Director Sam Levinson's stunning film 'Malcolm & Marie' pits two of Hollywood's most talked-about actors against each other in a story that delves deeper into complexities of a relationship. The film has only two actors- John David Washington and Zendaya, is set in a single night and is in black and white- yet it is one of the most riveting films of the season.

Filmmaker Malcolm (Washington) and his girlfriend Marie (Zendaya) are back to their sprawling home after attending a hugely successful premiere of Malcolm's latest film. Malcolm is in the mood to celebrate and spend the night talking only about himself and his work. Marie on the other hand doesn't share her boyfriend's emotions.

What starts off as a conversation around the premiere and how everyone celebrated Malcolm, soon becomes a conversation about the conflicts their relationship has had since the beginning.

Marie has played the supportive partner for long and suppressed her anger, grief and doubts about the relationship for long. On that night, as Malcolm casually forgets to thank her at the premiere night, old issues come tumbling out.

Levinson's detailed screenplay is majorly accentuated by Washington and Zendaya's effortless portrayal of two extremely complicated human beings. Washington plays the narcissist, needy Malcolm to the hilt who doesn't understand where he is going wrong. He is equal parts ignorant and equal parts manipulative, who tries to tap on his girlfriend's vulnerabilities. There is not a single false note in Washington's performance.

Zendaya, who recently created history by becoming the youngest ever actor to win an Emmy, is stunning as the self-assured, confident Marie. The actress looks stunning in every frame and makes Marie a character that is relatable, someone you end up rooting for through the course of 1 hr 45 minutes of the film. As Marie, Zendaya exudes confidence and vulnerability with absolute ease. Marie has had a troubled past but she is proud of coming out of it. Her anger for Malcolm stems out of the lack of acknowledgement she has got in her life from him. Zendaya owns every frame she is in-which is almost the entire film.

When the story spans over a single night and revolves around a couple in their home, the scope of cinematography becomes limited. But Marcell Rév's camera speaks volumes, provides the pregnant pauses in the stunning house and Malcolm and Marie restrict themselves to separate spaces to cool off in between fights. Shot in black and white, each frame of 'Malcom & Marie' is visually stunning. Rév's frames are linear, very structured and enhance the narrative to a great extent.

The film slips after the one hour mark and the conversations between the two becoming a bit repetitive. But it picks up around half an hour before the film is to end. When the story is spanning over a few hours and has only two characters talking to each other, it is a difficult watch. The movements are restricted, the conversations demand your attention but Levinson manages to keep the viewer engaged mostly. It helps to have great actors Zendaya and Washington playing out the characters on screen.

'Malcolm & Marie' review: Zendaya, John David Washington feature in a stunning commentary on love and relationship

In Indian cinema, ambitious mothers are problematic. Or so the filmmakers perceive them to be. A mother, who wants to have a thriving career will always falter at home, have a difficult relationship with her children and may also have loose morals. The child will always have a resentment growing up, seeing the mother busy at her work- unable to devote time. Renuka Shahane's directorial debut 'Tribhanga' is set on similar lines with the resentment and anger passing down to two generations.

A story of three generations in a family, 'Tribhanga' has at the core film actress Anuradha (Kajol) and her troubled relationship with her mother, celebrated author Nayantara Apte (Tanvi Azmi). As Nayan suffers a brain stroke and slips into a coma, her family- daughter Anu, son Robindro (Vaibhav Tatwawaadi), granddaughter Masha (Mithila Palkar) rush to her side. The dysfunctional family initially resent the presence of Nayan's biographer Milan's(Kunaal Roy Kapur) presence in the hospital, they slowly open up about their individual relationship with the matriarch, reminiscing about the old times, the issues they have had in with their mother all throughout.

Films on troubled relationships between a mother and a daughter have been made before. There was Rituporno Ghosh's delicate 'Unishe April' and in the recent past, Anu Menon made 'Shakuntala Devi' to name a few. Shahane who is also the writer of the film serves a similar environment. Nayan, the matriarch, is unapologetically ambitious. She has lived her life on her own terms and brought up her children as a single parent. Instead of admiring her achievements and resilient nature, her children Anu and Robindro have grown up to resent her. Anu is a celebrity in her own right, but temperamental, moody and foul-mouthed.

Anu's daughter Masha is calmer and submissive but has her own set of issues having grown up in a family that was devoid of any father figure. Its been a family of three women- two of whom are strong-headed and Masha, who is now married and pregnant, craves for a proper family of her own.

While the story highlights the complex relationship of the three women, it lacks coherence. A lot of the plot points are unnecessary and Shahane uses the men as the calming factors who serve as anchors to the firebrand women. Actors like Kunwaljeet Singh and Manav Gohil are totally wasted with limited screen time and their characters are not fleshed out well. Gohil in fact is never really introduced to the audience. His character is either Kajol's companion or a best friend- one isn't very clear and it is never explained.

The film concentrates too much on Kajol's angst against her now ailing mother and meanders around her mostly. Mithila's story is told almost at the fag end of the film and seems so rushed.

At the onset, 'Tribhanga' seemed like an interesting story of three generations of women but it ultimately leaves a lot of unanswered questions and keeps meandering around a single point. I wish Shahane had fleshed out the characters a bit more and explored the complex relationship between the three women equally. What one gets is a half-baked story of a difficult woman who has had issues with her mother and has never been available to her own daughter.

At 1 hour 35 minutes, the film feels stretched, incoherent and half baked. It may be a great idea on paper, but ultimately it doesn't come together well on screen.

That’s a comeback most actors would hope for. Italian acting icon Sophia Loren is returning to films this season with netflix foreign drama ‘The Life Ahead’ and it is already pegged to become Oscar favourite.

Directed and co-written by Sophia Loren’s son Edoardo Ponti, the film is based on Romain Gary’s bestselling novel titled ‘The Life Before Us’ as it stars Sophia Loren as Holocaust survivr who becomes a maternal figure for a 12-year-old street kid named Momo who robs her.

Netflix’s synopsis for “The Life Ahead” reads: “In the colorful Italian port city of Bari, the streetwise 12-year-old Senegalese orphan Momo (Ibrahima Gueye) has ambitions to make his fortune in the underworld of the town’s shady alleyways. One day, he steals a bag of items from the elderly Madame Rosa (Loren), a Holocaust survivor who makes a meagre living raising the children of prostitutes with whom she once shared the streets. When Momo is forced to apologize to Rosa, she reluctantly agrees to take him in temporarily and the two lonely individuals find an unlikely family in each other through a deep and unconventional bond.”

Sophia Loren was last seen in 2009 musical adaptation of ‘Nine’ which was followed by the 2010 television miniseries ‘My House Is Full of Mirrors’. In 2014, she starred in ‘Human Voice’. She will be returning with the Netflix flick after a gap of more than 5 years.

Hailed as an aboriginal sci-fi drama that answers and questions simultaneously about concepts of after-life, hell-heaven, reincarnation, Netflix’s ‘Cargo’ has piqued the interest of many. Liked for its authenticity and not-seen-before treatment of a concept that is usually dealt with the prism of mysticism, director Arati Kadav’s honest approach has found its place on the trending list since its premiere on the streaming channel on September 9.

Talking to WION on her vision behind the film that stars Vikrant Massey, Shweta Tripathi in pivotal roles, Arati Kadav opens up about experimenting with her films, love for the science fiction genre and more.

“I am a crazy sci-fi fan” is how Arati started the conversation as she mentioned how she “lives in a separate universe” as she envisions projects like ‘Cargo’ that is now on Netflix after having travelled to international film festivals for more than a year. “I have only been consuming science fiction, reading and listening to science fiction podcasts for the last 6-7 years,” said Arati as she discussed writing the film.

Arati Kadav was certain she wanted to make a science fiction and so before ‘Cargo’ took shape, she was going to make a superhero sci-fi but it didn’t materialise because of lack of resources. ‘Cargo’ became possible when she got access to a studio where she could make her spaceship as she knew she definitely wanted one in her film. Shweta Tripathi and Vikrant Massey were then roped in. Shweta happened first as she came visiting her one day with a friend and as the actress was working with Vikrant while they filmed for ‘Mirzapur’, Arati knew she had got her Prahastha and Yuvishka (demon god who handled the souls of dead people and his assistant) in Vikrant and Shweta.

“When Shweta came to my house one day, I realised she is an actress and very good at it. I always found her work good but she’s also technically solid and understands philosophy really well. First I got her in. I wooed her by writing the character's name as Shweta. She was shooting with Vikrant for ‘Mirzapur’. So I approached him for this. I feel he’s the next superstar. I had been following his work,” said Arati.

Elaborating how the idea struck to her, she said, “In Africa, Japan, China, India -- every religion has an after-life myth because it helps you to make sense of the life you're living so I thought to myself ‘why not make a film around that and upgrade our myth’. Every generation leaves a story for the next. The last afterlife myth is that of Yamraj which was written 10,000 years ago.”

“Inspiration came from real life. I was in immigration office in Japan when I observed how all of us were standing tired in a queue so it was almost like not just our suitcases were on the conveyor belt but also us.”

As the film deals with the myths of after-life, the concept of hell-heaven is also explored. Does Arati not believe in it in real life? “I don't believe in any of that. My family is religious and I am personally influenced by Buddhist philosophies in general but I do also believe in chaos theory. There is nothing that happens post-death. We are trying to overvalue our lives. I feel that regardless of what you believe, if you arrive at the fact that you have to be a good person then it's okay. All religions are basically encouraging you to be a good person. I know that this is a story and stories are such powerful things. We all chose stories that we believe in,” she said.

With much talk around the novelty of the idea, Arati is happy that it has started a new conversation -- of females in this space. “Females dont dont fit the mythology of a director, forget about them fitting the mythology of science-fiction directors. I just feel it is very nice. When a woman makes a sci-fi and if you are reaching both genders via your story, that’s powerful.”

"The film has extreme reactions. It was anyway meant for 10% people and those people who are liking the film, they do it because they understand the philosophy that goes behind the film,” said Arati.

The first look photos from Netflix’s ‘Ratched’ are out. Actress Sarah Paulson will be seen taking up the role of an antihero in the project that is a prequel to classic film ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’.

The drama will star Sarah Paulson as the Nurse Mildred Ratched, the character played by Louise Fletcher in the 1975 movie based on Ken Kesey's book.

The film ‘Ratched’ is set to premiere on September 18 on Netflix.

Talking about how Sarah got the role, she said that the executive producer of the film Ryan Murphy came to her and pitched her saying, "Lady, do you want to have some like Walter White shit happen?"

According to Sarah, the film is "complicated and dark and not what I expected, and totally terrifying. It's more psychological than murder-scary where somebody jumps out from behind you. It's sort of a meditation on someone's psychological strengths or weaknesses."

Set in 1947, Ratched follows Mildred as she seeks work at a psychiatric hospital in Northern California "where new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind," per the show's official logline. "On a clandestine mission, Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but the wheels are always turning and as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it, Mildred’s stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born."

The cast also includes Cynthia Nixon, Judy Davis, Sharon Stone, Jon Jon Briones, Finn Wittrock, Charlie Carver, Alice Englert, Amanda Plummer, Corey Stoll, Sophie Okenedo and Vincent D'Onofrio.

Top 5 Hollywood news today: Michelle Obama Netflix docu, 'We Are One' online film fest

You can now get up close and personal with former first lady Michelle Obama as Netflix announced a new original documentary on her that is slated to release on May 6.

Titled ‘Becoming’, named after her book, the documentary will follow Michelle Obama on her 34-city tour to promote the book and will offer an “intimate” look at her life.

The Netflix film is directed by Nadia Hallgren, who recently made the documentary short ‘After Maria’. The film looked at the effect of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rican families.

On the news, Michelle Obama said, “It’s hard these days to feel grounded or hopeful, but I hope that like me, you’ll find joy and a bit of respite in what Nadia has made. Because she’s a rare talent, someone whose intelligence and compassion for others comes through in every frame she shoots. Most importantly, she understands the meaning of community, the power of community, and her work is magically able to depict it.”

Shooting the documentary was challenging for Nadia Hallgren who said, “I intended on making a film about her current experience – where she is in this moment and the way she’s reflecting on the entirety of her life, not just her years in the White House.”

Michelle Obama’s memoir ‘Becoming’ became an instant bestseller as it released in 2018.

As for the film on the same name, it marks the collaboration between the Obamas and Netflix after the couple signed a production deal with the streaming giant in 2019. They recently exec-produced the Oscar-nominated documentary ‘American Factory’ and have a number of projects on the way, including a drama series called ‘Bloom’. It is set in the world of fashion in postwar New York.

Netflix documentary on Michelle Obama to stream from May 6

Chris Hemsworth's latest film 'Extraction' is a treat for those who love the action genre. High on stunts, the film’s action sequences are brutal, hardcore and in plenty, so much so that the story becomes secondary. Directed by Sam Hargrave who was the stunt director of 'Avengers: Endgame', ‘Extraction’ is nearly a two-hour film of a man trying to rescue a teenage boy from a local Drug lord in Dhaka and his army of men.

Hemsworth plays Tyler, who is given the job to extract Ovi Mahajan (newcomer Rudraksh Jaiswal) son of Mumbai based drug lord (Pankaj Tripathi) from Dhaka. Ovi has been kidnapped and taken hostage by the local ‘Pablo Escobar’ of the area, Asif (Priyanshu Painyuli) and held captive in a dilapidated house in the outskirts of Dhaka.

Tyler with the help of Nik (Golshifteh Farahani) and team, tracks Ovi down and is almost about to finish the extraction and the take the boy home when the team advises him to abort the mission as someone has gone rogue in the middle. Meanwhile, Saju (Randeep Hooda) who works for Ovi's father is also on the lookout for the boy which leads to clashes with Tyler. As Tyler and Ovi run around the bustling streets of Dhaka, they have Saju and nearly the entire city police looking for them.

Elaborate and unending action sequences, lots of car chases, hand-to-hand combat and men and children wielding bazookas freely forms rest of the film’s story. The entire film is just that, of men flexing muscles, fighting with each other and Hemsworth turning into a one-man army trying to save the boy from getting killed.

The screenplay written by Joe Russo gives backstories to only three characters that too very sketchy ones. Tyler - an ex Australian mercenary who is yet to come to terms with his young son’s death, Saju- for whom his family holds utmost importance and Ovi, the neglected boy of a mafia lord who develops a fondness for Tyler. The backstories are merely mentioned in a scene or two, they are not very deftly written neither do they add much to the narrative. On the contrary that one scene where Tyler narrates his past to Ovi- in a tender moment of bonding- is one the slowest portions of the film.

While the film is based in Dhaka, it has been shot in Mumbai, Ahmadabad and Thailand. Of course, the sub-continent in Hollywood is always shown in a certain way. The stories always tend to glamorize the chaos and poverty of the third world. This film is no different. The only portions that are shown in the film are the seedy by-lanes of a very dusty city where people stay in cramped houses with Bollywood music blaring out of them. So typical, no?

The drug lord, of course, employs a bunch of children and who are more than happy to wield guns at whoever their master wants. They are malnourished but full of anger and ready to do anything to please their boss Asif.
The film gives more importance to the action sequences than the story. It is also important to note that it takes a white man to come and rescue a boy in India even as the local guardian(who probably knows the area better than Tyler) plays a second fiddle in the story.

The film, though has to be given credit for not just the action sequences but also for using some local languages like Hindi and Bengali when needed. Instead of making the Indian actors speak in accented English, the director keeps the authenticity intact by making them speak the local language. In one scene even Hemsworth speaks a few words in Bangla!

Shot by Newton Thomas Sigel the scenes give an immersive feeling that make you feel the punches and blows in many cases.

Randeep Hooda, Pankaj Tripathi are let down by poor screenplay. It is a Hemsworth show all the way - who is also one of the co-producers of the film. Hemsworth literally plays a modern version of one his best onscreen characters Thor- but minus the sass. Hemsworth is glum and only knows the language of violence in this film. The only guy who matches Hemsworth's overpowering screen presence is actor Rudraksh Jaiswal who delivers a confident performance as the lonely Ovi. Painyuli shows spark in the limited screen space he has. He adapts the local Dhaka style of Bengali well.

'Extraction' is technically a very sound film. Slick action, good looking actors fighting it out and some mean stunts. If heavy-duty action thrillers are something that suits your palate, 'Extraction' is an good option. Don’t go by the story so much though.

'Extraction' review: Chris Hemsworth's latest film is just about stunts

For the first time, Bollywood actors Jacqueline Fernandez and Manoj Bajpayee are collaborating on a project and will be seen in a Netflix film, ‘Mrs Serial Killer’.

In a video message, announcing the premiere date for ‘Mrs Serial Killer’, Manoj and Jacqueline shared features on Netflix’s Instagram page.

In the starting of the video, Manoj Bajpayee can be seen talking to Jacqueline Fernandez who is standing in front of a mirror, trying on different gowns.

When she is seen asking for his opinion, Manoj looks confused as he asks why is she doing that and where is she going during the lockdown? She then tells him that there is a world premiere for which she is doing fittings, to which he asks, “which premiere?” Jacqueline then gets shocked and he says he doesn’t know anything about one, which irks Jaqueline.

She then threatens him using a dialogue from Manoj’s film ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’: “Keh Ke Loongi” as Manoj bursts out laughing and reveals that she is talking about the world premiere of ‘Mrs Serial Killer’.
