Fed up with noisy commuters? Well seems like Mumbai has a solution. BEST commuters in the city will now be restricted from speaking loudly on mobile phones while riding the bus. Listening to audio on a phone or watching a video too loud on the bus will be banned now, and carrying of earphones will be essential. The latest circular issued by the undertaking aims to keep the decibel levels in check.

Failure to abide by this rule can invite action under sections 38 and 112 of the Bombay Police Act. The rule was enforced through an internal notification on April 24. A copy of the same notification will be displayed on all the buses.

We have taken this step to avoid any such inconvenience to fellow passengers since BEST buses are public service vehicles. Apple Inc unveiled the design of its first retail store in India on Wednesday, as several people rushed to catch a glimpse of the store's black and yellow artwork inspired by Mumbai's renowned taxis.

The store is still barricaded and is expected to open this month, as per Reuters.

In 2020, the Cupertino, California-based corporation opened an online retail store in India, the world's second-largest smartphone market.

India is also becoming a manufacturing hub, with Taiwanese contract electronics makers Foxconn and Wistron Corp manufacturing several Apple products, including iPhones, in the country. Apple also intends to manufacture iPads and AirPods in India.

According to Counterpoint Research, Apple had a 4 per cent market share in India in 2022, behind Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo. Apple, on the other hand, reported a 35 per cent year-on-year increase in shipments, owing to high demand for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models.

Analysts anticipate that the Apple Store would improve Apple's brand image and customer loyalty in India, as well as draw more developers and creators to its ecosystem.

The announcement comes more than 20 years after the California-based company originally entered the Indian market through third-party dealers.

Mumbai, the country’s most vehicle-congested city, is witnessing a complete infrastructure revamp, as far as public transport is concerned. The aim -- reduce its infamous traffic jams and ease urban travel. The Maximum City recently got two Metro rail lines – Metro 2A and 7 – which were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 19 this year. Now, among other things, the city will get a six-lane viaduct over the Arabian Sea besides a 6-km tunnel under a forest. Mumbaikars will save a lot of time that they now spend crisscrossing the city and covering long distances.

Reportedly, his health deteriorated after coming back from a trip to Alibaug in Konkan. Post Mortem found traces of the H3N2 virus in his blood. However, the fatality is yet to be verified.

Talking to PTI about the current strain, Dr Vikas Deswal, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Medanta, Gurugram said the influenza virus is the most prevalent virus that affects our respiratory system.

He explained that the virus is present in three different types: A, B, and C.

"Among these, subtype A is the most commonly found. One subtype of the influenza A virus is H3N2, which produces symptoms similar to other flu viruses such as cough, fever, cold, sore throat, fatigue, muscle pain, and respiratory complications, especially in children under two years, the elderly, and those with other medical conditions," he said.

As per a PTI report, hospitals in New Delhi are witnessing a close to 150 per cent spike in cases of the H3N2 virus. Amid the spike, a fatality is being reported from the country's financial capital Mumbai. If verified, it will bring the nation's death toll due to the H3N2 virus to three. As per doctors, the influenza virus triggers symptoms like fever, cold and body aches, and in some cases causes a persistent cough that can make patients extremely weak. According to a Zee News report, in India, two Influenza 'A' type strains are behind this rise in flu cases. H3N2 has emerged as the dominant subtype of flu, it is followed by H1N1. Third person reportedly dies in Mumbai as H3N2 cases rise in India

Poor air quality for the last three months has been a cause of concern for citizens living in India’s financial capital, Mumbai. Its civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has blamed construction activity as the major cause for the rising bad air quality in the city.

To suggest dust control measures, BMC has formed a seven-member committee under the chairmanship of Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) Sanjeev Kumar. As per the directions given by Municipal Commissioner I S Chahal, the panel shall submit a report within seven days.

“There are around 5,000 sites where construction work is going on currently. The air quality in Mumbai region including the city is currently bad due to changes in the wind speed conditions combined with dust arising from various development and construction works, which are going on a large scale. In view of this, dust is the main factor responsible for air pollution,” said a senior BMC official.

India: Temperature hits record high in Mumbai, for second time in March

Sunday (March 12) marks the 30th anniversary of the 1993 serial bomb blasts in Bombay (Mumbai city's official name before 1995), which ripped apart India's financial hub and resulted in hundreds of fatalities in the hands of the dreaded terror attacks.

As India looks back at that terrible day 30 years ago, some wounds remain unhealed. But Mumbaikars (the local people of Mumbai) have confronted the fear with courage. There were a total of 12 terrorist bomb blasts on March 12, 1993, that occurred in the city in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

The blasts took the lives of 257 people and injured thousands of others.

It all started with an explosives-packed automobile which blew off in the basement of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) building at around 1:30 in the afternoon on March 12. The explosions shocked the city's most crowded places and lasted for a little over two hours, from 1:30 pm to 3:40 pm.

There was panic and confusion everywhere. The injured were rushed to the hospitals which were overcrowded in the aftermath of dozens of blasts on that fateful day, which later came to be known as “Black Friday”. Many still continue to battle the horrors of that day and the dark memories still haunt them.

Dawood Ibrahim, one of India's most sought criminals was the mastermind behind the 1993 Mumbai blasts. He is known to have founded the criminal syndicate D-Company in Bombay in the 1970s. Famous actors have played the notorious gangster in several films and television shows that were inspired by him. Many Indian films detail the 1993 terror blasts and ensuing police inquiry.

But Dawood Ibrahim and another gangster Tiger Memon, the 1993 explosion's masterminds, were able to elude the police and other enforcement agencies. Tiger Memon's real name is Ibrahim Mushtaq Abdul Razzaq Memon, but he is popularly known by his nickname.

Yakub Memon, the brother of Tiger Memon, was imprisoned in 1994. He was found guilty of conspiring, organising and funding training, and buying cars used for the bombings. He was convicted and awarded a death sentence in July 2007. After a gruelling 14 years of agony, the Supreme Court of India, in 2013, passed the final judgement on the case and upheld an earlier death sentence for Yakub Memon.

Yakub was hanged at Nagpur Prison on July 30, 2015, at 6:35 am IST.

But sadly, Yakub's brother Tiger Memon who is the prime suspect in the 1993 Bombay blasts and is believed to have conspired with Dawood Ibrahim, continues to remain at large till date.

The investigations into the explosion also purportedly exposed the D-Company’s nexus with Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

A total of 193 of the accused were detained by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch and the Special Task Force, which was led by the Central Bureau of Investigation. A total of 140 people were put on trial; however, 17 of them passed away during the course of the trial. 100 of the 123 suspects who faced trial were found guilty, while 23 were acquitted.

After the attacks, several of the conspirators who managed to escape India were apprehended and sent back.

Gangster Abu Salem was one of them who was extradited to India from Portugal. In 2017, the special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act court convicted six men, including Salem, for the blasts.

Salem is currently serving multiple life sentences in separate cases.

The death penalty was awarded to 12 of them. One more passed away from illness, while the Supreme Court of India reduced 10 more death sentences to life in prison.

1993 Mumbai blasts: 30 years on, scar of terror on Indian megacity still cuts deep

Citizens living in India’s financial capital city Mumbai are neither fit nor healthy, reveals civic body BMC's health department in a STEPS (STEP-wise approach to Surveillance) survey devised by World Health Organisation (WHO). Total 5,199 citizens were surveyed from August to December 2021.

The survey found every third of Mumbaikar has hypertension, while every fifth has diabetes and another 15 per cent are pre-diabetic. Approximately, 8% of the surveyed population have both diabetes and hypertension.

Mumbaikars consume almost double the daily recommended amount of salt. While WHO recommends only 5g salt to be consumed, respondents consume 8.6g of salt.

STEPS survey also showed that one in five respondents has raised levels of cholesterol — a marker of heart disease. Almost 37 per cent in the 18-69 age group have three out of six factors of heart disease.

To remain fit and healthy, doctors advise to do basic exercise and eat healthy like fruits, vegetables etc., but the survey found that 74 per cent of respondents reported no fitness related physical activity in their daily routine.

“We now have a proper health chart of people living in Mumbai. To control hypertension and diabetes, we have started screening people and putting them on treatment. Overweight and obesity are also other common issues that citizens are facing. Our survey found almost 12 per cent of respondents are obese. More women than men are obese in the city,” said Dr Daksha Shah, BMC's joint executive health officer.

Other survey highlights

- 12% consume tobacco daily

- Nine out of 10 Mumbaikars don' eat fruits or vegetables

- 15% surveyed population is pre-diabetic

The police in the Indian financial capital, Mumbai said that a man from Hyderabad was arrested after he called in a bomb threat at Google’s office in Pune, on late Sunday (February 12). The caller, later identified as Panayam Shivanand, alerted the tech giant’s office in Mumbai about placing an explosive device at the office of Google in Pune which prompted the city’s police and Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) to take action. The next morning, the Mumbai police said that the caller from Hyderabad claimed to be in an inebriated state and was later detained while the call turned out to be a hoax.

“Google company's office in Maharashtra's Pune city was briefly put on alert after it received a call about a bomb in the premises which later turned out to be a hoax,” said the police, on Monday. Google's office located at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai received the call at 7:54 pm (local time) on Sunday that a bomb had been placed in the tech giant’s Pune office, said the police.

Subsequently, the Pune police along with the BDDS checked Google office premises which is in the city’s Mundhwa area on the 11th floor but nothing suspicious was found, said the officials. The caller was later traced to the Indian state Telangana’s city of Hyderabad and detained by the city’s police. According to Amol Zende, DCP (Crime) Pune, the accused made the hoax call due to a dispute with his brother who works at the Google office based in Pune.

“The caller has been traced to Hyderabad and apprehended. He allegedly made the call in an inebriated condition,” said the Pune police official. An investigation into the incident is underway, said the authorities.
