In an interview with Sportstar after end of Day 1's play, Shaw spoke at length about the challenges of managing expectations and handling criticism. He said, "I have realised that whenever you score runs, you are on top of the world. But when you don't score then people will come after you. Expectations kaafi rehte hai [there are quite a lot of expectations] when you score regularly, so when you suddenly get out early in three or four innings, people start thinking 'yaar, yeh hai woh hai [people start questioning you].' Only you know whether you are following the process, or whether you are being disciplined more than before, are you sleeping on time, eating well before a game. All those things matter. I am just trying to follow those things and I am trying to spend time alone as much as possible. I cut out the outside noise - be it on social media or in other platforms."

Shaw further asserted, "I try to avoid those things or at times, just ask my manager to handle social-media activities. I have brand commitments, and that's why it is not possible to stay away from social media, and thus, you eventually end up seeing what's being written or spoken about. But I am still trying to cut out the noise as much as possible. People are talking about you and then will continue doing the same even after 10 years, so you should not think too much about it, because if you start reading too much between the lines, you will be affecting yourself."

With some a record-breaking knock, Shaw has raised his stocks and will certainly be under the radar of the BCCI selectors when they meet to announce the white-ball squads for the upcoming home series versus New Zealand. Despite his heroics in the domestic circuit, he has been overlooked for national duties. Shaw has only played four Tests, six ODIs and a solitary T20I since his international debut in late 2018.

India takes over G20 Presidency, first Development Working Group meet takes place

The first meeting of the Development Working Group (DWG) under India’s G20 Presidency is taking place in Mumbai from December 13 to December 16 with all G20 members, guest countries and invited international organisations expected to attend the meeting.

G20 Development Working Group holds first meeting in Mumbai

Indian batting collapsed like a pack of cards under pressure as Australian women showed clinical precision to record a comfortable 21-run victory in the third T20 International in Mumbai on Wednesday. Australia now lead the five-match series 2-1.

Chasing a target of 173, India were in cruise control mode at 106 for 2, riding on some cavalier hitting from Shafali Verma (52 off 41 balls) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (37 off 27 balls). The duo added 73 in just 8.4 overs and 67 off 40 deliveries looked eminently gettable.

But, once Shafali was holed out at the mid-wicket boundary, there was a slump as India lost four wickets for the addition of 17 runs in less than three overs as the match turned decisively in favour of Southern Stars. India were finally restricted to 151 for 7 in 20 overs.

Richa Ghosh (1) and Harmanpreet, the two other big hitters apart from Shafali were also dismissed while going for big hits and almost all the Australian bowlers reduced the pace of their deliveries to make it difficult for strokeplay.

Darcie Brown (2/19), Meghan Schutt (1/23 in 4 overs), and spinner Ashleigh Gardener (2/21) were exceptional on the day.

Deepti Sharma (25 not out off 17 balls), not exactly known for her power-hitting, would have never been able to consistently hit those big shots as it became a comfortable win for Alyssa Healy's women.

Earlier, Australia recovered from early jolts and rode on flamboyant Ellyse Perry's 75 off 47 balls to post 172 for 8 after batting first.
Invited to bat, Australia made a disastrous start as captain Alyssa Healy and Tahlia McGrath got out in the first and second overs respectively. Renuka Thakur had opener Healy LBW for just one while Anjali Sarvani got rid of one-down McGrath, also for one, as Australia were five for 2 in the second over. India women vs Australia women: 3rd T20I: India lose by 21 runs as Australia lead series 2-1

With an aim to restore parity, the Indian women's cricket team will be taking the field on Sunday after losing a contest where Australian batting proved too hot to handle for the bowlers. India did not do a whole lot wrong in the match but the Australian side, on its day, is a different kettle of fish.

Batting first, India managed to put up a decent score of 172/5 on board. The score, largely made possible due to the blistering start provided by the opening duo of Shafali Varma and Smriti Mandhana should have posed a stiff challenge.

However, Beth money, Alyssa Healy and Tahlia McGrath had other ideas. The Australian camp managed to chase the total in 19 overs at the loss of only one wicket.

The bowling lacked discipline and incisiveness. Barring Anjali Sarwani, all bowlers went above 9 rpo.

Though the game may be tilting in favour of the Australians once again, the Indians have the resources in their arsenal to make a comeback. With an eye on the T20 World Cup preparations, India will like to go toe-to-toe with this Australian outfit and hope that home advantage elevates their performance.

With ten deaths over the last month and a sharp spike in cases, India’s financial capital city Mumbai is staring at a measles outbreak.

Until November 24, 2022, Mumbai has reported 252 confirmed cases.

Measles is a common infectious disease, especially among children, in which your body feels hot and your skin is covered in small red spots.

Children aged between 09 months to 5 years are mostly affected by measles.

In Mumbai, this is a huge jump from the last two years. In 2019, the city saw 25 measles cases and in 2020, only nine were reported the entire year. But this year, in less than two months, 233 cases are reported.

In Mumbai, there are seven hotspot areas currently - Dharavi, Govandi, Kurla, Mahim, Bandra, and Matunga reporting the maximum number of cases.

“The start of the outbreak was indicated in October when the city reported 60 cases as against a mere 25 in September this year. That is when we decided we need to start surveying slum areas which are reporting maximum cases,” said Dr Mangala Gomare, Executive Health Officer, BMC.

Surveys revealed that due to the pandemic, measles vaccination of children got affected. Close to 20,000 children missed their measles vaccine.

“Our survey report suggested that only 41% of the eligible children had taken vaccination. We have started to raise awareness in these slum areas and track the children who have missed them. We are holding vaccination camps for them too,” said Dr Gomare to WION.

The BMC has issued an advisory stating that ‘Given Measles outbreak in Mumbai all the citizens are appealed to vaccinate their children between 9 months to 5 years of age with Measles containing vaccine.’

To contain the spread, vaccination camps, door-to-door surveys, and awareness sessions are being held by the city administration.

She reportedly filed the complaint at Tilunj in their hometown Vasai in Maharashtra.

"Today he (Aaftab) tried to kill me by suffocating me and he scares and blackmail's me that he will kill me, cut me up in pieces and throw me away.
Shraddha made another revelation in her complaint where she reportedly wrote that Aaftab's parents were aware that he tried to kill her. "His (Aaftab) parents are aware that he beats me and that he tried to kill me." She reportedly also mentioned that Aaftab's parents also knew that the duo had been living together. Shraddha allegedly wrote that she lived with Aaftab as they were supposed to get married anytime soon and had the blessings of his family. "Henceforth, I am not willing to live with him, so any kind of physical damage should be considered coming from him as he has been blackmailing me to kill me or hurt me whenever he sees me anywhere," she concluded in the complaint.

Responding over the matter, Maharashtra Police on Wednesday reportedly said that they had begun the investigation into the complaint filed by Shraddha however the case was closed after she gave a written statement to withdraw the case. Maybe she could have been saved had action been taken."

There is a battle for space in India's megacity Mumbai. It is India's most populous city. Now, climate change threatens to make the matter worst.

Battle for space in India's megacity: Climate change threatens to make the matter worse

The saga of a 28-year-old man named Aaftab Amin Poonawala in India’s capital Delhi who killed his live-in partner Shraddha Vikas Walker brutally in May is sure to send chills down anyone's spine. Delhi police is still investigating the case and in the latest development has reportedly moved a lower court seeking permission to conduct a polygraph test on the accused Aaftab Amin Poonawala. This comes after media reports citing police said Aaftab was misleading the investigation by his answers during investigation. The police reportedly said Aaftab had confessed of killing his live-in partner and dismembering her body into 35 pieces. Now, the court is likely to hear the plea on Tuesday, reported ANI news agency. The agency citing sources said Aaftab will be produced before the court once his five-day police custody expires.

Earlier multiple media reports said the court extended the police custody of the accused. Before the plea for polygraph test Delhi police had also sought to conduct narco test on Aaftab to investigate the gruesome killing, the reports added. According to reports, the court had allowed the application seeking permission for a narco analysis test on Aaftab. The accused was connected to the court proceedings through video conferencing. Aaftab was not physically produced before the court and his consent for the test was sought through video conferencing.

When came to light, the case shocked the nation. It still continues to do so we learn more each day about the gory details emerging out of the ongoing investigation. The 26-year-old Walker was allegedly strangled to death by Poonawala, who then chopped her body into 35 parts and bought a refrigerator to keep them. Over the span of two to three months the accused scattered Shraddha's body parts in the city’s Mehrauli forest and surrounding areas and reportedly said that he was “inspired” by the American crime show ‘Dexter’, in which the protagonist is a forensics expert who leads a double life as a serial killer.

As per reports, Poonawala and Walker met in Mumbai and started dating soon after. Shraddha's family had not approved of their inter-faith relationship. Media reports said the couple later moved to Delhi in the first week of May and were living at a friend’s house and later they rented an apartment in South Delhi’s Chhattarpur area. Aaftab during the interrogation said Walker reportedly began pressuring him for marriage when their relationship became tense which led to frequent fights.

On May 18, following an argument, Poonawala allegedly strangled Walker and dismembered her in order to dispose off the body. The accused had allegedly bought a 300-litre fridge to keep the victim's body in at least 35 pieces. According to police sources cited in media, Poonawala was a trained chef from a private institute in Mumbai where he was also reportedly trained in cutting meat. It supposedly took him two days to cut Walker’s body and Poonawala claims that he did it with a hacksaw with multiple blades.

However, the police are yet to recover the tool allegedly used to commit the crime. Furthermore, the accused claims that after “chopping the body”, he “washed the blood from them and stuffed them in some plastic bags.” Reportedly, all these plastic bags were then kept in the fridge.

The 28-year-old would then step out of the house around 2 am to dispose off the victim’s body one part at a time in the Mehrauli forest and surrounding areas, said media reports. The police reportedly said that during this time, Poonawala would burn incense sticks to keep the foul smell away and wipe the floor with detergent.

“After almost two three months, he discarded the head and the torso,” said a police officer to the Indian Express. Meanwhile, the accused reportedly had also researched human anatomy, Googled ways to clean human blood from the floor with some chemicals, and disposed off the stained clothes.

The local police have also claimed that the accused disclosed that weeks after the alleged murder he became active on the dating app Bumble through which he had met Walker, and even started dating another girl and had even visited the apartment where Walker had allegedly been killed.

The arrest was made after Walker’s father, Vikash Madan Walker, was led to Delhi from Maharashtra’s Palghar district after lodging a missing person complaint in Mumbai. During the interrogation, Aaftab reportedly confessed to the crime and the police had also recovered some bones from their rented apartment in Delhi.

He had also allegedly impersonated the victim on social media for weeks and spoken to her friends while continuing to live in the same flat. Walker’s father had come to Delhi after Shraddha’s friend had said that her phone had been switched off for weeks back in September, according to media reports. On November 8, Vikas Madan lodged a complaint at the Mehrauli police station after which the police filed a case of murder and got five-day custody of the accused who eventually confessed.
After India beat South Africa in the second and penultimate T20I, on Sunday evening (October 02) in Guwahati, Virat Kohli is likely to miss the Indore encounter on Tuesday (October 04). World in Pictures: RBI governor's press conference in Mumbai; Cars queueing at the Vaalimaa border

Last month, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch made an arrest acting on a tip which led to the discovery of an entire cell phone theft racket and uncovered how the city-based courier companies and villagers along the Indo-Bangladesh border were smuggling stolen cellphones across the border. By the end of August, the police were able to recover nearly 800 mobiles and arrest 21 people.

According to the sources, the high-end stolen phones would eventually be smuggled to countries like Nepal and Bangladesh while the old ones would keep circulating in India. In June 2022, constable Sambhaji Kolekar working at the Mumbai crime branch received a tip that a resident in the city was buying lost or stolen cellphones. Subsequently, a team was formed to verify how the operation was working.

Earlier this year, by July 15, the team was reportedly able to recover at least 490 smartphones and arrest the two accused. However, by the next month, the team would have recovered over 600 devices and arrested 12 people in connection with this racket. The police said that these phones “were stolen on buses or snatched by bike-borne perpetrators”.

The prime accused and his modus operandi

One of the perpetrators arrested in August was a villager from Tripura, a state close to the border, who told the police how the stolen phones were smuggled into Bangladesh. According to police sources, once the device is stolen from Mumbai its images and details are uploaded on a WhatsApp group which also has people from Bangladesh and Nepal. Subsequently, the selected phones are then packed in boxes and sent to Bangladesh.

According to the Mumbai police, one of the seven gang members and the prime accused of the racket is Ashfaq Ahmed Abdul Aziz Sheikh. “On the surface, he was a teacher at a Madarasa but in reality, he was a prime receiver of stolen phones. He was sending the phones to Nepal and Bangladesh through his contacts,” an officer told the media.

Sheikh was a part of 43 WhatsApp groups where he auctioned the handsets to people in Nepal and Bangladesh after changing the IMEI numbers. Reportedly, his wife and son live in Nepal where he has a bank account which had received Rs. 8 lakh from Nepal and Rs. 6 lakh from Bangladesh respectively, said the police. However, he and his gang members also bought stolen cell phones from mobile snatchers who operate across the financial capital.

“The boxes are then sent to a south Mumbai-based courier company, which has an Agartala, Tripura, address. The accused would collect the order in Agartala and pass it through the porous Indo-Bangladesh border, which is covered with jungles,” said the local police. They added that three people who would collect these stolen phones and sell them in Bangladesh have been identified.

The reason why these stolen cell phones are sold outside India is so that criminals do not have to spend money on erasing the IMEI number, which is traceable by law enforcement in the country. “Once the phone goes to another country, the IMEI number does not have much use for law enforcement agencies,” said the officer with knowledge of the matter.

Recent developments

The police have now managed to recover cell phones that are worth nearly a crore rupees. On the other hand, while the officers have identified the three culprits from Bangladesh they need additional evidence to hand over the case to Bangladeshi authorities for them to take action against these people, said the authorities.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) seized mobile phones that were worth nearly Rs. 40 lakh in West Bengal’s Malda district which is a part of the state that is close to the Bangladesh-India International Border (IB). Reportedly, the consignment seized on Friday had at least 359 cell phones.

The BSF intelligence had been tracking the movement of these smugglers when the troops saw about “10 to 12 suspected smugglers moving towards fencing with bundles when the force reached there…the smugglers fled with the help of thick darkness and bushes. After that the jawans launched a special search operation, during the search, eight bags were recovered in the pit of soil near fencing.”

The authorities with the BSF have indicated that the names of many Indian smugglers have also emerged and an FIR has been lodged against them at the local police station. The cell phones have also been handed over to the police for further investigation and legal action said the BSF.
