Donald Trump allegedly shared classified information about US nuclear submarines with an Australian businessman&nbsp;just three months after he left the office, reported US media said Thursday.

During a meeting at his Florida private members' club Mar-a-Lago, the "excited" former US president disclosed the sensitive information to a businessman, identified by the New York Times&nbsp;as billionaire Anthony Pratt.

Pratt, who heads one of the world's largest packaging companies, then supposedly shared the sensitive details with "scores of others, including more than a dozen foreign officials, several of his own employees, and a handful of journalists."

Back in April 2021, Pratt looking to strike up a conversation with Trump reportedly brought up the American submarine fleet. The two, as per an ABC News report, previously had a conversation on the same topic.

He is also on trial for wildly and fraudulently inflating the value of his assets to get better terms from banks and insurance companies.

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to embark on a significant diplomatic mission next week, travelling to Italy and France to bolster India's strategic partnerships with these nations. A number of pacts are expected to be signed during the visit.

The visit to Italy is especially significant, as this year, both countries elevated their ties to a strategic partnership level. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's two visits to Delhi this year further underlined the strengthening of relations. In March, Meloni paid a bilateral visit, and in September, she attended the G20 summit. During her March visit, both nations agreed to enhance their cooperation in the field of defence. It's noteworthy that in 2021, India lifted the ban on the Italian defence company Leonardo SpA (formerly known as Finmeccanica) and its subsidiary AgustaWestland, which had faced allegations of paying bribes to secure a $48 million contract for the supply of 12 helicopters to India.

France, a well-established defence partner of India, has been instrumental in providing timely delivery of the 36 Rafale fighter jets ordered by India. The relationship between India and France in the defence sector has grown stronger, with both countries agreeing to jointly develop a combat aircraft engine during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Paris earlier this year. This collaboration extends to other areas, such as the Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) programme, with India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and France's Safran Helicopter Engine signing the agreement.

One of the key elements of this defence-industrial partnership between the two countries has been the transfer of technology. An example of this commitment is the contract between Safran Helicopter Engine and HAL for the transfer of technology related to the Shakti Engine, underscoring France's dedication to supporting technology transfer and the "Make in India" initiative.

Furthermore, both India and France have agreed to explore additional projects aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the Indian submarine fleet. Under the 2006 P-75 Scorpene Project, a significant partnership was formed to build six submarines with technology transfer at the Mazagaon Docks Ltd. The commissioning of the first submarine, INS Kalvari, in October 2017 marked a milestone in this collaboration.

As Rajnath Singh embarks on his diplomatic mission to Italy and France, the focus remains on further strengthening defence ties, fostering technology transfer, and enhancing cooperation in various facets of defence manufacturing. Both countries also share a deep historical connection, rooted in the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers during the tumultuous years of the World Wars. Monuments and memorials stand as enduring tributes to the valour and sacrifice of these Indian soldiers, serving as poignant reminders of their contributions in Italy's Cassino and France's Neuve-Chapelle.

Sikkim floods: Dalai Lama expresses grief following devastation caused by flash floods

Carrying on the legacy of the previous government of Donald Trump, the Biden administration on Thursday (Oct 5) 'quietly' announced plans to make additions to the border walls with Mexico.

This wall, a signature policy of Trump, has long been a contentious topic of discussion in Washington politics. WION explains everything you need to know about the US wall with Mexico.

<h2>"High illegal entry"</h2>

On Thursday, US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in a notice in the US Federal Register said that there was "an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries."&nbsp;

The new section of the Mexico wall, as per AFP, will be built in the Rio Grande Valley Sector of the US-Mexico border, which is a "high illegal entry" area, said Mayorkas. The Rio Grande Valley Sector, as per the US Homeland Security Secretary, has been the location of more than 245,000 illegal entrants this fiscal year.

<h2>Biden's stand on the wall</h2>

The day he took office in January 2021, Biden announced, "no more American taxpayer dollars be diverted to construct a border wall".

He also said there would be a review of all the resources that had already been committed.

He had proclaimed: "Building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border is not a serious policy solution."

After 'quietly' announcing the plans for the new addition to the pre-existing wall,&nbsp;Mayorkas said there was "no new Administration policy with respect to border walls. From day one, this Administration has made clear that a border wall is not the answer."

He added that the "additional physical barriers" will be funded for using an appropriation made by Congress for the purpose of this wall back in 2019 when Trump was still in office.

"We have repeatedly asked Congress to rescind this money, but it has not done so, and we are compelled to follow the law," he said.

For the move to go through and the border wall to be extended, some two dozen federal laws such as the Clean Air Act and Endangered Species Act would need to be waived.

Back in May of this year, when the Title 42 law expired, the Biden administration also introduced tough new rule that requires migrants to make an appointment on a government-run smartphone app before approaching a legal port of entry.

Those going against the rule face a tougher bar for asylum if they cross the border illegally.

<h2>Trump claims victory</h2>

The Mexico border wall was former president Trump's signature policy. His first political campaign for president was known for its rally chant, "Build That Wall."

On Thursday, after the Biden administration's plans were announced, Trump was quick to claim victory and demand an apology.

Taking to his social media platform Truth Social, he said: "As I have stated often, over thousands of years, there are only two things that have consistently worked, wheels and walls!"&nbsp;

He also said that the Biden administration showed "I was right when I built 560 miles... of brand new, beautiful border wall."

"Will Joe Biden apologise to me and America for taking so long to get moving, and allowing our country to be flooded with 15 million illegals immigrants, from places unknown," he asked.

<h2>Illegal migrants: A burning issue in US</h2>

Illegal immigration has become a major political issue for Biden. Opposition Republicans have repeatedly accused the president of lax border policies.

Republican governors of states near the border say Biden is not doing enough to stop the crossings, and have even transported some arriving migrants to Democrat-controlled cities such as New York and Chicago.

This has now led to some Democratic leaders voicing criticism against Biden.

On Thursday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams began a trip to Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador, where he will tell would-be migrants that his city cannot accommodate them and that local shelter systems are overwhelmed, reported Reuters.

As per the Washington-based Migration Policy Institute, around 11 million immigrants have entered the US without legal documentation.

These include hundreds and thousands of Venezuelans fleeing economic and political turmoil at home.

To enter the US, they trek through a treacherous jungle region between Colombia and Panama known as the Darien Gap.

This high number of migrants has strained US cities at the border and further north, reports Reuters.

As per the US Department of Justice, there are around two million claims by illegal immigrants looking to extend their stay in the US pending in the immigration court.

Donald Trump may be the next speaker of the US House of Representatives if a Texas Republican gets his way.&nbsp;

This comes after, the Republican Party recently succeeded in its unprecedented removal of one of its own, Kevin McCarthy from the post.

<h2>Trump for speaker</h2>

Calling Trump the "greatest president" of his lifetime, Republican Troy Nehls, as per Guardian, announced that he will be nominating the ex-president for speaker of the US House of Representatives.

"This week, when the US House of Representatives reconvenes, my first order of business will be to nominate Donald J Trump for speaker of the US House of Representatives," he said.

Reportedly, previously too, Trump's name has been suggested for the esteemed post. This includes during the 15-vote marathon that saw McCarthy assume the post in January.

As per Guardian, another congressman, Greg Steube of Florida, said that he would back Trump's nomination for speaker.

<h2>Speaker or President?</h2>

Fox News host Sean Hannity, on Tuesday, disclosed that "some House Republicans" had "been in contact with and have started an effort to draft" Trump as the US House of Representatives speaker.

Hannity, who has long been close to Trump, also said that the ex-president wasn't interested in the post. Nevertheless, he added that Trump, even as he ran for President, "might be open to helping the Republican Party, at least in the short term, if necessary."

However, as per House Republican rules, this may not be possible. The rules state that "A member of the Republican leadership shall step aside if indicted for a felony for which a sentence of two or more years' imprisonment may be imposed."

Donald Trump is currently the clear frontrunner for the Republican Party in the 2024 US Presidential elections. However, the leader is haunted by a slew of 91 criminal charges: these include election subversion, retention of classified information and hush-money payments. If convicted in all, he faces 712 years and six months in jail, reports the New York Post. He is also involved in civil suits, including a fraud trial and a defamation suit in New York.

UK PM Rishi Sunak defends plan to create 'smoke-free' younger generations

It was during the&nbsp;evening hours when&nbsp;Boubacar and his flatmate Odion Eboigbe were cooking dinner in their kitchen that they heard a sudden, thundering crash beside the apartment. They thought it was an earthquake, so the two ignored the noise until they heard one man screaming: 'A bus has fallen."

The two ran to the spot and saw a bus on fire. The 27-year-old Boubacar told BBC that&nbsp;he heard a woman crying for help to save her baby. He said, "I managed to pull her through the window and then pulled out her son, who was badly burnt but still alive."

The incident occurred on Tuesday night when a bus carrying tourists from around the world, including Ukraine, Germany, Romania and Portugal was returning to a nearby campsite after a day in Venice smashed through the barrier and plunged several metres towards the railway track and burst into flames.&nbsp;

According to reports, 21 people have been reported dead while some 15 people are injured&nbsp;and are in intensive care. The injured include adults and children.&nbsp;

<h3>'I wasn't scared, I didn't think of my own safety'</h3>

Describing the scenario, Boubacar explained how he grabbed the extinguisher from the bus to help quell the flames, but nothing helped, it wasn't enough.&nbsp;

He added&nbsp;that he pulled others to safety, a woman, a man and a child. Meanwhile, Odion said he was helping his friend pull&nbsp;others through the wreckage of the mangled vehicle. "We were able to save many but unfortunately others died."

They added that once the emergency workers arrived, they helped the injured. The two haven't slept since the crash.&nbsp;

"If saving people makes you a hero, then maybe. But when somebody needs help because they're dying, you can't just walk away," said Boubacar.

The authorities claimed that the fire was so intense that they'd need DNA samples to identify the victims. The families of the deceased have started arriving in Venice. The officials claimed that there was no sign of braking by the bus, however, they said that the driver had a sudden medical problem that led him to lose control of the bus.&nbsp;

<h3>Road maintenance is poor</h3>

The head of an association for road accident victims, Domenico Musicco called the incident "a tragedy foretold." He told the news agency AFP that Italian road maintenance is poor and too little is invested in road safety. "It is estimated that 30 per cent&nbsp;of accidents are down to that."

Morning brief: Cloudburst in India's Sikkim, Martian dust devil, and more

Fifty-five Chinese sailors have reportedly died after their nuclear submarine was ensnared in a trap intended to trap British, US and allies' sub-surface vessels.

As per a Daily Mail report, the incident happened in the Yellow Sea. In spite of the catastrophic danger, China refused to ask for international help, alleges the report.

<h2>Poisoned under the water</h2>

Citing a 'secret UK report,' the UK-based publication said that the sailors died after the submarine's oxygen system failed, poisoning the crew.

As per the report, which is based on defence intelligence, the dead include the captain of the Chinese PLA Navy Submarine '093-417', along with other cadets and officers.

UK Intelligence "reports that on the 21st of August, there was an onboard accident whilst carrying out a mission in the Yellow Sea."

It further states that the "incident happened at 08:12 local" and resulted in the death of "55 crew members: 22 officers, 7 officer cadets, 9 petty officers, 17 sailors. Dead include the captain, Colonel Xue Yong-Peng."

"Our understanding is death caused by hypoxia due to a system fault on the submarine. The submarine hit a chain and anchor obstacle used by the Chinese Navy to trap US and allied submarines."

"This resulted in systems failures that took six hours to repair and surface the vessel. The onboard oxygen system poisoned the crew after a catastrophic failure," it adds.

<h2>China denies incident</h2>

Beijing, as per Daily Mail, has denied that such an incident took place. The nation has dismissed speculation as "completely false."&nbsp;Taiwan has also refuted internet reports.

However, the highly classified UK report insists that it happened.

Talking to the Daily Mail, a British submariner speculated: "It is plausible that this occurred and I doubt the Chinese would have asked for international support for obvious reasons."

"If they were trapped on the net system and the submarine's batteries were running flat, then eventually the air purifiers and air treatment systems could have failed."

The officer further stated that the failure of the battery meant the vessel would have reverted to secondary systems, which "subsequently and plausibly failed to maintain the air, which led to asphyxia or poisoning."

Fifty-five Chinese sailors have reportedly died after their nuclear submarine was ensnared in a trap intended to trap British, US and allies' sub-surface vessels.

Poisoned under the water Citing a 'secret UK report,' the UK-based publication said that the sailors died after the submarine's oxygen system failed, poisoning the crew. As per the report, which is based on defence intelligence, the dead include the captain of the Chinese PLA Navy Submarine '093-417', along with other cadets and officers. UK Intelligence "reports that on the 21st of August, there was an onboard accident whilst carrying out a mission in the Yellow Sea." Also read | Italy: At least 21 dead after bus falls from bridge in Venice It further states that the "incident happened at 08:12 local" and resulted in the death of "55 crew members: 22 officers, 7 officer cadets, 9 petty officers, 17 sailors. Dead include the captain, Colonel Xue Yong-Peng." "Our understanding is death caused by hypoxia due to a system fault on the submarine. The submarine hit a chain and anchor obstacle used by the Chinese Navy to trap US and allied submarines." "This resulted in systems failures that took six hours to repair and surface the vessel. The onboard oxygen system poisoned the crew after a catastrophic failure," it adds. China denies incident Beijing, as per Daily Mail, has denied that such an incident took place. The nation has dismissed speculation as "completely false." Taiwan has also refuted internet reports. However, the highly classified UK report insists that it happened. Talking to the Daily Mail, a British submariner speculated: "It is plausible that this occurred and I doubt the Chinese would have asked for international support for obvious reasons." Also read | US sanctions China-based drug network linked to deadly fentanyl crisis "If they were trapped on the net system and the submarine's batteries were running flat, then eventually the air purifiers and air treatment systems could have failed." The officer further stated that the failure of the battery meant the vessel would have reverted to secondary systems, which "subsequently and plausibly failed to maintain the air, which led to asphyxia or poisoning." 55 Chinese sailors die of poisoning, asphyxiation in nuclear submarine accident: Report

South Korean roller skater Jung Cheol-won endured an agonising heartbreak after he celebrated a tad too early before crossing the finish&nbsp;line. Leading the 3,000-metre relay race at the Hangzhou Asian Games in China on Monday (October 2), Jung eased up and raised his arms in the home stretch of the race, only to be pipped by Taiwan's&nbsp;Huang Yu-Lin and his outstretched leg on the line.

The 27-year-old South Korean was poised to finish the race in the first place but his momentary lapse in concentration not only caused his team to lose out on&nbsp;the gold medal but also meant that they would now have to mandatorily enrol in the country's&nbsp;military service.&nbsp;

“I made a rather big mistake,” Jung was quoted as saying by Reuters. “I didn’t come at full speed to the finish line. I let my guard down too early. I am very sorry.”

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak&nbsp;has&nbsp;announced the scrapping of the northern leg of the HS2 train line — from West Midlands to Manchester.

<h2>Sunak's speech</h2>

"I'm ending this long-running saga. I am cancelling the rest of the HS2 project. And in its place we will reinvest every single penny - 36 billion pounds - in hundreds of new transport projects in the north and the midlands, across the country," said Sunak

Better value for money and a shorter project delivery time will reportedly be the reasons he will state for this move.&nbsp;

While the northern leg will be scrapped, work has started on the London to Birmingham leg of the HS2.

Talking to BBC earlier, Defence Minister Grant Shapps had hinted the scrapping. He said: "We have to wait for his actual speech to hear exact confirmation."&nbsp;

Sunak's Conservative Party is badly lagging the opposition Labour Party in polls. An election is expected next year in UK.

<h2>Anger over scrapping</h2>

Prior to announcement, the possibility of scrapping of the HS2 train&nbsp;triggered a wave of anger among local leaders and businesses.&nbsp;Sunak's decision has not gone down well with his party colleagues and with members of the Opposition and it has caused anger.

Andy Burnham, the labour mayor of Greater Durham, has labelled the move disrespectful of "people across the whole of the North."

"It just proves there are so many people in politics - many in the Tory party - that think they can treat the north of England differently to the way they treat other parts of the country," he told BBC.

Andy Street, the Conservative West Midlands mayor, called a press conference on Monday (Oct 5th) where he "warned" Sunak that getting rid of the HS2 line was equivalent to "cancelling the future".

Thirty businesses, including football club Manchester United, had&nbsp;written to Sunak, urging him to commit to the HS2 line, and&nbsp;dodge "economic self-sabotage".

The announcement put a full stop&nbsp;to&nbsp;weeks of speculation over the future of the HS2 line. The line in question was supposed to help cut down travel time, create more space on the rail network and boost jobs outside London. However, the latest estimates show that the cost to deliver the project may come to £71 billion ($85.8 billion). This is a significant increase from the 2019 prices, which failed to account for the spike in material and labour costs.&nbsp;

The European Union will assess whether semiconductor, artificial intelligence and quantum technologies and biotechnology pose a risk to the bloc's economic security, which could lead to curbs on exports or investments in third countries such as China.

The European Commission said on Tuesday it had established a list of four technologies, as well a further six to look into later, as part of the European Economic Security Strategy it unveiled in June.

The EU executive said then that exporting or sharing such technologies could constitute a risk if put to military use or used in human rights abuses by "countries of concern".

The Commission stresses that it must first carry out a risk assessment with the EU's 27 members and consulting companies before determining any measures. In some cases, the response could be to drive investment or seek alliances with partners to reduce dependencies.

The EU executive says its assessment, to be completed by the end of the year, will not focus on any third countries. The economic security paper does not name China, but talks of partnering with like-minded countries and de-risking, which form part of its policy of reducing reliance on China.

"The risk assessment will be country agnostic, but we will take into account geopolitical factors to determine how severe those risks are," an EU official said.

The four technologies were chosen because they are considered highly likely to pose the most immediate risks.

In advanced semiconductor technologies, areas of focus include microelectronics and chip-making equipment, in AI data analytics and object recognition, and for quantum cryptography, communications and sensing.

In biotechnology, the assessment will look into genetic modifications and new genomic techniques.

The Commission could propose risk assessments of other technologies early in 2024. The EU action mirrors similar exercises by the U.S., Japan, Britain and Australia.

The EU has previously carried out an assessment of the security of its 5G networks, which has led some EU countries to restrict use of equipment made by China's Huawei and ZTE.
