KL Rahul's form remains a huge cause of concern for Team India ahead of the third and penultimate Test versus Australia in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series and are likely to remain unchanged in their playing XI. However, many questions have been raised on Rahul being given a long run despite his repeated failures.

Recently, Sourav Ganguly -- former Indian captain and BCCI chief -- opined on Rahul. "When you don't score runs in India, obviously you will get flak. KL Rahul hasn't been the only one. There have been players in the past also," Ganguly told PTI in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of Delhi Capitals' IPL pre-season camp ahead of IPL 2023.

Further, Ganguly sounded optimistic of Rahul's return to form and said, "He has performed but obviously you expect a lot more from a top order batter playing for India because the standards set by others are so high. When you fail for a while, obviously there will be criticism. I am sure Rahul has ability and I am sure as and when he gets more opportunities, he will have to find ways to score," he explained.

Rahul hasn't crossed the 25-run mark in his last ten innings. He has scored only 198 runs in the last 12 outings and has so far managed a paltry 38 runs overall in three innings in the Australia Tests. When you don't score runs in India, you will get flak: Sourav Ganguly opines on KL Rahul's form

Former Indian all-rounder Ravi Shastri, while speaking on ICC Review Podcast, said that Shubman Gill will be challenging KL Rahul for the opener's position in the upcoming Test against Australia in Indore. The Test, third in the Border-Gavaskar trophy, is scheduled to start from March 1.

Shastri's statement comes on the back of Rahul's struggling form and the team management's decision to remove him as the vice-captain. Notably, KL Rahul has scored only 38 runs in three innings across the first two Tests against Australia at a paltry average of 12.66.

“If the vice-captain doesn’t perform, someone can take his place; at least the tag is not there. I’m being blunt and brutal, I never like vice-captain in home conditions. Overseas, it’s different. Now, he’s not the vice-captain, it has to be team management’s decision,” Shastri said.

The call for Shubman Gil inclusion in the Test side over Rahul has been becoming louder with each passing day. The swashbuckling opener has been in great form having scored a double century in ODIs against touring New Zealand last month and scoring a T20I hundred against the same opposition later.

India vs Australia: Ravi Shastri backs Shubman Gill to replace KL Rahul for Indore Test

KL Rahul's form has become a huge talking point in the Indian cricket fraternity. In the ongoing India-Australia Tests, Rohit Sharma & Co. have dominated proceedings and have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2022/23 but Rahul's low returns with the bat have made heads turn. In three outings in the India-Australia series, the right-hander only has 38 runs whereas his last 12 innings has seen him score only 198 runs. Thus, his place is under threat whereas BCCI sacked him as the vice-captain while announcing the squad for the last two Tests.

Amid severe criticism coming from all corners, Rahul has been slammed left, right and centre by former cricketer Venkatesh Prasad. Now, another ex-player Dodda Ganesh has joined the bandwagon and lashed out at the under-fire opener. He replied to a post shared from Prasad and wrote, "Rahul Dravid and the think tank has immense faith in KL Rahul’s abilities, so he is getting an extended run like Rohit got in ODIs. We all know KL is a special player. It’s high time he converted his potential into consistent scores. Let’s hope he comes good in the last 2 tests."

Time is running for Rahul who has been in woeful form in whites. He even lost his place in the T20I squad post India's 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final defeat at the hands of eventual champions England. The Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led team management have continued to back the 30-year-old amid his poor run of form. After the Delhi Test, head coach Dravid told Star Sports, "I think he (Rahul) needs to trust his processes. This is just a phase, he has been one of our most successful overseas openers. 'Can we leave KL Rahul alone?': Harbhajan Singh backs under-fire Indian opener amid severe criticism

India have been on a rampage versus Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2022/23. Rohit Sharma & Co. won the series opener, in Nagpur, convincingly and also emerged on top in the second Test, in New Delhi, and will now aim for a 4-0 whitewash versus the Aussies at home. While the likes of Rohit, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Md Shami, Axar Patel have been on a roll, KL Rahul has struggled in particular in the two Tests.

Rahul, who has only 198 runs in the last 12 innings, has managed only 38 runs in 3 outings in the Australia Tests. Thus, he had drawn a lot of criticism and is place is on the line. Recently, veteran keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik opined on Rahul's form and symphathised with him. He feels Rahul might lose his place soon not for his unlucky dismissal in the second innings of the Delhi Test but for his below-par returns since the South Africa series last year.

Karthik said on Cricbuzz, "He also knows for a fact that if he's going to be dropped for the next match, which is pretty much an eventuality, it is not because of the one innings, it is because of what has transpired in the last five-six Test matches. He is a class player. He is very good in all formats. At this point, I don't think it's the technique, it's what is happening between the ears. He might need some time away from the game. Come back fresh for the ODIs."

Karthik further added that he resonates with Rahul's current state. It's not a nice feeling because there's not much you can do."

DK went on to pick Shubman Gill over Rahul for the third Test at Holkar Stadium, Indore. "Temporarily for the moment, I will have to go with Shubman Gill. He batted beautifully. There will be just one change in the India XI (for the third Test). I felt bad for KL Rahul. He has been under the scanner. But One thing is for sure, KL will come back strongly and when he does, there are not too many right-handed batters who can match him with the quality and range of shots," DK stated.

India will lock horns with Australia in the third and penultimate Test at Indore which kicks off on March 01. While Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid have backed Rahul, he might still be out of the playing XI given he has looked completely out of sorts -- especially mentally -- in the series.

I shed a tear or two: Dinesh Karthik sympathises with KL Rahul, recalls his struggle period

India thrashed Australia by six wickets on Day 3 of the second Test, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, to go 2-0 up in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. While Australia did put up a better show in the Test match, till the first innings, they fell flat in their second essay and gave a paltry 114-run target to Team India. In reply, Rohit Sharma & Co. chased down the score with six wickets to spare and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the process.

The likes of Rohit, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Md Shami have been India's top-performers so far but opener KL Rahul has been struggling for runs. The 30-year-old has only managed 198 runs in the last 12 innings. In the ongoing Test series, Rahul has a total of 38 runs in three innings and has looked completely out of form. Thus, many have slammed the Indian batter and former pacer Venkatesh Prasad has been quite vocal in his criticism of Rahul. He has time and again vented out his frustration with Rahul struggling for runs. Amid severe criticism, both captain Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid have backed the underfire opener.

After the Delhi Test win, Dravid told Star Sports, "I think he (Rahul) needs to trust his processes. This is just a phase, he has been one of our most successful overseas openers. He’s got centuries in South Africa and England, we’ll continue to back him. I believe he has the quality and class to come out of this."

Now, Prasad broke the notion of Rahul having a good overseas record and shared a series of tweets -- also comprising the opener's ordinary away numbers. He wrote, "There is a view that KL Rahul has an outstanding overseas Test record. But stats speak otherwise. He has a test avg of 30 overseas in 56 innings. He has scored 6 overseas centuries but followed it up with a string of low scores that’s why averaging 30. Let’s look at a few others.
Speaking about Rahul's Test career, the right-hander has 2,642 runs in 47 Tests at an average of 33.44 with 7 hundreds. He has two hundreds in England and one each in India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies and Australia. At home, he averages 40.13 but it goes down drastically in away Tests (30.69).

At the post-match press conference of the Delhi Test, captain Rohit indicated that Rahul will be given a longer rope. "Lately, there has been a lot of talk about Rahul’s batting. As team management, we always look at the potential of any individual, not just KL. I have been asked this in the past about a lot of players. If a guy has potential, he will get that extended run,” Sharma said.

Rahul has lost his vice-captaincy post for the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Hence, he will be desperate for a big knock in the remainder of the Australia Tests.

I believe he has the quality and class to come out of this." Now, Prasad broke the notion of Rahul having a good overseas record and shared a series of tweets -- also comprising the opener's ordinary away numbers. Venkatesh Prasad once again slams KL Rahul, hits back at 'he has great overseas Test record' claims

India defeated Australia on Day 3 of the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on Sunday (February 19). The day kicked off with Australia being well-placed at 61 for 1, with an overall lead of 62 runs, but fell flat on the third day after being dismissed for a paltry 113. Ravindra Jadeja (7 for 42) wreaked havoc with the red cherry before Rohit Sharma & Co. chased down a target of 114 with six wickets in hand. With the win, India have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and BCCI later named an unchanged squad for the last two Tests.

However, there was one big update. Indian opener KL Rahul was axed as the vice-captain amid his form concerns. It is to be noted that the stylish right-hander has only managed 198 runs in the last 12 innings. In the ongoing Test series versus the Baggy Greens, he has a total of 38 runs in three innings and has looked completely out of sorts. Thus, it is believed that he paid a price for his poor run of form and has been sacked as Rohit's deputy. As per a report by The Indian Express, the management has sought to unburden Rahul from the leadership role.

It is to be noted that Rahul has served as Rohit's deputy ever since Hitman became India's full-time captain in early 2022. He led the national side in three Tests, six ODIs and one T20I in 2022 and served as India's white-ball vice-captain before losing the post to Hardik Pandya last month. Hence, he is now completely out of the leadership group and will have to step up with the bat to regain the vice-captaincy post, at least, in whites.

IND vs AUS: Revealed! Why KL Rahul has been axed as India's vice-captain for remaining Tests

Indian openers have had contrasting outings so far in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series. While the India captain Rohit Sharma hit a stunning hundred in the first innings of the Nagpur Test in addition to scoring 32 and 31 in both innings in Delhi, KL Rahul failed in his three outings – scoring 20, 17 and 1. Amid facing criticism from all across for his lean patch, Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid has come in favour of struggling KL Rahul. Speaking to the media after the end of the second Test that India won by six wickets, Dravid backed the Indian opener saying it’s just about time before he clicks at the top of the order.

Meanwhile, following the end of the first Test in Nagpur, former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad didn’t hold back while criticizing KL Rahul, saying to an extent that the team management is picking players out of favouritism and not on merit. After Rahul’s failure in the second Test, Prasad went after him again, asking the management to drop him and play in-form Shubman Gill instead.

Rahul Dravid backs KL Rahul despite lean patch; says Rohit has dressing room's respect following 2nd Test win

India have been on a roll on the opening day of the second Test, in New Delhi, versus Australia. After being asked to bowl first, India accounted for three scalps in the first session. While they chipped in with regular wickets post the lunch break, opener Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb stitched a vital 59-run fifth-wicket stand. Just when Khawaja was reaching the 100-run mark, he was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja with KL Rahul taking a one-handed stunner.

Talking about the delivery, Khawaja went for a reverse sweep against Jadeja. He, however, couldn't get the desired connection and the ball went straight to square leg position, where Rahul dived towards his right and pulled off a one-handed stunner. As a result, Khawaja was on his knees and in complete disbelief as he was deprived of a hundred. Here's the video:

They will still be hoping to put up a respectable total, anything over 250-275, and put up a good fight in the second Test after the hammering they received in the series opener in Nagpur. India won the first Test by an innings and 132 runs and have a 1-0 lead.

For his series of poor run in Tests, KL Rahul has received latest criticism from the former India fast bowler Venkatesh Pradesh who has come out hard on the India opener saying his selection in the Test side is not based on performance but favouritism. Picked over in-form Shubman Gill – who was coming off a super series against New Zealand where he scored his maiden double hundred in addition to scoring two centuries in white-ball formats, Rahul flopped in the first innings against Australia in Nagpur. The right-hander not only looked in poor touch, he played a lazy shot just at the stroke of stumps on day one to hand debutant Todd Murphy and Australia the needed breakthrough.

Ex-India seamer comes out hard on KL Rahul, says his selection is based on favouritism and not on performance

India had a flawless start to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by dominating Day 1 of the Nagpur Test on Thursday (February 09). Rohit Sharma & Co. dismissed Pat Cummins-led Australia for a paltry 177 riding on Ravindra Jadeja's five-fer before the hosts went to stumps at 77 for 1, with captain Rohit unbeaten on fifty-plus.

Rohit and KL Rahul stitched an impressive 76-run opening stand but the latter was dismissed for 20 off debutant Todd Murphy as India lost a wicket before end of day's play. With Rahul failing to touch the 50-run mark in his last eight innings, many were left disappointed with his departure as he missed another opportunity to get a big score.

Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh feels Rahul should've adopted a more aggressive approach. Speaking on his official Youtube channel, Bhajji said, "KL Rahul would be disappointed as he was taking more time. I believe if he could have kept an attacking approach then he could have scored more. I hope in the second innings if he gets the chance to bat, he will score some runs for his own confidence."

Commenting on the match, Harbhajan stated, "I am hoping that India scores 300-350 on this pitch. Captain Rohit Sharma started a great inning (and) is not out with more than 50 runs. If he plays the entire first session then there will be expectations for a century."

"If India scores anywhere near 350 then I doubt Australia will be able to score more than 200 in the second innings. The more you bowl on this pitch, the more it will spin. If it spins then Australia will surrender against India's three spinners," he asserted.

At present, the match is interestingly poised. Australia have chipped in with regular wickets on Day 2, on Friday (February 10), to not let India run away with the game. Rohit's century has taken India to the lead but they have only five wickets in hand. Hence, he needs to bat for long to ensure his side a healthy lead in the contest.

'KL Rahul could've scored more runs with...': Harbhajan on Indian opener's failure on Day 1 of Nagpur Test

India had a perfect start to the opening day of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy edition on Thursday (February 09). Being asked to bowl first in the first Test, in Nagpur, Rohit Sharma & Co. were off to a flier versus Pat Cummins-led Australia, reducing them to 2 for 2, and soon dismissed them for 177 with Ravindra Jadeja (5 for 47) and R Ashwin (3 for 42) shining with the ball.

In reply, India started off on a strong note with the bat with captain Rohit leading the charge whereas his deputy and opening partner KL Rahul played cautiously. The duo had stitched an impressive 76-run-opening stand and looked set to close the day's play with their stand being unbroken. However, Rahul was once again dismissed for cheap -- after a dismal run in the Bangladesh Tests in December 2022 -- with a soft dismissal leading to his long walk back to the pavillion.

Rahul gave a simple catch to debutant spinner Todd Murphy to give Australia their first breakthrough. After his dismissal, Rohit was dejected and reacted strongly. Here's the video:

WATCH: Rohit Sharma reacts after KL Rahul gets dismissed before stumps on Day 1 of Nagpur Test

A lot has already been said and predicted about India's best XI for the first Test against Australia in Nagpur. Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain while addressing the presser spoke on the India's possible XI and even responded to negative criticism surrounding Test match wickets in India, especially the one prepared for the 1st Test - that is accused of being 'doctored' for getting unfair home advantage. Rohit also confirmed that it is only after assessing the surface and the conditions, a call on the final XI will be made.

Ahead of the first home Test in this season, Rohit said with almost everyone performing at the same time it becomes a tad difficult to pick and drop someone on the same grounds.

"It's going to be a tough one. We know a lot of guys are in good form, that's a good sign for the team. You have selection issues and it says a lot about the guys performing. That's quite crucial from the team's perspective, what we have to do is go to each venue, see the pitch and pick the best eleven. We have been doing that in the past and we will be doing that going forward," Rohit said at the presser in Nagpur.

The veteran batter also revealed that the team selection will be done purely on the basis of conditions, and that everyone in the camp is made aware of this.

"Message to the boys is very clear. We are ready to play horses for courses. Whichever pitch, whoever we need, we have to bring them in. As simple as that. That is something we have spoken to the guys. We will have to assess conditions and see who are the right guys, so we are quite open with all options," the captain added.

Without spilling beans on what India's final XI would look like, Rohit heaped some praises on the talented duo of Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav, both of who are fighting for that one place in the middle order. Talking about the young Gill, Rohit said his recent exploits cannot be overlooked while Surya being such a rockstar in T20 format brings a lot to the table.

"They bring different things to the table for us. Gill we all know has been in supreme form in the last three to four months. Lots of big hundreds as well. Surya has shown in T20s what he is capable of and what sort of game he can bring to Test cricket as well. Both are quality options for us and we haven't yet decided who will play among the two guys, keep in mind all aspects of the game. I will not give you guys anything today," Rohit added.

Sharing his thoughts on the pitch critics - mainly from Australia, Rohit said the focus should remain on playing good cricket and not on how the pitch will play.

"I just feel, focus is on playing the game. Last series we played here, a lot was spoken about pitches and all 22 are quality cricketers and not bothered about how much it is turning, how much it is seaming and all that," Rohit said.

'It's going to be tough one': Rohit Sharma on picking 'right guy for right game' during Australia series

Shubman Gill has had a stellar run in international cricket in the recent past. During India's tour of Bangladesh in late 2022, he struck his maiden Test hundred and went onto slam a hundred in the Sri Lanka home ODIs before becoming the youngest to score a double ton in the 50-over format and recently became only the fifth India to log a ton in all formats with his maiden T20I ton. Having such a flawless run, one expects Gill to feature in India's playing XI for the four-match Test series opener versus Australia, in Nagpur on February 09.

Nonetheless, the competition is tough as India have preferred the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul in Tests. The two were at their best during the England Tests in 2021 and were expected to open together during the Bangladesh series before captain Rohit got injured. With Rahul being his deputy, it will be tough for Gill to replace him. With no Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, either of the two can bat in the middle order as well but the questions remains as to who will open with Rohit. In this regard, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared his take.

“Not in all three formats but in two formats. If you talk about Test matches, you have two openers who have scored runs in difficult conditions, scored runs in England and won matches for India there. KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma are there, so suddenly because Shubman Gill has scored runs in the T20 format, you cannot ask them to step aside and let him play. You need the stability,” Pathan told Star Sports.

KL Rahul has had a topsy-turvy ride in terms of batting at different positions across formats in his career. Having made his Test debut at number six at the MCG in 2014, KL was asked to open in the following Test in Sydney. Even in the white-ball cricket, he was looked up to as the perfect opener given his exploits early in his career before he was made a makeshift middle-order batter a couple of years back. After trying him again at the top of the order in ODIs where he didn't really find his Midas touch in some time now, KL has again been asked to take over the number five spot in the lead up to the home World Cup. However, after playing a match-winning knock against Sri Lanka in the second ODI at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, the 30-year-old talked about his new role.

Batting at number five benefited both India and KL Rahul himself as in 15 innings he has batted at that position, KL has scored at an average of 54.25 and a strike-rate of 102.03. He also has six fifties and a hundred to his name, and above all, he has looked settled and has given India the much-required stability that they were missing.

Speaking with Star Sports after the match, KL said batting at number five helped him understand his game a little bit better. He also revealed that Rohit Sharma wants him to bat at the same spot only.

"Batting at No. 5 has just helped me understand my game a little bit better. Given the ball is slightly older, you have to play spin straightaway and that's not what I am used to usually. So now I am challenging myself to get used to this position," Rahul told Star Sports after the second ODI.

The right-handed batter said the best thing about batting at number five is that you don't have to rush into batting.

"One thing I really enjoy is that you don't have to rush back into batting. You get time to put your feet up, have a nice cold shower, have a good meal and then relax and then see what's happening before walking in. That's the good thing about batting at No. 5," he added.

Now that he plays as a keeper-batter in the team, KL elaborated on his dual role saying he has thrived on performing in tough conditions and under pressure and likes this responsibility.

"I've played at No. 5, I've played at No. 4, I've been asked to keep wickets. I think it is very fun for me. I have thrived on performing in tough conditions and under pressure. Batting at number 5 helped me understand my game better - KL Rahul after Kolkata heroics against Sri Lanka

India defeated Sri Lanka by 67 runs in the first ODI, in Guwahati, to go 1-0 up in the three-match series on Tuesday (January 10). Ahead of the second and penultimate ODI, at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin has slammed KL Rahul for not being consistent and finding different ways to get out.

In the ODI series opener, India rode on skipper Rohit Sharma's 83, Shubman Gill's 70 and Virat Kohli's 113 not out to post 373/7. Later, India defended the total by restricting Sri Lanka to 306 for 8, to win by 67 runs. Talking about Rahul, he donned the wicketkeeping gloves and made a 29-ball 39. Just when he was looking set, he departed after being cleaned up by pacer Kasun Rajitha.

Thus, Azhar told PTI, "I think Rahul is getting out in a lot of manners. Primarily, it is not the good balls that are getting him out. It is poor shot selection first up that is causing problems," said Azhar, who further added that the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper should work with the coaches to rectify his batting flaws.

"I think consistency is the problem in KL Rahul's case. But I think there are coaches who should rectify his flaws. In my opinion, he is a good player but consistency is missing in his game," Azharuddin was quoted as saying by the news agency.

IND vs SL: India clinch ODI series courtesy of KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav's match-winning performances

Indian seamer Mohammed Siraj had a good outing against Sri Lanka in the second ODI at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata picking up three wickets for 30 runs. Crediting keeper-batter KL Rahul for his impressive spell, Siraj said it was KL's advice that helped him pick wickets on this batting-friendly track. Other than Siraj, Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav also scalped three wickets while superfast pacer Umran Malik bagged two while Axar Patel one. Courtesy an overall outstanding performance with the ball, India wrapped up Sri Lanka's first innings on 215 inside 40 overs.

Siraj, who first picked up opening batter Avishka Fernando bowled on 20, got the big fish in Dunith Wellalage for 32 - who played a counter attacking inning, during the fag end. He then clean bowled tail-ender Lahiru Kumara on zero to finish Sri Lanka's first inning.

Talking about what KL Rahul suggested, Siraj said KL told him not to swing the ball after the first over itself and instead suggested him to switch to hard lengths, that eventually saw him picking wickets.

"KL (Rahul) told me it stopped swinging after one over, so I switched over to hard lengths. It is a good batting wicket but Kuldeep bowled very well to cause a middle-order collapse," said Siraj during the innings break.

"The ball wasn't coming out quick enough, and there wasn't enough swing. So the plan was to bowl stump to stump to keep the pressure from one end, hoping to get wickets and help the other bowlers," added the fast bowler.

Even in the first match, Siraj picked up two wickets and is currently co-leading the bowling chart with Umran Malik with five scalps to his name.

In 2022, as many as seven players led India at different times.
Ishan Kishan ended 2022 with a bang by becoming only the fourth Indian -- seventh overall -- to slam an ODI double ton during the Indian tour of Bangladesh in December. Playing the third and inconsequential tie due to regular captain Rohit Sharma's thumb injury, the 24-year-old made the most of the opportunity and slammed a majestic 131-ball 210, laced with 24 fours and 10 sixes. Thus, Ishan made a big statement with India stepping into 2023, i.e. an ODI World Cup year with Men in Blue set to host the mega event.

Ahead of India's first international assignment in 2023, the BCCI selection committee -- under outgoing chief Chetan Sharma -- announced the national side's white-ball squads for their home series versus Sri Lanka, starting on January 03. While there was no mention of first-choice Rishabh Pant -- a first-choice keeper-batter across formats -- Kishan found his name in both the squads. With Shikhar Dhawan dropped, India still has quite a few batters who can accompany Rohit at the top. But, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir is crystal clear that Kishan deserves to partner Rohit in ODIs..

As quoted by Cricinfo, Gambhir said that the discussion about who should be Sharma's partner at the top should be over following Kishan's blitz. "I'm amazed we're discussing this, because someone's got a double-hundred in the previous innings," Gambhir pointed out when asked to name his choice on who should open with Rohit. "The discussion is over. It has to be Ishan Kishan. Someone who can get a double-hundred in those conditions against a reasonable attack - especially at [their] home - should play."

"He got what 200 by the 35th over mark? You can't look at anyone beyond Ishan Kishan. He has to be given a longer run. He can keep wickets as well, so he can do two jobs for you. So for me, that discussion shouldn't be there. If someone else had got a double-hundred, I think we would've gone gung-ho over that individual, but it's not the case with Ishan Kishan. Because we still continue to talk about other players. For me, that debate is over," he asserted.

The discussion is over: Gambhir feels 'it has to be Ishan Kishan' who should open with Rohit in ODIs

On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's T20I and ODI squad for their upcoming home series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway on January 3. While some big names weren't part of the Hardik Pandya-led T20I squad, the ODI line-up feature Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and the likes with no mention of Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant (due to a niggle on his knee) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Moreover, all-rounder Hardik was also promoted as the ODI vice-captain despite Rahul's presence. Ever since Rohit took over, Rahul has been his deputy across formats but a string of low scores and Hardik's rise as a leader has resulted in the former losing out on his vice-captaincy post. In the Bangladesh Tests, Rahul had scores of 22, 23, 10, and 2. Even in the ODIs, he scored a majestic 73 in the series opener before not doing anything significant (scoring 14 and 8 respectively) in the last two games. Thus, he knows he has to remain consistent or will lose his ODI spot as well in a World Cup year, with the mega event to be held later in 2023 in India.

Ahead of the SL ODIs, which commences on January 10, former Indian opener and Rahul's IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) mentor Gautam Gambhir shared his take on the right-hander's form. "You can only control what you can control. You can't control selectors, you can't control what's going to happen in the next series. You got three ODIs against Sri Lanka. If you play that, just be in the present. That's all you can control. The moment you start to think about uncontrollable things, you're putting undue pressure on yourself,” Gambhir said in Star Sports' A Chat with Champions.

That's what international cricket is about. No one is indispensable. 'The moment you start...' - Gautam Gambhir shares his take on KL Rahul's struggles ahead of SL ODIs

On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee -- under outgoing chief Chetan Sharma -- announced India's squads for the white-ball home series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway next year on January 03 in Mumbai. As expected, Hardik Pandya has once again been named as the captain of the T20I squad with no big guns available whereas Rohit Sharma will return to take charge of the ODI line-up after his thumb injury during the Bangladesh tour. Hardik has also been promoted as the new ODI vice-captain (despite KL Rahul's presence).

Some of the notable factors from the T20I line-up is that Suryakumar Yadav has been named as the vice-captain, which doesn't include the likes of Rahul, Rishabh Pant, etc. Meanwhile, it is a young squad including the likes of Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar (recently bought by Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023 mini-auction for INR 5 crores), etc. It gives one a sneak peek of the selectors' mindset keeping in view the next edition of the T20 World Cup, in the West Indies and USA, in 2024.

Talking about the ODI squad, Pant remains absent from it as well. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is also not part of both squads. The biggest omission is Shikhar Dhawan, who has struggled for runs and has seen a sharp decline in his strike rate amid rising stocks of Kishan and Gill. Meanwhile, Md Shami also returned whereas the likes of Rahul and Kohli will feature straightaway in the 50-over series. There's no mention of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja as the duo are expected to return for the New Zealand white-ball series at home.

BCCI's official Twitter handle released the squads via separate posts:

IND vs SL: Hardik Pandya to lead in T20Is, promoted as ODI vice-captain with Shikhar Dhawan dropped

Stand-in captain KL Rahul had a good run leading the Indian team in the just-concluded Bangladesh Test, which the tourists won 2-0. He, however, fell flat as a batter while opening the innings with Shubman Gill. Rahul only managed scores of 22, 23, 10 and 2 in the four outings whereas Gill scored his maiden hundred in the format during the series opener in Chattogram.

After the Bangladesh Tests, India have a stern task ahead as they gear up to host Australia in the upcoming edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home, starting on February 09. Ahead of the marquee series, on home soil, veteran Indian keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has issued a warning to Rahul to up his game or he will be left out with Gill's rising stocks.

“I would give KL those couple of Test matches, but if things don’t go KL Rahul’s way; the one thing that does go against him is the fact that he has played over 40 Tests and his average is just mid-30s. That is not acceptable for an opener. That is one of the lowest among Indian players for sure, who have played 35 Test matches," Karthik said while speaking on Cricbuzz.

'That is not acceptable...': Dinesh Karthik issues warning for KL Rahul amid Shubman Gill's rising Test stocks

India had a tough time chasing 145 in the fourth innings of the second Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka. Having lost four wickets for 50 runs at stumps the previous day, India didn’t look like completing the task with any ease. Losing three quick wickets inside the first hour on Sunday morning further mounted pressure on them. Down and out Indian team were staring straight in the eyes of a historic defeat.

However, the last recognized batting pair of Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Ashwin then began the rescue act and made sure India doesn’t face any more jitters. Although Ashwin deployed a more attacking approach, first-inning hero Shreyas Iyer played his natural game and remained composed in the chase. The confidence in his body-language was oozing out as he and Ashwin kept India in the game and eventually helped them win the match.

Talking about the match and this partnership in particular, India’s stand-in captain KL Rahul said it was the tough game and that everyone in the camp is happy with the win.

"Tough game. Happy that we got the job done. We were in a bit of trouble and there was a bit of pressure and nervousness in the dressing room. Really happy that Ashwin and Shreyas got that partnership that got us the victory. Conditions were tough and that is what makes Test cricket fun," Rahul said.

Rahul didn’t shy away from applauding Iyer for showing such a stomach for the fight saying Shreyas has been around for some time now and to see him (Iyer) grabbing his chances like this makes him (KL) happy.

"When someone is performing consistently for you, it is very heartening. He [Shreyas Iyer] has been around for a long time and has had to wait for his opportunities and really happy to see that when has had those opportunities, he has grabbed them with both hands, Rahul added.

Where the whole team was struggling to put runs on board on this track in the fourth innings, Shreyas Iyer not only scored runs, he did that with relative ease. Across four innings on this tour, Shreyas scored 202 runs at an average of 101. Even in this Test in particular, Iyer first scored a superb 87 in the first innings followed by an unbeaten 29 in the second.

"He is doing the job for the team and the way he played today was phenomenal. He made it look really easy. There was pressure and there was a bit of panic in the dressing room. But it didn't look like there was any panic when we were watching Shreyas bat," Rahul said.

"With Ashwin, he had a really good partnership. He has played really well in the last 15 months to two years. He has done really well for us and then he had the injury and went away for a bit. He had to really wait for his turn again and has been really patient. His journey hasn't been easy. The way he is batting is phenomenal," Rahul concluded.

BAN vs IND 2022: 'He is doing great job for the team...'captain KL Rahul hails star performer after series win

Out-of-form India opener KL Rahul is likely to get dropped for the upcoming Sri Lanka series while outgoing Chetan Sharma-led selection panel will be picking the squad, as per a report in PTI. BCCI had earlier sacked the selection committee led by the former India World Cup winner following India’s dismal loss to England in the semis of the T20 World Cup by 10 wickets.

However, before the new committee is formed, for which the selection process is going on, this already sacked-panel will name the squad for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka, starting with the 1st T20I on December 3rd in Mumbai.

As per the report, KL Rahul, who just led India to a Test series win in Bangladesh, might face the axe for his poor run with the bat in this format. During the T20 World Cup in Australia, Rahul returned with four single-digit scores including a 5-ball five against England in the big semi-final.

Now since regular skipper Rohit Sharma is injured and his availability status remains unknown, Hardik Pandya will lead the team in his absence while KL Rahul could be on his way out.

"The old committee will probably select the Sri Lanka white ball squad," a BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"As of now, it doesn't look like Rohit Sharma's finger will heal enough before the T20Is and in that case, Hardik will lead the side. As far as KL Rahul is concerned, his T20I days seem to be numbered," the source added.

Other than Rohit and Rahul, Virat is another big name who could also miss the T20I series as he will be rested, while it will be interesting to see if Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah make a comeback to the squad or not. The Chetan Sharma-led panel could name the squad any time soon given the first match is just nine days away.
