League relegation when West Brom went down in 2021, leaving the club six months into an 18-month contract.

The 68-year-old former Bolton, Newcastle, West Ham and England boss becomes Leeds' third permanent manager of the season after Jesse Marsch and Gracia.

Leeds will next take on champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, May 6 before they host Allardyce’s former side Newcastle United. The penultimate game of the season will come against West Ham United, who should be safe by that time, while Spurs will visit Eland Road on the final day of the season.

Premier League: Relegation-threatened Leeds part ways with Javi Gracia; Sam Allardyce takes charge

Everton's Alex Iwobi rescued a 2-2 draw against relegation rivals Leicester, but it was the Foxes who climbed out of the Premier League's bottom three after Monday's pivotal showdown.

Iwobi scored a second-half equaliser at the King Power Stadium after James Maddison wasted a chance to put Leicester 3-1 up when his penalty was saved by Jordan Pickford.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin put Everton in front with an early penalty, before Leicester hit back with goals from Caglar Soyuncu and Jamie Vardy.

Leicester, who have won one of their last 12 league games, moved out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

The Foxes, Premier League champions in 2016, are fighting to avoid playing in the Championship for the first time in nine years.

"We missed a penalty for 3-1, but also in the first half we were second best for long periods," Leicester boss Dean Smith said.

The Toffees beat Arsenal and Leeds in two of Dyche's first three games, but have won just one of the 11 games since then, sparking furious fan protests against the club hierarchy.

"We held our nerve, kept trying to create things and overall it's a good performance, although we didn't get the three points," Dyche said.

Timothy Castagne needlessly conceded a penalty with a rash shove on Calvert-Lewin as the striker tried to control Seamus Coleman's lofted pass.

Calvert-Lewin smashed the spot-kick into the roof of the net for his first goal since October and only his second of an injury-plagued campaign.

Leicester needed a response and they delivered emphatically with two goals in the space of 11 minutes.

Everton's creaky defence was exposed again after 33 minutes.

Iwobi lost possession too easily and Vardy rolled back the years with a blistering run to reach Maddison's pass and round Pickford for a cool finish.

Everton were in disarray at the back and Michael Keane conceded a penalty in first-half stoppage time when he blocked Barnes' cross with his out-stretched arm.

But Maddison blasted his penalty straight at Pickford to give Everton renewed hope.

The save was also a tribute to England keeper Pickford's preparation.&nbsp;

Television cameras showed an image of his water bottle in the back of the net covered in details about potential Leicester penalty takers, including the note: "James Maddison - Stay - 60 percent centre".

"I did my homework. I called it this morning where I would go. He is a good player and he would've expected me to move but I double-bluffed him," Pickford said.

Iwobi made Maddison pay for his miss as the Everton midfielder equalised in the 54th minute, drilling a fine finish past Iversen from 10 yards after Calvert-Lewin flicked on McNeil's cross.

In a tense finale, Vardy's header was nodded off the line by James Tarkowski, while Iversen saved at Calvert-Lewin's feet, then repelled Abdoulaye Doucoure's rocket.

Premier League: Everton score draw against relegation rivals Leicester

Tottenham Hotspur have frequently spoken about the need to tighten up their leaky defence over the last few weeks but striker Harry Kane said it is time to put words into action after they coughed up early goals again on Sunday.

Liverpool were 3-0 up inside 15 minutes at Anfield and while Tottenham pegged the hosts back to 3-3, Diogo Jota's stoppage-time goal earned the Merseyside club a 4-3 victory. Spurs&nbsp;conceded five in the opening 21 minutes of a 6-1 rout at Newcastle United and fell behind after only seven minutes in Thursday's 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

Kane said their performance in the early stages of Sunday's game showed they had not learned their lesson. "It's not the first time it's happened this season. We need to start understanding big games better," he told Sky Sports. "We've shown we can come back into games and to do it here away at Anfield shows what we're capable of but to have the starts we have had are hard to put into words and are unacceptable.

"There's only so many words you can use, the bottom line is you need to go out there and show it isn't that case."

Interim coach Ryan Mason said the players had to be ready from the first whistle. "If you're not ready to start games with full intensity you're going to concede goals and to be 3-0 down after that time is hard," Mason told the BBC.

"The manner in which we concede the last goal makes it impossible to take. I need to speak to the players on that, we need to address it and do it quickly."

PL: Harry Kane says Spurs' slow starts 'unacceptable' after Tottenham's defeat vs Liverpool

Diogo Jota scored a stoppage-time winner as Liverpool clinched a barely-believable 4-3 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur to bolster their hopes of qualifying for Europe on Sunday.

Liverpool had led 3-0 inside the opening 15 minutes as for the second successive Sunday Tottenham's defence crumbled, but the visitors stormed back and substitute Richarlison's stoppage-time header appeared to have earned his side an unlikely point.

But Jota, also on as a substitute, punished a mistake by Lucas Moura to break Tottenham's hearts and fire Liverpool over the Londoners into fifth place in the table.

A chaotic first half was only three minutes old when Curtis Jones put the hosts in front and two minutes later Tottenham's defence crumbled again as Luis Diaz volleyed home.

When Mohamed Salah blasted a penalty high into the net in the 15th minute Tottenham seemed on course for a repeat of the horror show at Newcastle United last Sunday when they conceded five times in the opening 21 minutes in a 6-1 hammering.

With some Spurs supporters leaving early and fans chanting "we want our money back" the visitors suddenly came alive though and Harry Kane volleyed past Alisson in the 39th minute and shortly afterwards Son Heung-min was denied by the upright.

Tottenham could not believe their bad luck after the break when Son and Cristian Romero saw efforts rebound off the post within the space of a couple of minutes.

Liverpool finally appeared to have restored order but Son raced clear to make it 3-2 in the 77th minute and set up a nerve-jangling finale that had earlier looked improbable.

Former Everton forward Richarlison sent the Tottenham fans delirious when his glancing header bounced into the net but within a minute their joy turned to dismay as Jota beat Fraser Forster with a clinical slow shot.

Liverpool have 56 points from 33 games with Tottenham on 54 from 34 games. Liverpool remain seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester United who have played one game less.

The teams that finish fifth and sixth will likely qualify for the Europa League next season.

Manchester City moved to the top of the Premier League on Sunday as Erling Haaland shattered a 92-year goal landmark while Julian Alvarez scored a stunner to clinch a 2-1 win at Fulham. Norway striker Haaland converted a third-minute penalty at Craven Cottage to become the first top-flight player to score 50 goals in all competitions since 1931.

"Before Winston Churchill was Prime Minister? Wow. Sounds a long time ago. Congratulations to Erling. The best goal to help us achieve what we want is still there," City boss Pep Guardiola said.

Haaland also moved level with Alan Shearer and Andy Cole's single-season Premier League record total. Shearer scored 34 for Blackburn in 1995 and Cole hit the same tally for Newcastle in 1994.

Carlos Vinicius equalised for Fulham but Alvarez's first goal in six games, a brilliant long-range effort, lifted City one point clear of second-placed Arsenal.

"The game was so tight until the end. We knew after we beat Arsenal that winning these types of games is really important. The players behaved amazingly," added Guardiola. "The Alvarez goal was extraordinary. We have incredible strikers."

Treble-chasing City, on top for the first time in 10 weeks, have won their last eight league games and are unbeaten in their last 18 matches in all competitions.

Guardiola's red-hot team, who have a game in hand on Arsenal, need to win five of their last six games to be certain of a fifth title in six seasons.

With Haaland's goal spree showing no signs of slowing, few would bet against them taking advantage of Arsenal's collapse.

"It's important but on Tuesday Arsenal will play. Important is the West Ham game, it's a game in hand. After that we'll be top of the table and it will be more real," Guardiola said.

Arsenal, winless in their last four games, host Chelsea on Tuesday, with City at home to West Ham on Wednesday.

In the immediate aftermath of Wednesday's crucial 4-1 demolition of Arsenal, Guardiola had dismissed suggestions the title race was over.

- History-making Haaland -

Guardiola reminded his players they were held to a surprise draw at Nottingham Forest in their next match after beating Arsenal in February. It was a warning that had the desired affect, even without Kevin De Bruyne, who was missing due to an injury.

City took just three minutes to move ahead in west London as Riyad Mahrez found Alvarez in the Fulham area and the Argentine forward was flattened by Tim Ream's clumsy challenge.

History in his sights, Haaland took the ball with a determined look and confidently drove his penalty low past Bernd Leno.

Fulham broke out to snatch an equaliser against the run of play in the 15th minute.

Harry Wilson's pass found Vinicius and the Brazilian took advantage of City's sloppy marking to drill a powerful finish past Ederson from 10 yards.

Alvarez has found consistent game-time hard to come by in his first season at City due to Haaland's excellence.

But Guardiola is a big fan of the diminutive World Cup winner and he showed exactly why he has the Spaniard's faith in the 36th minute.

Taking possession 25 yards from goal, Alvarez held off a Fulham challenge before shifting into position to unleash a sublime strike that gave Leno no chance as it whipped into the top corner.

Ilkay Gundogan's close-range effort was repelled moments later by Leno, who made another smart save to deny Haaland's drive early in the second half.

A long delay following a serious injury to Fulham's Andreas Pereira lost City some of their grip on the game.

They had a lucky escape when Ederson almost lost possession inside his area, sparking a scramble that ended with the keeper poking the ball to safety.

Fulham appealed in vain for a penalty when Kyle Walker tangled with Bobby Decordova-Reid, who fired narrowly wide soon after as City held on.

PL: Erling Haaland's record-breaking goal helps Manchester City beat Fulham 2-1, climb to number 1 spot

Brighton crushed Wolves 6-0 to improve their prospects of qualifying for Europe, while Crystal Palace effectively sealed their Premier League survival with a 4-3 win against struggling West Ham on Saturday.

Beaten on penalties by Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-finals last weekend, Brighton can erase that painful loss if they make it into the Europa League or Europa Conference League.

The eighth placed Seagulls remain in contention to do just that after recording their biggest win of an impressive season that already includes victories over Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Roberto De Zerbi's side went ahead in the sixth minute at the Amex Stadium through Deniz Undav's close-range effort for his first Premier League goal.

Pascal Gross struck in the 13th and 26th minutes, the second of his goals a spectacular volley that arrowed into the top corner.

Danny Welbeck's header gave Brighton four first half goals for the first time since 2016.

The former Manchester United forced scored again shortly after the restart and Undav's second was dinked finish in the 66th minute.

At Selhurst Park, Palace moved 11 points clear of the bottom three thanks to goals from Jordan Ayew, Wilfried Zaha, Jeff Schlupp and Eberechi Eze.

Roy Hodgson's team have won four of their six matches since Hodgson returned for a second spell at the club in place of the sacked Patrick Vieira.

Tomas Soucek, Michail Antonio and Nayef Aguerd were on the scoresheet for West Ham.

But a second successive defeat leaves David Moyes' men five points above the relegation zone with daunting fixtures against Manchester City and Manchester United looming next week.

<h2>Palace beat West Ham</h2>

West Ham were in front after just nine minutes when Michael Olise headed his attempted clearance of Jarrod Bowen's corner straight to Soucek and the midfielder fired home from close-range.

Olise made amends for his blunder as Palace equalised six minutes later.

Cheick Doucoure found Olise and the forward's superb pass picked out Ghana forward Ayew, whose first-time finish beat Lukasz Fabianski at the near post.

Zaha was back in the Palace starting line-up for the first time in four games since Hodgson's return as manager at the start of April.

The Ivory Coast forward rewarded Hodgson's decision as he netted Palace's second goal in the 20th minute with a composed strike from another dangerous Olise cross.

West Ham's porous defence was breached again after half an hour, with Soucek carelessly losing possession on the edge of the area to Schlupp, who accepted the gift with a simple finish under the exposed Fabianski.

There was no end to the first half goal spree as Antonio reduced the deficit with a close-range header after Soucek flicked on a corner in the 36th minute.

Eze restored Palace's two-goal advantage in the 66th minute, converting a controversial penalty awarded for Aguerd's tug on his arm.

Aguerd got one back for the Hammers in the 73rd minute, helping Soucek's header into the net from virtually on the line, but it was too late to rescue a point.

Fourth bottom Nottingham Forest suffered a late collapse in a 2-1 defeat at Brentford.

Danilo marked his 22nd birthday by lashing Forest ahead from close-range in first half stoppage-time.

But Brentford equalised in the 82nd minute when Ivan Toney's free-kick bounced past a weak attempted save from Keylor Navas.

Toney's 20th top-flight goal this season was followed by Josh Dasilva's lethal finish four minutes into stoppage-time, leaving Forest just one point above the relegation zone.

Premier League: Brighton hit Wolves for six, Palace beat West Ham in thriller; Brentford break Forrest hearts

Tottenham fought back from two goals down to hold Manchester United to a 2-2 draw on Thursday as Newcastle closed in on Champions League football with a 4-1 thrashing of Everton. Spurs were smashed 6-1 by Newcastle on Sunday to bring Cristian Stellini's four-game reign as interim manager to an end.

Things threatened to go from bad to worse in caretaker Ryan Mason's first match in charge as United stormed into a 2-0 lead by half-time. Jadon Sancho smashed home the opener after just seven minutes before Marcus Rashford turned on the afterburners to race past Eric Dier and fire in his 29th goal of the season.

"I don't think we were that good across the 90 minutes," admitted United boss Erik ten Hag. "After half-time we had to score another goal."

United fans taunted the home support with chants of "Harry Kane, we'll see you in June" amid interest from the Red Devils in Spurs' all-time top goal scorer.

But Tottenham finally showed some fight to boost their chances of qualifying for Europe next season. Pedro Porro reduced the arrears with a thumping strike before Kane crossed for Son Heung-min to level 11 minutes from time.

"I thought in the second half we were outstanding and the character we showed after last Sunday and going two goals down," said Mason. "I hope the fans can see that we were a team today and we ran for each other. In the second half we could have scored a lot more."

A point edges Spurs back up to fifth, but they remain six points adrift of fourth-placed United, who have two games in hand.

Newcastle opened up an eight-point cushion on the chasing pack for a top-four finish and a place in the Champions League next season as Callum Wilson scored twice at Goodison Park.

Eddie Howe's men struggled to find their rhythm before the break, but led thanks to Wilson's predatory finish after Jordan Pickford parried Joelinton's drive.

- 'Earn the right' -

Newcastle then cut loose in the final 20 minutes as Joelinton headed in, Wilson found the top corner and then a sensational run from Alexander Isak teed up Jacob Murphy.

"Second half you saw us at our very best and we were very clinical in front of goal," said Howe. "Confidence was there and that was evident in the second half. We had to earn the right to get to that point."

Dwight McNeil's corner that crept in was scant consolation for Everton, who remain rooted in the relegation zone.

Only Southampton are keeping the Toffees off the foot of the table and they are now six points adrift of safety after a 1-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.

Marcus Tavernier scored the only goal at St Mary's to take the Cherries up to 14th and seven points clear of the drop zone.

Southampton thought they had snatched a dramatic 89th-minute equaliser but Che Adams' effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review, pushing the Saints closer to the Championship next season.

"I don't think we were good enough," said Southampton boss Ruben Selles. "Until we conceded the goal we weren't in the game."

PL Round-Up: Spurs hold Manchester United to a 2-2 draw, Newcastle close in on UCL qualification

Frank Lampard admitted angry Chelsea fans had every right to boo his team after they suffered a fifth successive defeat in a dismal 2-0 setback against Brentford on Wednesday. Cesar Azpilicueta's own-goal and Bryan Mbeumo's late strike condemned Lampard to his latest demoralising loss since replacing the sacked Graham Potter.

Tottenham Hotspur’s top four hopes could come to an end on Thursday, April 17 evening as they take on Manchester United in the Premier League. Spurs saw a recent turmoil of results, making them stay behind in the race for the Champions League football, while United could land a major blow to their credentials and end their pursuit with a win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The match will also mark the start of Ryan Mason’s second tenure as caretaker manager and will look to start on a high.

<h2>United ready for the big one</h2>

Having secured their place in the FA Cup final on Sunday after beating Brighton on penalties, confidence will be high in the team ranks. The Red Devils can land a final knockout blow to the Spurs as a defeat will all but end their hopes of finishing in the top four. Spurs started the season positively, but a change in manager and injuries to key players have seen them drop important points.

On the horizon, if Spurs win the contest, they can narrow down the gap between them and United to within three points. Spurs will bank on the services of key man Harry Kane who has notched 24 goals while the disappointing defeat against Newcastle on Sunday came as a hard pill to swallow. Spurs were 0-5 down after just 20 minutes and were left to rue the bad start that saw them pick up their worst defeat of the season.

Bruno Fernandes is doubtful, but the images do not look good for the Portuguese, who could join Donny van de Beek (knee), Alejandro Garnacho (ankle), Tom Heaton (ankle), Phil Jones (knee), Lisandro Martinez (foot) and Raphael Varane (ankle) on the injury list.

On the flip side, Hugo Lloris is yet again set to start on the bench while Rodrigo Bentancur (knee), Emerson Royal (knee), Ryan Sessegnon (hamstring) and Yves Bissouma remain long-term absentees.

The evening will also see the basement boys Southampton take on Bournemouth while Everton host Newcastle United in another big contest of the evening. The fixtures on Thursday evening are set to have a bearing on both the Champions League and relegation places in the league.

Premier League: Manchester United ready for KO punch as Spurs' Champions League hopes hang in balance

Manchester City took control of the Premier League title race as Kevin De Bruyne scored twice in a dominant 4-1 win over leaders Arsenal to close in on retaining their crown as English champions on Wednesday. Arsenal hold a two-point lead at the top of the table but City have two games in hand, meaning Pep Guardiola's men can afford to lose one of their remaining seven matches and still claim a fifth title in six seasons.

"It's not decisive but it's really important to beat our rival," said Guardiola. "The most important thing is the destiny is in our hands."

The Gunners' challenge to win the league for the first time in 19 years had already come off the rails prior to their trip to the Etihad as Mikel Arteta's men have now failed to win in their last four games. But for the first time this season they were truly outclassed as City flexed their muscles.

"The analysis is clear, the better team won the game," said Arteta. "They were at their best, especially in the first half, and we were nowhere near our level.

"When that happens the gap becomes too big. We got punished and we could've been punished even more."

The arrival of Erling Haaland has brought a new dimension to a City side that was already the dominant force of the English game. Haaland set a new record of 33 Premier League goals in a 38-game season deep into stoppage time to take his tally in all competitions for the campaign to 49. But the Norwegian showed there is more to his game than goals with a sublime touch that set De Bruyne away to curl the opening goal beyond Aaron Ramsdale after just seven minutes.

Arsenal never recovered from that nightmare start and were fortunate not to be blown away before half-time. Ben White's last-ditch block denied De Bruyne an almost carbon copy of his first goal after being set free in behind by Haaland.

Ramsdale then single-handedly kept Arsenal in the game and Haaland at bay with a hat-trick of saves from the towering 22-year-old.

But there was no reprieve when John Stones headed in De Bruyne's free-kick in first-half stoppage time and a VAR review adjudged the England defender was onside.

Ramsdale continued to win his battle with Haaland after the break when the City striker galloped clean through from Ederson's long ball.

But Arsenal lost the war as Haaland teed up De Bruyne once more to find the bottom corner via a nutmeg on Rob Holding on 54 minutes.

Holding has been the scapegoat for Arsenal's defensive woes in recent weeks as he has struggled to replace the injured William Saliba. Arteta's men have now conceded 11 times in their last four games and face a huge challenge to raise themselves in the final weeks of the campaign to keep any sort of pressure on City.

"We have to lift our players because they are suffering tonight and we played against an exceptional team," added Arteta. "We are where we are with five games to go. Those players deserve a lot of credit to be nine-and-a-half months against this team being where we are and there are still five games to play."

Arsenal did at least get on the scoresheet four minutes from time through the unlikely figure of Holding when the centre-back smashed home.

But even if there is an Arsenal response, City look imperious as they close in on not only a third consecutive Premier League title, but a treble.

PL: Erling Haaland enters record books as Manchester City crush Arsenal 4-1

Tottenham sacked interim manager Cristian Stellini on Monday after Chairman Daniel Levy branded Sunday's 6-1 defeat at Newcastle "wholly unacceptable". Stellini, who was only put in charge last month after his former boss Antonio Conte left the club, will be replaced by Ryan Mason with immediate effect. Conte's long-term assistant won only one of his four games in charge, dealing what appears a fatal blow to Spurs' chances of Champions League football next season.

Tottenham still sit fifth in the Premier League but are six points adrift of the top four and have played at least one game more than the sides directly above them. A difficult season hit a new low at St James' Park as Spurs were 5-0 down after just 21 minutes.

"Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable," said Levy in a club statement. "Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time."

However, the decision to replace Conte with a member of his backroom staff in the first place has opened Levy up to more criticism from fans.

"We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine," Levy added. "I met with the player committee today - the squad is determined to pull together to ensure the strongest possible finish to the season. After finishing fourth under Conte last season, hopes were high that Tottenham could go even better this campaign as the former Chelsea boss was armed with over £100 million ($124 million) of new signings.

But after just one defeat in their opening 10 league games, Spurs have lost 10 of their last 22.

An astonishing rant by Conte, pointing the finger at his players' inability to perform under pressure, ended the Italian's time in charge. But things did not improve under Stellini as Spurs blew a goal and a man advantage at relegation-threatened Everton to draw 1-1 and lost 3-2 at home to Bournemouth before their collapse at Newcastle.

Tottenham's malaise has raised questions over the future of star striker Harry Kane.

The England captain has just one year left on his contract and is attracting interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester United.

The club's managing director of football Fabio Paratici also resigned last week after losing his appeal against a 30-month global ban from performing his role.

Paratici was handed the suspension by the Italian football federation (FIGC) in January after his former club Juventus were found guilty of false accounting.

Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time." Tottenham Hotspur sack interim manager Cristian Stellini following Newcastle beatdown

Tottenham Hotspur are considering the future of interim head coach Cristian Stellini after they suffered a big 1-6 defeat to Newcastle at St. James’ Park in the Premier League. Spurs, who sacked Antonio Conte at the end of last month are now considering replacing Stellini as their hopes of finishing in the top four are dampened with only one win in four matches for the North London side.

According to Skysports, the defeat did not go well with the hierarchy of the London side and were left to rue. Spurs conceded five goals in the opening 20 minutes of the contest while Newcastle added another one in the second half. Harry Kane did get a consolation goal in the contest but Spurs were far from their best against a direct rival for the top four.

"I said earlier I wouldn't be surprised if Tottenham were discussing the future of Cristian Stellini and that's exactly what's happening. They are discussing his future,” Sky Sports News' Paul Gilmour reported.

"It is unclear at this stage whether he'll be in charge of the game with Man Utd on Thursday night. Ryan Mason would be the obvious candidate to step in.

"Those discussions are ongoing. His future as the acting head coach is up for discussion,” the report added.

Spurs will have a tough run towards the end of the season with them facing Manchester United at home with Liverpool coming up on the weekend at Anfield. Spurs will look to finish on a high as they still have an outside chance of qualifying for the Champions League while a Europa League spot looks like a likely outcome.

As things stand, Newcastle are third in the table while Manchester United are fourth. The race for Europe is already heating up as the likes of Brighton and Aston Villa are also in running for Europe with Liverpool still in the run-in.

Premier League: Tottenham discussing future of acting head coach Cristian Stellini

Newcastle's hammering of Tottenham Hotspur has effectively ended the Top-Four race in the Premier league. With only a handful of games to go, have Newcastle and Man United confirmed their champions league spot for next season?

Is the top four-race over in the Premier League? | WION Sports Extra

Newcastle United obliterated Premier League top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur with a five-goal salvo in the opening 21 minutes on the way to a 6-1 rout at a rocking St James' Park on Sunday. A game billed as a crucial six-pointer in the race to secure Champions League qualification was effectively all over before the clock had reached 10 minutes as fifth-placed Tottenham collapsed like a pack of cards.

Jacob Murphy got the scoreboard ticking in the second minute after Hugo Lloris spilled a Joelinton shot and four minutes later Joelinton rounded Lloris to slot in his side's second goal.

Murphy then belted in Newcastle's third from long range after Tottenham conceded possession and there was a sense of disbelief in the stadium as Alexander Isak produced two clinical finishes in the space of two minutes to make it 5-0.

It was the second-earliest a team had taken a five-goal lead in Premier League history after Manchester City scored five in the opening 18 minutes against Watford in 2019.

Tottenham's fans high in the Leazes Stand had no stomach for any more humiliation with many heading for the exits and the long journey back home long before halftime.

The only question left was whether Newcastle would claim their biggest Premier League victory and whether Tottenham could avoid their heaviest top-flight defeat.

Tottenham improved after the break, although it was hard not to, with Harry Kane slotting in a consolation goal four minutes into the second half but Callum Wilson scored Newcastle's sixth one minute after coming off the bench.

It was the perfect response by Newcastle to last week's 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa and took them a big step closer to a return to the Champions League for the first time for 20 years.

Newcastle moved above Manchester United into third place with 59 points, six more than fifth-placed Tottenham who have also played a game more and whose hopes of a top-four finish now look to be all but over.

Robbie Fowler needed 11 seasons in two spells with Liverpool to become sixth among the club's all-time scorers but Mohamed Salah equalled his 183 goals in fewer than six seasons when he struck the winner against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Egyptian striker, 30, surpassed Fowler to become Liverpool's top scorer in the Premier League with 134 goals last month, and he is now also the player with the most left-footed goals in the history of the league, with 108.

Salah, and Fowler, are three goals behind Steven Gerrard, the fifth-highest scorer in Liverpool's history, while Ian Rush leads the list with 346.

"The sixth top scorer for Liverpool? It’s good to achieve this number in less than six years. Fowler is a legend for the club, so I’m proud to be equal with him after six seasons. I hope to score more goals and break more numbers," Salah told beIN Sports.

Although the three-time Premier League top scorer is not having his best season, he has scored 16 goals in the league, behind only Erling Haaland of Manchester City (32), Harry Kane of Tottenham (23) and Brentford's Ivan Toney (19).

Salah said seventh-placed Liverpool had struggled at the start of the 3-2 victory over Forest, who are battling to avoid relegation.

"In the first 15 or 20 minutes, we faced difficulty in the game. Thank God, we were able to win and get a positive result... Our focus wasn’t on who scores, the important thing is the good result.

"For the teams fighting to avoid relegation, these are life-or-death games and all games are difficult,” he added.

With seven games remaining, Liverpool are six points away from the top four and still aspiring to qualify for the European competitions next season.

Arsenal struck two late goals to escape with a point in a pulsating 3-3 home draw with bottom club Southampton but their Premier League title hopes suffered another setback on a Friday night of frazzled nerves in north London.

For much of a stomach-churning encounter it appeared Arsenal were self-destructing in their quest to hold off Manchester City and win the league for the first time since 2004. They gifted a goal to Carlos Alcaraz after 28 seconds and were 2-0 down inside 15 minutes as former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott fired home to stun the home crowd.

Gabriel Martinelli struck back for the Gunners after 20 minutes but Ruben Selles's Southampton refused to wilt and regained their two-goal lead in the 66th minute as substitute Duje Caleta-Car headed in at the back post. The visitors, seeking a first win in seven league games in their desperate battle to extend their 10-year stay in the top flight, appeared to be heading for a priceless victory.

Many Arsenal fans were heading for the exits when captain Martin Odegaard curled a shot past Gavin Bazunu in the 88th minute to throw the hosts a lifeline. And when Bukayo Saka equalised in the 90th minute the stadium was rocking on its foundations.

With the home fans willing Arsenal to find a winner, just as they did a month ago when coming back from two goals down against Bournemouth, they laid siege to the Southampton goal.

In eight nailbiting minutes of stoppage time Leandro Trossard hit the woodwork, fellow substitute Reiss Nelson's shot was deflected agonisingly wide of the post and Gabriel Jesus was denied a spot kick after tumbling in a congested penalty area.

There was to be no final twist to the plot, however, and both sets of players looked spent at the final whistle, collapsing to the turf after a draw that did little to help either side in their very different objectives.

Arsenal increased their lead over reigning champions Manchester City to five points ahead of Wednesday's blockbuster clash of the top two at The Etihad, although City now have two games in hand and are clear favourites for the title.

Southampton belied their precarious position with some courageous football, but remain bottom with 24 points, three below the safety zone having played a game more than those above them.

Despite the setback, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remained defiant. "It hasn't changed," he said.

"Obviously the task is even bigger but now we have to do the simple things better and cut out mistakes. We made it very difficult again for ourselves but the way we reacted I love my players more than ever."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp remains confident Darwin Nunez will provide "long-term" value for the Reds despite being relegated to the bench in recent weeks. A failure to reinforce Klopp's midfield last summer has been criticised as Liverpool instead plunged the vast majority of their transfer budget into a £66 million ($82 million) move for Nunez, that could rise to £88 million with add-ons.

The Uruguayan has scored 15 goals since arriving from Benfica but has fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of Cody Gakpo in January and the return to fitness of Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz.&nbsp;

Nunez came off the bench to net as Liverpool smashed Leeds 6-1 on Monday.

But it has often been a far more difficult season for Klopp's men as they sit eighth in the Premier League, nine points adrift of the top four.

"It's not helpful to go through a debut season when it's difficult for the whole team. How can a striker shine when the whole team is struggling?" Klopp said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Nottingham Forest's visit to Anfield on Saturday. "He was injured in some moments, suspended in other moments. That's not a problem at all. This is a long-term project.

"I understand that he wants to play desperately from the beginning but we have to find a way that really works for us again and then fit in the players we can use with the specific strengths.

"I am completely fine with the situation. I understand that Darwin isn't always fine. He doesn't smile in my face when he realises he won't start and says: 'Thank you boss'.

"But when you have five or six players available up front you have to make decisions and that's good."

Trent Alexander-Arnold's form has been another reason for Liverpool's slide down the table this season, but the right-back has shone recently from a new role as he has pushed into midfield in possession.

Alexander-Arnold has provided three assists in the past two games, but Klopp said it was still a work in progress.

"This slightly advanced role suits him in the moment really well. It's a challenge for everyone else to cover the spaces when we lose the ball theoretically but with him there we didn't lose that many balls, which was helpful as well," added Klopp. "It is now not the solution for all the football problems we had this year but he has potential to play that position.

"But it's not written in stone, why should we? We will see where it leads to."

Manchester City have submitted a planning application to expand the capacity of their Etihad Stadium to more than 60,000, while adding a hotel, museum and other facilities in a £300 million investment.

The plans will add around 7,000 new seats to the stadium as well as a new covered fan zone, club shop, museum and 400-bed hotel.

Last week, the Etihad was included on the list of 10 stadia which would host matches if the UK and Ireland's joint bid for organising Euro 2028 is successful, with the bid quoting a planned new capacity of 61,000.

"Over several months we have been developing concepts and designs for a best-in-class fan experience and year-round entertainment and leisure destination at the Etihad Stadium and are delighted to have now submitted a planning application to Manchester City Council," said City's managing director of operations Danny Wilson

"As with all club developments, ensuring our local community benefit is a key priority and we believe these proposals will deliver long-term economic and social opportunities, building on the regeneration work delivered in East Manchester by City Football Group since 2008."

"Over several months we have been developing concepts and designs for a best-in-class fan experience and year-round entertainment and leisure destination at the Etihad Stadium and are delighted to have now submitted a planning application to Manchester City Council," said City's managing director of operations Danny Wilson "As with all club developments, ensuring our local community benefit is a key priority and we believe these proposals will deliver long-term economic and social opportunities, building on the regeneration work delivered in East Manchester by City Football Group since 2008." Premier League: Champions Manchester City to expand Etihad stadium to over 60,000 capacity

Liverpool crushed Leeds 6-1 as Cody Gakpo's controversial opener provided the spark for the Reds' first win in five Premier League games on Monday.

Jurgen Klopp's side took the lead at Elland Road when Gakpo's goal was allowed to stand despite the ball striking Trent Alexander-Arnold's arm in the build-up.

It was reported the VAR official did not check the incident because it happened too far back in the move, but Leeds were furious at the perceived injustice.

Mohamed Salah rubbed salt into Leeds' wounds when he increased Liverpool's lead four minutes later before Luis Sinisterra got one back for the struggling hosts.

Diogo Jota's double, another Salah strike and Darwin Nunez's late effort ensured Liverpool ended their five-game winless run in all competitions.

After coming within a whisker of winning a quadruple last season, Liverpool have been reduced to scrambling to reach next season's Europa League or Europa Conference League, with the Champions League seemingly out of reach.

With that target in mind, the eighth-placed Reds are now within two points of seventh-placed Brighton.

"It's the best game we've played this season from all different perspectives," Klopp said.

"My favourite part was in the 92nd minute when we chased the poor boy on the ball from Leeds. The counter-pressing was the best for, I want to say, decades!"

Klopp has compared fan criticism of Liverpool potentially not making big-money transfers in the coming close-season as like a five-year-old asking for a Ferrari for Christmas.

But on the evidence of this composed display and the recent fightback from two goals down to draw 2-2 with leaders Arsenal, Liverpool still have the foundations in place for a return to prominence next term.

"The second half against Arsenal was super important to us. We have to do what we did tonight again and again," Klopp said.

"I hope these one-and-a-half games gives us the right sign for the end of the season.

"I would like to see us with the same desire and passion. That's the job, to bring it consistently."

Leeds crumbled again eight days after their 5-1 home defeat against Crystal Palace and sit just two points above the relegation zone with seven games left.

Javi Gracia's team were booed off after becoming only the second club to concede five or more home goals in successive Premier League games.

<h2>Rampant Reds</h2>

After marking the 34th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster before kick-off, Liverpool quickly seized the momentum before their dubious opener in the 35th minute.

Alexander-Arnold blocked Junior Firpo's pass with his elbow before picking out Salah.

When Salah passed back to Alexander-Arnold, the right-back squared for Gakpo to slot home from close range.

Leeds were fuming, only for VAR to opt against checking the incident despite their protests.

Gakpo's fifth goal since signing from PSV Eindhoven in January was followed by the latest example of Salah tormenting Leeds.

Salah's eighth goal in six appearances against Leeds came in ruthless fashion.

Jota was allowed to advance unchecked before slipping a pass to Salah, who finished with unerring precision.

Ibrahima Konate handed Leeds a goal in the 47th minute when the Liverpool centre-back allowed himself to be dispossessed by Sinisterra on the edge of the area.

Sinisterra gratefully accepted the gift as he clipped his shot over the exposed Alisson Becker.

But Leeds' comeback hopes were extinguished within five minutes as Curtis Jones' raking pass picked out Jota, who drilled past Illan Meslier from just inside the area for his first league goal in 12 months.

VAR did disallow a Liverpool goal when Salah's effort was ruled out for offside against Virgil van Dijk, but the rampant Reds still bagged their fourth of the night in the 64th minute.

Gakpo took Andrew Robertson's pass and teed up Salah for an emphatic finish from six yards.

Jota swept in Jordan Henderson's cross after 73 minutes before Nunez put the final flourish on Liverpool's powerful performance when he controlled Alexander-Arnold's pass on his chest and fired home in the 90th minute.

Premier League: Liverpool crush Leeds 6-1 after controversial opener by Gakpo

Liverpool ended their five-game winless Premier league run in style by hammering Leeds United 6-1. Digo Jota and Mohamed Salah both scored twice as the Reds revived hopes of a top-four finish. With Eight games left, can Liverpool salvage their season by qualifying for the Champions league?

Liverpool crush Leeds 6-1 to keep season alive

Injury-hit Manchester United beat relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest 2-0 on Sunday to strengthen their push for a top-four Premier League finish.

Erik ten Hag's men took full advantage of defeats for rivals Newcastle and Tottenham the previous day to climb to third in the table, courtesy of goals from Antony and Diogo Dalot.

The teams had already met three times this season, including in a two-legged League Cup semi-final -- with United winning on each occasion.

Injured United central-defensive pairing Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were replaced by Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, while Dalot came in for Tyrell Malacia.

The visitors, also missing top-scorer Marcus Rashford, were forced into a late change when midfielder Marcel Sabitzer was injured in the warm-up and replaced by Christian Eriksen, making his first start since January following an ankle injury.

Forest, who had not won in their past nine games, made four changes.

United were quickly out of the blocks and Jadon Sancho had a strike blocked in the opening moments.

The visitors dominated possession but Steve Cooper's Forest were a menace from set-pieces.

Forest goalkeeper Keylor Navas saved from Bruno Fernandes before a VAR check for a potential penalty at the other end after the ball hit Maguire's arm from a corner.

United took the lead in the 32nd minute when Antony poked home after Navas parried a powerful shot from Anthony Martial.

Dalot almost gifted Forest an equaliser shortly before half-time after some sloppy play but Taiwo Awoniyi smashed the ball well over.

Fernandes put a header wide from the centre of the box just before the break.

United continued to dominate in the second half, with Fernandes and Eriksen pulling the strings.

Portugal international Fernandes produced a stunning curling effort from the left of the box that was pushed on to the bar by Navas and Antony fired just wide.

Martial missed a glorious chance to extend United's lead when he headed wide with 20 minutes to go before Forest defender Felipe nodded over from close range.

United finally got the reward their dominance deserved in the 76th minute when Dalot burst into the box to meet a pass by Antony to score his first Premier League goal.

<h2>'Solid win'</h2>

The win leaves United three points clear of fourth-placed Newcastle after 30 games, and six clear of Tottenham, in fifth.

"Solid win," Ten Hag told the BBC. "Really focused and concentrated from start to finish."

The United boss remarked on a "really solid performance from all on the pitch today", singling out Maguire and Lindelof for praise.

"Last week I had nine fit top defenders, now I have four," he said. "We need all our players -- we are still in three competitions. We need all the players to form a top team."

The Red Devils have surpassed last season's Premier League points tally with eight matches still to play as they turn their attention to this week's Europa League and FA Cup clashes.

Forest remain in the bottom three and are in serious danger of returning to the Championship after just one season in the English top flight.

Premier League: Manchester United go third on points table after beating Nottingham 2-0

Arsenal dropped points again in the Premier league, squandering a two-goal lead for the second straight game. The draw against London rivals West Ham once again exposed the Gunners' inexperience and raised more questions about their ability to seal the title. With the game against champions Manchester City coming up, have Mikel Arteta's side already lost the Premier League title?

Arsenal squander two-goal lead again | WION Sports Extra

Arsenal's bid to win the Premier League for the first time since 2004 is in danger of imploding, but Mikel Arteta remains adamant the leaders can cope with the pressure of the title race. Arteta's side blew a two-goal lead for a second successive game as West Ham hit back to snatch a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium on Sunday.

After squandering the same advantage in last weekend's 2-2 draw at Liverpool, the Gunners once again paid the price for taking their foot off the gas. Although Arsenal are four points clear of second placed Manchester City, it is the champions who have all the momentum heading into the final weeks of a gripping title battle.

With a home game against Arsenal looming on April 26, City know they will be crowned champions if they win their last eight games.

Ominously for Arsenal, Pep Guardiola's men have already beaten them twice this season, winning 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium in the league in February, just weeks after knocking the Gunners out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory in Manchester.

For Arsenal to no longer be in control of their own destiny is a bitter pill for Arteta to swallow after the north Londoners' long spell at the top this term.

Arteta concedes Arsenal's untimely collapses against West Ham and Liverpool were self-inflicted wounds, with the Spaniard especially frustrated by the way his players took their strong position for granted on Sunday.

But he refuses to accept it was the tension of being chased so relentlessly by City that provoked the calamitous results.

- 'Ruthless mindset' -

"I'm certain it is not the pressure. It is we misunderstood what was needed in that moment," he said. "It was very different to Liverpool in terms of the pattern of play. But that is the next stage, you have to play with the same purpose when it is 2-0.

"You have to have more composure to finish the game. When you drop your level so quickly the game is there for the opponent."

Before the summit meeting with City, Arsenal host Southampton on Friday.

A victory over the bottom of the table Saints would move Arsenal seven points clear of City, who don't play in the league next weekend due to their FA Cup semi-final against Sheffield United on Saturday.

Fuelled by Erling Haaland's record-breaking goal-spree City -- winners of their last 10 games in all competitions -- have the edge in the remaining matches after the Arsenal showdown.

Their toughest tests could come on trips to Fulham and Brentford, although their progress in the Champions League might also pose a distraction.

Arsenal's trickiest fixtures could be a daunting visit to Newcastle and a home game against in-form Brighton, while a London derby against struggling Chelsea can't be taken for granted.

Arteta doesn't believe Arsenal's young squad are running out of steam towards the end of their unexpected title bid.

But he will spend the days leading up to the Southampton game searching for answers to the blip that threatens to ruin their dream season.

"Fatigue? No. The best way to put it is to convince the team they can do it. We have to dig very deep and find the solution," he said.

"We stopped playing with the purpose to score a third and fourth one. It looked too easy. We gave them hope and credit to West Ham, they took it.

Mikel Arteta confident of Arsenal not losing track in title race after successive draw in Premier League

Arsenal blew a two-goal lead for the second game in a row as Bukayo Saka's penalty miss proved crucial in the Premier League leaders' damaging 2-2 draw against West Ham on Sunday. Mikel Arteta's side struck twice in the first 10 minutes at the London Stadium thanks to goals from Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard.

But just seven days after squandering a 2-0 advantage in their 2-2 draw at Liverpool, the Gunners again cracked under the pressure of the title race.

Said Benrahma's penalty reduced the deficit for West Ham before the interval and after Saka fired his spot-kick wide early in the second half, Jarrod Bowen volleyed in an equaliser for the struggling hosts.

It was a hammer blow for Arsenal, who sit four points clear of second-placed Manchester City but have ceded the title race momentum to Pep Guardiola's team.

City had closed within three points of the Gunners after beating Leicester 3-1 on Saturday and it is the champions who have the destiny of the title in their hands despite trailing Arsenal for much of the season.

City, who have won their last 10 matches in all competitions, have a game in hand on Arsenal. With a home game against Arsenal looming on April 26, City know they will lift a fifth title in six seasons if they win their remaining eight matches.

By the time Arsenal travel to the Emirates Stadium, they will be seven points clear of City if they beat bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Friday.

Yet that gap would still look uncomfortably small to Arsenal fans fearing their team are in the process of wasting a golden opportunity to win a first title since 2004.

While City are battle-tested in handling the tension of the title race, Arsenal's young squad look to be suffering an ill-timed attack of nerves.

PL: Arsenal blow up 2-0 lead for second time as a draw against West Ham further dent their title hopes

Erling Haaland equalled the Premier League record for goals in a 38-game season on Saturday as Manchester City closed the gap on leaders Arsenal to just three points after a day of drama in the top-four race.

The Norway forward netted twice in the first half of City's 3-1 win over relegation-threatened Leicester to reach 32 goals -- the same as Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah's tally in 2017/18.

John Stones opened the scoring at the Etihad Stadium before a goal from the penalty spot and a clever dinked finish from Haaland.

Pep Guardiola substituted the 22-year-old at half-time, denying him the chance to hunt down the overall single-season record of 34 goals in the Premier League era -- set in the days of 42 games per side.

Leicester, with Dean Smith in charge for the first time, pulled a goal back in the second half through Kelechi Iheanacho but&nbsp;they slumped to a fourth straight defeat and remain second from bottom of the table.

City, chasing a fifth Premier League title in six years, are on 70 points, three behind Arsenal with eight games to go -- the Gunners play West Ham on Sunday.

The two teams meet at the Etihad on April 26 in a potential title-decider -- City's next league fixture.

"Like I said lately, it is win, win and win," said Guardiola, whose side have now won 10 consecutive games in all competitions.

"They have had an incredible run this season and I don't think they are going to drop many points, so what we have to do is be there.

"It was important for us to win today to arrive for the 'final' we have against them in the next Premier League game."

<h2>Villa form</h2>

Aston Villa put themselves in the mix for a top-four finish by beating Newcastle 3-0 for a fifth straight league win as Tottenham also lost.

Villa are still six points off the top four, but are in red-hot form after a seventh win in eight games.

Ollie Watkins, who has now scored 11 goals in 12 matches, netted twice after Jacob Ramsey had fired Unai Emery's men into an early lead.

Emery, who took over at Villa Park in October, was cautious about his side's chances of qualifying for the Champions League despite their impressive run.

"We can think about being a candidate for a Europa (League) position but the top four is very, very difficult," said the Spaniard.

"Of course if we keep winning we can add for the next weeks, but not now."

Newcastle had won their previous five games to climb to third but barely laid a glove on Villa to leave Eddie Howe's men looking over their shoulders.

With Manchester United not in action until Sunday, at Nottingham Forest, Tottenham had the chance to move into the top four but blew it as Bournemouth took a potentially decisive step towards survival with a 3-2 win.

Son Heung-min fired Spurs into an early lead, but the Cherries hit back with goals from Matias Vina and Dominic Solanke.

Substitute Arnaut Danjuma looked to have salvaged a point for Spurs when he scored against his old club two minutes from time but Dango Ouattara curled home in the 95th minute to lift Bournemouth six points clear of the relegation zone.

Brighton boosted their chances of European football with a 2-1 win at Chelsea to prolong Frank Lampard's wait for a first victory since returning to Stamford Bridge as interim manager.

Conor Gallagher opened the scoring for Chelsea but Danny Welbeck came off the bench to equalise just before half-time and Paraguayan teenager Julio Enciso won the game in spectacular style.

Crystal Palace and Wolves edged towards safety but it was a terrible day for Everton, who lost 3-1 at home to Fulham.

Bottom side Southampton look increasingly likely to be relegated after Eberechi Eze scored twice for Palace in a 2-0 win at St Mary's to clinch a third consecutive victory for the Eagles since Roy Hodgson returned as manager.

Wolves are seven points clear of the drop zone after they beat Brentford 2-0 thanks to goals from Diego Costa and Hwang Hee-chan.

Everton remain outside the relegation zone only on goal difference after they were sunk by goals from Fulham's Harrison Reed, Harry Wilson and Dan James.

Also Read: Ligue 1: Messi stunner helps PSG beat Lens 3-1 to ensure stronghold on top place Pep Guardiola substituted the 22-year-old at half-time, denying him the chance to hunt down the overall single-season record of 34 goals in the Premier League era -- set in the days of 42 games per side. Leicester, with Dean Smith in charge for the first time, pulled a goal back in the second half through Kelechi Iheanacho but they slumped to a fourth straight defeat and remain second from bottom of the table. "It was important for us to win today to arrive for the 'final' we have against them in the next Premier League game." Villa form Aston Villa put themselves in the mix for a top-four finish by beating Newcastle 3-0 for a fifth straight league win as Tottenham also lost. "Of course if we keep winning we can add for the next weeks, but not now." Newcastle had won their previous five games to climb to third but barely laid a glove on Villa to leave Eddie Howe's men looking over their shoulders. Premier League: Man City's Haaland continue dream run, Villa outclass Newcastle

Manchester United have been dealt a double blow at the business end of the season as a key defender and World Cup-winner Lisandro Martinez was ruled out for the rest of the season. Alongside Martinez, Raphael Varane is also sidelined for a few weeks with both defenders picking up injuries in the Europa League contest against Sevilla on Thursday, April 13. United are already without Marcus Rashford and will have Bruno Fernandes suspended for the second leg of the Europa League tie but will be available for the Premier League this weekend.
