Now, as the High Performance Director of the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) in Bellary, Hall is convinced India is on the verge of making a huge break-through &mdash; and not by default, but through strategy, science, and systems.
"I had reach a point in my career where I'd done most of what I'd set out to do," says Hall in an exclusive interview to WION. "After Paris 2024, I sat back and thought: Do I take another four years with Great Britain, or do I try something new and significant?" India provided the answer."
Supported by JSW Sports and Parth Jindal's vision, IIS has been spearheading private-sector investment in Olympic sport in India. Its mission is singular: Create world-class athletes, consistently and sustainably. And Hall's role? To lead the charge.
<h2>Building the Indian Olympic engine</h2>
India's Olympic experience has been an epic of disparate brilliance and not continuous success. Hall, however, doesn't care about the past &mdash; he's concerned with the future.&nbsp;
"India has the potential. It has the enthusiasm. But Olympic sport now is not just a matter of talent, but preparation," he says. "You are competing on science, medicine, coaching, facilities, psychology &mdash; it's a whole ecosystem."
"At IIS, much of that system is in place already. World-class facilities for gyms, nutrition laboratories, recovery rooms, and dormitory accommodations set the stage for serious elite preparation. But Hall was quick to point out: it's not sufficient to create a building. You must construct a system," he added.

Hall goes on to explain the process. "The first step is talent identification. In a country this big, there is ample talent out there &mdash; it's about locating it. Towards that goal, IIS is rolling out contemporary, digitally led outreach tactics, such as animated films on social media to describe routes to entry for emerging athletes."
Then comes elite coaching. Hall believes Indian coaching must embrace a mindset shift &mdash; from cautious to courageous. &ldquo;We need coaches who ask, &lsquo;What is possible?&rsquo; not &lsquo;What&rsquo;s been done before?&rsquo;&rdquo;
Crucial to the next step is sports science and medicine, an area where IIS already excels. &ldquo;The setup here is as good as I&rsquo;ve seen anywhere. It allows for data-driven, athlete-specific performance planning.&rdquo;
But the last, usually hidden piece is operations and logistics &mdash; how players get around, where they play, how competing schedules are coordinated. "Being well-organised on and off the field makes a huge difference in medal margins."
Another transformative component Hall is bringing in is performance psychology. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re in discussions with one of the world&rsquo;s leading sports psych firms,&rdquo; he reveals. &ldquo;They&rsquo;ve worked with Olympians, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/premier-league">Premier League</a> stars &mdash; and they&rsquo;ll be helping our athletes understand not just how to perform, but how to prepare mentally for high-stakes moments.&rdquo;
"This will involve both performance-oriented psych support and lifestyle guidance, particularly essential for young athletes making the step up into elite sport," he explains further.

Hall is aware of the structural and cultural challenges. "A lot of athletes here still view sport as a way to a government job &mdash; in the railways, the Army. But we want to demonstrate that sport can be a career in itself for the long term," he said.

The decision to miss the Asian Championships is not surprising, as Chopra had not competed in the event after 2017, when he bagged gold in Bhubaneswar. He has had his eyes set on the global meets like the Diamond League, World Championships, and the Olympics ever since then.
A few of the best performers at the recent Federation Cup qualified for the Asian Championships, which is a major competition before the World Championships in September. There were some surprises in the omissions, though.
<h2>Toor, Dev Kumar Meena fail to qualify&nbsp;</h2>
Defending Asian champion and shot put national record holder <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/tajinderpal-singh-toor">Tajinderpal Singh Toor</a> was omitted after coming second in Kochi. Equally, pole vaulter Dev Kumar Meena, even though he broke his own national record, failed to qualify according to the AFI's qualification standard and was also omitted.
Other athletes who were competing and training outside the country with AFI's advance clearance, including Avinash Sable (men's 3000m steeplechase), Parul Chaudhary (women's 3000m steeplechase), and Gulveer Singh (5000m and 10000m), were added to the final team.
The squad also includes new national record holders such as sprinter Animesh Kujur (200m) and triple jumper Praveen Chitravel, who broke his own record at the Federation Cup. National record holder Annu Rani earned a place in the team with a 58.82m heave at the Indian Open Throws Competition in March, even as she had registered a lower score of 56.66m at the Federation Cup.
The AFI had made attending the Federation Cup (April 21-24) a central selection criterion with exemptions allowed only in exceptional circumstances.

“Even though my early throws were around 80-83m, I pushed hard in the last two attempts finishing strong. Competing at this high level, it’s important to stay mentally tough and fight through,” he continued.

Following his second-place finish in Lausanne, Neeraj earned seven points, tying with Weber (15 points) in third place in the Diamond League rankings, while Peters stands tall with 21 points. Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic is in the second spot with 16 points; he was placed seventh on Thursday with his best throw of 82.03m.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Chopra, who won the Lausanne DL leg in 2022 and 2023, was earlier reported to miss the competition to undergo surgery; he, however, delayed that call and confirmed last week that he would participate in Lausanne.

On September 5, another DL Meet will get underway in Zurich, Switzerland, where the men’s javelin throw competition is scheduled.&nbsp;

Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra has decided to take part in Lausanne Diamond League on August 22 after winning the silver in the men's javelin throw at the recently concluded Paris Olympics 2024.

The decision comes amid Chopra's injury for which he travelled to Germany following the Paris games. The ace thrower, however, has decided to take part in the DL.

"I have finally decided to participate in the Lausanne Diamond League, which begins August 22," said Neeraj while speaking to news agency ANI.

During the Olympics, Neeraj had expressed his wish to take part in the Diamond League Final in September. He, however, had to play in at least one of the two remaining DL Meetings to confirm his place in the final. The next two DL meets are in Lausanne on August 22 or in Zurich on September 5.

Neeraj has been suffering from a groin injury for quite some time now and has said that he'll take a decision on surgery after the conclusion of the Paris games.

"I already threw 89.94m (in 2022) with this injury. When I throw, I always focus almost 50 per cent on my injury. We have to focus mostly on technique, but it's really hard for me with this injury," Neeraj had said.

"Doctors told me to go for surgery last year. I have been stretching myself till now... There have been treatments since. But we will have to take a big decision," he added.

The ace javelin thrower spoke about the current status of his injury and said: "Luckily, the injury didn't aggravate much after Paris and it is better as of now thanks to treatment and other steps taken during and post Paris games."

Chopra gave special thanks to his physio Ishan Marwaha for helping him with the injury maintenance and said: "He has been with me since 2017 he helped me a lot through injuries and surgeries.

"I Won gold in Asian Games, World Championship thanks to the strength training I did with him which helped maintain strength despite not training much."
