Moroccan electricians work to bring back power to quake-hit villages

At least 20,000 people are estimated to have died in Libya after two dams collapsed near the port city of Derna. In Morocco, nearly 3000 people died after a 6.8 magnitude quake shook the country late on Sept 8. Who is to be blamed? The twin disasters? or the tragic unpreparedness? Listen in to Vikram Chandra.

On Thursday, nearly a week after the disaster, villagers in some of the most remote regions affected by Morocco's earthquake were still residing in temporary tents and depending on donkeys to transport essential supplies. In a statement on Thursday, the royal palace stated that 50,000 homes were reported to have been destroyed by the earthquake and that it would offer shelter and $3,000 to impacted families.

No nod to French quake aid offers by Moroccan King amid diplomatic tensions

The Moroccan military and rescue teams from multiple nations were struggling Monday to reach remote villages devastated by Friday's earthquake that destroyed infrastructure, crumbled buildings, and killed more than 2,800 people, a figure that's likely to rise as hopes of finding survivors fade.

Morocco Ambassador Maliki welcomes India's offer of assistance after deadly earthquake

<p>The devastating Morocco earthquake has hit headlines across the world. The huge death toll and injuries have made countries send aid to the north African nation for rescue and salvage effort. It is estimated that effects of the calamity will continue to persist for months.</p>

<p>Social media is awash with videos in Morocco capturing the exact moments of the tremors and the wild panic that ensued, with people running everywhere.</p>

<p>Another such video is being shared widely on social media. The video is of a man escaping death within a span of less than a second.</p>

<p>The video does not startle you at the very beginning. It appears a footage of just another breezy evening with an empty alleyway. Soon there is a movement.</p>

<p>A man can be seen casually strolling and entering the picture from one end of the alley. The casual stroll quickly become a panicked astonishment as the earthquake, strongest in years, appears to strike. The man contniues his movement forward but all air of casualness is gone and he breaks into a wild run.</p>

<p>To the viewers' horror, a building just feets behind the man collapses like a house of cards, missing him by mere inches. Had he decided to start running half a second later, the result would have been tragic.</p>

The devastating Morocco earthquake has hit headlines across the world. The huge death toll and injuries have made countries send aid to the north African nation for rescue and salvage effort. It is estimated that effects of the calamity will continue to persist for months. Social media is awash with videos in Morocco capturing the exact moments of the tremors and the wild panic that ensued, with people running everywhere. Another such video is being shared widely on social media. The video is of a man escaping death within a span of less than a second. The video does not startle you at the very beginning. It appears a footage of just another breezy evening with an empty alleyway. Soon there is a movement. A man can be seen casually strolling and entering the picture from one end of the alley. The casual stroll quickly become a panicked astonishment as the earthquake, strongest in years, appears to strike. The man contniues his movement forward but all air of casualness is gone and he breaks into a wild run. To the viewers' horror, a building just feets behind the man collapses like a house of cards, missing him by mere inches. Had he decided to start running half a second later, the result would have been tragic. Morning brief: 9/11 attacks 22nd anniversary, India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, and more

Moroccan rescue teams search for victims under the rubble in devastated Talat N'Yaaqoub village in the Atlas mountains. The earthquake killed at least 2,122 people, injured more than 2,400 others, and flattened entire villages.

Morocco Earthquake: International aid teams arrive on the quake hit spot

<p>Spain on Sunday (September 10) sent 86 rescuers and eight search dogs to Morocco to help in the rescue effort following the devastating earthquake that has so far resulted in more than 2100 deaths. Spain responded to a formal request from Morocco.</p>

<p>A military plane took off on Sunday morning from a base in Zaragoza, a city in northwestern Spain with 56 rescuers and four search dogs bound for Marrakesh, said the Spanish defence ministry.</p>

<p>Their mission is to "help in the search and rescue of survivors of the devastating earthquake suffered in our neighbouring country".&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rescue teams are from Spain's Military Emergencies Unit (UME). It is a body of the armed forces created to intervene quickly in case of emergencies such as forest fires, floods, and earthquakes.</p>

<p>The teams have tools to drill and cut reinforced concrete. These may come in handy while rescuing people stuck under debris from collapsed buildings. The teams also have means to detect toxic or explosive substances which will ensure that rescue teams work in safety</p>

<p>Another military plane took off from a base in Torrejon de Ardoz near Madrid with 30 rescuers and four search dogs, said the interior ministry.</p>

<p>"We will send whatever is needed because everyone knows that these first hours are key, especially if there are people buried under rubble," Defence Minister Margarita Robles told Spanish public television.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier Sunday, Spain's Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said Spanish aid to Morocco was a sign of solidarity.</p>

<p>"It is a sign of Spanish solidarity and of the sense of friendship that unites the people of Spain with the people of Morocco," he told Catalunya Radio.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that he received a phone call from his Moroccan counterpart in the early hours of Sunday requesting aid.</p>

<p>Other countries like the United States and France have offered humanitarian aid.</p>

Morocco earthquake: Video shows moment wedding is interrupted by powerful temblor

<p>Marrakesh's ancient medina was nearly empty on Sunday after a deadly earthquake that hit Morocco, but it did not deter some tourists who told AFP they chose to stay on.</p>

<p>Tourism is the lifeblood of the North African country's economy, and Marrakesh is its main attraction.</p>

<p>Friday's devastating quake which killed over 2,000 people has also spurred fears of a repeat of the tourism slump suffered during the Covid pandemic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some visitors, however, were in no rush to leave.</p>

<p>"We're not going to let the earthquake ruin everything," said 35-year-old Kirian Ficher from Germany who was on a guided tour of the historic city.</p>

<p>"There was no warning of any major risk, so we stuck to our plans."</p>

<p>Just four people were on the tour, however, and all had been evacuated from their rooms as the earthquake hit late on Friday at 11:11 pm (2211 GMT).</p>

<p>The 6.8-magnitude quake was the strongest ever to hit Morocco and wiped out entire villages in the hills of the Atlas Mountains southwest of Marrakesh.</p>

<p>"We're still a bit hesitant about whether to leave," said tourist Dominik Huber, 26.</p>

<p>"But it seems relatively safe. And also, by staying we are contributing in a small way to supporting the Moroccans."</p>

<p>The small group stood outside the imposing studded wooden doors of the Bahia Palace, a top tourist attraction built in the 1860s which is now closed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It has suffered some damage, with smashed green-glazed terracotta tiles on the ground.</p>

<p>Jagged cracks have appeared in the rose-coloured walls of buildings in nearby streets, and some houses are now just piles of rubble.</p>

<p>Guide Abderrazzaq Ouled assured the group that their tour of the city founded nearly 1,000 years ago can still go ahead.</p>

<p>"Most of the visit is still feasible," he said.</p>

<p><strong>- Changed city -</strong><br />
<br />
Not far away, three Italians asked police officers whether attractions in the city -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site -- were still open to visitors.</p>

<p>They too decided to stay, as did a couple sipping tea in the shade of a tiled terrace, and a lady in flip-flops and straw hat haggling in the one of the few shops still open for a leather bag she had her eye on.</p>

<p>In Marrakesh's famous Jemaa el-Fna square, perfume and fruit juice vendors have replaced residents who spent the night in the open, wrapped in blankets, because their homes have been damaged or destroyed.</p>

<p>On Saturday, the SETO group which includes around 70 of France's main tour operators said that as far as it was aware, none of its clients in Marrakesh had suffered because of the earthquake.</p>

<p>But the city itself has changed, its frenzied activity gone.</p>

<p>The human toll of the tragedy continues to mount. Already 2,012 deaths have been recorded and 2,059 people have been injured, mostly in rural mountainous areas southwest of Marrakesh.</p>

<p>The country's Tourism Observatory is concerned that the economic consequences of the disaster may negate the upturn in visitor numbers recorded this year.</p>

<p><strong>- 'Entire groups cancelled' -</strong></p>

<p>The observatory recorded some 6.5 million tourists in Morocco in the first half of 2023, mainly from Western Europe and the United States, an increase of 92 per cent compared with the same period last year.</p>

<p>Marrakesh is Morocco's main magnet for tourists, with more than 4.3 million visitors, the observatory's figures show.</p>

<p>However, the economic effects of the quake are already being felt by some tourism professionals in the city.</p>

<p>"Entire tour groups have already cancelled, fearing aftershocks," said 56-year-old Daehmen Ziani who runs a hammam.</p>

<p>"The medina is the pride and soul of Marrakesh, and tourism accounts for 99 per cent of our income. If that dies, then everything will stop" as it did during Covid, Ziani said, speaking on the marble steps of his now deserted business.</p>

<p>Morocco imposed a strict lockdown in spring 2020 because of the pandemic, and its tourism industry ground to a halt.<br />
<br />
"Then, we could only cross our fingers and hope that such a disastrous time doesn't happen again," Ziani added.</p>

Marrakesh is Morocco's main magnet for tourists, with more than 4.3 million visitors, the observatory's figures show. However, the economic effects of the quake are already being felt by some tourism professionals in the city. "Entire tour groups have already cancelled, fearing aftershocks," said 56-year-old Daehmen Ziani who runs a hammam. "The medina is the pride and soul of Marrakesh, and tourism accounts for 99 per cent of our income. If that dies, then everything will stop" as it did during Covid, Ziani said, speaking on the marble steps of his now deserted business. Morocco imposed a strict lockdown in spring 2020 because of the pandemic, and its tourism industry ground to a halt. "Then, we could only cross our fingers and hope that such a disastrous time doesn't happen again," Ziani added.

Morocco earthquake: More than 2,000 killed in deadliest seismic disaster in a century

<p>A day after unanimous adoption of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/g20-leaders-reach-consensus-new-delhi-leaders-declaration-adopted-634091">New Delhi leaders' declaration</a>&nbsp;at New Delhi G-20 summit, the photographic symbolism in the capital of world's largest democracy began reigning supreme. The leaders of the nations reached Rajghat, the resting place of the flagbearer of non-violence Mahatma Gandhi, to pay homage to India's father of nation and legendary figure of Indian and global history. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak visited Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple at the banks of River Yamuna along with his wife Akshata Murthy on a day when Delhi has been particularly rainy to dispense pleasant air emblematic to India's successful G20 stewardship that the West was particularly skeptical about.&nbsp;</p>
