Samrat Prithviraj Vs Vikram: Kamal Haasan starrer rules box office, Akshay's film shows a steady growth

The versatile Kamal Haasan has done playback for a Hindi song after a long time. The actor who is gearing up for the release of his new film 'Vikram: Hitlist', has rendered his voice for a song called 'Badle Badle'. The song was released on Tuesday and it is the Hindi version of the super hit song 'Pathala Pathala'.

It has been performed by superstar Kamal Haasan and Raftaar with lyrics furnished by Raqueeb Alam and music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, who has earlier doled out popular tracks like 'Kolaveri Di' and Maari Thara Local'.
Cinema has a history of actresses who died young. Madhubala: died of a heart ailment at age 33. Meena Kumari: died at 39 of an alcohol-induced liver problem. Geeta Bali: died at 35 of smallpox. Smita Patil: died at 31 of post-pregnancy complications. Vimi: in her 30s died of alcoholism. Parveen Babi: Age 55, died of severe depression. Divya Bharti: died in a freak accident at age 19. Jiah Khan: died at 25. Silk Smitha: died by suicide at age 36.

Silk, real name Vijayalakshmi Vadlapatla, had to give up her schooling at the age of 10 to support her large family. The name Silk Smitha came from the 1979 Tamil film Vandichakkaram where she played a character named Silk. From then onwards she was typecast as a sex symbol, her sizzling dances often adding sizeable box office clout to the films that she starred in.

Kamal Haasan with whom Silk Smitha danced to the number 'Oh babua yeh mahua' in the film 'Sadma', spoke about her to me in an interview some years ago. "My erotic dance with Silk Smitha didn’t really belong in the film. It was a commercial concession and I had to go along with it. It was not part of the original script. We decided to put in an erotic dance, but in a way not done in any film before and without spending money. So we had just me and Silk."

Kamal Haasan revealed that Silk Smitha, known as soft porn queen for her gyrations, couldn’t dance to save her life. “She didn’t know how to dance…at all! The dance was choreographed by Prabhu Deva’s father Sundaram Master. He just incorporated whatever she could do. Silk was a brilliant mimic and could imbibe what she learnt.”

Though untutored in fashionable ways, Silk Smitha knew her clothes and makeup.

Recalled Kamal Haasan, “With due respect, she was from a village. But she had an astounding sense of fashion. She kept reading fashion magazines. She would insist on cooking for Balu and me, though she was a terrible cook. She couldn’t even identify the ingredients.I lost touch with her soon after 'Sadma'.”

Kamal Haasan revealed Silk Smitha’s life was no bed of roses. “Hers was a very hard life. She had gone through a lot. She used to share her horrific experiences with us.”

Thankfully she didn’t live to see Ekta Kapoor’s biopic 'The Dirty Picture' allegedly based on Silk Smitha’s life, cannibalizing just parts of her real-life and shamelessly making up the rest. Vidya Balan looked nothing like Silk. Her performance was more self-congratulatory than immersive. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say Silk died again after 'The Dirty Picture' was released.

‘Vikram’ first look revealed: Kamal Haasan, Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi send fans into a tizzy

Kamal Haasan’s fledgeling political party Makkal Needhi Maiam is witnessing the mass resignation of its top rung leaders after the party faced a severe rout in their maiden Assembly Elections in Tamil Nadu. The developments came to light after the party’s Central Governing Body(CGB) met at their headquarters in Chennai on Thursday evening.

WION has learnt that Haasan had asked members of his party’s Central Governing body to tender their resignations from the respective posts they held(not from the primary membership of the party), following which they obliged. This was ostensibly done because Haasan wanted to do some” soul-searching and make fundamental changes in the party”, after drawing a blank.

“He demanded the resignation and we complied. I think it is because of the defeat and the President decides to look into who is required in the Central governing body. He lost by a small margin, but he did win hearts. It was a wrong constituency selection, had he contested anywhere in Chennai he would’ve won hands down” CK Kumaravel a top entrepreneur, who was asked to resign from the CGB told Zee media.

Shortly after the meeting ended, Kamal’s party issued a statement saying that CGB members Dr R. Mahendran, Muruganandam, Maurya, Thangavelu, Umadevi, CK Kumaravel, Sekar and Suresh Iyer. However, it also added that Kamal Haasan himself would decide on accepting these resignations and the further course of action.

Among those who resigned is Dr R. Mahendran, who served as the Vice President of the fledgeling party. However, unlike the others, Mahendran himself had tendered his resignation (both from the VP post and primary membership) to Kamal Haasan. He also shared with the media, an 8-page letter he had written to Kamal Haasan, outlining the reasons for his decision to quit and a single-page letter written to the party cadre.

Mahendran’s letter to Haasan said that the actor had a non-democratic style of running the party and that Kamal had favoured some advisors and consultants whose services did not benefit the party in any manner. It alleges that Kamal’s party was being pushed to function as a fan club and that the veteran actor was being “managed and manipulated” by his advisors. “I had lost all hope for any semblance of change in how the party is being run over the past one and a half years” Mahendran had written, urging Kamal Haasan to look back at their journey.

“There was no discussion with the Governing body or EC after the poll rout, neither was any planned, but today Haasan comes and says that “this is my party” when the other members pleaded that this was our party. Stating the so-called restructuring of the party, he’s asked the others to resign, whereas I had prepared myself to leave the party, over the last month. It’s reactionary, this is the style of functioning I knew that he will continue to have.” Mahendran told Zee Media. Mahendran believes that if his exit changes the party, then it is his biggest service to the party.

A while after Mahendran’s statement was released, Kamal Haasan shared a statement accusing Mahendran of being a betrayer, who did not let others grow and as someone who was trying to pin the blame of his incompetence and dishonesty on others. “There was a collective voice asking for the ouster of betrayers. The first among the list of betrayers were Dr.R. Mahendran” the statement said, without elaborating any further.

Kamal Haasan’s fledgeling political party Makkal Needhi Maiam is witnessing the mass resignation of its top rung leaders after the party faced a severe rout in their maiden Assembly Elections in Tamil Nadu.

Kamal Haasan’s political party Makkal Needhi Maiam crumbles, sees multiple resignations

In Tamil Nadu’s personality-cult dominated political landscape, image is everything and sometimes even imitations are accepted. For several decades, political parties have been hiring lookalike artists of actors and politicians during the campaign season. Dressed up like the stalwarts of the state’s political arena these artists sing and dance, deliver dialogues, imitate mannerisms, all for garnering votes.

With their make-up kits and tailored-to-perfection costumes, it just takes a few minutes for these artists to transform from their real to reel selves. As this is the first Assembly election in Tamil Nadu sans tall leaders Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi, the artists representing these leaders are the most in-demand.

“Lookalikes do have an impact on voters minds. This time, since the stalwarts are not with us, the lookalikes have a bigger role to play. It rekindles the memories of the old times among the senior voters” says Jitu, a Madurai resident.

Working mostly in the evenings, these artists travel across the state and campaign for various parties, with some members even capable of donning multiple roles. However, the changing nature of politics itself and the digital campaigns, targeted advertising has significantly impacted their profession.

Cine Star Abinaya, a city-based troupe has about 20 artists, they play - MGR, Jayalalithaa, Karunanidhi, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Vijayakanth, Sathyaraj, Ajith, Vijay and many other personalities. There are even separate persons to represent the MGR in his trademark sunglass, white-cap Chief Minister avatar and also the funky-colored costume-wearing cine-star MGR.

During peak election season, an artist earns upto Rs 2000 per performance, but they say that work has become scarce these days, when compared to a decade ago.

“Post-election campaign some of us drive autos, some work as shopkeepers, but there are also a few of us who are fully time artists” says Saraa, who runs Cine Star Abinaya.

He adds that many cannot sustain this profession after a certain age, as they have to go perform until late in the evenings and often have their meals well after midnight, thus affecting health.

Eswaran who plays Rajinikanth and MK Stalin is a full-time performer with no other source of income. “During non-campaign season I perform at temple festivals, I can also sing, so that’s an added advantage” he says.

When asked about their routine and fitness regimen, the artists say that they have to maintain diet control and walk a few minutes every day to maintain their physique and ensure that they continue to resemble their starry avatars.

Speaking of their livelihoods and families, the artists say that they are able to make ends meet during election season, but that isn’t so after election work dries up. Their lament is that, politicians and parties need them the most during poll-time, but neglect them thereafter.

“When we wear those costumes and sing and dance on stage, while seeking votes, our woes disappear, but then the reel life ends and eventually we have to deal with real life” says Saraa.

On Kamal Haasan's birthday, makers to reveal title teaser of his next film

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan is holding an in-person meeting with his party district secretaries to chalk out a strategy for the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. This meeting comes after the party empowered Haasan to take decisions on the party’s alliance ahead of the crucial polls, where the ruling AIADMK faces a double anti-incumbency.

It is understood that the main agenda of the meeting is to work on establishing booth committees for all constituencies and to draw the plans for the actor’s state-wide campaign tour, besides working out the funding for the party.

In terms of their party’s stance, Haasan has been vocal against the ruling BJP and also the AIADMK government in the state. The actor has held regular meetings with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and also Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, besides Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and West Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee, The veteran act has been quite firmly stated that his ideology takes inspiration from the Left and also the Dravidian movement.

Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam(People’s Centre for Justice), which was launched in February 2018 had contested the 2019 Parliamentary polls in 39 seats across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as well as the by-polls to 22 Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu.

While the fledgling party had not bagged any seats on debut, they exceeded one lakh votes in few constituencies and were placed third in few others. The actor had expressed that the main obstacles for his party were widespread poverty and money distribution in the rural pockets, where they did not perform well, as opposed to urban areas where they secured more votes.

“In certain areas we have 12per cent vote share and our average vote share is nearly 5 per cent”, he said in 2019, expressing happiness over his party’s then decision to go alone, sans alignments with major parties. He said that analysts and advisors on their side foresaw a bright future for the fledgling party.

Kamal Haasan who will be celebrating his 66th birthday on November 7th had announced his 232nd film with director Lokesh Kanagaraj in September. Announcing the flick with Kanagaraj, Kamal had tweeted “Another journey begins”, with a picture that depicted a collage of the actor that was designed by arranging weapons that included assault rifles, pistols, bullets etc.. By the look of it, it seemed like an action-oriented film and the poster which sported a bright red background had the words “Once upon a time there lived a ghost” written in bold.

The veteran actor has been actively commenting on contemporary issues and taking potshots at the central and state governments over their functioning. In 2019, both Kamal Haasan and Rajinkanth had hinted that there was a possibility of them joining hands in their political journey. Hassan is also part of the Shankar-directed big-budget film Indian 2 and another project Thalaivan Irukkindran, which is said to be a sequel. Hassan is also busy with helming the fourth season of TV reality show Big boss.

He was last seen on the large screen in spy-thriller Vishwaroopam 2.

Kanagaraj had tweeted, “Aandavarukku Nandri” which translates to thank god, but is also a fancy way of thanking Kamal Haasan, as his fans regard him as ‘Aandavar’ (god). Lokesh has always been vocal about his admiration for the veteran actor who has entertained the masses for over six decades.

While fans are eager to catch a glimpse of their multi-talented icon on the silver screen, the time mentioned on the poster has also led to many questions being raised. Curiously, 2021 is also the crucial Assembly election year in Tamil Nadu. Currently, it is unclear if the poster is referring to a 2021 summer release or whether the unit would be commencing filming at that point in time. However, with Haasan’s party having contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, it is only natural that their two-and-a-half year old Political outfit ‘Makkal Needhi Maiam’ is expected to contest the elections.
