England pacer James Anderson revealed Jonny Bairstow was left annoyed after Virat Kohli's continuous sledging attempts against him during the recently-concluded fifth Test between India and England at Edgbaston. England thrashed India by 7 wickets in the rescheduled fifth Test to draw the 2-2 and deny the visitors a historic Test series win. Bairstow and Joe Root were the heroes with the bat for England as they slammed centuries apiece to help the hosts chase down the target of 378 runs comfortably in their second innings.

Bairstow, who slammed back-to-back hundreds in England's both innings, was involved in a heated exchange with Indian star Kohli on Day 3 of the Test match. The duo had an exchange in the middle before Kohli was seen gesturing Bairstow to shut down with a finger on his lips. Bairstow remained unfazed despite Kohli's sledging attempts and notched up a brilliant century.

Anderson revealed Kohli was sledging Bairstow a lot but it only worked in the favour of the England batter as it pumped him up and helped him improve his scoring rate. Anderson also recalled Bairstow's reaction in the dressing room at lunch after Kohli's sledging attempts against him.

'When will they learn to shut': James Anderson reveals how Bairstow reacted to Kohli's sledging in 5th Test

Virat Kohli couldn't do anything significant with the bat during India's recent loss versus England in the fifth and final rescheduled Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Kohli returned with scores of 11 and 20 as India lost the plot despite a sizeable 132-run lead to lose the contest after setting up a challenging 378-run target for the Ben Stokes-led hosts.

Jonny Bairstow slammed twin centuries in the match whereas Joe Root's 142 not out propelled the home side to a famous series-levelling seven-wicket win on Tuesday (July 05). The duo stitched an unbroken 269-run fourth-wicket stand in England's pursuit of 378 and ended India's hopes of winning their first-ever Test series on English soil since 2007. While Kohli failed with the bat, he made heads turn when he sledged Bairstow during England's first innings. Back then, he was trolled severely by social media users and some former cricketers also didn't like Kohli taking on Bairstow, which only led to the Englishman reaching triple-figure mark in a jiffy.

However, Kohli was recently lauded by England great David Lloyd after the Edgbaston Test. Lloyd admired Kohli's gesture towards centurions Bairstow-Root after they guided the team to a famous win on Day 5. "I thought the on-field scenes at the conclusion of the game were glorious, with India's players congratulating Root and Jonny Bairstow and recognising the epic job they had done," Lloyd wrote in his column for The Daily Mail.

"Special mention for Virat Kohli who at times plays the pantomime villain, but who had a special word with both players. I like that," he wrote.

'He plays pantomime villain but...' - England great lauds Virat Kohli's gesture towards Bairstow, Root

India missed a chance to completely bat England out of the fifth and final Test on Day 4, on Monday (July 04), as they were all-out for 245, setting up a challenging 378-run target. While the target was still a mammoth one, Ben Stokes-led England's newly aggressive approach with the bat was sure to test the Indian bowling line-up. At stumps on Day 4, England had their nose ahead being well-placed at 259-3.

An unbroken 150-run fourth-wicket stand between Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root set it up nicely for England before the hosts chased down the remaining 119 runs on Day 5 with the five-match series ending at 2-2. Courtest of this shocking defeat, despite a sizeable 132-run lead, India missed a huge opportunity to win their first-ever Test series on English soil since 2007 and return with a 3-1 scoreline. By virtue of this result, India also attained a new low by failing to defend a 350-plus total for the first time in a Test match.

That's the beauty of Test cricket, even if you have three good days. We fell short with the bat yesterday and that is where we let the opposition in to let the match slip away from us. We have drawn the series and both teams played very good cricket and it was a fair result. Pant takes his chances. He and Jaddu got us back into the game with their counter-attack. We were ahead in the game. He takes his chances, backs himself and very happy for him. Dravid is always there to guide us and back us. It was an honour to lead the team and a great experience."

Being asked to bat first, India were reeling at 98-5 before posting 416 riding on centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja. Edgbaston Test: India succumb to new low after England chase 378 as series ends at 2-2

India head coach Rahul Dravid said it was disappointing to lose the rescheduled 5th Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday (July 05) as the hosts thrashed India by 7 wickets to level the five-match series which was postponed last year 2-2. England chased down the target of 378 runs comfortably in their second innings with the help of unbeaten centuries from Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow to pull off the highest-ever run chase in Test cricket.

India were ahead in the all-important Test match for the first three days as they aimed to script a historic series win in England with a 2-1 lead in their bag from last year. However, England got the better of Jasprit Bumrah & Co., who struggled massively with the ball during England's second innings and managed to pick up only three wickets.

India have now lost their last three Test matches in a row overseas. They had suffered back-to-back defeats in the final two Tests against South Africa earlier this year and have now lost three in a row overseas. Dravid rued the missed opportunities in South Africa and said India have struggled to pick 20 wickets in a Test match over the last few months which is one of the major reasons behind the drop in performances.

"It's been disappointing for us. I mean we had a couple of opportunities in South Africa as well and here as well. I just think it's something we need to look at, something we need to probably work on," Dravid told reporters after India's 7-wicket loss at Edgbaston.

"We have been very good at that over the last few years, in terms of taking wickets and winning those Test matches. But, yeah, we haven't been able to do that over the last few months. It could be a variety of factors: it could be maybe we just need to maintain that intensity, maintain that level of fitness, or maintain that level of performance right through a Test match," he added.

The 5th Test between India and England was originally scheduled to be played in Old Trafford in Manchester last year but had to be postponed due to COVID-19. India woud perhaps have wanted to close out the series last year considering they were dominant throughout and almost had a series win in their pocket.

Dravid, who was not part of India's coaching staff back then with Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli still in charge, insisted situation of both teams were different during the series last year. However, he asserted he won't make any excuses for India's horrible show with the ball at Edgbaston.

"I don't want to make excuses. I wasn't part of the team then. India was on a roll at that stage. England were probably in a slightly different situation at that point of time. But they have come here on the back of three consecutive wins against New Zealand. We have had a long gap in between Test cricket, but no excuses," said Dravid.

'I don't want to make excuses': Rahul Dravid reacts to India's crushing defeat vs England in Edgbaston Test

Team India dominated the fifth and final Test versus England for most parts only to go down eventually by seven wickets as the five-match Test series, which started during the 2021 English summer, ended in a 2-2 stalemate on Tuesday (July 05) in Edgbaston, Birimingham.

Being asked to bat first, India were in a spot of bother at 98-5 before Rishabh Pant's 146 and Ravindra Jadeja's 104 propelled the Rohit Sharma-less team to 416 in the first innings. In reply, England managed only 284, despite Jonny Bairstow's century, to give a sizeable 132-run lead to the Indian team. India missed a trick by not completely batting England out of contest in their second essay, being dismissed for 245, but still setup a challenging 378-run target for the hosts to level the series.

An unbroken 269-run fourth-wicket stand between centurions Bairstow and Joe Root (142 not out) took their side past the finish line.

ENG vs IND, 5th Test: Where did India lose the plot despite a sizeable lead? Jasprit Bumrah explains

England thrashed India by seven wickets in the rescheduled fifth Test match at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday (July 05) to deny them a historic Test series win and end the five-match series level on 2-2. England pulled off their highest-ever run-chase in Test cricket to script history on Day 5 of the crucial Test match and also shattered a plethora of other records.

Asked to chase down a huge target of 378 runs in their second innings, England were far from favourites. However, they produced a remarkable batting performance and made the Indian bowling attack toil hard for wickets to register an emphatic win by seven wickets. Riding on centuries from Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow, England chased down the target without breaking a sweat.

India dominated the proceedings on the first three days as they went on to post a string total of 416 runs on the board in their first innings before skitting out the hosts for 284. India amassed a healthy lead of 132 runs and followed it up with a total of 245 in their second innings to hand England a tricky target of 378 runs to win the game.

England had never chased down more than 360 runs in Test cricket before but Bairstow (114 off 145 balls) and Root (142 off 173 balls) combined to take their team home comfortably. England broke a plethora of records with their dominant win as they managed to draw the five-match series 2-2.

Here is a look at some of the records created by England in the Edgbaston Test against India:

England recorded their highest-ever run-chase in Test cricket by gunning down the 378-run target against India on Tuesday. Their previous highest run-chase in Test cricket was 359 runs against Australia.

England script history in Edgbaston: A look at records broken by Stokes & Co. with emphatic win over India

Not many had given England a chance at the start of their second innings in the rescheduled fifth Test against India at Edgbaston in Birmingham as the hosts had a massive target of 378 runs in front of them to deny India a historic series win. The England batters were certainly up for the challenge and made a mockery of the Indian bowling attack to nail down the target inside just 76.4 overs and register an emphatic victory by 7 wickets.

Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow continued their purple patch at Edgbaston as they notched up a century apiece in England's second innings to help the hosts chase down 378 runs without breaking a sweat on Day 5 of the Test match. Asked to chase the huge total, England had started their second innings as far from favourites but a brilliant opening stand followed by terrific knocks from Root and Bairstow sealed a series-levelling win for them.

Openers Alex Lees (56) and Zak Crawley (46) took England off to a flying start in their second innings with a 107-run stand for the first wicket. India's stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah, who was leading the side in Rohit Sharma's absence, got the visitors back into the game by breaking their partnership at a crucial juncture.

Bumrah then got rid of Ollie Pope on a duck in quick succession before Lees was run-out leaving England reeling on 109/3. However, Root and Bairstow combined to put on a resilient stand and take England close to victory. After being dominated by India over the course of the first three days in the Test match, England stood just 119 runs away from victory at stumps on Day 3.

It was an incredible turnaround from the hosts as they went from being the underdogs at the start of their second innings to become the absolute favourite to win the game. On Day 5, Root and Bairstow continued from where they had left and went on to notch up their respective centuries. While Root finished unbeaten on 142 off just 173 balls, Bairstow scored 114 off 145 balls.

India dominated the proceedings right from Day 1 despite getting off to a poor start after being asked to bat first. India were struggling at 98/5 at one stage in their first innings before centurions Ravindra Jadeja (104) and Rishabh Pant (146) combined to help them fight back. Skipper Bumrah gave the finishing touches with a sensational cameo of 16-ball 31 to help India post 416 runs on the board.

Indian bowlers then produced an exceptional show with the ball during England's first innings to bundle them out for 284 runs despite Bairstow's terrific knock of 106 runs. India amassed a healthy lead of 132 runs heading into their second innings but the batters failed to capitalise.

Barring Cheteshwar Pujara (66) and Pant (57), all other Indian batters failed to get going as India could only manage 245 runs in their second innings to extend their lead to 377 runs to hand England a massive target. However, the total proved to be a cakewalk for the English batters at the end as they chased it down with seven wickets to spare to deny India a historic series win.

Root, Bairstow slam tons as England hammer India by 7 wickets in Edgbaston Test, draw series 2-2

Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow slammed unbeaten fifties to lead England`s mammoth chase of 378 against India on day four of rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston on Monday. At stumps, the hosts were 259/3 in 57 overs, needing just 119 on a sold-out final day to level the five-match series being played for the Pataudi Trophy.

On a day on which rain chose not to interrupt play, England made merry as Root and Bairstow went back to the dressing room after making 76 off 110 balls and 73 off 89 deliveries respectively. Before this, on a pitch that had variable bounce and some turn for spinners, England took out the last seven Indian wickets for 120 runs, with Ben Stokes adding three more scalps, to bowl the visitors out for 245 in 81.5 overs.

Then, the effect of the heavy roller on the pitch was apparent by the terrific opening stand of 107 between Alex Lees (56) and Zak Crawley (46), before a ball change after 20.5 overs fetched India three wickets in as many overs. But Root and Bairstow`s unconquered stand of 150 meant the day belonged to the hosts.

India struck on the very first ball after tea as Bumrah enticed Ollie Pope to poke at a back-of-the-length ball coming in, which the batter did. But the ball held its line and took Pope`s outer edge behind to Pant, departing without troubling the scorers.

In the next over, Lees inside-edged off Ravindra Jadeja into the leg-side and had no idea where the ball had gone. With Root already running from the non-striker`s end, Lees ran belatedly and was run out easily at the non-striker`s end.

Bairstow got off the mark with a boundary through back-foot punch off Jadeja while Root survived lbw appeals off Jadeja and Shami as India lost two reviews in as many overs. The shift in gears came from the 37th over when Root reverse-swept and paddled Jadeja for a brace of boundaries.

Bairstow had a life at 14 when an outside edge off his blade burst through Hanuma Vihari`s hands at the second slip, with the ball flying towards the boundary rope. That set the tone for the counterattack from the duo - Root bringing the sweep and whips to reach his half-century in 71 balls.

Bairstow, on the other hand, found the gaps for boundaries through flicks, pulls and slices to reach his fifty with a brace through his square leg. He got another life at 39 when a faint edge on the flick didn`t stick into the gloves of a diving Pant.

After reaching his fifty, Bairstow carved Shami through backward point for a boundary before playing a fierce hook off Siraj for a six over fine leg to keep England in the hunt of chasing their highest successful score in Test cricket.

Earlier, Rishabh Pant followed up his 146 in the first innings with 57 while Cheteshwar Pujara notched up 66 in India`s second innings score of 245. Pujara added 16 more to his overnight total of 50 before cutting straight to the backward point in Stuart Broad`s first over.

A controlled Pant reached his fifty with a delicate flick through the fine leg, becoming just the second Indian wicketkeeper after Farokh Engineer to get a century and fifty in the same Test. Shreyas Iyer, after hitting three boundaries, fell to the short ball again in the match, pulling straight to mid-wicket off Potts.

Pant welcomed Jack Leach with a reverse sweep behind fine leg for a boundary despite falling on the ground. He tried to unsettle Leach`s line and length with another reverse sweep, but could only glove behind to first slip, finishing the match with 203 runs across both innings.

Potts rattled Shardul Thakur with short balls, even striking him on side of the helmet once. In his next over, Thakur tried to take on the short ball with a pull but the top-edge flew to deep fine leg. Stokes then bounced out Shami before getting one to jag in sharply and force Jadeja to chop onto his stumps. He ended India`s innings by having Bumrah hole out to fine leg immediately after being hit for a six.

In the pursuit of 378, Lees and Crawley hit two boundaries each to take England to 43 runs in eight overs. India`s introduction of Jadeja had little effect on England as Lees danced down the pitch to drive through mid-off before nailing the gap through point to make it two boundaries off his opening over.

Lees continued to be eye-catchy in his stroke play, reaching his fifty in just 44 balls with a copybook style back-foot punch through cover-point off Siraj. Crawley, who survived a caught behind appeal off Jadeja, brought out some exquisite drives, flicks and started to find gaps crisply for fun. The left-right duo brought up England`s century in 19.5 overs, marking the first-century stand between the duo.

For India, who got to change the ball after 20.5 overs, Bumrah brought himself on in the 22nd over and got success on the fourth ball as Crawley`s off-stump was castled, with the batter offering no shot to an in-ducker, providing India a vital breakthrough an over before tea.

Post tea, India would find two more wickets before Root and Bairstow joined forces to bring England on the path of their fourth straight successful chase in as many Tests.

India vs England, 5th Test: Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow lead mammoth chase

After four pulsating days of cricket in Edgbaston, Birmingham, India and England will gear up for the five-match Test series' final day on Tuesday (July 05). In a series which has lasted for a year, with the final Test being rescheduled by more than ten months, both sides still have all to play for with the scoreline 2-1 in favour of India.

While India will turn up on the 22-yard cricket pitch with only 119 more runs to defend, in defence of 378, Ben Stokes & Co. will start as favourites being well-placed at 259-3 courtesy of an unbroken 150-run fourth-wicket stand between half-centurions Joe Root (76*) and Jonny Bairstow (72 not out). Here's how the weather is expected to hold up for the final day's play:

According to the AccuWeather, there's about only 4 percent chance of rain at Edgbaston during the day time. The sky would, however, be partly covered by clouds. The chances of rain are still fairly slim. Hence, if India are to win the contest, Jasprit Bumrah & Co. will have to buckle up and be at their very best to trigger a collapse of the English batting line-up on Day 5

India have dominated the final Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham. After posting 416, they managed to dismiss England for 284. Bumrah & Co., however, couldn't bat England out of contest after being dismissed for 245, setting up a challenging 378-run target. While it remains a big score, the visitors missed the chance of posting a target above 450 and apply more presure on the English batting line-up. Will Stokes-led hosts resorting to an aggressive approach with the bat nowadays, they have given India a lot to think about before the final day's play.

England vs India, 5th Test: How will the weather hold up on Day 5 of series finale in Edgbaston?

Day 3 of the fifth and final Test between India and England started with a fiesty contest between Jonny Bairstow and Virat Kohli. Batting on 13* (61), Bairstow said something to the former Indian captain when the players were exchanging ends between overs. Kohli, not someone to keep shut, was in no mood to listen to Bairstow and gave it back to the Englishman, saying 'shut up, just stand and bat'.

Despite being at the receiving end from Kohli, the in-form Bairstow exploded after the verbal duel and smashed his next 87 runs off 58 balls to reach triple figures in a jiffy before falling for a 140-ball 106 in England's first innings (284), giving India a healthy 132-run lead. Speaking after Day 3's proceedings, Bairstow opened up on the war of words between Kohli and him and played down the battle.

"We've played against each other for a solid 10 years now, so it's a bit of craic. We're fiercely competitive on the field and that's what it's about. We're playing Test cricket, we're two competitors, that's why we play the game and that's what brings the best out of us. You want to be out there, you want to do your best and you want to win. Whatever it takes, you want to get your team over the line," Bairstow said at the press conference, terming the exchange of words as part and parcel of the game.

After stumps on Sunday, India are in a commanding position; being 125-3 with an overall lead of 257 runs with Cheteshwar Pujara (50*) and Rishabh Pant (30*) in the middle. Hence, Bairstow said England will do anything to ensure India do not run away with the game on the penultimate day. "If we nick a couple of them in the morning (on Day 4), and Stokes mentioned it at the toss, we'll have a chase and that's exactly what we'll be trying to do. We won't be shutting up shop, that's for sure," Bairstow was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

After losing Kohli for 20 (40), India will look to post anything over 250 in their second essay to give a challenging total to Ben Stokes & Co. in a bid to win their first-ever Test series on English soil since 2007.

'We won't be shutting up...' - Jonny Bairstow opens up on verbal duel with Virat Kohli in Edgbaston Test

Virat Kohli sledged Jonny Bairstow and tried to get on his nerves during the first session on Day 3 of the ongoing rescheduled fifth Test between India and England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. England were under massive pressure at the start of Day 3 as they trailed by 322 runs after India dominated the proceedings with the bat and the ball on the first two days of the Test match.

Bairstow, who resumed the batting with captain Ben Stokes on Day 3, continued to play the Indian bowlers cautiously in the first session. Kohli tried to unsettle the English batter by sledging him on the pitch while he was batting. Things got heated up between the duo as they were involved in an argument on the field and had to be eventually separated out by the on-field umpires.

The heated exchange between the duo took place after the first ball of the 31st over bowled by senior India pacer Mohammed Shami. Kohli approached Bairstow at the non-striker's end and had some harsh words for the English batter. “Shut up. Just stand and bat," Kohli was caught telling Bairstow on the stump mic during a heated exchange between the two.

The video of Kohli sledging Bairstow went viral on social media instantly leading to mixed reactions from fans. Later, as Kohli walked back to his fielding position, Bairstow was seen signalling Kohli to keep blabbering while the Indian superstar put a finger on his lips asking Bairstow to stay quiet.

However, Kohli's sledging had little impact on Bairstow, who turned out to be England's saviour.

England romped past New Zealand in the third and final Test on Monday evening (June 27) to inflict a series whitewash over the World Test champions. Kane Williamson & Co. competed in every game and were even ahead by some distance on several occasions during the series, however, they failed to seize the momentum and make the most of it as Ben Stokes-led England's gung-ho approach resulted in a 3-0 win for the hosts.

Resuming Day 5 at 183-5 in pursuit of 296, after a delayed start due to rain, England lost Ollie Pope for 82 before Joe Root's unbeaten 86 and Jonny Bairstow's electrifying 71 not out, off 44 deliveries, propelled the home side to a seven-wicket win with over a session's play to spare. Following the win, the Kiwi players shook hands with the two English batters and former skipper Root won hearts with his fitting gesture towards NZ's star batter Daryl Mitchell. Here's the video:

Mitchell was the best batter throughout the series, who bailed the Black Caps out of crisis in each and every Test and slammed three tons on the trot. He amassed 538 runs (most by any) in three Tests, comprising three hundreds and two half-centuries, and was his side's Player-of-the-Series. Thus, Root -- who also was in fine form and ended with 396 runs with two tons -- lauded him via his fitting gesture and won hearts.

After the series win, Stokes told at the post-match presentation, "It's gone really well. To walk away with 3-0 series win over the best team in the world is a special start. When I took over this job, it was about changing the mindset of the guys towards Test cricket, was about having fun. Huge amount of credit to Brendon (McCullum) and the backroom staff. Trent Bridge was fantastic. Being 55/6 and to do what we did the manner we did (here), that was something special. Pottsy has taken it like fish to water. This game, he's been incredible. Broady, even at 36, bowled 50 overs this week. I wanted to push the lads to see what they were capable of. Fantastic to see Leachy taking 10 wickets. I have never seen a happier dressing room for an individual's success. Different opposition (India), we still have a series to draw. We'll come out with exactly the same mindset."

Updated ICC World Test Championship points table after Ben Stokes' England whitewash New Zealand

England's gung-ho approach was on display on the final day of the three-match Test series versus New Zealand in the Headingley encounter. Resuming their 296-run chase on Day 5, on Monday (June 27), Ben Stokes-led hosts defeated Kiwis by seven wickets to inflict a series whitewash over the World Test champions.

Ending Day 4 at 183-2, England was oncourse for a 3-0 scoreline with a settled Joe Root and Ollie Pope in the middle. The duo got together with the score of 51 for 2 after NZ set up another challenging target in the series. The script remained the same for England as they recovered after a poor start and continued their relentless attack to find the gaps and keep the scoreboard ticking. Thus, the unbroken third-wicket stand was expected to guide hosts to a comfortable win.

After a delayed start to Day 5, due to rain, England lost Pope for 82. Despite losing the right-hander as he was nearing a triple-figure score, Root got Jonny Bairstow's company as the two found the gaps with ease and the runs kept flowing in at regular intervals. Bairstow (71 not out off 44 deliveries) slammed the second-fastest fifty by an Englishman in whites and Root remained unbeaten on 86 as England completed a whitewash.

Talking about the contest, Kiwis had opted to bat first and rode on Daryl Mitchell's third consecutive ton of the series to post 329. With England reduced to 55 for 6, the visitors fancied their chances of attaining a healthy lead but Bairstow's stroke-filled 162, off 157 balls, and all-rounder Craig Overton's 97 propelled the Three Lions to 360 all-out, leading by 31 runs.

Tom Latham's 76, captain Kane Williamson's 48, Mitchell's 56 and keeper-batter Tom Blundell's 88 helped NZ post 326 in their second essay, setting up a challenging 296-run target. Despite having a competitive total to defend, the Black Caps faltered yet again and failed to run through England's middle and lower order, as was the case in the opening two games.

Lack of runs from their top-order and having no answers to England's all-out approach with the bat resulted in Kiwis' downfall in each and every game, despite them being on top on various occasions. Stokes & Co. will now gear up for the rescheduled fifth and final Test versus India, in Edgbaston, which commences on July 01. The Brendon McCullum-Stokes pair will be eager to prevent India from winning the incomplete five-match series, where they have conceded an unassailable lead to Rohit Sharma & Co., and end it with a 2-2 scoreline.

England were chasing a challenging total of 299 on the final day to win in Nottingham after dismissing the visitors for 284 in their second innings. But Bairstow, who came in following the dismissal of in-form Joe Root, bludgeoned 136 runs off just 92 balls, hitting the second-fastest century in England's Test history, off just 77 balls.

Jonny Bairstow slams 2nd-fastest ton by Englishman as ENG chase down 299 vs NZ, win 2nd Test & series

Match 60 of the IPL 2022 edition saw the three-time runners-up Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) face the Mayank Agarwal-led Punjab Kings (PBKS). While a win would've taken RCB closer to the playoffs, they lost by a whopping 54-run margin in pursuit of a mammoth 210 as Punjab remain alive in the playoffs race.

Winning the toss, Fafd & Co. invited the Punjab XI to bat first at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. The Punjab outfit were off to an electrifying start as Englishman Jonny Bairstow went bonkers from the word go. Shikhar Dhawan also contributed as the duo's 50-run stand came in no time. Josh Hazlewood, RCB's premier pacer this season, was hammered left, right and center as Punjab made full use of the powerplay overs. While Bhanuka Rajapaksha fell early, Bairstow was joined by Liam Livingstone, who anchored the innings after the former's dismissal for an impressive 29-ball 66. The middle overs have been the Achilles heel for Punjab as their batters tend to slow down and the same was witnessed Friday evening (May 13) but Livingstone's well-crafted 42-ball 70 propelled the one-time runners-up to 209/9 despite Wanindu Hasaranga's 2 for 15 and Harshal Patel's 4 for 34.

In reply, RCB were never in the run-chase. Virat Kohli came out to bat with a positive intent in a bid to move past his sluggish form. While he got a start, he soon perished off Kagiso Rabada's well-executed short-pitched delivery. Faf couldn't trouble the scorers whereas none apart from Rajat Patidar and Glenn Maxwell took Punjab bowlers to the cleaners. The duo's departure sealed the contest in favour of an inconsistent Punjab as Rabada's 3 for 21 and two scalps each from Rishi Dhawan-Rahul Chahar took Mayank & Co. to an easy win to stay alive in the playoffs race. They now have 12 points from an equal number of encounters with a healthy NRR (+0.023) as they move up to the sixth position.

IPL 2022: Jonny Bairstow to debut? Punjab Kings predicted XI against Gujarat Titans

England captain Joe Root is facing the heat from all corners after his side's 1-0 defeat in the recently-concluded Test series against West Indies. After the first two Tests of the series ended in a draw, West Indies thrashed England by ten wickets in the final third encounter to clinch the series 1-0.

Kyle Mayers delivered a stellar performance with the ball as he bagged a five-wicket haul to run through the England batting line-up in their second innings and bundle them out for a paltry 120. West Indies chased down the target of 29 runs without breaking a sweat and won the Test match comprehensively to claim the series.

It was yet another disappointing performance from England in the longest format after their 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Australia in the Ashes 2021-22 earlier this year. Following England's 1-0 loss to West Indies, there have been calls for Root's sacking as the Test captain of the side.

The likes of former England captain Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton among others want Root to step down from his post and make way for a fresh change in the leadership role. Here we take a look at three England stars who can replace Root as the next Test captain of the team:

1) Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes is seen as the leading contender to replace Joe Root as the new Test captain of England. One of the best all-rounders in the world at present, Stokes has been remarkably consistent for the side across formats over the last few years. The star all-rounder led an inexperienced and young England side in an ODI series against Pakistan last year and inspired the side to a 2-1 win.

Stokes is one of the most experienced players in the current England Test squad with 79 matches to his name. Stokes has amassed over 5,000 runs and scalped 174 wickets in his Test career so far and can be an ideal candidate to lead the team going forward.

2) Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler might not have been a regular for England in Tests recently but is part of the team's leadership group across formats. Buttler is one of the best attacking batters as far as white-ball cricket is concerned but is also equally good in red-ball cricket. He is also one of the senior-most members in the England Test squad and can be handed over the responsibility to lead the team in the longest format.

Buttler, who was dropped from the squad for the West Indies Test series, has played 57 Tests in his career so far. He has amassed 2907 runs at an average of over 31 in the longest format.

3) Jonny Bairstow

England's Test side has been undergoing a transition for quite a while now with no set openers and a lack of firepower in the middle-order. Despite England's struggles in the whites, Jonny Bairstow has been one of the better performers for the team.

A technically sound batter who has been equally good across all formats, Bairstow has already played 83 Tests for his country and has amassed 4801 runs at an average of over 34, including 8 hundreds and 22 fifties. He can also be one of the contenders to take over captaincy if Root is sacked from his position in Tests.

Quinton de Kock to David Warner: Top 5 steals of IPL 2022 mega auction

The IPL 2022 mega auction was an enthralling two-day affair, which was held in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. As many as 590 players went under the hammer in the mega auction, which was held after four years. At the end of the two-day auction, all the ten IPL franchises have added quite a lot of big names to their respective squads before the IPL 2022 edition, which gets underway in late March.

Talking about the Punjab Kings (PBKS), they retained only opener Mayank Agarwal and pacer Arshdeep Singh before heading into the mega auction, with INR 720 million in their purse. As a result of having the highest purse before the auction, the PBKS think-tank went all-out and roped in some big players and relatively experienced as well as uncapped cricketers to the squad.

Along with picking Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Kagiso Rabada, Liam Livingstone, Rahul Chahar, Shahrukh Khan, etc. PBKS also roped in all-rounder Benny Howell. The English all-rounder is now the first-ever French-born cricketer to play the IPL.

Here's all you need to know about Howell

Howell entered the auction pool at a base price of INR 4 million (INR 40 lakhs). The French-born player is a right-handed batsman who bowls right-arm medium-fast. The 33-year-old is an experienced T20 cricketer. He has domestically represented the Hampshire County Cricket Club as well as the Gloucestershire team. In addition, he has been a part of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), playing for the Rangpur Riders for three seasons.

In the BPL, he has played alongside several big T20 players such as AB De Villiers, Ravi Bopara, Chris Gayle, Alex Hales, and Rilee Rossouw.

Howell, thus, is an interesting addition to PBKS' all-round department, also featuring Odean Smith, Harpreet Brar and the likes.

IPL 2022: Who is PBKS's Benny Howell? First French-born cricketer to feature in India's cash-rich league

All eyes are now on the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 mega auction, which is set to take place on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. While the two new IPL franchises -- Lucknow Super Giants and Team Ahmedabad -- will look to build their team from scratch, the other eight teams will revamp after releasing some of their marquee players.

Prior to the mega auction proceedings, which will be held in Bengaluru, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra shared his thoughts and made a bold claim while predicting the 'most expensive opener'. The likes of David Warner, Jonny Bairstow, Shikhar Dhawan, Quinton de Kock, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, etc. will go under the hammer. Chopra believes Ishan will earn a whopping amount in the forthcoming two-day auction affair.

"In my opinion, Ishan Kishan will be the most expensive opener at the IPL 2022 Auction. He could actually be the most expensive player, one out of him or Shreyas Iyer could be the most expensive. I won't be surprised if it is Ishan Kishan," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

He further stressed on the role of the openers and said, "The openers make or break the game. They have the ability because they have a lot of time. The problem in T20 is that you don't have time, it gets over very quickly. In such a case if you are an opener, you can decide the tempo of the match. KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Quinton de Kock, Shikhar Dhawan - you have seen a lot of players like that."

It will be interesting to see if Ishan goes for big in the auction or not. In IPL 2020, the then Mumbai Indians (MI) keeper-batter Ishan had amassed 516 runs at a strike-rate of 145.76 with four half-centuries. While he didn't have a great run in IPL 2021, he is still expected to attract big money for his power-hitting and fearless style of play.

Chopra further also stated that while Bairstow and Warner will also fetch big amounts, he named Quinton de Kock as the most expensive opener among foreign players. "Ishan Kishan, Devdutt Padikkal, Quinton de Kock - I am saying the most expensive overseas opener, David Warner, Chris Lynn, Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow - a lot of money is going to be spent. Ambati Rayudu can open, Shikhar Dhawan, Robin Uthappa, Faf du Plessis - there are a lot of openers who will present themselves as options," he concluded.

Not Warner or Dhawan! Chopra predicts Indian youngster as 'most expensive opener' in IPL 2022 auction

A staggering 1214 players have registered for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega player auction which is all set to take place in Bengaluru next month. Not eight but ten teams will be part of the auction process this time around after the inclusion of two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad for the next edition of the tournament. All ten teams will be aiming to build strong squads almost from scratch ahead of the new season.

While the existing eight teams had the option of retaining a maximum of four players each, the two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad were allowed to pick three players each from the pool of non-retained ones. A number of top players are still in the fray to be picked by the ten teams after entering the mega auction. England batter Jonny Bairstow said it would have been nice if the supporters who abused him were still there after the stumps at Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday.

Three men were ejected from the stadium with no charges laid after the English pair of Ben Stokes and Bairstow were subjected to verbal barbs during the day three`s tea break of the ongoing 4th Ashes Test against Australia.

In the footage obtained by The Age and the Herald from a witness show the pair being ridiculed for their body shape by at least one fan as they headed up the steps to the dressing room in the Members Pavilion.

"Stokes, you`re fat," a fan said. "Take your jumper off, Bairstow, lose some weight Bairstow," the England batter was told.

Bairstow fired back with "Pal, that`s right just turn around and walk away," before three people were ejected from SCG.On day three, Bairstow brought up England`s first century of the series, though will have work to do tomorrow, batting with the tail to close the 158-run first-innings deficit. Ben Stokes scored 66 as the tourists will resume on 258/7 on day four.

Asked about his earlier exchange of verbals with a spectator, Bairstow after the day`s play replied: "It was a bit of bad-mouthing. It`s not needed. We`re out there trying to do our jobs, people are there enjoying the cricket. Unfortunately, sometimes people overstep the mark."

All players arriving in Dubai now have to do a six-day quarantine and that could be the reason behind Bairstow and Malan pulling out.

A BCCI official told PTI that Bairstow and Malan the players won't be part of the IPL resuming September 19. The Guardian reported on Woakes' unavailability.

"They won't be boarding the flight to UAE. One of the reasons for their pull out is the six-day quarantine which they didn't need to do earlier," said the official.

While Bairstow is a regular in the Sunrisers line-up, world number one T20 batsman Malan made his IPL debut with Kings earlier this year. Aiden Markram has been named his replacement.
