"I said I wouldn't comment on the underlying substance because it is an ongoing law enforcement matter and it would be inappropriate for me to do so when DOJ (US Department of Justice) is presenting a case in court. PM Modi made the groundbreaking announcement during his Navy Day address at Sindhudurg in Maharashtra.

Ever since coming to power, the Modi government has been attempting to shed the relics of the colonial era and Indianising the ranks is being seen in the same light.

"Inspired by the ideals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the India of today is moving forward abandoning the slavery mentality. The epaulettes donned by our naval officers will now highlight the heritage and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as the new epaulettes will be similar to the naval ensign," PM Modi said.

“With the feeling of taking pride in one’s heritage, I am proud to make another announcement. The navy is now going to name its ranks in line with Indian traditions,” he added.

The PBOR ranks that will be renamed are Master Chief Petty Officer Ist Class, Master Chief Petty Officer IInd Class, Chief Petty Officer, Petty Officer, Leading Seaman, Seaman Ist Class and Seaman IInd Class.

The current epaulettes (a shoulder piece signalling the officer's rank), meanwhile feature the Nelson's Ring which as the name suggests -- is a colonial legacy.

"We have been speaking to them... pushing them forward in the INDIA alliance. But, of late, there has not been much progress on that front.
New Zealand skipper Tom Latham on Saturday said hosts India have been playing "fantastic cricket" and the Kiwis will need to adapt quickly to win the battle of World Cup table-toppers. Both teams come into the contest unbeaten in their four matches and now meet in the Himalayan hill town of Dharamsala to get ahead of each other in the race to the semi-finals.

New Zealand have an edge over India in World Cup match-ups with a 5-3 advantage and had knocked out the much-fancied team in the semi-finals of the last edition in 2019.

"I'm not sure to be honest," Latham, who is leading the side in the absence of the injured Kane Williamson, said on his team's good record against India at the 50-over showpiece.

"They're a fantastic team. They've been playing some great cricket for a long period of time. We've had some great contests in ICC events, but also in bilateral series, whether that be home or away."

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham on Saturday said hosts India have been playing "fantastic cricket" and the Kiwis will need to adapt quickly to win the battle of World Cup table-toppers.

As a measure of precaution, teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in the southern Indian city of Chennai and its adjoining districts, in view of a brewing cyclone in the Bay of Bengal and the very heavy rains it could bring. According to the NRDF, five teams of 25 personnel each have been deployed as follows - one team in Chennai, two teams in Chengalpattu district and two teams in Villupuram district. The teams are carrying flood rescue equipment, tree-cutting chainsaws, collapsed structure search and rescue kits, communications gear etc. This comes after the city and adjoining regions were lashed by around 10 cms of rainfall on Wednesday, thereby causing waterlogging, immense build-up of vehicular traffic and inconvenience to commuters.

Chennai has been witnessing significant amounts of rainfall since Wednesday (Nov 29) and as per forecasts, the rainfall is only set to intensify over the weekend. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, under the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a prevailing low-pressure area over the south Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal, evolved into a well-marked low-pressure area on Wednesday. On Thursday (Nov 30), it is likely to move north-northwest and concentrate into a depression. Typically, a low-pressure area is where the atmospheric pressure is lesser than the surrounding regions. Low-pressure areas are often associated with cloudy skies, windy conditions, rains and storms.

According to the RMC, this evolving weather system is likely to intensify into a cyclone around the weekend. In November, the Northeast monsoon has been active over the Tamil Nadu coast and yielding good rains. Given that the cyclone is expected to form around the weekend, heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast for Chennai and adjoining districts for Saturday and Sunday. The impact of this weather system could also bring heavy rains to other coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. As per the forecast, the heavy to very heavy rainfall could continue on Monday as well.

In 2023, Chennai city and adjoining districts received considerable rainfall even during the non-monsoon months. This region usually gets the maximum share of rainfall during the October-December Northeast monsoon. Of the reservoirs that supply water to Chennai, three reservoirs are at around 90 per cent storage capacity. As of Thursday, the Puzhal reservoir is at 93.15 per cent storage level, the Thervoy Kandigai reservoir is at 93 per cent and the Chembarambakkam reservoir is at 89.33 per cent, based on data from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB). The Chembarambakkam reservoir outlet feeds into the Adyar river that meanders through Chennai and authorities have started gradually releasing water from the reservoir, as a measure of abundant precaution. On Wednesday, water from the Chembarambakkam reservoir was being let out into the Adyar River at a rate of 1000 cusecs(1000 cubic feet per second) and this was increased to 6000 cusecs on Thursday.

Nearly 10 days after Australia scripted history by beating India in the ODI World Cup final, captain Pat Cummins has revealed the underlying motivation that guided his team to upstage India on the ultimate stage.

Cummins said it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that his side wanted to take on by silencing the 130,000-strong Indian crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. So, whatever happens today, it’s a special day. We tried to soak it all in. It was a sea of blue, it’s not like people were wearing casuals, and everyone was wearing the blue Indian jersey," Cummins was quoted as saying by ABC News.

“I was just thinking it would be satisfying if we shut them all up basically, we could hear a silence, that’s going to be satisfying. The enormity of it sunk in when we were in that cauldron,” he added.

Cummins' tactical masterclass

Right from winning the toss to apply the finishing touches to the game, Australia managed to silence the Indian crowd. Cummins was instrumental in making it happen as his field placements and bowling changes worked like a charm on the big day.

After India lost Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer within the powerplay overs, Cummins utilised the inability of Indian batters to seize the moment and bowled his fifth bowling option out.

Such was the squeeze applied by Cummins that after Sharma's dismissal in the 11th over, India only managed four boundaries throughout the innings, with three coming off the bat of tailenders.

Apart from his tactical acumen, Cummins turned up with the ball as well, finishing with figures reading 10-0-34-2. He got the wickets of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. Kohli's wicket proved to be another turning point in the match as India never recovered from thereon and finished with a below-par total that was chased with relative ease by the likes of Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne.

'Shut them all up': Pat Cummins reveals underlying motivation to beat India in World Cup final

It's good news for the people living in the border area of North Kashmir's Gurez Sector. After India's Independence, Gurez Valley for the first time has been connected with the electricity grid bringing cheer among the residents. The government of Jammu and Kashmir called it a historic moment.

Gurez, which was named as the best offbeat destination in India, has garnered a huge response from tourists across the world in recent years. The border area relied on the oil generators for electricity and it has now finally been connected to the electricity grid. Gurez remained the only area in the Kashmir Valley which was not connected to the electricity grid.

Gurez Valley remains cut off from the rest of the world during the winter months due to heavy snowfall. While the government has been working aggressively to keep the road connectivity open for the whole year, connecting it to the electricity grid has been appreciated by the locals living in the area.

''We are highly thankful to the government of the Union Territory including LG, Local administration and PDD department. We thank them for finally providing us electricity from the grid. It has been a long pending demand of the people of Gurez and Finally has been fulfilled and we thank them from our hearts,'' said an official.

It's the dedication and hard work of the PDD department which has laid down around 180 kilometres of 150mmsq conductor. They have also installed 1950 street poles. With an underground cabling of around 4 kilometres while crossing one of the most difficult terrains of Razdhan Pass situated at the height of 12672 ft above sea level.

''I am highly thankful to the government of Jammu and Kashmir for fulfilling the dream of the people of Gurez. We will be provided with 24-hour electricity that spreads happiness all over. We hope that the government will take further steps for the development of Gurez Valley,'' said Mohamad Ismail Lone, Local.

The government said that around 1500 consumers will be benefited in the first phase of the project. The other villages will be connected in a phased manner.

A proposed broadcast bill in India could cover accounts and users on social media platforms that put news and current affairs content online on YouTube, WhatsApp or Telegram channels.

The Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill 2023 also seeks to regulate streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+Hotstar, and other broadcasting services or OTT platforms.

The bill will treat anybody broadcasting news and current affairs as OTT broadcasters who will be liable to attract the same obligations, Hindustan Times reported.

Streaming platforms and online news organisations, which fell under the category of publishers, will now come under the category of broadcasters.

Clause 20 of the new bill says, "Any person who broadcasts news and current affairs programmes through an online paper, news portal, website, social media intermediary, or other similar medium but excluding publishers of newspapers and replica e-papers of such newspapers, as part of a systematic business, professional, or commercial activity shall adhere to the Programme Code and Advertisement code referred to in Section 19."

Although the meaning of an OTT broadcasting service excludes social media intermediaries and their users, experts cited in the report said clause 20 includes them if they broadcast news and current affairs programmes using these platforms.

It implies that independent journalists with YouTube channels and Instagram accounts, where they post news for professional reasons, will have the same obligations as an OTT broadcaster, said the report.

Furthermore, citizen journalists will also attract the same obligations if they post news content as "a systematic business, professional or commercial activity," the report said.

However, the bill does not cover a person occasionally posting public interest content or streaming a riot live.

But there's less clarity about whether the Twitter account of a journalist featuring tweets about the news could attract the obligations of an OTT broadcaster. "You could get included, but that will be determined by how they notify the threshold for OTT platforms and if they will have a lower one for journalists," the report quoted Gowree Gokhale, partner at Nishith Desai Associates, as saying.

While financial influencers could attract the obligations of an OTT broadcaster, newspapers and their e-replicas would be exempted. Although YouTube will not comply with the act as it is a social media intermediary, the paid version of YouTube, YouTube Premium, will qualify as an OTT broadcasting service.

Under this bill, even the prime minister's WhatsApp channel could attract the same obligations as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, claimed an expert quoted in the report.
