The scheme promised high returns on investments in gemstones, gold, and silver, luring individuals from the lower middle class, including small traders and vendors.
The scam came to light after six Torres jewellery stores abruptly closed last week, leaving investors with unpaid dues. Following complaints, the police registered cases against Platinum Hern Private Limited, the parent company, and several individuals, including its directors, CEO, general manager, and a store in-charge.
Charges include cheating, criminal conspiracy, and related offences.
Torres jewellery outlets, launched in February 2023 across six locations in Mumbai and surrounding areas, sold gemstone jewellery and promoted a bonus investment scheme. Customers investing Rs 1 lakh were promised a moissanite pendant worth Rs 10,000 and weekly returns of up to 11 per cent. Investors reported receiving some payouts initially, but payments ceased two months ago. Police investigations later revealed that the gemstones provided were fake.
In a final push to attract funds, Torres uploaded a video on January 5 promising an 11 per cent return for investments made before the deadline, with rates dropping afterwards. Many investors made last-minute cash payments, only to find the stores shuttered the following day.
The scheme also used luxury cars as prizes in lucky draws to entice more participants. Investigators are examining these vehicles, suspecting they were leveraged to boost credibility and attract additional investments.
The scam has affected hundreds of small-scale investors, with reported losses ranging from a few thousand rupees to crores. Seven complainants claim to have collectively invested over Rs 13 crore. Many victims expressed frustration, citing the presence of GST and CIN details on the company&rsquo;s documents, which they believed lent credibility to the scheme.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who led the consecration ceremony on January 22 last year, greeted citizens on the occasion.
"Best wishes to all citizens on the first anniversary of the consecration of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya. This temple, built after centuries of sacrifice, penance and struggle, is a great heritage of our culture and spirituality.
"I am confident that this divine and magnificent Ram temple will become a great inspiration in the accomplishment of the resolution of a developed India (Viksit Bharat)," he said in a post on X in Hindi.

"Sarla Maheshwari, who has come from Bhopal, said, "We reached Ayodhya two days ago to take part in the anniversary celebrations and are excited that today we will see the deity."

A German hangar tent has been set up at the Angad Teela site, capable of hosting up to 5,000 people.
Common people will have the opportunity to witness the grand event, which includes classical cultural performances, rituals and daily Ram Katha discourses at the pavilion and the 'yagnashala'.
"The trust has decided to invite common people who could not attend the consecration ceremony last year. They will be allowed to join all three days of events at the Angad Teela," Champat Rai, the general secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust had earlier said.

"The trust has decided to invite common people who could not attend the consecration ceremony last year. They will be allowed to join all three days of events at the Angad Teela," Champat Rai, the general secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust had earlier said. The trust also said that invitation letters have been distributed to guests, including the 110 VIPs, many of whom missed the original 'Pran Pratishtha' ceremony on January 22, 2024. Chidambaram will be best known for his contributions to India's nuclear weapons programme with which he had been associated since 1967, when peaceful nuclear explosion technology was much talked about globally.
He represented India at various global conferences organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
As part of Operation Smiling Buddha&mdash;the 1974 nuclear tests&mdash;Chidamaram was known to have personally brought the plutonium from Mumbai to Pokhran in Rajasthan.
He had famously donned army fatigues along with the then Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chairman APJ Abdul Kalam while working on the Pokhran-II tests&mdash;dubbed Operation Shakti&mdash;in 1998.
Chidambaram was at the helm of India's atomic programme when five nuclear tests were conducted on May 11 and May 13 in 1998.
The then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared India as a nuclear weapons state.
Among the five nuclear tests was also the thermo-nuclear device, popularly known as the neutron bomb.
Vajpayee's visit to ground zero in Pokhran days after the nuclear tests were conducted also was a testimony to the fact that there was no radioactivity contamination at the site.
Over a decade later, when some scientists associated with the 1998 nuclear tests questioned the efficacy of the thermo-nuclear device, Chidambaram and his successor Anil Kakodkar led a stout defence of the outcome.
Born on November 12, 1936, in Chennai, Chidambaram did his initial schooling at the Sanatan Dharam High School in Meerut. From eighth standard onwards, he studied at the PS High School at Mylapore in Chennai and graduated from the Presidency College.
Chidambaram did his postgraduate studies at Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru.
He was honoured with prestigious accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1975 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1999. He also received honourary doctorates from several universities and was a fellow of eminent Indian and international science academies.
He is survived by wife Chella and daughters Nirmala and Nithya.
"Dr Chidambaram was a doyen of science and technology whose contributions furthered India's nuclear prowess and strategic self-reliance. His loss is an irreparable one for the scientific community and the nation," Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, said.
Chidambaram will be remembered as a "trailblazer, an inspirational leader, and a dedicated mentor to countless scientists and engineers", he said.

India and the United States are expected to hold discussions on a range of strategic, regional, and bilateral issues, including the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET) during US National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan's two-day New Delhi visit, beginning Sunday.
Earlier today, the White House confirmed Sullivan's visit "for a capstone meeting" with Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval that will span a range of issues across the breadth of India-US partnership -- from space, defence, strategic technology cooperation, all the way also to shared security priorities in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
"This will be Mr. Sullivan's final trip to the Indo-Pacific region as National Security Advisor. He's very excited and looking forward to these conversations at this critical time," said White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby.
"During the visit, Mr. Sullivan will meet with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other Indian leaders. He will also visit the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, where he will be able to meet with young Indian entrepreneurs and give a speech outlining the significant steps that the United States and India have taken together to strengthen our innovation alliance under the US-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology, otherwise known as iCET," Kirby told reporters in Washington.
The visit takes place just before US President Joe Biden leaves office on January 20, ahead of Donald Trump being sworn in as the country's 47th president.
Both NSAs have acknowledged that the iCET, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden in May 2022, would play a defining role in deepening the strategic partnership between the two countries.
In June 2024, while addressing an iCET roundtable along with Sullivan, NSA Doval had spotlighted that India and the US must remain at the forefront of technology - especially in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductors, bio-tech and other emerging technologies - to protect and defend their value systems.
"iCET has achieved more than what we could imagine,&rdquo; said Doval, highlighting the progress made across the defence innovation roadmap and startups, while emphasising the importance of the growing semiconductor industry.
Sullivan mentioned three key buckets for technology partnerships -- innovation, production and deployment -- stressing the need for government support for the private sector.
"There exists bipartisan support for Indian industry in the US and building the ecosystem and supply chain manufacturing is the key to production," he told the industry leaders, last year.
"The core of iCET is about the idea of India and US being able to support each other and to encourage greater collaboration in the technology ecosystem, jointly innovate and find solutions to challenges," said Sullivan.
Last week, during his US visit, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met several key officials of the outgoing Joe Biden-led administration, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Sullivan, while reviewing the advancement of India-US partnership over the last four years.
