Netherlands completed a famous 38-run win over South Africa to add further intrigue to the pool stage at the Cricket World Cup. Two days after Afghanistan had humbled holders England, the in-form South Africans were well beaten by the Dutch in a rain-affected game in Dharamsala that was reduced to 43 overs a side.

The Israel-Hamas conflict has had several disturbing spillovers throughout the world. One of them is the rising prejudices against Muslims and Jews. In one such incident, some students of New York University (NYU) were seen tearing down posters of Israeli children taken hostage by Hamas.&nbsp;

Another incident, an alleged hate crime, involves a student from Columbia University. The student, as per reports, attacked a Jewish classmate with a broomstick.

<h2>Video goes viral&nbsp;</h2>

A video of the NYU students tearing down posters has gone viral on social media. The students, as per Daily Mail, are yet to be named publicly. Additionally, the university hasn't confirmed whether the young people seen in the video are currently enrolled.

NYU students seen tearing down posters of young Israeli children kidnapped by Hamas. Watch!

Palestine, on Wednesday, called out Israel on its denial of involvement in the tragic Gaza hospital blast. Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian Ambassador to the UN, called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "liar" and countered his claims that Hamas was behind the attack.

The Palestinian envoy claimed that Israeli forces were behind the strike and said that they had proof, a deleted X (formerly Twitter) post made by Israel.

<h2>What proof does Palestine have?</h2>

Hitting out at the Israeli PM, Mansour said, "He is a liar."&nbsp;

The diplomat claimed that they have a copy of a now-deleted post made by Israel in which the nation allegedly admitted that they hit a Hamas base in the area.

He said that Netanyahu's "digital spokesperson tweeted that Israel did the hit thinking that there was a base for Hamas around this hospital, and then he deleted that tweet. We have a copy of that tweet."

"Now they changed the story to try to blame the Palestinians," he alleged, adding, "The Israeli spokesperson of the Army made a statement in which he said evacuate the hospitals... Their intention is to evacuate or hospitals will be hit and they are responsible for that crime and they cannot fabricate stories to deal with it."

As per news agency ANI, Mansour in his statement also demanded for immediate ceasefire.

"We as an Arab Group demand immediately a ceasefire because the continuation of the war, it means killing more Palestinians every moment."

<h2>Exchanging blames</h2>

Earlier, in a statement, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said that intelligence from several sources revealed that "Islamic Jihad terrorists" were responsible for the strike, which was an unsuccessful rocket launch.

Taking to social media platform X, he said: "An analysis of IDF operational systems indicates that a barrage of rockets was fired by terrorists in Gaza, passing in close proximity to the Al Ahli hospital in Gaza at the time it was hit."&nbsp;

In another post, he remarked that the "entire world should know: It was barbaric terrorists in Gaza that attacked the hospital in Gaza, and not the IDF."&nbsp;

On Tuesday, Tal Heinrich, a spokesperson for Netanyahu, told CNN that IDF "does not target hospitals," adding "we only target Hamas strongholds, arms depots, and terror targets."

Death is the sad truth of life. When someone close to us dies, we try to give them the best send-off. That is exactly what the people of Penrose, a small town in Colorado, United States, thought they were doing by availing the services of Return to Nature, a 'green' funeral home. However, a few weeks back an "abhorrent smell" alerted authorities to heaps of decomposing bodies.

<h2>Foul odour</h2>

Officials have discovered the decomposing remains of around 189 people from the Colorado funeral home that offered cremations and 'green' burials without the use of embalming fluids.&nbsp;

The discovery was made earlier this month, and the initial estimate was 115 bodies. However, on Tuesday, officials said that they have now identified 189 bodies.&nbsp;

As per CBS News, they also said that the number could further change depending on the identification and the investigation.

<h2>'Horrific' scene</h2>

Authorities started their investigation on October 5&nbsp;after receiving complaints of a foul order from inside the decrepit building that houses the funeral home.

Fremont sheriff Allen Cooper described what they found as "horrific".&nbsp;

Citing an order from state officials dated October 5, news agency AP reports that Jon Hallford, the owner of the funeral home, has acknowledged having a "problem" at Penrose. Hallford also claimed that he practised taxidermy at the Penrose site.

Authorities finished removing the decomposing bodies on October 11&nbsp;and are working on identifying the remains. For this, they have sought help from an FBI team that, as per AP, gets deployed to mass casualty events like aircraft crashes.

<h2>Funeral home in trouble</h2>

As per the Gazette, the funeral home's licence&nbsp;expired months before the discovery was made. Citing records from the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), it reports that the licence for Return to Nature Funeral Home Penrose location expired on Nov&nbsp;30, 2022.&nbsp;

Documentation released by DORA revealed that despite that, the funeral home continued operations.&nbsp;

Authorities reportedly were aware of the funeral home's troubles. It had missed tax payments in recent months, had got evicted from one of its properties and was also sued for unpaid bills by a crematory that ended business ties with it almost a year ago.&nbsp;

More than 120 worried families have already contacted authorities, fearing their relatives could be among the decomposing bodies. Colorado, as per the report, has some of the weakest rules for funeral homes in the US with no routine inspections or qualification requirements for funeral home operators.&nbsp;

Shocking! Authorities discover 189 decomposing bodies at Colorado funeral home

In an ordinary field in North Essex, England, a metal detectorist has made an exciting historical discovery dating back to the Middle Ages.

The detectorist found a gold medieval ring engraved with a beautiful declaration of love and a silver hooked tag. The finds, as per BBC, are subject to a coroner's inquest at Chelmsford.

<h2>Engraved love</h2>

The gold medieval ring with a love declaration in French was found near Frinton. On another occasion, the same detectorist landed upon a silver hooked tag in the field.

"Je desir vous Ceruir," reads the ring. This French term is a declaration of love and translates to "I desire to serve you".&nbsp;The language is a type of French used in England during the Middle Ages.

The gold ring was found in a cracked condition and is pretty small, with a diameter of merely 9.4 millimetres, and a width of 3.9 millimetres, reports BBC News.

Its style, as per experts, was popular between 1400 and 1500 — rings with chivalric mottos were all the rage back then. Smitten by their love, in a courtly love tradition, men would often have mottos like "I desire to serve you" or "wish to obey" engraved as promises.

They also believe it belonged to someone with an elite status, and a connection to the French.

<h2>'I desire to serve you'</h2>

The ring, though pretty small, belonged to a man, speculates Lori Rogerson, the Essex County Finds Liaison Officer for the Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service.

She said the ring is so "tiny it only fits on my little finger" and that it was probably worn on all joints of all the fingers.

"At this period rings were worn on all the joints of all the fingers so that it could have been worn on the upper joint," said Rogerson, while talking to BBC.

The metal detectorist also found a Tudor silver-gilt hooked tag that women probably used to hold up one layer of skirt from another, so both were visible.

NASA Psyche Asteroid&nbsp;Mission: The Psyche aircraft launched by NASA last week as the first mission to a metal asteroid is all set to blaze a literal blue trail. The spacecraft was launched towards an asteroid of the name.&nbsp;

This bright wake probe's remarkable propulsive system will switch within the first 100 days of the mission. Hall thruster is the mechanism which will propel the Pysche through space.&nbsp;

This thruster will glow blue as it ionizes xenon, a noble gas that will be used to move the spacecraft forward. The gas is also used in car headlights and plasma televisions. This is the first time such technology will be used and it has only been available for NASA spaceflight since 2015.&nbsp;

While planning space missions, engineers focus on efficiency which can be achieved through this technology. For this, the engineers turned to electric thrusters. These come in different variants. Scientists use ion and Hall thrusters.&nbsp;

Dan Geobel, NASA's Psyche chief engineer in a blog post said, "There are many different types of electric thrusters, almost as many as there are different makers of cars."&nbsp;

"They can probably be considered the Tesla versions of space propulsion," he added.&nbsp;

Ion thrusters use high electric voltages to make plasma and spew ions into space. NASA's Dawn mission used these ion thrusters to get to dwarf planet Ceres, but the space agency said that they're not the fastest.&nbsp;

On the other hand, the Hall thrusters use a magnetic field to swirl electrons in a circle and produce a beam of ions. They don't get good mileage but the Pysche team picked it because these thrusters allow them to make a smaller and therefore more efficient spacecraft.&nbsp;

The thrusters need power to work which they get from the sun via solar panels and something to ionize.&nbsp;

Now that the mission has been launched, the team will spend the next 100 days checking out all the spacecraft's systems to ensure they're ready for the journey.&nbsp;

If the mission is successful, then the Hall thrusters will likely make an appearance on upcoming space missions, said Steven Scott, the programme manager for the Psyche mission at the company Maxar. As per NASA experts, by August 2029, the spacecraft will begin exploring the asteroid that scientists think – because of its high metal content – may be the partial core of a planetesimal, a building block of an early planet.

The spacecraft was launched towards an asteroid of the name. This bright wake probe's remarkable propulsive system will switch within the first 100 days of the mission. Hall thruster is the mechanism which will propel the Pysche through space. This thruster will glow blue as it ionizes xenon, a noble gas that will be used to move the spacecraft forward. The gas is also used in car headlights and plasma televisions. This is the first time such technology will be used and it has only been available for NASA spaceflight since 2015. Daniel Noboa, business heir, and now Ecuador's youngest-ever president-elect has vowed to "restore peace" to the drug gang war-ravaged South American country.&nbsp;

"Tomorrow we start work for this new Ecuador, we start working to rebuild a country seriously battered by violence, by corruption and by hate," he told supporters during an address in the seaside town of Olon.

"From tomorrow Daniel Noboa starts work as your new president," added the president-elect.

A surprise qualifier for the run-off, Noboa is a banana empire heir with a significant challenge in front of him. Here's everything you need to know about Ecuador's new president-elect.

<h2>Who is Daniel Noboa?</h2>

On Sunday (October 15th) Noboa, a businessman, fulfilled a long-held family ambition and was elected the youngest president-elect in modern Ecuadoran history.

He belongs to the brand-new National Democratic Action Alliance, an alliance which incorporates parties from both the left and the right political spectrums. The party whose economic philosophy is liberalism won the third-highest number of seats in the August legislative elections.

The young, 35-year-old leader edged out socialist rival Luisa Gonzalez and won the election with about 52 per cent of the votes.

He is the son of Ecuador's richest man, banana tycoon Alvaro Noboa, who unsuccessfully attempted to become Ecuador's president but lost five times. He is married and has two children.

The president-elect rose out of obscurity and entered the limelight for wearing a bulletproof vest to a televised presidential debate. At the debate, which took place shortly after the broad daylight assassination of Noboa, he claimed to have received death threats.

He will hold the president's post for only around 17 months — from December this year until May 2025 — and will face the ballot in 2025. Under Ecuador's laws, he can run again for president for the 2025-29 term and the one after that.&nbsp;

<h2>Education, career and previous political experience</h2>

Daniel Noboa, as per AFP, has studied business administration at New York University and has a public administration degree from Harvard's Kennedy School.&nbsp;

He is a little-known politician with only a short two-year political stint to his name — a member of the National Assembly of Ecuador between 2021 and 2023.&nbsp;

Before entering politics, he established himself as a businessman, founding his own company at the age of 18 — DNA Entertainment Group, an event organising company.

He also served as the Shipping Director and commercial and logistics director of Noboa Corporation between 2010 and 2018.

<h2>Campaign promises</h2>

On Sunday, addressing his supporters, Noboa said that he intends to "give progress to a country... that has all the elements to be a global example."

As per AFP, Noboa, who identifies as "centre-left" embraces neoliberal economic thinking and has vowed to prioritise job creation through tax incentives and credit facilities to help small businesses.

He has also proposed the introduction of a jury system to judge corruption cases. Corruption, as per AFP, happens to be one of the biggest challenges faced by Ecuador.&nbsp;

To address yet another enormous challenge: drug trafficking, he has pledged to beef up security at ports and airports, proven hot spots for drug smuggling.

Noboa also wants to militarise the nation's borders and create an offshore prison on barges or ships that will be used to isolate violent inmates.

Furthermore, Noboa has said that he will balance meeting Ecuador's foreign debt obligations with the needs of the population.

<h2>Campaign strategy</h2>

Daniel Noboa, as per Reuters, made a special point to woo young voters — holding events at universities toward the end of the campaign.

This year, as per AFP estimates, 13 million Ecuadoreans between the ages of 18 and 29 were obliged to vote.&nbsp;

He also made extensive use of social media, in fact, he ran much of his campaign online.&nbsp;

At one time, thanks to viral videos of "Noboas" posted by citizens, his name even emerged as a trend on social media platforms like X and TikTok. Noboas is the term coined for thousands of human-sized cardboard cutouts of the leader which started showing up at house parties, on the beach or even riding the bus.&nbsp;

<h2>Rivals left behind</h2>

With more than 90 per cent of the votes counted, Daniel Noboa emerged as the victor winning over 52 per cent of the votes.&nbsp;

His leftist adversary Luisa Gonzalez won about 48 per cent of the votes.

However, polls as per Reuters showed the contest would be much closer; several put Noboa and Gonzalez the two leading candidates within the margin of error of each other.

Calling on the president-elect to fulfil his promises to students and the elderly, Gonzalez congratulated Noboa him on his victory, said: "Daniel Noboa, our profound congratulations, because this is democracy."

On Monday, hundreds in the United States gathered to lay to rest a six-year-old Muslim boy who amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine war became the victim of a hate crime.&nbsp;

At the funeral gathering, the boy, Wadea al-Fayoume's uncle, revealed the heartbreaking last words of the little boy: "Mom, I'm fine."

<h2>Friend turned foe</h2>

"When he (the child) was stabbed, his last words to his mom were, 'Mom, I'm fine.' You know what, he is fine. He's in a better place," said Mahmoud Yousef, Wadea al-Fayoume's uncle.

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved family, Yousef Hannon, another uncle of the victim, claimed that the suspect 71-year-old Joseph Czuba was very friendly with the little boy and his family.

<h2>Overflowing grief</h2>

In Illinois, United States, hundreds of people came together to pay their last respects to six-year-old Wadea al-Fayoume, who on Sunday was attacked in his home.

The Monday funeral saw the Mosque Foundation in the Chicago suburb of Bridgeview overflow with people, with some paying their respects on the pavement outside.

Mourners, as per BBC, came from all over the area to express their anger and grief. Among them, some voiced their concerns about other Muslim children.

Talking to BBC, a mother of three said: "I'm shocked, but I'm not surprised."

She said that schools in the locality have taken extra precautions because of the ongoing war in Israel and Gaza.

<h2>The attack and the motive</h2>

As per the police, the little boy was attacked because he was Muslim.&nbsp;

"She responded to him, 'Let's pray for peace,'" wrote the prosecutors.&nbsp;

"Czuba then attacked her with a knife," they added.

They claim that the landlord grew paranoid about the presence of the Palestinian-American family in his house.&nbsp;

The child was stabbed 26 times with a military-style knife, reports Al Jazeera. The mother too suffered a dozen stab wounds, but she is expected to survive the senseless crime.

'Mom, I'm fine': 6-year-old Muslim boy's heartbreaking last words before dying in hate crime

France international Jean-Clair Todibo on Monday (Oct 16) apologised for laughing during a minute's silence in memory of the victims of the Israel-Hamas conflict and a murdered French teacher before a Euro 2024 qualifier last week.

"I had a nervous laugh in relation to this minute of silence but in no case did I make fun of the current situation," the 23-year-old Nice defender told journalists.

Cameras caught Todibo laughing during the tribute, which took before France's 2-1 win over the Netherlands in Amsterdam last week, to the victims of the conflict between Hamas and Israel.

The minute's silence also remembered a teacher killed last week in the northern French city of Arras in what the government called an Islamist terror attack.

"I'm hurt because it taints the education that my mother gave me," he continued.&nbsp;

"Some said that I laughed during this minute of silence because I was making fun of the death of a teacher, you should know that my mother has worked in National Education for 20 years and I have enormous respect for these people.

"This could have happened to my mother. It bothers me because it reflects an image which is not mine.

"I think I'm a boy with a very good education and with respect for people."

Before Todibo's apology, the national ethics council of the French Football Federation had sent a letter to the player to ask him to explain himself, reserving the right to refer the matter to the FFF disciplinary committee.

French footballer apologises for nervous laugh during minute's silence for Israel-Hamas conflict victims

With the increasing popularity of SUVs in the UK, a study has revealed that the cars bought today have higher carbon emissions than the ones bought in 2013.&nbsp;

The study conducted by Possible, a climate campaign group, calculated that the rising sales of SUVs and the fact they tend to be notably heavier than the traditional models previously bought, means the average conventional-engined car bought in 2023 has higher carbon emissions than its 2013 equivalent.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/a-researchers-climate-pledge-cost-him-his-job-heres-how-645988">Also read |&nbsp;A researcher's climate pledge cost him his job. Here's how</a>

The study comes amid increasing concerns about the environmental, health and safety impacts of the rising popularity of SUVs in the country.&nbsp;

The data found the carbon impact of the rich people's driving habits has damaged the climate more than those of the middle class. This is because the data showed a strong correlation between income and owning a large SUV.&nbsp;

According to the stats,&nbsp;households in the top 20 per cent of the income bracket are 81 per cent more likely to own a vehicle that emits more climate-damaging gases than the rest 80 per cent. Furthermore, the data showed that the top 20 per cent group drives three times as many miles a year as those in the bottom income bracket

The car ownership data in the Lonon borough of Kensington and Chelsea found that having an SUV, such as the Land Rover Defender, is associated with living in a richer area.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/amphibians-are-vanishing-at-an-alarming-rate-scientists-warn-645511">Also read |&nbsp;Amphibians are vanishing at an alarming rate, scientists warn</a>

The study urges the need to differentiate charges for drivers based on greenhouse gas emissions rather than emissions with direct public health effects like nitrogen oxides (NOx).&nbsp;

It highlights concerns that older cars emitting more NOx are used by less wealthy individuals in urban areas, while high greenhouse emissions often result from wealthier people purchasing large SUVs.&nbsp;

Some areas like Lambeth Lambeth, in south London, charge owners of the heaviest, most high-emission vehicles, more than four times as much for an annual parking permit than for the smallest cars. A similar scheme has been adopted in Kensington and Chelsea which has a differential of up to 10 times.

SUVs are even more prevalent in some other countries, including the&nbsp;United States, India etc.&nbsp;

With the increasing popularity of SUVs in the UK, a study has revealed that the cars bought today have higher carbon emissions than the ones bought in 2013. The study conducted by Possible, a climate campaign group, calculated that the rising sales of SUVs and the fact they tend to be notably heavier than the traditional models previously bought, means the average conventional-engined car bought in 2023 has higher carbon emissions than its 2013 equivalent.

Also read | A researcher's climate pledge cost him his job. Here's how The study comes amid increasing concerns about the environmental, health and safety impacts of the rising popularity of SUVs in the country. The data found the carbon impact of the rich people's driving habits has damaged the climate more than those of the middle class. This is because the data showed a strong correlation between income and owning a large SUV. According to the stats, households in the top 20 per cent of the income bracket are 81 per cent more likely to own a vehicle that emits more climate-damaging gases than the rest 80 per cent. Furthermore, the data showed that the top 20 per cent group drives three times as many miles a year as those in the bottom income bracket The car ownership data in the Lonon borough of Kensington and Chelsea found that having an SUV, such as the Land Rover Defender, is associated with living in a richer area. Also read | Amphibians are vanishing at an alarming rate, scientists warn The study urges the need to differentiate charges for drivers based on greenhouse gas emissions rather than emissions with direct public health effects like nitrogen oxides (NOx). It highlights concerns that older cars emitting more NOx are used by less wealthy individuals in urban areas, while high greenhouse emissions often result from wealthier people purchasing large SUVs. SUVs are even more prevalent in some other countries, including the United States, India etc. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Study reveals latest SUV models emit more climate damaging gases than older ones

He said, "CM Arvind Kejriwal announced his 15-point winter action plan on seeing the report of rising pollution every winter. Delhi government is working based on that plan. For the hot spots, 13 special teams have been formed. These teams are focusing on the action plan made for the hot spots. As far as stubble burning is concerned, bio decomposers are being used to decompose the stubble."

Chief Minister Kejriwal added&nbsp;that&nbsp;heavy fines will be imposed on those responsible for dust pollution.

<h2>Threats in US rising: FBI</h2>

In a press briefing on Sunday, FBI director Christopher Wray said that since Hamas launched its attack, threats in the US have been rising.

"The threat is very much ongoing and in fact, the threat picture continues to evolve," said the FBI chief.

"Here in the US, we cannot and do not discount the possibility that Hamas or other foreign terrorist organisations could exploit the conflict to call on their supporters to conduct attacks on our own soil."

As per a CBS News report, Wray also said that in America, Jews, Muslims and their institutions, and houses of worship have been threatened, and to mitigate the threats, the bureau is "moving quickly".

Hate crime in US: Man stabs to death 6-year-old Muslim child over ongoing Israel-Hamas war

Killarney, an Irish town, has rid itself of the "plague" of disposable coffee cups. Three months ago, it became the first Irish town to ban single-use coffee mugs, and now the results are visible.

<h2>Not caring for nature will cost you</h2>

Killarney, a popular tourist town, had a ubiquitous problem: coffee cups littering the streets, overflowing bins and ruining the beauty of the picturesque national parking.&nbsp;

Every year, the town would go through millions of cups — about 23,000 a week — which added up to 18.5 tonnes of waste.

Now, people are required to carry their own reusable cups with them, and those who don't, have to cough up a €2 (around $2.11) deposit for a reusable cup from the coffee shop. This deposit is returned once the customer gives back the cup they "borrowed".

<h2>Is the move helping?</h2>

Yes. As per the Guardian, the result is pretty evident. Streets and forest trails rarely have the pesky disposable cups littering them.

Talking to the publication, Michael Gleeson, chair of 'Killarney Looking Good,' a group that promotes civic improvements, said: "This was a wonderful and necessary initiative. The amount of cups strewn around is considerably reduced."

As per Gleeson, these cups were a "plague on the town and countryside."

Not only that, the move is also beneficial to restaurants and cafés, which save up to 20 to 30 cents a cup.&nbsp;

<h2>A source of inspiration</h2>

Killarney's success has become a source of inspiration for other Kerry towns, including Tralee and Dingle, which are also considering emulating similar experiments.

Gleeson expressed his hope that it will soon spread across Ireland and beyond, and said: "Our great challenge is to make our world more beautiful."

Similar initiatives have been undertaken by other towns across the globe. However, their numbers are low, because even the modest goal of eliminating single-use coffee cups isn't easy.

Pakistan's no. 4 batter Muhammad Rizwan had a lucky reprieve in the big-ticket encounter against India after the Decision Review System (DRS) came to his rescue. The reversal, however, ignited memories of Australia's Steve Smith being given out in one of the other World Cup matches when the ball seemingly looked like missing the stumps. The incident transpired in the 14th over when Ravindra Jadeja came to bowl after Hardik Pandya sent Imam ul Haq back to the pavilion in the previous over. Relatively fresh at the crease, Mohammad Rizwan was bamboozled on the first ball as Jadeja extracted vicious turn off the Ahmedabad pitch. While the first ball turned away from Rizwan, Jadeja darted the next one straight on middle and leg. The Pakistani batter played down the wrong line and got trapped on the pads as the umpire raised the finger. Adjudged out, Rizwan straightaway opted to take DRS. To the naked eye, it looked like the ball was kissing the top of leg, especially if one had seen the dismissal of Smith. However, DRS returned two reds and one green, meaning the wickets were missing, which left the Indian fields puzzled, especially Jadeja. Soon after the decision, netizens shared their frustration with the inconsistencies surrounding the DRS. "Rizwan’s LBW looked much closer than Steve Smith’s. But according to technology that was out and this isn’t. Well, we have to believe technology," said one user. A second added: "Jadeja's delivery to Rizwan was carbon copy of Smith's in regards to the lbw..Jadeja's delivery missed the leg stump and Smith's was hitting leg stump that too not umpire's call..ridiculous. Smith was robbed due to a DRS glitch." Opportunity missed for India? India won the toss and elected to bowl first on a pitch that appears to be excessively flat given the first 15 overs of play. India's strike bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj could not extract any swing or seam initially with the latter getting plundered for plenty of runs. Former Indian cricketer Akash Chopra in his assessment said India had missed an opportunity to 'out-bat' Pakistan by fielding first.
