Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is all set for the latest season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the predations are in the final stage. While Mumbai will look to put behind a disappointing 2022 season, their main aim will be to conquer the glorious title for the sixth time. However, ahead of the start he was disappointed to miss out on the services of star man Jasprit Bumrah and says those are big shoes to fill in.

“It will be a big miss," the India skipper said.

"It is sad, but we do understand how big his (Jasprit) shoes are to fill."

While MI are yet to find a suitable replacement for Jasprit, the franchise is looking to close in on a replacement as the IPL season is set for a kickoff in less than 48 hours. Mumbai will have the luxury of getting an experienced player but replacing Bumrah will be a big headache.

"Yes, we have been discussing a few options and hopefully we can close it in the next couple of days and let you know about it," Rohit said on Wednesday.

"There is an opportunity that is up for grabs, to fill that place. A lot of young players will get an opportunity and this is a platform for them to come out and express themselves. There are a couple of guys who have been with this team for the last two years and they are very much ready to step up,” Rohit added.

MI’s head coach Mark Boucher also highlighted Bumrah’s absence but insisted there is an opportunity up for grabs. According to him, some young players that can come in and make an impact with their bench strength also a feasible option. There are talks of Arjun Tendulkar’s potential debut for the franchise after he was bought for Rs 30 lakh in the 2022 auctions.

"We will see tonight (in a practice match). He's playing tonight. One of the things about international players is that they need the freedom to move around a bit. All of them have been playing cricket. Jofra obviously is coming off a major injury, he has been playing quite a bit of cricket lately, which is good. He's in a good space. He's ready to get up there and perform, which, for us, is a good place to be in. We will see tonight how he goes," Boucher said while addressing Bumrah’s potential replacement headache.

Mumbai will bid to win their sixth IPL title in the upcoming season and will start their campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The contest will take place at M. England batter Liam Livingstone will miss the Punjab Kings (PBKS) campaign opener of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 as he is awaiting a fitness clearance from England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after recovering from a knee injury sustained last year in December, reported ESPNCricinfo on Wednesday.

PBKS will open its IPL campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders at the home arena of Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali from April 1. Livingstone is a vital part of PBKS set-up for his all-round abilities. He has not played any competitive cricket since picking up the injury on his Test debut against Pakistan back in December.

He had also suffered an ankle injury during the Hundred tournament last year. He was recently in Dubai for almost a week for his county Lancashire's pre-season tour and was at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Livingstone had a great campaign for PBKS in IPL 2022. In 14 matches, he scored 437 runs at an average of 36.41 and a massive strike rate of 182.08. He scored four half-centuries in the tournament with best score of 70. He also picked up six wickets with his spin bowling. Livingstone has also represented England in 12 ODIs and 29 T20Is, He also has scored the fastest century by an England player in T20Is.

But PBKS finished at the sixth spot for the fourth season in a row despite his heroics. They won seven and lost seven out of their 14 matches, ending up with 14 points. They fell two points short of a potential spot in a playoff.

Matthew Short was the 'Player of the Tournament' during the Big Bash League (BBL) 2022-23, representing Adelaide Strikers. He was the second-highest run scorer in the tournament with 458 runs at an average of 35.23 in 14 matches, with one century and two fifties and a best of 100*.

He also took 11 wickets in 14 matches, with the best bowling figures of 3/14. In all, he has played 67 T20s, in which he has scored 1,409 runs in 64 matches at an average of 23.88, with one century and seven fifties. He also has 22 wickets in the format.

Besides Livingstone, South African pacer Kagiso Rabada will also miss the opening nggame because of international cricket commitments. The bowler is expected to arrive in India on April 3 ahead of away match against Rajasthan Royals.

IPL 2023: Dhoni fever grips Chennai as fans go CRAZY for a glimpse of MSD - WATCH

Former Australia skipper and Rajasthan Royals star Steve Smith is set to feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) season 16, despite going unsold in the auctions. The star Aussie all-rounder will be seen in the commentary box for the upcoming season after it was confirmed by the broadcasters. Smith was last seen in the IPL in 2021 when Delhi Capitals signed him for Rs 2.20 crore and will now handle the microphone rather than the bat.

"Steve Smith has joined the expert panel for the marquee tournament. Smith will be making his broadcast debut with Star Sports, adding his invaluable insights and expertise to Star Sports' already impressive roster of panelists," the broadcaster said in a statement.

Smith, 33, announced his return to the tournament on Twitter on Monday, saying in a teaser video: "Namaste, India. I've got some exciting news for you: I'm joining IPL 2023.”

The Aussie star first came into the spotlight in 2012, when he was snapped by the Pune Warriors India and would then play for the Rising Pune Supergiants. With the latter, Smith reached the final of the IPL in 2017 before failing to take his team over the line in the final over of the season finale. Smith then signed for Rajasthan Royals and led the side before being released ahead of the 2021 season.

The former Australia captain was recently seen leading the ODI side as regular skipper Pat Cummins was absent due to the death of his ill mother. Smith’s Aussie side came from behind to win 2-1 while condemning India to their first home ODI series defeat in four years.

Till now he has played 103 matches in his IPL career. He has scored 2485 runs, with an average of 34.51. He has also slammed one century and 11 half-centuries, with his highest IPL score being 101 runs.

The IPL 2023 season will start on Friday, March 31 when defending champions Gujarat Titans take on four-time champions Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmadabad.

"We are fortunate to have Sangakkara as our coach. He is a legendary player and having him in the dressing room and on the ground while practising is a big boost for us. With his vast experience, we are always in the process of improving ourselves. He is constantly thinking of different strategies for the benefit of the squad,” said Samson.

RR will start their IPL 2023 campaign against 2016 champions Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday, April 2. The contest will take place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad with the IPL yet again returning to a home-away format.

Hardik has so far played only 11 Tests for Team India despite making his international debut in early 2016. The 29-year-old all-rounder recently opined on his possible Test return when a reporter asked him if he will be part of India's forthcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final in early June, where they will face Australia at The Oval, London.

To this, Hardik said, "No. I am an ethically very strong person. I haven’t done 10 per cent to reach there. I am not even a part of 1 per cent. So me coming there and taking someone’s place will ethically not go well." He added, "If I want to play Test cricket, I’ll go through the grind and earn my spot. Hence, for that reason I will not be available for the WTC final or future Test series until I don’t feel that I have earned my spot."

Stokes, a big money purchase for CSK for Rs 16.25 crore arrived at the CSK camp last week and will look to help the team rise from ashes after a disappointing 2022 season.

Stokes is likely to play as a specialist batter at the start of the 2023 IPL and has had a cortisone injection in order to manage an injury to his left knee, according to a report published on Tuesday.

"My understanding is he's ready to go as a batsman from the start," Mike Hussey, Super Kings' batting coach, told ESPNcricinfo and PA news.

While limited-overs cricket has already seen the best out of the former Rajasthan Royals man, he has excelled in the red-ball format for England. Stokes is yet to lose a Test series as England skipper and has led them to series wins against New Zealand, South Africa and Pakistan.

Stokes also guided England in the Birmingham Test, where his side beat India in July 2022. Most recently he was seen in action in the Test series against New Zealand, where his side was on the receiving end. New Zealand's win against England saw them become just the third nation to have won a Test match despite following-on.

Cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has backed the Chennai Super Kings to reach the playoffs in IPL 2023. The former four-time IPL champions stood second-last on the points table in 2022, and now, with the inclusion of World Cup winner in Ben Stokes, Chopra believes CSK will better their previous result.

Speaking on AakashVani on Jio Cinema, Chopra said the Chennai team revolves around MS Dhoni and a plethora of all-rounders they have at their disposal, and that, their success will be defined by these two only.&nbsp;

Sharing his thoughts on Chennai’s chances this season, Chopra opines they look strong on paper, and with matches scheduled to take place at Chepauk, the team can prosper. The former Kolkata Knight Riders opener added that knowing MS Dhoni is back leading the team and that this could potentially be his last season in IPL, wonders are expected to happen.

"They are looking like a very decent team on paper. Where can this team reach? They should reach the playoffs if they play to their potential. Dhoni is the captain, there is an emotional connect, it is the last season, and the matches are going to be played in Chennai, which is their fortress," Chopra said.

Elaborating on whom he thinks would top the charts in both departments – batting and bowling, given the firepower CSK have, Chopra said the returning Deepak Chahar could be Chennai’s stand-out bowler while New Zealand’s Devon Conway is sure to make headlines with heaps of runs throughout the tournament. While Chahar missed out on playing last year’s IPL due to an injury, he is likely to remain fit and available for this season. Conway, on the other hand, was among the runs for CSK in 2022, hitting 252 runs at an impressive strike rate of 145.67.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 is all set to begin on March 31, with the first match between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad, at 03:30 PM IST. A total of 70-72 matches will be played across 52 matchdays at 12 different venues. These include Ahmedabad, Mohali, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur, Mumbai, Guwahati and Dharamshala. This year, the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) made some amendments to the rules and formats of the tournament including the restoration of the home-and-away method this season. "I think we are going to see the real Prithvi Shaw this season," the former Aussie skipper has said. Ponting made the assertion based on Shaw's pre-season practice and attitude.

I honestly feel that this is going to be his biggest season in the IPL. He just has that different look in his eye this year. You can see, he’s hungrier than ever," said Punter.

The former Aussie batsman was confident of Shaw making it big this season and said that he feels that the upcoming season is going to be defining&nbsp;for the Mumbai batsman.

"It just seems to me that this season, something has really clicked with Prithvi. I actually said to him at the end of the training two days ago, ‘This game, if you don’t pay full attention to it, it’ll take away from you. Maxwell won the IPL title with Mumbai Indians in his solitary season with the franchise in 2013 and will look to bring the winning mentality to the table. IPL 2023: Glenn Maxwell reveals fitness status ahead of season kickoff, says ' I am not at my 100 percent'

Top T20 batter in the world, Chris Gayle, has showered praises on his former IPL teammate Virat Kohli saying he loves his passion for the game but has also claimed that he is better than his Indian counterpart in dancing. Ahead of the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League that starts in less than a week, Gayle revealed batting alongside Virat was fantastic and that Kohli needs to get credit for his performances over the years.

"Batting with Virat was just fantastic. I like the passion he has for the game. I like his passion and his work ethic, it's fantastic. You have to give him credit for that, and he wants to show it with his performances," Gayle said as quoted in TOI.

Gayle joined Virat at RCB in 2011, and till the time both played together, they accounted for ten plus century-stand partnerships – an IPL record in itself.

"We had a good understanding with each other. We complemented each other well. Sometimes people might say 'Chris didn't run between the wickets'. "I bat with Virat, and I ran between the wickets, so I don't want anyone to use this as an alibi to say we don't run between the wickets. We have over nine (ten) 100-run partnerships, check how many times how many twos and threes we took. I was the quickest one between the wickets. Don't get it twisted," Gayle added.

An entertainer on-and-off the field, Gayle is regarded as the live wire. Sharing his dressing room experiences with Virat Kohli, Gayle said while Kohli knew some dance moves, he will still fall second in a competition with Chris irrespective of the dance form being an Indian or Caribbean.

"Sharing a dressing room with Virat and the other guys, once I am there, I am always jovial and having a lot of fun, dancing and everything like that. I'd show them a few moves and realise Virat's got the skills. He can move, you know. Indian Premier League (IPL) is just about a week away and defending champion Gujarat Titans will kick-start the season against Chennai Super Kings on March 31. The defending champs have added a few faces in the squad from the last year's auction and one of them is upcoming pacer Shivam Mavi.

The former KKR bowler, during a recent chat with the news agency ANI, Shivam Mavi, however, full of praise for Titans skipper Hardik Pandya and called him a 'cool captain' - a term usually associated with former India skipper MS Dhoni.

"I am very excited to play for Gujarat Titans. Hardik is a very cool captain. He backs up youngsters who are new to the team. The environment is very friendly. So when a youngster steps in such an environment, it is a good thing for him and he is able to perform better," said the bowler.

Notably, Mavi is also made his India debut in limited-overs cricket recently under Hardik Pandya's captaincy and said that Pandya was very supportive during that time as well.

"When I played under him for India for the first time...he was very supportive... support is a very important factor and if the captain supports you it feels very good. It is in the hands of the captain and management to create a good atmosphere. You can see that a team performs well if the atmosphere is good," said Mavi.

Titans' head coach Ashish Nehra, who is also a pacer, got the words of appraisal from the young pacer. Mavi was full of praise for Nehra's approach of giving freedom to players.

"He gives us freedom, he lets us use our time properly on the ground and if you want rest he will allow it. He is like a friend, if you want something you can go and ask him. Sometimes players don't feel like practising on the ground. In such situations, he doesn't burden us...he keeps the environment light," added Mavi.

Jadeja had a long, frank chat with captain MS Dhoni, the most important man in the franchise in Mumbai last year after he opted out of the IPL with an injury. He also had a one-on-one with Viswanathan before the 'air of misunderstanding' was cleared. Viswanathan refused to divulge details of his conversation but he did confirm that all parties had free, frank and long conversations.

In the 10 games he played last season, he scored 116 runs at an average of 19 and claimed five wickets at an economy rate of 7.52, numbers that don't flatter one of the best all-rounders in the game currently.

Although the conversations were never made public, Jadeja was unhappy and was on the verge of getting traded from the team. There were reports that he could be released from the franchise in November’s trading window, however, the timely intervention of Dhoni and CEO Viswanathan saw Jadeja remain in CSK colours.

CSK will start their IPL 2023 campaign against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) on Friday, March 31. The clash will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as CSK try to start on a high.

IPL 2023: DC Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly says Rishabh Pant must take his time to heal

IPL franchise Punjab Kings have announced that star-English batter Jonny Bairstow is ruled out of the upcoming season owing to a freak injury he suffered while playing golf with his friends in Yorkshire last year. They have replaced the England international with an uncapped Australian batter Matthew Short, who made headlines in BBL this year for registering 458 runs (second-highest) at an average of 35.23 and a strike rate of 144.47.

Punjab via BCCI was awaiting the latest fitness status of Bairstow from the ECB after the right-handed batter had resumed training in late February. As per the latest reports, Jonny returned to the nets in the past week and is likely to feature in Division two of the County Championship which usually starts in May. Considering this, PBKS announced his replacement in this video posted on their social media handle.

Delhi who are coached by the former Australia skipper will be one of the favourites to clinch the title. Ponting, in the final stage of the preparations for the season, voiced his opinion about the new rule and thinks it will negate the role of an all-rounder.

"It [usage of Impact Player] depends if you bat or bowl first," Ponting said at an event in New Delhi.

"So at the toss, we will be putting in a bowling-first team and a batting-first team. And obviously if you bat first, you're probably going to sub in a batter. Or if you bat first and lose an early wicket, you might want to bring in a batter straight on top of that. So there are a number of different ways to use it.

While there are mixed opinions about the rule, Ponting believes that unless a side has a world-class player they won’t be excessively using the impact player. He further adds, there will not be many teams who will use a batter at number seven and perhaps could help in the bowling department.

"It actually almost negates the role of allrounders in the game now. So unless they're absolutely world-class and they're getting picked either as a batsman or as a bowler, not sort of a bits and pieces guy, then I don't think you'll see many, many teams this year actually use the guy that might bat at seven and maybe bowling over or two. Because you don't need those guys anymore."
