Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has narrowed in on a few options for the vacant head coach role for the men’s national team, with veteran cricketers – Shane Watson and Darren Sammy emerging as top contenders for the position. Pakistan is currently without a head coach, and the board aims to lock in someone permanently instead of temporarily, as was the case with Mohammad Hafeez, whom the PCB appointed for the tours Down Under in December and January.

Pakistan's next international series is the white-ball leg against New Zealand at home in April.&nbsp;

Watson, appointed as the head coach of Quetta Gladiators in the PSL, is currently in Pakistan and has overseen a turnaround for the franchise, guiding them to their first playoffs in five seasons. On the other hand, Sammy&nbsp;also shares a dear relationship with Pakistan since his role as the captain of Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL 2017, and is hence among the names discussed for the head coach role.

Though the latest reports suggest that the PCB has approached Watson for the top position in Pakistan Cricket, the Aussie legend has yet to respond to their offer due to his work-related limitations.

Watson lives in Sydney with his young family and has a tight schedule at his disposal throughout the year. Watson serves as the coach of San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket, besides committing to Star Sports for the commentator’s role for the ICC-related events and the Indian Premier League. The lanky all-rounder had earlier worked with Ricky Ponting as an assistant for Delhi Capitals in IPL.

Like how the PCB cracked a mid-way deal with Mickey Arthur as their Director of Cricket earlier by allowing him to spend limited time with the team, mainly during marquee events, the board must find a way to rope in Watson permanently. The chances of this deal going ahead will depend on the duration the board wants Watson to stay in Pakistan.

<h2>Sammy in line for head coach role</h2>

Meanwhile, Sammy, West Indies limited-overs coach, is hugely popular among Pakistani fans, which makes his case slightly more viable than Watson's.&nbsp;

As things stand, Sammy is coaching the Peshawar Zalmi side in the PSL 2024, which has also qualified for the playoffs.

The PCB's dealing with appointing a head coach has been a complicated process. After an indifferent 2023 World Cup in India, wherein Pakistan failed to seal the semis spot despite the conditions favouring them, now-ousted PCB chief Zaka Ashraf removed Arthur and Grant Bradburn (previous full-time coach) from their positions, appointing Hafeez as the lone boss on Pakistan’s tours of Australia and New Zealand.&nbsp;

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has instructed the senior men's team to train with the army in March-April&nbsp;after the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 edition. Naqvi, who replaced Zaka Ashraf, had a word with a few Pakistani players in Islamabad&nbsp;on Tuesday (March 5)&nbsp;where he told them to undergo a 10-day training camp with the army to improve their strength and fitness.&nbsp;

It is reported that Naqvi&nbsp;was disappointed with the Pakistani&nbsp;batters’ six-hitting abilities and spoke&nbsp;about the need to focus on strength and fitness.

"When I was watching the matches in Lahore, I don't think a single one of you hit a six that went into the stands. Whenever a six like that was hit, I used to think a foreign player must have hit that. I have asked the board to make a plan that gets every player's fitness up to speed. You'll have to make a proper effort for that,” Naqvi was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo when he addressed the players in a hotel in Islamabad.

The Pakistan Army will be involved in your training, and hopefully, they'll help you out," Naqvi further opined.

The PCB chairman also pointed out that the players need to prioritise playing for the country&nbsp;over anything and everything. Recently, pacer Haris Rauf's central contract was revoked and he has been barred from participating in&nbsp;overseas franchise T20 leagues until June 30. The speedster had withdrawn from Pakistan's away Tests versus Australia and, thus, paid the price for it.

PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi instructs Pakistan players to train with army to improve strength and fitness

Former Pakistan captain Mohammed Hafeez, who was recently sacked as Men in Green's&nbsp;director of cricket, has slammed the national side for poor fitness standards. Hafeez, in a recent interaction,&nbsp;has stated that the current Pakistani players do not have the fitness to play international cricket.

Hafeez was recently removed as the director of cricket for Pakistan after the senior team's woeful run Down Under, where they lost three Tests to Australia (0-3) and five T20Is in New Zealand (going down 1-4). Soon after his contract was not extended by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the former all-rounder revealed, on X (formerly Twitter), that he will disclose the reason for Men in Green's recent failures.

Now, talking on A Sports, Hafeez ripped apart Pakistan's fitness culture and blamed former captain Babar Azam and ex-coach Mickey Arthur. "When we went to Australia, I told the players to take care of their fitness levels. I also asked the trainer about the fitness of the players. He told me a shocking thing that six months ago captain (Babar Azam) and Director of Cricket (Mickey Arthur) told me to stop checking the players on the fitness parameters and let them play the way they want," Hafeez said.

He added, "When the fat levels of the players were checked, the skin fold of all of them was high - for most players it was 1.5 times the limit. They were unfit and some of them couldn’t complete a 2 km trial run. The decision taken 6 months back overruled the set criteria for fitness. You will suffer defeats if the fitness is like that."

Hafeez also revealed that it took him two months to convince Babar&nbsp;to drop down to No. 3 spot in T20Is.&nbsp;

Hafeez said, "It took me about two months to convince Babar Azam that you have to do it for Pakistan and you are not the first one who's doing it. You are a great player, you are a wonderful player, and you play great cricket. However, you have to develop a Pakistan team. You and Rizwan are very good players, excellent players, but you are not the whole team."

"We need to develop a team and, for that, I want you to come, at number 3 because you have been playing this role in ODI cricket for the last six years, so it won't affect you. Technically, you are very solid. Thank you very much to him that he accepted this, and he played for Pakistan at No. 3 which obviously, I think is the best way to move," he further added.

In the recent past, nothing has clicked for Pakistan. They failed to enter the semifinals of the 2023 ODI World Cup, in India, which led to Babar Azam's removal as captain. Following the ODI WC, Pakistan had a miserable tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Babar Azam, Mickey Arthur put fitness in backseat: Pakistan's former director of cricket Mohammad Hafeez

On Thursday (Feb 15), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) terminated pacer Haris Rauf's central contract. The speedster has been severely penalised by the board, following a probe into his refusal to join Pakistan’s Test squad for their&nbsp;tour of Australia,&nbsp;early this year. Following a thorough hearing process conducted by a PCB committee, and taking into account&nbsp;the views of all stakeholders involved, Rauf’s central contract has been terminated from Dec&nbsp;1, 2023 and no NOC (No objection certificate) to play any foreign league will be granted up to June 30, 2024.&nbsp;

Rauf left PCB in a spot of bother in Nov 2023 when he opted out of the three-match Test series versus Australia despite&nbsp;assurance from the team management of&nbsp;managing his workload. As a result, Pakistan went ahead with an inexperienced pace attack, already&nbsp;without Naseem Shah, and lost the series 0-3. After his withdrawal, chief selector Wahab Riaz stated while announcing the squad, "He (Rauf) gave his consent, but later he changed his mind because he was worried about his fitness and the workload. His absence will affect the team combination. I was even ready to facilitate him had he not performed in Australia, but he didn't agree."

PCB terminates pacer Haris Rauf's central contract! Here's why

Pakistan cricket authorities said Thursday they would not renew the contract of national team director Mohammad Hafeez, showing him the door after disastrous tours of Australia and New Zealand.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed 43-year-old Hafeez in late 2023 after the side crashed out of the World Cup in India.

But in his brief tenure Pakistan were whitewashed 3-0 in a Test series in Australia and lost 4-1 in the Twenty20 series in New Zealand.

Mohammad Hafeez out as Pakistan national cricket team director days after general elections

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has parted ways with Director of Cricket Mohammad Hafeez following an unsuccessful stint, the board announced on Thursday (Feb 15) on their social media handles. PCB’s call to remove Hafeez from the said position comes after consecutive series losses, including the Test series against Australia and T20Is versus New Zealand.

Hafeez’s contract&nbsp;got further complicated after the Sports Ministry suggested not to proceed with long-term agreements, leading to his short-term contract ending with the conclusion of the T20I series against the Kiwis in January.

Besides, growing concerns within the board about the team’s performance under Hafeez’s tutelage also led to this decision. The appointment of the new coaching staff, including Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, and foreign coaches Simon Helmot and Adam Hollioake, failing to replicate the expected results, also pushed the board to take the call.

<h2>The sinking ship</h2>

Since the removal of former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja as the PCB chairman in December 2021, more than two people have taken over the position, leading to instability within the board, with each boss bringing changes per their needs. Not only did it create anxiety for the board members, but it also hampered the dressing room environment, leading to uncertainties everywhere.

However, with several players deciding against playing for Pakistan, choosing to represent their teams in franchise-based T20 leagues worldwide instead, it mounted pressure on Hafeez, leading to rising tensions between certain top players and him.

The tensions grew further when Hafeez showed reluctance against providing NOCs to several players, including Shaheen Afridi, Shadab Khan and Azam Khan, for the Bangladesh Premier League, putting their contract situation in jeopardy.&nbsp;

Moreover, several reports surfaced online on senior players being unhappy with Hafeez’s management, mainly because of lengthy meetings and a perceived rigid approach.&nbsp;

Pakistan Cricket Board parts ways with Director of Cricket Mohammad Hafeez following failed stint

Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) top brass is reported to be unhappy with star players, including former all-format captain Babar Azam and current T20I skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi, for their involvement in a fan interaction session, organised by their agents, on X (previously known as Twitter) lately.

Although the Q&amp;A session attracted thousands of fans, further affirming Babar and Shaheen’s popularity worldwide, a source within the PCB revealed this decision to openly interact with fans on the social media platform without keeping the board informed hasn’t been received well by the decision makers in Pakistan cricket.

"The PCB will look to revisit some of the clauses that the centrally contracted players need to adhere to," the source said, as quoted by the Times of India.&nbsp;

"The clauses covering the social media activities of contracted players are now being reviewed again by the board because it is concerned such public Q and A sessions could result in unnecessary controversies," the source added.

<h2>New boss, new rules</h2>

Considering the consistent change at the head of the table at PCB since December 2022, with four new bosses taking charge for different tenures at different times, each has tried running Pakistan Cricket his way, with players and their agents, alongside the coaching staff facing the wrath of it.

"Every PCB chairman has tried to run the board in his own way and, in some cases, even ignored the written clauses of the central contracts and given special permissions to players in the past 12 months," the source added.

As per the source, the newly-elected PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has asked for every player's contract details and transcripts of their interviews and social media content in the past few months, pushing for an overhaul in their social media policies.

"Naqvi clearly wants a revised media policy for players, and for this, the PCB could revise some clauses of the central contracts," the source concluded.&nbsp;

Although the Q&A session attracted thousands of fans, further affirming Babar and Shaheen’s popularity worldwide, a source within the PCB revealed this decision to openly interact with fans on the social media platform without keeping the board informed hasn’t been received well by the decision makers in Pakistan cricket. "The PCB will look to revisit some of the clauses that the centrally contracted players need to adhere to," the source said, as quoted by the Times of India. "The clauses covering the social media activities of contracted players are now being reviewed again by the board because it is concerned such public Q and A sessions could result in unnecessary controversies," the source added. Former Pakistan captain and chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq lashed out at Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) former chief Zaka Ashraf and blamed him for the Men in Green's dismal run in the 2023 ODI World Cup&nbsp;held in India. Ashraf resigned as the PCB chief on Jan 19. Inzamam feels Ashraf's comments during the ODI WC had a bad impact on the Babar Azam-led team, who finished fifth and failed to enter the semi-finals.&nbsp;

Inzamam recalled the time Ashraf claimed that the World Cup team was selected by the captain and chief selector and not the board. He feels this affected the team morale adversely.&nbsp;

Speaking to a Pakistani news channel, as quoted by PTI, Inzamam said, "Can you imagine the mindset of the players when during an important event like the World Cup in India they hear that the PCB Chairman is saying the team selected was not done by the board but by the captain and chief selector only."

In addition, Inzamam further revealed that&nbsp;he is still waiting for the inquiry committee report on his alleged conflict of interest while serving as PCB&nbsp;chief selector. During the ODI WC, the former Pakistani captain resigned as the chief selector due to the said allegations.

He opined, "Just think what must be going through the players' minds when they hear that an inquiry committee has been formed against the chief selector and he has resigned. Where does this happen? I am still waiting for that report of the inquiry committee against me which was formed to probe whether I had committed a conflict of interest while being the chief selector."

Inzamam mentioned that Babar-led Men in Green needed backing from all during such a high-profile tournament. However, that was not the case which resulted in their early ouster. He went on to say that there is no problem with the current Pakistan team but they need support from the board and management.

"These changes affected the performance of the team and just imagine when they can put pressure on a world-class performer like Babar Azam what would the other players be thinking. The team was struggling in the World Cup and they needed to be given full confidence but this didn't happen. There is no problem with the team, they just need confidence and backing," Inzamam added.

After the ODI WC, Pakistan have had a torrid run in international cricket. They were whitewashed in the three Tests versus hosts Australia and lost the five T20Is (1-4) to New Zealand in the Kiwi land. They won the fifth and final T20I, on Sunday (Jan 21), to avoid another whitewash.

Inzamam-ul-Haq blasts former PCB chief Zaka Ashraf for Pakistan's 2023 ODI World Cup debacle

Zaka Ashraf stepped down as the chairperson of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee late Friday (Jan 19) evening. Ashraf, who succeeded former chief Najam Sethi tendered his resignation during the board's management committee meeting in Lahore. With general elections set to take place in the nation in February, it will be interesting to see who takes the job next with Pakistan cricket already going through a chaotic period both on and off the field.

<h2>Zaka Ashraf steps down</h2>

Having taken charge of his office in June 2023 after chaos in the election of the new PCB chairman, Ashraf’s reign started with a set of tough challenges. It is reported that Ashraf handed his resignation to Patron Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, who had previously handed the committee a three-month extension to oversee the elections for the vacant role of PCB chairman and finalising the Board of Governors "at the earliest."

"In his concluding remarks, Mr Zaka Ashraf thanked the honourable Patron PCB for the confidence and trust reposed by him and extended his best wishes and prayers for the betterment of Pakistan and Pakistan cricket," the release read.

The poor post-World Cup environment in the cricketing circle of the nation also forced Inzamam-ul-Haq to resign from his post of chief selector. Zaka Ashraf steps down as PCB management committee chairman

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially sacked the trio of Micky Arthur, Grant Bradburn and Andrew Puttick after a poor string of results in recent months. The Zaka Ashraf-led PCB has acted swiftly against the trio having taken the job last May when Najam Sethi was the president of the board. The departure has taken place with immediate effect as the trio will not return. Chief operating officer Salman Naseer will now negotiate a final settlement with the trio who will be paid for the next few months as compensation.

<h2>Arthur and Co depart</h2>

"After some consultations since Mickey is already with Derbyshire and Puttick and Bradburn have found new assignments it was decided to end the matter amicably and release them from their contracts," a PCB official said.

The decision also coincides with Mohammad Hafeez’s appointment as the Director of Cricket for the national side. The trio had worked with the national side during the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup where Pakistan had a flop campaign and were eliminated in the group stage of the latter.

According to reports, there was no clause in the contracts of the trio that allowed them to work with other teams. Currently, Arthur is working with Derbyshire while Puttick is the batting coach of the Afghanistan national team. Bradburn, like Arthur, has taken over as a coach at English county side Glamorgan.

The dismissal also comes after Pakistan’s awful 3-0 defeat to Australia in the Test series Down Under. They were beaten comprehensively despite a few better performances with the bat. On the field, they went with a host of changes with Babar Azam leaving captaincy while Shan Masood was given the nod in the Test format. The team has&nbsp;a big year ahead with the T20 World Cup on the horizon.

The board appointed Mohammad Rizwan as the vice-captain in the T20I format. Pakistan last won an ICC tournament in 2017 when they beat India in the final of the Champions Trophy. Their last win in the T20 World Cup came in 2009 and will look to end that drought later in the year.

The World Cup flop already prompted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to replace team director Mickey Arthur and head coach Grant Bradburn, who had only taken over in April.

Pakistan suffered another blow on their ongoing tour of Australia when veteran spinner Noman Ali was hospitalised Friday (Dec. 22). The 37-year-old was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and has been ruled out of the remainder of the Test series. The bowler, however, is recovering from illness after going under surgery, informed the Pakistan Cricket Board.

"Noman Ali complained of sudden and severe abdominal pain yesterday, leading to examinations and scans in emergency that confirmed a diagnosis of acute appendicitis," the Pakistan Cricket Board said.

"On surgeon's advice, he underwent Laparoscopic Appendectomy today (Dec. 23)," the board added.

The medical situation puts Pakistan bowling attack under more pressure after debutant pacer Khurram Shahzad, who impressed with five wickets in the first Test, was also ruled out with an injury. Shahzad took 5/128 in Pakistan's 360-run loss in Perth but complained about discomfort and pain after the match.

Pakistan spinner Noman Ali hospitalised in Australia, ruled out of ongoing Test series

Pakistan batter Asad Shafiq has announced his retirement from all forms of the game. The right-handed batter said he isn't feeling the same zeal and excitement about continuing playing as a cricketer and decided to step aside for the same reason. Assad made the announcement after helping Karachi Whites to the National T20 Championship title.

“I am not feeling the same excitement and passion playing cricket, and neither do I have the same fitness levels required for international cricket. Which is why I have decided to say goodbye to all cricket,” Shafiq told a press conference.

Following Salman Butt’s removal from the advisory panel earlier, Shafiq’s name was tipped to come up, filling his place in the three-member committee appointed to assist the chief selector, Riaz. The former middle-order batter confirmed the news of PCB reaching out to name him on the selection panel on a paid contract.

“I have got the contract from the board, and I am looking at it, and hopefully, it will be processed soon,” said Shafiq, putting credibility on the speculations of him joining the PCB as a selector.

He has scored 12 centuries and 27 fifties.

But before the start of this season, I had decided this would be my last season because I felt that closing in on 38 years of age, this was time to retire instead of people telling me to step down,” Asad added. Meanwhile, Pakistan is in Australia for the three-match Test series, starting with the first match in Perth on Thursday (Dec 14).

Soon to be Pakistan selector, Asad Shafiq retires from professional cricket

Pakistan men's cricket team have reached Australia for the upcoming three-match Test series, starting on Dec 14. Ahead of the first Test, in Perth, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram shared a piece of advice for the new Pakistan team management, who came on board following Babar Azam-led Pakistan's ODI World Cup 2023 debacle (where they failed to reach the semi-finals). Akram has backed new team director-cum-head coach&nbsp;Mohammed Hafeez, chief selector Wahab Riaz and members of the selection committee -- Kamran Akmal and Iftikhar Anjum -- to come good, while&nbsp;also sharing some advice with them.

Akram said in a video shared on X, formerly Twitter, "Pakistan team has reached Australia and I wish them all the best for the Test series. Mohammad Hafeez has joined the Pakistan Cricket Board as team director and Wahab Riaz has taken over as chief selector, Kamran Akmal and all others.&nbsp;These are present cricketers. This is their time and let’s give them at least one year to prove themselves. And one more advice, don’t hold press conferences every three minutes. Stick to your decisions and be brave."

Akram, thus, took a cheeky jibe at chief selector Riaz, who held a press conference to clarify his position on the appointment and the subsequent sacking of Salman Butt as the selection consultant following a heavy public backlash.

Wahab was quoted as saying in a press conference, "Salman Butt isn't on any PCB panel. For me, he is a good cricketing mind who understands cricket and has been covering domestic cricket for the past 2-3 years. He was made my consultant just to get his opinion, based on which some media houses and people started doing propaganda.

“As a chief selector, it's my decision as to who will work with me and whose support I need. But people started discussing nepotism and dosti, due to which I am reverting this decision. I have already spoken to Salman Butt and told him that he cannot be a part of my team," he added.

Butt's initial appointment led to a huge outrage, leading to his sacking in a flash. The newly-appointed Pakistan team management would hope for a smooth ride going ahead. Meanwhile, the Shan Masood-led Pakistan team has a huge task ahead, that of winning their maiden Test series in Australia. The first Test commences at the&nbsp;Perth Stadium, Perth on Dec 14.

Don't do PCs every 3 minutes: Akram's advice for new Pakistan management, asks them to 'be brave'

A day after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed ‘tainted’ ex-cricketer Salman Butt, among two others, as consultants to chief selector Wahab Riaz, the board has withdrawn his name from the advisory committee following an uproar within. Riaz, a close friend of Butt, addressed the issue in the press conference, calling for Salman Butt’s name to be removed from the list.

Amidst all the talk surrounding Butt’s shock appointment, Riaz admitted that the media tried to defame the PCB over the same.&nbsp;

Upon claiming his priority is to maintain his and Pakistan Cricket Board’s reputation, knowing the stakes, Wahab announced Butt’s removal with immediate effect.

Meanwhile, former cricketers Kamran Akmal and Rao Iftikhar will remain on the advisory panel.

All three were handed separate bans, with Butt serving the longest of the three. Even after his ban was lifted, Butt participated in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and domestic cricket but never held any post in any capacity in the PCB. Considering this, Butt’s selection raised quite a few eyebrows across the country.

PCB appoints ex-stars Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal among consultants to chief selector

Days after Pakistan batter Azam Khan was fined 50 per cent of his match fee&nbsp;for displaying the Palestinian flag on his bat, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a U-turn on its decision.&nbsp;

PCB on Tuesday (Nov 28) released a statement saying it had reviewed the matter and decided to waive the penalty imposed by the match officials.&nbsp;

"Azam Khan's 50 per cent fine imposed by match officials has been reviewed and waived off by the Pakistan Cricket Board," PCB said in a release.&nbsp;

It was during the National T20 Cup 2023-24 match between&nbsp;Karachi Whites and Lahore Blues at the National Stadium in Karachi on Sunday (Nov 26) that Azam was reprimanded for his actions.

Playing for the Whites, the wicketkeeper-batter came out to the crease with his bat sporting a Palestinian flag on the bottom of the spine. It was presumably a way for Azam to show solidarity with the Palestinians who are currently the collateral damage in the Israel-Hamas war.&nbsp;

The message, however, did not go down well with the match officials as he was found guilty of&nbsp;committing a level-I offence. He violated&nbsp;Article 2.4 of the PCB Code of Conduct For Players and Players Support Personnel for repeated failure to comply with the instruction or directive of an umpire during a match.

According to Geo News, Azam had the same sticker depicting the Palestine flag on his bat in the previous two games of the National T20 Cup. However, no one had warned him before Sunday's game when the picture of his bat went viral on social media.&nbsp;

While Azam received stick for his actions, similar was not the case when national team wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan came out in support of Gazans.&nbsp;

Notably, during the recently concluded World Cup in India, Rizwan dedicated Pakistan's league match victory against Sri Lanka to the people of Gaza.

"This was for our brothers and sisters in Gaza.&nbsp;Happy to contribute in the win. Credits to the whole team and especially Abdullah Shafique and Hassan Ali for making it easier," Rizwan posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.&nbsp;

After the Sri Lanka match, the wheels came off for the Pakistan team as it lost four successive matches&nbsp;which eventually contributed to the exit from the marquee tournament.&nbsp;

Pakistan cricket team's new director Mohammad Hafeez will serve as the head coach for the upcoming tours of Australia and New Zealand as well. Pakistan travel to Australia for three Tests in December before heading to New Zealand for five T20Is in January.

This is a huge step up for 43-year-old Hafeez who was named the team director just a day prior in the aftermath of Pakistan's horrible World Cup 2023 campaign. The developments were reported by ESPNCricinfo which also says that the two roles - head and team director - have been merged by the PCB.

The status of current team director Mickey Arthur and head coach Grant Bradburn, however, remains unknown. While they have not been relieved of their duties yet, it could only be because the interim committee which is currently heading the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) lacks the authority for the same.

The appointment of Hafeez as the head coach for the time being concluded the tumultuous 24-hour period in Pakistan cricket which saw their all-format captain Babar Azam stepping down. Babar was told that he could continue as the Test skipper but would be relieved of the job in the white-ball format. The former skipper decided to let go of it all.

Shan Masood replaced Babar Azam as the Test skipper while pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi was named the T20 skipper. With no ODIs to be played in the near future, the PCB hasn't named an ODI captain yet.&nbsp;

With all positions filled, only the chief selector job remains vacant after former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq resigned from the post amid scrutiny of the team's poor performance by the board.&nbsp;

Pakistan name team director Mohammed Hafeez as coach for tours of Australia and New Zealand

Days after the Pakistan Team got ruled out of the World Cup 2023 following their loss to England in the last league match, their cricket board brought in several changes. While veteran all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez got picked as the new director of men's cricket, recently retired seamer Wahab Riaz is named the new chief selector, replacing Inzamam-ul-Haq.

Following a failed World Cup 2023 campaign amidst growing pressure of conflict of interest from the other end, Inzamam - appointed to head the selection committee in the lead-up to the marquee event, stepped down from his post on October 30, at a time when the competition was still on, with Pakistan alive in the semis race.

Though local media reported Inzamam’s connections with a UK-based company - Yazoo International Ltd, leading to all trouble, the veteran captain resigned immediately, distancing himself from any controversy.

Meanwhile, Wahab, who retired from international cricket in August this year, remains active in the franchise cricket circle. Although he hasn’t officially parted ways with the Pakistan Cricket League (PSL), his team - Peshawar Zalmi, thanked him for his exceptional service to this league and game over the years.

Their post read, "Thank you for your countless contributions over the past 8 years and you will always remain an integral part of Zalmi family."

"The [PCB's] decision to involve former players in cricketing matters is commendable, and I am willing to work for the betterment of Pakistan cricket.&nbsp;

"Heading a selection committee is a challenging task. We have a significant Australia tour coming up that is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle and a T20I series against New Zealand that will allow us to develop a formidable unit leading up to the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies in June next year,” Wahab said in a board statement.

Their post read, "Thank you for your countless contributions over the past 8 years and you will always remain an integral part of Zalmi family." Best wishes @WahabViki ⚡#Zalmi #YellowStorm pic.twitter.com/fwKZnyhO5G — Peshawar Zalmi (@PeshawarZalmi) November 17, 2023 × While addressing the nation upon getting picked as the new chief selector, Wahab, in a video recording uploaded on PCB’s official handles, said, "The [PCB's] decision to involve former players in cricketing matters is commendable, and I am willing to work for the betterment of Pakistan cricket. My primary goal would be to give weightage to the top performers in domestic cricket and announce well-rounded squads equipped with the necessary skill sets. Besides, Babar Azam had resigned as the captain from all formats, with the PCB appointing Shan Masood as the new Test skipper and Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new white-ball captain.

I am honoured: Shaheen Afridi reacts after taking new role in T20 format for Pakistan

Hours after Babar Azam stepped down as the captain in all three formats, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced batter Shan Masood will take over as Test captain while Shaheen Shah Afridi will lead the team in T20Is.&nbsp;

Masood will don the captain's hat for the first time when Pakistan travel to Australia next month for the three-match Test series. The stylish batter made his Test debut against South Africa, way back in 2013 but has only featured in 30 Test matches.&nbsp;

As for Afridi, the left-arm seamer has been an exceptional bowler in the format, having featured in 52 matches in his relatively short career.&nbsp;

PCB in a statement said the decision was taken after Babar came down to meet chairman Zaka Ashraf at the headquarters in Lahore.&nbsp;

"Babar was asked to continue as Test captain, while he has been relieved of captaincy in white-ball cricket for him to focus on one format," read the statement.&nbsp;

Apart from the change in the captaincy duties, the PCB has changed the portfolio of the entire&nbsp;coaching staff including Director Cricket Mickey Arthur.

"All coaches will continue to work in National Cricket Academy while PCB will announce the new coaching staff in due course for the upcoming series in Australia and New Zealand."

<h2>Babar's resignation</h2>

Earlier in the evening, Babar in a statement announced that he was giving up on captaincy duties, terming it a 'difficult decision' to make.&nbsp;

"Today, I am stepping down as the captain of Pakistan in all formats. It's a difficult decision but I feel it is a right time for this call," wrote Babar on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“I want to express my sincere thanks to the Pakistan Cricket Board for entrusting me with this significant responsibility,” Babar added.

The Pakistan batter said he will continue to turn up for the country in all formats and extend full support to the new captain.

"I will continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats. I am here to support the new captain and the team with my experience and dedication."

Babar's captaincy was in problem the moment the side lost against arch-rival India. During the World Cup PCB chief met&nbsp;Sarfaraz Khan, fanning rumours that the former captain was being prepared to take over the reins once again from Babar.&nbsp;

Former Pakistan cricketer Abdul Razzaq has come under the scanner for his controversial comments during a recent press event. In a video clip of the event that has gone viral on social media, Razzaq can be heard mentioning popular Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's name in a distasteful manner.&nbsp;

While Razzaq espoused his repugnant statements, former teammates Umar Gul and Shahid Afridi sitting beside him on the stage were seen clapping and applauding.

After Pakistan made an early exit from the World Cup in India, Razzaq pointed fingers at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) but in doing so, gave a bizarre example that has brought him flak from all quarters.&nbsp;

“Younis Khan had good intentions as a captain and it gave me confidence to perform better. Everyone over here is talking about the intention and Pakistan’s team. As the controversy escalated, Gul took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to clear the air. The former pacer admitted what Razzaq said was wrong whilst adding that he didn't support his ex-teammate's statement.&nbsp;

While doubts remain around Babar Azam's captaincy future, it has come to light that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering sacking its entire group of support staff members, according to Samaa TV. The likes of head coach Grant Bradburn, team director Mickey Arthur and batting coach Andrew Puttick could be given the sack as PCB attempts to rejig the order after a dismal World Cup campaign in India. PCB is expected to conduct a thorough review of Pakistan's poor show in the marquee tournament where the team failed to reach the knockouts after all the hype. PCB chief Zaka Ashraf is set to conduct an emergency meeting with former captain Younis Khan to announce the changes in the setup. Arthur was hired as the team director by former PCH chief Najam Sethi and fulfilled his duty for the initial few months remotely through an online medium which brought a lot of flak. Arthur did his reputation no favours when he came up with a flurry of amusing excuses to shield Pakistan's failure. One of Arthur's excuses was that the stadium DJ did not play 'Dil Dil Pakistan' which affected the morale of the players. As for Grant Bradburn and Andrew Puttick, they have been tied down with lengthier contracts, running until May 2025. Any decision of sacking by the PCB would mean a hefty severance package for the two. Morne Morkel resigns The development comes hot on the heels of Pakistan bowling coach Morne Morkel resigning from his position as the bowling outfit floundered big time in the World Cup. The former South African speedster had joined the Pakistan backroom staff on a six-month contract in June this year, with an eye to go the distance in the World Cup. His first assignment with the Pakistan team was the tour to Sri Lanka for the two-match Test series. The team emerged victorious in the island nation but it all went south from there. The Pakistan team could not qualify for the finals of the Asia Cup, losing to arch-rivals India in a humiliating manner before repeating the cycle yet again in the World Cup. Also read | World Cup 2023: Morne Morkel quits as Pakistan bowling coach after WC debacle Apart from poor bowling and batting performances, fingers are being raised at Babar Azam for his directionless captaincy. Pakistan as a unit looked miles behind the pace when compared to other teams. CWC 2023: 'PCB is downgrading the morale of Pakistan cricketers by constantly...' - Danish Kaneria

On Monday (Oct 30), a big development came from Pakistan cricket as Inzamam-ul-Haq, former Pakistan captain and 1992 ODI World Cup winner, stepped down as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief selector. This comes amid Babar Azam-led Pakistan's ODI World Cup struggles, where they have lost four games on the trot and are on the verge of an early exit. A lot of fingers were pointed at chief selector Inzamam post the national side's struggles. However, not many expected him to resign in the middle of the mega event in India.&nbsp;

Inzamam resigned&nbsp;after media reports claimed the former cricketer had a stake in a player’s management company registered with the PCB. The reports further claimed that&nbsp;several top players including Babar and Mohammad Rizwan were associated with the company. The veteran also reacted to his resignation. On Monday evening, he said in an interview, on&nbsp;SAMAA TV&nbsp;programme ‘Zor Ka Jor’ that he went to the board after the allegations and asked them to hold an inquiry. Following this, he decided to step down. He, however, claimed that he is willing to sit with the board after the completion of the probe.&nbsp;

<h2>'I am a human and it hurts. I have a 20-year cricket career....'</h2>

During the interaction, he said, "We are cricketers and we are available all the time to serve the country. Since I am facing an inquiry, and as the nature of my job is, I should step down and let them conduct the probe." He further pointed out, "I am a human and it hurts. I have a 20-year cricket career during which I represented Pakistan. I am not someone who people don’t know. When such allegations are levelled, it hurts.”

Inzamam denied having any link with the&nbsp;management company for players, namely Saya Corporation. In this regard, he added, "I must tell you very clearly that such companies are recommended by the ICC and PCB has all their data."

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said, "The committee will submit its report and any recommendations to the PCB management in an expeditious manner."

On Monday (Oct 30), a big development came from Pakistan cricket as Inzamam-ul-Haq, former Pakistan captain and 1992 ODI World Cup winner, stepped down as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief selector. This comes amid Babar Azam-led Pakistan's ODI World Cup struggles, where they have lost four games on the trot and are on the verge of an early exit. A lot of fingers were pointed at chief selector Inzamam post the national side's struggles. However, not many expected him to resign in the middle of the mega event in India. Inzamam resigned after media reports claimed the former cricketer had a stake in a player’s management company registered with the PCB. The reports further claimed that several top players including Babar and Mohammad Rizwan were associated with the company. The veteran also reacted to his resignation. On Monday evening, he said in an interview, on SAMAA TV programme ‘Zor Ka Jor’ that he went to the board after the allegations and asked them to hold an inquiry. Following this, he decided to step down. He, however, claimed that he is willing to sit with the board after the completion of the probe. 'I am a human and it hurts. I have a 20-year cricket career....' During the interaction, he said, "We are cricketers and we are available all the time to serve the country. Since I am facing an inquiry, and as the nature of my job is, I should step down and let them conduct the probe." He further pointed out, "I am a human and it hurts. I have a 20-year cricket career during which I represented Pakistan. I am not someone who people don’t know. 'When such allegations are levelled...': Inzamam on his resignation as PCB chief selector amid WC struggles

Former Pakistan cricketer Inzamam-ul-Haq has resigned from his position as the chief selector of the men's national cricket team. The resignation comes amid a string of disappointing performances from the Pakistan team at the ongoing ODI World Cup in India.&nbsp;

Inzamam sent his resignation letter to the Pakistan Cricket Board chief Zaka Ashraf on Monday (Oct 30), days after the side lost its fourth consecutive World Cup match. At the same time as Inzamam's resignation news, PCB released a statement saying it had set up a five-member fact-finding committee to investigate 'conflict of interest' allegations related to the&nbsp;team selection.

World Cup 2023: Inzamam-ul-Haq resigns as Pakistan's chief selector after string of bad results

Pakistan Cricket, both on and off the field, is in shambles. While the cricket team has failed to produce noteworthy performances during World Cup 2023, the drama unfolding outside of it has created unrest among players and the board.&nbsp;

Following allegations laid by ex-Pakistan captain Rashid Latif on national TV of PCB head Zaka Ashraf avoiding Babar Azam’s call or messages, PCB’s Chief Operating Officer, Salman Naseer, cleared the air by allowing the WhatsApp chat between the two to get showcased on live TV.

After Latif’s remarks made headlines, a local TV channel contacted Zaka Ashraf to get clarity on the matter. Revealing the details of any conversation between the two, Zaka commented,&nbsp;

“He [Latif] says that I don’t pick up his [Babar’s] call,” Ashraf said. “He’s never given me a call. The chief operating officer or the director of international cricket is expected to speak with the captain of the team,” the PCB chief added.

To support his claim, Salman Naseer, on behalf of Zaka, during a live chat, allowed the interviewer to showcase the WhatsApp chat between the two. In the leaked WhatsApp chat revealed, Naseer asked Babar,&nbsp;“Babar, there’s also been news circulating on TV and social media that you have been calling Chairman, and he’s not answering. Have you lately given him a call?”

To which Babar’s response was, “Salam Salman bhai, I have not made any call to sir.”

<h2>Unrest in Pakistan Cricket</h2>

The Pakistan Team has won just two out of the six contested matches and suffered losses in four of them. Such results have impacted their chances of making the semis.

Although mathematically, they can still make through, given the unrest inside the dressing room and outside of it, they look unlikely to break loose and reach the final four.

Following losing to Afghanistan in a shocker in Chennai, the PCB released a statement asking fans and pundits to back the players instead of putting them under the bus.

Meanwhile, former Pakistan coach and legend Waqar Younis slammed those behind this episode, saying people involved must be happy now. Waqar requested fans and people to do this in future, as Babar is an asset to Pakistan cricket.&nbsp;

Babar Azam’s private chat leaked on TV; PCB chief Zaka Ashraf clarifies stance on alleged rift

Pakistan have not lived up to expectations so far in the ongoing ICC Men's ODI World Cup in India. After winning their first two games, Babar Azam-led Men in Green were on a roll before losing four games on the trot. Thus, they are languishing at the sixth position with four points, and a Net Run Rate of -0.387, and are on the brink of an early elimination. They faced high-flying South Africa in match 26 of the ten-team tournament on Friday (Oct 27), in Chennai, and went down by a wicket in a thriller, in defence of 270, to further decrease their chances of going ahead into the semi-finals.&nbsp;

However, Babar &amp; Co. are not out of the semi-final race as yet. There is a remote chance of them making it to the semi-finals but they need to win all their remaining games, that too by a big margin, and also hope for other results to go in their favour. As per a report in Cricket Addictor,&nbsp;Here are all the possible scenarios for the 1992 winners:

<h2>Pakistan's Qualification Scenario For Semi-Finals:</h2>

- To win all their remaining games, beat New Zealand, Bangladesh and England (by big margins as well)
- Hope for England,&nbsp;Afghanistan and Bangladesh to beat five-time winners Australia
- For Pakistan to remain alive, they need the Kiwis to&nbsp;defeat Sri Lanka
- Hope for India's win over the Netherlands.
- South Africa and Sri Lanka to beat Afghanistan, who have defeated Pakistan and England in the ongoing competition
- India or Bangladesh to defeat Sri Lanka

Talking about Pakistan's game versus the Proteas, the Babar-led side opted to bat first and rode on the captain's 50, Saud Shakeel's 52 and Shadab Khan's vital 43 to post 270 in 46.4 overs. In reply, Temba Bavuma-led South Africa chased down the score in the 48th over with one wicket in hand. Aiden Markram (91) and Tabraiz Shamsi (4 for 60 and 4 not out) were the star performers for the Proteas, with the latter earning the Player-of-the-Match award.&nbsp;

At the post-match presentation, Babar said after the loss, "We are very close, we did not finish&nbsp;well. Very disappointing for the whole team. We fought back very&nbsp;well. In the batting we were 10-15 short. The fast bowlers&nbsp;and spinners fought well but unfortunately it was not to be. It is part of the game, in DRS it is part of the game. Had he given it out, it would have favored us. We have an opportunity to win this and stay in the race but not to be. We will try our best in the next 3 matches and put our efforts and play for Pakistan. Let's see where we will stand after that."

CWC '23: How Pakistan can still qualify for semi-finals after four successive defeats - Scenarios EXPLAINED

Former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif has dropped a bombshell saying the national men's team players haven't been paid their salaries for the last five months. Latif's revelation comes at a time when Pakistan are on the precipice of crashing out of the World Cup in India after a string of disappointing performances.&nbsp;

According to Latif, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) informed players that the central contracts they had signed were now being reconsidered, which prompted captain Babar Azam to approach the governing body for cricket in the subcontinent nation.

Latif added that Babar was being ignored by the top officials of PCB as he attempted to have some clarification regarding the situation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"In the Pakistani media, many things are happening. Perhaps they are false news. I will provide you with the true news, which was kept on hold. Babar Azam has been trying to contact the chairman for the past two days, but they are not responding. He is messaging Salman Naseer (Chief Operating Officer), and he is messaging Usman Walha (Director of International Cricket),” said Latif.&nbsp;

"If players haven't been paid for five months, do you think they will play?," he added.&nbsp;

The legendary Pakistan wicketkeeper stated that he had enough information about the rot in PCB that even a two-hour show would not be enough.&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: 'Players haven't been paid for 5 months', former Pakistan cricketer makes bombshell claim

Pakistan Cricket Team unlocked its worst record at the World Cups by losing their fourth straight game in this edition, this time to South Africa by just one wicket in Chennai the other night. Although unlike how they played in the matches before this, Pakistan were competitive and took the game to the wire, thanks to their seamers, but eventually fell shy of winning over the Proteas. Head coach Mickey Arthur shared his thoughts on an almost ‘perfect game’ for Pakistan, but first, he had a request for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

After Pakistan’s shocking defeat at the hands of Afghanistan at the same venue on Monday, PCB, in its efforts to curb the pressure on the team and the management, sent out a message for everyone, asking fans to support the team in this dark hour instead of criticising them.&nbsp;

Replying to the same, Arthur noted that despite the best efforts from everyone present inside the dressing room, the blame game, the ‘witch-hunt’ would begin. He urged the PCB to stop with it as Pakistan, mathematically, still has a chance of reaching the semis despite four losses in six matches.

"They're going to be blaming everybody, don't worry. It's just the way of the world,” Arthur said during the post-match presentation after South Africa’s game.

"It's really unfair to start a witch-hunt, certainly on Babar Azam, on Inzi [chief selector, Inzamam-ul-Haq], on our coaches, on the management team."

"What I do know is the boys have tried, and the effort of the coaching staff, the effort of the players has been first-class. If they would see the amount of effort that the players and staff put in, they would be amazed," the head coach added.

<h2>You never know – Arthur on team’s semis chances</h2>

Realistically, Pakistan looks unlikely to reach the semis, but with numbers involved, they can. Outside of winning their remaining matches with better NRRs, the Pakistan Team will rely on several permutations and combinations that could help them reach the last four.

With their bowling clicking this late in their campaign, Pakistan would give themselves another chance to stay alive in the tournament.&nbsp;

Speaking on the same lines, Arthur sounded optimistic and said, still anything can happen in regards to Pakistan making it to the semis.

"You never know," Arthur said of their lingering knock-out hopes.&nbsp;

"What I do know is that we need to go and assess combinations again, we need to have a look at the holes we have within our team. We need to we need to start improving in a lot of areas, and we've got to go home and finish this tournament with three victories. That's what I do know. Every day we'll be trying, and we'll be striving to do that."

Pakistan’s next match is against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Tuesday (Oct 31).

Although unlike how they played in the matches before this, Pakistan were competitive and took the game to the wire, thanks to their seamers, but eventually fell shy of winning over the Proteas.
