WION: With me is Ahmed Adeeb. He was the vice president of Maldives and the tourism minister as well, someone who played a key role in terms of making the brand Maldives in terms of tourism. So, welcome to WION. How do you see the developments which we have seen in the last 24 hours? The comments by sitting Maldivian ministers who are now former. And of course, the reaction by the Maldives government.

Ahmed Adeeb: Thank you. It's a very sad incident. I think it's something that should have never happened, and I'm glad that the Maldives government took the initiative to suspend them. This is another episode where we should be always careful not to offend our neighbours and also our friendly relations. And especially their comments on Prime Minister Modi were very racist and also very derogatory. It is not acceptable. And I think there's a very sad reaction from the public of India as well. So because of all that, I would conclude that this is something that should have never happened and also that this is something that should not be repeated.

WION: How do you see the India-Maldives relationship, if you can talk about it, given that you were the vice president of Maldives and have been engaging with the Indian government a lot?

Ahmed Adeeb: Yes. What I see is that Maldives and India, have so much history, and we have been always together. And during our time, it was actually during President Yamin's time, that this second helicopter agreement was signed. So these are things that didn't happen suddenly, but these are diplomatic relations. There were military relations and investment relations. So all these were very good until 2018, when President Yamin decided, when he lost the election, to start an India out campaign, and that party continued it, and which is now inherited by Dr Moise. Still, some elements in the party are against the relationship between Maldives and India, but I would say between the people of Maldives and the people of India, I think the relationship is warm. It's just very few people and also some extreme elements in the party. Other than that, what I see is that people to people, as well as government to government, the Maldives in India, should always have to have a friendly relationship because we are too close and we depend on each other, so we cannot distance ourselves.

WION: Now, talking about the current government, we have seen the Maldives president choosing other countries as his first visit. He, in fact, is visiting China. Now he's left Maldives for China on a state visit. Do you see the government taking a markedly anti-India stance?

Ahmed Adeeb: So it's been, like two months to the government so I'm also an observer, as you are. So what I see that is...what should have happened was the first state visit should be to India, which has been practised by almost all the presidents, including President Yamin himself. So this didn't happen. So what we see is, I would say, there are elements of anti-India in the party itself, and it is yet to be seen what the real government decisions they will take in the next few months, especially this trip as well. So we are yet to see what is the real stand of the government.

WION: So my final question to you is, do you think that the action taken by the government is a case of too little, too late? And if the suspension and the termination should have happened?

Ahmed Adeeb: Yeah, I believe that first it should be taken immediately. It should have never waited until it became a big social media thing against Maldives. So they should have taken action. And as well as this is too little, I've seen, actually, they should have resigned or made them resign or set them, because this is very embarrassing and also very sad for the country because now they are in power, they are the ruling party, so now they cannot be activists. So they have to be more responsible, I would say.

WION: Well, thank you so much, sir, for speaking to WION at such short notice. Thank you so much, sir.

Exclusive: Ex-vice president calls current India-Maldives row ‘very sad’ incident

After three Maldivian ministers made derogatory remarks against PM Modi, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on Monday (Jan 8) summoned Maldives High Commissioner Ibrahim Shaheeb.

Shaheeb arrived at the ministry in Delhi's South Block early in the morning and could be seen leaving the building a few minutes later.

The high-ranking official was summoned a day after the Indian government raised concerns over the derogatory comments made by the Maldivian ministers against PM Modi.

What is the controversy?

Ever since PM Modi visited Lakshadweep - an archipelago consisting of 36 islands located in the Arabian Sea, there has been an online discourse about whether the picturesque region could be the next Maldives.

However, the discourse did not go down well with certain Maldivian government officials as well as social media users who started foul-mouthing PM Modi as well as India.

Mariyam Shiuna, the deputy minister of youth empowerment, information and arts referred to PM Modi as a 'clown' and a 'puppet of Israel' and posted images from his visit to the archipelago.

“What a clown. The puppet of Israel Mr Narendra diver with a life jacket #VisitMaldives,” Shiuna posted on X.

Zahid Rameez, a Council member of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) also targeted India by posting: “The move is great. However, the idea of competing with us is delusional. How can they provide the service we offer? How can they be so clean? The permanent smell in the rooms will be the biggest downfall.”

Some other Maldivian leaders followed the trend and posted similar racist tirades masquerading as digs at India.

After the Indian side raised concerns, the Maldivian government on Sunday (Jan 7) suspended Shiuna, Malsha Shareef and Hassan Zihan over their derogatory comments.

India’s economic intelligence agency Enforcement Directorate (ED) has reportedly issued a lookout notice for Shahjahan Sheikh, a leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party after the agency’s officials were attacked by a mob for the second time in a row within a span of a few hours in the state of West Bengal.

The team of officials from the central agency were attacked by a mob in the Sandeshkhali village of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district when they were carrying out raids on Sheikh’s home for his alleged involvement in a million dollar ration distribution scam in the state.

Why was a lookout notice issued?

During the raids conducted by the ED late on Friday (Jan 5), the agency focussed its attention on former Bongaon Municipality Chairman and TMC leader Shankar Adhya who was arrested following an extensive search.

The ED reported that a sizeable mob, numbering between 800 and 1000 individuals, launched a violent attack on their officials with the apparent intent to cause harm.

The case for which the raids were conducted pertains to alleged corruption in ration distribution during the COVID-19 lockdown. Sheikh was being investigated due to his reported close links to the state food minister Jyoti Priya Mallick.

In a statement, the central agency said that their officials who were accompanied by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, were “badly attacked by crowds” who they said were suspected to be instigated by “Sheikh and his associates.”

At least three officers were hospitalised after they suffered what the ED has described as “grievous injuries” as the mob marched towards the officials “with an intention to cause death”.

The mob, according to the ED, also snatched official and personal belongings including laptops, wallets and cash. The police said no arrests were made as of Saturday evening but a few people have been detained for questioning.

In the statement, the central agency said that when they arrived at Sheikh’s house on Friday, the door was locked from the inside and the TMC leader refused to open it. “His mobile location at that time indicated that he was inside this house.”

Around half an hour later, the ED officials were taken by surprise after the mob charged them with weapons like lathis, stones, bricks, etc., and gheraoed them.

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar believes taking the Kashmir issue to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in 1948 was an error and that by abrogating Article 370, New Delhi closed a "window of vulnerability" which it had been "foolish enough" to open.

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar believes taking the Kashmir issue to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in 1948 was an error and that by abrogating Article 370, New Delhi closed a "window of vulnerability" which it had been "foolish enough" to open. According to Jaishankar, India, at the time, perceived the UNSC as a neutral arbiter whereas the Western voices on the table harboured a bias toward Pakistan and exploited India's vulnerability on the issue. "Today it is very clear, in fact not now, it was very clear by 1970s, that taking the Kashmir issue to the UN Security Council was a fundamental error because you are taking it at the court where the judges are all stacked against you. These were Western countries who had a bias towards Pakistan," said Jaishankar while speaking about his book 'Why Bharat Matters'. The external affairs minister speaking further said only if India had been hard-headed and had a "good sense of international politics", the call to knock on the UN's door would not have been taken. He added Article 370 had profound implications not just within the country but also on the country's foreign policy and it took decades to finally abrogate it. “We had a misreading of the world and sanctity of the UN, its impartiality and the Council being neutral arbitrators. We were taken for a ride by countries that had their geopolitical agendas set. As an issue of vulnerability, it was used against us and they continued to use it for decades. Article 370 was not just a call we had to take within the country, but had profound policy implications,” he added. Watch | Article 370 verdict LIVE: India PM Modi says, 'it's a beacon of hope...' on Article 370 Indian SC upholds abrogating Article 370 Jaishankar's statement comes a couple of weeks after the Indian Supreme Court delivered a historic verdict, approving the Union government's 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370. A five-judge Constitution bench, presided by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justices SK Kaul, Sanjeev Khanna, B R Gavai and Surya Kant delivered the judgment on December 11. He added that J&K holds no internal sovereignty after accession to India. (With inputs from agencies)

Ahead of the highly-anticipated Ram Mandir consecration ceremony in the northern Indian city of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh on January 22, a man from Hyderabad has embarked on an 8,000-kilometre padayatra (walk) to the temple. The man, identified as 64-year-old, Challa Srinivas Sastry has taken upon the journey to show his gratitude towards Lord Ram. According to news agency PTI, Sastry is following the Ayodhya-Rameswaram route, mirroring Lord Ram's 'Vanavas' (exile) in reverse. Notably, in Valmiki's Ramayana, Lord Rama was exiled for 14 years alongside Mata Sita and Lakshman, during which the trio travelled a long distance from Ayodhya (UP) to Nasik in Maharashtra, Danadakaranya in Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, and Sri Lanka. Sastry is retracing the steps by carrying gold-plated footwear, made with 'panch dhatu' (five metals) worth Rs 65 lakh ($78,133) for Lord Ram and intends to present the article to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath upon reaching Ayodhya. Sastry had previously donated five silver bricks to the Ram temple. Sastry started the journey on July 20 last year, stopping along the Shiva Lingas established by Lord Ram. The devotee hopes to reach Ayodhya in the next 10 days, having visited important landmarks such as Puri in Odisha, Trimbak in Maharashtra and Dwaraka in Gujarat. "My father participated in 'kar seva' in Ayodhya. He was a strong devotee of Lord Hanuman. His desire was to see the Ram temple built in Ayodhya. As he is no more, I decided to fulfill his desire," Sastry said as quoted by PTI. After the journey, Sastry plans to settle down permanently in Ayodhya by constructing a house in the sacred city. The four men shot dead by militants in the Thoubal district of the northeastern state of Manipur on Monday (Jan 1) were involved in a drug dispute, according to news agency Press Trust of India (PTI). Apart from the four Meitei Pangal men, 18 were injured (five sustained bullet injuries) in the attacks.

"The incident was seen as the fallout of a dispute over money collected through illegal drug trade," the report claimed.

The Revolutionary People's Front (RPF), the political wing of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), accepted that the gunmen belonged to the outfit. RPF added that it had opened an internal inquiry into the incident.

Senior government officials provided a breakdown of the events, explaining that PLA militants entered the minority-dominated Lilong Chingjao area to target a resident known for several narcotics-related charges.

Soon, amid the kerfuffle, about 1,000 villagers descended near the suspect's home, forcing the PLA militants to secure an exit. However, during the escape, they started firing randomly at the crowd, resulting in four deaths and nearly two dozen injuries.

The family of the four men refused to take the bodies on Tuesday (Jan 2) whilst submitting a memorandum to the state government with a list of demands.

Under the memorandum, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Meitei Pangals requested the government to grant permission to form village protection forces in all areas where the Meitei Muslim community reside in the state. Additionally, the committee demanded a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the events of January 1.

As part of the expanding military cooperation, India is set to assist Tanzania in establishing a mechanised infantry battalion. This was part of the conversation between the two countries during the visit of the Chief of Defence Forces of Tanzania, General Jacob John Mkunda to India last month.

During the visit, the Tanzanian military chief toured the Mechanised Infantry Centre and School in Ahmednagar and was accompanied by a 15-member delegation.

He was given insights into diverse facets of mechanised infantry warfare and witnessed live demonstrations that showcased the firepower and mobility of infantry combat vehicles, along with combat tactics and weapons handling.

The Mechanized Infantry Regiment of the Indian Army is equipped with armoured vehicles, seamlessly integrating infantry mobility with the potent firepower and protection of mechanised forces. This capability enables swift troop deployment across the battlefield, highlighting its crucial role in contemporary military operations.

Before he visited Ahmednagar, General Mkunda held discussions in Delhi with Indian Army Chief Manoj Pande and other top officials. The visit comes in the wake of increased defence engagement between India and Tanzania, highlighted by the visit of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan to India in October.

Tanzania's defence minister visited India in August 2022 and February 2023 and the Indian Army chief's visit to the East African country in October 2023 reflected the deepening ties in the defence sector.

The family members of Indian nationals, whose death sentences were commuted by a Qatar court of appeal on Thursday (Dec 28), reacted with caution over the verdict saying that the recent development in the case cannot yet be called a success as the legal battle continues.

The respective families are now moving to the Court of Cassation, which is the highest court of appeal in the Arab country.

So far, six appeal hearings have been held in the case including three in the lower court and three in the court of appeal.

The families are hoping to explore the option of prisoner repatriation to India for the eight former navy sailors.

The Indian government has released a statement saying that it is in "close touch with the legal team, as well as family members, to decide on the next steps".

"We have stood by them since the beginning, and we will continue to extend all consular and legal assistance. We will also continue to take up the matter with Qatari authorities."

“The Emir’s pardon can only be applied after the highest court rules on the judgement. This will likely take another three months before a (plea for) pardon can be filed,” one of the family members of the Indian sailors was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

They further said that the men were present in court, but were not around at the time the verdict was announced.

“They will likely hear from families in their weekly calls or in a meeting with the lawyer and embassy officials in the coming week. They get to make three calls a week,” the relative told The Indian Express.

India waiting for detailed judgment, says MEA

The Indian government on Friday said that it would be discussing the next steps with the family members of the eight men and the legal team.

“The sentences have been reduced but I don't have any additional information to share until we see the detailed judgment. We would urge you again not to engage in speculation. The interests of Indians and their family members is our foremost concern. We will also of course be discussing the next possible steps with the legal team and the family members,” Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday.

The skeletal remains of five members of the same family have been recovered from inside a house in the Chitradurga district of the south Indian state of Karnataka. What makes the development more shocking is that the family was last seen five years ago in July 2019.

The police learnt about the incident on Thursday (Dec 28) through local media, who were informed by a person in the locality. Over two months ago, locals had noticed that the main door was broken and that there had been repeated attempts of ransacking the place. However, the police were not notified until this week.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police found four skeletons, two on beds and two on the floor, in one of the rooms. The fifth skeleton was discovered in the other room.

Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team from Devengere and Scene of Crime Officers (SOCOs) were quickly summoned to the scene and collected evidences as to what had transpired in the house.

India: Another house of horror? Skeletons of 5 family members found in Karnataka home

December marked a significant milestone for Indian aviation history as the country recorded its highest-ever domestic air traffic for a single month, with 13.8 million passengers taking to the skies. This figure represents an impressive 8.4% increase compared to December 2022 and a notable 6.1% surge when compared to the pre-pandemic levels of December 2019. This exceeded the previous peak, which was reached in May of this year with 13.21 million domestic flights.

In December 2023, there were 91,044 flights, marking a modest 3% increase from December 2022 when airlines operated 88,128 departures. In December 2019, the total number of domestic flights across all airlines stood at 94,910, only marginally higher than the figure recorded in 2023.

The number of Indian carriers with an active fleet has decreased over the past year, primarily as a result of problems with three major airlines: Go First ceased operations in May, due to financial difficulties SpiceJet kept the planes grounded and more than 40 IndiGo aircraft remained grounded because of Pratt & Whitney engine problems.

In the past, longer summer breaks didn't bring about as much travel as the December year-end holidays. This is because, in contrast to a larger summer holiday window, when traffic is dispersed across 45 to 60 days rather than 10 days, holiday traffic travels during a shorter holiday window.

Momentum picked up following November's decline

December proved to be a crucial month, with a notable uptick in aviation activity, following a brief halt in November, when the upward trajectory of air traffic momentarily paused even despite Diwali celebrations. This resurgence can be attributed to dynamic economic shifts and strategic promotional fares offered by airlines.

The number of passengers in December 2023 recorded an average of 445,000 passengers per day, marking a significant increase of 22,000 passengers per day compared to the previous month. The boost in air traffic was fuelled by IndiGo's capacity expansion, facilitated by the wet-leasing of 11 additional aircraft. Additionally, the Tata Group contributed to the surge by augmenting capacity across its three airlines.

As the year and month came to an end on a positive note, airlines are preparing for the impending challenges of 2024. Particularly IndiGo may have to ground as many as 40 more aircraft. Another critical aspect under scrutiny is the evolving landscape of COVID-19, especially with the latest variant showing an upward trajectory in cases within neighbouring countries, some of which have granted "visa-free" travel for Indians. The potential impact of New Year celebrations on the COVID-19 case count in India remains a focal point of anticipation. Before worrying about the future, it's time to enjoy the successes of the last year.

‘Light diyas, but don’t...’: Here’s how PM Modi wants India to celebrate Ram temple inauguration

The ongoing construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya reflects a nationwide appeal as its architectural design is influenced by both northern and southern Indian temple styles. Construction materials have been procured from diverse regions of India, such as Rajasthan, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and others.

The inauguration of the Ram temple is scheduled on January 22, and the event is anticipated to witness the presence of key dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. More than 6,000 individuals are expected to participate in the 'Pran Pratistha,' signifying the consecration ceremony of the Ram Mandir.

The Ram Temple showcases a fusion of North and South Indian architectural influences. Diverse construction materials were meticulously selected from various states across India. The primary temple structure is crafted with the distinctive pink sandstone of Bharatpur in Rajasthan, while the intricate woodwork features premium teakwood sourced from Maharashtra's lush forests.

Granite elements incorporated in the temple construction originate from the states of Telangana and Karnataka. The flooring, a vital aspect of the temple's aesthetics, is chosen from Madhya Pradesh. The skilled workers engaged in the construction work hail from different states, showcasing a collaborative effort.

Moreover, the artistic elements such as sandstone carving, were entrusted to talented artisans from Odisha. The woodwork is managed by a company based in Andhra Pradesh with labour from Tamil Nadu, which exemplifies the diverse craftsmanship involved.

Furthermore, the brassware is sourced from Uttar Pradesh and gold detailing from Maharashtra adds intricate details to the temple's grandeur. Notably, 42 bells, essential to the temple's rituals were sourced from Tamil Nadu and transported to Ayodhya, symbolising the harmonious integration of materials and craftsmanship from across India for the Ram Mandir.

India has formally requested Pakistan to hand over Hafiz Saeed, the mastermind behind the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. The notorious figure, who remains a wanted terrorist in India, has continued to operate freely from within Pakistan, even as his son, Talha Saeed, recently announced that he will stand for the upcoming Pakistani general elections.

The request has been, an extradition request from New Delhi to Islamabad. Indian agencies like the NIA have been involved in the case. Hafiz Saeed, the co-founder of the United Nations-listed terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), was the key man behind the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, India's financial capital.

The United States and the European Union have also designated him as an international terrorist. Reflecting the severity of his actions, the U.S. government had, in 2012, offered a substantial $10 million bounty for information leading to the capture of Hafiz Mohammad Saeed.

For India, terrorism originating from territories under Pakistan's control remains a pressing concern in bilateral relations. New Delhi has consistently emphasized the urgent need for Pakistan to take credible, irreversible, and verifiable action to curb cross-border terrorism directed against India. India has also called upon Pakistan to expedite the trial of the Mumbai terror attacks case, providing all relevant evidence to facilitate justice. However, despite the sharing of conclusive evidence, there has been minimal progress in the ongoing trial within Pakistan.

ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) is on a roll following its Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1 missions, the space agency is gearing up for a new year surprise. On January 1, 2024, when the world will be welcoming the new year, ISRO scientists will launch XPoSat. It is India's first polarimetry mission. XPoSAT will take a look at black holes, and other astronomical sources of X-rays.

It is slated for a lift-off at 9:10 am on January 1, 2024. After this, the XPoSAT will be placed in low earth orbit (LEO). As per reports, India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) will take the XPoSAT up into the sky.

XPoSat has two scientific payloads with it. The primary payload is POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-rays). It will measure polarimetry parameters. These are degree and angle of polarization. The measurements will be made in medium X-ray energy range of 8-30 keV.

After being grounded and interrogated by the French authorities, the plane landed in Mumbai on December 26, albeit with 276 passengers. The rest had applied for asylum and were transferred to a special zone in Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport for asylum-seekers.

On Tuesday (Dec 27), 25 Indian passengers from the plane who had stayed back, were freed by a judge, who ordered their release on formal grounds.

As per prosecutors, this was done considering that the head of the border police at France's main Charles de Gaulle airport "had not referred the case" to the judge within the timeframe stipulated by law.

Among the passengers who stayed in France were five minors, who have now been taken into the care of child welfare services.

Indian authorities intensify probe

While the French authorities have seemingly dropped the human trafficking angle, the Indian government is continuing its probe. According to an official at the home ministry, speaking on condition of anonymity, the registration of the chartered flight and “people operating this entire nexus” had been identified.

Notably, passengers of the chartered plane had arrived in UAE at different times and each of them had legal tourist visas for entering Dubai. However, they all congregated at the same place and left for Nicaragua together before the flight was cut short in France.

Currently, the fulcrum of the investigation remains unearthing who facilitated the travel of 303 Indians.
Before their release from the Indian airports, the passengers were questioned by immigration and law enforcement agencies.

The initial interrogations have revealed that some agents (touts) had fixed a deal with the majority of them, charging anywhere between Rs 40 lakh ($48,000) to Rs 1.5 crore ($180,000) to send them illegally to America.

Earlier this week, two touts were arrested by the Gujarat Crime Investigation Department (CID) which is expected to reveal the entire operation of the syndicate.

India: Wife stabs husband in eyes with scissors for demanding tea

The southwestern state of Karnataka in India has been embroiled in a language row after pro-Kannada activists went on a rampage, holding violent protests and demanding that ‘60 per cent Kannada’ be used on all signboards across shops and other establishments,

In the state capital of Bengaluru, activists of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) stormed into businesses and tore down English signage on Wednesday (Dec 27). The protesters, wearing yellow and red scarves (the colours of the Kannada flag) destroyed multiple properties and only stopped after police intervened and arrested a few of the miscreants.

"People from various states are doing business in Bengaluru. But they don't put Kannada nameplates on their shops. They are only putting up the nameplates of their shops in English," said KRV President TN Narayan Gowda.

"If they want to stay back in Bengaluru then they have to put nameplates on their shops in Kannada or else they have to move from Karnataka to other states," he added.

The protest came a day after the Bengaluru municipality (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) passed an order saying it would suspend licenses for shops, hotels and malls if they do not comply with the 60 per cent Kannada rule on signboards by February 28. The guideline states that more than half of a signboard should read in Kannada.
