Thus, the home side lost by 43 runs to concede a 2-0 lead. While Stokes' majestic knock made heads turn, Bairstow's dismissal also led to varied opinions in the cricketing fraternity and social media platforms. <p>The England pace bowler kept up his barrage as he exchanged angry words with Australian fielders and mockingly tapped his bat in his crease after each delivery to ensure he didn't depart the same way as Bairstow.</p>

<p>A bitter row about the 'spirit of cricket' was underway, with furious fans chanting "cheats" and England's players clearly angry Australia did not withdraw their appeal on grounds of fair play.</p>

<h2><strong>Verbally abused</strong></h2>

<p>Members in the Lord's Pavilion, the most prestigious stand in the stadium, confronted the Australia team as they walked through the historic Long Room to get to their dressing room at lunch.</p>

<p>Australia batsmen David Warner and Usman Khawaja were seen stopping to speak to members who were booing before stewards stepped in to usher the players away.</p>

<p>"Australian management has requested the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) investigate several incidents involving spectators in the members area during lunch on day five of the Lord's Test," a Cricket Australia spokesman said.</p>

<p>"It is alleged players and staff from the Australian team were verbally abused, with some being physically contacted, as they made their way to lunch through the members area."</p>

<p>Apologising for the incident, the MCC said: "After this morning's play, emotions were running high, and words were unfortunately exchanged with some of the Australian team, by a small number of Members.</p>

<p>"We have unreservedly apologised to the Australian Team and will deal with any Member who has not maintained the standard we expect through our disciplinary processes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It was not necessary to eject anyone from the ground and I am pleased to say that there was no repeat of this as the players resumed the field for this afternoon's session."</p>

<p>Relations between the two sides were already fraught with the Australians left fuming on Saturday when Mitchell Starc thought he had caught opener Ben Duckett.</p>

<p>Starc held a low catch only to ground the ball while still sliding on the turf.</p>

<p>Under cricket's laws, a catch is only completed when the fielder has "complete control over the ball and his/her own movement" and cannot touch the ground before then if a dismissal is to be completed.</p>

<p>The on-field umpires referred the decision to Erasmus, with the TV official ruling in Duckett's favour.</p>

<p>The Australians may rue the manner of Bairstow's dismissal as it provoked England captain Ben Stokes.</p>

<p>He went on the rampage, moving to 150 in the second session, as England bid for a Lord's record run chase of 371 to win.</p>

I've kept over here before: it's not the easiest place to keep, and when the ball is spitting and bouncing out of the rough, it can be quite difficult - and when you've got to stand a little bit closer on a wicket which is a bit slower and can hurry [you] a little bit, there is a risk that… those sharp edges can be a little bit more difficult," McCullum said.</p>

<p>Considering Bairstow had little time to get into the game-ready mode, McCullum feels Jonny was good behind the wicket throughout, and with passing matches, he will find his rhythm. Brendon said Bairstow is a real weapon at number seven.</p>

<p>"I actually thought Jonny kept really well, right throughout," McCullum added. "If you look at the way he progressed throughout the game as well, I think he found a natural rhythm, especially today [Tuesday], and I thought he did a really good job. And we know what he offers with the bat. Him coming in at No. 7 is a real weapon for us as well, so I think he'll be better for the run,” McCullum added.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, with the score line reading 0-1, England will now have to pull up their socks and see Lord’s as a chance to make it even. With reports of seamer Mark Wood likely to get a chance in the playing XI in the second Test, England will fancy their chances of going ahead with the Bazball approach.</p>

<p>With Bairstow now attaining full fitness ahead of the home summer, his selection over Foakes for the Ireland Test, with one eye on the Ashes, looks like the right decision for&nbsp;Atherton, who believes Bairstow has earned an immediate place in the side.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I think it is the right call, and I think that is the minority view from testing the water on social media," said Atherton on Sky Sports. "The problem for wicketkeepers is only one person can do the job, and Foakes, of course, is an outstanding wicketkeeper, and he has done pretty well for England.</p>

<p>"But Jonny Bairstow, the way that he played last summer, Brendon McCullum had said that once he is fit, he is going to get back into the team," the ex-captain added.</p>

<p><strong>Jonny has proved himself as a keeper before - Atherton</strong></p>

<p>Atherton added Bairstow proved himself as the gloveman over the years as he had kept wickets in 49 Tests.<br />

<p>Jonny admitted that he feared his career is over and that he won't be able to walk or even play cricket.</p>

<p>"You wonder whether or not you'll be able to walk again, jog again, run again, play cricket again," Bairstow said. "Absolutely, those things do go through your mind.</p>

<p>"It depends how long you think about them. There are many different things, until you get back to playing, well… you wonder, is it going to feel the same?" he added.</p>

<h2><strong>Jonny can't wait to keep wickets during home summer</strong></h2>

<p>While he admits being limping despite getting clearance from the medical team to go about his business, Bairstow said keeping shouldn't be a worry and having kept wickets for over 100 overs for Yorkshire, he is confident of pulling it off for six Tests ahead.</p>

<p>"I don't think it's different to fielding - when you're sprinting, changing direction," Bairstow said of keeping wicket. "You're squatting at the stumps and moving laterally, but you're not running at 25ks to the boundary. So, it's a different kind of fitness - the old legs and glutes are a bit stiff after that first day in the dirt, but it's part and parcel of it.</p>

<p>"That first second XI game (against Nottinghamshire before his return to 1st XI cricket), I kept 100 overs in the game. The last two Champo games - it's been building nicely. A day off, train, train, train. It's been back-to-back, and there hasn't been any reaction. If it swelled up, you know there's something wrong. So it's positive," Bairstow added, as quoted in ESPNcricinfo.</p>

<p>Having kept wickets in the past across formats, Bairstow is not new to this role and ahead of the all-important assignment in Ashes, he is happy to take care of the glove work behind the wickets.</p>

<p>"I'm excited. It's going to be a new challenge again because it is obviously something I've done quite a bit, but then there are periods when you don't do it as much because you're playing as a batter. Or playing white-ball cricket or whatever. It is an exciting challenge that awaits."</p>

Jonny Bairstow set to return from leg injury, to play for Yorkshire second XI this week

<p>IPL franchise Punjab Kings have announced that star-English batter Jonny Bairstow is ruled out of the upcoming season owing to a freak injury he suffered while playing golf with his friends in Yorkshire last year. They have replaced the England international with an uncapped Australian batter Matthew Short, who made headlines in BBL this year for registering 458 runs (second-highest) at an average of 35.23 and a strike rate of 144.47.</p>

<p>Punjab via BCCI was awaiting the latest fitness status of Bairstow from the ECB after the right-handed batter had resumed training in late February. As per the latest reports, Jonny returned to the nets in the past week and is likely to feature in Division two of the County Championship which usually starts in May. Considering this, PBKS announced his replacement in this video posted on their social media handle.</p>

<p>England batter Jonny Bairstow has provided an update on his recovery after undergoing surgery following a freak injury he suffered earlier this year. Bairstow also went on to reveal the extent of his injury, which ended his hopes of playing in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia this month.</p>

<p>The England batter had suffered a freak injury while playing golf which ruled him out of the T20 World Cup. He revealed he had a broken fibula in three places and also dislocated his ankle. Bairstow needed to undergo surgery and is currently on the path of recovery, three weeks since the operation.</p>

<p>"Hello everyoneI am just writing this to give you all an update on my injury and progress. The actual injury was as such a broken fibula in 3 places which required a plate, I dislocated my ankle which in turn meant I did my syndesmosis joint and lateral ligament along with a couple more bits. All in all I have done a proper job on it," Bairstow wrote in a post on Instagram while sharing pictures of his injured leg.</p>

<p>Bairstow said the operation went well but it will be too early to predict when can he return to action again. The England batter was in brilliant form with the bat before the freak injury forced him out of action. He has been one of England's best performers in white-ball cricket and his absence will be felt at the T20 World Cup in Australia.</p>

<p>Bairstow said he is currently only focused on getting back on his two feet again before he can think of returning to cricket. The England batter said he is unlikely to play any cricket in the remainder of 2022 and will think about making his comeback only in 2023 after recovering fully.</p>
