A German-born Israeli woman who was captured by Hamas terrorists and paraded on the streets following the October 7 attacks was found dead, the Israeli government announced on Monday (Oct 30).

Shani Louk, 23, was captured from the Supernova music festival in southern Israel near the Gaza border—from where the militant organisation launched their all-front attack.

The victim’s mother Ricarda Louk told the German media that she was informed of Shani’s death by the Israeli military, who had taken a DNA sample from part of a skull bone. Her body is yet to be found.

However, it is not clear from the reports where or how the fragment of her skull was discovered.

Later, Israeli President Isaac Herzog&nbsp;told the German newspaper Bild that she was in fact "beheaded" by the terrorists.

"I am truly sorry to report that we have now received news that Shani Nicole Louk has been confirmed murdered and dead," Herzog&nbsp;was quoted as saying.

“Her skull was found. This means that these barbaric, sadistic animals simply chopped off her head as they attacked, tortured and killed Israelis," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Hamas horrors&nbsp;</h2>

Shani’s sister Adi later took to the social media platform Instagram to share the news of her sister’s death.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the death of my sister," she said.

German newspaper Bild reported that Israeli President Isaac Herzog had also confirmed Louk's death.

More than 260 people were killed at the festival when gunmen opened fire, sending terrified partygoers to run for cover through the desert.

Hours after the attack, several clips began appearing on social media, showing the body of a young woman being paraded through the streets in the back of a truck, which was surrounded by armed fighters, while others yelled "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest).

Even though the woman was lying face down, Louk’s family were able to identify her from her dreadlocks and distinctive tattoos.

<h2>At least she didn't suffer</h2>

Initially, Lok’s mother argued that her daughter may be alive, contrary to the speculations floating around her death.

"We were sent a video in which I could clearly see our daughter unconscious in the car with the Palestinians and them driving around the Gaza Strip," Ricarda Louk said in an appeal for information posted online.

On Monday, while speaking to the German TV news channel RTL/ntv, Ricarda said she now assumed her daughter had been dead since 7 October and may have been shot in the head during the Hamas attack.

"At least she [Shani] didn't suffer," she said, adding that it was good to have certainty.

German outlet reported that Shani was trying to flee when she was captured by Hamas, who later took her into Gaza, and assaulted her.

The United States has reportedly warned Tel Aviv that it would not send American-made rifles after the Israeli national security minister was seen handing out such guns to civilians amidst the war with the Hamas terrorist group.

The row erupted after images shared by minister Itamar Ben-Gvir showed him distributing rifles to civilian security squads on Oct 28 (Saturday), Israel’s Haaretz outlet reported.

The images purportedly showed Ben-Gvir handing out arms at political events in Bnei Brak and El’ad—both towns near Tel Aviv in which the religious right wing dominates two towns.

“I’m telling you, dear citizens:&nbsp;a handgun can save a family, a rifle can save an entire building,” Ben-Gvir was quoted as saying by Haaretz during at an event in southern Ashkelon city.

<h2>Biden admin angry with Israeli minister&nbsp;</h2>

According to reports, the Biden administration said that it would halt supplying arms to the country if they are used by civilians, or seen being distributed at political events.

The US government also threatened to halt an order of some 20,000 rifles purchased by the National Security Ministry from American suppliers.

“President [Joe] Biden directed his team to ensure Israel has what it needs to defend itself, consistent with international law, and we are actively providing additional security assistance to the&nbsp;Israeli Defence Forces,” a state department spokesperson was quoted as saying by the Telegraph on Sunday (Oct 29).

“Our assistance will flow quickly to meet Israel’s urgent needs,” he added

Israel has been reportedly arming volunteer security squads in view of possible unrest in Palestinian communities ever since the war with Hamas began.

<h2>US halts arms sales to other countries, except Ukraine and Israel</h2>

Notably, it comes just days after US Commerce Department suspended sales of most US-made firearms for 90 days to ensure it doesn’t “undermine the country’s interests”.

However, it made exceptions to Israel and Ukraine—who are both currently engaged in a bloody war with Hamas and Russia, respectively—and about 40 other countries that are part of an export-control agreement.

However, it is not clear if the threat of not sending rifles took place before or after the commerce department’s decision.

“The review will be conducted with urgency and will enable the Department to more effectively assess and mitigate risk of firearms being diverted to entities or activities that promote regional instability, violate human rights, or fuel criminal activities,” the Department said in announcing the pause.

The meeting has been requested by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as Arab representative of the UNSC seeks a binding resolution for a humanitarian pause in the ongoing Gaza conflict.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has already overwhelmingly voted for a humanitarian pause but&nbsp;the UNGA does not have power to pass binding resolutions. The UNSC has that authority.

When it sought the emergency meeting, the UAE stressed that “The importance of the protection of civilians, according to international humanitarian law, international treaties for the protection of civilians and human rights, and the need to ensure that they are not targeted during conflict”.

It is unlikely that a vote will be held immediately before discussion but looking at the volatile situation in the Middle East, there may be a demand to find a quick solution.

He said that New Delhi takes a strong position on terrorism because "we are big victims of terrorism".&nbsp;

"Today, a good government and strong governance stand up for its people. Just as good governance is necessary at home, right judgements are necessary abroad," he said while speaking at a Town hall in Bhopal on Oct 28.&nbsp;

The foreign minister said that India "will have no credibility if we say that when terrorism impacts us, it's very serious; when it happens to somebody else, it's not serious".

His comments came amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, which has escalated tensions across West Asia, with fears of spillover in the region. He didn't directly mention the Israel war, but his remarks&nbsp;can be seen as a veiled reference to it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

India abstained from voting on the Jordanian resolution which called for an "immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce" between Israeli forces and Hamas terrorists in Gaza.&nbsp;

The Jordanian-led draft resolution was adopted by the General Assembly, with 120 votes in favour.&nbsp;

A total of 14 were against it and there were 45 abstentions. The 45 nations that abstained from voting on the resolution included Iceland, India, Panama, Lithuania and Greece.&nbsp;

The foreign minister also mentioned other significant stances on various external affairs. He argued that good governance is not necessary only at home, but also abroad.&nbsp;

Talking about the Russia-Ukraine war and India's decision to buy oil from Moscow, he said, "I know there was a lot of attention that we took a strong stance about our right to buy oil from Russia."&nbsp;

"But I want you to think, had we cowered before the pressure, had we not exercised this option, think how much higher would have been the price of the petroleum products. Think how much higher inflation would have gone up in the country," he said. &nbsp;

India needs to take a 'consistent position' on terrorism, says Jaishankar

Amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, another Gaza hospital has come under fire as per reports. On Sunday, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said that the Israeli military was putting civilians at risk by repeatedly bombing near its Al-Quds hospital in central Gaza's Tel al-Hawa.

The medical organisation in a statement said that "the Israeli army deliberately continues to launch rockets directly near Al-Quds hospital with the aim of forcing medical staff, displaced individuals and patients to evacuate the hospital."

This, as per The Palestinian Red Crescent Society, has "caused significant damage to hospital departments and exposed residents and patients to suffocation".

Furthermore, as per the organisation, some 14,000 displaced people sheltering in the hospital are also affected by the Israeli bombing.

<h2>Evacuation ordered</h2>

Talking to news agency AFP, Hospital director Bashar Murad revealed that, on Sunday, twice, they received calls, and threats from Israeli forces asking them to evacuate the facility.

"We received strongly worded threats from the occupation (Israeli) forces to immediately evacuate Al-Quds hospital in the Gaza Strip as it will be bombed," he said.

On Facebook, the group said, "Since this morning, there has been raids 50 metres away from the hospital."

However, as per a military spokesperson, these calls were not threats, rather they were "part of the military's overall call asking people to head to the south" of the Gaza Strip.

Raisi said on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday: "The crimes of the Zionist regime have crossed the red lines, and this may force everyone to take action."&nbsp;

"Washington asks us to not do anything, but they keep giving widespread support to Israel," he added.&nbsp;

"The US sent messages to the Axis of Resistance but received a clear response on the battlefield," he said.&nbsp;

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing massive heat over the apparent security lapse over the Oct 7 Hamas terror attack, on Sunday (Oct 29) shifted the blame at his intelligence chiefs saying that he was never warned of an all-front attack.

This comes after the heads of the military, the domestic spy agency Shin Bet and even the finance minister, all acknowledged their failures, except Netanyahu.

In a post on social media X, which has since been deleted, the PM, who is also referred to as Bibi by his supporters, said, “At no time and no stage was a warning given to Prime Minister Netanyahu regarding war intentions of Hamas. On the contrary, all security officials, including the head of army intelligence and the head of the Shin Bet, estimated that Hamas was deterred and interested in an arrangement."

He had posted on social media after a joint press conference with Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and Minister Benny Gantz.

<h2>Massive uproar&nbsp;</h2>

However, this post caused massive uproar among the political establishment and the public, and even among his cabinet, forcing Netanyahu to withdraw his statement and issue a rare apology hours later.

“I was wrong. The things I said following the press conference should not have been said and I apologize for that.”

“I give full backing to all the heads of the security services. I am sending strength to the [IDF] chief of staff and the commanders and soldiers of the IDF who are on the frontlines and fighting for our home.”

After peace, Israel's ties with Turkey become casualty of Israel-Hamas war

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday (Oct 28) said that Tel Aviv would explore "every option" available in order to secure the release of more than 220 hostages that were held captive by the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza during its onslaught on Oct 7.

He further stated that his country has begun the “second stage” of its war against the militant group.

“We have one main goal to beat the enemy and guarantee our existence,” he said at the press conference.

Netanyahu further elucidating on the military offensive remarked that the fighting inside the Gaza Strip would be "long and difficult" as the Israeli ground forces operate in the besieged Palestinian enclave for more than 24 hours.

"The war in the (Gaza) Strip will be long and difficult and we are prepared for it," Netanyahu told a news conference after meeting families of hostages held in Gaza since surprise Hamas attacks on southern Israel on October 7.

Hamas said that it was ready to release the hostages it took as captives under the condition that Israel agree to free the purported Palestinian prisoners. Israel describes such Palestinian prisoners as Hamas operatives and a threat to its national security.&nbsp;

"The price to pay for the large number of enemy hostages in our hands is to empty the (Israeli) prisons of all Palestinian prisoners," Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades spokesman Abu Obeida said in a statement broadcast by the Hamas-run Al-Aqsa television channel.

"If the enemy wants to close this file of detainees in one go, we are ready for it. If it wants to do it step-by-step, we are ready for that too."

While explaining India's decision to abstain from voting, India's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations Yojna Patel said that there is no justification for terror and the country is shocked by the October 7 terror attack on Israel.&nbsp;

India also called for the release of hostages held captive in Gaza by the Hamas Islamist terror group and welcomed all the efforts of de-escalation of tensions terming the humanitarian crisis in Gaza concerning.&nbsp;

To find a resolution to the ongoing Israel-Hams war, UNGA's 193 members met in the emergency special session to vote on a&nbsp;resolution moved by Jordan which had the backing of over 40 countries, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives, South Africa, and Russia.&nbsp;

<h2>Resolution adopted with 120 nations voting 'yes'&nbsp;</h2>

The "Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations" resolution was adopted with 120 nations voting 'Yes', 14 'No', and 45 abstaining. 
 
In addition to India, other countries including Australia, Germany, Canada, Japan, Ukraine and the UK also abstained from voting on the resolution. The US said that not mentioning Hamas in the resolution is equated to "omission of evil".

<h2>Canadian amendments to resolution</h2>

Prior to the voting, an amendment proposed by Canada and backed by the US was considered. India voted yes for the Canadian amendment to Jordanian proposal on Israel Palestine resolution that condemned the Hamas terror attack on Israel. However the resolution was not adopted since it did not get a 2/3rd vote in UNGA.&nbsp;

Israel unleashed its bombing campaign after Hamas gunmen stormed across the Gaza border on October 7, killing 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and seizing more than 220 hostages, according to Israeli officials.&nbsp;

The health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza said Israeli strikes had killed 7,703 people, mainly civilians, including more than 3,500 children.&nbsp;

The UN rights chief also condemned the Internet and telecommunications blackout that has hit the Palestinian enclave since Friday.&nbsp;

"Compounding the misery and suffering of civilians, Israeli strikes on telecommunications installations and subsequent Internet shutdown have effectively left Gazans with no way of knowing what is happening across Gaza and cut them off from the outside world," he said.&nbsp;

"Ambulances and civil defence teams are no longer able to locate the injured, or the thousands of people estimated to be still under the rubble.&nbsp;

"When these hostilities end, those who have survived will face the rubble of their homes and the graves of their family members," Turk said.&nbsp;

He called on all parties "to do all in their power to de-escalate the conflict".&nbsp;

The conflict is the fifth and deadliest in Gaza since Israel unilaterally withdrew from the Palestinian territory in 2005.&nbsp;

The latest Israeli strikes against Hamas, the Islamist group that has ruled Gaza since 2007, were the most intense since the war broke out. They coincided with ground operations.&nbsp;

UN warns of 'potential for thousands more to die' in Gaza

Palestinian militant group Hamas said that on Moscow's request, it is trying to find eight Russian-Israeli dual citizens who were held captive during its attack on Israel to free them, Russian news agencies reported on Saturday (Oct 28).

Russia, which has begun diplomatic efforts to free hostages held in Gaza, does not consider Hamas to be a terror group and has good relations with it.

"From the Russian side, via the foreign ministry, we received a list of citizens that have dual citizenship," senior Hamas representative Moussa Abu Marzook was cited as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency.&nbsp;

"We are looking for those people... It is hard but we are looking. And when we find them, we will let them go."&nbsp;

"We are very attentive to this list and will process it carefully because we consider Russia to be the closest friend," he said. &nbsp;

"About the peaceful citizens that were taken and that are now in Gaza, we treat them as guests."&nbsp;

"If Gaza is destroyed and 2 million inhabitants are expelled, as some politicians in Israel and abroad propose, this will create a catastrophe for many decades, if not centuries," warned Lavrov.

"It is necessary to stop, and to announce humanitarian programmes to save the population under blockade."

Lavrov also said that Russia was in close contact with Israel too.

"We remain in full contact with Israel, and our ambassador is regularly in touch with them," said Lavrov.

"We are sending signals about the need to seek a peaceful solution and not to follow through with this announced 'scorched earth' strategy."&nbsp;

According to local media reports, a record 150,000 applicants have applied for gun licenses within weeks since Hamas launched attacks on Israel. To put the spike into perspective, during the same period last year, just 42 applicants showed up.

In central Kfar Saba Shooting Range, they were holding just one training course per day, now they’re holding three to four daily. Some centres are hiring more staff to accommodate the massive demand.

<h2>Blessing from the government</h2>

The trend of buying personal firearms is further fuelled by a recent shift in government policy. So far, issuing gun licenses has been highly restricted in the country, involving an arduous application process which would often take months.

Now, it is a matter of some days, with most of the work done online. The Israeli minister for police, Itamar Ben-Gvir, believes private gun ownership is actually a good thing for internal stability.

Even Prime Minister Netanyahu himself has backed the idea.

The war against Hamas included “encouraging civilians and helping civilians to arm themselves for their self-defence,” he said in a televised speech on Wednesday (Oct 25).

They believe making firearms too freely available raises the risk of accidental shootings, murder and suicide.

Israelis descending upon gun stores in large numbers after Oct 7 attack

The Israeli military has unequivocally told some news organisations that it can’t guarantee the safety of their journalists currently reporting from Gaza.

The statement from the IDF came after news organisations Reuters and AFP demanded Israel not to target their journalists on the battlefield.

"The IDF is targeting all Hamas military activity throughout Gaza," the IDF statement said, adding that Hamas deliberately put military operations "in the vicinity of journalists and civilians".

"Under these circumstances, we cannot guarantee your employees' safety and strongly urge you to take all necessary measures for their safety," the IDF made clear.

<h2>Reuters and AFP concerned</h2>

Reacting to the IDF’s statement, Reuters said it would prevent the journalists on the ground from fulfilling their duties.&nbsp;

“The situation on the ground is dire. The IDF’s unwillingness to give assurances about the safety of our staff threatens their ability to deliver the news about this conflict without fear of being injured or killed," a Reuters statement said.

The United Nations General Assembly, on Friday (Oct 27) overwhelmingly voted in favour of the Jordanian resolution which called for an immediate humanitarian truce between Israel and the Palestinian terror group Hamas. The resolution also demands “continuous, sufficient and unhindered” provisions to supply aid to Gaza and protection of civilians.&nbsp;

On the other hand, the resolution proposed by Canada and backed by 35 member states, including the United States which sought condemnation of Hamas and its attacks on southern Israel on October 7, failed to garner enough votes.&nbsp;

This comes after the UNGA and the Security Council failed four times to pass a resolution to take action in Gaza over the past two weeks.&nbsp;

<h2>What do the two resolutions say?</h2>

The resolution proposed by Canada, the first one to be voted on, said that it “unequivocally rejects and condemns the terrorist attacks by Hamas” in Israel, including the taking of more than 200 hostages.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Jordanian resolution, which was backed by 40 member states, called for an “immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce”. It also demanded compliance with international humanitarian law amid the ongoing war as well as provisions to supply aid to Gaza.&nbsp;

The Jordan-authored resolution also called for the “immediate and unconditional release” of all civilians held captive. However, the resolution did not mention Hamas’ attacks on southern Israel.&nbsp;

While these resolutions are not binding or represent the official position of the UNGA until adopted they hold political weight. This comes as the pressure on Israel has been ramped up in recent days after it said that it would launch a “ground operation” in Gaza.

<h2>What happened?</h2>

The Canada-led resolution failed after managing to garner enough votes with 88 nations in favour, 55 against, and 23 nations abstaining. On the other hand, the Jordanian resolution was adopted by the UNGA with 120 votes in favour, 14 against and 45 abstentions.

General Assembly&nbsp;stressed on the “importance of preventing further destabilization and escalation of violence in the region”, urging “all parties to exercise maximum restraint and upon all those with influence on them to work toward this objective.”

This comes amid fears that the war between Israel and Hamas could expand to the rest of the region. It has also called on Israel to cancel its order to civilians in northern Gaza – as many as 1.1 million people – to move to the south of the Palestinian territory.&nbsp;

The General Assembly “firmly rejects any attempts at the forced transfer of the Palestinian civilian population,” the resolution said. It also called for the “immediate and unconditional release of all civilians who are being illegally held captive,” but did not mention Hamas anywhere in the text.&nbsp;

<h2>Israel slams ‘ridiculous’ resolution</h2>

Gilad Erdan, Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, reiterated the country’s right to defend itself and slammed the resolution which does not mention Hamas’ attacks which was one of the worst ones that Israel has witnessed in its 75-year-old history.

“This ridiculous resolution has the audacity to call for a truce, the goal for this resolution’s truce is that Israel should cease to defend itself, so Hamas can light us on fire,” said Erdan. “Why are you defending murderers? Why are you defending terrorists…? What is going on here?”&nbsp;

He also said that Israel is “closely monitoring” the humanitarian situation in Gaza, “and we know that there is no humanitarian crisis in accordance with humanitarian law trusting the reports coming out of is exactly like trusting reports from ISIS,” referring to the Islamic State militant group.&nbsp;

<h2>Hamas, Palestinian Authority welcome decision</h2>

Hamas and the Palestinian Authority welcomed the adoption of the Jordanian resolution. “We demand its immediate application to allow the entry of fuel and humanitarian aid for civilians,” said the Palestinian militant group in a statement.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority Israel’s campaign against the Palestinian people “reaches a new peak of brutality,” there was “a solid international position rejecting Israel's unhinged aggression”.

UN adopts resolution calling for ‘humanitarian truce’ between Israel and Hamas. Here's what happened

As the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza rages on, hundreds of Palestinians took to the streets in the occupied West Bank’s Ramallah, on Friday (Oct 27) to express support for the militant group. Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, Israeli security forces restricted young Palestinians from entering the Al-Aqsa mosque for prayers and deployed personnel in strength in a bid to quell any unrest spilling over from the war in Gaza.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened in West Bank?</h2>

According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, Israeli troops killed four Palestinians during a dawn raid in the north of the occupied West Bank. Two of those killed were identified as members of Hamas.

The protests in the West Bank were said to have started just hours after the raid. At least three Palestinians were also killed in “violent clashes” in the city of Jenin during an incursion by “a large contingent” of Israeli forces, reported Wafa.

Around a dozen people were injured during the skirmishes, claimed a Palestinian news agency report. Protests also erupted in Hebron in the West Bank, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

The continued Israeli raids as well as alleged attacks by the settlers in the West Bank have sparked protests and unrest for months now, but the situation has worsened since Hamas launched its surprise attack on southern Israel from Gaza on October 7.&nbsp;

According to the Israeli military, their personnel came under attack during arrest operations in the city of Jenin and fired back, killing two men.&nbsp;

Subsequently, the Islamic Jihad group confirmed one of them belonged to it and Hamas, in a separate statement, confirmed that one of their fighters was killed in Jenin.&nbsp;

The death toll due to the violence in the West Bank since the beginning of the war now stands at 110, reported Wafa.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened in Jerusalem?</h2>

Israeli security forces stopped young Palestinians from entering Al-Aqsa mosque, a contested site which has been at the centre of many deadly clashes and fights between Israelis and Palestinians over the years.&nbsp;

According to a Reuters journalist, a large number of Israeli police kept guard around Al-Aqsa as Palestinians gathered for Friday prayers and at one point they fired tear gas.&nbsp;

This was the third week in a row that Palestinians were restricted from praying at the mosque following the Hamas assault on southern Israel.&nbsp;

Palestinians were reportedly made to say prayers outside the Old City, gathering by roadsides while Israeli security forces watched. However, eventually, about 5,000 elderly worshippers were allowed into Al-Aqsa mosque.&nbsp;

According to the Jerusalem Islamic Endowments Department, which is in charge of the mosque, said that normally about 50,000 would take part.&nbsp;

This comes as the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry&nbsp;released a list of names of almost 7,000 Gazans it said had been killed in Israeli strikes.

<h2>A mockery of tragedy</h2>

In these videos, people can be seen mocking different aspects of Palestinian suffering. Due to the sensitive nature of the videos, we have not attached them here, but they can easily be accessed on all social media platforms.&nbsp;

An alarming aspect of these videos is the small children&nbsp;who can be seen taking part in the taunting.

In some videos, people carry dolls swaddled in cloth — a mockery of reports of the mothers who have lost their babies to the Israeli strikes.

One such video poking fun at Palestinian mothers by an Israeli influencer identified by The Express Tribune as Eve Cohen sparked controversy earlier this week. Cohen in the video allegedly claimed that mothers are faking the deaths of their children.

In others, they flaunt water, or light candles in the dark — jeering at Palestinians who have gone without water and power for days.&nbsp;

<h2>A wave of outrage</h2>

The videos by Cohen and others have predictably sparked widespread outrage. Netizens are calling out people in the videos for their apparent lack of sensitivity towards the Palestinian plight.&nbsp;

On X, one user questioned, "Is Palestinian genocide the new source of Israeli comedy or something?"

Another said that the videos were an "example of the anti-Palestinian racist conspiracy theory of 'pallywood,' where some Zionists argue that Palestinians manipulate media through 'faking suffering' - unsurprisingly, it's also very similar to anti-Semitic tropes too. Very telling about Israel supporters."
