China witnessed a significant decline in the number of births last year. Despite extensive government initiatives to support parenthood, the nation's births plunged by 10 per cent, hitting the lowest level on record.&nbsp;

This alarming drop has raised concerns that the country has become demographically imbalanced.

<h2>Official data</h2>

According to a report published by the National Health Commission, China recorded just 9.56 million births in 2022. This marks the lowest figure since records were first logged in 1949.

This comes as just last year, China's population shrank for the first time in six decades, dropping to 1.41 billion people.

The trend has led domestic demographers to express concerns that China may grow 'old before it gets rich'.&nbsp;

Such a scenario could hinder economic growth as government revenues drop, and health and welfare costs soar, increasing government debt, they warn.

<h2>What is causing the population to decline?</h2>

As per Reuters, several factors contribute to this decline. This includes the high costs of childcare and education, increased unemployment, job insecurity, and gender discrimination.&nbsp;

These challenges, as per the record, have discouraged many young couples from having more than one child or even having children at all.

Previously, much of this demographic decline could be traced back to China's one-child policy, that was enforced in 1980. In 2015, it was abandoned and since then things have somewhat changed.

Health authorities, as cited by Reuters, report that nearly 40 per cent of Chinese newborns in the past year were the second child of a married couple, and 15 per cent came from families with three or more children.

China has been facing a steady fall in its birth rates since 2017. To encourage balanced long-term population development in the face of the decline, Chinese authorities have in recent times have implemented various measures, including releasing a guideline outlining a number of policies for prenatal and postnatal support. These include efforts to expand childcare services and financial incentives to encourage families to have more children.

Caroline Ellison, a close associate and&nbsp;former girlfriend of Sam Bankman-Fried, on Wednesday testified that she was "terrified" that the truth would come out and that she was relieved when the FTX crypto exchange collapsed last year.

Ellison, the former co-CEO of Alameda Research, Bankman-Fried's crypto hedge fund, in a teary testimony during the fraud trial revealed that her former boyfriend had led her to commit fraud.

<h2>Anything for love?</h2>

As per Ellison's testimony, Bankman-Fried directed her to falsify Alameda's balance sheets. This was supposed to keep lenders at bay amid a downturn in cryptocurrency markets in 2022.

"I felt a sense of relief that I didn't have to lie anymore," she said tearfully.

Ellison, who has confessed to assisting in misappropriating billions of FTX customer assets, revealed that these manipulated balance sheets hid the fact that Alameda had borrowed approximately $10 billion in FTX customer funds.

The Stanford University graduate also disclosed that&nbsp;Bankman-Fried instructed her to use the fund's line of credit on the FTX cryptocurrency exchange to repay loans in June 2022.

During her testimony, Ellison emphasised that Bankman-Fried did not adhere to principles like "don't lie" and "don't steal" and described himself as a "utilitarian" who believed that the most crucial rule was to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number of people.

<h2>Bankman-Fried's not guilty plea</h2>

Ellison, along with two other former members of Bankman-Fried's inner circle, have pleaded guilty to fraud charges. They've also agreed to cooperate with the Manhattan US attorney general's office, reports Reuters.

However, Bankman-Fried has entered a not-guilty plea to two counts of fraud and five counts of conspiracy. He also contends that while he made mistakes running FTX, he never intended to steal funds.

Prosecutors allege that Bankman-Fried used customer funds to support Alameda, purchase real estate, and donate over $100 million to US political campaigns.&nbsp;

Gary Wang, FTX's former technology chief, also testified during the trial. As per Wang's testimony, Bankman-Fried falsely tweeted that FTX was "fine" in November, despite the exchange facing a surge in withdrawal demands. Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of using white phosphorus munitions during its military operations in Gaza and Lebanon.&nbsp;

The human rights organisation emphasised that Israel's deployment of such weapons poses a severe threat to the safety of civilians, and can potentially cause significant and long-lasting injuries.

<h2>White phosphorus&nbsp;</h2>

Human Rights Watch, as per a Reuters report, claimed to have verified the authenticity of videos captured in Lebanon on October 10 and in Gaza on October 11. These videos reportedly depict "multiple airbursts of artillery-fired white phosphorus over the Gaza City port and two rural locations along the Israel-Lebanon border."

The organisation further shared links to two videos that were circulated on social media platforms, asserting that they showcase the use of "155mm white phosphorus artillery projectiles, seemingly for the purpose of creating smokescreens, marking, or signalling." Both videos show scenes near the border shared by Israel and Lebanon, said Human Rights Watch.

However, as per Reuters, the group did not provide links to videos showing their alleged use in Gaza.

<h2>Israel denies accusation</h2>

<h2>What are white phosphorus munitions?</h2>

White phosphorus refers to weaponised phosphorus, which, as per Reuters, is used to incinerate enemy positions.

Its use on the battlefield is legal for the purposes of making smoke screens, generating illumination, marking targets or burning bunkers and buildings.

Because of its legal uses, international conventions don't ban its use as a chemical weapon. However, white phosphorus is known to cause serious burns and spark fires.

It is considered an incendiary weapon under Protocol III of the Convention on the Prohibition of Use of Certain Conventional Weapons, which prohibits its use against military targets located among civilians. However, Israel has not signed this protocol and is not bound by its provisions.

Previously, in 2013, Israel's military announced plans to phase out the use of white phosphorus smokescreen munitions. It had used the munitions during the 2008-2009 offensive in Gaza, this had drawn allegations of war crimes from several rights organisations.

Speaking to press during a refuelling stop in Ireland, an official accompanying Blinken said: "Frankly, we're asking all of our partners to engage with Hamas, Hezbollah or Iran — with any of that trifecta — with whom they have any channels or relations or what have you, to get Hamas to stand down from its attacks, to release those hostages, and to keep Hezbollah out, and to keep Iran out of the fray."

<h2>Blinken in Israel</h2>

Blinken as per Reuters is due to meet senior Israeli officials, including the nation's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.&nbsp;

US further boosting military support to Israel will feature among the topics of discussion.

Before boarding a plane for Israel, he told reporters: "I'm going with a very simple and clear message ... that the United States has Israel's back."

A top objective for Blinken during this visit will be to deliver a message, largely directed at Iran and Iran-backed groups like Lebanon's Hezbollah, to stand down and stop an escalation of the conflict.

Also on the agenda is a visit to Jordan and other countries in the region. However, as per Reuters, it seems like a visit to West Bank is not on the cards.

A judge in the US state of Oklahoma&nbsp;is on the verge of losing her job after she was caught on camera sending text messages and scrolling social media during a murder trial.&nbsp;

The chief justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court&nbsp;recommended the removal of the new Lincoln County District Judge Traci Soderstrom for negligence of duty, following an investigation by the state's Council on Judicial Complaints, AP reported.&nbsp;

Chief Justice John Kane IV wrote, "The pattern of conduct demonstrates Respondent’s (Soderstrom’s) gross neglect of duty, gross partiality and oppression. The conduct further demonstrates Respondent’s&nbsp;lack of temperament to serve as a judge."

Soderstrom has been under scrutiny since July after she was caught sending almost 500 messages, including mocking the prosecutor, praising the defence lawyer and calling one of the key witnesses a lawyer to her bailiff during the trial of a man accused in a fatal beating of a two-year-old.&nbsp;

The video was published by the Oklahoman newspaper showing the judge texting during the jury selection, opening statements and testimony during the trial in Chandler.

She was suspended with pay pending the outcome of a hearing by the Court on the Judiciary, which will determine whether she will be removed from the bench.&nbsp;

'Judge finds it funny'

All this began when Khrisitan Tyler Martzall, the man on trial, was convicted of second-degree manslaughter in the 2018 death of Braxton Danker, son of his&nbsp;girlfriend, and was sentenced to time served.

The mother of the child and Martzall's girlfriend Judith, pleaded guilty&nbsp;to&nbsp;enabling child abuse, was sentenced to 25 years, and was a key witness who was called a "liar" by the judge.&nbsp;

As per the filing, the text reads, "State just couldn’t accept that a mom could kill their kid so they went after the next person available."

According to Kane's petition, Soderstrom's texts also included saying "the prosecutor was sweating through his coat" during questioning of potential jurors and asking "Why does he have baby hands?"

She also lauded the defence lawyer as 'awesome' and asked 'can I clap for her?' during the arguments.&nbsp;

Furthermore, the filing stated that Soderstrom replied with a laughing emoji icon to the bailiff's demeaning reference to the prosecuting attorney's genitals.

She commented a police officer was "pretty", adding "I could look at him all day."

When questioned by the Council on Judicial Complaints, Soderstrom, rather than realising the comments should never have been made, said that her texting probably could have waited and thought, "Oh, that’s funny. Move on."

Soderstrom's tenure ends in January 2027.&nbsp;

Oklahoma judge might get sacked for texting, scrolling social media during murder trial

A Canadian immigration tribunal has made a significant ruling regarding a Sikh man who "housed and fed" Khalistani militants for over a decade in India.&nbsp;

The court has allowed the man entry into Canada, based on the premise that his actions were driven "mostly out of necessity" and fear of retribution.

<h2>A safehouse for militants</h2>

Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board tribunal member Heidi Worsfold in a ruling declared that the Canadian government lacked reasonable grounds to declare Indian citizen Kamaljit Ram inadmissible to enter Canada over his alleged involvement in providing a "safe house" and "logistical support" to Khalistani militants.

The tribunal ruled that the Sikh man, who had "housed and fed" armed Khalistani militants in India over a decade, did so primarily "out of necessity" and a genuine fear of repercussions, reports the National Post newspaper.

<h2>Earlier barring overturned</h2>

Previously, the Canadian government had taken the decision to bar Ram from entering the country.&nbsp;

The decision was made after he revealed to Canada Border Services Agency officers during an interview that he had "on and off" sheltered and fed armed Sikh militants on his farm in India between 1982 and 1992.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canada-based pro-Khalistani, was killed on Canadian soil on 18 June 2023. Nijjar, a designated terrorist in India, was shot and killed in the parking lot of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia.

Following the killing, relations between India and Canada have soured significantly, with the Canadian government expelling a senior Indian diplomat. In retaliation, India too expelled a senior Canadian diplomat.

A Canadian immigration tribunal has made a significant ruling regarding a Sikh man who "housed and fed" Khalistani militants for over a decade in India. The court has allowed the man entry into Canada, based on the premise that his actions were driven "mostly out of necessity" and fear of retribution. A safehouse for militants Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board tribunal member Heidi Worsfold in a ruling declared that the Canadian government lacked reasonable grounds to declare Indian citizen Kamaljit Ram inadmissible to enter Canada over his alleged involvement in providing a "safe house" and "logistical support" to Khalistani militants. Also read | Trudeau provokes India again, mentions 'importance of upholding law' during talks with Jordan King The tribunal ruled that the Sikh man, who had "housed and fed" armed Khalistani militants in India over a decade, did so primarily "out of necessity" and a genuine fear of repercussions, reports the National Post newspaper. Earlier barring overturned Previously, the Canadian government had taken the decision to bar Ram from entering the country. The decision was made after he revealed to Canada Border Services Agency officers during an interview that he had "on and off" sheltered and fed armed Sikh militants on his farm in India between 1982 and 1992. However, Worsfold found that the government's evaluation of Ram's involvement with the armed militants during that time was overly harsh. Canada permits entry to man who 'housed and fed' Khalistani militants in India

(Trigger warning: Some readers may find details of this report disturbing. Discretion is advised)

The international war correspondent who initially broke the story of Hamas' alleged beheading of Israeli children is standing by her reporting.

Despite doubts circulating on social media, i24News reporter Nicole Zedeck strongly defended her account and said, "I wish that it wasn't true."

She had reported that on Tuesday, at a kibbutz near the Gaza border, 40 infants and young children were brutally murdered, with some decapitated.

<h2>'Apocalyptic scene'</h2>

Appearing on "The Clay Travis &amp; Buck Sexton Show," Zedeck recalled the gruesome scenes she witnessed while walking through a community near the Gaza border.

"I witnessed some of those scenes with my own eyes as we were walking through this community that may be a quarter of a mile from the Gaza border. The atrocities that were still left behind, children, cribs, baby cribs overturned on their side, splattered with blood... Horrible, horrible images," she said.

Calling the bloodshed witnessed by Israeli soldiers as an "apocalyptic scene," she said that there were no "words to describe what they've seen."

"Babies' heads cut off. That's what they encountered when they came there."

"So as horrible as it is, and I wish that it wasn't true. And I see how those images and those words are hard to comprehend because it's hard to comprehend how anyone could commit such heinous, heinous crimes. But that's exactly what happened in just one of the kibbutz communities," she added.

<h2>'Why aren’t you showing the babies?'</h2>

When a commentator's sound bite doubting her report was played, she slammed the nay-sayers and said, "You know, it's sickening, really, that people are asking, 'Where are the babies? Why aren’t you showing the babies?'".

She asked, "Is that something that anyone would want to see the first thing with their own eyes? Because after the graphic images that I saw of just children's beds covered in blood, I don't think I would be able to stomach those atrocities as well."

"I didn’t know anyone was capable of committing something like that, so that’s the only way I could report it by speaking to these soldiers, these commanders, who witnessed it first hand," said the war correspondent.

Zedeck also credited Israeli soldiers for undertaking the agonising task of transporting the children's lifeless bodies into ambulances.

<h2>Reports of 'beheaded' babies</h2>

A spokesperson for Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday confirmed reports of babies and toddlers found with their "heads decapitated," in southern Israel.

US President Joe Biden, too, claimed to have seen photos corroborating claims of decapitated bodies.

"I never really thought that I would see and have confirmed pictures of terrorists beheading children," he said. They also said that the statement was based on claims made by a spokesperson for Israel's prime minister and media reports.

California citizens can now wipe all their personal information off the internet. On Tuesday (Oct 10th), California governor Gavin Newsom signed into law, a bill that enables residents to put in a request for the deletion of all their personal data from the coffers of data brokers in the state.&nbsp;

<h2>Delete Act</h2>

The bill called Delete Act or SB 362 was originally introduced back in April 2023, by California Senator Josh Becker. This bill aims to give Californians more control over their privacy by enabling data deletion from a single page bypassing the previous tedious process.

It adds to a pre-existing right, under which California citizens can request data deletion, regardless of how the data was acquired by data brokers.&nbsp;

However, the earlier law requires individuals to file a request with each individual company.

<h2>Other bill provisions</h2>

The bill, as per The Guardian report, reinforces that all data brokers in the state must register with the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA).

It also requires the CPPA to establish an easy and free way for residents&nbsp;to request data deletion through "a single page".

<h2>Is there a penalty for non-compliance?</h2>

Data brokers that don't comply with these rules can be fined and otherwise penalised.

As per an earlier report by Digiday, data brokers that fail to register with the CPPA would be fined $200 each, additionally failure to comply with data deletion requests will attract a $200/day fine per request.

Talking to the press, Senator Josh Becker lauded the passing of the bill and said, "Data brokers possess thousands of data points on each and every one of us, and they currently sell reproductive healthcare, geolocation and purchasing data to the highest bidder. The Delete Act protects our most sensitive information."

Proponents of the bill laud the less tedious and user-friendly process. However, advertising companies argue that the bill would undermine their industry.&nbsp;

In a letter, a group of trade bodies said that "absent this data, smaller enterprises will lose a critical path to reach and attract new customers, and consumers overall will have less exposure to new products and services that may interest them."

Former Australian cricketer Dav&nbsp;Whatmore is of the view that Pakistan bowlers have been let down by their fielders in the ongoing World Cup. Quizzed about the reason why Pakistani bowlers were conceding 300+ scores routinely, despite having an enviable&nbsp;bowling lineup, WION's in-house expert pointed out the obvious.&nbsp;

Whatmore reflected on the dropped chance that allowed Sri Lankan no. 3 Kusal Mendis to hammer a stunning century that included 14 boundaries and six maximums.&nbsp;

"Kusal Mendis is batting beautifully, one of the best batters in this tournament so far. Perhaps, there are a few more such batters in other teams. But it would help if they [Pakistan] can hold those catches," said Whatmore.&nbsp;

"We saw another example of a good player being dropped and then goes on to make a big hundred. So I think they need to support their bowlers a bit more," he added.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Earlier in the tournament, during the Australia vs India match, Mitchell Marsh dropped Virat Kohli when the latter was on 12. With the game in favour of Australia, Kohli's wicket could have&nbsp;shut the doors for India. However, the dropped catch proved costly as Kohli went on to score a gutsy 85 which guided India to victory.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Pakistan's conundrum&nbsp;</h2>

On Tuesday (Oct 10), Pakistan chased a record target of 345 with relative ease. However, the victory hid the obvious problems with the bowling lineup. Since the Asia Cup, the bowlers have leaked in excess of 300 runs routinely. Once regarded as Pakistan's strong suit, bowling has turned into a weakness of sorts for the subcontinent team, making fans jittery.&nbsp;

While the batting has been firing, Pakistan team management would hope that Shaheen &amp; co. pick up the slack while fielders lend their support, going forward into the tournament.&nbsp;

The US state of Utah has sued the short video format application TikTok. It accused&nbsp;the Chinese-owned app of harming and "exploiting" young children by intentionally making them spend unhealthy amounts of time on the platform.

The suit filed on Tuesday (Oct 10th) is only the latest action challenging the popular app in the United States. Indiana and Arkansas had launched similar lawsuits against the video-sharing platform earlier.

<h2>Compulsion, exploitation and more</h2>

Utah's suit has been filed in the state court. It alleges that videos on TikTok leverage "highly powerful algorithms and manipulative design features — many of which mimic features of slot machines" and claims that as a result of these "manipulative" tactics, young consumers get hooked.

Reuters reports that in the filing, Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes said: "What these children (and their parents) do not know is that TikTok is lying to them about the safety of its app and exploiting them into checking and watching the app compulsively, no matter the terrible effects it has on their mental health, their physical development, their family, and their social life."

<h2>What action is Utah seeking?</h2>

As per Reyes, Utah's investigation into TikTok is ongoing. The Utah Attorney General, as per Reuters, also said that he will next week ask a court to compel TikTok's compliance with investigative subpoenas.

Utah, according to the report, is seeking civil penalties and an injunction that will prohibit TikTok from violating a consumer protection state law which shields them from deceptive business practices.

Responding to the suit, TikTok said that it "has industry-leading safeguards for young people, including an automatic 60-minute time limit for users under 18 and parental controls for teen accounts."

TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance, a China-based company, has more than 150 million users in the US.

The company is already facing multiple lawsuits across the US. Last year, a group of Republican lawmakers had alleged that "many children are exposed to non-stop offerings of inappropriate content that TikTok’s algorithm force-feeds to them."

In December, Indiana sued the app. The case is pending in the state court. Arkansas launched its suit in March. The case that also involves Facebook-parent Meta accuses the social media companies of "pushing addictive platforms."

The state of Montana went one step further and banned the use of the app in the state. However, TikTok is seeking to block the ban which takes effect on Jan 1st. A hearing of the lawsuit is scheduled for Thursday (Oct&nbsp;12).

Utah sues TikTok for using 'manipulative tactics' to hook young children and exploit them

By the end of this century, climate change could lead to extreme global warming and trigger health problems such as heart attacks and heat strokes in populous countries including India, China and Pakistan, a study has said.

The study published on Monday (Oct 9) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that a significant portion of the world's population will be vulnerable to "moist heat stress" with some devastating consequences on human health if the temperatures rise above 2 degrees Celsius of warming. Notably,&nbsp;till now,&nbsp;the world has&nbsp;warmed around 1.2 degrees Celsius.

<p data-analytics-observe="off" data-article-gutter="true" data-component-name="paragraph" data-editable="text" data-uri="cms.cnn.com/_components/paragraph/instances/paragraph_CDA60C30-62A5-1D52-35BB-1562094904E6@published">Matthew Huber, co-author of the study and a professor of Earth’s atmospheric and planetary sciences at Purdue University said, "Moist heat stress is a particularly challenging problem, because it affects the human body directly, and causes morbidity and mortality."&nbsp;

There is a certain threshold combination of heat and humidity that humans can bear, beyond which it causes heat-related health problems such as heat strokes and heart attacks.&nbsp;

The study projected that if the temperatures rise above 2 degrees of warming, then a projected population of 2.2 billion people in Pakistan and the Indus River Valley in India, 1 billion people in China and 800 million people in sub-Saharan Africa will experience hours of heat that will surpass human tolerance by the end of the century.

He added, "This is true despite the fact that these nations generate far fewer greenhouse gas emissions than wealthy nations. As a result, billions of poor people will suffer, and many could die. Notably, till now, the world has warmed around 1.2 degrees Celsius. Matthew Huber, co-author of the study and a professor of Earth’s atmospheric and planetary sciences at Purdue University said, "Moist heat stress is a particularly challenging problem, because it affects the human body directly, and causes morbidity and mortality." Also read | Climate change is costing us USD 16 million per hour: Study There is a certain threshold combination of heat and humidity that humans can bear, beyond which it causes heat-related health problems such as heat strokes and heart attacks. Barcelona's money problems have been well-documented over the years. The club has been under intense scrutiny for its finances and now a new report has claimed that the Catalan club owes more than $212 million in transfer fees to various clubs such as Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Leeds United. According to a report in ARA, although Barcelona have found ways to secure the transfer deals, they still owe considerable debt to the clubs. The La Liga champions are expected to shell out just under $95 million over the next 12 months but will still be left with $127 million in payout to Leeds, City, Bayern and Sevilla beyond that point. The report added that Barcelona owe $25 million to Leeds for Raphinha, $14 million to City for Ferran Torres and $11 million to Bayern for Lewandowski. They also need to find $38 million to pay for Jules Kounde's transfer from Sevilla. Also read | Lionel Messi’s remarriage with Barcelona still a possibility: Reports Despite a handful of transfers over the summer transfer window, Barcelona are still looking for a defensive midfielder and two fullbacks. Joao Cancelo and Jao Felix, are both on loan deals and their performances have given a second wing to the team but owing to their outrageous transfer fees, Barcelona is bound to enter the market next year. However, plugging the gaps might be a difficult task as La Liga last month slashed Barcelona's spending cap by $429 million for the new season, down to $286 million. Only Sevilla, Villareal and Deportovo Alaves are the other La Liga clubs, operating at a lower cap than Barcelona. The problems were compounded after reports claimed that the club was under investigation for suspected "active bribery" as part of a probe into suspected corruption spanning two decades at the refereeing committee. In March, prosecutors filed a complaint over alleged payments of more than 7.3 million euros ($7.8 million) over 17 years to firms owned by Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, who was vice-president of the RFEF's refereeing committee from 1993 to 2018. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting believes that his side cannot afford to go 0-2 down in the World Cup after starting poorly against India in the opening encounter.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting believes that his side cannot afford to go 0-2 down in the World Cup after starting poorly against India in the opening encounter. Ponting said Australia were 'way off the mark' in the contest and will have to pull their socks to get back in contention. Speaking on the latest episode of the ICC Review podcast, Ponting reflected on Australia's second match against in-form South Africa who blasted 428 against Sri Lanka last week. "Australia, to me, looked to be a fair way off the mark, to be honest, in that game against India,” Ponting said. "You can't afford to be zip-and-two (0-2) in a World Cup. We know how important it is to finish up the top of the table," he added. Despite the tough talk, Ponting maintained that Australia had a talented group of players who could make it till the end of the tournament, provided Adam Zampa fired. The wrist spinner is the only proper spinner in the squad, apart from Glenn Maxwell performing part-time duties with his off-spin. "But I've still got full faith in their squad. It is a very good squad, a very talented squad. We know there's a lot of all-rounders in that side. The other thing that I probably learned is that they're going to need Adam Zampa bowling well. It's as simple as that. David Warner and Steve Smith forged a little partnership before the former smacked one straight down the throat of Kuldeep Yadav in his follow-through. Afterwards, the Australian innings succumbed from 110/2 to 199 all out. India chased the total inside 42 overs, despite losing three quick wickets. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul forged a 150+ runs partnership and saw their team home. Australia will hope to set things right when they take on the Proteas at the Ekana Sports Stadium in Lucknow on Thursday (Oct 12). (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

<h2>Drone attack?</h2>

The KIA is currently investigating the nature of the strike that struck the camp near Laiza town, situated along the border with China.

<h2>War crime</h2>

Myanmar's shadow National Unity Government (NUG) on Tuesday labelled the ruling military's attack on a refugee camp a "war crime".

"This act of military council is a war crime and a crime against humanity," said NUG spokesperson Kyaw Zaw.

Kyaw Zaw called on the international community "to take action," and said that the attack so close to China showed that the junta did not respect its neighbour.

This tragic incident adds to a series of violent events in the region, further underscoring the ongoing conflict and insecurity in Myanmar. In October of the previous year, military air strikes targeted a concert organised by the KIA, resulting in approximately 50 fatalities and 70 injuries.

Myanmar: Dozens including children killed in deadly military strike on refugee camp

In a surprising turn of events on Wall Street, stocks managed to rebound despite initial concerns surrounding the deadly conflict between Hamas and Israel.&nbsp;

As per AFP, on Monday, stocks closed higher, bouncing back from a slump.

<h2>Resilient markets</h2>

As the world faces geopolitical uncertainties, initially, following a weekend attack by Palestinian militant group Hamas on Israel, US stocks had initially experienced a dip.&nbsp;

Even as fears of escalating tensions lingered, markets eventually shrugged off the pressure.

Oil prices, however, surged due to concerns about growing unrest in the oil-rich Middle East.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average registered a 0.6 per cent increase, reaching 33,604.65 points.&nbsp;

Similarly, the broad-based S&amp;P 500 Index climbed by 0.6 per cent to 4,335.66 points, and the Nasdaq Composite Index showed a 0.4 per cent advance, closing at 13,484.24 points.

Outside the US, businesses with ties to Israel, such as chipmakers and software providers, faced pressure as a result of the conflict.&nbsp;

<h2>Defence shares jump</h2>

Interestingly, shares of prominent defence and oil companies experienced significant gains during this tumultuous period.&nbsp;

Lockheed Martin, for instance, closed nearly 9 per cent higher, reflecting investors' focus on security-related industries. Northrop Grumman Corp rose by 11.4 per cent and Exxon Mobil picked up 3.4 per cent.

Talking to AFP, CFRA Research chief investment strategist Sam Stovall said: "Historically, military shocks on their own have tended to be short-lived."

"Even though oil prices spiked by 4.3 percent on the first trading day after the attack, the US dollar weakened, and share prices rose, implying that traders think this military shock will also likely not trigger a new bear market," he added.

This unexpected surge in defence stocks appears to be linked to concerns about geopolitical risks.&nbsp;
