India's athletics campaign at CWG 2026 begins with Neeraj Chopra, Tajinderpal Toor and Murali Sreeshankar leading the medal challenge

Commonwealth Games 2026 athletics schedule: India's full fixtures, timings and stars to watch

Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra is set to return to the Commonwealth Games 2026 after missing the 2022 edition due to injury. The Olympic and world champion, who claimed gold at the Gold Coast 2018 Games, is aiming to deliver his best performance rather than chase any specific distance when he competes in Glasgow. Neeraj was forced to withdraw from the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games because of an injury, preventing him from defending his title. Ahead of his return, the 28-year-old said his focus remains on giving his maximum effort regardless of the conditions. "There is no specific target as such. The only thought in mind is that whenever you compete, try to give your absolute best and put in 100 percent on the day so that there are no regrets later. During the competition, the goal will simply be to give my best according to whatever the conditions turn out to be," Neeraj told reporters on Sunday. He reiterated that representing India remains his biggest motivation. "Whenever I represent my country, it automatically becomes important to me. Since I have come here to compete for India, I will give my 100 percent. How things turn out will be known on the day of the event, but I always give 100 percent whenever I represent my country, and that is the same target here. Our other athletes are also well-prepared. There are two javelin throwers, Rohit has come in after making a very good throw, so we will try to deliver a good performance together," he further added. Neeraj endured a lower back problem ahead of the World Athletics Championships last year, where he finished eighth. His only appearance this season came at the Doha Diamond League in June, where he secured fourth place with a best throw of 85.69m.The Indian ace revealed that he has addressed the shortcomings from that competition and is now feeling physically stronger."Right now, I am feeling quite fine. Doha was my first competition after the Tokyo World Championships. I had a good throw there, and after that, we worked on the areas where I fell short and focused on my fitness. So now, I am better," he said. Also Read: WATCH | Lionel Messi's secret public appearance after FIFA World Cup final goes viral Having crossed the coveted 90m mark in his career, Neeraj was asked whether there is added pressure to consistently achieve the milestone. He stressed that his priority is continuous improvement while maintaining consistency against the world's best. “It isn't pressure as such, but as an athlete, it is always in my mind to keep increasing my distance. That is constantly on my mind. When you are competing in major games, the biggest challenge is to win a medal or a gold among the world's best athletes. Distance is important to me, and I want to keep pushing it further.” “However, amid that target, I feel that when you face such conditions where all top athletes are competing together, huge distances don't always come out. In those situations, you have to maintain your consistency. So what stays in my mind is to maintain my consistency and keep trying to gradually improve. So yes, definitely, my target is to push my throw even further,” the javelin thrower added. The men's javelin qualification event is scheduled for July 30 at Scotstoun Stadium, with the final set to take place on July 31. Neeraj's challenge to reclaim the Commonwealth Games gold medal will be a tough one, with reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, Sri Lanka's world leader Rumesh Pathirage, Grenada's two-time world champion Anderson Peters, and Trinidad and Tobago's reigning world and former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott among the leading contenders.

For years, Indian sport has relied on a familiar explanation whenever Olympic results disappoint: not enough funding, poor facilities, inadequate coaching, or a lack of government support. But what if those excuses no longer hold? According to former Indian tennis player and Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) President Manisha Malhotra, India today has more resources than ever before. High-performance centres have emerged, sports science has become mainstream, athletes travel abroad regularly, and federations have access to unprecedented funding. Yet when the Olympic Games arrive, India still finds itself asking the same uncomfortable question: why are countries far smaller and poorer continuing to outperform us? "The Indian system looks excellent on paper," Malhotra says in an exclusive conversation with WION. “There is no shortage of money, coaches, facilities, or training opportunities. Then why are we not winning?” It is a question that cuts to the heart of India's Olympic ambitions, especially as the country eyes a bigger role in global sport and dreams of becoming a serious medal contender. For Malhotra, the answer lies beyond infrastructure. The real challenge, she argues, is accountability. In Indian sport, blame often travels faster than responsibility. Athletes blame federations. Federations blame systems. Coaches blame circumstances. Administrators blame a lack of support. The result is a cycle where everyone can point to a problem, but very few own the outcome. "All of us have to be accountable," she says. "If this place doesn't produce results, I'm accountable. Coaches are accountable. Why should athletes be any different?" Her comments come at a time when Indian sport is transforming. The country has embraced data analytics, sports science, and modern training methodologies. However, Malhotra believes that possessing data and knowing how to use it are two very different things. "We have the data," she says. “I'm not sure we yet have enough expertise to interpret it.” That gap between collecting information and extracting performance gains may be one of the hidden reasons India continues to struggle on the biggest sporting stage. Also Read: A miracle in the Caribbean: How a country of just 156,000 people qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Yet the problems begin much earlier. While conversations around Olympic medals often focus on elite athletes, Malhotra believes India's greatest weakness remains at the foundation. Despite frequent discussions about grassroots development, she argues that a genuine grassroots structure barely exists. The reason is simple: a shortage of developmental coaches. India has millions of children in schools, but very few trained professionals dedicated to identifying and nurturing athletic talent at an early age. Physical education often remains an afterthought rather than a specialised profession. "The most important coaches are the foundational coaches," she says. “They set the tone for everything that follows.” Without that base, the pipeline of future champions becomes fragile regardless of how much money is invested at the elite level. Malhotra also challenges another long-held belief in Indian sport, the idea that success can simply be imported through foreign exposure. For years, athletes and parents viewed overseas training as the ultimate solution. But according to her, champions are not created by plane tickets alone. What separates successful sporting nations is not a foreign training camp. It is a culture, a system, and an environment that develops athletes every single day. That is why she believes India requires far more high-performance centres like IIS. Not one. Not two. At least ten. "If India wants to become a top Olympic nation, we need many more centres of excellence across the country," she says. The argument becomes even more relevant as India explores the possibility of hosting the Olympic Games in the future. Hosting would bring prestige, visibility, and global attention. But it would also expose the country's sporting depth. A host nation receives representation across a wide range of sports. To compete credibly, India would need significantly larger athlete pools in disciplines such as athletics, swimming, gymnastics, cycling, rowing, and combat sports. Those are not problems that can be solved overnight. They require long-term investment, stronger systems, and a culture that rewards excellence while demanding accountability. Perhaps the most striking part of Malhotra's vision, however, is that it extends beyond medals. She believes sport should create informed, confident, and ethical individuals, athletes who understand their craft, question decisions, think critically, and develop values that last beyond competition. She points to Neeraj Chopra not merely as an Olympic champion, but as an example of character. His humility, discipline, and grace have made him one of India's most admired sporting figures. Because ultimately, Olympic medals may define success in the public eye. But for those building the future of Indian sport, success is also measured by the kind of people that sport produces. India's Olympic journey has undoubtedly progressed over the last decade. Funding has increased. Facilities have improved. Sports science has advanced. The next leap, according to Malhotra, will require something harder to build than stadiums or training centres. It will require accountability, expertise, and a sporting culture willing to confront uncomfortable truths. Only then, she believes, can India begin converting its immense potential into Olympic success.

India has invested heavily in sport, but Olympic success remains elusive. Former Indian tennis player and IIS president Manisha Malhotra explains why accountability, coaching, and culture matter

No shortage of money, coaches or facilities. So why isn't India winning more Olympic medals?

Multiple elite Indian athletes have accused javelin coach Naval Singh of mental harassment and abusive behaviour, prompting a formal complaint to the Sports Authority of India (SAI). Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra, Paralympic champion Sumit Antil, and other top athletes have raised serious concerns about Singh’s conduct, including repeated verbal abuse and intimidation. The complaint was submitted on April 10 after earlier discussions with SAI and Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) officials failed to resolve the issue. Sumit Antil said, “I have always been a clean athlete and I don’t want to be part of any controversy. I tried to explain to him (coach Naval Singh) multiple times, but this is not the first time. It has gone beyond my patience level,” he was quoted saying to The Bridge. He further alleged, "He gets drunk and sends random recordings abusing us and dragging our families in it. He tends to behave this way when competitions approach.” WION has access to the emails. Antil revealed that he had earlier approached SAI officials for intervention. "I approached SAI Deputy Director Arunlal and the CEO of TOPS [Nash Johal]. They initially tried to resolve the matter through a compromise, but this time I was not going to let it pass," he was quoted as saying. Also Read: IPL 2026: RR manager fined INR 1 lakh for using phone in dugout, escapes ban He added, "I may be the first to speak up, but there are many who have silently endured this.” In his written complaint, Antil detailed prolonged harassment. "Over a prolonged period, I have personally experienced repeated instances of verbal abuse, humiliation, and mental harassment under his conduct," he wrote. He further wrote, "The language used has been extremely degrading, not only towards athletes but also towards our families, including deeply disrespectful remarks about our mothers and even about athletes like Neeraj Chopra, Navdeep Singh and Sandeep Chaudhary." Antil also alleged that Singh appeared intoxicated during training sessions, creating an unsafe environment. “Additionally, threats related to misuse of authority, including false allegations, have caused fear among athletes. I have already raised this issue through formal discussions with the CEO of TOPS in the presence of SDO Para and other officials," he wrote. Highlighting the mental toll, Antil added, “This ongoing situation has severely affected my mental well-being, dignity and sense of safety. I feel deeply distressed that despite giving my best for the country, I am subjected to such an environment. I am ready to submit audio evidence and fully cooperate in any investigation."
Here's what Neeraj Chopra had to say
Neeraj Chopra backed the complaint, saying in his communication, “I stand in full agreement with my fellow athletes and strongly demand strict action in this matter.” He added, “I write this as an athlete who has had the honour of representing India at both national and international levels, and who firmly believes that sport must uphold dignity, discipline, and respect. The statements made by coach Naval Singh are not just inappropriate, they are disgraceful." Chopra also called for immediate action. “Abusive language directed at me, my family, and fellow athletes cross every boundary of professionalism and basic human decency. I am shocked and disappointed to hear such derogatory comments. This kind of behaviour from a person in authority is intolerable and brings disrepute to the sporting system as a whole," he wrote. He further urged authorities, "I urge the Sports Authority of India to take immediate and decisive action. There must be clear consequences for such conduct, along with strict accountability, to ensure that no athlete has to endure this kind of behavior again. Our athletes deserve professionalism, respect, and a system that protects them, not one that tolerates misconduct. I expect this issue to be addressed with the seriousness it demands."
Other athletes join the chorus
Support for the complaint also came from Arjuna awardee Sandeep Chaudhary. "I would like to formally bring to your notice that I have also experienced instances of inappropriate, abusive and unprofessional behaviour from coach Naval Singh. On multiple occasions, the conduct has included derogatory language and offensive remarks, even extending towards my family, which is deeply unacceptable," he wrote. Navdeep Singh echoed similar concerns. "I have also faced instances of abusive, derogatory and highly inappropriate behaviour from coach Naval Singh, including offensive remarks directed towards my family. I fully support the concerns raised, as this reflects a consistent pattern of misconduct that has negatively impacted the dignity, mental well-being and overall environment for athletes," he said. Despite multiple complaints, Antil claimed no action has been taken so far. Speaking to The Bridge, he said, “There has been no satisfactory response from SAI despite multiple follow ups.” He added, “There's no action taken even when Neeraj and I have complained. What would junior athletes have to go through?” Antil further said, "I'm seriously shocked that no official is able to respond to it despite complaints from top athletes." Attempts to contact Naval Singh were unsuccessful.

Neeraj Chopra, Sumit Antil allege harassment by javelin coach Naval Singh; demand strict action from SAI: Report

Dr Klaus Bartonietz has spent decades decoding the science behind elite performance. The German biomechanics expert, who played a pivotal role in guiding Neeraj Chopra to Olympic gold at the Tokyo Games, believes that success in throwing events is not just about strength; it is about creating complete athletes capable of thriving under pressure. Now serving as a technical expert for the Inspire Institute of Sport’s (IIS) throws programme in Hisar, Bartonietz is focused on shaping India’s next generation of track and field stars. Having previously contributed to Chopra’s Diamond League triumph in 2022 and his World Championship gold the same year, the veteran coach brings both scientific depth and practical experience to Indian athletics. Reflecting on his journey, Bartonietz says his understanding of biomechanics has “dramatically increased” over the years, from early academic curiosity to hands-on coaching of elite athletes. “The goal was always to support athletes, not just do academic research. When you work closely with coaches, you know exactly what matters,” he explained in an exclusive conversation with WION. Rather than pointing to a specific technical flaw among young Indian throwers, Bartonietz identifies a broader developmental gap. “What I’m missing is a well-structured, multi-sided preparation. We want an athlete, not just a javelin thrower or discus thrower,” he says. According to him, athletes who lack exposure to multiple disciplines often struggle to adapt to new challenges, ultimately limiting their performance ceiling. Also Read: T20 World Cup 2026: England win thriller, Nepal win hearts as former champions kick start campaign
What makes a world-class thrower?
For Bartonietz, biomechanics is only part of the equation. Mental strength can be just as decisive. “Maybe it’s about 50 percent of the deal,” he notes, referring to psychological readiness in competition. Throwing every day is not possible,” he says.Regeneration, physiotherapy, ice baths, and strengthening smaller muscle groups must become central to training programmes, he adds. The veteran coach is wary of popular training myths. “You don’t just train hard — you have to be hard but smart,” he says. He also challenges romantic notions of talent. “Talent is, first of all, hard work. Early success does not guarantee long-term excellence.”
Technology has changed the game
From film cameras to smartphone video, technological progress has revolutionised biomechanical analysis. “It changed very much the possibilities to influence training,” Bartonietz explains, noting that real-time data now helps coaches assess factors such as ground contact time and force generation within milliseconds. Yet, technology is only a tool, not a substitute for coaching wisdom.
Vision for India’s future
At IIS Hisar, Bartonietz sees enormous potential. “Helping to prepare top athletes and producing medals on the world stage, that is the goal,” he says. He believes professional structures, strong infrastructure, and results-driven systems will be key to India’s sporting rise. “It’s a highly professional approach, and that is what we need.” For Bartonietz, success ultimately comes down to measurable impact. “Results count. Not the number of athletes, not how much movement you analyze, the effect is important.” With experts like him guiding emerging talents such as discus thrower Ujjawal and javelin prospect Himanshu, India’s throws ecosystem appears to be moving toward a more scientific, performance-driven era.

World Athletics Championships: Neeraj Chopra Misses Podium For First Time In 27 Events

The Olympic and World champion from India, Neeraj Chopra, endured a disappointing run in the final of the Javelin Throw at the World Athletics Championship 2025 in Tokyo. Returning to the venue where he won his maiden Olympic medal - a gold medal during the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games four years ago, Neeraj finished in the eighth spot, with his best throw being 84.03m. He, however, finished above his counterpart and on-field foe, Arshad Nadeem, from Pakistan, who finished at the 10th spot with his best being 82.75m. Meanwhile, Neeraj’s fellow Indian, Sachin Yadav, missed the medal by just one position, finishing a record fourth following his best performance to date. His 86.27m was his Personal Best (PB). In a rather disappointing outing for the gold medal contender, India’s Neeraj failed to breach the 84m mark, having failed to secure distances in two separate attempts out of five. Starting with a promising throw of 83.65m, Neeraj bettered the number in his next throw, recording 84.03m in his second. While he remained ahead of Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem after the first two attempts (who recorded 82.73m in his first and a failed second attempt), Neeraj couldn't go past that distance for the night. After a failed third throw, Neeraj recorded 82.26 in his fourth attempt before the rain interrupted his momentum, resulting in him failing to improve on his number and finishing out of the top two for the first time in 26 competitions; he, however, finished outside the podium for any position for the first time in seven years. Seemingly disgusted with his underwhelming performance, Neeraj never looked like performing up to his levels in the world final in Tokyo. Nadeem, on the other hand, recorded his best in this third attempt (82.75m) before a failed fourth attempt ended his run in this World Athletics Championship.
Sachin Yadav’s massive first throw and a new winner
Neeraj’s fellow Indian, Sachin Yadav, was the best-performing javelin thrower on the day from the subcontinent. He recorded his PB in his first attempt (86.27m), before breaching the 85m mark twice in his following four attempts.
