New Zealand Test captain Tim Southee admits he doesn’t have answers to how and when this long-standing club vs country debate can end but has urged all cricketing boards and the franchise leagues to come together and find a solution. With plenty of first-team players deciding against signing a central contract with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) to make themselves available for franchise-based leagues worldwide, Southee feels ‘something’ needs to be done to bring in balance and help players take a call based on their preferences.

Key players like former all-format captain Kane Williamson and speedsters Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Adam Milne have opted out of the central contract list offered by NZC in recent years. Moreover, attacking opener Finn Allen, who signed a two-year deal with Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, and Devon Conway, who signed a casual contract with NZC, are the latest to join the list.

Though Conway will remain available for all nine Tests this season, he will miss the white-ball competitions in January 2025, like Williamson, to feature in the SA20 tournament.&nbsp;

"Yeah, I think that's decisions that each individual board are taking into account," Southee said on the sidelines of the CEAT cricket rating awards in Mumbai.&nbsp;

"So, at this stage, obviously, the franchise leagues and the franchise world are growing. It would be nice to see the international [boards] and the leagues working together in some way because, especially Test cricket, I think for a lot of players, is still the pinnacle of the format.

"I guess it's the way that cricket is going and then the amount of T20 leagues that are popping up. To look at it from Kane and Devon's point of view, they're still committed to New Zealand cricket, and we've got nine Test matches coming up. So, they're committed to those Test matches,” he continued.

<h2>A problem in the hindsight</h2>

Although all these players not signing a central contract with NZC is not the biggest problem within their cricket structure as of now, Southee doesn’t discount the chances of it creating havoc in times to come.&nbsp;

Committing to Test cricket, a format he calls his favourite and ‘closest to the heart’, Southee admits he doesn’t have answers to how one solution can solve this growing issue within the cricket circuit worldwide.&nbsp;

“I don't have the answers. Right now, I don't think many people do. So I think it's about working out what's best for each individual board and their players. New Zealand Cricket seems to think that's the best way for the next 12 months.&nbsp;

“I don't think Kane and Devon will miss a lot of cricket for New Zealand. So for them to have the flexibility in doing that, but still also be committed to New Zealand, which I think that's where the casual playing agreement comes in,” the NZ Test skipper said.

Meanwhile, New Zealand will travel to Asia to play six Tests - one against Afghanistan in India, two against Sri Lanka and then three against India. Upon returning home, New Zealand will host England for the three Tests.&nbsp;

So, they're committed to those Test matches,” he continued. Kane Williamson was named on Wednesday to return from injury and lead New Zealand in their Twenty20 international home series against Pakistan.

World class batter Williamson missed last month's ODI and T20 series against Bangladesh while he rehabilitated a knee injury sustained nine months ago.

The 33-year-old recovered to play in the 50-over World Cup and a two-Test series in Bangladesh but was rested from white ball commitments last month as a precaution.

Williamson's controlled return will include a rest in game three of the five-match Pakistan series starting on January 12.

Allrounder Mitchell Santner will lead the Black Caps in that match in Dunedin.&nbsp;

Opening batter Devon Conway returns after also missing both white ball series against Bangladesh, while pace bowlers Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson will both make their first international appearances since being injured during the World Cup.

Seamer Kyle Jamieson and spinner Michael Bracewell were not considered because of ongoing injuries while a notable omission from the 15-man squad is allrounder Rachin Ravindra, who scored 578 runs in a series of breakout innings at the World Cup.

Kane Williamson, the designated captain for Bangladesh T20Is, alongside lanky seamer Kyle Jamieson, is rested on medical advice, while all-rounder Mitchell Santner will lead the home side. Young Rachin Ravindra and seamer Jacob Duffy are named replacements.&nbsp;

Considering New Zealand’s upcoming schedule and with a focus on the South Africa and Australia series, Kane and Jamieson are provided extended rest.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, skipper Kane Williamson missed around seven months of competitive cricket after suffering a knee injury in March earlier this year and returned during the 2023 World Cup. Per a statement released by New Zealand Cricket (NZC), Kane will undergo knee rehabilitation before rejoining the team for the marquee series.

"Kane will undergo a period of knee rehabilitation and strengthening following his recent return to play in India and Bangladesh," NZC said.

As for Jamieson, he will sit out of the three T20Is against Bangladesh and Pakistan in January 2024. Earlier, the seamer had withdrawn from the Bangladesh ODIs when they were leading the series 2-0.

"We want both Kane and Kyle to be in the best possible place leading into the next block of Test cricket against South Africa and Australia," Gary Stead, the New Zealand coach, said in a statement.&nbsp;

"Based on discussions with the medical staff and the players, it was decided a period of rehabilitation and conditioning was the best option for both of them,” he added.

Talking about the fast bowler Jacob - a seasoned T20 cricketer, Stead said he brings a lot of experience, and having worked on his white-ball game, he can come in handy.&nbsp;

The head coach further praised the young Rachin Ravindra, who has shown a desire to learn and get better at his game.

"Jacob is an experienced T20 cricketer and always brings a lot when he is part of the BlackCaps environment. He's worked very hard on his white-ball skills in recent seasons. Rachin adds to any environment he's a part of, and has a great desire to learn and develop his game - across all three formats,” Stead said.

"Based on discussions with the medical staff and the players, it was decided a period of rehabilitation and conditioning was the best option for both of them,” he added. Talking about the fast bowler Jacob - a seasoned T20 cricketer, Stead said he brings a lot of experience, and having worked on his white-ball game, he can come in handy. The head coach further praised the young Rachin Ravindra, who has shown a desire to learn and get better at his game. "Jacob is an experienced T20 cricketer and always brings a lot when he is part of the BlackCaps environment. He's worked very hard on his white-ball skills in recent seasons. Rachin adds to any environment he's a part of, and has a great desire to learn and develop his game - across all three formats,” Stead said.
