There has been a significant rise in dengue cases in Mumbai, which has prompted the civic authorities in the west Indian city to resort to genome sequencing to identify the specific strain of the virus.

According to the data from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) cited by The Indian Express, a whopping 4,384 dengue cases were reported between January 1 and October 22 this year. There was a significant uptick of 3,675 cases during Monsoon rains, which the coastal city witnesses a considerable amount of each year. The rise was seen between July 1 and October 22.&nbsp;

Just last year, the city had seen 746 dengue cases between&nbsp;January and October. Before that, there were 876 cases between January and December 2021.

The BMC is now aiming to identify the specific dengue virus strain that may be behind the sudden surge in cases. The corporation will now conduct genome sequencing to zero in on the strain.

Genome sequencing is an advanced scientific method that yields important information about behaviour of the virus.

The BMC had previously conducted genome sequencing during the swine flu epidemic.&nbsp;

Genome sequencing yields information about genetic code in the RNA (ribonucleic acid). This enables detailed examination of virus properties.

Genome sequencing also gives information about the way a virus infects people. This comprehensive analysis will be carried out at BMC's Kasturba Hospital and it will involve analysis of samples of about 200 patients.&nbsp;

There are four strains of dengue that cause infection. These are DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4. Each of these strains has separate levels of virulence.

“The implementation of genome sequencing will provide valuable insights into the prevalent strain among the Mumbai population and help identify the existing sub-variants, if any, within the virus — offering a deeper understanding of the outbreak,” said an official from BMC as quoted by The Indian Express.

In a significant move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a big announcement that there will be no fireworks show during the World Cup 2023 matches in Mumbai and Delhi. It is to be noted that the decision has come in the aftermath of the poor air quality in both the major cities of the country. This has been a prevalent issue in both cities for quite some time and, hence, the board is wary of it and has put aside the fireworks display.

Jay Shah, the Secretary of BCCI,&nbsp;formally addressed the concern with the International Cricket Council (ICC)&nbsp;in a bid&nbsp;to prevent any such activity that could further harm the pollution levels.&nbsp;"BCCI is sensitive to environmental concerns. I took up the matter formally with the ICC and there won’t be any fireworks display in Mumbai and Delhi, which can add to the pollution level," Shah said. He further added, "The Board is committed to combating environmental issues and will always place the interest of our fans and stakeholders at the forefront."

There are as many as four games which are to be held in Mumbai (three) and Delhi (one). Mumbai will also host the first semi-final, on November 15. Thus, the BCCI has taken a much-needed step to ensure&nbsp;commitment to environmental concerns.&nbsp;

Talking about the World Cup, so far, a majority of the&nbsp;teams are alive in the semi-finals race with hosts India and South Africa very close to securing their berths. Meanwhile, New Zealand and Australia are expected to seal the next two slots but the likes of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands are still in the hunt -- although their chances are very low. Meanwhile, defending champions England have been a pale shadow of themselves and are languishing at the bottom whereas Bangladesh are at the penultimate spot and both sides still have a lot to play for, with the 2025 Champions Trophy slots up for grabs.&nbsp;

Goodbye 'Kaali Peeli'— Mumbai's iconic Padmini Premium taxis to go off road

World Cup 2023: 'Couldn’t get your breath...', Joe Root says England players struggled with Mumbai poor air

After making water free at all World Cup stadiums, spectators will be served free popcorn and cold drinks at the Wankhede Stadium. The&nbsp;Mumbai Cricket Association took the decision after the&nbsp;South Africa vs Bangladesh match on Tuesday (Oct 24).

MCA President Amol Kale said he proposed&nbsp;the idea which was accepted and that the association will bear all the costs associated with the exercise. The decision could potentially help draw massive crowds at the stadium, especially during the neutral matches.&nbsp;

“I had proposed to provide free one-time popcorn and cold drinks to all fans who turn up to watch World Cup games. It will be for non-hospitality areas. Once their tickets are stamped, free popcorn and coke will be given to each fan," Kale was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.&nbsp;

"The MCA will bear the cost of it. We will be starting this from India vs Sri Lanka game and it will be done till the semis. The MCA Apex members have agreed to the proposal,” he added.

The Wankhede Stadium has three matches left in its kitty for the World Cup. India take on Sri Lanka on November 2 before Afghanistan square up against Australia on November 7. The first semifinal will take place here as well, with the top team on the points table meeting the fourth-placed team.&nbsp;

Apart from the free popcorn and cold drinks, MCA will also unveil the statue of Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar on November 1. The statue will be unveiled&nbsp;in the area outside the MCA lounge where a roundabout has been created.&nbsp;

<h2>BCCI announces free water</h2>

On the opening day of the World Cup&nbsp;earlier this month, BCCI&nbsp;Secretary Jay Shah announced that spectators and fans will be provided with free mineral and packaged drinking water across all stadium venues in the country.&nbsp;

"I am proud to announce that we're providing FREE mineral and packaged drinking water for spectators at stadiums across India. Stay hydrated and enjoy the games! Let's create unforgettable memories during CWC 2023!" announced Jay Shah.&nbsp;

Despite being the centre of the cricketing world, the basic amenities at most Indian stadiums have remained dismal over the years. While stadiums in SENA countries encourage the public to have a good time, Indian spectators often find themselves manoeuvring a thousand regulations to watch a match. However, the recent announcements are expected to ease the spectators' experience.&nbsp;

The decision could potentially help draw massive crowds at the stadium, especially during the neutral matches. “I had proposed to provide free one-time popcorn and cold drinks to all fans who turn up to watch World Cup games. It will be for non-hospitality areas. Once their tickets are stamped, free popcorn and coke will be given to each fan," Kale was quoted as saying by The Indian Express. "The MCA will bear the cost of it. We will be starting this from India vs Sri Lanka game and it will be done till the semis. The MCA Apex members have agreed to the proposal,” he added. The Wankhede Stadium has three matches left in its kitty for the World Cup. India take on Sri Lanka on November 2 before Afghanistan square up against Australia on November 7. The first semifinal will take place here as well, with the top team on the points table meeting the fourth-placed team. Apart from the free popcorn and cold drinks, MCA will also unveil the statue of Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar on November 1. The statue will be unveiled in the area outside the MCA lounge where a roundabout has been created. A devastating fire erupted at a building in Mumbai's Goregaon in the early hours of Friday (Oct 6), resulting in the tragic loss of seven lives and leaving 40 individuals injured, local media reports said. The incident unfolded at around 3 am. The fire not only claimed lives and caused injuries but also engulfed several two-wheelers and cars parked nearby. There was a swift response by firefighters. Emergency responders promptly initiated firefighting operations upon arrival at the scene. Later, the injured victims were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals&nbsp;for medical attention.

<h2>Cause of the fire</h2>

As per local reports, the fire originated in the parking area of a seven-storey building. Locals reportedly said that the massive blaze is believed to have initially started with a cloth material that caught fire in the parking area. Subsequently, it spread to the entire vicinity.

The devastating fire was finally contained. Authorities started cooling operations to prevent any further potential fire. As the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, investigators are working to determine what led to the devastating tragedy.&nbsp;

The dozens of individuals who were injured in the fire have been moved to two different hospitals. Twenty-five&nbsp;people have been moved to HBT Trauma Care Hospital, while 15 are receiving treatment at Cooper Hospital.

Media reports said that two of the injured sustained serious injuries. The name of the building where the tragic incident took place is named Jai Bhavani, which is on Goregaon's MG road. The fire department declared the building as 'level 2'.&nbsp;

The fire engulfed everything that came in its way. Reports quoting officials said that the blaze spread through shops on the ground floor and also through the scrap material present there. Due to the massive blaze, people were left stuck on various floors including the terrace.

Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar reportedly said that the building was constructed in 2006 under the Slum Rehabilitation scheme.

Reports suggest that the building has no firefighting system in place, an essential system that could have potentially averted the tragic deaths. Moreover, the building lift was also old. Smoke willowed through the lift duct, reports added, while giving details of the ground situation.&nbsp;

The fire was extinguished at around&nbsp;6 am.

A shocking video from the city of Thane in the west Indian state of Maharashtra has surfaced on the internet, showing a 10-foot-long python dangling on the grills of a residential building's window. The now-viral video shows two men trying to rescue the giant snake from falling. One was standing inside the window trying to pull the snake inside, while the other was holding onto the grills outside the window, trying to catch the snake. A resident from a neighbouring building recorded the incident, which has gone viral on social media platforms like X and Instagram. An X user, @QueenofThane, posted the video on the social media platform with the caption, "A huge snake was spotted at a Thane Building. It was rescued by two brave persons." However, the exact date of the incident is not known. A man was allegedly engaged in the breeding of Burmese pythons in captivity, reported the Free Press Journal. However, his actions took an adverse turn. Other users speculated the nature of the rescue, saying the two men were not rescuing the snake but were trying to get rid of it. Another X user had a witty take on the incident. "Python getting stuck in Windows. Not a rare sight for programmers." The snake spotted in the video is believed to be an Albino Burmese python. The Burmese python, native to Asia, is one of the largest snake species in the world. It has a unique method of catching and eating food. These pythons are constrictors, snakes that kill their prey by coiling their bodies around them. The height of a Burmese python ranges from 9 to 20 feet, and they can weigh up to 200 pounds. People breed the Albino Burmese python, specifically for the colouration of their scales. They are rare species as only a few hatchlings have the distinctive "albino" colouring. Thus, they are extremely valuable for pet owners or reptile collectors. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

A new store by Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee in a rebuilt early 1900s house just a few blocks from the Reserve Bank of India's offices in Mumbai is a true indicator of the country's expanding wealth.

India's affluent market attracts international luxury retailers

A legitimate indicator of India’s increasing wealth is the new store by Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee in a refurbished building from the early 1900s, located just a few blocks from the Reserve Bank of India’s headquarters in Mumbai.

Sabyasachi is the newest luxury brand to relocate to south Mumbai with the launch of the four-story flagship store. Mumbai has been the centre of India’s financial services industry ever since the predecessor to the Bombay Stock Exchange started there in 1875 under a banyan tree. Hermes International, Christian Louboutin, and other brands have opened shops more recently, prepared to pay the area’s rising costs for space in historic properties and access to a growing upper-class population.

Anurag Mathur, a partner at Bain &amp; Company in New Delhi, told Bloomberg that the emergence of the high-net-worth individual sector in India was attracting luxury firms at a significant pace. He mentioned that the pandemic increased Indians’ quest for personal luxury while restricting travel, forcing them to purchase these items domestically. For luxury brands, he said, “there’s clearly a desire to look for a new frontier, and India very much, with its change, offers that.”

By 2027, around 1.66 million Indians are anticipated to have a net worth of above $1 million. According to Knight Frank’s Wealth Report, the group of people with $30 million in their bank accounts is expected to increase by approximately 60 per cent in the five years starting in 2022.

When Dior decided to hold its first runway show in India against Mumbai’s iconic Gateway of India, it was clear that foreign companies were paying attention. To entice local consumers and their wallets, the collection featured sequined gowns, vivid pink pops, and traditional Indian stitching on jackets, skirts, and bags.

Rich, traditional business families have historically flocked the area around the Gateway, which includes the The Taj Mahal Palace hotel. However, while commercial real estate has become discouragingly expensive for some financial services companies, some global brands still perceive its importance.

According to Karl Nagarwalla of Nagarwalla Estates, a company that has assisted labels like Hermes and Louboutin in establishing showrooms in the city, “the increased demand for luxury brands, the limited supply of properties available, and the fierce market competition have forced rentals higher.” For a 1,000 square foot property, the monthly rent for retail premises in the neighbourhood can range from $6,044 to $7,250, he added.

Many banks, mutual fund managers, and dealers have consequently relocated to new financial districts, such as the Bandra Kurla Complex, which is anchored by Bank of America and Citibank, as well as northern suburban neighbourhoods.

The new Sabyasachi store is prime example of how, many of the city’s heritage buildings have performed many functions over the course of their existence. Early in 2021, Indian City Properties refurbished the building, a Grade IIA heritage-designated structure with neoclassical architecture, and purchased it from HSBC Bank. According to Indian City Properties, it was created in 1913 by the architectural company Chambers &amp; Fritchley for the British Bank of the Middle East, one of the 37 banks that were located in the region that later came to be known as the bank district.

Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd., which acquired a 51 per cent ownership in the business with an all-cash acquisition in 2021, has helped Sabyasachi, noted for its lavish bridal dresses and jewellery, develop. According to records with the Bombay Stock Exchange, the investment aided Aditya Birla in its most recent quarter. Although the firm reported a loss for the three months ended in June, Sabysaschi’s income increased and sales have had “good traction” at the Mumbai store.

The addition of premium and luxury brands to Aditya Birla’s portfolio isn’t exclusive. Mukesh Ambani, the richest man in Asia, has his sights set on introducing luxury experiences to India. His Reliance Brands Ltd. has invested in MM Styles Ltd., the company that owns the name-brand clothing line that Manish Malhotra, a Bollywood stylist, runs. In addition, the conglomerate purchased a 52 per cent share in Ritu Kumar, another Indian fashion designer. The expansion of Reliance’s non-food sector is highlighted by its retail unit, which comprises fashion and lifestyle brands, which reported a 15 per cent increase in revenue year over year.

“The competitiveness is good — the market as a collective is growing. There’s enough and more opportunity for all the brands to have over the next decade or so,” Bloomberg quoted Bain's Mathur as saying. He further said that people began to question the purpose of their savings during and after the pandemic.

Luxury retailers are investing in India’s new wealthy. Here's why

The opposition alliance INDIA will meet in Mumbai for the third time on Thursday and Friday to discuss its tactics for the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. The alliance will most likely establish a coordination committee, a logo, and panels to develop the alliance's shared minimum strategy. Seat-sharing discussions and the establishment of a secretariat are also on the table to increase cooperation among all member parties. Furthermore, it is expected that more regional groups will join the alliance during the two-day conference.

As many as 63 leaders from 28 parties of the newly-minted opposition coalition of India Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) will be assembling in the western Indian city of Mumbai on Thursday(August 31) for a two-day meeting to hammer out differences and develop a coherent strategy. The meeting comes a little more than a month after the alliance parties met in Bengaluru to show a singular, strong front. Thursday's meeting, however, is the group's first effort at moving beyond symbolism and resolving the divisive issues currently plaguing the alliance. According to reports, the alliance is likely to unveil a common logo as well as chalk a mega public outreach programme. The grouping and its leaders might also brainstorm ideas about a social media strategy, fix dates and venues for the next meeting and arrive at a common ground on contentious issues such as the use of EVMs (Electronic Voting Machine). Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad hinted that the decision to name a convener for the bloc was likely to be made on the second day of the meeting, despite a section of the bloc feeling there is no need for a convener right now. The fault lines may have started to emerge even before the meeting. A Congress social media post on the meeting featured Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi at the centre while other leaders were omitted. If the opposition manages to stick the landing by addressing the thorny issues, then only it might stand a chance to dethrone the BJP government, argue experts. The alliance, born out of political conveniences as well as desperation, is possibly the last-ditch attempt by the opposition to cobble together a grouping that can halt the charging juggernaut of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
