In Israel's Ofakim, a woman reportedly distracted the Hamas for 15 hours, before being rescued. The woman has been identified by Israel's Channel 12 News as Rachel Adari.

Here's what happened:

We will die together

Talking to the Israeli News channel, Rachel recalled that five terrorists armed to the teeth with guns and other weapons entered the house where she and her husband were present.

"I said to my husband, if we will die, we will die together," Rachel Adari told the outlet.

The couple's son, a police officer, was on the outside, helping the YAMAM counterterrorism force plan a rescue. Aware of the fact, Rachel decided to buy some time.

"I made them coffee and gave them cookies. They started singing Lior Narkis (Israeli singer's) songs to me. I distracted them. I knew my son was helping the YAMAM and that they would come rescue me."

The next few hours were spent waiting, hoping to be rescued.

At around midnight, the couple saw the IDF approaching.

PAK vs SL World Cup 2023: Pakistan is all set to lock horns with Sri Lanka at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on October 10. The win by Babar Azam's led team wasn't the most convincing one for the team but they certainly fancied their chances against Sri Lanka. Pakistan arrived in India after an Asia Cup 2023 campaign.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka was hammered by South Africa in their opening fixture as they were beaten by a massive margin of 102 runs. The trio of Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram unleashed their wrath on the depleted bowling attack of Sri Lanka and registered the highest team total runs in World Cup history of 428/5.

Thus, the upcoming fixture becomes extremely crucial for Sri Lanka who will be eager to finally end their losing streak and register their first win of the cricket tournament. On the other hand, Pakistan will look to continue their dominance and extend their winning streak.

In the coming time, all solar eclipses will appear as 'rings of fire.' According to a report by Space.com, there will be a time when the phenomenon of a total eclipse of the sun will become impossible because the moon seen from the Earth will be too small in apparent angular size to cover the disk of the sun completely.

A similar solar eclipse is expected to rise this coming weekend (Saturday, Oct 14), when billions of people will witness the annular eclipse in which a ring of sunlight is vowed around the moon's image at the midpoint in the spectacle. The eclipse will only be partially visible in the United States. Cities that will witness this "ring of fire" effect include Eugene, Winnemucca, NV, Albuquerque, San Antonio and Corpus Christi.

The sky will not get darker and the sun will not be completely hidden, because the moon will be 4.5 days past apogee, the farthest from Earth. This new moon eclipse will be 246,707 km away. As a result, the tip of the moon's dark umbral shadow cone fails to make contact with the Earth by nearly 12,000 miles. So, the moon will appear too small to cover the sun.

Why is this happening?

The moon moves around the Earth in an elliptical orbit. It can reach its absolute closest range to Earth within 356,371 km, while its farthest from the Earth is 406,702km. The mean distance between Earth and the moon is 384,748 km.

However, for a total eclipse to occur, the dark shadow cone of the moon must make contact with the Earth's surface. This means that the tip of the shadow cone on average needs to be about 130km in width. Anywhere within this width, a total eclipse will occur, where the dark side of the moon will cover the disk of the sun.

But, the cone of the moon's shadow on average is 378,000 km in length, which is less than the moon's mean distance.

This is why a new moon passes directly between Earth and the sun, which is greater than 378,000 km away; thus umbral shadow fails to make contact with Earth resulting in this phenomenon.

Japan issued a tsunami advisory for some coastal regions early on Monday. The advisory, as per reports, was issued after a series of shallow earthquakes in the Izu islands in the Pacific Ocean. However, later the warning was lifted.

A Reuters report citing Japan's national broadcaster NHK said that the tsunami had already arrived in some island areas, where waves as high as 60 centimetres (24 inches) were reported.

The advisory was issued after an earthquake near Torishima Island at 5:25 am JST on Monday (8:25 pm GMT, Sunday), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

As per figures by the United States Geological Survey, the quake measured 4.9 on the Richter scale.

The US agency also reported a series of shallow quakes in the Izu islands. The strongest one, a 5.4 magnitude tremor, was recorded at 5:17 am (2117 GMT Sunday) around 551 kilometres south of Shimoda.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, 280 kilometres (170 miles) south of Tokyo, Hachijojima island was hit by tsunami waves of height 60 centimetres (24 inches). Smaller tsunami waves of 40cm and 20 cm were recorded in the western Kochi prefecture and southern Miyazaki prefecture, respectively.

Seismologists from JMA, as per an AFP report, said there were no immediate reports of damage from the minor waves generated.

However, despite that, Tateyama city of Chiba, located near Tokyo, had urged residents in coastal areas to evacuate after the advisory.

Danger!

During a press conference, JMA official Toshihiro Shimoyama warned that "it is dangerous in the sea and near the coast".

Previously, just last week, following a magnitude 6.5 quake, Japan had observed a one-metre tsunami near the Izu islands.

Days after announcing its bid for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, Saudi Arabia on Monday (Oct 9) took the official step by submitting a letter of intent to host the event to FIFA - the world soccer governing body.

According to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), ever since the kingdom showed its intention to bid for the tournament, "over 70 FIFA member associations from across different continents" had pledged their support.

"Last week we announced our ambitions to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, and this official submission continues our journey to make the dreams of our people a reality," Yasser Al Misehal, president of the SAFF said in a statement.

"We are extremely committed to presenting the most competitive bid possible that will also help unite the world through football," he added.

Last week, reports also claimed that the kingdom hosting the quadrennial event was basically a 'done deal'.

"A Saudi World Cup in 2034 isn't just likely, it's basically a done deal. Money has talked again, and the event will be worth billions in new cash for FIFA," a source close to the matter told DailyMail.

What did FIFA announce?

On Thursday (Oct 5), FIFA announced it had reached an agreement to host the 2030 World Cup across three continents viz, South America, Africa and Europe.

While Morocco, Portugal and Spain will be the joint hosts for the marquee event, games will also be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. As a result, all six nations will automatically qualify for the World Cup.

"In 2030, the FIFA World Cup will unite three continents and six countries, inviting the entire world to join in the celebration of the beautiful game, the Centenary and the FIFA World Cup itself," FIFA said in a statement.

FIFA said the World Cup matches were being held in South America as part of the centenary celebration of the first World Cup held in Uruguay.

Additionally, FIFA said it was fast-tracking the bidding process for the 2034 tournament, adding that the World Cup will be staged in a host country (or countries) represented by the Asian or Oceania confederations.

The 2034 bidding process began earlier this month and countries only have until October 31 to confirm their interest in submitting a formal bid proposal. Apart from the kingdom, Australia, perhaps alongside Indonesia is expected to throw its hat into the ring.

If Saudi Arabia gets the nod to host the event, the FIFA World Cup will return to Asia 12 years after Qatar hosted the 2022 World Cup.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Sunday expressed hope that the referendum to recognise the nation's indigenous people in its constitution would succeed.

Previous surveys found that the population was split about the referendum, with the larger portion of people against it.

Australian constitution and the indigenous people

The Australian constitution dates back to 1901. However, the 122-year-old constitution fails to make mention of Indigenous Australians that make up around 3.8 per cent of the nation's population.

As per Reuters, the marginalised community faces discrimination, short life expectancy, lower education outcomes and high incarceration rates.

If the referendum titled "Voice to Parliament" is approved, it would constitutionally enshrine the Australian Indigenous people. It would also give way to the setting up of an advisory body that would enable the community to add their input on policies that affect them.

For and against

As per Reuters, PM Albanese's centre-left Labor government backs the referendum. However, the opposition Liberal-National conservatives are gearing for a "No" vote on October 14.

An opinion poll from last week found that nationally, only 38 per cent were in favour.

However, Albanese says he is hopeful. Talking to ABC, he said "I'm optimistic."

"Whether it be Shepperton or Sydney or Brisbane, Melbourne, the places I've been, Hobart, Adelaide in the last week, have been extremely positive."

However, even as most indigenous people favour the change, some say it is a distraction from achieving practical and positive outcomes. They also claim that the referendum would not fully resolve the issues plaguing them.

The political opposition, on the other hand, has labelled the measure divisive, and says it would be ineffective and would slow government decision-making.

AFP reports that Noel Pearson, an Indigenous lawyer and land rights activist, one of the architects of the "Voice" proposal, said that Australians now face a "moral choice".

He said that "One choice will bring us pride and hope and belief in one another and the other will, I think, turn us backwards and bring shame to the country," he told Australian broadcaster ABC.

"'Yes' is a moral choice and 'no' would be a travesty for the country, and we will possibly never live it down."

A Chinese-born independent blogger has alleged that China had a hand in the killing of separatist leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Jennifer Zeng, as per reports, claims that agents of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) were involved in the Canada killing and that China's "purpose was to frame India creating discord between India and the West".

China's ignition plan

Zeng as per ANI, also alleged that the killing was part of the CCP's sinister "Ignition Plan" to disrupt the world. This strategy reportedly is in line with Chinese Premier Xi Jinping's military strategy regarding Taiwan.

Dubbing the killing an assassination, the US-based journalist, rights activist, in a video posted on social media platform X, said, "Today shocking revelations about the 'assassination' of Sikh religious leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in Canada have emerged from within the CCP. It is alleged that the 'assassination' was carried out by CCP agents."

Zeng attributed the information to the Chinese writer and YouTuber Lao Deng, who she said lives in Canada now.

"Lao stated that in early June this year, as part of their disruption initiative 'Ignition Plan', the CCP Ministry of State Security sent a high-ranking official to Seattle, USA. A secret meeting was held there... The objective was to sabotage relations between India and the West," she claimed on X.

"The agents were tasked with assassinating Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Sikh leader in Canada. Following the meeting, the CCP agents meticulously executed the killing plan," she added.

As per Zeng, on June 18, CCP agents "armed with silenced guns tracked Nijjar."

She alleged that once "the deed was done," the assassins "destroyed the dash camera in Nijjar's car to erase any evidence. After the crime, the agents fled, they burned their weapons and disguises to destroy all traces. The next day, they left Canada in airplanes."
