An accountant employed with a private company allegedly stole ₹1.08 crore (INR 10.8 million) from his company's account in Mumbai. However, he lost all the loot money by investing it in an insurance scheme, which turned out to be a scam.

Sudhir Mapuskar has been an employee of Zaina Electric and Mechanic Works since 1992. He gained the trust of the company over three decades and was authorised to receive OTPs on his cellphone for the company's banking transactions. However, he took advantage of this trust and transferred large sums of money from three of the company's bank accounts to his accounts.

This information is based on the chargesheet filed by officials of Azad Maidan police station. Eventually, Mapuskar, who was originally accused of the theft, became a victim himself

The chargesheet states, "The report of a forensic audit by the company’s chartered accountant revealed that Rs 1.08 crore had been fraudulently transferred between May 2016 and March 2023."

The company's proprietor, Fali Dadi Palkhiwala, filed a police complaint alleging that the accountant had misappropriated funds intended for employees' provident fund, salaries, and taxes. The police claimed that the arrested accountant had confessed to the crime.

According to the police, he was approached by four individuals in 2021 who presented him with a 'double-your-money' scheme. He was enticed by the lucrative offer and used company funds.

"Of course, this had a cascading effect with employees' salaries going unpaid for a while," a police officer told Times Of India. Out of the total amount of ₹1.08 crore, the accountant had failed to pay ₹67 lakh that was due under the 'ROC' category, ₹2 lakh under income tax, ₹48.06 lakh under goods and services tax, ₹4.93 lakh under employee's provident fund, and ₹4.75 lakh that was supposed to be paid as staff salaries.

The accountant has admitted that he had devised a plan to return the amount he had unlawfully borrowed back to its rightful place once he had received his gains from the insurance scheme. The police have frozen at least 15 bank accounts that the accountant had used while misappropriating the company's funds, according to the police statement.

On Tuesday (March 12) Mumbai strengthened its grip on Day 3 of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2023-24 final versus Vidarbha at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Resuming the day at 141-2, with an overall lead of 260, the 41-time Ranji champions Mumbai rode on captain Ajinkya Rahane's 73, Musheer Khan's 136 and Shreyas Iyer's blistering 95 to take their lead beyond the 500-run mark as Vidarbha are on the mat in the summit clash. Musheer, who resumed the day at 51*, continued his rich vein of form and slammed a magnificent hundred to break Sachin Tendulkar's 29-year-long record.

Musheer, Test cricketer Sarfaraz Khan's younger brother, stitched a brilliant 130-run third-wicket stand with Rahane and added another 168 for the fourth-wicket with Iyer to bolster his side's position and reach the three-figures mark. With this, he became the youngest Mumbai batter to score a hundred in the Ranji final. Before this, Sachin Tendulkar held this record when he slammed a century in the final of the 1994/95 season. Back then, Tendulkar hit two successive tons in the finale played between Mumbai and Punjab. He held the record for over two decades before Musheer finally broke it on Tuesday, at the age of 19 years and 14 days.

India all-rounder Shardul Thakur has called for more breaks between the games in the premier domestic first-class tournament Ranji Trophy. Thakur made the comments after rescuing his Ranji side Mumbai with a century in the semi-final against Tamil Nadu on Sunday (March 3).

"If boys keep playing like this for two more seasons, there will be a lot of injuries across the country," Thakur said after coming in to bat with Mumbai at 106/6 and scoring 109 to take his side to 290 by the time he became the ninth wicket to fall. Thanks to Thakur's maiden first-class hundred, Mumbai were 144 runs ahead of Tamil Nadu's 146 by the time he went back to the dressing room.

Maratha Quota Stir: Manoj Jarange reaches Mumbai with thousands of supporters

Tens of thousands of protesters demanding reservations for the Maratha community under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category in the Indian state of Maharashtra are currently en route to Mumbai and will reach the country’s financial capital, on Thursday (Jan 25) amid Republic Day celebrations.

Protests in Mumbai

Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil kickstarted the recent protest march demanding reservation for the Maratha community and may begin an indefinite hunger strike on Friday (Jan 26). He has also reportedly asked his supporters to prepare for a long sit-in protest in the city.

According to organisers, tens of thousands of people are expected to join the march which they describe as one of the biggest in the Indian state’s history. While Jarange-Patil has claimed more than two crore (20 million) people are expected to come to Mumbai in a show of support.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai police have imposed section 144 of the CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) till February 6 in the city ahead of Republic Day celebrations. In line with this, a gathering of five or more people and any kind of a procession in the financial capital is banned.

The Mumbai police have also reportedly denied permission for the protesters to gather at Azad Maidan and instead offered a rally ground in Navi Mumbai's Kharghar.

On Thursday (Jan 25), police and personnel from the Rapid Action Force and the bomb disposal squad were seen stationed at one of the entry points to the city.

Media reports citing march organisers said Jarange-Patil will start his indefinite hunger strike on January 26 in Mumbai at Azad Maidan.

Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court, on Wednesday, refused to issue an order preventing Jarange-Patil from entering the city.

The petition filed by activist Gunratna Sadavarte said Jarange-Patil, accompanied by crores of his followers, posed a logistical challenge for Mumbai and could cause law and order problems.

What are they demanding?

Maratha reservation supporters led by Jarange-Patil have sought the inclusion of all Marathas under the OBC category by giving them Kunbi sub-caste certificates.

Marathas, who form an estimated 33 per cent of the state’s population, have periodically protested for reservations in government jobs and educational institutions of the state.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, on Wednesday (Jan 24) said he is “positive” towards Jarange-Patil’s demands and will “ensure the reservation is legally viable.” He added, “I appeal to Jarange-Patil to stop the agitation.”

Earlier in January, faced with the latest round of protests, the Maharashtra government filed a curative petition asking the Supreme Court to reconsider its 2021 decision of striking down the quota given to Marathas under the ‘socially and educationally backward class’ after they deemed it “unconstitutional”.

On Wednesday, the state government granted a second extension to a committee formed to finalise the methodology to grant Kunbi status to Marathas, till February 29.

The Maharashtra government has said that it needs time to figure out the legality of the reservation for all Marathas while urging Jarange-Patil to call off the agitation. However, the activist has insisted on continuing till the quota was announced.

Over a decade or so there has been a lot of back and forth between the state government and the courts. Initially, the Maharashtra government had granted a 16 per cent reservation to the community by passing an act, in 2018, following widespread protests.

However, the validity of the legislation was challenged in the Bombay High Court, which later upheld the decision but slashed the quota to 13 per cent and 12 per cent in education and jobs, respectively. In 2021, the apex court quashed it entirely.
