Two tourists have been shot dead by the Algerian coastguard while holidaying in Morocco. Reportedly, the tourists, who held dual French-Moroccan nationality, had unintentionally entered Algerian waters on jet skis.

As per BBC, they were part of a group of four who had set off on their journey from the Moroccan resort of Saidia.

Meanwhile, a third member of the group has been apprehended by the coastguard, which regularly patrols the closed border between Algeria and Morocco.

Outrage and anger

News website Le360 has identified the two victims as Bilal Kissi and Abdelali Merchouer.

The French-Moroccan dual nationals came under fire after taking a wrong turn off the beach resort of Saidia on Morocco's northeast tip, and straying across the maritime border between the two countries, reported Le360, citing a witness.

As per the news website, the third man who was arrested by the Algerian coastguard is Smail Snabe, also a French-Moroccan national. He was made to appear before a prosecutor on Wednesday, reported Le360.

The fatal shooting incident has caused outrage in Morocco, after a fisherman posted a distressing video capturing one of the victims' lifeless bodies floating at sea.

Among the group, Mohamed Kissi, as per AFP, was the sole survivor.

Recalling the incident, Mohamed said, "We got lost, but we kept going until we found ourselves in Algeria."

The man whose brother Bilal was killed in the shooting said that the group had also run out of fuel, they realised they were in Algeria "because a black Algerian dinghy came towards us" and those on board "fired at us".

"Thank God I wasn't hit, but they killed my brother and my friend," he added.

He refuted any suggestion that they were attempting to flee upon being detected by the coastguard and instead asserted that his brother had tried to talk to the authorities before the fatal shots were fired.

"They arrested my other friend. Five bullets hit my brother and my friend. My other friend was hit by a bullet."

Mohamed was picked up by the Moroccan navy and taken back to Saidia marina.

Morocco-Algeria tensions

Owing to Morocco's territorial claims over the disputed Western Sahara region, the relationship between these two nations has been strained for a long time.

The border separating Algeria and Morocco was sealed in 1994 due to security concerns, reports AFP.

The vehicle, back in March, had slammed into a tree after the driver lost control in the rural town of Brachoua, local officials said at the time. It was a fairytale result for Morocco, who have rebounded from a humiliating 6-0 drubbing on their debut against Germany with wins over South Korea and Colombia. In front of 17,342 fans, the sole goal arrived moments before half-time when Ibtissam Jraidi was impeded in the box by a clumsy Daniela Arias. Captain Ghizlane Chebbak's penalty kick was spectacularly saved by lunging goalkeeper Catalina Perez, who dived to her left. But Sakina Ouzraoui pounced on the deflection and her nifty pass found Lahmari who made no mistake from close range.

Colombia, wearing their yellow shirts, fielded a full-strength team despite having effectively qualified to the last 16 before this game. Real Madrid striker Linda Caicedo, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at 15 but made a full recovery, took her place after x-rays cleared her of any health issues. Caicedo, who scored goals in Colombia's wins against South Korea and Germany, had suffered breathing difficulties against the Germans just days after collapsing in training with chest pain.

FIFA Women's World Cup: Morocco stun Colombia to storm into last 16 and chuck out Germany

A Moroccan internet user has been sentenced to five years in prison for sharing posts criticising the king on social media for normalising ties with Israel, news agency AFP reports cited his lawyer as saying.

Said Boukioud, 48, "was sentenced to five years in prison on Monday for Facebook posts denouncing normalisation with Israel in a way that could be interpreted as criticism of the king", El Hassan Essouni said, adding that he has appealed.

Foreign affairs are the prerogative of the monarch, King Mohammed VI, under the country's constitution.

Both countries, Morocco and Israel normalised relations in December 2020 within the confines of the US-backed Abraham Accords.

No intention to offend the king

The lawyer said that the Casablanca court's verdict "is harsh and incomprehensible".

He further added that even though his client expressed disavowal of ties with Israel, he had no intention whatsoever to offend the king in doing so.

The posts that were shared on the social media site Facebook were dated from the end of the year 2020 when Boukioud was living and working in Qatar.

He "deleted the posts and closed his account when he learned he was being prosecuted in Morocco", the lawyer said.

Boukioud was sentenced under Article 267-5 of the penal code which specifies a prison term of between six months and two years for anyone who vandalises the monarchy.

However, his sentence can be increased to five years if an offence is committed publicly, including by electronic means.

Human rights activists say the law hinders freedom of expression, and its wording "does not specify exactly what might constitute an attack" on the monarchy.

In a speech on Saturday marking the anniversary of his accession to the throne in 1999, the king reiterated "Morocco's unwavering stance in support of the just Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people".

Moroccan internet user sentenced to 5 years in prison for criticising the king on Facebook

Israel has recognised Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara and is considering opening a consulate there, the Moroccan government said on Monday (July 17).

A statement from Morocco's royal palace said that King Mohammed VI received a letter from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who supported the country’s claim over the disputed territory.

The Israeli position “will be sent to the United Nations, regional and international organisations…as well as all the states Israel has diplomatic relations with,” the letter to the king said, according to Morocco’s royal palace.

So far, 28 countries — mostly African and Arab —have opened consulates in Dakhla or the city of Laayoune, in what Morocco claims as proof of tangible support for its Western Saharan rule.

A senior Moroccan government official told Reuters news agency that Israel’s position on Western Sahara is “clear-cut” and comes as part of a momentum in Morocco’s favour.

The move comes following the support extended by Washington and Madrid and other European capitals on Morrocco’s claim over the territory.

The official further said that Israel’s position will not affect Morocco's "principles" in defending the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

He said that Morocco expects the decision to encourage Israeli investments in the territory.

As an indication of warming ties, the Israeli military earlier on Monday appointed a colonel as defence attaché to Morocco.

History of dispute

Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, is a sparsely-populated area of mostly desert situated on the northwest coast of Africa.

In 1975, Morocco annexed the region and since then, it has been the subject of a long-running territorial dispute between Morocco and its indigenous Sahrawi people, led by Algeria-backed Polisario Front.

Following this, an insurgency ensured that lasted for 16 years until 1991 following a UN-brokered truce and the promise of a referendum on independence, which has yet to take place.

However, the Polisario Front decided to government an exile government in Algeria and announced the formation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in 1976.

The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic is recognised by many governments and is a full member of the African Union.

The region is home to phosphate reserves and rich fishing grounds off its coast. And it is also believed that the country has vast yet untapped offshore oil deposits.

Around 36 migrants are feared dead after a rubber dinghy carrying more than 60 people sank off the coast of Morocco on Wednesday. Caminando Fronteras, a Spanish NGO, said that only 24 people have been rescued by Spain’s Maritime Rescue Service while the remaining were still missing. An Associated Press report confirmed that the dead bodies of a man and a child were retrieved from the waters.

Helena Maleno Garzon, the head of Spanish migration NGO Caminando Fronteras, said in a statement that the boat had been begging for help for 12 hours in Spanish waters. “Europe's border policy is what happened in Greece, Italy and Spain. It's torture and death," she wrote.

Boat made distress call on Tuesday

The Spanish Maritime Rescue received a distress call on Tuesday evening and promptly dispatched a plane from the Canary Islands to locate the boat. The vessel was found approximately 70 kilometres (44 miles) off the African coast and 160 kilometres south of the Canary Islands.

According to an unnamed spokesperson from the Spanish Maritime Rescue, the plane crew reported that the boat did not show any immediate signs of sinking, and there was no information available regarding the time or cause of the boat's sinking.

A new drought-resilient semi-dwarf wheat gene that can be grown in drier soil conditions, discovered by an international team of scientists, has given new hopes of sowing the crop in water-limited environments. This is a welcome relief for Morocco which has reported sharp declines in common wheat, durum wheat, and barley production due to extreme drought conditions emanating from the impacts of climate change in the country.

A court in Morocco on Friday (April 14) significantly increased jail sentence of three men convicted of 'indecent assault' for raping an 11-year-old girl repeatedly. One man was handed jail sentence of 20 years while the other two were handed 1o-year sentences. A lower court had handed one-and-a-half year and two-year sentences to the rapists. The case had sparked public outrage.

The appeals court ordered the three men to pay damages totalling 140,000 dirhams (nearly $14,000) instead of the 50,000 dirhams ordered by the lower court.

"We are satisfied with the decision which delivered justice to the victim," lawyer Abdelfattah Zahrach told AFP after the marathon hearing.

"That said, we do not understand why two of the accused have been only sentenced to 10 years," he said, adding that he was considering a further appeal to the Court of Cassation "after consulting the child's family".

The court heard testimonies from the victim and a witness in private after a request from the prosecution.

The public gallery was packed for Thursday's hearing, which ran on into the early hours of Friday.

The victim, looking frail and silent, was accompanied by her grandmother and father.

The defendants faced the same charges as in the original trial -- "misappropriation of a minor" and "indecent assault on a minor with violence".

The prosecution requested that "rape" be added to the charges, a request rejected by the judge.

The accused hung their heads in the dock as the evidence was presented.

One of the men was confronted with a DNA test proving that he is the father of a now 13-month-old child born to the girl.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi, charged with rape in France, was called into the Morocco squad Monday for friendly games against Brazil and Peru.

One of the stars of Morocco's historic charge to the semi-finals of the World Cup last year, Hakimi was charged earlier this month with allegedly raping a 24-year-old woman.

Hakimi allegedly paid for his accuser to travel to his home on February 25 in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt while his wife and children were away on holiday.

He denies the accusations.

PSG defender Achraf Hakimi named in Morocco squad despite rape accusations

Paris Saint-Germain and Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi has been charged with rape after the French prosecutors confirmed on Friday. Hakimi, 24, was questioned by prosecutors Thursday in connection with accusations from a 24-year-old woman, and subsequently charged. The Madrid-born player, who was a key part of Morocco's surprise run to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar last year, was seen at PSG training on Friday morning.

What is the case?

Hakimi has been accused of raping a 24-year-old woman at his home in a Paris suburb on February 25. According to an article in the Parisien newspaper, the woman had reported the incident to police on Sunday, February 26 but did not file the complaint in the case. The star player has been part of a trophy-laden career having won titles at Real Madrid and Inter Milan, before making his switch to the French capital.

PSG in the meantime are yet to respond in the matter and are yet to open an investigation or disciplinary action against the player. If he is found to be guilty, he could face a lengthy timeout from the first team action as clubs have often taken actions against their players found violating the disciplinary terms.

Could Hakimi face a long ban?

Recently, Manchester United star Mason Greenwood was exiled from the first team action after being caught in a similar incident in January 2022. Greenwood was in excellent touch for the team, but disciplinary action by the club kept him away from the team and has not featured yet. If this is the case for PSG, the right-back is likely to miss the important games against Nantes and Bayern Munich. While PSG are in a better position in the French Ligue One, they are once again on the verge of exit in the Champions League as they trail by 0-1 to Bayern Munich and will make the trip to Germany on Tuesday.

PSG star Achraf Hakimi charged with rape after questioning by French prosecutors

Two French journalists were put on trial on Monday in France for allegedly attempting to extort money from the king of Morocco in exchange for concealing supposedly damaging revelations about him. In order to stop the release of a book on the Moroccan royal family, Eric Laurent, 75, and Catherine Graciet, 48, allegedly demanded $2 million in 2015.

Both authors, who could be sentenced to five years in prison and fined 75,000 euros if proven guilty, have denied any wrongdoing and claim that a lawyer for the Moroccan royal family was the one who initially gave them the money.

In court on Monday, Laurent acknowledged that accepting to "let myself be caught up in this affair" was an "ethical error" and a "disaster."

Co-author Graciet said that the Moroccan envoy "seduced me with his financial offer, I took the plunge and I regret it".

World of Africa: The jewel of Moroccan football

Croatia beat Morocco 2-1 in the third-place playoffs of the World Cup at the Khalifa Stadium on Saturday evening to end the African side's dream run in Qatar. Goals from Josko Gvardiol and Mislav Oršić were enough for the 2018 finalists to get the better of a spirited Moroccan side.

Both teams came into the contest after suffering the disappointment of not making it to the final of the quadrennial event. Though many would have anticipated the third-place match to be devoid of any intensity, it certainly wasn't the case.

The passion and desire to win a football match was as high as the motivation that playing in a World Cup final brings - making up for an intriguing watch for the neutrals.

A blistering start to the match

The two teams were off the blocks in a lightning-quick manner with Croatia drawing the first blood. A fee-kick curled from 40-50 yards out was cushioned into the back of the net, past a diving Bounou by Gvardiol, one of the stars of the tournaments, with much ease in the seventh minute.

However, before Croatian fans even had the time to rejoice their team's goal, Morocco, through a free kick two minutes later, managed to restore the parity.

Walid Regragui and his men, known for their defensive solidity were often scruffy in their clearances. Croatia had numerous chances within the first half an hour to double the lead.

The half-hearted clearances from Morocco came back to haunt them when Mislav Oršić, given a starting place in the playing XI tied the laces behind a beautiful curling shot in the 42nd minute that flew past Bounou , who had no chance to stop that.

The goal came against the run of play as Morocco had amassed a flurry of chances in the 15 minutes prior to it.

After the break, Regragui made one substitution by replacing Abdelhamid Sabiri with Ilias Chair. However, it was the 2018 finalists that picked up the tempo first with goalscorer Orisic letting one fly that grazed the side netting.

Perhaps Morocco's biggest chance of the match came in the 75th minute when Youssef En-Nesyri, loitering all alone at the far post was found by his teammate.

En-Nesyri, the hero of the quarterfinal against Portugal pulled the trigger but for the umpteenth time for Croatia, keeper Livakovic came to the rescue.

Afterwards, the Moroccan players had a tough time keeping their heads about it as tempers flared, trying to chase the equalising goal. Morocco tried hard but with no finesse in the final third, they had to pay dearly, once again.

Playing XI changes

Croatia started the game with coach Zlatko Dalic making five changes to the starting XI from their defeat against Argentina. The most notable omission was of Marcelo Brozovic who had to leave the field during the last game, soon after halftime.

As for Morocco, their captain Romain Saiss could not break into the XI after failing to recover from an injury.

The fortunes of a local football academy named Mohammed VI Football Academy, which is based near Rabat in Morocco and was established in 2010 for nearly $13 million, have seen rise in the applications following the country’s recent success at the Qatar World Cup, academy’s Tarik El Khazri said.

While many of the Moroccan players who are featuring in this World Cup grew up abroad, four of the players from the squad mainly Youssef En-Nesyri, Azzedine Ounahi, Nayef Aguerd and Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti, trained as youngsters at this academy that brings in talent from across the country.

As per Khazri, the talent and skill have always been there in Morocco but it was the lack of proper training that was hurting the growth of players.
