<p>India celebrates its 78th Independence Day on August 15, 2024, and everyone, from cricketers to footballers to former and current stars across all sports, extended their heartfelt greetings on social media. Be it Indian cricket all-rounder Hardik Pandya or two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra - the sporting heroes celebrated the country’s Independence Day with their fans.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Indian contingent at the recently concluded Paris Olympic Games 2024 had a mixed outing. While some came agonisingly close to winning an Olympic medal but finished fourth in their respective disciplines, others, like ace Shooter Manu Bhaker, created history, becoming the first Indian athlete – male or female, to win two medals in a single edition.</p>

<p>Besides her, Neeraj also won the silver medal in javelin throw while the Indian men’s hockey won their second successive bronze at the Summer Games, beating Spain in the medal match. There were three medal debutants: Sarabjot Singh and Swapnil Kusale in Shooting and Aman Sehrawat in Freestyle Wrestling.</p>

<p>However, what made headlines at the sporting spectacle was grappler Vinesh Phogat, who got disqualified from the gold medal match for being overweight by 100gms. Although she appealed against the decision at the Court of Arbitration (CAS), the verdict came against her.&nbsp;</p>

Cricketers, Olympic athletes celebrate India’s 78th Independence Day

<p>Gold medal winner in the javelin final at the Paris Olympics 2024, Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, carried an injury through the tournament while ending his country’s 40-year wait for an individual gold medal. Nadeem beat the defending champion from India, Neeraj Chopra, for the coveted gold medal at the Summer Games</p>

<p>Almost a week after his incredible feat in Paris, where he created the Olympic Record (OR) with his gold medal-winning throw of 92.97m, Arshad revealed he suffered an injury in the lead-up to the Summer Games.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking at the Prime Minister's House (during Pakistan’s Independence Day) in Islamabad on Wednesday (August 14), Nadeem said,</p>

<p>“Just five minutes before I had to go to the call room (the room where athletes in track and field events gather before their names are announced and they appear on the track), I felt a pain. I told my coach. And he said, ‘Kuch nahi hota, tu sher hai (there will be no issues, you are a lion.”</p>

<p>“I had actually picked up an injury while throwing on 21st July when we were training at Punjab Stadium. We were supposed to fly on 24th July. We (the coach, doctor and myself) didn’t tell anyone.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“During the first throw, I felt some pain, and the doctor applied some medicine. I told him I didn’t know if that would have any effect. The doctor also told me ‘tum sher ho’. Both the doctor and coach told me the same words,” Pakistan’s newest sporting sensation added.</p>

<h2>OR done, now eyes on WR</h2>

<p>Meanwhile, speaking about his personal-best throw of 92.97m in the finals, Arshad revealed what went behind the scenes since the qualifying round. Arshad, like Neeraj, was among the three javelin throwers who qualified for the final with their early attempts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the summit clash, where he was faulted for his false first throw,&nbsp;like Neeraj, Arshad’s second throw sealed the gold medal for him, and what he told his coach at that time is worth noting.</p>

<p>“In the warm-up throw, it crossed 82m, then I knew I would be able to throw. But in the first throw, my run-up was ruined twice. But in the second throw, as soon as the javelin left my hand, I knew it was a 90+ throw.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"After that throw, I came to my coach and said we had gold and Olympic Record. Now let me try for the world record,” Nadeem said, as quoted by the Indian Express.</p>

<p>India's javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra wants to compete with international stars in India. His comments came after winning a silver medal in men's javelin throw event at the Paris Olympics 2024. Neeraj had also won the gold medal in the same event in Tokyo 2021.</p>

<p>"It's a dream of mine to compete with other international stars in India. Hopefully, there will be an international competition soon in India and I can do that," Chopra said during a chat session organised by the Olympics.com, reported news agency PTI.</p>

<p>"I am entering a new season now. So, I don't have that much time to change training methods or technique. But I hope to improve upon a couple of areas, especially the line of the javelin. You know, the correct angle of throwing so that I get more power in my throw. I will certainly work on it," he added.</p>

<p>Neeraj and Arshad fouled their first attempts while settling scores in their second. Pakistan’s Arshad attained his personal best and an OR of 92.97m distance, whereas India’s own Chopra came close, recording his season-best throw of 89.45m. That, however, sealed the medal tally, at least for the first two spots.</p>

<p>However, considering Neeraj had a groin injury to worry about, and three out of his six attempts got disqualified, his 89.45m throw is praiseworthy. Speaking his heart out in an exclusive chat with WION, Neeraj said,</p>

<p>“The competition was great. Arshad was well-prepared and executed a brilliant throw. Just when Arshad threw the 92.97m mark, although I hadn’t crossed the 90m till now, I had this strange belief that I could also throw this far. I enjoyed my throw.</p>

<p>“For some reason, I couldn’t feel my run the way I should. My mind was on my groin injury, thinking it shouldn’t hurt. Only my second throw was valid, but every other was a foul.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“But winning the medal for my country was the best feeling,” Neeraj continued.</p>

<p>Chopra had a rocky journey with multiple fouls but managed to secure an impressive silver and season-best throw of 89.45 M and bagged the silver medal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chopra and Nadeem's lives have run parallel, despite being born on opposite sides of the border.</p>

<p>Both champions were born to rural agricultural families and had to face tough times to take up a sport in nations that breathe cricket. Arshad's father had to pool money to get him trained, while Neeraj got into the sport after his family forced him to lose weight and get fit.</p>
