News agency ANI quoted VCM parliamentarian Thol. Thirumavalavan who said that Banerjee, along with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made the proposal favouring Kharge to be the PM face and co-ordinator of the INDIA bloc. Thirumavalan said that Kharge rejected the proposal.

Kerala Congress leader PJ Joseph however has said that Banerjee Didi not take any names and pressed for a 'Dalit PM'.&nbsp;

"She did not suggest so. While she spoke, Mamata Banerjee said that it would be good if we could project a Dalit PM. She did not say the name of any person. The matter was not discussed much because she spoke last," Joseph told ANI.

Kharge, who is former Union minister, is from the Dalit community.&nbsp;

Renowned Bengali filmmaker and theatre personality Goutam Halder died of cardiac arrest here on Friday. He was 67.

Halder died at a private hospital, where he was admitted after complaining of chest pain at his Salt Lake residence in the morning, sources in the Bengali film industry said.

He had directed around 80 stage plays, including Rabindranath Tagore’s Rakta Karabi recently. Halder had made his first Bengali film Bhalo Theko in 2003, with actor Vidya Balan in the lead role. He also directed Nirvana with Rakhi Gulzar in the lead role in 2019.

Expressing grief over his death, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in a statement, "Saddened by the demise of distinguished film director and theatre personality Goutam Halder. His demise is a great loss to the world of culture."

Family friend and actor Chaiti Ghosal, who was cast in Halder's Rakta Karabi, wrote on social media, "Famous theatre personality and film director Gautam Halder is no more. My deepest respect to you. He was my mentor in the world of theatre."

Halder had also made a documentary, Strings for Freedom, on Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan in 1999.

This time, Banerjee ended up saying that Indira Gandhi, India's prime minister when Indian Air Force's Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma went to space, also reached the Moon herself during that time.&nbsp;

Recalling India's first journey to space during Indira Gandhi's government, Mamata Banerjee said, "When Indira Gandhi reached the Moon, she asked Rakesh how Hindustan (India) looks from there. He replied 'Saare jahaan se achcha' (The best in the world)."

She made the comments while addressing a rally on the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) Foundation Day, the student wing of the Trinamool Congress party.&nbsp;

The space mission that Mamata Banerjee referred to did not entail any lunar objectives. The Soyuz T-11 space mission, which had Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma and five other Soviet nationals, was meant for outer space.

What Banerjee perhaps meant to point out was India's achievement in outer space when Indira Gandhi was prime minister but ended up blending the space mission with the lunar one.

'When Indira Gandhi reached the Moon', Indian politician Mamata Banerjee makes another lunar faux pas

Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) pulled off a spectacular victory in West Bengal rural polls, as it established an unassailable lead over its rival Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).

According to the state Election Commission’s data till 10:30 pm on Tuesday, TMC was leading in 28,985 gram panchayat seats, the BJP won 7,764 seats, whereas the Communist Party of India (Marxist) won 2,409 seats and the Congress won 2,022 seats. The counting is still underway.

The elections were hugely anticipated by many as they were considered the bell weather for the 2024 general elections.

The counting of votes for the three-tier panchayat polls, which saw a multi-front battle for 74,000 seats, began on Tuesday morning.

<h2>Violence across West Bengal</h2>

The election was marred with violence and at least 15 people lost their lives. The polling body had to announce re-elections on 696 booths on Monday amid allegations of ballot box tampering.

The situation was no different on Tuesday morning, as local media reported that bombs were hurled near a counting centre in Murshidabad and the police resorted to baton-charge to control crowds in Howrah.

<h2>Mamata thanks people</h2>

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee thanked the people of West Bengal for the TMC's huge win in the panchayat elections.

"It's TMC all the way in rural Bengal. I want to thank the people for their love, affection, and support towards the TMC. This election has proved that only TMC resides in the heart of the people of the state," Banerjee said in a Facebook post.

Senior TMC leader and Mamata’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee also thanked the people of rural West Bengal for handing the party a spectacular victory.

Taking a dig at the leader of the opposition, BJP‘s Suvendu Adhikari, he said the campaign of "No Vote to Mamata" has turned into "Now Vote for Mamata".

"Grateful to the people for converting Oppn's 'NO VOTE TO MAMATA' campaign to 'NOW VOTE FOR MAMATA.' With unwavering support to #TrinamooleNaboJowar, we'll surely have a roaring mandate, paving the way for LS elections. Bengal, I thank you for all the love (sic)," he tweeted.

<h2>BJP blames TMC for violence</h2>

The BJP, on the other hand, accused the state government of using violence to its advantage to win the elections.

“We have no hope from this election (panchayat election) after the kind of violence that took place earlier. This is not a mandate because Mamta Banerjee's goons forcefully got the polls done. The central security force was not allowed to reach, and there were no CCTVs in the polling stations. We have lost in many centres by 2,4,24 votes. Our victory in West Bengal is that people are coming on the road to defeat TMC,” West Bengal BJP General Secretary Agnimitra Paul said.

Reports of massive political violence have emerged from India’s eastern state of West Bengal, where crucial local elections are taking place ahead of the general election slated to be held next year. Zee News reported at least 14&nbsp;people dead as rural West Bengal voted for the&nbsp;three-tier panchayat elections. Among the dead were six workers of the ruling Trinamool Congress, one worker each of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Left, Congress and ISF, and another person whose political identity could not be known. Although, the BJP claimed that the death toll had reached 15, but there was no such confirmation from the state authorities till the filing of this report.

The state has been reeling under political violence since the elections were announced on June 8.&nbsp;

West Bengal, which is ruled by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of Trinamool Congress (TMC), has had a long history of political violence taking place during election season. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which sits in opposition in the state, has long accused the TMC of harbouring political ‘goons’.

As reports of violence surfaced in the state on Saturday, BJP state chief Sukanta Majumdar accused a TMC candidate of murdering an independent Muslim candidate. 
 
Majumdar tweeted, “Bloodshed in West Bengal in Panchayat Election. TMC candidate killed an independent Muslim candidate in North 24, Parganas dist. TMC knows only language of violence, murder and booth capturing. CM @MamataOfficial along with @CEOWestBengal is responsible for these murders."

State Governor CV Ananda Bose also condemned the violence, saying that an election day should be considered “most sacred for democracy” and that elections should take place through ballots and not bullets.

"I have been in the field right from the morning...People requested me and stopped my motorcade on the way. They told me about the murders happening around them, told me about the goons not allowing them to go to the polling booths...It should cause concern to all of us. This is the most sacred day for democracy...The election must be through ballots and not bullets," he was quoted as saying by local media.

While political violence in the world’s largest democracy has reduced over the past two decades, it still remains rampant in West Bengal. In previous local polls held in 2018, TMC won uncontested 34 per cent of the total seats after a series of deadly political violence against opponents.

India: Bullets defeat ballots? 14 killed in West Bengal on local elections day

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sent 600 kg of mangoes as a gift to chief minister of Indian state West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, said officials in High Commission of Bangladesh, reported Press Trust of India. Reports in other Indian media outlets said that in addition to West Bengal CM, the mangoes were also sent to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. West Bengal CM had sent mangoes to PM Hasina six days ago.

A press note from the High Commission of Bangladesh in Kolkata said that the mangoes were handpicked specially for the Indian side from the orchards of Rajshahi region which is famous for its delicious crop.&nbsp;

India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had gifted mangoes to China's Mao Zedong.

The mango diplomacy has been also observed in domestic politics of India. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has in past gifted Himsagar mangoes to her political opponents to cool the tempers. 'Himsagar' aptly means 'an ocean of soothing ice'.

Mango diplomacy: Bangladesh PM gifts mangoes to PM Modi, Bengal CM Banerjee

In West Bengal, India, an explosion at an illegal firecracker unit has killed nine people while 13 others are critically injured as per reports. Local police told media that the impact of the explosion was "so massive" that the residential building on which the factory was being run collapsed.

Villagers described the scene as something of a "war zone", with body parts and debris strewn all around, including in a nearby pond. While the official toll remains low, locals claim that over 20 have perished in the blast.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, "The illegal firecracker unit was functioning at a house in a village near the West Bengal-Odisha border. Five people were killed and seven others were critically injured in the blast."&nbsp;

The factory was located in Egra of Purba Medinipur district in West Bengal.

As per Banerjee, the firecrackers were "being sent to Odisha and local labourers were working there." She also stated that&nbsp;"an investigation is underway". The probe is being undertaken by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The Trinamool Congress leader has announced that the next of kin of the deceased will get a compensation of INR 2.5 lakh each (USD 3,040 approx), while the injured will get INR 1 lakh (around USD 1,200).

The owner of the factory was reportedly arrested last October for running the factory and is now on the run. He is believed to have fled to the neighbouring state of Odisha after the explosion.

"He was arrested in October last year but got bail from the court. He fled the state soon after the explosion. I will ask the police to share his details with their counterparts in Odisha so that he is arrested immediately," said Banerjee.

As per the chief minister, action will be taken against the local police chief of Egra police station as "he had no information that an illegal firecracker unit was operating" in the area.

Leader of Opposition and senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has demanded a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the explosion.

Reacting to the demand, Banerjee said, "We do not have any objection to the NIA probe. But I would like to point out that the probe by the CID has already started."

Expressing fear that state police might illegally shift the bodies, Adhikari also demanded that central forces be immediately deployed in the area.

I am receiving news from the ground that the number of casualties is enormous. Immediately, central forces should be deployed as dead bodies are being shifted illegally by Mamata Police," he alleged in a tweet.

"I urge @HMOIndia &amp; Hon'ble @BengalGovernor to initiate @NIA_India investigation as early as possible. Bengal has become the stockpile of explosives...," he said in another tweet.

The West Bengal government banned The Kerala Story to 'maintain peace' in the state. While making the announcement Banerjee also alleged that The Kashmir Files was funded by BJP- the ruling party of India.&nbsp;

Helmed by Sudipto Sen, the film, which is said to be inspired by true events, is set in Kerala and revolves around a group of college-going girls who are converted to Islam and sent to the extremist Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

The movie stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, Pranay Pachuri, and Chandra Shekhar Dutta, among others, in pivotal roles. The movie has received severe backlash from a particular section of society, who have&nbsp;claimed that the film was only made to spread hatred. Many political leaders echo the same view.

Despite all the backlash&nbsp;the film has received, it opened to a great response from the audience. Within three days of its release, the film has collected Rs 35 crore at the domestic box office.

Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of Indian state of West Bengal reacted strongly after the scuffle at New Delhi's Jantar Mantar where some of India's top&nbsp;women wrestlers are protesting. The protesting wrestlers have alleged that they were manhandled by the Delhi Police in early hours of Thursday (May 4).&nbsp;

"Don't dare to hurt our wrestlers," Banerjee said.

"Disrobing the honour of our daughters in this manner is utterly shameful. India stands by its daughters and I as a human being definitely stand by our wrestlers. Law is one for all. `Law of the ruler` can`t hijack the dignity of these fighters. You can assault them but can`t break their spirit. The fight is right and the fight will continue. Don`t dare to hurt our wrestlers, the nation is watching their tears and the nation won`t forgive you. I urge our wrestlers to stay strong, I share all my strength with them," the chief minister`s Twitter message read.

'Don't dare,' Mamata Banerjee warns detractors after Indian women wrestlers burst into tears

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday (March 2) said that the state has reported two adenovirus cases and 10 cases with pulmonary haemorrhage syndrome. Banerjee added that there is no need to panic and the government has done necessary preparation in advance with arrangements for 5,000 beds. She urged parents to take special care of children up to two years.&nbsp;

Banerjee told reporters: "Of the 12 (recent) cases, two resulted from adenovirus infections. The rest were due to comorbidities. Some had pulmonary haemorrhages, some suffered from weight loss. There is nothing to be afraid of? We have readied 5,000 beds and 600 doctors have been tasked with the responsibility of dealing with such cases."&nbsp;

India-based news agency PTI reported that a senior health official said on Thursday that seven children died due to respiratory infection in West Bengal in the last 24 hours.&nbsp;

In a statement, the government said 12 adenovirus deaths have been reported in the state so far and eight of them had comorbidities. However, the government did not term the deaths due to adenovirus.&nbsp;

They instead said that acute respiratory infections (ARI) were common during the ongoing season. The state health authorities said, "There is no evidence of viral epidemic at present."&nbsp;

<h2>What is Adenovirus?&nbsp;</h2>

Experts have described adenoviruses as medium-sized, non-enveloped viruses with an icosahedral nucleocapsid containing a double-stranded DNA genome. It is said that their name derives from their initial isolation from human adenoids in 1953.&nbsp;

Doctors said that children in the age group of 0-2 are considered most vulnerable to the infection. Older children are less susceptible to the virus. Experts also said that most of the cases are treatable at home. In children, adenovirus usually causes infections in the respiratory and intestinal tracts.&nbsp;

<h2>Doctors alarmed in West Bengal&nbsp;</h2>

A senior official of ICMR-NICED in Kolkata told Hindustan Times: "Around 32% of the samples sent to us since January tested positive for adenovirus. In December it was 22%. Usually, it ranges below 10%. We are planning to send some samples for genome sequencing."&nbsp;

As quoted by the same media outlet, Siddhartha Niyogi, director of health services in West Bengal, said, "There is no scarcity of paediatric beds in hospitals. It is only that the cases have become concentrated in some hospitals, one of them being the BC Roy Post Graduate Institute of Paediatric Sciences."&nbsp;

Samar 'Badru' Banerjee, who led the country to a historic fourth-place finish in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, died here in the early hours of Saturday after a prolonged illness. He was 92. Banerjee is survived by his daughter-in-law. Fondly known as 'Badru Da', he was suffering from Alzheimer's, Azotemia and high-blood pressure-related ailments.

The Indian football teams have participated in three Olympics so far and till date, the performance of Banerjee-led 1956 side remains the best, when they finished fourth after losing to Bulgaria 0-3 in the bronze medal playoff, in what was known as the 'golden era' of football in the country.

Mamata Banerjee offers Samar Banerjee's family her condolences, expresses sorrow on his demise

For a small-time actor Arpita Mukherjee, who has mostly played side roles in a few Indian films in her career, the rise has been meteoric. Mukherjee has been in news for the past week after she was arrested last Friday in Kolkata by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Raids were conducted last week at her plush south Kolkata apartment and the ED seized Rs 280 million&nbsp;(approx&nbsp; 3.5 million USD) from her flat which was suspected to be proceeds of kickbacks in the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment scam. Mukherjee is known to be a close associate of Trinamool Congress party leader and state minister Partha Chatterjee- a co-accussed in the case.&nbsp;

“This is a plan to bring the army under RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) control and use the 75% (out of the 10 lakh) who come out of the army and will be spread out around the country. Is the Agnipath scheme to create Agniveer’s a ploy to implement the same measures (agenda),” he said according to PTI.

But, the Salem District Secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has taken things to an all-new level. His three sons born after the 1990s have been named Communism, Leninism and Socialism, as a tribute to the erstwhile Soviet Union. 
 
The names of these men have shot to popularity thanks to the wedding invitation of their youngest brother - Socialism, who is a silversmith. The to-be bride's name has also caught people attention - as the invitation reads Socialism weds Mamata Banerjee. 
 
The bride’s family were Congress loyalists and hence on having a girl child about 20 years back, they named their daughter after the up and coming leader from West Bengal. Even though they are divergent by political ideology, the families of the bride and groom are closely related to each other.&nbsp;

PM Modi undertakes aerial survey of cyclone-hit Odisha, West Bengal

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee took oath as chief minister of Bengal for the third time today.&nbsp;

On Monday, she had met governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to stake claim to form the next government.&nbsp;

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar administered her the oath of office and secrecy at a low-key ceremony at Raj Bhawan held amid the raging COVID pandemic.

Banerjee took the oath in the Bengali language.

Apart from senior TMC leaders like Partha Chatterjee and Subrata Mukherjee, poll strategist Prashant Kishor, who played a key role in TMC's victory, and Banerjee MP nephew Abhishek Banerjee were present.

In 126-member Assam assembly, BJP has won 47 seats and is leading on 12. Its alliance partner AGP has won nine seats and UPPL six seats. In Mahajot alliance, Congress won 21 seats and is leading on eight, AIUDF won ten seats and is leading on six, CPI-M won one seat and BPF won three seats and is leading on one. Independents won one seat and are leading on another.

Puducherry

In 30-member Puducherry assembly, NR Congress won 10 seats and BJP six. DMK has won five seats and is leading on one, Congress won two seats and independents six seats. AIADMK failed to open its account.

Tamil Nadu

The DMK-led alliance scored an emphatic win in Tamil Nadu. According to the latest trends from the Election Commission, DMK has already won 62 seats and is leading on 71 in the 234-member assembly.AIADMK also won 26 seats and is leading on 43 while its ally BJP won on one seat and is leading on three seats. Paattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) has won one seat and is leading on three others. Congress, which is an ally of DMK has won 3 seats and is leading on 13 more. DMK`s other allies CPI and CPI (M) have won one seat each and are leading on one seat each and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has won two and is leading on two more.

In Kerala, all results have been declared with CPI-M winning 62 seats. Hat-trick for Mamata in Bengal, indicate all exit polls save two

After the ban imposed on her by the Election Commission (EC) ended on Tuesday evening, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee challenged the rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying that she is a street fighter and fights from the battleground.

Speaking at a public rally in Barasat after her 24-hour campaigning ban ended, Banerjee said: "They have crores of money and have come to elections. You have money, you have mediators, you have hotels, you have all agencies of India. But even then do you know why you will lose? Because I am a street fighter, I fight from the battleground. I do not fight by giving instructions from above."

She also questioned why the BJP was rigorously trying to stop her with the help of all central institutions and agencies.

"From Delhi to entire India, BJP is taking all institutions to ensure I am stopped, Bengal is being humiliated and captured. I say clearly, we will not allow Bengal to become Gujarat; Bengal can't become Gujarat. There is no benefit in stopping me. If I am attacked, I can attack in reply as well," she added.

"During the last 24 hours, I could not campaign for elections and cannot campaign for 72 hours before the fifth phase. This means for four days, on one side, BJP will campaign, and I won't be able to do the same for Trinamool Congress (TMC). I leave the thinking to the public."

Challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister said that he is claiming that she has not done anything for the Matua community.

"I accept the challenge. If I have not done anything, I will resign from politics and if you are spewing lies without doing anything then you will do situps by holding your ears," she mentioned.

"Mamata Banerjee has talked about everyone. Mamata Banerjee is not BJP. Even if my party worker dies, I feel as much sad if a person from another party dies. I do not do politics with lies," she further said.

"They have kept 14 lakh Bengalis in detention camps, who have no future. We are fighting for those poor people. They were not even voting, police made raids on them."

"BJP cannot do anything to me with their money. I am a Bengal tigress, I break but I do not bend," she further remarked. Banerjee appealed to the people to vote for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) if they did not want to see "Gujaratis capturing Bengal".&nbsp;

A three-cornered battle is on the cards in 31 assembly seats that are set to go to polls on Tuesday in the third phase of Bengal elections, with the BJP seeking to breach TMC fortresses, and the Left Front-ISF-Congress alliance hoping to make a mark in areas, where identity politics has gained ground.

More than 78.5 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise and decide the fate of 205 candidates -- prominent among them being BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta, TMC minister Ashima Patra and CPM leader Kanti Ganguly in three districts - Howrah, Hooghly and South 24 Parganas.

Tight security arrangements have been made to ensure peaceful voting, with 618 companies of CAPF deployed to guard 10,871 polling stations, all of which have been marked "sensitive" by the Election Commission. State police forces will also be deputed at strategic locations to aid the CAPF.

With the COVID-19 situation in the state taking a turn for the worse, polling will be held amid strict adherence to health protocols across all 31 constituencies -- 16 in South 24 Parganas (part II), seven in Howrah (part I) and eight in Hooghly (part I).

The TMC had won all but one seat of these 31 segments in the 2016 assembly elections. The Congress had managed to bag Amta constituency in Howrah district.

The Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, held by political heavyweight and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, will be closely watched, as four of its seven assembly segments will go to polls in the third phase, and the rest will follow suit in the fourth phase on April 10.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday filed her nomination for Nandigram assembly seat, where she will take on her former protege and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and exuded confidence of winning it saying she has never returned empty-handed from the land of anti-farm land acquisition movement.

Accompanied by TMC president Subrata Bakshi, Banerjee filed her papers at the Haldia sub-divisional office here after taking part in a 2-km roadshow. She offered prayers at a temple before filing her nomination, and at another after doing so.

"I am confident about my victory from the Nandigram assembly seat. I could have easily contested from Bhawanipur seat (which she represents).

"When I had visited Nandigram in January, there was no MLA from here as the sitting MLA had resigned. I looked at the faces of the common people and decided to contest from here," she said after filing her paper.

Deputy chairman of East Midnapore zilla parishad Sheikh Sufiyan has been appointed as Banerjee's election agent.

"I have never returned empty-handed from here. Nandigram is not just a name, it is the name of a movement. Bhulte pari sobar naam, bhulbo nako Nandigram (I can forget everyone's name, but can never forget Nandigram). That's the significance of this place for me," the TMC supremo said.

Banerjee said that she had made up her mind this time to contest either from the Singur or Nandigram - the cradles of the anti-farm land acquisition movement which had catapulted her to power in 2011.

"My feeling is very clear - no one can divide this place along religious lines. During the Nandigram movement all the communities had participated in it. Those who are lecturing now about its legacy were nowhere when violence was unleashed here. I was fighting alone," she said.

The feisty TMC chief will contest from Nandigram for the first time after relinquishing her Bhowanipore constituency in Kolkata.

She has rented a house in Nandigram and will campaign from there.

Nandigram assembly constituency is set for a high octane battle with Banerjee deciding to contest from the seat against Adhikari, who recently switched over to the saffron camp.

Adhikari, who will file his nomination paper for the seat on a later date, called her an "outsider" to Nandigram and himself a "bhoomiputra" (son of the soil).

He had won the Nandigram seat in the 2016 assembly poll, while another TMC candidate emerged victorious from the constituency in 2011.

Adhikari had quit TMC and resigned from the assembly late last year to join BJP following differences with the state's ruling party.

Both the leaders were prominent figures in the anti-farm land acquisition movement in Nandigram in 2007 that had catapulted Banerjee to power in West Bengal in 2011 ending the 34-year-long rule of the Left Front.

The little-known rural area, which had witnessed one of the bloodiest movements against the government's acquisition of cultivable land for industrialisation, had then changed the political landscape of West Bengal.

Now after more than a decade of peace, Nandigram, home to 70 per cent Hindus and 30 per cent Muslims, is witnessing political and communal polarisation.

The Muslims are firmly behind TMC that has controlled the area for the last 15 years.

The constituency mainly comprises two blocks -- Nandigram I and Nandigram II -- with the first having 30 per minority population and the second almost 15 per cent.

Three candidates of the Bimal Gurung faction of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), an ally of the TMC, will be contesting from the remaining three seats in Darjeeling.

"This time we have stressed on more youths and women candidates. Around 23-24 sitting MLAS have been dropped and there are names of about 50 women, 42 Muslims, 79 SC and 17 ST candidates in the list," Banerjee said.

Exuding confidence in returning to power for the third consecutive time, Banerjee termed it as the "easiest" election the TMC has ever faced.

"After we come to power we will create Vidhan Parishad to accommodate senior and experienced leaders. We could not accommodate everybody especially those above the age of 80 years," she said.

"I will be contesting from Nandigram, my party colleague Sovandeb Chattopadhyay will be contesting from Bhawanipore seat," she said.

Banerjee also challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to deploy as much central force as it wants but the TMC will still emerge victorious.
