BGT: Starc, batters help Australia kill Pink-Ball Test blues as hosts dominate India on day one in Adelaide

Mitchell Starc wreaked havoc in the first innings of the pink-ball Test between Australia and India in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy as he bagged his first fifer against Rohit Sharma’s men. Playing at the Adelaide Oval on Friday (Dec 6), Starc was on the money having got the better of Yashasvi Jaiswal on the first ball of the match. This was followed by another brilliant spell to complete the fifer in the second session of Day 1 as he ended with figures of 48/6.

Starc wreaks havoc

With Australia trailing 0-1 in the five-match BGT, Starc's role was important for the Aussies in the Adelaide Test and he did not disappoint. Having silenced Jaiswal for a duck for the second time in the series, he went on to take valuable wickets of KL Rahul (37) and Virat Kohli (7), putting India on the back foot. The leading wicket-taker in the pink-ball format, Starc showed his class from both ends at the Adelaide Oval as the Indian team struggled to counter him despite the returns of skipper Rohit Sharma (3) and Shubman Gill (31) in the Playing XI.

The left-arm pacer then managed to complete his 15th fifer in the Test format when he dismissed tail-end batters Ravichandran Ashwin (22) and Harshit Rana (0) in back-to-back overs in the second session of Day 1. India later got bowled out for 180 as Nitish Reddy top-scored with 42 off 54.

Starc extends pink-ball dominance

With the fifer, the 34-year-old pacer extended his dominance in the pink-ball matches and now has 72 wickets after the first innings in Adelaide. He remains the most decorated bowler in the pink-ball format as he leads second-placed Nathan Lyon (43) by 28 wickets. The Aussies will heavily rely on the services of the pacer as they look to continue their near-flawless form in the pink-ball Test.

In 12 previous pink-ball matches Australia have lost only one match which came against the West Indies in January 2024.

BGT 2024/25: Mitchell Starc wreaks havoc in Adelaide with maiden fifer against Team India

India's Dhruv Jurel caught a blinder of a catch on day 4 (Monday, Nov 25) of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test in Perth, Australia. Jurel, who is a wicketkeeper by skill, was fielding at short-leg position—one of the hardest places to field on the cricket field.

The catch taken by Jurel was just at the stroke of tea on day 4 off off-spinner Washington Sundar's ball to dismiss Aussie Mitchell Starc as the eighth wicket in Australia's second innings.

The ball bounced a bit more than Starc's liking on a double-paced pitch, which Starc lobbed towards the legside only for Jurel to pluck it out of thin air. Have a look at the video below:

BGT, Perth Test, Day 2: Australia all out on 104 as captain Bumrah completes five-for

KL Rahul’s dismissal in the first innings in Perth sparked controversy as he fell prey to a debatable DRS call just before lunch on day one of the first BGT Test. Rahul opened alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal after India elected to bat first against Australia in the series opener, looking in control of his game but got out to a decision he and many others, including broadcaster Sanjay Manjrekar, felt was wrong and taken in a rush.

India got all out on 150 inside two sessions on day one of the Perth Test.

The visitors were 47 for three when Mitchell Starc bowled a Jaffa to get rid of Rahul on 26. Everyone jumped up to celebrate his dismissal, with the hosts asking for a DRS call after the umpire adjudged it not out.

"So ideally, if there was a bat, as an edge to the ball, there should have been an earlier spike because clearly two events there and the umpire obviously heard one noise. The visual certainty was the bat hitting the pad. If that was the spike, then there wasn't an outside edge. If we were shown two spikes, then you could say the first one was the bat.
Gavaskar, a Test veteran, says Rohit likes taking on the bowler up front, something he needs to avoid doing early into the innings against the Aussies. But, if he can survive the first two or three overs, he can score runs. He needs to get the shot selection right. That's not just for Rohit Sharma but for any batter.”

Illness and injuries have hit the Australian camp ahead of the first ODI against England in Trent Bridge on Thursday (Sep 19), as the star trio of Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood are doubtful for the series opener.

A virus has swept through the visitor’s dugout, with T20I captain Mitchell Marsh missing the second T20I with a similar illness. Travis Head, who led the side in Marsh’s absence, wasn’t 100 per cent either but played through, per a report in Cricket Australia.

Starc and Maxwell joined the training camp before the first One-Dayer and trained in the nets before catching the virus. With keeper-batter Josh Inglis and opener Jake Fraser-McGurk battling injuries, Australia’s options are reduced drastically within their 17-man squad.

Inglis, who enjoyed limited outings on this UK Tour thus far, hasn’t kept wickets in the nets as he recovers from quad soreness; that, however, opened doors for Alex Carey, who will play his first ODI since getting dropped during the 2023 World Cup.

On the other hand, McGurk, who scored his maiden fifty in the first T20I and last appeared in the second game that the Aussies lost by three wickets, is also nursing a sore hamstring. Following passing the fitness test on Tuesday, the rookie batter batted for a little while in the nets.

Lack of first-team bowlers

With regular ODI Captain Pat Cummins rested for the entire England series and Starc and Hazlewood almost confirmed to miss out on the playing XI, Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshuis will play the first One-Dayer; all-rounders Cameron Green and Aaron Hardie will make up for the rest of the bowlers.

Matthew Short, who pressed his case as David Warner’s replacement in the white-ball squad, might start ahead of Maxwell in the Trent Bridge ODI.

With Marsh and Head recovering from the illness, both might start, while the Test pair of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne will come into the XI.

ALSO READ: English County side Essex fined £100,000 over racism at club between 2001-2010 Inglis, who enjoyed limited outings on this UK Tour thus far, hasn’t kept wickets in the nets as he recovers from quad soreness; that, however, opened doors for Alex Carey, who will play his first ODI since getting dropped during the 2023 World Cup. On the other hand, McGurk, who scored his maiden fifty in the first T20I and last appeared in the second game that the Aussies lost by three wickets, is also nursing a sore hamstring. Following passing the fitness test on Tuesday, the rookie batter batted for a little while in the nets. Lack of first-team bowlers With regular ODI Captain Pat Cummins rested for the entire England series and Starc and Hazlewood almost confirmed to miss out on the playing XI, Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshuis will play the first One-Dayer; all-rounders Cameron Green and Aaron Hardie will make up for the rest of the bowlers. "It's certainly a busy schedule, there will be times where we may have to manage guys through," Marsh said at a pre-series press conference before the extent of sickness was fully known.
While the Ashes is considered the best rivalry in cricketing history, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy *BGT) has also turned out to be one of the most-anticipated Test series in recent times due to India and Australia's fierce rivalry. Ahead of the 2024/25 BGT, Australia pacer Mitchell Starc feels Ashes and the India-Australia Tests are on par with each other, especially since the latter will now be a five-match series.

Speaking to the Wide World Sports website, Starc said, "Being five matches now it's probably right on par with an Ashes series. We always want to win every game at home and we know India are a very strong team."

Both India and Australia occupy the top two spots, respectively, in the current ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table, with high chances of meeting once again in the upcoming WTC final (to be held next year). In this regard, many believe the upcoming BGT will be a treat for ardent cricket fans.

Starc stated, "As we're placed at the minute we're the top two teams on the Test ladder... so a very exciting series coming up for the fans and certainly the players. "Hopefully when we're sitting there on the 8th of January we have that trophy back on our shores," he further added.

Notably, Australia have not won the BGT since 2014/15 edition, at home. Thus, Pat Cummins-led Aussies will be desperate to settle scores this time around in home conditions.

Rohit Sharma-led India will kick off their away series versus Australia on Nov 22 with the five-match Test series opener at Perth. The five Tests will also comprise a day-night match, in Adelaide, as India will look to retain the BGT for the fifth time in a row.

T20 WC: Mitchell Starc becomes most-prolific wicket-taker in World Cups, goes past Sri Lankan legend in tally

Australia pacer Mitchell Starc has lashed out at media for blowing fellow pacer Josh Hazlewood's comments out of proportion. The comments came after Australia beat Scotland in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 which ensured arch-rivals England a place in the Super Eight stage.

With Australia already qualified for the knockout stage, Hazlewood had said last week with it would be in 'best interest' of Australia to eliminate England at the group stage. It is to be noted that England needed a win over Namibia and a win for Australia over Scotland to make it to the knockout stage.

"I think a throwaway line has been blown right out of proportion by you lot (media)," Starc said at the post-match conference after Australia won against Scotland on Saturday (June 15).

T20 World Cup 2024: Australia pacer Mitchell Starc calls out media for 'dragging' Josh Hazlewood's comments

Australia in Super 8

Needing only a win to secure a Super 8 berth, Australia crushed Namibia in Antigua in a contest that lasted a little over two hours on the pitch. Bowling first, all of Australia’s frontline bowlers were on the wicket-takers list as they bowled out the minnows for 72 in 17 overs. Adam Zampa was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 12/4 in his four overs while Marcus Stoinis (9/2) and Josh Hazlewood (18/2) were also in great form with the ball.

Interestingly, only two Namibia batters got into double figures with Michael van Lingen scoring 10 and skipper Gerhard Erasmus amassing half of the team’s total with 36 runs.

Needing just 73 runs to win, the Aussies chased down the total in just 5.4 overs with Travis Head top-scoring with 34 runs while David Warner got out for 20. Mitchell Marsh remained unbeaten on 18 off 9 propelling Australia to their third win of the T20 World Cup.

T20 World Cup: Aussies secure Super 8 berth despite resting star names vs Namibia; SL on brink of elimination

Australia’s ODI and Test captain Pat Cummins might return to the playing XI for the first marquee game of this tournament against England in Barbados on Saturday (June 8). After being rested for the side’s opener against Oman, which Australia won by 39 runs, Cummins might replace Mitchell Starc in the XI, who left the field with discomfort in his hamstring. Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Ellis will retain their places in the side.

The Preview

The first big match of the 2024 T20 World Cup will take place in Barbados, with two former champions locking horns. Australia enters this contest with one more point than England, whose tournament opener against Scotland resulted in a washout.

While Australia’s win over Oman had many positives, including Warner and Stoinis’ form, they still have some worries to iron out.

Glenn Maxwell’s lean patch with the bat is the biggest of all. The ‘Big Show’, in his last 14 T20Is (for Australia and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL), has scored just 115 runs at a slim average of 8.21, including five scores of zeroes, two of which came in the previous two games where he got out on first-ball ducks.

On the other hand, England has had their set of issues, but the return of the pace bowling duo of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood looks like solving most of them.

Although against Scotland, England conceded 90 runs without picking a wicket, playing on the new surface against Australia, which is said to be the best on the square, might help them paint a better picture.

Captain Jos Buttler’s IPL form was stupendous, but even he needs to pull up his socks against the mighty Aussies. Besides, England has a newer middle order, with veteran Jonny Bairstow now playing at number four. Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran or Moeen Ali will consist of the lower-order batters, while Adil Rashid and Chris Jordan will complete the bowling attack.

Pitch and weather report

A new pitch will be on offer for this game, and weather conditions are said to be overcast, offering help for the seamers up-front.

Predicted Playing XIs of both teams –

England - Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (captain & wk), Will Jacks, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Jordan, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid and Mark Wood

Australia - David Warner, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh (captain), Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis (wk), Tim David, Pat Cummins, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood

Australia enters this contest with one more point than England, whose tournament opener against Scotland resulted in a washout. While Australia’s win over Oman had many positives, including Warner and Stoinis’ form, they still have some worries to iron out. ALSO READ: T20 World Cup: Indians vs India in New York - USA's Netravalkar opens up on facing Men in Blue Glenn Maxwell’s lean patch with the bat is the biggest of all. Pitch and weather report A new pitch will be on offer for this game, and weather conditions are said to be overcast, offering help for the seamers up-front. Predicted Playing XIs of both teams – England - Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (captain & wk), Will Jacks, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Jordan, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid and Mark Wood Australia - David Warner, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh (captain), Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis (wk), Tim David, Pat Cummins, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood

All eyes on Pat Cummins’ selection as Australia-England game takes centrestage in showpiece event

Australia might have bagged two crucial points with a convincing win over Oman in their T20 World Cup opener, but their fans and dressing room had a big issue to solve - Mitchell Starc’s injury scare. Starc walked away in discomfort in the second innings, casting doubts over his participation in the game against England on Saturday (June 8) in Barbados. Captain Mitchell Marsh provided an update later.

Speaking to the media after Australia’s 39-run win against Oman, Marsh said Starc suffered cramps while bowling and walked away straightaway to avoid getting aggravated. Marsh added that when Starc says he must leave the game midway, he will, saying he knows his body and what’s at stake in this year’s 20-team tournament.

Stoinis expects better pitches

Following the drama surrounding slow and non-supportive pitches on offer during this T20 WC in the Americas, the Player of the Match against Oman, Marcus Stoinis, said he expects the pitches to behave better as the tournament progresses.

Considering how the batters made batting look utterly easy with unbelievable stroke play during the recently-concluded IPL 2024, where the teams made 200-plus totals for fun, Stoinis said this showpiece event will be a different ball game, with old-school T20 cricket likely on display.

"Yeah, it is a bit difficult; the ball in the second inning, it is a bit sticky. And the spinners also gripping the ball sometimes, the ball is getting low," Stoinis said. "And when I played Maxwell, one or two balls maybe the wicket holds the ball, and it spins. So, it is still a bit difficult, but compared to the previous match, it's better.

"Today it's a better wicket. I hope the more matches we play in this wicket; the more wickets will go better," he continued.

Crediting this year's IPL stint for his flourishing outing against Oman on Thursday, Stoinis said regardless of anything, a player comes out as a better cricketer after an IPL season.

Worry mounts for Australia as Mitchell Starc suffers injury scare ahead of England tie at T20 World Cup

IPL Playoffs-bound Australian players, including Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell, are unhappy with the logistics failure upon their arrival in Barbados for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Following the IPL 2024 Final on May 26, the said players flew to Australia to rest before flying to the Caribbean for the 20-team tournament. Their journey, however, wasn’t the smoothest.

As per the latest reports, Cummins spent more than two days in transit from Sydney and the Caribbean, with his wife Becky revealing that they even lost their luggage along the way. Cummins is said to have received his cricket kit by now.

On the other hand, Maxwell and Starc also came across different challenges, as the pair had to spend two nights in the US (one in Los Angeles and the other in Miami) due to their flight delays. Moreover, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis couldn’t play the warm-up tie against the West Indies in Trinidad since his cricket gear failed to reach on time.

While most players feel drained with continuous travel and the issues that come with it, the feel-good factor is still intact in the squad, said the left-arm spinner Ashton Agar.

IPL 2024: Mitchell Starc justifies ‘costliest player’ tag with match-winning performance in final

Mitchell Starc returned to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after a nine-year-hiatus and won the IPL 2024 title while representing the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Joining the KKR franchise for a whopping INR 24.75 crore, Starc didn't have the best of starts but the Australian pacer was in top gear during the IPL playoffs. He ended with 3 for 34 in Qualifier 1, versus the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and bettered it with 2 for 14 in the final, on Sunday (May 26), versus the same opponent, to win the Player-of-the-Match award. After the IPL final win, Starc hinted at his ODI retirement in order to prolong his career in franchise cricket.

Having missed the IPL for several years, for national duty, Starc hinted at his retirement from one of the formats, mainly the 50-over format, to be more present in franchise leagues. At the post-match presentation, Starc said, "Last 9 years I have prioritised Australian cricket and IPL has been my time off and give my body a break and spend some time with my wife also. That's certainly been what the outlook has been for the last 9 years. Moving forward, look, certainly I am closer to the end of my career than the start, so, one format may drop off. It is a long time away, the next ODI World Cup and whether that format continues for me or not, it may open doors for more franchise cricket, so, I have thoroughly enjoyed this season, it leads into the World Cup, so that's the other side of it, the benefit of being here."

He further mentioned, "It is an amazing tournament with amazing players and the success has been fantastic."

Starc added, "Next year, I don't know the schedule exactly, but as I said, I enjoyed it and I look forward to being back next and hopefully it is purple and gold next year once again."

Starc made his IPL debut in 2014, playing for the then known as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He made a mark in 2014-15 but never showed up in any of the following seasons before joining KKR in 2024 and winning the trophy with them.

Mitchell Starc returned to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after a nine-year-hiatus and won the IPL 2024 title while representing the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

It is a long time away, the next ODI World Cup and whether that format continues for me or not, it may open doors for more franchise cricket, so, I have thoroughly enjoyed this season, it leads into the World Cup, so that's the other side of it, the benefit of being here." He further mentioned, "It is an amazing tournament with amazing players and the success has been fantastic." Starc made his IPL debut in 2014, playing for the then known as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He made a mark in 2014-15 but never showed up in any of the following seasons before joining KKR in 2024 and winning the trophy with them. Starc ended IPL 2024 with 17 wickets in 16 games at an average of 26.11. IPL Playoffs 2024, Qualifier 1: WATCH | KKR's Mitchell Starc sends back SRH opener Travis Head on duck

It was an evening of mixed fortunes for Mumbai Indians’ batter Ishan Kishan after he was offered a reality-check by Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) Mitchell Starc in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) on Friday (May 3). Chasing 170 runs Ishan did make a good start but was quickly brought down to earth having scored a six off Starc’s bowling. His wicket at the Wankhede Stadium saw the crowd go silent as the home side’s desperation for a win continued.

Ishan gets reality-check

Coming out to bat to chase 170, Ishan took the attack to Starc and hit a six on the leg side on the third ball of the second over. While this made the crowd ecstatic, it was the next delivery that brought everyone back to square one. In desperation for another six, Starc’s delivery caught Ishan by surprise as he failed to judge the flight and was bowled out on 13 off 7. Chasing 170 runs Ishan did make a good start but was quickly brought down to earth having scored a six off Starc’s bowling. Pointing out the reasons behind this, Pathan said on Star Sports, "Starc is at his best when he is swinging the ball in. When that looping swing starts to the right-hand batter, it can be lethal. And I haven’t seen that in the last two games.
“He is a left-hand fast bowler who can bowl at 145+ kmph. There's nothing like a ball swinging back into a right-handed batsman. It’s one of the hardest balls to face. So I’d like to see that first and use that one as a variation to trying to nick off from them," Smith said.

Although Starc went for runs in the previous match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), KKR won the game with seven wickets in hand. Kolkata has won both matches and will face Delhi Capitals in Vizag on April 3.

Mitchell Starc receives backing from legends over horrendous start to IPL 2024

For the first time in IPL history, two modern-day greats – Virat Kohli and Mitchell Starc, will go up against each other when RCB hosts KKR in game 10 of IPL 2024 on Friday (March 29). Having faced each other countless times since Starc’s international debut more than a decade ago, the two giants of world cricket will finally face off in this premier T20 competition. Starc’s national-side teammate, Steve Smith, feels Kohli will be aware of the challenge against his formidable opponent.

The left-arm seamer, who last took on India great during the 2023 World Cup final, where Australia won the contest for the record sixth time, failed to pick his wicket then. However, Starc’s last IPL run came in 2014 and 2015 with the RCB under Kohli's captaincy.

Speaking ahead of another blockbuster tie in IPL 2024, Smith said he is looking forward to watching this mouth-watering clash between Kohli and Starc, saying both must have their plans ready to tackle the other. However, spotting Kohli’s weakness against the incoming ball, mostly via a left-arm seamer, Smith feels Starc would like to take advantage of it.

"I quite like [Starc's] match-up to Virat, the ability to swing the ball back down the line as a lefty," Steve Smith said.

"We have seen him [Kohli] get out on a few occasions to Shaheen Afridi, Trent Boult and Mohammad Amir. In the first game against Punjab Kings, Kohli had an opportunity off Sam Curran dropped at slip. So I quite like the left-handed match-up,” Smith added.

How will Starc get Kohli out?

Detailing further on Starc’s possible plan against Kohli, Smith said Starc loves bringing the new ball back and doing that upfront or getting him nicked off a wobble seam.

However, he also talked about how Virat can attack Starc by just coming down the line to him, disallowing the ball to move enough early on.

"Starcy's going to swing the ball back down the line early on, I'd imagine, and then use the wobble seam to go across him [Kohli], and potentially try and nick him off," Smith said.

"It's going to be a good game, and I'm aware Virat would know how Starc's trying to attack him as well - whether he tries to potentially come down the track [to] just take the swing out of play [we'll see]. It's going to be interesting to see how he counters it,” Smith continued.

Although both are yet to face off in this competition, Starc hasn’t dismissed Kohli in T20s (international and now-defunct Champions League), leaking 47 runs.

"I will say this: hopefully, I don't have to face Starc because that means our batters have done quite well. It's funny... it's one of the beauties of the IPL; I have been playing with Starcy for 15 years, [and] I can't remember another game where I have played against him. Also, it's going to be weird looking across and seeing him in the other dugout," Cummins said in the pre-match press conference.

After being signed for a whopping $2.5 million by SRH, Cummins was awarded the captaincy ahead of Aiden Markram and will now have a point to prove. SRH finished rock-bottom and will be ready to make amends for this term. They have a new set of coaching staff which will be another key factor if they are to turn their fortunes.

"Yeah, being an opposition captain, seeing how we go about playing him will be an interesting part of tomorrow. But we're both bowlers, so I am not sure we'll cross [paths] too much," Cummins added.
