Kamal Haasan alleged that there was a contrast in the Covid-19 data being shared by the Tamil Nadu government, during a video conference with journalists. However, he refused to take many questions about his allegations, possible testing strategies or elaborate on his ‘Naame Theervu’ (We are the solution) initiative that is aimed at changing Chennai into a green Zone from its current Red Zone status.

In a video message, the actor-turned-politician said that there was no use in plate banging when migrant workers were starving to death and frontline Covid-19 fighters such as medical staff and police are battling it out. Adding that he was furious with rage, he said, “this is not the time for criticism or petty politics. We need strong and measured actions, Chennai is our healthcare capital, don’t let it become a Corona capital”.

The ‘Naame Theervu’ (we are the solution) campaign launched by him calls forth an army of volunteers(irrespective of their differences and political affiliation) to join in for activities ranging from donating to delivering relief materials to the needy. He was the first to register for his party’s campaign via a phone call to 6369811111.

A statement from his party says that “When each fo us saves one person, no one will be left behind. People are the solution to those who need medical assistance, safety equipment, sanitizers, food and rations. Sanitiser dispensers will be kept at places where people gather frequently, masks will be distributed as well. We need the participation and contribution of volunteers to take this forward.”

During the video conference with journalists, Haasan stated that some states such as Kerala, Karnataka and Odisha had seen partial victory in the battle against Corona while accepting that it seems like it (Corona wave) would keep recurring. He added that no government could fight corona alone and emphasized the need for people and volunteers to pitch in.

Adding that he was not saying this for politic mileage, the actor-turned-politician said, “There is no transparency in what they(State government) are saying, we are not able to see the numbers. The numbers shared by the government and the numbers on the street are contrasting. We are concerned about the Chennai situation and doing our best about it”.

However, the actor or his team did not respond to journalists questions on whether this campaign would be extended to Chennai’s neighbouring districts (Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu) which are also badly affected.

When questioned about comparing the Covid-19 situation in Tamil Nadu and Kerala(a relatively smaller state with lesser population and population density), there was no response.

WION asked if Kamal Haasan had discussed with his panel of medical experts regarding the possibility of Pooled testing and suggested any strategy in this regard to the government, there was no response and the video conference was ended stating a paucity of time. Questions sent to his PR team seeking a response also went unheeded.

Kamal Haasan writes open letter to Modi, 'save the livelihood of millions' amid COVID-19 outbreak

The Madras High Court has said that actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan can appear before the Central Crime branch Office, instead of the Indian 2 crane accident site at EVP Film City. He had approached the court for urgent relief, alleging harassment from the police. Cops had summoned 24 film crew members, including Haasan to appear at the ancient site on Wednesday morning, for a probe into the tragic crane accident that claimed three lives and injured 10 people.

Kamal had complained that the police were acting under political pressure, forcing him to re-enact the accident scene and that it was causing him mental trauma. He maintains that he had cooperated with the Police investigation for over three hours on March 3rd and that he wouldn’t be able to visit the accident spot, when he still hadn’t gotten over the tragedy and ensuing trauma.

The Police had mentioned that Kamal Haasan, director Shankar and 22 others were issued summons to appear at the accident spot, as they were eye-witnesses in this case. The Madras High Court has said that actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan can appear before the Central Crime branch Office, instead of the Indian 2 crane accident site at EVP Film City.

They also emphasized that Kamal Haasan could not be exempt because he was the lead actor in the film and that there wouldn’t be any law and order issues in having the actor appear on-location. Police have clarified that they were merely following procedure and did not harbor political motives. Kamal Haasan appears before Chennai Police over probe on crane crash on the sets of ‘Indian 2’ that killed 3

An old video of Tamil actress Rekha has surfaced online where the senior actress can be heard saying that that how she was not informed about a kiss that actor Kamal Haasan would plant on her lips in the climax scene of 1986 film 'Punnagai Mannan'.

The actress was 16 at that time and alleged that director K Balachander and Kamal Haasan had tricked her and shot an 'unplanned kiss' scene without her consent.

"I've said this a hundred times. They shot the scene without me knowing about it. People ask me the same question and I'm fed up of answering it," Rekha told The News Minute soon after her old interview went viral.

The actress though added that the now-famous kiss helped the film in totality -bringing out the right emotions needed for the story.
"The kiss didn't look ugly or aggressive on-screen. There was a need for it, but I was a very young girl and I didn't know about it. He (director K Balachander) said, 'Kamal, close your eyes! You remember what I told you, right?' and Kamal said that he did. Then we had to jump when he said 1, 2, 3... we kissed and then jumped. It was only when I watched it in theatres that I realised it had such a huge impact," she said.

Rekha had just completed class 10th when she shot the film and was assured that the said kiss would not be cleared by the Censor Board.

"They continued after that shot also, we had a location shift. Suresh Krissna and Vasanth were the associate directors, and I told them I wasn't informed about the kiss and that I wouldn't have agreed to it. But they told me to think of it as a big king kissing a small child. They told me it wouldn't be passed by the Censor. I asked them what the Censor was,"the actress added.

Rekha said while Kamal Haasan was aware that the kiss had happened without her consent, the actor never apologised to her. Neither did the veteran filmmaker.

The actress, though admits she never asked the actor-director duo for an apology. "Why would they apologise? The film was a superhit! I got many films after that, too, with Ramarajan and Ilaiyaraaja, like Namma Ooru Pattukaran. We were all so busy in those days, going from one schedule to another," Rekha recalled.

She said she wouldn't have given her consent to the scene had they asked her.

While the incident took place more than three decades ago, the interview has sparked controversy on social media as many have demanded actor Kamal Haasan to apologise to Rekha including singer Chinmayi Sripada who is an advocate of the #MeToo movement.

In a series of tweets, Chinmayi has stated that consent of women on film sets is often overlooked and not considered and that the practice needs to stop.

Tamil actress Rekha alleges Kamal Haasan, K Balachander had filmed kissing scene for 'Punnagai Mannan' without her consent

Actor Kamal Haasan has expressed disappointment and shame at the film industry’s inability to provide insurance and safety for technicians, after a tragic crane accident on the sets of his film ‘Indian 2’ claimed three lives and injured around ten others. Reports emerged late Wednesday night that an accident had occurred on sets of Kamal Haasan-starrer, 'Indian 2', which was being filmed by director Shankar at EVP Film city on the outskirts of Chennai.

The Production Company Lyca Productions had issued a message condoling the death of three of their technicians - Assistant Director Krishna, Art Assistant Chandran and Production Assistant Madhu.

Kamal Haasan had visited the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital to pay homage to his deceased colleagues. Speaking to the media, Haasan said, “I’m in this profession from my childhood, and this unfortunate accident goes on to show the lack of safety in our profession. This morning as I was speaking to my friends, we discussed that the cinema industry must take measures to prevent such accidents. It is really saddening that our cinema industry speaks highly about 100cr and 200cr club but can't provide safety for our workers. As an individual, this causes me great embarrassment and disappointment.”

The actor also announced that he was offering temporary assistance of 1 crore rupees each for the bereaved families. “This sum I have announced is not a solatium or compensation, it's only to help their families cope with the times ahead. It is more like a small token of help, but in the long run, we as an industry must ensure that there would be insurance during future shootings. This is not a request but a responsibility. Nowhere in India, there is safety compliance in any field. We are a high profile industry so when accidents happen it gets a high profile in the media. Actually the victims could be anybody, irrespective of rich or poor”, Haasan added.

The actor also recalled that he was in an accident three years ago, how difficult it was to recover. He pointed out that the families of two of the three deceased were from lesser fortunate backgrounds.

The veteran actor recollected how himself, actor Kajal Aggarwal and director Shankar too had a narrow escape. Recalling those harrowing moments, the veteran actor said, “Four seconds before the accident, the director and cameraman moved away from that spot. Kajal and I were under the tent which got crushed. Had I moved two inches away from my place, someone else would have been talking to you today and I could have been in the mortuary. There are accidents waiting to happen and we should see that they do not happen."

I have lost three colleagues and am grief stricken, but their families’ sorrow would be manyfold. As one among their family I Share the grief. Condolences.
A day after his party Makkal Needhi Maiam released a statement that they had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court against the Citizenship amendment Act 2019, actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan slammed the Centre and Tamil Nadu’s state government for having passed the bill.

Speaking to reporters at the MNM party office in Chennai, he said, “India’s backbones are its villages and our farmers are dying, there is a slowdown in the economy and prices of essential commodities are rising but the government’s ploy is to divide based on religion.
On the silence of various top personalities from the cinema industry that Haasan himself has contributed to for over 60 years, he said, “Most voices have been stifled and they have spread the fear.”

Kamal Haasan completes 60 years in films; grand celebrations planned

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan was the latest to join the chorus of politicians in Tamil Nadu to oppose the comments of Home Minister Amit Shah, who had spoken at a ‘Hindi Day’ event and said that Hindi should be India’s common and unifying language.

Following Amit Shah’s comments made at the Hindi day event, leaders of the DMK, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and NDA-ally Pattali Makkal Katchi, among others had expressed their disapproval.

In a video message, Kamal Haasan stated that a lot of kings had given up their kingdoms for the creation of India, but a lot of Indians and states vehemently opposed giving up their language, culture and traditions. “When India became a Constitutional republic in 1950, the Government promised the same to the people and asserted that no Shah or Sultan or Samrat can attempt to change it”.

Making a mention of the 2017 protests demanding the conduct of the bull-taming sport he said, “Jallikattu was just a protest, the battle for our language will be exponentially bigger than that. India or Tamil Nadu does not need or deserve such a battle.”

“Most of the Nation happily sings their National Anthem in Bengali with pride, and will continue to do so. The reason is the poet who wrote the National Anthem gave due respect to all languages and culture within the Anthem. And hence, it became our Anthem. Do not make an inclusive India into an exclusive one. All will suffer because of such short-sighted folly” he added.

Earlier, DMK President MK Stalin had also slammed the Home Minister’s comments, “The Prime Minister should clarify his stand, otherwise the DMK will get ready for another language war. This is India not ‘Hindia’. There is a threat to India’s unity after attempting to thrust Hindi in Railways, Postal jobs. DMK will not hesitate to unite states which stand to lose rights due to Hindi dominance”.
Lok Sabha election result 2019: Kamal Haasan's star power fails to lead his party to victory in Tamil Nadu

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan congratulated the BJP for its victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and thanked the people who voted for his party - the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) - in the Assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters at his party office here, Haasan said that their party was like a 15-month-old baby and appreciated how people voted for MNM's brand of honest politics.
Responding to questions on the massive victory of the BJP, Haasan said, "Its people's verdict, but not that of the people of Tamil Nadu - in reference to the BJP-led NDA winning only a single seat of the 38 seats in the state. It is their responsibility to ensure that they would work for the welfare of Tamil Nadu, and consider the state on equal footing with the ones that they have won."

Clarifying his party's stance on certain projects of the central government that faced opposition in Tamil Nadu, he said, "We are not against development, but we don't want such projects on fertile agricultural lands."

The main obstacles for our party was widespread poverty and money distribution in the rural pockets."

In some areas we secured 12 per cent vote share and our average vote share is nearly five per cent, Haasan added.

Expressing happiness over his party's decision to go alone without any alliance with major parties, Haasan said that analysts and advisors have foreseen a bright future for the fledgling party.

Lok Sabha elections: Superstar Kamal Haasan, daughter Shruti pose vote selfies

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan unveiled the manifesto of his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), on Monday. The document was meant for Coimbatore constituency, from where MNM candidate and party's vice president Dr Mahendran is contesting election.

While Haasan himself is not contesting in the upcoming polls, his party will contest all 40 Lok Sabha constituencies and the 18 vacant Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu. The party has been allotted the 'battery torch' symbol.

The manifesto titled 'Vision 2024' chalked out ambitious plans for the district consisted of categories such as industrial growth, water, infrastructure and connectivity, farmers, clean energy, green footprint, talent capital and civil society participation. It enlisted the scheme and plans that the party has envisioned for Coimbatore and also mentioned that most projects would be completed before 2022, while some would be completed by 2024.

Speaking to reporters at the event, Kamal Haasan responded to various issues ranging from the response to his party's campaign and the emerging scenario after the upcoming polls.

"In 60 years as an actor, people have showered so much love on me, when I go up close now I feel it much more, even in the smallest of villages." He also said that Tamil Nadu is on the cusp of a revolution as the circumstances have united angry people.

Making a mention of his party’s prospects, he said many more MPs from across India will join his party Dr Mahendran, who would emerge victorious from Coimbatore. On the possibility of a Third Front, Haasan said he believed in the emergence of a third front and that many leaders across the country were thinking of it.

Haasan's party MNM, which is a little over a year old is in an alliance with smaller parties such as the Republican Party of India and the Valarum Thamilagam Party.
