A Mumbai-bound Indigo flight was delayed for over six hours after a passenger raised an alarm over a suspicious text message received by a fellow passenger that she had noticed.

According to reports, the incident happened in India’s southern Mangaluru city on Sunday. The woman claimed that she accidentally peeked into the message on the man’s phone and saw the ‘you are a bomber’ on it, following which she raised an alarm and alerted the cabin crew.

The Air Traffic Controller was informed of the matter and the flight was ordered to return to the bay, following which the passengers deboarded the plane and a thorough security check was conducted.

It was later revealed that the message was just a hoax, as the man was busy chatting with his friend—a girl—who was to catch another flight for Bengaluru from the same airport.

The authorities then checked the passengers' baggage again, following which they were allowed to re-board the flight. The plane flight left by 5pm with 185 passengers, excluding the man who received the message, onboard.

While the man was not allowed to take the flight, his friend was called into questioning and as a result she missed her scheduled flight.

Speaking to the Times of India newspaper, Mangaluru police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said that no complaint was filed because the matter was a personal chat between two friends.

Legendary Sachin Tendulkar's son Arjun is all set to leave Mumbai and in all likelihood will ply his trade for south-western neighbours Goa in the next domestic season. The 22-year-old left-arm pacer, who has also been a part of IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, have played two games for Mumbai, during the 2020-21 edition of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Haryana and Puducherry respectively.

It has been learnt that Tendulkar junior has already applied for No Objection Certificate (NoC) from his home association MCA.

"Getting maximum game time on the ground is important for Arjun at this juncture of his career. We believe that the shift will improve the probability of Arjun featuring in more competitive matches. He is embarking on a new phase of his cricketing career," SRT Sports Management said in a statement.

Tendulkar has played two 'Tests' for the India U-19 against Sri Lanka, three summers back and has featured in the Mumbai probables for the white ball leg of the domestic season even this time.

For Tendulkar, the biggest disappointment has been getting dropped from the Mumbai squad this season without being given a chance to prove his mettle. People who have monitored his progress feel that the youngster has the right attitude and work ethic but does need consistent game time to showcase what he is capable of.

He has recently been a part of Mumbai Indians' developmental squad that played a lot of T20 games in England.
The likes of Kumar Kartikeya, Anmolpreet Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Dewald Brevis were all part of the squad that played T20 games against club sides.

A senior Goa Cricket Association (GCA) did acknowledge that Tendulkar junior is expected to be considered among state's pre-season probables.

"We have been looking out for left-hand bowling talent as also add players to the middle order with multiple skills. In this context, we invited Arjun Tendulkar to join the Goa side. We will be playing pre-season trial-matches (white ball) and he will be playing in those games. The selectors will then take a call based on his performance," Goa CA president Suraj Lotlikar told PTI.

Social media and news websites are abuzz with the Aarey forest, again. The last time, the forest was in news, it was 2019 when the then Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray had relocated the proposed Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro Line 3 depot in the area to Kanjurmarg, east of Aarey, a day after assuming power. This move had led to a series of events which ultimately resulted in a stay on the car shed at Kanjurmarg and a cost escalation of roughly over ₹1000 crores on the conservation side.

But with the fall of the Thackerays and the re-entry of the BJP-led government, the ex-CM and the present Deputy CM, Devendra Fadnavis announced the relocation of the metro car shed back to Aarey. This has led to the resurrection of #SaveAarey protests, a citizen-led movement aimed at protecting the 32,000-acre Aarey Colony forests, a sensitive ecology home to various endangered plant and animal species, including leopards and around 27 tribal hamlets.

I was recently in Mumbai and to be frank, I love the city. It has an unforgettable welcoming charm to it. Though I have been living in Delhi-NCR for quite a while now, Mumbai does feel like a dreamy destination. However, I couldn’t help but notice the two things that the city is in a grave shortage of, trees and transportation. Apart from a few areas in the city, the foliage seems like a luxury and so does a safe public transportation system. The city’s traffic is slow and prone to traffic and therefore, the best way to get around it for tourists like me and millions of others is the famed Mumbai Local.

I was hoping to catch a local from Dadar to Chembur at 7:30 in the evening, it was a bad idea. Crowded or congested would be an understatement for the Local in front of me. Passengers clung onto the edges of the train, nearly a foot out of the local’s door, while the station itself was filled to its brim, so much so that people chose to hop on from one station to another on tracks while avoiding the jampacked foot-over bridges. I have been swarmed by a tsunami of people in the Delhi Metro’s Blue line and at Rajiv Chowk during the most crowded hours but nothing beats the colossal overload that Mumbai Local has to face daily.

The Mumbai Local network, by all means, is at the peak of its efficiency. This can be gauged by the fact that though a single 12-car local is authorised to carry 1174 passengers, these trains carry up to 6000 people at a typical peak hour. The Locals have an average waiting time of three minutes and as per Western Railways, the punctuality of the system was over 99% in 2021. However, this consistency just isn’t enough. An RTI in 2015 revealed that over 25,000 people fell out of overcrowded locals since 2005, out of these nearly 7,000 had died following the fall. On average, the city sees around seven to eight deaths due to overcrowded locals daily. And pretty much no one can forget the heart-wrenching stampede at Prabhadevi station in 2017.

Yes, the construction of the metro car shed in Aarey will result in the cutting down of trees and will certainly threaten the sensitive ecology of the area. But in this debate of environment vs development, we also need to think about the lives of millions of passengers on the overcrowded Mumbai Locals that are forced to play with their lives every day just to make ends meet. Dissent and disagreements have been a part of major infrastructure projects worldwide, but is hindering the growth of such projects, the way forward? From the Delhi Metro to the London Underground, and the New York Subway all these systems which today manage to keep thousands, if not millions of cars off the streets were once protested against. As per the Japan International Cooperation Association, the Delhi Metro alone has been able to take 1.2 lakh cars off the Delhi roads, thereby saving 6.3 lakh tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Our future generations deserve fresh air and a clean environment, they deserve trees and forests but they also deserve safe public transportation. Instead of no development at all, isn’t sustainable development a better way? Saving our environment is our duty as citizens and a metro system is a step exactly towards that goal. We can romanticise the Mumbai Local all we want but in reality, it is crushingly overloaded with the hopes and dreams of nearly 80 lakh Mumbaikars, daily.

In a bizarre incident, police in India’s western Mumbai city have recovered 500-gram gold worth Rs 500,000 (US $6,400) from the clutches of rats in a drain.

The incident came to light when a 45-year-old woman, who works as domestic help, told the police that she lost her bag of jewellery when she was on her way to mortgage her gold to pay off a loan that was taken for her daughter’s wedding.

According to the victim, Sundari Planibel, the incident took place at Goregaon's Gokuldham Colony. After seeing children collecting scraps, she gave food wrapped in the same bag that had her gold.

It was only when she reached the bank that she realised her mistake, following which Planibel tried looking for the children in the same area, but couldn't find them.

The 45-year-old woman then approached the police who, with help of local residents, managed to trace the children whom the woman gave her bag.

The children told the police that they threw the bag at a garbage dump as they found the food to be too dry. However, the police couldn’t spot the jewellery on the spot.

The cops then checked CCTV footage which showed a few rats taking the bag of gold from the garbage dump to a gutter, sub-inspector SI C Gharge told ANI news agency.

The police then pried open the grill over the sewer and found the bag, with all the jewellery inside it. It was returned to the complainant on Thursday morning.

A study published in a scientific journal has rung alarm bells for Indian megacity Mumbai. The study says that the coastal city is sinking into the sea. And though the rate of 2 mm per year may seem small, the report has recommended that urgent remedial measures should be taken in order to avoid increased flooding in future.

The study has been published in Geophysical Research Letters journal. It said that sinking of Mumbai city was due to a phenomenon called land subsidence. The study, carried out by researchers at University of Rhode Island is titled Subsidence in Coastal Cities Throughout the World Observed by InSAR. It studied land subsidence in 99 countries in the world.

It found that Tianjin in China was the fastest sinking city in the world. The city is sinking at the rate of 5 cm per year.

Land subsidence is downward, vertical movement of the earth. Land subsidence is permanent and irreversible. This is why it is critical to prevent it rather than try for measures afterwards.

The study has found that Tianjin is the fastest sinking city in the world. These are the cities that find place on the list next.

Semarang (3.96cm per year) and Jakarta (3.44cm per year) in Indonesia, Shanghai (2.94cm year) in China, and Ho Chi Minh (2.81mm per year) and Hanoi (2.44cm per year) in Vietnam.

Mumbai is sinking in the sea, says a study

Ranji Trophy knockouts have led to plenty of action on the 22-yard cricket strip. While Bengal broke a 129-year-old record after nine of their batters scored fifty-plus in their quarter-final clash versus Jharkhand, now another major record has been broken in the Mumbai-Uttarakhand clash. The Prithvi Shaw-led Mumbai team hammered Uttarakhand by a whopping 725-run margin to achieve the biggest-ever win (by runs) in first-class cricket.

Riding on mammoth a double century and ton from Suved Parkar and Sarfaraz Khan, respectively, Mumbai posted 647 for 8 declare in their first innings after batting first. In reply, Uttarakhand batters only managed a paltry 114 courtesy of spinner Shams Mulani's five-fer. In their second essay, Mumbai rode on Yashasvi Jaiswal's 103 to declare at 261 for 3, setting up a mammoth 795-run target as Uttarakhand batters continued to fall flat. This time around, Uttarakhand folded for 69, losing the clash by a humongous margin.

A much-loved street dessert from Mumbai (formerly Bombay) has earned a place in finals of competition of puddings. Well that is actually a thing in the run up to UK Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The celebrations will mark the Queen's 70 years on the throne. The dessert which will eventually win the pudding contest will play a part in platinum jubilee celebrations.

There are five desserts in the final of the contest. These have been made by amateur bakers.

One among them is Shabnam Russo whose Rose Falooda Cake is vying for the top spot in the contest. Shabnam is in her late 30s and is a skincare expert from North London.

Falooda is a characteristic Mumbai dessert that resembles a milkshake but is rich with other additions like sweet noodles, sweet basil seeds, dry fruits and nuts. There are many variations of Falooda and it can even be paired with an ice-cream. Falooda is one of Mumbaiites' go-to drink especially in summer months to beat the heat.

Shabnam Russo's Rose Falooda Cake appears a bit removed from the quintessential Mumbai dessert but incorporates elements of it. She describes her creation as 'a humble cake of the people'

'My falooda cake is a humble cake of the people and by qualifying, I felt I was representing people from all walks of life, their struggles, journeys, their hopes and aspirations," she said. She was quoted by Daily Mail.

'I hope it's inspiration for anyone really, that you can achieve anything if you just believe in yourself,' she added.

India is likely to receive normal monsoon rains this year, the state-run weather office said on Thursday, raising prospects of higher farm and general growth in Asia's third-biggest economy.

The rains, which usually lash the southern tip of Kerala state around June 1 and retreat by September, are expected to be 99 per cent of the long-term average this year, the India Meteorological Department said in a statement.

New Delhi defines average, or normal, rainfall as ranging between 96 per cent and 104 per cent of a 50-year average of 87 cm (35 inches)for the four-month season beginning in June.

"The encouraging forecast of a normal monsoon in 2022, coupled with healthy reservoir levels in all regions, augurs well for a timely onset of summer crop sowing," said Aditi Nayar, chief economist at rating agency ICRA, the Indian arm of Moody's.

The monsoon is crucial for the $2.7-trillion economy, as it brings nearly 75 per cent of the rain needed by farms, besides replenishing reservoirs and aquifers.

Key cotton, soybean and sugarcane growing regions in northern parts of peninsular India, central India, the foothills of the Himalayas and some northwestern areas are likely to get normal to above normal seasonal rainfall, the IMD said.
