Former Australia pacer Glenn McGrath heaped praise on Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins ahead of the upcoming IPL 2024 edition, starting on March 22. Starc will be back in the IPL, after 2015, and will be representing the Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) whereas Cummins will lead Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the upcoming season. Both the Aussies were in high demand during the IPL 2024 mini-auction in December 2023 and went for huge price tags. While Cummins was sold for INR 20.5 crore (205 million), Starc was the costliest; earning INR 24.75 crore (247.5 million).

McGrath opined on the Aussie duo and feels that both bowlers have enough experience under their belt and won't be bogged down by the price tag pressure. Speaking at the MRF pace foundation, the veteran said, "The money that they have received is incredible. But they are both very experienced players and know the game well. They are going to go out and play well as they have done in the past. I don't think it (price tag) will impact them even one per cent."

On Starc's much-awaited IPL return, after a long hiatus, the legendary pacer opined, "For Starc, he chose not to come to the IPL due to personal reasons. But he comes back and gets a record price. He will be looking forward to it. On his day, if he is moving the ball around, he will be as good as any other fast bowler."

IPL 2024: Mitchell Starc ready for 'new challenge' with Kolkata Knight Riders in upcoming season

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 will see the return of Gautam Gambhir in the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) dugout after the 2017 season. Gambhir led the franchise from 2011-2017, helping them win the title twice during this period. This time around, the former Indian opener will wear the mentor's hat for the two-time winners and hope for the Shreyas Iyer-led side to lift their third IPL trophy.

After joining the franchise on Thursday (March 14), Gambhir spoke about new recruit Mitchell Starc. The Australian pacer was bought by KKR in the IPL 2024 mini-auction, held in Dubai last December, for a whopping INR 24.75 crore (247.5 million); becoming the costliest buy ever. Gambhir feels the Aussie speedster will be KKR's X-factor this season

Speaking to the press in Kolkata, Gambhir said, "I had already said on the auction table that he [Starc] is an X-factor and I am sure he is going to deliver. And there's no such pressure of a price tag. I hope that what he has done in international cricket, he can do the same for KKR."

Starc returns to the IPL after nine years, having played two seasons for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2014 and 2015; ending with 34 wickets. He was bought by the KKR franchise in 2018, for INR 9.4 crore (94 million), before he withdrew his participation ahead of the season. Australia skipper Pat Cummins hopeful of Test bowlers achieving THIS rare feat in second WI Test

Former South Africa all rounder Chris Morris has lauded Australia's Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins getting huge money in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. Cummins and Starc were bought for INR 20.5 crore and INR 24.75 crore, respectively at the IPL mini-auction on December 19 last year. While Cummins was bought by SunRisers Hyderabad, Starc landed a spot with Kolkata Knight Riders after intense bidding.

Morris himself was once the most expensive player in the IPL when he was bought by Rajasthan Royals for INR 16.75 crore ahead of the 2021 season. Reacting to Australian duo's big money, the former Protea said the 'excellent achievement' brings additional pressure as well.

"It is excellent. The bidding is out of our control. If you compare cricket with what other sports are paying, it is great that the best players in the world are being paid the highest. It is an excellent achievement but also brings additional pressure. But they (Cummins and Starc) can handle that pressure, that is why they were bought for so much money. They are performing really well right now and are red-hot," Morris told news agency ANI.

Between Cummins and Starc, the latter is making a comeback to the cash-rich league after eight years. Starc had last played in the IPL in 2014 and 2015 for Royals Challengers Bangalore - his only two seasons in the T20 league. Former South Africa all rounder Chris Morris has lauded Australia's Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins getting huge money in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) auction.

Talking about the numbers, Starc has played 27 matches in his two IPL seasons - taking 34 wickets with 4/15 being his best performance in an innings.
The most lethal pace bowling trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Australia captain Pat Cummins is fresh, upbeat and available for the upcoming remaining summer, including two home Tests against West Indies, and as many away against New Zealand, head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed.

Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood have played 28 Tests together, but it’s only the second time in their careers that they played five Tests (or more) in a row. In 2023, the trio appeared in the final two Ashes Tests, played the WTC (against India) together and then lined up against Pakistan in the recently concluded Test series, which they won by 3-0.

Despite having a busy last year, where they drew the away Ashes, won the WTC Final and lifted their sixth world ODI title (beating India in the final by six wickets) - where all three played 10 consecutive matches, the trio again came down hard on the visiting Pakistan side. Pat Cummins was the star of the Test series, picking 19 wickets, including three back-to-back five-wicket hauls.

Meanwhile, ahead of the West Indies series starting with the first Test in Adelaide on January 17, McDonald said the trio will not be rested and will start in the playing XI in the remaining four Tests.

Four days after becoming the most-talked-about person in world cricket for his IPL price - reading a whopping INR 24.75 crore (highest ever in IPL's auction history) despite not stepping on the field, Starc's stance on prioritising Test cricket over everything else hasn't changed yet. AUS v PAK: Test cricket still ‘priority’ for IPL’s million-dollar baby Mitchell Starc

Australia pacer Mitchell Starc is surprised at the lower pace of the touring Pakistan team. Notably, pace has been the characteristic of the Pak bowling line-up over the years but this time around it hasn't been there for the Asian bowlers.

"I think everyone was slightly surprised at the lower pace of the Pakistan bowlers, when you're generally used to some guys getting in the 150s [kph]," Starc said two days before the Boxing Day Test while speaking to media at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The pacer although agreed that pace isn't 'be all and end all' but acknowledged that it 'certainly plays a part and can help.'

Pakistan, which lost the first Test by 360 runs, had played Shaheen Afridi, Aamer Jamal and Khurram Shahzad as Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf were not available. While Naseem is in rehab after injury sustained during the Asia Cup earlier this year, Rauf made himself unavailable to play in Australia's domestic T20 tournament Big Bash League (BBL).

Their replacements, Jamal and Shahzad were good but the quickest as they constantly hit the speeds till late 130s only.

Starc, meanwhile, also acknowledged that the extra pace wouldn't be quite as crucial at the MCG. "Case in point, you look at Scotty Boland who can bowl good wheels, but he's not at your top end of pace bowlers," he said. "But he generates a lot of sideways movement here in Melbourne, obviously being his home ground. He's done it for a long time and we saw that obviously against England, where every ball he bowled could have been a wicket. So I don't think that pace is the be all and end all. Certainly, for our attack we all complement each other really well by doing things very differently."

Pakistan are currently trailing 0-1 in the three Test series with the third Test scheduled to be played from January 3 after the Boxing Day Test.

After weeks of battle, the ODI World Cup 2023 edition is set for a fitting finale as India and Australia will lock horns in the summit clash on Sunday (Nov 19) at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. Both teams are coming into this game on the back of brilliant runs in the ongoing ten-team tournament in India. While Rohit Sharma & Co. are unbeaten after ten games, Australia have eight wins on the trot after two successive defeats.

India defeated New Zealand by 70 runs in the first semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Nov 15 whereas Australia edged past South Africa by three wickets in pursuit of 213 at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Nov 16. Thus, an enthralling battle is awaited between the two heavyweights.

So far, only two Indians have won the coveted prize; i.e. Tendulkar (2003) and Yuvraj (2011).
Australia pacer Mitchell Starc has revealed that the team planned for the slow and dry pitch on play during the World Cup final against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Australian speedsters managed to pick up seven wickets during the innings, skittling India for a below-par 240-run total.

Speaking at the mid-innings show, Starc said Australia were prepared for the slow deck. Despite getting hit for 80-odd runs in the powerplay, Australian bowlers roared back and kept the powerful Indian batting lineup in check.

"Yes, I think we planned for things. We were terrific with the ball and now off to the batters. There is not much in the wicket for the seam bowlers," Starc told host broadcaster Star Sports.

"So, we put in the hard yards. Patty (Pat Cummins) was good and Josh (Hazlewood) was great and the spinners bowled well. We bowled second against England and there was dew and so no hope of reverse swing," he added.

Australian pace bowlers exploited the conditions well by getting the white ball to reverse swing. Indian lower order was demolished by the reverse swing bowling from Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins.

"I think it's not an easy wicket. Dew or no dew you have to apply yourselves and score the runs. This is the World Cup, it is about how much you want it. The new ball will be the key as it's easy to score when the ball is harder. Let's see and we are up for it to chase this down," concluded the fast bowler.

World Cup 2023: Mitchell Starc reveals how Australia bundled out India for 240 in final

India slumped to another low after Mitchell Starc sent batter KL Rahul to the pavilion with more than eight overs to spare. Rahul, who had been holding the innings together after Australia applied the chokehold, departed while playing a reverse swinging delivery from the left-armer.

In the 42nd over with the scoreboard reading 203, Rahul was setting up the innings with Suryakumar Yadav at the other end. However, with the ball reverse swinging in the last few overs, captain pat Cummins introduced his strike bowler into the attack.

Starc started the over by coming from over the wicket but quickly changed it to around the wicket. As soon as he changed the angle, the ball started playing tricks. The seamer bowled a good length ball on the sixth stump line that nipped around before and after pitching, forcing Rahul to play at it.

The Indian batter went feeling for it and the ball took the outside edge which was safely pouched by Josh Inglis behind the stumps.

World Cup 2023, WATCH: KL Rahul perishes to Mitchell Starc's reverse swing, India slump

Australia pacer Mitchell Starc is ready for the ODI World Cup 2023 final against India as the two sides face each other in the tournament final for the first time since 2003. Starc agreed that it is going to be a loud match with home fans backing their team to beat the five-time winners.

“It's certainly going to be a big occasion in a World Cup Final in India. It's going to be loud. There's going to be a lot of passion there," Starc said after Australia's three-wicket win over South Africa in the second semifinal played on November 16 in Kolkata.

“It's going to be a fantastic occasion and no doubt there's going to be different amounts of pressure at different times on both teams.

“But yeah, I think it's just going to be a great spectacle of cricket. And certainly, everyone in our changing room is looking forward to the occasion,” he added.

The game would be between India's top order and Australia's pacer who are peaking at the right time. India, however, will have a slight advantage after being undefeated till now and having beaten Australia in the league stage.

“It’s why we play the game. We want to take on the best. They've been the best in the tournament so far and we both find ourselves in the final," Starc said about the challenge.

“That's what World Cups are about. You want to take on the best throughout and we certainly come up against a team that have obviously led from the front through the tournament and they're undefeated.

“We played them in the first game of the tournament (when India won by six wickets), now we get to take them on in the last. So yeah, what a place to be at the end of a World Cup!” he said further.

The Indian fans will be hoping to bury the ghosts of the 2003 World Cup final against Australia under Sourav Ganguly. Starc, who must have been 13 at that time, however, said that he doesn't remember much about that game.

“Apart from Australia winning, I don't know what happened in that game,” he said.

“It was 2003, I was probably asleep. I don’t know, I can't remember what I did two weeks ago,” said the Australia fast bowler.

ODI World Cup 2023: 'Looking forward...,' Australia pacer Mitchell Starc fires WARNING ahead of final vs India

Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc is of the view that ODI matches should have only one white ball, instead of the two balls that are used from either ends. Speaking to reporters ahead of the semifinal against South Africa at the ongoing World Cup in India, Starc put forth his view.

The 33-year-old believes that using one ball will even the playing field and give some breathing space to the bowlers.

"I still think it should be one ball not two. The ball stays harder for longer. As we've seen here, the grounds are quite small, wickets are flat. If anything in world cricket wickets have gotten flatter and I think if you look at some of that old footage when they bowled with one ball, reverse swing comes into it a lot more," said Starc.

"That actually brings the bowlers back into the game, and I don't think it's any secret that one-day cricket and probably T20 cricket as well is a batter's game and bowlers just have to hang on," he added.

Also read | Gareth Morgan picks 'six wickets from six balls' to seal improbable win in Australia's division 3 cricket

No reverse swing for bowlers

Notably, it was in 2011 that ICC brought in the change that allowed for two different white balls to be used during the 50 overs of each inning. The immediate effect was that reverse swing went out of the contest as each ball was only 25 overs old at the end of an inning.

While the white ball already swings little initially, bowlers in the past had the luxury of using the old one to reverse swing to outfox the batters. For a ball to reverse swing, it has to be old with one side shiny and the other rough.

It allowed for an even contest and bowlers could stage a comeback in the later parts of the game. Moreover, it was a skill that needed a collective effort from the team. The fielders needed to constantly work the ball while the bowlers needed to learn the art of getting it to nip in the air before seaming off it as well.

"I think just because of the two new balls at the start, I don't think the balls swings any longer. They swing at the start and unless conditions suit, they don't swing for very long at all. If anything they stay nicer for batsmen towards the end," said Starc.

At the ongoing World Cup, Starc has looked a pale shadow of his former self, taking 10 wickets in eight matches with an economy rate of 6.55.

World Cup 2023: 'It should be,' Mitchell Starc suggests rule change to make playing field even for bowlers

New Zealand opener Devon Conway was left disappointed after Australian fielder Mitchell Starc pulled off a blinder in the park to send him back to the pavilion. Chasing a steep target of 399 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, New Zealand were off to a flyer, courtesy of Conway and Will Young, before Josh Hazlewood struck.

It was during the eighth over of the innings when New Zealand had already plundered 61 runs that Conway attempted to go after Hazlewood who dug in a short one on middle and leg. The Kiwi batter swivelled and pulled the ball behind square. However, Australian captain Pat Cummins, who had seemingly done his homework, stationed Starc at a widish short fine leg where he leapt to his right and took a stunning catch.

The catch put brakes on the NZ scoring rate and in the very next over of Hazlewood, Young departed as well, gifting a straightforward catch to Starc this time.

Put into bat first by NZ, Australia romped to an excellent start, primarily due to the effortless strokeplay from a returning Travis Head. Playing his debut World Cup game, Head raced off to a 59-ball century and tormented the NZ bowlers. The southpaw was ably aided by previous match centurion David Warner who smashed a 65-ball 81 and fell to the guile of part-timer Glenn Phillips.

Not only did Phillips get wickets, but he was successful in arresting the momentum with plenty of dots while at it. In the end, it was the pyrotechnics from Glenn Maxwell, Pat Cummins and Josh Inglis that propelled Australia to another 350+ total. The five-time champions could have easily gone beyond 400 if it wasn't for Trent Boult who picked up three wickets in an over and ensured that Australia did not play their full quota of 50 overs.

World Cup 2023, NZ vs AUS: Starc pulls off a blinder to send Conway back to pavilion - WATCH

Australia finally got their first win of the ODI World Cup 2023 after beating Sri Lanka by five wickets on October 16 in Lucknow. The five-time champions had previously lost to India in their opening game and then against South Africa as well. They had an early scare during the game against Sri Lanka as well but eventually came out triumphant.

The Aussie bowlers were ineffective early on as Sri Lanka added 125 runs for the first wicket while batting first but the bowlers pulled things back and brought them down to 178/5. Mitchell Starc, the fearsome left-arm bowler, who was off colour during the early overs, struck back to send Dhananjaya de Silva back as the fifth wicket.

Starc also bowled that 41st over of the innings with Sri Lanka eight down and bowled his trademark 'toe crushing' yorker to rattle the stumps of Lahiru Kumara. Have a look at the video of the dismissal below:

Have a look at the video of the dismissal below: View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) × Talking about the match, Australia managed to restrict Sri Lanka for 204 despite a prolific opening stand by Lankan openers. ODI World Cup 2023: WATCH - Australia pacer Mitchell Starc's TOE-CRUSHING yorker vs SL to dismiss batter

Controversy erupted during the Australia vs Sri Lanka World Cup encounter in Lucknow when pacer Mitchell Starc attempted a runout on the non-striker's end at the very start of the match - a mode of dismissal that is rather antithetical to the Australian way of playing the game.

Bowling the opening over of the innings, Starc had an unsuccessful LBW review on the first ball. By the time the fuming left-arm pacer came around to bowl the fourth ball, he stopped in his delivery stride and issued a warning to non-striker Kusal Perera to not leave his crease.

According to commentator Nasser Hussain, Starc had issued the warning after the first ball when he had a little chat with the umpire.

“After the first ball Starc had a little word with the umpire, Kusal Perera just leaving his crease... he was saying to Kusal Perera ‘don’t leave your crease’,” Nasser Hussain said.

“That’s fair enough, he’s told the umpire now he’s told the batter, stay in your crease at that end... a very eventful first over," added Hussain.

World Cup 2023: Mitchell Starc threatens runout at non-striker's end to Sri Lankan batter - WATCH

Australia bowler Mitchell Starc took a hat-trick in the ODI World Cup warm-up game against Netherlands on September 30, showing that he's fully fit ahead of the quadrennial event. The game in Thiruvananthapuram was marred by rain but Starc's show will inject a lot of confidence in the Australian side who are dealing with a couple of injuries.

Starc bowled the first over in the Dutch chase, taking two wickets on the last two balls of the over before coming back and taking the third wicket on the first ball of his next over. The left-arm pace bowler dismissed Dutchmen Max O'Dowd, Wesley Barresi, and Bas de Leede off consecutive balls across two overs to register the hat-trick. Have a look at the wickets here:

WATCH: Mitchell Starc's hat-trick in Australia's ODI World Cup warm-up game against Netherlands

India and Australia will face off in the final ODI on Wednesday (Sep 27) in Rajkot before World Cup action gets underway, with warm-up games starting on September 29. Though host India is leading the three-match series 2-0, Australia will aim to avoid suffering a whitewash by bringing in two match winners, Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, into the playing XI.

Both teams rested their star players in the first two ODIs. Australia fielded relatively stronger sides than India and yet suffered the wrath of playing poor cricket in two outings, with bowling failing to click.

Being mindful of picking players coming from injury, Australia might risk drafting Starc and Maxwell for the final clash. While Starc could play his first game since the last Ashes Test at the Oval, Maxwell will also return following a lengthy layoff.

Speaking to the media on the eve of the final ODI, Starc said he would see how he feels after he trains on Wednesday morning as his priority remains to stay fit for the World Cup, which begins in about ten days on October 5.

While Starc did not disclose Maxwell’s fitness status, he ensured the 34-year-old will be available for the World Cup.

"His ability with the ball, particularly in these conditions, adds another option in the bowling department as well. He seems in good spirits and going really well, [but] his return I am not sure what that looks like for this week but certainly on track for the World Cup," Starc added.

IND vs AUS 2023: Mitchell Starc, Maxwell set to return for 3rd ODI as Australia look to avoid whitewash

Australia are aiming to get their senior players some game time in the three-match ODI series against India which starts Friday, September 22 ahead of the ODI World Cup. The Kangaroos, however, would be without pacer Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for the series opener. Skipper Pat Cummins, however, is hopeful that the duo is available for the later games of the series.

Notably, Starc is coming back from a groin injury while Maxwell is returning from paternity leave and ankle soreness from last year's leg injury. Apart from them, Cummins himself is waiting to get some game time after a wrist injury while Steve Smith too is returning following a wrist issue.

"We want to strike the balance between getting used to these conditions, hopefully winning some games, but we also don't want to get to that first game [of the World Cup] and already be cooked," Cummins said. "No doubt we'll be trying a few different combinations, a few different players will get a chance but ideally we'd like to structure up pretty closely to how we'll play in the World Cup."

"So batters batting in similar positions, ... and as a captain I want to get used to how you use your bowlers over here, it might be a bit different to say South Africa or Australia. Does the second spinner play a part? Hopefully we get some answers over the next few games," he added.

While Australia have been using Marcus Stoinis as a new-ball bowler, Cameroon Green and Sean Abbott are the other options. Both Green and Abbott did take part in the recently-conclude South Africa ODI series and are available again following a bit of fitness issues.

"You need five bowlers, so the more allrounders you have you can really bolster your batting," Cummins said. "It gives us flexibility to pick four genuine bowlers or maybe three bowlers and bat an allrounder at No. 8. Hopefully Maxi comes back later in the series, but the other three guys have been bowling fantastically," added the Aussie skipper.

Australia start their ODI World Cup campaign on October 8 against India.

WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell set to miss first ODI against India, confirms Australia skipper Pat Cummins

Australia has added Michael Neser to the squad for the remainder of South Africa ODIs to bolster the attack as star quicks continue to recover ahead of the Cricket World Cup 2023. Neser, 33, has played only two ODIs before, in 2018 against England, and will join the Aussie squad in Potchefstroom before the third One-Dayer.

Left-arm quick Spencer Johnson, who made himself available in the absence of seasoned campaigner Mitchell Starc, is said to have picked up a minor hamstring injury. Though he is likely out of contention for this series, Spencer will travel with the squad to India for the three ODIs.

Speaking on the call to bring in the experienced Neser for this series, selector Tony Dodemaide said, "[He] is an experienced all-format cricketer who will provide us with an extra fast bowling option should that be required for the remainder of the tour."

While Starc suffered a groin injury that ruled him out of the ODIs, regular skipper Pat Cummins skipped the series as he is recovering from the wrist injury sustained during the Ashes. Besides, the latest injury to all-rounder Cameron Green further worries the travelling side, as Australia hopes to land in India with their injury-free A-squad.

Other than the bowlers, Steve Smith is out with a wrist injury, while Glenn Maxwell, who was due to miss the ODIs to return home for the birth of his child, suffered an ankle injury.

Senior pacer Josh Hazlewood led the pace of the attack in the first game, and with rookie Aaron Hardie in the line-up, Australia can bank on the youngsters to do the job.

Marnus Labuschagne, the Test specialist, made the first ODI about himself without even making it into the playing XI in the first place. Coming on as a concussion substitute for injured Green, who got hit on the helmet by Kagiso Rabada, Marnus scored an unbeaten 80, helping his team chase a moderate total of 223.

With this, Marnus pressed his case for an unlikely call-up to the side for his maiden 50-over World Cup.

Starc, who was last seen in IPL action in 2015, confirmed his plans for the 2024 edition on Thursday, September 7. Starc was named in Australia’s ODI World Cup squad on Wednesday as they bid for their sixth title in the 50-over format. Starc was also on the cards of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the past but never played a single game.

Starc open to IPL return

"I'm definitely going back in (next) year," Starc told the Willow Talk cricket podcast.

"And it's somewhat of a quiet winter next year … in comparison to this winter, so I think a perfect opportunity to put my name in,” Starc said on his stance on the IPL.

If Starc does make his comeback to the most lucrative cricket league in the world, it will be his first appearance at the marquee tournament since 2015. Former RCB pacer Mitchell Starc to end IPL exile, confirms return plans for 2024 edition

Former West Indies legend Vivian Richards has named the bowler who he feels will end up as the leading wicket-taker in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition in India. The forthcoming edition will be held entirely in India and kicks off on October 05, in Ahmedabad, with the defending champions England taking on New Zealand whereas the Rohit Sharma-led home side will start their run on October 08 in Chennai. Richards, who was part of Clive Llyod-led West Indies' title run in 1975 and 1979, feels Pakistan's Shaheen Afridi will return with most wickets in the mega event.

Speaking to the ICC, Richards said, "The leading wicket-taker in the World Cup will be Shaheen Afridi because I have seen him in Pakistan. I spent some time in the PSL and I have seen his massive growth. He is a highly determined individual. He is my man."

Not Bumrah, Starc or Rashid! Richards names THIS pacer to become CWC 2023's leading wicket-taker

The extended away winter in England (for the Australian cricketers) was always going to have its repercussions. With six back-to-back Tests, players got worn out, and as a result, two of their star cricketers – Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc have been ruled out of the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa.

While Smith will miss the tour due to the wrist injury, seamer Starc continues to recover from groin soreness. Both are, however, expected to return for the India series and the World Cup 2023 that follows.

While Perth Scorchers' captain Ashton Turner will replace Smith in the T20I squad, World Cup discard Marnus Labuschagne will fill his place in the ODI side. Starc, who just got picked for the ODIs, will get replaced by left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson in the team. The rookie seamer earned his maiden call-up to the senior side (in T20I) following performance-heavy outings in domestic cricket.

Smith, who also returned to the T20I team on the back of stunning shows in the BBL earlier this year and was supposed to open too, is said to be suffering from a tendon injury in his left wrist.

Following Aaron Finch’s retirement, Australia didn’t have a T20I captain.
Cummins, however, is set to remain the Test captain.

Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc to miss South Africa series due to injuries, Aussies rope in Labuschagne as cover

With Ashes already retained, Australia showed no sign of letting the chance of winning the urn in England for the first time since 2001 go away. The fifth Test at the Oval in London is Australia’s final stop on this long English tour, and they began on a good note. With an eye on a 3-1 series win, Australia retained their top bowlers, with Starc coming good on day one with a four-wicket haul.

After electing to bowl first, Australian bowlers were found wanting in the first 10 overs, with England batters starting on a brilliant note. With something to lose and all to play for, English batters showed no signs of slowing down before Mitchell Marsh removed left-handed Duckett caught on leg-side for 41 off 41 balls. Four runs later, Zak Crawley got out, while Joe Root followed on five.

Moeen Ali and England’s prospect Harry Brook put the side back on track, with both having a crack at the bowlers at will. Moeen, in his 34-run knock, smashed two sixes, while Brook, who looked like getting his maiden Ashes hundred, scored 85.

However, like how every good thing comes to an end, Woakes dismissed Warner caught in slips just at the fag end of the day on 24. We have our first! Ashes, 5th Test: Australia in command as Mitchell Starc triggers England's collapse with four-for on day one

Mitchell Starc is Australia’s most successful bowler in the 2023 Ashes with 19 wickets so far, and despite suffering a heavy blow on his shoulder while fielding in the previous Test in Manchester, the veteran seamer remains unbothered about it. Starc said the only thing he cares about now is how he can help Australia beat England in the final Test at the Oval and clinch a historic series win on their soil for the first time since 2001.

After electing to bowl first in the fifth Test, Australia dismissed England on 283 on day one, with Starc picking a four-wicket haul, getting rid of Captain Ben Stokes, Harry Brook and Chris Woakes.

Speaking to the media after the first day’s play, Starc said he didn’t get any scans done on his troubled shoulder, adding he can bowl fine despite little pain, which can be looked after following the end of this Test.

"I'm not interested in getting scanned or anything like that," Starc said. "We'll worry about that at the end of the week. Just a bit of discomfort there, something going on there in the AC [joint]. Nothing major, and I'm still able to bowl and do what I need to do."

While Starc needed to get some extra strapping during the day, he returned to pick crucial wickets to trigger England’s collapse.

Having dealt with injuries throughout his illustrious career, Starc said such discomforts are part and parcel of the game and will go away eventually. Though he missed the first Test in Edgbaston, with Australia picking fit-again Josh Hazlewood instead, Starc performed in all three Tests with both new and old ball.

"I've played for over ten years and been through a few niggles and injuries over the time. There's been times when I've left the team a man down or other people have. We all push through niggles and whatnot. No difference this week, it's just a little bit of discomfort, and away we go," Starc added.

Winning Ashes motivates me: Starc

With Australia already leading 2-1 and having retained the urn on the back of that, winning the fifth Test and clinching the trophy is the only aim on their head. And that in itself is enough for Starc to not worry about his shoulder injury and instead push extra to go for the win.

"It's not the most comfortable thing. But I don't think any bowler [in] international cricket is going to say it's something that's comfortable for the body. So just push on. We've got a big week ahead of us to try and win this Ashes series and then a few weeks off so there's no reason not to get up for this week,” Starc on his shoulder pain.

Ashes, 5th Test: ‘Brave’ Mitchell Starc not worried about shoulder injury, eyes clinching historic series win

Ashes is on the line, and Australia’s Mitchell Starc is not ready to drop the guard when his team needs him the most. Having suffered a nasty-looking blow to his shoulder while fielding during day two of the Manchester Test, Starc will continue to bowl on day three, per the team’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori. With England leading by 67 runs after stumps on day two, Vettori feels Starc is ready to fire and bring Australia back into the game despite an injury scare.

After helping Australia fight a little with the bat in hand, scoring an unbeaten 36 in the first innings, the veteran seamer picked Ben Duckett’s wicket inside the first five overs. The left-armer also troubled Moeen Ali and Zak Crawley with steamy bouncers and inswingers but didn’t participate much following the shoulder bump.

Also, Starc expressed discomfort in his leg earlier, keeping the Australian camp and fans on their toes. Speaking in detail about his suspected injury scares, Vettori said while his leg looks fine, Starc still has to be careful with his shoulder. However, he remained adamant about Starc’s availability on day three of the fourth Ashes Test.

"I think the leg is good, no issues there," Daniel Vettori, Australia's assistant coach, said. "The shoulder, we saw what happened in the field, he's currently got some ice on it, and we're pretty confident it will be right tomorrow.

"He's one of those guys who doesn't like to spend too long off the park. But he got straight into a hot spot, and three balls in a row came to him in the field, and he didn't quite feel comfortable throwing it. I haven't actually spoken to him, but that's what it looked [like]. We're all pretty confident he can bounce back tomorrow,” Vettori added.

Vettori optimistic about Australia’s chances in fourth Test

After conceding at a run-a-ball during day two of the Manchester Test, Australia found themselves in a spot of bother, with Zak Crawley and Joe Root piling runs at will. Though both are back in the hut, Australia still has to dismiss captain Ben Stokes, Harry Brook and keeper-batter Jonny Bairstow.
Vettori, however, feels Australia can still make a comeback in the game, but for that, they have to bat exceptionally well in the third innings – which, to him, will make or break this Test for the touring side.

"It all leads to batting exceptionally well in the third innings, that's what will set up the rest of the game as well as how well we bowl tomorrow," he said.

"We won't have a chance to have a say on the result unless we do the next day well. England are in control, but if we can come in and get those final wickets for as few runs [as possible], then it sets up for that final innings and the weather may play a part in that," Vettori added.
