Manchester United are finally getting close to signing Andre Onana after the player arrived for medical tests on Wednesday, July 19. United, without a first-choice goalkeeper after David de Gea’s departure, are looking to seal a deal for the Champions League runner-up who is estimated to cost more than a whopping $50 million. The player is undergoing medicals at the Carrington training ground of the 20-time league champions and will join Mason Mount in another big-money arrival.

Onana set for United

United manager Erik ten Hag has been behind the goalkeeper for a long time having coached him at his former club Ajax. He kept eight clean sheets in the Champions League, most by any goalkeeper in the tournament last season.

After the departure of De Gea, Ten Hag was firm on getting the player and is now ready to move for other options and departments in the transfer market. Onana made 24 Serie A appearances while making a total of 41 in all competitions.

Premier League: Marcus Rashford pens five-year extension at Manchester United amid PSG interest

Former Manchester United footballer and ex-Wales manager Ryan Giggs was on Tuesday (July 18) cleared of teh allegations of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and her sister. The development comes as a huge relief for the ex-footballer after charges were pulled out by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) at a hearing at Manchester Crown Court.

The 48-year-old Giggs had denied all such claims of assaulting Kate Greville and her sister Emma. Judge Hilary Manley directed that he was not guilty on all three counts. It is to be noted that the retrial had been due to kick off at Manchester Crown Court on 31 July.

Giggs was cleared of all charges after Kate Greville withdrew her co-operation from the case ahead of a scheduled re-trial in two weeks' time. Giggs had faced up to five years in jail if convicted. Jurors failed to agree on their verdicts following a trial held last August.

Giggs was not in court when the decision was announced.

In August 2022, the jurors failed to reach verdicts after more than 20 hours of deliberations in Giggs' four-week trial. Back then, the judge had given his consent that the ex-Wales manager does not need to be in attendance for the deliberations.

Giggs' defence barrister, Chris Daw KC stated after the latest decision, "Mr Giggs is deeply relieved that the case has finally come to an end after almost three years of fighting to clear his name. He now intends to rebuild his life and career as an innocent man."

The Red Devils' legend Giggs did admit that he was unfaithful in his relationship with Kate, however, he denied accepting charges of physically assaulting any woman.
After a lengthy court battle, Giggs has finally been acquitted of all the charges and will be a relieved man. The former football is regarded as one of the finest of Man United, having made as many as 963 appearances for them and scoring 168 goals. He also represented Wales in 64 games and went on to serve as their manager for an interim period before being arrested in June 2022 with regard to the serious charges put forward by his ex-girlfriend.

In addition, he even rejected claims of 'losing control' and headbutting his ex-girlfriend as well as assaulting her 26-year-old sister Emma by elbowing her in the jaw during a row at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester on 1 November 2020.
Harry Maguire announced on Sunday he is no longer captain of Manchester United following talks with manager Erik ten Hag.

Reports earlier this month suggested Ten Hag was set to remove the England international from the role following Maguire's limited appearances under the Dutch boss last season.
Football’s European governing body UEFA fined Manchester United and Barcelona for breaching the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules on Friday, July 14. The clubs were under the scanner of UEFA in recent times and were fined for violating the rules in the 2022-23 season. While it is not a big setback for the clubs, both United and Barcelona will be aware of the long-term consequences of the situation. Barcelona were banned from registering players in the past during the transfer window while United’s city rivals and defending European Champions Manchester City also faced sanctions in 2020.

What is the fine?

The Red Devils are fined $335,000 for failing to meet the break-even requirement that attempts to limit the losses made by clubs. While Spanish champions Barcelona are fined $561,840 for including profits from sales of intangible assets, which are not relevant income under the regulations, to balance their books. UEFA’s sanctions though are not a major obstacle for either side as they are likely to spend a big chunk of the sum in the ongoing summer transfer window.

Manchester City 2020 were banned from competing in European competitions for two years. However, City decided to appeal the verdict of UEFA which was consequently overturned in favour of City in the same year. City would later make the Champions League final in 2021 before they lost in the final against Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea.

Football giants Manchester United, Barcelona fined by UEFA over FFP breaches

It will be officially an end of an era at Manchester United after goalkeeper David de Gea confirmed his departure from the 20-time English football champions on Saturday, July 8. De Gea’s departure officially means that no player in the current squad has won the Premier League title for Manchester United, with Phil Jones earlier confirming his exit. Manchester United are now likely to sign Andre Onana from Inter Milan, who has been the likely name to replace the Spaniard.

De Gea confirms exit

Signed in 2011, De Dea was Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-choice goalkeeper after the exit of now-ill Edwin van der Sar and carried the flag of the club for 12 years during which he also served for the national side. He was part of the Manchester United team that won the Premier League title in 2013 under Sir Alex Ferguson. He would help the club win the FA Cup in 2016, League Cup, and Europa League in 2017 while he also played a pivotal role in the club’s domestic success last campaign.

There were speculations regarding the 32-year-old over signing a new contract but his departure on Saturday did not come as a surprise to many. United submitted a bid to sign Onana from Inter Milan this week and will now be the club’s first-choice option to sign.

De Gea was part of the plans of manager Erik ten Hag after he took over the reins of the side in 2022 and featured prominently throughout the season. However, with the player reluctant to sign a new deal, the club decided to step into the market for a new goalkeeper with Onana now a priority signing.

Glorious times with the club

At the time of departure, De Gea represented United in 415 Premier League matches and played in every single match in the last two campaigns. In total he made 545 appearances for the club, winning both domestic and European honours with the side. He kept 148 clean sheets for the side and was a feature of the side during the transition of the club after Sir Alex’s retirement.

He famously missed a penalty in the 2021 Europa League final against Villareal in the shootout that saw United finish runners-up after all 21 penalties were scored.

The Spanish shot-stopper is now likely to return to his native Spain with a number of clubs still likely to sign him. Manchester United's legendary goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar in hospital after suffering from brain hemorrhage

After being roped in by Manchester United in the transfer window, on Wednesday (July 05), Mason Mount revealed that he had a fair idea, over the last few months that he wasn't in the scheme of things for Chelsea moving forward; prompting him to make a switch. The 24-year-old midfielder made as many as 279 appearances for Chelsea, where he found the back of the net on 58 occasions and contributed with 53 assists. In addition, the youngster was the club's Player of the Year for both the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.

Shedding light on his decision to move from Chelsea to Man United, Mount explained while speaking to MUTV, "I think, over the last several months, it became clear that I wasn't in the plans moving forward [at Chelsea] and, once I knew that United was involved, my decision was made up."

Further, Mount opened up on joining the Red Devils. "It’s a massive club with huge, iconic players that have played here. I wanted to be a part of that from the beginning. And obviously getting in early, ready for pre-season to start, was a main objective of mine as well."

On being presented with jersey number seven, Mount said, "So many iconic players [have played for United]. They've played for this club and, watching them as a youngster and also being a fan of theirs, it's very special to obviously now be here. This is what I worked a long, long time for as a little kid, for this moment here, and, going forward into the future, it's so exciting for myself."

'I couldn't be more excited for the seasons ahead'

After shifting from Chelsea, Mason shared a statement where he stated, "It's never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career. Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I'm joining, and I can't wait to be part of this group's drive to win major trophies. Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn't be more excited for the seasons ahead, and am ready for the hard work expected here."

Meanwhile, United football director John Murtough opined, "Mason is an extremely intelligent footballer and has so many fantastic technical qualities that will significantly add to our squad. We have admired his talents for a long time, so we are delighted that he has chosen to take the next steps in his career here at Old Trafford. We were particularly impressed by his strong desire to join United, and his thirst for further success, as we push to drive up our performance levels next season and beyond."

Shedding light on his decision to move from Chelsea to Man United, Mount explained while speaking to MUTV, "I think, over the last several months, it became clear that I wasn't in the plans moving forward [at Chelsea] and, once I knew that United was involved, my decision was made up." Further, Mount opened up on joining the Red Devils. "It’s a massive club with huge, iconic players that have played here. I wanted to be a part of that from the beginning. And obviously getting in early, ready for pre-season to start, was a main objective of mine as well." On being presented with jersey number seven, Mount said, "So many iconic players [have played for United]. They've played for this club and, watching them as a youngster and also being a fan of theirs, it's very special to obviously now be here. This is what I worked a long, long time for as a little kid, for this moment here, and, going forward into the future, it's so exciting for myself." Also Read: French police raid PSG boss Nasser Al-Khelaifi over lobbyist's torture claims 'I couldn't be more excited for the seasons ahead' After shifting from Chelsea, Mason shared a statement where he stated, "It's never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career. Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I'm joining, and I can't wait to be part of this group's drive to win major trophies. Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn't be more excited for the seasons ahead, and am ready for the hard work expected here." Meanwhile, United football director John Murtough opined, "Mason is an extremely intelligent footballer and has so many fantastic technical qualities that will significantly add to our squad. We have admired his talents for a long time, so we are delighted that he has chosen to take the next steps in his career here at Old Trafford. We were particularly impressed by his strong desire to join United, and his thirst for further success, as we push to drive up our performance levels next season and beyond." Man United had a mixed run in the 2022-23 season. They ended third in the EPL 2022/23 edition, won the Carabao Cup, ended runners-up in the FA Cup and faced a quarter-final exit in the Europa League. It will be interesting to see how Mount fits into United's scheme of things. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
Mount saga to end?

The deal will see Manchester United pay $76 million upfront and will become the club’s first high-profile signing before the start of pre-season. The club chased Mount since the start of the window and looked out of plans under new boss Pochettino. Earlier this week, United had seen their bid rejected for the 24-year-old, but now the deal appears to be over the line. Mount could join United in the pre-season and could be presented before the end of the week.

The deal is reported to be $69 million as a transfer fee and the rest of the amount to be paid as an add-on if Mount helps the Red Devils end their Premier League or Champions League drought. As things stand, United are without a league title since 2013 while they last won the Champions League in 2008.

United still in the market

Erik ten Hag’s side is still in the market as they try to get big-name players having returned to the Champions League. United are now expected to turn their attention to other transfer deals that could see them land a striker. United’s primary target at the start of the window was England captain Harry Kane, but any deal is far from done as Spurs are reluctant to let go of their star man.

On the other hand, they are also interested in signing Napoli’s Serie A winning striker Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian landed the Golden Boot in Serie A last season and is top of the list in transfer targets.

Chelsea clearout continues

The deal agreed with United will see another member of the Champions League winning side from 2021 leave the club. Earlier, N’Golo Kante, Kai Havertz, and Édouard Mendy had departed West London. FA Cup Final: 'We do not fear Haaland,' says Manchester United defender Raphael Varane ahead of title clash

All roads lead from Manchester to Wembley Stadium on Saturday for the first-ever FA Cup final between the city's archrivals. For Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, a first FA Cup triumph since 2019 would put them one game away from repeating Manchester United's feat of winning the English Premier League, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League. As for Manchester United, who have already secured Champions League football for next season, it represents the chance to finish the season with two trophies, having already lifted the League Cup in February. It would represent an impressive first season at the helm for Dutch coach Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United back in Champions League with 4-1 rout of Chelsea

Football - List of teams with most Premier League Titles

Manchester United and Newcastle are on the brink of qualifying for next season's Champions League after Liverpool's 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, while Everton remain in relegation danger despite their dramatic 1-1 draw at Wolves on Saturday. United's 1-0 victory at Bournemouth, combined with Liverpool's failure to beat Villa, left Erik ten Hag's men and Newcastle within touching distance of ensuring Premier League top four finishes.

Man Utd, Newcastle on top four brink

Fourth-placed United and Newcastle, in third, are both three points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool, who have only one game left. Newcastle can seal their spot with a draw or win against Leicester on Monday or Chelsea on May 28. United take their turn at securing the lucrative top four place against Chelsea on Thursday and Fulham next weekend.

Liverpool's final game of the season is against relegated Southampton, but although they have a superior goal difference to United if they finish level on points, they are likely to have to settle for a place in the Europa League. At the Vitality Stadium, United took the lead in the ninth minute when Casemiro spun to meet Christian Eriksen's cross with an acrobatic bicycle kick from close-range.

United were unbeaten in their previous 134 league matches when leading at half-time and that remarkable sequence continued as they held firm after the interval. At Anfield, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was watching from the stands as he served a touchline ban following his recent rant about referee Paul Tierney. Villa wasted a 22nd-minute penalty when Ollie Watkins fired wide after the striker was brought down by Ibrahima Konate. Despite Watkins' miss, Unai Emery's team went ahead in the 27th minute through Jacob Ramsey's volley from Douglas Luiz's cross.

Roberto Firmino and James Milner, set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, came on for their Anfield farewells in the closing stages. And it was Brazilian forward Firmino who rescued a point with his close-range finish in stoppage-time.

Everton drama

Yerry Mina's last-gasp equaliser boosted Everton's hopes of avoiding playing in the second tier for the first time since 1954.

Sean Dyche's men fell behind after 34 minutes when Adama Traore's shot was pushed out to Hwang Hee-chan, who netted from close-range.

Mina bundled in Everton's leveller nine minutes into stoppage-time to leave the fourth bottom Toffees two points above the relegation zone.

Third bottom Leeds would go above Everton with a win at West Ham on Sunday, while second bottom Leicester would also leapfrog Dyche's team if they beat Newcastle on Monday.

Third bottom Leeds would go above Everton with a win at West Ham on Sunday, while second bottom Leicester would also leapfrog Dyche's team if they beat Newcastle on Monday. Premier League: Phil Jones to part ways with Manchester United, set to end 12-year association with club

Qatar's Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani has come up with a much better final offer to remain in the bid and be a step ahead of his main rival, British petrochemicals billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, in order to buy Manchester United as reported by The Times. It is to be noted that the Glazers, who currently own the Red Devils, put the club up for sale in November 2022.

It is reported that the new offer by Sheikh Jassim, on Tuesday, is closer to a whopping five billion pounds. In addition, the Qatari sheikh -- who is the chairman of one of his country's biggest banks; known as the Qatar Islamic Bank -- is offering to buy 100 percent of the stakes. As per reports in the British media, the offer is surely a competitive one including clearing nearly 1 billion pounds worth of club debt along with also having a separate fund to revamp Old Trafford, the surrounding area and the club's Carrington training ground.

Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe made their third and final offers to buy Manchester United on Friday. Sheikh Jassim is in a bidding war with Ratcliffe after the pair emerged as the main contenders to buy the Premier League club from the Glazer family.

While Sheikh Jassim's latest offer is reported to be over £5 billion ($6.2 billion), the size of Ratcliffe's improved bid was yet to be made public when Friday's deadline for the third round of bidding passed at 2100 GMT.

Sources said Sheikh Jassim's bid for 100 percent control of the club comes with the promise of significant additional funding for transfers and infrastructure. The spending would include either redeveloping United's out-dated Old Trafford stadium or build a new ground, along with overhauling the club's training facilities.

That would allow United's executive co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer to remain as shareholders with a 20 percent stake, which has raised concerns among a fanbase tired of the Americans' controversial reign.

The Glazers reportedly want a world record £6 billion fee for a sports club before they agree to sell the Old Trafford outfit, raising the possibility they might not accept either Sheikh Jassim's offer or Ratcliffe's approach.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group third bid for Manchester United has also been submitted. 🚨🔴 #MUFC pic.twitter.com/m8vIkElKsX — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) April 28, 2023 × That would allow United's executive co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer to remain as shareholders with a 20 percent stake, which has raised concerns among a fanbase tired of the Americans' controversial reign. The Glazers reportedly want a world record £6 billion fee for a sports club before they agree to sell the Old Trafford outfit, raising the possibility they might not accept either Sheikh Jassim's offer or Ratcliffe's approach. Deeply unpopular with supporters since they saddled the club with debt in a £790 million leveraged takeover in 2005, the Glazers appeared ready to cash out at an enormous profit when they first invited external investment in November. However, Elliot Investment Management and The Carlyle Group are among the private equity firms in the market for a minority stake that could allow the Glazers to retain control and provide the funding for investment in the club's infrastructure. Avram and Joel Glazer are reportedly keen to hold on to their stakes in United, while siblings and fellow directors Kevin, Bryan and Edward Glazer and Darcie Glazer Kassewitz are open to offloading their shares.
