The Enforcement Directorate, on Wednesday, June 21, raided 15 premises in Mumbai and one outside the city as a part of its money laundering probe into the Covid jumbo centre scam. They searched the premises of Sujit Patkar and IAS officer Sanjeev Jaiswal. Patkar is a close aide to Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut and Jaiswal, then additional municipal commissioner, is a close aide to Aaditya Thackeray. ED has also raided the premises of contractors and intermediaries involved in the alleged scam.

The raided places include Lifeline Hospital Management Services in Sasmira Marg, Worli, and Patkar's residence in Santacruz (East), the Indian Express reported. Here's everything you need to know about Mumbai's Covid jumbo centre scam.

About Mumbai's Covid Jumbo Centre Scam

The Enforcement Directorate opened the investigation into the alleged Covid jumbo centre scam based on the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). In August 2022, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Kirit Somaiya, registered an FIR about the same at the Azad Maidan police station against four Lifeline Hospital Management Services partners, including Sujit Patkar. The other four names in the FIR were Dr Hemant Ramsharan Gupta, Sanjay Madanlal Shah, and Raju Nandkumar Salunkhe. Later, the local police transferred the case to the Mumbai Police Economic Offences Wing (EOW).

In January 2023, EOW asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) senior officials for details about contracts and transfers to Lifeline Hospital Management Services. During the pandemic, the civic body contracted the company to set up Covid jumbo centres in Mumbai. ED also interrogated the civic officials about the matter.

BJP leader Kirti Somaiya claimed the Covid jumbo centre scam is a ₹100-crore scam. However, the Mumbai Police EOW pegged it at ₹38 crore.

ED has searched the Chembur residence of Suraj Chouhan, another close aide of Aaditya Thackeray.

In the FIR, Somaiya accused the firm of getting the contract by forging documents, including the partnership deed. He also accused the firm of hiding information about being barred by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority from giving medical services. Furthermore, the BJP leader alleged that the authorities allotted the contracts at exorbitant rates to contractors linked to Shiv Sena leaders but had prior experience in the healthcare service sector.

While Mumbai Police's EOW is investigating the criminal aspect of the alleged Covid jumbo centre scam, ED is tracking the money trails of the proceeds. So far, the EOW has arrested two people, Raju Nandakumar Salunke and Bala Ramchandra Kadam. They have also questioned many BMC officials, including IS Chahal.

Here's everything you need to know about Mumbai's Covid jumbo centre scam. About Mumbai's Covid Jumbo Centre Scam The Enforcement Directorate opened the investigation into the alleged Covid jumbo centre scam based on the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Police said that over 12 to 13 pieces of the woman's body were recovered from the site. Sahani showed no remorse while admitting that he committed the crime, cops said. It is suspected that the murder may have taken place on June 4. Though the exact cause is yet to be ascertained, neighbours told the police that the couple fought quite often. “In the preliminary inquiry, it seems that the accused, in order to destroy the evidence, chopped the body in pieces. We nabbed the accused while he was trying to leave the building. We are further interrogating him,” said Jayant Bajbale, Deputy Commissioner of Police. "We believe that Sahani cut the woman’s body into pieces so as to make it easy for him to dispose them of," Bajbale added. A police officer from Nayanagar Police Station said that they are looking for the missing body parts. Police are yet to file an FIR against the accused, but reports suggest that the Sahani may be charged for murder and destruction of evidence. A forensic team has also been called to collect samples and evidence from the flat. WATCH WION LIVE HERE

India's longest bridge, the under-construction Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, is likely to be open to the public towards the end of this year. Authorities have told that 95 percent of the work has been completed. WION tells you more in this report.

Mumbai Trans Harbour Link: India's longest sea bridge expected to be operational by year end

Paying toll tax can be cumbersome as sometimes we have to wait in long lines of cars, all spewing smoke and ruining a perfect evening drive. But if plans for Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) come to fruition, you will be able to zoom past the toll booth at 100 kmph and still make the payment.

The under-construction Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) will be India's longest sea bridge upon completion. It will also be the first sea bridge in India to have an Open Road Tolling (ORT) system. This means commuters will not need to slow down to pay toll charges.

MTHL is being built at a cost of more than USD 2 billion. When completed, the bridge will cater to about 70,000 vehicles. Media reports say that 95 per cent of the work has been completed and the bridge will be ready before the year ends.

"Work on structures is almost complete. Tomorrow evening, at an event, we are going to connect the bridge to the mainland. The remaining work -- road laying, electrical, intelligent transport system (electronic tolling) -- will be done after the event. It is possible to achieve the target we set two years ago, to finish by December end this year," said SVR Srinivas, the commissioner of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority.

Increased connectivity

This bridge will connect Mumbai and its satellite city Navi Mumbai. The commute time will just be 12 to 15 minutes. This is a significant decrease from the several hours it takes today. The bridge will connect Mumbai to the mainland.

Media reports said that Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will visit the site on Wednesday evening.

Mumbai-Navi Mumbai bridge will let commuters cross toll booth at 100 kmph

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the financial capital of India, Mumbai, is planning to construct a "Bow-String" bridge to connect the 10.58-kilometre Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) with Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL).

To ease vehicular congestion, the BMC has started MCRP to significantly reduce travelling time in Mumbai. The high-speed road project is expected to originate from the Princess Street flyover near Marine Drive and will end at BWSL.

Notably, the decision to build a "Bow-String" bridge was taken after the local fishing community started a protest. Earlier, an arterial bridge was to be constructed on monopiles (pillars) to connect MCRP with BWSL. However, the fishing community argued that the gap between pillars was not adequate for boats which could be dangerous for boats during strong waves, as well as hamper their livelihood.

They demanded that the gap between pillars be around 200 metres while the BMC suggested 60 metres. As the protests snowballed, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde intervened, earlier this year in January and recommended that the gap be increased to 120 metres.

After a relative period of back and forth, BMC gave up on the arterial bridge and decided to construct a ‘Bow String’ girder bridge.

“The primary reason why we chose this option is that this bridge doesn’t require additional piling works and the removal of one of the existing monopiles will not pose any threat to the structure. This bridge will be held by high-tension chords and these kind of designs are suitable for smaller bridges built without any strong foundation,” one of the officials was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

ALSO READ | BMC takes steps to curb dust in Indian financial capital Mumbai

What is a Bow-String bridge?

A Bow-String bridge is a type of bridge which is held together using high-tension chords instead of resting on pillars for support. The arch-shaped chords support the end of the bridge tightly with the surface. Due to the shape of the bridges, which resembles that of a 'bow', the name came into being.

One of the major reasons why such a bridge has been preferred by the BMC is because of safety. After BMC considered the requests of fishermen, the gap between pillars was increased but it proved to be unsafe for the overall structural integrity of the bridge.

“The work on the other stretches of the coastal road is on schedule. This bridge will come up in the northern fag-end, which is within the last one kilometre. ALSO READ | BMC takes steps to curb dust in Indian financial capital Mumbai What is a Bow-String bridge? A Bow-String bridge is a type of bridge which is held together using high-tension chords instead of resting on pillars for support. The arch-shaped chords support the end of the bridge tightly with the surface. Due to the shape of the bridges, which resembles that of a 'bow', the name came into being. One of the major reasons why such a bridge has been preferred by the BMC is because of safety. After BMC considered the requests of fishermen, the gap between pillars was increased but it proved to be unsafe for the overall structural integrity of the bridge. However, with the change in design, the deadline may very well be pushed beyond May 2024. “The work on the other stretches of the coastal road is on schedule. This bridge will come up in the northern fag-end, which is within the last one kilometre. If the remaining stretch is ready before bridge work completes, then the MCRP may be opened for vehicular movement,” added the official. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
