New Zealand veteran Kane Williamson has returned to lead the T20I team against Bangladesh almost a year after playing his last game in this format. The right-handed batter will lead a relatively younger squad, with most first-team players out with respective injuries.

Having last featured for New Zealand in this format against India in November last year, Kane returned to action during the 2023 World Cup after suffering a knee injury during IPL 2023. Kane Williamson returns to lead New Zealand against Bangladesh for home T20Is

Bangladesh made a brilliant start to their post-ODI World Cup hangover as they won the first Test match against New Zealand in Sylhet on Saturday (Dec 2). The win was highlighted by the exceptional bowling of Taijul Islam who ended with 75/6 in the second innings as the Kiwis were beaten by 150 runs. This is the second time Bangladesh have stunned New Zealand, having also beaten them in 2022 in a Test match. The win now sees the hosts take a 1-0 lead, meaning a draw in the second Test will see them, register a historic Test series win against the 2021 World Test Championship (WTC) winners.

Taijul shines in win

Starting the day at 113/7, New Zealand were already on the back foot and needed a miracle to escape the defeat. Daryl Mitchell (58) was the only hope for the Kiwis but with the loss of his wicket on the fourth ball of the 59th over, it was a matter of time before Bangladesh scampered to a win. Tim Southee (34) and Ish Sodhi (22) showed some resilience before they were sent packing back to the pavilion. Taijul played a part in all three dismissals having caught Mitchell while scalping Southee and Sodhi to lead Bangladesh to the famous win.

Earlier, New Zealand took a slight seven-run first innings lead having posted 317 on the board in response to Bangladesh’s 310. Captain Kane Williamson scored 104 while Taijul scalped four wickets to be the star of the show. In their second innings, riding on Najmul Hossain Shanto’s ton Bangladesh scored 338 and set a target of 332 runs to win for New Zealand. They were eventually bowled out for 181 with Mitchell top scoring with 58.

While Rohit Sharma & Co. are unbeaten after ten games, Australia have eight wins on the trot after two successive defeats.

CWC 2023: Player-of-the-Tournament winners in ODI World Cup history

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has shut down the controversy surrounding the Wankhede pitch after a section of international media, in the lead-up to the India vs New Zealand semifinal claimed that BCCI had doctored the pitch to suit the host nation.

Speaking at a presser after the match, Williamson said the pitch was a used one but it played just the way a regular surface is supposed to.

"No, I mean, yeah it was a used wicket, but a pretty good surface really, as we saw. I mean, they got plenty out of it in the first half of the match. And conditions, I guess they change as they go under lights and things, and that's what we've seen throughout this competition," said Williamson.

The Wankhede pitch throughout the tournament has offered a little bit to spinners in the first half before giving the same incentive to fast bowlers under lights as humidity and light breeze come into consideration. The same happened on Wednesday (Nov 15) when Indian bowlers took the ball post 6:30 pm.

"That's what you expect and they played really well. So yeah, I mean it's disappointing to get to this stage and not go further, but also at the same time you sort of reflect on the seven weeks rather than a couple of small moments and we lost to a better side," added the Kiwi captain.

After the match, legendary former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, in a no-holds-barred monologue, slammed the critics of the pitch by terming them 'morons'.

"All the morons who were talking about the pitch change. Just stop. Stop taking potshots at Indian cricket. People have said a lot of things to attract eyeballs or whatever. It is all nonsense. The pitch was there and even if it was changed, it was there before the toss for both the teams," said Gavaskar.

"Stop talking about pitches. Already they are talking about Ahmedabad and the second semifinal hasn't even taken place. They are talking about the pitch being changed in Ahmedabad. Nonsense," he added.

While a section of media created furore regarding the fresh pitch, ICC released a statement saying no regulation was violated in the allotment of the surface.

The Indian spinners had a tough time on the pitch as Williamson and Daryl Mitchell never allowed them to settle. It was Mohammed Shami's genius with the ball that allowed India to walk away with a win when the Kiwis at one point, threatened to chase down 398.

World Cup 2023: Kane Williamson shuts down pitch controversy while Gavaskar terms critics 'morons'

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has asserted that 'anything can happen' in the knockout stage as the Blackcaps get ready to face an unbeaten India in the first semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2023 on November 15. ODI World Cup 2023: Kane Williamson asserts 'anything can happen' when New Zealand play 'their best cricket'

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is all set to roll up his sleeves for the first ODI World Cup semifinal on Wednesday (Nov 15) as his team meets hosts India in the semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. New Zealand, who have been a hoodoo team for Rohit Sharma’s men, will look to cause an upset as they eye a third consecutive final in the 50-over World Cup. For India, revenge will be on the menu card, having lost to New Zealand in the 2019 edition semifinal while also losing the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2021.

Williamson expects big home support

"We are expecting a fairly blue crowd that will be supporting their team. No doubt, they will be very passionate about that. At the same time, as players, when you get opportunities to play in front of those crowds as well, it's special. We remember over the years, at a number of different venues, we have played in front of fans who are not supporting us. We have a small country that doesn't always fill out the stadiums, but you still appreciate the atmosphere that it brings. I am sure it will be a good one tomorrow,” Williamson said during the press conference on Tuesday.

India will have momentum on their side having won all the nine fixtures in the league stage while New Zealand will be aware of the recent threat. The sides met earlier in the campaign in Dharamsala where the Blackcaps were beaten comprehensively after Virat Kohli led the chase. India won the match by four wickets while New Zealand later lost momentum as they failed to win matches having lost to Australia, South Africa, and Pakistan.

Wednesday’s encounter will be crucial for both sides and India will be aware of not repeating the mistakes from the 2019 edition. As things stand, India could field an unchanged side consisting of Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah at the peak of the attack. The likes of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and local boy Rohit Sharma should also provide the necessary width with the bat.

The match will start at 2:00 PM IST with the toss taking place at 1:30 PM at the Wankhede Stadium.

World Cup 2023: Kane Williamson remains sidelined for South Africa clash, to be assessed for Pak game

New Zealand are the team to beat in this tournament. With a stunning eight-wicket win over Bangladesh in their latest World Cup match in Chennai on Friday, the Kiwis have maintained their position on the top of the points table with three wins in as many games. Captain Kane Williamson, who on his return scored a brilliant unbeaten 78 before getting hurt on his hand, applauded the pacers for laying a foundation early on.

“I thought the guys in the first half of the performance were excellent. They just banged the wicket hard; it was a bit variable. And then later it was nice to build those partnerships and take the game late,” Kane said of his team’s overall performance.

Electing to bowl first after winning the toss at the Chepauk, New Zealand seamers made light work of Bangladesh, reducing them to 56 for four at one stage. Although veterans Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim steadied the ship with a 96-run stand for the fifth wicket, Lockie Ferguson’s extra pace broke Bangladesh’s back.

The right-arm seamer returned with three wickets for 49 runs, while Trent Boult and Matt Henry picked two wickets each. On a dry Chennai surface, where spinners were supposed to make all the noises, Kiwi seamers did the job for their side. Praising Lockie, Kane said,

“He was outstanding. You come here expecting the spinners to play a big role, but the seamers did really well today. Lockie, he just keeps running in, bowling at high pace, and he hasn't had some of that good fortune, so thoroughly deserved,” Kane added.

Kane is happy to be back

Kane Williamson was out for nearly six months with a leg injury, missing all the action since March-end. His much-awaited return to the side yielded the right results, as he guided his team to an eight-wicket win despite again suffering an injury scare later in the innings.

“It was nice to be out there and be a part of some of those partnerships, some tough periods with the new ball were hard work. But just wanted to build partnerships and get close to that target. [on Daryll Mitchell] He's a great competitor, makes valuable contributions more often than not, he's a team-first guy, and he's great to watch,” Kane said of his partnership with Mitchell.

Praising Lockie, Kane said, “He was outstanding. You come here expecting the spinners to play a big role, but the seamers did really well today. Lockie, he just keeps running in, bowling at high pace, and he hasn't had some of that good fortune, so thoroughly deserved,” Kane added. Kane is happy to be back Kane Williamson was out for nearly six months with a leg injury, missing all the action since March-end. New Zealand will face Afghanistan after five days on Wednesday (Oct 18) at the same venue in their next World Cup 2023 match. World Cup 2023, NZ vs BAN: Kane Williamson lauds bowlers for superb start, updates on injured finger

New Zealand suffered a huge blow as recent scans confirmed an undisplaced fracture to Kane Williamson’s left thumb, putting his participation in this World Cup in limbo. Per the latest reports, Kane will stay with the squad in India, aiming to return to the XI during the group games by next month. Keeper-batter Tom Blundell is called in as cover for the injured right-hander.

Upon his return to the playing XI in an official white-ball game for the first since March-end this year, Kane scored a brilliant unbeaten 78 against Bangladesh in Chennai on Friday, guiding his team to an eight-wicket win. He, however, suffered a blow to his hand while completing a run, forcing him to retire hurt.

Even during the post-match presentation, Kane hinted the blow to his hand didn’t look good and would go for scans on Saturday. With the final reports now out, Kane will again be sidelined during this World Cup 2023.

Earlier, while playing for Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2023 opener against CSK, Kane suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which ruled him out for nearly six months. CWC: Blow to New Zealand as Kane Williamson suffers fracture on left thumb, Tom Blundell called in as cover

New Zealand regular captain Kane Williamson could return to the playing XI for his first game of the World Cup 2023 against Bangladesh in Chennai on Friday, he hinted during the pre-match presser. The right-handed batter, who appeared in both warm-up matches for the Kiwis, sat out of the first two games to complete his recovery from the leg injury he suffered at the IPL opener earlier this year.

Detailing everyone on his road to recovery, Kane said he enjoyed this phase as the progress was very good, and is excited to return to the XI. He said getting added to the CWC squad came as a boost.

"It's been quite a journey but largely a good one that's had some really good progress, and you know I've said a number of times, (I'm) really excited to be named in the World Cup squad, be sitting here now and really excited at the prospect of tomorrow, which is another big challenge for us," Williamson told media ahead of his side’s third clash.

"A new venue, new opposition, as we know, which always happens in world events. We're looking forward to the challenge," Kane, who played 161 ODIs for New Zealand, added.

Having been sidelined for close to six months since suffering the horrific-looking injury, Kane said he enjoys the prospect of returning to the white-ball cricket after a long hiatus.

"It certainly started with strength and range in terms of the knee, and then gradually trying to improve that and control a bit.

"And so, yeah, I mean each week throughout the last period of time since I've been, I guess, rehabbing has been really important and really valuable.

So, it was nice to get a little bit of that time in the last week or two, and like I say, I look forward to tomorrow as a side,” Kane added.

Who sits out if Kane comes in?

The big question for New Zealand management would be to sit out who if Kane is declared fit and available for selection for the Bangladesh game.

In his absence, spin-bowling all-rounder Rachin Ravindra batted at three and scored a hundred and fifty in two matches. While Kane is likely to take up his regular number three slot, Rachin could be demoted to lower-order, perhaps in place of Jimmy Neesham, who would likely be benched.

Kane looked in good touch during the two practice matches, having scored a fifty in one. His return to the side would come as a boost, as they aim to bury past demons to realise their dream of winning the World Cup this time.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh lost one and won one in their outings so far.

ODI World Cup 2023: Returning Kane Williamson leads New Zealand to third consecutive win vs Bangladesh

New Zealand won their second ODI World Cup 2023 game against the Netherlands by 99 runs, consolidating their position at the top of the table. The fact that New Zealand were without their top batter and regular skipper Kane Williamson and ace bowler Tim Southee, makes these two wins even more sweet.

While Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra hit centuries in the first game for New Zealand against England, all the top five batters scored runs in their second game against the Dutch as the Kiwis posted 322/7 in their 50 overs.

For the Blackcaps, Will Young scored 70 while the first game's Player of the Match Rachin Ravindra scored 51 in the Netherlands games. Apart from them, Daryl Mitchell scored 48 and stand-in skipper Tom Latham also managed to contribute 53.

ODI World Cup 2023: Who will New Zealand drop when Kane Williamson is back? Dav Whatmore answers

Kane Williamson has been ruled of New Zealand's second match of the ODI World Cup 2023 as he recovers from the ACL injury sustained during the IPL 2023. The Kiwi batter also didn't take part in the Blackcaps' opening fixture against England as well. New Zealand had won the tournament opener against England by nine wickets and play Netherlands next on October 9 in Hyderabad.

The news was reported by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on their official Instagram handle.

"Kane's been progressing very well,” New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said on Sunday (October 8) as reported by the ICC.

"I think the fielding is still the element for him that he's just got to get a little bit higher, and he gets a little bit more trust in his body," he added before saying that the is confident of Williamson taking part in the third game on October 13 vs Bangladesh.

"But he's progressing really well and we are pretty confident that he will be playing the third match for us," added the Kiwi head coach.

"We've got another training to get through today, so we'll finalise the team (for the match against Netherlands) once we've got through that training."

"But at this stage with Kane, we are looking like the third game is when he will start the tournament.”

In Williamson's absence, New Zealand handed Rachin Ravindra his ODI World Cup debut vs England. The batter didn't disappoint as he scored fastest World Cup hundred for New Zealand during his unbeaten innings of 123 off 96 balls. Also Watch: Sri Lanka's Kasun Rajitha hits NO-LOOK six off Marco Jansen vs South Africa "But he's progressing really well and we are pretty confident that he will be playing the third match for us," added the Kiwi head coach. "We've got another training to get through today, so we'll finalise the team (for the match against Netherlands) once we've got through that training." "But at this stage with Kane, we are looking like the third game is when he will start the tournament.” In Williamson's absence, New Zealand handed Rachin Ravindra his ODI World Cup debut vs England. The batter didn't disappoint as he scored fastest World Cup hundred for New Zealand during his unbeaten innings of 123 off 96 balls. He was also awarded Player of the Match for his ton and bowling figures of 1/76. Ravindra, with Devon Conway who also hit 152 not out, tore apart England bowling attack with unbeaten 274-run partnership in Ahmedabad as the reached the 284 with nine wickets in hand.

ODI World Cup 2023: Kane Williamson ruled out of Netherlands match in a blow to New Zealand

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson's fifty in warm-up game against Pakistan injected a lot of confidence in Kiwi team's ODI World Cup campaign. Williamson, who had injured his ACL in IPL 2023, scored a fifty, although not fluent but enough to set up a successful run-chase of 346 runs. It's a massive boost for Blackcaps' plans who had taken the risk of including injured Williamson in the squad. The skipper, however, won't be playing the opening fixture against England but hopes to play afterwards.

"Just great to get through some batting out in the middle and be part of a match, which was really nice and it [knee] held up pretty well," Williamson said after New Zealand won the game. "[It needed] a little bit of icing afterwards but it's all part of the process. Yeah, it wasn't a reality certainly five months ago and [I've] been quite fortunate with some of that recovery and to be named in the squad is really exciting for me and just really looking forward to getting out there again. It was nice to do that today (September 29)."

"It was largely pretty good, which was pleasing. Nice to sort of build on that. It was a fantastic hit-out obviously. Pakistan are an outstanding side. I mean both teams were trying to get what they wanted out of it, in terms of bowlers getting overs they needed and time in the legs. So, it's an exercise, but also nice to compete and do all those things. As a bowling unit and batting unit, plenty to take away from it. There's always things to work on and it was a great batting performance today. It was a really good surface and it's nice that we were able to put together partnerships and get time in the middle," added Williamson.

The Kiwi skipper also aims to take to larger part in New Zealand's second warm-up game against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram on October 2.

Williamson, New Zealand make statement

Asked to chase 346 to win, the Blackcaps did not have the best starts as experienced Devon Conway was dismissed for a golden duck in the second over. However, Rachin Ravindra (97) and Williamson (54) then led the foundation for New Zealand’s excellent run chase. Williamson looked in great nick but called it a day after scoring the fifty. He retired hurt on 54 after the conclusion of the 18th over, paving the way for other batters to chip in important playing time before the World Cup.

Later, New Zealand built their innings and looked in total control of the run chase as Daryl Mitchell (59) joined Ravindra in the middle. Ravindra, though was unfortunate to have not completed his hundred as he was dismissed for 97 by Agha Salman. Like Williamson, Mitchell also retired hurt to give playing time to others.

Kane Williamson scores fifty in statement New Zealand win against Pakistan in ODI World Cup warm-up contest

New Zealand will be without their regular captain, Kane Williamson, in the World Cup curtain-raiser against England on October 5 in Ahmedabad. Kane, who continues to recover from the knee injury he sustained during the IPL opener in March at the same venue, is said to be playing against Pakistan in the side’s first warm-up game on Friday in Hyderabad.

While he will play as a pure batter in both practice matches, emphasising doing some fielding throughout the innings, Kane will sit out of the marquee tie against the defending champions.

In his absence, keeper-batter Tom Latham will lead the Kiwis into their first match of the World Cup, head coach Gary Stead confirmed.

The coach said the team management is tracking Kane’s injury very closely and is happy with the progress.

They, however, don’t want Kane to rush into attaining full fitness and rather will take it day by day.

"Right from the start we've taken a long-term view on Kane's return to play," New Zealand's head coach Gary Stead said. "His recovery is tracking well, and it's now a matter of making sure he can cope with the rigors and intensity of international cricket. We'll continue to take a day-by-day approach to Kane's rehabilitation and certainly won't be putting any pressure on him to return before he is ready."

Coming from a long injury layoff, Kane trained a little with the team on their tour to England, preparing himself for the World Cup showdown. As he nears full fitness, Kane expressed his desire to stay with the team and give himself every chance to get in time for most games during the event.

"It's just wanting to progress [with] what I am doing now - the running, the fielding, and also time in the middle with the bat," Williamson had said ahead of the team's departure to India earlier this week.

"The load is going to keep increasing, so there is a little bit of an unknown. But it has felt pretty good really in the last few weeks, [I'm] hoping it continues to feel like that. But we're definitely looking to touch on more stuff, [and] introducing myself into the game mode, which is something which we haven't had the opportunity to do,” Skipper added.

Blow to New Zealand as captain Kane Williamson ruled out of World Cup opener against England

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and ace seamer Tim Southee are likely to get fit in time for the World Cup 2023 opener against England on October 5, head coach Gary Stead hinted. While Kane ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the IPL 2023, Southee dislocated and fractured his thumb while playing against England in the recently concluded ODI series. Despite being injured, both got picked in the final 15 as Kiwis gear up for curtain raiser in Ahmedabad.

Kane, who looked unlikely at first to make it to India in October following his injury, let alone leading the side into the marquee event, is said to be progressing well, giving himself every possible chance to attain full fitness for the England tie.

"It's [about] working through those warm-up games to get as much out of it as I can - personally and as a team - without sort of bothering too much," Williamson said on Wednesday before the team's departure for India.

The legendary Kiwi batter said he aims to get involved as much in the two warm-up matches, starting with one against Pakistan in Hyderabad on Friday, September 29.

"There is a strong desire to basically be involved in those as much as I can; we've got two of them before our first competition game. And basically, it's just wanting to progress [with] what I am doing now - the running, the fielding, and also time in the middle with the bat,” Kane said.

With Williamson taking his time to get back to his absolute best fitness-wise, he admits to changing his usual fielding position, opting not to stand in the slips if not required.

"We will definitely consider some of that," Kane said. "Where I field is usually at mid-off, which will probably remain the case. Probably slightly better suited to it than the square of the wicket. Potentially some slip, but I won't be standing there if we don't require one."

Stead on Southee’s chances

Senior-most Kiwi seamer Tim Southee dislocated his thumb recently but is recovering quickly than expected. As per head coach Gary Stead, Southee might stay out of the XI for the two practice matches, but if he continues to recover at a similar pace, the right-arm seamer could make it to the XI for the game against England.

"Tim's seen a hand specialist yesterday, and the key thing for him is really making sure the wound heals. We're still really hopeful that he'll be available early on in the tournament for selection," Stead said. "He's had five pins put in his thumb... He's comfortable, and he'll be ready somewhere around that first or second game.

"So, it's all gone really well. He's had a check in with the surgeon and a hand therapist. They think there might be a little bit of pain still, but he's a tough and resilient character. So we are fortunate to have him with our squad still," Stead said.

Kane Williamson, Southee likely to get fit for World Cup opener against England, hints coach Gary Stead

Kane Williamson will captain New Zealand at next month's World Cup after making "sufficient progress" in his recovery from a knee injury, the country's cricket board said on Monday. Williamson underwent surgery after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the Indian Premier League in early April, which had cast doubt over his participation in the tournament.

The 33-year-old had been given two weeks to prove his fitness for the Oct. 5- Nov. 19 50-overs World Cup in India. "Williamson has made sufficient progress in his recovery to allow him to be included in the squad for the tournament starting in October," NZC said in a statement.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead praised Williamson's "phenomenal dedication", adding: "He's left no stone unturned in trying to get back playing cricket at the highest level. We are delighted to be in a place to select him.

"At the same time, he's also kept perspective about his recovery and hasn't wanted to rush or force his way back too early. As we've previously said, it's great he wants to play cricket for New Zealand in the long term." However, Stead stressed that there was no clear timeline for Williamson's return.

"As we've said throughout this process we want to give Kane every bit of available time to aid his recovery," Stead said. "The World Cup is not a short tournament and we will continue to monitor his progress over the next month ahead of the first tournament match."

Kane Williamson will captain New Zealand at next month's World Cup after making "sufficient progress" in his recovery from a knee injury, the country's cricket board said on Monday.

Also read: Asia Cup: 'Pakistan fans were chanting anti-India slogans' - Gautam Gambhir reacts to his obscene action "At the same time, he's also kept perspective about his recovery and hasn't wanted to rush or force his way back too early. As we've previously said, it's great he wants to play cricket for New Zealand in the long term." However, Stead stressed that there was no clear timeline for Williamson's return. "As we've said throughout this process we want to give Kane every bit of available time to aid his recovery," Stead said. "The World Cup is not a short tournament and we will continue to monitor his progress over the next month ahead of the first tournament match." The NZC added that the rest of the squad would be announced on Sept. 11. New Zealand play England in the final Twenty20 international of a four-match series on Tuesday, before facing the same opponents in a four-match one-day international series. Kane Williamson set to captain New Zealand in CWC 2023 after progress in injury recovery

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is given a deadline to prove his fitness for the Cricket World Cup 2023 which starts October 5. With all teams needing to submit their 15-man squads to the ICC by September 5, with a clause of making changes until September 28, Williamson has about two weeks to attain complete fitness and get into reckoning for the mega event.

Playing for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023, Williamson tore his ACL during the opener against Chennai Super Kings on March 31, and at that point, it looked like his chances of recovering in time for the World Cup were bleak. However, following surgery and scheduled rehab, Kane returned to the nets earlier this month, facing some throw-downs.

Kane's progress is encouraging, and head coach Gary Stead feels the same, saying they would give every opportunity to the batter to prove his fitness for the marquee event.

"[We've] got about two weeks from now until we name that side," New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said. "Going to give him every chance and use that full amount of time.

"He's in full rehab mode; he's back batting in the nets again, which is great to see. He's progressing really well, but again, there's a lot of work for him still to do to make sure he gets to where we need him to be,” the head coach added.

‘Kane can still travel to India'

Given what he brings to the table, the New Zealand camp will perhaps do everything possible to tag him along. Even if it means Kane getting included despite not clearing the fitness test, and then by the time the World Cup begins, he could attain complete fitness. Or, he can be part of the travelling reserves – but in that case, someone from the original squad needs to get injured for Kane to get roped into the side team for the CWC matches.

"They are all the things we are weighing up right now," Stead said. "There's a chance that even if Kane was named that he wouldn't be available right at the start of the tournament. But he also might be, and he also might not be ready.

"It's still a little bit of crystal-ball gazing [about] where he will be at. Yes, of course, we want him at the World Cup, but there is that bigger picture in mind that we want Kane Williamson fit for the rest of his career,” Stead said.

Meanwhile, New Zealand will travel to England for four T20Is and as many ODIs, starting August 30.

Both these teams will face off in the World Cup 2023 opener on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

It’s not over yet! Kane Williamson given deadline to prove fitness for World Cup 2023

Former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis has predicted the highest run-getter in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 being held in India. The forthcoming mega event will kick off in the subcontinent on October 05 with the defending champions Jos Buttler-led England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad whereas hosts Rohit Sharma-led India face Australia, in Chennai, on October 08.

Kallis, a legend who represented South Africa in 166 Tests, 328 ODIs and 25 T20Is, feels England captain Buttler will end up as the leading run-scorer in the upcoming edition. In the last edition, in England and Wales, Rohit Sharma ended with 648 runs -- most by any batter.

"I think Jos Butler will be the leading run scorer. An outside call, but I fancy him in those conditions. Along with England having a good World Cup, I think, um, me, he's going to be the one guy that stands up," said Kallis while speaking to the ICC.

Buttler has played 165 ODIs for the Three Lions, scoring 4,647 runs at a strike rate of 117.97 along with 11 tons and 24 fifties. He has a lot of experience of playing in India, thanks to his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he plays for the Rajasthan Royals (RR). Overall, he has scored 3,223 runs from 96 IPL matches, at an impressive strike-rate of 148.32.

However, Buttler doesn't have a good ODI record in India -- having managed 83 runs in eight matches so far at an average of 11. Thus, he has a task to improve his record and help England successfully defend their title. The one-time winners have a plethora of superstars in their line-up, such as Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Moeen Ali, etc. Having already led England to the championship in his only ICC event as captain, during the 2022 T20 World Cup, Buttler will feel confident leading the English line-up in the upcoming big-ticket event.

Other batters who can end up as the highest run-getter in CWC '23 are Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Babar Azam, Quinton de Kock, David Warner, etc.

CWC '23: SA legend Jacques Kallis predicts THIS English star to be the leading run-getter

New Zealand’s regular ODI skipper Kane Williamson could be on the flight to India for the 50-over World Cup later this year even if he remains unfit to take the field, claims Kiwi head coach Gary Stead. Gary said while they can’t make Kane bat in the middle, they can at least use his guidance and mind, off the pitch to ensure players deliver on the big stage. By this, Gary meant that the management would try and utilise Kane’s presence to the utmost extent, even if he were to tag along as a mentor.

Ahead of the first of the five-match ODI series against Pakistan, Gary, while speaking with the media, said he and the management are happy with how the surgery on Kane’s injured ACL has gone, and though it’s in the very initial stage, it’s hard to say what would be the status around World Cup time.

"It's still far too early to know. He's had the operation and, to date, what we know, that's been successful. So he is in the very, very early stages of his rehab programme," Stead told reporters ahead of Pakistan ODIs.

Stead added road ahead for Kane isn't going to be easy and that his chances of regaining full fitness before the showpiece event look all but bleak.

"It's obviously pretty non-weight-bearing at this stage, and he's in a brace. It's really just meeting milestones as we go. Our line around Kane, at the moment, is still it's unlikely that he will be available, but we certainly don't want to rule out a person of his class and calibre, and the things he brings to this team, too early in case there is that chance still,” Stead added.

During the IPL 2023 opener between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings, Kane suffered a leg injury while attempting to take a catch near the boundary line. Following an awkward landing that looked worrisome on camera, Kane was taken off the field and later got ruled out of the tournament. Upon landing in New Zealand, he underwent surgery, and started with his rehab after that.

In his absence, experienced campaigner Tom Latham is taking care of the captaincy duties and is leading New Zealand’s white-ball squads on the current away tour of Pakistan. Under his leadership, Kiwis drew the five-match T20Is 2-2.

Kane Williamson can still travel to India for 50-over World Cup even if he's unfit, says Gary Stead

Kane Williamson, New Zealand’s ODI captain, is likely to miss the upcoming 50-over World Cup in India later this year. Following the horrific-looking leg injury he suffered during the opening match of IPL 2023 playing for Gujarat Titans, where he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, Kane will now undergo surgery for the same in about three-week time, which will rule him out of competitive cricket for around eight months.

Kane Williamson to undergo surgery in three weeks following leg injury, set to miss World Cup in India

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is said to be pacing his return to international cricket after suffering an injury during IPL 2023 earlier. In April, the right-handed batter underwent surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. He has now resumed training to make an unlikely return to the side for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India.

Speaking on the sidelines of the New Zealand team's training session at Bay Oval, Kane said he is looking forward to resuming batting in nets and working with the group and some faces included, adding he wants to reconnect a bit with the game having lost a few months of on-field action.

Kane Williamson continues to take baby steps in recovery as CWC’23 return remains far-fetched dream

Former India opener Aakash Chopra has said that based on his current form, Virat Kohli doesn’t belong to Fab Four anymore, a quartet that includes Joe Root, Kane Williamson and Steve Smith. These stalwarts have excelled in Tests, particularly in the past decade. However, with Virat going through a lean patch since 2020, which also saw a dip in his average under 50 for the first time in many years, Aakash feels the former India captain is running behind.

As things stand, Kane Williamson is sidelined due to a leg injury he suffered in IPL 2023 opener against Chennai Super Kings, while both Root and Smith are playing in the Ashes – wherein both have notched a hundred in two Tests played. Virat, on the other hand, is preparing for the West Indies series, having last scored a hundred in Tests in March early this year.

Since 2020, Virat has not been among runs, let alone hitting centuries at will the way he used to do before. During India’s first Pink-Ball Test against Bangladesh in 2019, Virat hit a hundred at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, and it took the chase maestro around three years to complete his next three-digit score in international cricket.

Since completing that hundred in November 2019, Virat averages nearly 26 in Tests and has looked out of touch on most occasions.

Speaking on the same lines on his YouTube channel, Aakash said much like Kohli, David Warner, a veteran batter, is also going through the same patch, having attained a poor record against England’s Stuart Broad, getting out to him for the record 17th time.

Chopra said Virat, in current form, is out of Fab 4; as a result, it is now just Fab 3.

“Kane and Joe Root, no question about it. Steve Smith, averaging 50 with six hundreds, no question about him. But David Warner and Virat Kohli, at this point in time, are not a part of Fab 4. There’s no Fab 4 right now, there’s Fab 3," Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Babar Azam not far from entering the Fab 4 group: Chopra

Aakash further opined that the way Babar Azam is going about scoring runs on a consistent basis in international cricket, the time is not far when he would be considered among the top four batters in all formats.

“You might think of adding Babar Azam’s name in there. But while there’s no doubt that he has scored runs in Test cricket, I don’t think he is part of Fab 4 at the moment. I’m only talking about Test matches here," Aakash added.

ALSO READ: 'Pak won't travel...:' Pakistan minister puts Men In Green's participation in ODI WC under cloud of doubt Since completing that hundred in November 2019, Virat averages nearly 26 in Tests and has looked out of touch on most occasions. Babar Azam not far from entering the Fab 4 group: Chopra Aakash further opined that the way Babar Azam is going about scoring runs on a consistent basis in international cricket, the time is not far when he would be considered among the top four batters in all formats. “You might think of adding Babar Azam’s name in there. But while there’s no doubt that he has scored runs in Test cricket, I don’t think he is part of Fab 4 at the moment. I’m only talking about Test matches here," Aakash added. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

It was during the 13th over into the first innings when this incident happened. Placed at deep mid-wicket area, Kane tried stopping the ball from going over the ropes.
