Worried over mixed results in the growth of digital payments ecosystems, the Indian Finance Ministry plans to extend the incentives on low-value transactions through RuPay Debit Cards and BHIM-UPI, India’s digital payement system, for the third year while nearly doubling the budgetary outlay to attract more players.

The ministry plans to infuse Rs 50 billion during fiscal year 2023-24, up from Rs 26 billion in 2022-23, to compensate for the discontinued “merchant discount rate” (MDR) that was to be collected as transaction charge by the merchants and paid to the acquirer bank.

Under the scheme, for low-volume transactions that use RuPay cards at point-of-sale or in e-commerce, the merchant’s acquirer bank will get 0.4 per cent, capped at Rs 100, as an incentive.

In case of industry programmes that involve use of RuPay cards in insurance, mutual funds, government, education, railways, agriculture, fuel, jewellery, hospitals, telecom, utility payments, and business/personal services, the incentive will be 0.15 per cent of the transaction, capped at Rs 6.

Similarly, for person-to-merchant (P2M) payments that use BHIM-UPI for transactions up to Rs 2,000, the acquirer bank will get 0.25 per cent of the transaction amount as incentive. For industry programmes, the incentive would be 0.15 per cent of the transaction.

The scheme was introduced in fiscal 2021-22 with an outlay of Rs 14.5 billion to offset the lost MDR, which an acquirer bank subsequently shares with the card-issuing bank (issuer bank) and the network operator.

In the case of BHIM-UPI, the acquirer bank shares the MDR with issuer banks as well as the payer’s payment service providers, third party app providers and other system participants.

Digital payment transactions in India have been expanding but the results have been mixed with UPI growing massively in both volume and value terms, up by 82 per cent and 105 per cent respectively, in fiscal 2022-23 over the previous year, while RuPay has been witnessing a sharp decline of 13.7 per cent in volume terms even though it ticked up 4.2 per cent in value terms during the same period.

The mixed results have spurred the ministry to tweak the scheme on RuPay debit card as well as to add UPI Lite, UPI LiteX, UPI Conversational Payments- Hello UPI in app and UPI 123Pay on BHIM-UPI platform with the stipulation that at least 5 per cent of BHIM-UPI P2M transactions be on UPI Lite and UPI LiteX during the last quarter of the scheme.

An ammonia gas leak that happened at an undersea pipeline in India’s Ennore region, North Chennai, has been contained, said Tamil Nadu government authorities in the early hours of Wednesday (Dec 27).

The leak is said to have occurred around 11.45 pm (local time) Tuesday and it led to the stench of ammonia spreading in the adjoining areas, which includes multiple petrochemical industries and densely populated residential areas.

More than 34 people are said to have been hospitalised after the gas leak occurred around the midnight hour, with the pungent ammonia odour causing eye irritation, a burning sensation in the throat, breathing difficulties, and other issues.&nbsp;

This facility is involved in the large-scale manufacture of Ammonium Phosphate Potash Sulphate (APPS), with an annual output of almost four lakh tonnes.

The raw material for making ammonia, being a major constituent of APPS, is brought in via ships and transported through a 2.5km long undersea pipeline that leads to the facility.

Estimates say that 3000-8000 tonnes of ammonia is pumped to the factory every month.&nbsp;

It was around 12.45 am on Wednesday that the facility notified the relevant authorities regarding the gas leakage. In the following hours, police and ambulances were mobilised.

At 3.33 am, a top Tamil Nadu Police official Vijaykumar posted on X that the situation had been controlled.

&nbsp;"No need to panic. stabilised. No more gas (ammonia) leak at Ennore. People reassured and are back home. Medical and police teams present."

Speaking to WION, a local resident at Ernavur locality, near Ennore, said that the strong stench of ammonia was observed around midnight hour and led to suspicion of a leak.

He added that his residential area near the coast does not experience such a strong stench, as they are at a considerable distance from the factories in the area.&nbsp;

As on Wednesday morning, he said that the ammonia stench was negligible in his locality when compared to the midnight hour.&nbsp;

Initial reports suggest that this mishap occurred in the run-up to the unloading of ammonia from the ship and not during the actual unloading of the chemical.

In order to transfer ammonia in liquid condition, it is said to be maintained at minus 330 degrees Celsius. At least 36 hours prior to the transfer of ammonia from the ships, pre-cooling of the undersea pipeline is carried out to pump ammonia in liquid form and finally into the storage tank within the factory.

In a statement, Coromandel International said that they noticed the abnormality on Wednesday at 11.30 pm in the ammonia-loading subsea pipeline near shoreside, outside the plant premises.

"Our Standard Operating Procedure activated immediately, and we have isolated the ammonia system facility and brought the situation to normalcy in the shortest time," read the statement.&nbsp;

During the process, a few members of the local community expressed discomfort and were given medical attention immediately. All are safe and normalcy was restored, the firm said.

"We have informed relevant authorities about the incident. Coromandel has always adhered to the highest safety standards and emergency response system" said the firm, in a statement authorised by Amir Alvi, President &amp; Head, Manufacturing (Fertilizer) &amp; Supply Chain, Coromandel International Limited.

India: North Chennai ammonia leak contained, traced to undersea pipeline, say authorities

The Indian security forces near the border areas with Pakistan have been engaged in a rather unconventional battle throughout the year. The drug lords sitting in Pakistan have been using drones to fuel the drug crisis in the northern Indian state of Punjab.&nbsp;

Border Security Force (BSF) tasked with guarding the fence&nbsp;had intercepted as many as 90 drones from Pakistan so far in 2023, according to a Guardian report. The drones, some known as hexacopters, can measure up to eight feet wide and have high-resolution cameras attached to them for manoeuvrability.&nbsp;

Most of the drones were captured carrying consignments of opium and heroin, likely to have been manufactured in Afghanistan. The drugs were often carried in small sacks or Coca-Cola bottles.&nbsp;Apart from drug drones, some carry weapons, including pistols and Chinese-made assault rifles.

Smuggling across Pakistan-India border has been going on for decades but since the first drone was spotted in Punjab in 2019, the menace of drone-drugs has increased exponentially. According to BSF, drones are responsible for 60 per cent of the drug-smuggling in the Indian state in 2023.

<h2>A difficult task</h2>

The challenge is increasing for security agencies as the drone technology evolves. Previously, drones could be detected through noise or the visibility of their light. However, in recent month, drone models that fly as high as&nbsp;one km and produce little to no noise have made the task difficult for agencies.&nbsp;

“We just used to be focused on land, but this aerial thing is a new domain for us and it is indeed a challenge.&nbsp;But I believe we will be able to contain this drone menace by next year," said&nbsp;Atul Fulzele, the inspector general of BSF in Punjab.

As early as this week on Monday (Dec 25), BSF thwarted a smuggling attempt in Amritsar's Ranian village. The BSF troops caught the drone and seized&nbsp;434 gm&nbsp;of heroin wrapped with adhesive tape.&nbsp;

"On 25 December 2023, during morning hours, on specific information of BSF regarding smuggling through a drone on the outskirts of Village - Ranian &amp; Rear Kakkar, District - Amritsar, an operation was planned," BSF stated in a post.

The BSF has implemented a three-pronged strategy in the face of the crisis which includes&nbsp;curtailing the drug supply, generating awareness against drug abuse whilst empowering the youth with skills to channelise their energies, instead of snorting drugs.&nbsp;

India: Borders troops on toes against hordes of drug-carrying drones from Pakistan

The Indian Navy on Monday (Dec 25) said that MV Chem Pluto, carrying 21 Indians and one Vietnamese crew, which was earlier reported as attacked by a suspected drone on Saturday (Dec 23), reached Mumbai and was safely anchored at Outer Anchorage off India's financial capital.

On its arrival, the Indian Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team inspected the vessel to make a preliminary assessment of the type and nature of the attack.

"Analysis of the area of attack and debris found on the ship points towards a drone attack. However, further forensic and technical analysis will be required to establish the vector of attack, including type and amount of explosive used," the Indian Navy said in a statement.

"A Joint Investigation by various agencies has commenced on completion of the analysis by the Navy's Explosive Ordnance Team," the statement further added.

MV Chem Pluto has been cleared for further operation by her company-in-charge in Mumbai. The ship is scheduled to undergo mandatory checks by the various inspecting authorities before undertaking Ship to Ship (STS) transfer of cargo. This is likely to be followed by docking and repairs of the damaged portion of MV Chem Pluto, the Indian Navy said.

MV Chem Pluto: Indian Navy deploys three warships in Arabian Sea to counter attacks, launches probe

The airplane with around 300 Indian passengers on board detained near Paris over suspicions of human trafficking landed in Mumbai, India, on Tuesday&nbsp; (Dec 26) at 4 am.

"The plane, which had been grounded since Thursday, departed shortly after 14:30 pm (local time),” BFM TV, a French news broadcast television and radio network, reported.

However, of the 303 Indian passengers, only 276 have likely returned, while the rest have applied for asylum and have been transferred to a special zone in Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport for asylum-seekers.

The flight that took off from Dubai, UAE, carrying 303 passengers, and was headed to Nicaragua, was grounded at the Vatry airport, 150 km east of Paris, on Thursday (Dec 21).

The French authorities on Sunday gave a go-ahead to the Airbus A340 to resume its journey after questioning the passengers for two days.

The local prefecture, on Monday, confirmed that the plane would indeed take off "but not before noon".

As per the Marne prefecture, the plane had 276 passengers on board. Out of those 25, including two minors, applied for asylum and were still on French soil.

Two others were brought before a judge on Monday and were released and placed on assisted witness status, news agency PTI reported citing BFM TV reports.

Earlier, the airplane was scheduled to depart around 10 in the morning.

However, because some people expressed their wish to stay on French soil and did not want to go back to their country of origin, the departure was delayed, according to local media reports.

#WATCH | Maharashtra | Plane with Indian passengers that was grounded in France for four days over suspected human trafficking arrived in Mumbai, earlier today (Outside visuals from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport) pic.twitter.com/OIMPO0c4Hx — ANI (@ANI) December 26, 2023 × The French authorities on Sunday gave a go-ahead to the Airbus A340 to resume its journey after questioning the passengers for two days. Out of those 25, including two minors, applied for asylum and were still on French soil. Two others were brought before a judge on Monday and were released and placed on assisted witness status, news agency PTI reported citing BFM TV reports. As the curtain falls on 2023, India's diplomatic endeavours have been marked by a series of global engagements, strategic moves and some challenges. On a scale of 10, this was the year when India strived to get 20, and it was able to score most of the points with high ambition and mega gatherings. Prime leaders of the world visited Delhi and there was not a dull day in diplomacy. Here's a comprehensive look at the key highlights that shaped India's diplomatic landscape: G20 Summit: Gathering of top Leaders in Delhi In September, the Delhi G20 Summit emerged as a pivotal moment, bringing together leaders from around the world. It was the biggest diplomatic event of not only the year but decades. The joint statement issued at the summit underscored a collective commitment to addressing global challenges through cooperation. India's role as the host showcased its growing influence and commitment to fostering international collaboration. It's time for Africa: G20 Summit highlights India's pan-Africa vision India's pitch and formal membership for the African Union during the Delhi G20 summit showcased the focus increasing on the continent which will be driving growth in the future. Among other things, the Delhi G20 summit had a firm imprint of giving Africa a greater voice in global governance. Visits by Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Kenya President William Ruto further underscored India's commitment to deepening ties with the African continent. India has been backing Africa at the reformed United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Watch | WION Rewind India's moments of glory: World comes to India for G20 summit × PM's global tours: Enhancing bilateral ties Prime Minister Modi's many foreign visits have put focus on firming up bilateral ties. From a state visit to the United States being the guest of honour at Bastille Day in Paris, attending the G7 Hiroshima Summit in Japan, and a bilateral visit to Australia, these engagements underscored India's commitment to building and fortifying strategic partnerships. First responder on the global stage: From Turkey to Sri Lanka India, traditionally focused on its extended neighbourhood, stepped beyond it in 2023. Operation Dost saw Indian relief teams rushing to Turkey and Syria in the aftermath of deadly earthquakes as Delhi pitched for global humanitarian efforts. In Sri Lanka's economic crisis, India played a crucial role, providing assistance worth a staggering $4 billion. UN reforms: India's call for a seat at the table 2023 saw a milestone, as India became the most populous nation on the planet. But a country, representing one-sixth of global humanity, is not present at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) high table. India intensified its pitch for United Nations reforms. The UNGA session witnessed a chorus of countries advocating for a reshaping of the global body. However, achieving consensus, especially among the permanent five, remained a formidable challenge. Global South outreach: Virtual summits and solidarity India reached out to the Global South through virtual summits and a series of announcements, cementing its role as a bridge between nations facing common challenges. These efforts aimed to foster collaboration on issues ranging from capacity building to speaking in one voice on many issues. India's SCO chairmanship: Expanding footprints India, as the SCO Summit chair, hosted the summit virtually. Key outcomes included, Iran joining the grouping, while Belarus's membership process was accelerated. In Goa, the SCO foreign ministers' meeting witnessed a rare visit by the Pakistani foreign minister to India even as ties remain frozen. Pakistan FM Bilawal Bhutto travelled from Karachi to Goa, leaving without a breakthrough with India but receiving a namaste from India's EAM Dr S Jaishankar. New Horizons: New Indian embassies India inaugurated new embassies in Paraguay and Lithuania, activated its consulate in Seattle, and declared plans for a mission in Latvia. This expansion signifies a broader outreach and engagement with these countries for diplomatic, economic, and cultural purposes. Diaspora engagement During the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, India invited Guyana President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi. Both are Indian-origin global leaders. PM, EAM, and ministers, during foreign visits, engaged with the diaspora. India has approximately 33 million strong diaspora, from heads of states to leaders of multinational corporations, to blue-collar workers in West Asia. Khalistani Concerns: Navigating delicate terrains Western countries were seen giving public space to Khalistani extremism and anti-India rhetoric. This was particularly seen in the US and Canada, with India-listed terrorist, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun threatening Air India flights and the Indian Parliament. The Indian consulate in San Francisco was vandalised even as Khalistanis in Canada issued posters against Indian diplomats. Allegations linking India to the murder of Khalistanis cast a shadow on Delhi's ties with Ottawa even as Washington was seen maturely handling it. How Nikhil Gupta's case goes forward, will be watched closely. Trudeau Talks: Diplomatic fallout with Canada Prime Minister Trudeau's comments in the Canadian Parliament linking India to the death of a Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar strained India-Canada relations. The expulsion of 40 Canadian diplomats underscored India's displeasure with what Delhi saw as interference by them. Red Sea Crisis: Economic security under threat The Red Sea crisis escalated with attacks on vessels, namely MV Chem Pluto and MV Sai Baba, bound for India. MV Chem Pluto was targeted 200 nautical miles off the Gujarat coast, while the US attributed the MV Sai Baba attack to Houthis in the Southern Red Sea, a claim rejected by them. These incidents pose a threat to India's economic security. Indian Navy's assets are in the region, patrolling it and ensuring the safety of merchant shipping. China Challenge: Ties remain frozen While border crisis talks with China continued, diplomatic ties remained icy. Chinese President Xi Jinping, a BRICS counterpart, was notably absent from both the Delhi G20 Summit and the subsequent virtual G20 Summit in November. China's issuance of a controversial political map, claiming territories of multiple countries, drew swift condemnation, led by India, with approximately 10 nations expressing concerns over Beijing's provocative actions. Israel-Hamas Conflict: Balancing act in the Middle East India condemned terror attacks by Hamas in Israel in October, sent aid to Gaza as Israel launched its counter-offensive, and supported a two-state solution while emphasising dialogue and diplomacy during the Israel-Hamas conflict. Indian PM Modi spoke to the Israeli PM and a host of Arab leaders on the issue. A scheduled visit by Arab-Islamic Foreign Ministers to Delhi could not materialise due to scheduling issues on their end. Indians in Qatar's custody Eight former Indian Navy personnel are in Qatari custody, facing a death penalty announcement. The case is in court, with an accepted appeal, and the next hearing is scheduled for December 28. PM Modi and the Qatari Amir had an informal conversation on the sidelines of the COP Climate summit in Dubai, though the readouts do not confirm the discussion on this issue. The case is being followed closely and is a test case for diplomacy. Crisis evacuations In a year marked by crises, India executed Operation Kaveri, akin to the previous year's Operation Ganga, evacuating nationals from war-torn Sudan. Under Operation Kaveri, the Indian Government successfully evacuated a total of 4,097 individuals stranded in Sudan. Among these, 3,961 were Indian nationals, while 136 were foreign nationals. In a year marked by diplomatic highs and lows, India stood resilient, navigating global challenges while embracing opportunities for collaboration and growth. As the world looks ahead to 2024, India's diplomatic course remains a dynamic force on the international stage.

The holy city of Ayodhya in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is gearing up for the grand inauguration of the Ram Mandir.

The railway station of the city is one of the many places undergoing a major revamp with features like refurbished platforms, new signboards, escalators, and lifts ready to be installed.

As per news agency ANI, murals of Lord Ram will also be painted on the walls of the station.

PM Modi is set to arrive in&nbsp;the temple town on Dec 30 ahead of the consecration ceremony scheduled to take place next month.

"We are here for the first time. It seems we have arrived at an airport and not a railway station. This station not only has modern amenities but also a touch of Hindu mythology," news agency ANI quoted Purshottam, a tourist from Delhi as saying.

Ramnarayan Das Ji Maharaj, a visiting seer in Ayodhya, too, said that the remodelled and revamped railway station has the resources to extend top-class services to passengers and visitors.

"It looks gorgeous with a new design. Lord Ram, too, wished for the station to be revamped so well that devotees don't run into any problems visiting the grand temple for the consecration ceremony," he said.

Swami Sai Prasad Saraswati, a visiting seer from Thiruvananthapuram, said, "Ayodhya is beautiful and people are arriving in the city in droves ahead of the consecration ceremony."

<h2>Redevelopment carried out in two phases</h2>

The refurbishment is being carried out in two phases. The first phase is near finishing and will see the development of the platform areas.

Whereas the second phase will oversee the construction of the new station building equipped with more restrooms, dormitories, ticketing and circulating areas, among others.&nbsp;

The district magistrate of Ayodhya, Nitish Kumar, released a statement saying that the railway station has a circulation capacity of about 50,000-60,000 people and work on the second phase will begin soon.

"We are carrying out the revamp of the railway station in a manner as to make it resemble the facade of Ram Temple. It would also reflect the historical significance of Ayodhya. While it would resemble a temple from the outside, it would be equipped with the latest technology for the ease of passengers. It already has a circulation capacity of 50,000-60,000 people and we are only into Phase 1 of the project. Work in the second phase will begin soon," news agency ANI quoted him as saying.

Aditya-L1, India's first mission to study the Sun, is set to conduct a complex manoeuvre that will insert it into the halo orbit around Lagrange Point 1 (L1) - considered to be the most significant of the Lagrangian points for observation of the Sun. The insertion into L1, a point of gravitation equilibrium between the Earth and the Sun, is a critical phase of the mission that requires precise navigation and control. According to scientists, the meticulous process involves ensuring that the spacecraft maintains its trajectory to successfully enter the halo orbit. Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman Dr S Somnath last week reiterated that the mission would enter the L1 point on January 6. “Aditya L1 will enter the L1 point on January 6. That is what is expected. Exact time will be announced at appropriate time,” said Somnath. “When it reaches the L1 point, we have to fire the engine once again so that it does not go further. It will go to that point, and once it reaches that point, it will rotate around it and will be trapped at L1,” he added. Notably, once Aditya-L1 is placed in the specific spot, it will remain there for the next five years, gathering data which is important not only for India but for the entire world as well. An Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson, on Monday (Dec 25) rejected the Pentagon’s claim of Iran attacking&nbsp;a chemical ship off India coast&nbsp;as “baseless”. This comes after the&nbsp; United States military reportedly accused Iran of&nbsp;drone attack on the Japanese-owned “Israel-affiliated” chemical tanker MV Chem Pluto, off the coast of India.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Baseless’</h2>

“These repetitive accusations are rejected as baseless,” Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said at a briefing, adding that Washington should instead face accusations for its role in Israel’s war on Gaza.

He added, “Such claims are aimed at projecting, distracting public attention, and covering up for the full support of the American government for the crimes of the Zionist regime (Israel) in Gaza.”&nbsp;

<h2>US military's accusations against Iran</h2>

Pentagon, speaking on the incident told WION that the drone was “fired from Iran.” Notably, it is the first time that Washington&nbsp;directly accused Tehran of targeting ships.&nbsp;

The attack, as per US officials, occurred at approximately 10:00 am &nbsp;(local time) in the Indian Ocean, 200 nautical miles off India's Gujarat coast.

It said that the “motor vessel CHEM PLUTO, a Liberia-flagged, Japanese-owned, and Netherlands-operated chemical tanker” was hit by “a one-way attack drone fired from Iran.”

In a statement to WION, the Pentagon said “No U.S. Navy vessels were in the vicinity. U.S. Naval Forces Central Command remains in communication with the vessel as it continues toward a destination in India.”&nbsp;

It added, “This is the seventh Iranian attack on commercial shipping since 2021.”&nbsp;

The recent attack off the Indian coast came amid a flurry of attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea by the Yemen-based Iran-backed Houthi rebels amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

The militant group had warned that they would target all ships heading to Israel, regardless of their nationality, and warned international shipping companies against dealing in Israeli ports.&nbsp;

<h2>Indian Navy&nbsp;to investigate incident</h2>

The Indian Navy said that it responded to a request for assistance by dispatching an aircraft and a warship to ensure the safety of the involved ship and its crew. India's political party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has invited trouble after one of its MPs Dayanidhi Maran's video, which the party claims is old, went viral on social media.

In the video, Maran allegedly said that the Hindi-speaking people who hail from the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar construct houses, clean roads and toilets in Tamil Nadu, after learning Tamil.&nbsp;

"Only because they (people here) studied English, today they earn fat salaries in IT companies. They say 'Hindi Hindi'. You know well who build buildings. Those who study only Hindi in Bihar build houses for us in Tamil Nadu, sweep roads and clean toilets," he said in the video that took the internet by storm.

He then went on to cite the example of Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who is a native of Tamil Nadu saying that had he learnt only Hindi language, he would have ended up being employed in the construction sector as a worker.

India logs 656 new COVID-19 cases, number of active cases rises to 3,742; Kerala reports one death

Recently, a surge in the number of new COVID subvariant JN.1 in India has raised concerns among people. Amidst this, doctors from New Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have advised people to not panic and rather remain vigilant.

"People are getting infected by the new sub-variant of COVID-JN.1 in many states of the country. The symptoms of the patients are mild. Therefore, there is no need to panic but the need to remain alert," Dr Neeraj Nischal said.

Dr Nischal, who is an Additional Professor in the Department of Medicine at AIIMS Delhi, said, "We have been saying this type of ripple will keep on happening. Even during the first and second waves, we predicted that this virus would mutate further and the stage would come where it would become more infectious but at the same time cause less mortality or morbidity."

"So this is, you can say, a fight between the viruses in human beings who are also trying to survive. People are becoming infected but at the same time, it's not causing the problem that its predecessors, like the delta variant, caused," said the doctor.

"The important thing is that we are more aware of this virus and that we know how to deal with it. So if you see cases increasing, that shows that our surveillance system is in place, and we can pick up any new surge or any new variant that is coming into our society. So this should not be a cause for panic. This only shows how well we are prepared now and I think we should be able to handle this in a good way," he added.

Dr Nischal further said, "From the data that is emerging, the new subvariant is not very different from omicron. We are looking into whether the virus is causing similar types of symptoms like coughing, cold, sneezing, fever, and body aches."

<h2>Doctors probing intensity of infection</h2>

The doctors further said that they were probing if the subvariant was causing serious lung damage, if it was generating the need for oxygen requirements or if the patients needed hospitalisation.

"There are certain pockets in the country where we are witnessing cases, but that cannot be generalised for the country. So it's good. We have a good surveillance system in place and we can contain this disease and that's the most important thing," added the doctor.

"I will not say that we are seeing an increased number of COVID cases in our OPD it's not like that. We do witness a lot of common cold and flu patients this season. So this is a generalised type of respiratory infection that happens during the winter so there is nothing new that we are witnessing at the moment," he said.

"I won't be saying that we are witnessing an increased number of cases or something serious about patients. No, it's the routine cases that we see every winter. That's what we are witnessing now," he added.

Even during the first and second waves, we predicted that this virus would mutate further and the stage would come where it would become more infectious but at the same time cause less mortality or morbidity." "So this is, you can say, a fight between the viruses in human beings who are also trying to survive. We are looking into whether the virus is causing similar types of symptoms like coughing, cold, sneezing, fever, and body aches." Also read: Russia bars anti-war candidate Yekaterina Duntsova from presidential ballot Doctors probing intensity of infection The doctors further said that they were probing if the subvariant was causing serious lung damage, if it was generating the need for oxygen requirements or if the patients needed hospitalisation. (With inputs from agencies)

In a significant move to enhance international collaboration to combat maritime threats, the Djibouti Code of Conduct (DCOC)/Jeddah Amendment is poised to deploy an International Liaison Officer (ILO) to India's Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR).

Captain Rohit Bajpai, director of the Gurugram-based Naval institution, speaking to WIONs diplomatic correspondent, Sidhant Sibal, said, "They are looking to sending one of their ILOs to us; we have invited." Captain Bajpai emphasised the prospect of collaborative learning, with the DCOC ILO gaining valuable insights from IFC-IOR. "If the ILO of the DCOC comes, he may learn with us, sit with us, understand and thereafter go back and impart his learnings to his country. We are in very much touch with DCOC," he explained. Established in January 2009, the DCOC primarily focuses on countering piracy and armed robbery in the Western Indian Ocean Region, the Gulf of Aden, and the Red Sea. With the 2017 Jeddah Amendment, the DCOC expanded its purview to combat illegal maritime activities such as illegal fishing, human trafficking, and smuggling. The group consists of 18 member countries, predominantly from Arab and Eastern African regions, with India becoming an observer member in August 2020. Highlighting the ongoing collaboration, Captain Bajpai stated, "Presently, we have 12 ILOs; soon, one more ILO is going to join us from Bangladesh, maybe early in January. We have a vision of having 40 ILOs in this centre and progressing towards that." Established in December 2018, this year the institution marks its fifth anniversary. To date, the centre has hosted ILOs from 12 nations viz. Australia, France, Italy, Japan, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The navy institution had played a key role in providing information during the recent hijacked vessel MV Ruen case. Also read | French President Emmanuel Macron invited to be chief guest at Republic Day 2024 Full interview: Sidhant Sibal: If you can talk about what this body does? Captain Rohit Bajpai: The vision of the government of India was to set up a centre to look for maritime security and safety in the IOR through a collaborative effort. We realised that there's no one agency or organisation which has enough resources or manpower to monitor such a vast area. It was premised on collaboration. That is how we set out, to understand the Indian Ocean region, fuse that information from various sources and after putting out to the maritime community for the safety and security in the region. Sidhant Sibal: There are officers from various countries, how many countries are involved and is there any plan to invite more countries? Captain Rohit Bajpai: Absolutely, what we say is we have international liaison officers who are the main strength, the pillar. Presently we have 12 ILOs, both from the regional countries and beyond the region. They bring with them unique perspectives from their individual area. And when all come together, sit at the table, when we fuse that information, then we get a better understanding of the maritime domain and entire region. Presently we have 12 ILOs, soon one more ILO is going to join us from Bangladesh, maybe early in January. We have a vision of having 40 ILOs in this centre and progressing towards that. Sidhant Sibal: Challenges in the Indian Ocean? How are we tackling these issues with this organisation? Captain Rohit Bajpai: Challenges are plenty in the IOR because of the importance of the Indian Ocean region. With importance comes challenges -- host of challenges. The priority of challenges may be different for different countries. We are primarily monitoring 5 clusters of challenges: piracy, armed robbery, contraband smuggling, illegal fishing and maritime incidents. There are many challenges, which we club under categories, thereafter our ILOs monitor that. Now the main challenge for small island nations is drug trafficking, which is affecting the youth. In countries like Mauritius and Seychelles, it is high on priority. Illegal fishing is a big mess which is happening in our region. Very recently situation in the western side of the region, that is catching our eye, we analyse that information. Threats are similar for everybody, priorities keep on changing, and when something happens, we focus on that. Sidhant Sibal: How is this organisation planning to expand, it has a major weight in the region, if you can talk about the future of this organisation? Captain Rohit Bajpai: We believe in trust, it's good to know that the environment is also understanding what we are doing here. We like to admit and take a lot of pride, that we have achieved a lot in these five years. In the last 2-3 years, the number of partnerships we are doing, the engagement we had with international partners is increasing phenomenally. More and more regions are looking at us, to assist, help them, to collaborate. Our future of course, whatever we have set to achieve, we have achieved, however, that is not the end. The organisation has to grow. We have a full roadmap that we want to achieve in the next 5 years and thereafter. Sidhant Sibal: Are you planning to engage with the African Countries as well? Captain Rohit Bajpai: Absolutely, the Djibouti Code of Conduct /Jeddah Amendment, the eastern African countries that is the 21 countries. We very recently interacted with them. We are in constant dialogue; they are in the process of developing their standard operating procedure for their own information-sharing network. They called us, we were part of their institutionalisation of the SOPs, so that has been done. Now they are looking to sending one of their ILOs to us, which we have invited. If ILO of the DCOC comes, he may learn with us, sit with us, understand and thereafter go back and impart his learnings to his country. We are in very much touch with DCOC. We are helping them build an information centre. Sidhant Sibal: There's no African ILO so far but there is a plan to get an African ILO very soon? Captain Rohit Bajpai: Absolutely, we have ILOs from the island nations i.e. Seychelles and Mauritius but we have invited them. Most probably one of the East African countries will send ILO here soon.

In a major development, the government in the western Indian state of Gujarat on Friday authorised that individuals employed in the GIFT city (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City), as well as visitors, will be able to consume alcohol. The announcement assumes importance as Gujarat has been a dry state since its formulation in 1960. According to the notification, the identified stakeholders will be given a 'Liquor Access Permit" enabling them to consume liquor in hotels, restaurants, clubs offering “Wine and Dine” within the GIFT City. "Apart from this, a provision has been made to allow authorised visitors of each company to consume liquor in such hotels/restaurants/clubs having temporary permits in the presence of permanent employees of that company," read the notification. Additionally, hotels, restaurants and clubs located or coming to GIFT City will be able to obtain the FL3 license, required to serve alcohol. "The whole process Narcotics and Excise Department, State of Gujarat will carry out supervision and control over the import, storage and serving of liquor by FL3 licensed hotels, restaurants and clubs located in GIFT City area," the notification further read. Earlier this month, PM Modi visited the city and addressed an investment conference to breathe life into the project. A few weeks later, the state authorities lifted the prohibition policy. Indian captain KL Rahul praised his group of young players after Sanju Samson hit a maiden international century and set up a series-deciding win for India against South Africa in the third one-day international in Paarl on Thursday.

Samson made 108 in an Indian total of 296 for eight at Boland Park.&nbsp;

South African captain Aiden Markram's decision to send India in to bat on a slow pitch on a hot afternoon backfired as the hosts were bowled out for 218 in reply.

India arrived in South Africa without most of the players who took the country to the World Cup final last month. But they won two of the three matches in convincing fashion.

"It's a really young group of players," Rahul said at the post-match presentation. "They have played a lot of cricket but not at international level.&nbsp;

"The message was to let them adjust to international cricket and let them get used to the pressure. Have fun initially and after a few games start expecting things from them."

Left-arm opening bowler Arshdeep Singh rose to the challenge spectacularly. He took 10 wickets in the series, including four for 30 on Thursday, and was named player of the series.

South Africa were well-placed when Tony de Zorzi (87) and Markram (36) put on 65 for the third wicket to take the total to 141 in the 26th over.&nbsp;

But the innings fell away when Markram gloved an attempted reverse sweep off Washington Sundar to wicketkeeper Rahul and De Zorzi was leg before wicket to Arshdeep 20 runs later.

Former international players in the commentary box were surprised at Markram's decision to bowl first but Markram said he didn't believe it influenced the result.&nbsp;

"We were good in small patches," he said. "I still don't think the surface changed much."

Samson summed up the conditions well, batting patiently as stroke-making became challenging when the two white balls lost their hardness.

Samson and Tilak Varma (52) took 88 balls to post a fifty partnership for the fourth wicket but they picked up the pace and eventually added 116 off 136 balls.

Samson made his runs off 114 balls with six fours and three sixes.

The foundation laid by Samson and Varma enabled India's lower-order batsmen to score rapidly towards the end of the innings, with 51 runs scored off the last five overs.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday (Dec 20) said that there has been a 'tonal shift' from India since an Indian government employee was accused by the United States of assigning an individual with the task of hiring an assassin to kill separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

Speaking in an interview with CBC, Trudeau said that there was an understanding that "they can't bluster their way through this".

As per Trudeau, some unidentified Indian agents were involved in plotting the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June in Canada. The claim has been outrightly rejected by the Indian government and they have demanded evidence from Ottawa.

"I think there is a beginning of an understanding that they can't bluster their way through this and there is an openness to collaborating in a way that perhaps they were less open before," said Trudeau, speaking in an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

Trudeau further added that Canada is not willing to fight with India even though China has continued to assert its dominance in the Indo-Pacific region.

"We don't want to be in a situation of having a fight with India right now over this. We want to be working on that trade deal. We want to be advancing the Indo-Pacific strategy," Trudeau said.

‘Attacks against Canada won’t make problem go away’, says Trudeau, cites 'tonal shift' on India’s part

Mukesh Aghi, President &amp; CEO of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), has underscored the flourishing ties between the United States and India, shedding light on "bullish" sentiments of US investors on India. Speaking to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Aghi stated, " relationship has gone in a very positive direction, in a win-win fashion for both countries. you have to understand that the relationship is deep, much broader, and much more strategic between India and the United States"

Highlighting the changing dynamics of global supply chains, Aghi noted, "US companies are looking at de-risking supply chain from China and India becomes a primary source from their perspective." Highlighting the significant participation of US companies in Vibrant Gujarat in January, Aghi projected a continued growth in investments, highlighting, "You have US companies creating almost three and a half million jobs in India which are High Tech, High End paying jobs."

He also spoke on President Biden not being able to attend India's Republic Day, the Nikhil Gupta case etc.

Here's the full interview.

WION: My first question to you is how do you see the India-US relationship if you can sum up how this year has been?

Mukesh Aghi: Well, I think the relationship has gone in a very positive direction, in a win-win fashion for both countries. If you look at it from a geopolitical perspective, India and the USA are aligned vis a vis China. When you look at it from an economic perspective, the trade has gone up almost $200 billion. When you look at it from a technology perspective, what we're seeing is the exports of Indian IT services and basically app platforms have gone up. And also, we've seen some critical technologies moving into India, specifically in the manufacturing arena. And then finally people to people, we have around 5 million Indian Americans in the US and they seem to work very positively building a very strong partnership between the two countries. So, I think the year 2023 shows how it has gone up as compared to the last 40-50 years.&nbsp;

WION: How much are the American investors, bullish on the India growth story?

Mukesh Aghi: Oh, very much, if you look at the largest FDI investors in India, are the US companies coming directly or to Singapore or to other countries? But more importantly, if you look at the last week, the FII investment went up almost by $15 billion. You have US companies creating almost three and a half million jobs in India which are high-tech, High End paying jobs. So the other factor which makes a very big difference, US companies are looking at de-risking the supply chain from China and India becomes a primary source from their perspective.

WION: Sir we know that India had invited the US President Joe Biden to be the chief guest on Republic Day Parade. Now that's not happening. We also saw the announcement by the US Ambassador Garcetti that India has extended the invite. Any reason you think that the visit got cancelled? The US president could not make it to the grand show that we see every year at the Kartavya Path.

Mukesh Aghi: Well, I think President Biden would have loved to come for the Republic Day parade, but you have to understand multiple factors. One is you have the State of the Union speech and trying to juggle that which is also again in the third week of January, and that becomes a challenging aspect. Second, you are going into the election mode. In the US that also becomes challenging. And then the crisis, which is taking place both in Ukraine and also in Gaza, basically binds the president to be here domestically, rather than travelling to a far distant geography such as India. I don't think there is any kind of intention or any kind of I would say lack of respect but it is more about trying to work the schedule out and I think the QUAD Summit has been postponed to a later date. So I think President Biden will come to India once we have been able to drive the schedule between the two countries, and also the remaining QUAD leaders.

WION: The relationship has grown leaps and bounds, but there are certain thorny issues as well. There are Khalistani extremists in the US that are troubling New Delhi and then there is the Nikhil Gupta case as well. Do you think that the Americans could have handled the Nikhil Gupta case better?

Mukesh Aghi: Well, you have to understand that the relationship is deep, much broader, and much more strategic between India and the United States. More important is there is maturity on both sides. The US respects India's decision on the purchase of Russian oil. Basically, the US accepted that and moved on. So, I believe there's maturity on both sides to be able to respect each other's positions and differences. In the case of Gupta, I think we have to understand the Justice Department functions very, very independently of the administration, especially in the southern district of New York State. And if you look, they have indicted President Biden's son. From that perspective, I think the position of the Justice Department does not reflect the position of the administration, which is focused on building the relationship and I believe that there's enough maturity on both sides, that the administration doesn't come out swinging at India in any manner, but basically saying that India is cooperating in finding a cause of this issue and I believe that they'll be able to solve this one out.

WION: Sir I believe that Vibrant Gujarat will see a lot of American investors' participation, perhaps your view of Vibrant Gujarat that happens in Gujarat, in the month of January in a few weeks from now?

Mukesh Aghi: Yeah, so we are leading a delegation of over 50 companies for Vibrant Gujarat. You know, this is one of the pioneering investment events which started in Gujarat and other states copied, it is an area to explore more &amp; more investment in Gujarat. &nbsp;So, what we will be looking at is more contact with the administrations including the Prime Minister in Gujarat. So, as I said earlier, the interest in India, and the investment in India from a US company continues to grow both from a de-risking from China and from market opportunity. So it is an event in which you will see a lot of US companies participating in the middle of January in Gujarat itself.

WION: Sir, my last question to you is, it's just not directly related to the India-US relationship but to the Red Sea situation that has implications on the global oil prices and the trade as well. What's your view? How do you see the crisis impacting the global economic sphere and of course, the crude oil prices?

Mukesh Aghi: So, I think it does impact the supply chain. When you have, let's say, a ship going from the Middle East, all the way down to Europe, normally through the Red Sea it takes 21 days. Now when you go around Africa and down to Europe, it'll take 42 days. The implications are multiple. One is you have containers basically being occupied but the goods are an extra 20-plus days, so the efficiency goes down, the cost goes up, and the insurance goes up. And when you look at it from an India perspective, India exports rice to other parts of Europe. It has an impact of 10% to 15% on the export side. It is impacting the oil, Indian oil which is coming from Russia will be impacted, from a price point perspective, from a logistic point perspective. So, it is disruptive. And we have seen the impact of that not only just on food prices going up, but oil prices going up in the United States and Europe. So, the disruption in the Red Sea will impact the food prices, the oil prices and overall inflation across the world.

US investors bullish on India, Washington-Delhi ties mature says USISPF Chief Aghi

In a bid to address uncertainties surrounding the tracing of diamond origins, India has urged the Group of Seven (G7) nations to delay the impending ban on Russian diamonds, Reuters reported.&nbsp;

The G7's ban on Russian diamonds is set to commence on January 1, with phased-in restrictions on indirect imports beginning around March 1. However, India, home to 90 per cent of the world's diamond cutting and polishing industry, contends that the lack of clarity in tracing rules necessitates a postponement. &nbsp;

The proposed ban is part of broader G7 measures aimed at restricting Moscow's revenues supporting its invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

Sources reveal that India, a crucial player in the diamond industry, has sought more clarity in its discussions with G7 leaders. The timeline set by G7, initiating restrictions on indirect imports from Russia in three to four months, is deemed impractical by Indian authorities due to unclear rules on gem origin tracing. &nbsp;

Russia stands as the largest global producer of rough diamonds by volume, and the proposed restrictions aim to curtail revenues that fund its activities in Ukraine.&nbsp;

India has expressed reservations about G7's new "traceability-based verification and certification" system, which could necessitate the sharing of sensitive data about Indian businesses. &nbsp;

While India acknowledges the potential impact on its diamond sector, particularly in the western state of Gujarat, where the industry is concentrated, officials expect minimal disruption as they predominantly process smaller Russian diamonds. &nbsp;

However, concerns persist about the broader implications for the diamond supply chain, given the challenges the industry already faces due to weakened demand. During the first seven months of the current fiscal year, polished diamond exports from India declined by 29 per cent to $10 billion.&nbsp;

The federal trade ministry, involved in discussions with G7, has not provided an official comment on the matter. &nbsp;

<h2>Road accidents in India</h2>

According to the latest Global Status Report on Road Safety released by the World Health Organization (WHO), the annual number of road traffic deaths dropped five per cent globally to 1.19 million deaths per year, but&nbsp;the numbers rose in India.

The “Road Accidents in India 2022” report stated that&nbsp;the number of deaths reported in India due to road crashes in 2018 was 1,50,785 and it rose to 1,53,792 in 2021. The number was 130,000&nbsp;lakh in 2010.

Last year, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in its report said&nbsp;deaths by road accidents in India had&nbsp;increased by almost 17 per cent in 2021 compared to 2020.&nbsp;Total&nbsp;road accidents reported were 403,000 in 2021, up from 354,000 the year before.

To reduce road accident deaths, the Indian government, earlier this year, launched its&nbsp;own crash test rating structure to assess the safety of new vehicles. The new safety rating system called the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (B-NCAP) will assign star ratings based on a vehicle’s performance during crash tests similar to the global NCAP and European NCAP.&nbsp;

According to&nbsp;&nbsp;Union Minister for Road Transport and Highway&nbsp;Nitin Gadkari, the move will bring cars in India in line with global standards.

The rating will help buyers make an informed decision about the vehicle as well as encourage car makers to upgrade their safety standards.

Britain's Metropolitan Police on Thursday (Dec 12) appealed for more information on the last movements of Indian student, Gurashman Singh Bhatia, who went missing last week and his body was found by police divers in a lake in the Canary Wharf area of east London.

The Met Police released a statement saying that the 23-year-old was reported missing after he went on a night out with his friends last week on Thursday (Dec 14).

The police officials carried out “extensive enquiries” into the matter, including viewing CCTV footage, speaking to witnesses and analysing telephonic and financial data.&nbsp;

After the water searches, which were carried out by the police divers in the water in South Quay, a body was recovered which was believed to be that of Bhatia.

“Gurashman's death is being treated as unexpected, and while there is nothing to suggest it was suspicious, we will ensure our investigation is as thorough as possible to confirm this,” said Detective Chief Superintendent (DCI) James Conway, responsible for local policing in the Tower Hamlets area of Canary Wharf.

“Because of this, we are releasing a CCTV image of Gurashman that was taken before his disappearance and would like anyone who may have seen him in the Marsh Wall area on the evening of Thursday, 14 December and in the early hours of Friday, 15 December, to contact us,” he said.

Further calling the outcome of the inquiry "extremely tragic", Conway said that it was not the news he was hoping to give to Bhatia's family and friends.

“I send them my deepest condolences,” he said.

Aditya-L1, India's first mission to study the Sun will reach its destination, the Lagrange Point 1 (L1) in the first week of January 2024, said Jitendra Singh, India's Minister of State (Science and Technology). The Aditya-L1 mission was launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in February this year.

Aditya-L1 mission reached a major milestone recently as it captured the first complete images of the Sun. The images were taken with the help of the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) instrument onboard Aditya-L1. SUIT has various filters which it uses to capture the Sun's photosphere and chromosphere in a specific wavelength range.

ISRO says that the observations made during the ADITYA-L1 mission will help scientists examine and gain a better understanding of the magnetised solar atmosphere. This will in turn yield important insights which will also make us better understand the impact of solar radiation on climate here on Earth.

The images taken by Aditya-L1 so far have depicted sunspots as well as 'quiet' regions of the sun. These and many more observations in future will reveal secrets of the Sun's photosphere and chromosphere.

"A satellite placed in the halo orbit around the L1 point has the major advantage of continuously viewing the Sun without any occultation/eclipses. This will provide a greater advantage of observing the solar activities and its effect on space weather in real time. The spacecraft carries seven payloads to observe the photosphere, chromosphere and the outermost layers of the Sun (the corona) using electromagnetic and particle and magnetic field detectors. Using the special vantage point L1, four payloads directly view the Sun and the remaining three payloads carry out in-situ studies of particles and fields at the Lagrange point L1, thus providing important scientific studies of the propagatory effect of solar dynamics in the interplanetary medium," said ISRO on its website.

Two more Opposition MPs were suspended in Lok Sabha over grounds of misconduct on Wednesday (Dec 20), as the suspension of MPs broke all records and led to a massive row.&nbsp;

Till now, a total of 143 Opposition MPs have faced suspension from the two Houses in the last week after they called for a statement from Indian Home Minister Amit Shah over the parliament's security breach which happened last week. In Lok Sabha alone, till now 97 Lok Sabha MPs have been&nbsp;suspended.

Kerala Congress (Mani) leader Thomas Chazhikadan and CPI(M) leader A M Ariff were suspended by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla after a resolution, which was moved by Indian Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, was adopted by the House.

<h2>More than 68 per cent of Opposition MPs are now out of Lok Sabha</h2>

The speaker suspended both the MPs for the rest of the session. Among the 142 Opposition MPs present in Lok Sabha, 97 have faced suspension till now - which is more than 68 per cent.

In Rajya Sabha, with less than 100 Opposition MPs left after multiple suspensions, the government will not face any challenge in that House either.

This also means that now the government can get any legislation passed through the House easily in the next two days as the winter session comes to an end. This will be the last full session before the Lok Sabha elections take place next year.

However, Lok Sabha Speaker Birla has maintained that any security-related incident which takes place inside the House falls under the secretariat's purview and the government cannot intervene.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not given any statement in the House regarding the security breach. However, while speaking to the Indian newspaper Dainik Jagran, the prime minister said that the security breach was a "very serious" incident. He added that an investigation is needed, however, there is "no need for a debate".

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, criticising the suspension spree, said that, "Democracy has been strangulated". She added that the Opposition MPs had only demanded the home minister's statement on the "extraordinary events" of December 13, when the parliament's security breach happened. "There are no words to describe the arrogance with which this request was treated," she said.

India: Two more Opposition MPs suspended from Lok Sabha, count reaches 143 members

European Parliamentarian (MEP) Morten Løkkegaard, who chairs relations with India in the European Parliament, has underscored the urgency for collaboration between India and Europe amidst global uncertainties, stating, "I think this is a time for India and Europe should unite, to have a lot more cooperation because we live in geopolitically uncertain times...big democracies have to work together".&nbsp;

The parliamentarian is in India as part of a European Parliamentary delegation which met India's external affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and Trade Minister Piyush Goyal. Speaking to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, he commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accelerating India-Europe relations since 2021, noting, "...the relationship due to Prime Minister Modi has been developing very fast and still developing."

Addressing the ongoing talks on the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement, Løkkegaard emphasised the mutual need for the agreement, declaring, "Both parties need this FTA agreement, we need it for growth but also for cooperation as such in the times of geopolitical tensions." He called for immediate political action, stating, "Now. I think that the negotiators, the technical sides have used all forces they can use and now we need political decisions to be made on both sides."&nbsp;

Full interview:

WION: What was the key focus of your India visit?
Morten Løkkegaard: Well I think it's been extremely interesting and very timely. We have pushed for these meetings for several months. I was here in Delhi for the first time in January, representing the delegation. And I said that it would be very nice for us in this very important times to have inter-parliamentary relations again, and we really needed to re-establish the contacts. So it's a great fortune. I'm very fortunate that we have the chance now to visit India again. And we were here, actually two delegations, both of us from the relations with India, but also the security and defence committee. So we were actually two groupings, a lot of people, very good meetings with the ministers, with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and with the Minister for Commerce and with the parliament as well. We had the interparliamentary meeting on Monday, and discussed the various issues of great importance. I think this is a time for India and Europe should unite, to have a lot more cooperation because we live in a geopolitically speaking, we live in uncertain times, things are changing very rapidly, all over the globe. And in these times, big democracies have to work together and this has basically been the reason for our meetings.

WION: Democracies need to work together. How do you see the relationship between India and the European Union going forward this year was significant. We saw the two TTC meetings, one in Brussels, then virtually. So how do you see things progressing between the two sides
Morten Løkkegaard: Fortunately, very rapidly moving forward. This is no secret that for many years we have been, as I said in a kind of frozen condition, kind of pause. But since 2021, the relationship due to Prime Minister Modi has been developing very fast and still developing. Of course, we still have a long way to go. But the good news is that, both parties really want this. I see there's a strategic interest for both parties to have this ever-closer relationship. As I said democracies have to work together. And by doing that, we are really, really doing some good right now. Of course, still lots of things to do. But we are moving in the right direction.&nbsp;

WION: Moving in the right direction. One thing that needs to really be fast-tracked is perhaps the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), how do you see the conversation on FTA going forward? Do you see any timeline for the conclusion, what has been the progress and what's your view if you can talk about
Morten Løkkegaard: &nbsp;It's really very robust, the talks I would say. We had a meeting with the Minister for Commerce last night, and he's a very outspoken person and I'm very fond of that. I think it's very good to have these robust conversations about what's at stake. Again, both parties need this FTA agreement, we needed for growth but also for cooperation as such in times of geopolitical tensions. So I think there's a need to do something. It's very, it's very difficult. It's complicated stuff, because we are moving from the very opposite positions in Europe. We have a tradition for huge packages when we're doing FTAs. We have a lot of them, already. So we kind of, you know, introduced a way of dealing with these things, which is not very familiar to the Indians. I mean, as the Minister said, on Monday, we are usually always negotiating trade alone, not any other issues. Coming from Europe. We are also very interested in introducing chapters on climate, you know chapters about working conditions for workers and so on and so forth. It's part of the deal. So we need some political movement. Now. I think that the negotiators, the technical sides have used all forces they can use and now we need political decisions to be made on both sides.

WION: Political decision on both sides, if you can just elaborate on that...&nbsp;
Morten Løkkegaard: Yeah. I think that both sides need to understand that coming from very opposite positions. We need to do steps that we haven't done before. I would say this, this would take a paradigm shift in the way that we do negotiations and trade deals in Europe and this is of course not an easy step. So it's up to our leaders in Europe and now to decide how much we can give into this. And on the Indian side, you need to get out of your comfort zone, also when it comes to trade. You are a big nation you are a developing nation. You're doing things very fast at the moment. Maybe also too fast for the mental thinking, because what is needed is of course to get out of this comfort zone and to realize that you have to do a lot more on tariffs, you have to open your markets much more, you had to get used to the idea of more comprehensive packages, as I was suggesting, otherwise it will be difficult.

WION: So, let's move to another direction that is the defence and security partnership. How do you see the relationship between the two sides India and the European Union working together convergences? And perhaps if there are certain divergences as well?&nbsp;
Morten Løkkegaard: Yes, one area I would I would emphasise is the digital area. I mean, what very good news is that you will pass the law. On the Indian side about the digital, about data. We did the same. The European Parliament as the first parliament in the world just agreed on an AI law which you know, try to find the balance between innovation, making things happen for businesses and the protection of citizens and our data. And the good news is of course, that the Indian side has done the same thing. And now we have very intensively discussed during these two days, where we can find common ground with these two pieces of legislation. And this could also be an icebreaker when it comes to the to FTA, I think, that's a very good sign.

WION: So, talking about the security and defence aspect to the Indo-Pacific Region and how both sides are working together. This increased aggressiveness by China. What do you have to say about that as well?&nbsp;
Morten Løkkegaard: We are of course also very worried about aggressive actions and I think we can do a lot together with India, in rebalancing the issues here in the Indo-Pacific. Of course, this is also of much concern of the Americans. They are doing a lot of at the moment whenever you visit Washington. It's on everyone's mind the Indo-Pacific and the relationship with China. I think that we need to recalibrate the positions, the strategic work in the Asian area as such, and in the Indo-Pacific, and in order to do, that we need to cooperate even better also on cybersecurity, on security and defence and such. And then the good news is also that we have our security Defense Committee visiting various ministers these two days and good results. Very good, positive atmosphere. I think we can do a lot better.&nbsp;

WION: So, let's move to another direction that is the defence and security partnership. How do you see the relationship between the two sides India and the European Union working together convergences? And perhaps if there are certain divergences as well? WION: So, talking about the security and defence aspect to the Indo-Pacific Region and how both sides are working together. This increased aggressiveness by China. What do you have to say about that as well? Morten Løkkegaard: We are of course also very worried about aggressive actions and I think we can do a lot together with India, in rebalancing the issues here in the Indo-Pacific. Of course, this is also of much concern of the Americans. They are doing a lot of at the moment whenever you visit Washington. It's on everyone's mind the Indo-Pacific and the relationship with China. I think that we need to recalibrate the positions, the strategic work in the Asian area as such, and in the Indo-Pacific, and in order to do, that we need to cooperate even better also on cybersecurity, on security and defence and such. And then the good news is also that we have our security Defense Committee visiting various ministers these two days and good results. Very good, positive atmosphere. I think we can do a lot better.
