Heavy pollution-fuelled smog has forced authorities in Pakistan’s most populous province, Punjab, including the eastern city of Lahore, to close markets and schools. The government in the province announced a four-day public holiday in several districts to mitigate the impact of smog.

<h2>What is&nbsp;Punjab government’s plan?</h2>

The provincial government has announced a public holiday from November 9 to 12.&nbsp;

“The government has decided to close down markets for four days from 9 to 12 November in the major cities of Punjab because of smog on the advisory of the health department,” said Amir Mir, the information minister for Punjab.&nbsp;

According to a directive from the provincial government, schools, offices, restaurants, and businesses aside from priority services like pharmacies, hospitals and courts, would all close to limit residents’ movement outside.&nbsp;

The Pakistani province is home to more than 110 million people.

Punjab caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi told a press conference&nbsp;on Tuesday (Nov 7) that the public holiday will take effect in Lahore, Gujranwala and Hafizabad divisions of the province.&nbsp;

Marriage halls and bakeries will also be open, said Naqvi, according to PTI news agency.&nbsp;

<h2>Situation in Lahore</h2>

The provincial capital of Lahore has been among the most polluted cities and its air quality was the worst in the world on Wednesday (Nov 8), according to Swiss group IQAir.&nbsp;

The air quality index of the Pakistani province was at a “hazardous” 432, followed by India’s capital Delhi at 302.&nbsp;

The caretaker Pakistani CM has also reportedly attributed the spread of smog in Lahore and other parts of the province to the burning of the residues of crops in the Indian state of Punjab and requested caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar to take action.&nbsp;

<h2>Nepal records another earthquake in a week</h2>

On Monday (Nov 6), as per India's National Centre for Seismology, an earthquake of 5.6 magnitude struck Nepal, and its ripples were felt across northern India.&nbsp;

Notably, the earthquake was recorded in Nepal at 4.14 pm (local time) around the same location where a 6.4 magnitude struck on Friday (Nov 3), killing at least 153 people in the Himalayan country.

Jajarkot, in Karnali province, was one of the worst-hit areas in Friday's earthquake.

<h2>Second earthquake in a week&nbsp;</h2>

The first earthquake this week occurred with a magnitude of 6.4, Nepal's National Seismological Centre said. The German Research Centre for Geosciences measured the quake at 5.7, downgrading it from 6.2, while the US Geological Survey pegged it at 5.6.

Officials fear that the death toll in Friday's earthquake in Jajarkot could rise, as they had not been able to establish contact in the hilly area near the epicentre, some 500 km (300 miles) west of the capital Kathmandu. The district has a population of 190,000 with villages scattered in remote hills.

Nepal is situated on the boundary of two tectonic plates — the Asian and Indo-Australian plates. The collision of these two plates caused the Himalayas to rise up, with Tibet at its southern edge.

India and the United States share the goal of preventing the spread of the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Middle East, said a senior State Department official, on Thursday (Nov 2). India and US share goal of preventing spread of conflict in Middle East: State department

India, along with countries like the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and China,&nbsp;agreed to work to manage the risk that artificial intelligence (AI) poses, at a summit in London, on Wednesday (Nov 1) aimed at creating a safe way forward for the rapidly evolving technology.&nbsp;

India was among the 28 countries that signed the so-called Bletchley Declaration on the first day of the AI Safety Summit hosted by the UK government, through which the countries have agreed to work together on AI safety research.&nbsp;

"We affirm that, whilst safety must be considered across the AI lifecycle, actors developing frontier AI capabilities, in particular those AI systems which are unusually powerful and potentially harmful, have a particularly strong responsibility for ensuring the safety of these AI systems, including through systems for safety testing, through evaluations, and by other appropriate measures," read a part of the declaration.

<h2>First international declaration</h2>

The summit is seen as the first Western effort to manage AI’s safe development after tech executives and lawmakers raised the alarm over the rapid development of the technology which poses an existential threat to the world if not regulated.&nbsp;

The concerns have sparked a race among nations to come up with plans to regulate AI. China’s vice minister, on Wednesday, joined the US and European leaders and tech bosses such as Elon Musk and ChatGPT’s Sam Altman at the summit in London. Beijing is seen as a key participant at the summit, given the country’s role in developing AI.&nbsp;

UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, welcomed the declaration, calling it “quite incredible”. Ahead of his appearance at the summit, on Thursday (Nov 2), Sunak also said that nothing will be more “transformative” to future generations than technological advances like AI.&nbsp;

However, we “owe it to them to ensure AI develops in a safe and responsible way, gripping the risks it poses early enough in the process,” he added.&nbsp;

The communique marks a diplomatic success for the UK, and particularly Sunak given that the summit is his brainchild and took place after he expressed concern over AI models rapidly advancing with no oversight.&nbsp;

“For the first time, we now have countries agreeing that we need to look not just independently but collectively at the risk around frontier AI,” British digital minister Michelle Donelan told reporters.&nbsp;

She noted that it was an achievement just to get so many key players in one room. Donelan opened the summit by saying that the development of AI “can’t be left to chance or neglect or to private actors alone”.&nbsp;

She also announced two further AI Safety Summits, one to be held in South Korea in six months and another in France next year.&nbsp;

<h2>Questions raised over China’s participation</h2>

Ahead of the summit, several British lawmakers reportedly raised questions about China’s participation given the low level of trust between Beijing and Washington as well as several European nations, particularly in the context of Chinese involvement in technology.&nbsp;

CERT-In has started its probe in the Apple threat notification issue raised by opposition MPs, and a notice has been sent to the company, IT Secretary S Krishnan said on Thursday.

He hoped that Apple would cooperate with the investigation by CERT-In on the issue.

"CERT-In has started its probe... they (Apple) will cooperate in this probe," Krishnan told reporters on the sidelines of an event related to the Meity-NSF research collaboration.

Indian Computer Emergency Response Team or CERT-In is the national nodal agency for responding to computer security incidents as and when they occur.

Asked if a notice has been sent to Apple, the IT Secretary answered in the affirmative.

Several Opposition leaders on October 31 claimed they have received an alert from Apple warning them of "state-sponsored attackers trying to remotely compromise" their iPhones and alleged hacking by the government, a charge IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw rejected but assured a thorough probe.

Those who received such notifications included Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, party leaders Shashi Tharoor, Pawan Khera, K C Venugopal, Supriya Shrinate, T S Singhdeo and Bhupinder S Hooda; Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav.

This comes a day after the 57-year-old former English teacher said that he was behind the blast that killed three people and injured dozens of others.&nbsp;

The Kerala Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) formally arrested Martin under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act as well as the Explosives Substances Act and charges of murder.&nbsp;

Kochi Police Commissioner A Akbar, as per reports, said that the 57-year-old was arrested after a detailed questioning and that the investigation team has reasonable doubts to believe that he is the one who committed the crime.&nbsp;

<h2>What are the charges against the accused?</h2>

According to Kerala’s Director General of Police, the blasts took place due to an improvised explosive device (IED). Hours after the incident, Martin, who had surrendered, released a video of himself on Facebook in which he can be heard spewing hatred against a community.&nbsp;

The police also said that the initial probe indicates that Martin acted alone to gather the materials, build the IED bomb, planting and detonating them when the group had gathered for the final day of a three-day-long prayer meeting.&nbsp;

“The accused was questioned in detail. Apart from that, other evidence was also collected by the investigation team. Based on that, the team has reasonable grounds to believe that the person has committed the crime,” a SIT official&nbsp;told reporters.&nbsp;

He added, "Whether there was any assistance rendered by anybody or if there were any other person involved, all these will be subjected to a detailed investigation."&nbsp;

The suspect is expected to be presented before a court on Tuesday (Oct 31) while the investigation team may collect more evidence, including if there was another person involved in the blasts and probe if there are other reasons for Martin’s anger towards the Jehovah’s Witnesses community.

India: Manipur police officer shot dead by suspected tribal militants at Moreh

With peace returning to the Kashmir Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir government has been hosting several national and international events in various districts of the Union Territory. Adding another feather to the cap, Srinagar is hosting the 67th National School Games with football and volleyball as the two primary sports.&nbsp;

Around 2000 athletes from all over the country are participating in the mega sporting event. With 28 states, eight union territories, and several SGFI-recognised boards participating, this event truly represents the diversity and inclusivity of India's sporting landscape.&nbsp;

''Kashmir held these games eight years ago and now we are hosting this again. There are two main sports that we are hosting, volleyball and football. For volleyball, it's under-17 while for football it's under-19 age groups for boys. More than 63 teams are participating, representing 34 units. 28 states and eight union territories are participating,"&nbsp;said Waseem Raja, joint director, Youth Services, Kashmir.&nbsp;

"This is the first time Kashmir is hosting indoor volleyball competitions which means we have improved infrastructure-wise. We are all ready to host national and international games."

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated the 67th National School Games and said that the country is witnessing a resurgence in sports and a robust new sports culture. He also said that eminent sports persons are emerging from small villages &amp; towns, and they have achieved excellence in international sporting events with their spectacular performances.

Athletes from different countries love the Kashmir Valley and say the weather in the valley is perfect for playing outdoor games. They say more and more events like the National Games should be held and players from every state should be called in to participate.

''The atmosphere here is nice and exactly like any other sports event. We like it here and everything has been done nicely. All arrangements have been done upto the mark. All sports activities should be held here. We appeal to the government that Kashmir should be made a permanent venue due to its good weather for many other sports activities," said Satvir Singh of&nbsp;Punjab.&nbsp;

J&amp;K has ushered into a new sporting era as the government chalks development plans while building adequate sports infrastructure. It is also introducing sports as an integral part of the educational curriculum, increasing access&nbsp;to experts and providing opportunities to talents across the UT. India's EAM S Jaishankar meets families of Indians detained in Qatar

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for questioning in an excise policy-linked money-laundering case on November 2, official sources said on Monday.

Kejriwal (55) has been issued the summons under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and according to the sources, the agency will record his statement once he deposes before the investigating officer of the case in Delhi.

The Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) national convenor has been asked to depose at the ED's Delhi office at 11 am (local time)&nbsp;on November 2, the sources said.

This is the first time that Kejriwal has been summoned by the ED. He was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case in April.

Reacting to the summons, Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said it is clear that the BJP-led Centre's only goal is to finish the AAP.

"They are leaving no stone unturned to frame Kejriwal in a fake case and send him to jail," Bharadwaj said.

The ED has mentioned Kejriwal's name multiple times in its chargesheets filed in the case and said the accused were in touch with him regarding the preparation of the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

The ED has claimed in one of the chargesheets that it has recorded the statement of Butchibabu, an accountant allegedly linked to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha, in which he said "there was political understanding between K Kavitha and the chief minister (Kejriwal) and (former) deputy chief minister (Manish Sisodia). In that process, K Kavitha also met Vijay Nair (AAP communications in-charge arrested in the case) on March 19-20, 2021".

In an another instance involving arrested accused Dinesh Arora, the ED said he told the agency that he had met Kejriwal once at his residence.

Similarly, the ED chargesheet said YSRCP MP Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy also held meetings with Kejriwal, wherein the AAP leader welcomed his entry into the Delhi liquor business.

It had said Buchibabu and another accused, Arun Pillai, have revealed that they and Nair were working with the "support and sanction" of Kejriwal and Sisodia for all the excise policy-related activities, including its formulation and implementation.

It had also alleged that Nair "arranged a video call through facetime (a video-calling facility on iPhone) on his phone for another arrested accused, Sameer (Mahendru), and Sh Arvind Kejriwal, where Sh Arvind said to Sh Sameer that Vijay is his boy and that Sh Sameer should trust him and carry on with him".
&nbsp; &nbsp;
Kejriwal had then rubbished the contents of the ED complaint, saying the agency has "filed 5,000 chargesheets under the tenure of the current government".

"How many people have been sentenced? All the cases filed by the ED are fake and they are used to topple governments or form them. The ED does not file cases to eradicate corruption. They do it to buy MLAs, topple governments. There is a question on the ED chargesheet," he had said.

It is alleged that the Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22 to grant licences to liquor traders allowed cartelisation and favoured certain dealers who allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge strongly refuted by the AAP.

The policy was subsequently scrapped and the Delhi lieutenant governor recommended a CBI probe into alleged irregularities in its implementation, following which the ED registered a case under the PMLA.

In a related development, the Supreme Court rejected two separate bail pleas of Sisodia in corruption and money-laundering cases related to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam and said a transfer of Rs 338 crore was tentatively established in the matter.

Five men gang-rape girl for 20 days in India's Uttar Pradesh, accused on the run: Police

Three months after 105 antiquities, which were earlier smuggled, came back to India, the United States is sending another batch of 1,414 objects back to the country, which will include antiquities from New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met).

As per the official sources, these objects have already been given to the Consulate General of India in New York. According to the procedure, a team from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which has been the custodian of all Indian antiquities, will be sent to the United States to carry out the verification of the objects after which the officials will initiate the repatriation, as reported by The Indian Express.

The objects will also be authenticated by the ASI as “antiquities” or “non-antiquities”. Although the ASI has not revealed any specific details regarding their age or region, the US authorities stated that 1,414 objects from various sources appeared to be of “Indian provenance”.

A senior official stated that the batch includes a few antiquities which will be from Met. In an earlier report, it was revealed that a treasure trove which belonged to the Met could be traced back to antique dealer Subhash Kapoor, who was imprisoned on charges of smuggling antiquities.

<h2>Met&nbsp;announces return of 15 sculptures in India</h2>

After the revelation, a search warrant was issued by the Supreme Court of the State of New York against the Met on March 22, which gave 10 days to the authorities to seize the antiquities.

On March 30, a statement was issued by the Met in which it claimed that it would “transfer 15 sculptures for return to the Government of India, after having learned that the works were illegally removed from India”.

The government of India in July said that the Met's objects were likely to reach the country in the next three to six months. On July 17, the Indian Consulate in New York was given 105 antiquities by the US authorities, which will be repatriated to India in August this year. However, the objects of Met were not among them.

ASI officials stated that the new batch of 1,414 objects will most probably have non-antiquities, and they will be accordingly ranked while following the definition of “antiquity”.

In the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972, an antiquity has been defined as “any coin, sculpture, painting, epigraph or other work of art or craftsmanship; any article, object or thing detached from a building or cave; any article, object or thing illustrative of science, art, crafts, literature, religion, customs, morals or politics in bygone ages; any article, object or thing of historical interest” that “has been in existence for not less than 100 years”.

The air quality in India's national capital New Delhi, along with Gurugram and Noida fell from the category of 'poor' to 'very poor' in which the Air Quality Index (AQI) ranged from 221 to 341, creating an alarming situation for the residents in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Even after the Delhi government's 15-point winter action plan which was aimed at controlling the increasing pollution, the fight against deteriorating air quality continued.

Even though initiatives like 'Red Light on, Gaadi off' have been implemented as biomass burning emissions keep contributing to increasing PM2.5 levels, the haze continues to linger as 'Very Poor' air quality has been forecasted for the capital city from October 29 to 31, 2023.

On Sunday (Oct 29), the national capital's overall air quality was recorded in the 'Very Poor' category, according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR)-India. In Delhi, the AQI was recorded at 309 on Sunday morning (Oct 29).

According to the latest data collected by SAFAR-India, the air quality near Delhi University was in the 'Very Poor' category with AQI recorded at 341 in the early morning hours while in the area around IIT, it was recorded at 300.

Meanwhile, in the area around Lodhi Road, the AQI was recorded at 262 and the air was categorised in the 'Poor' category. In its bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on the air quality of the national capital forecasted that predominant surface wind is likely to blow from different directions in the city and the wind speed is estimated to be around 04-08 kmph, which will lead to mist and clear sky in the morning on October 29.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Friday (Oct 27) had stated that they have implemented a 15-point winter action plan for curbing the pollution.

"Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had earlier announced a 15-point winter action plan to curb the pollution caused by vehicles, biomass burning, dust, etc. Now this winter action plan is being implemented on the ground one by one to reduce the pollution in the national capital," Rai said while speaking to the news agency ANI.

"Now the data says that in AQI the level of Particulate matter (PM) 10 is decreasing and that of PM2.5 is increasing. This means that pollution caused by vehicles and biomass burning is increasing. For this, the 'Red Light on, Gaadi off' campaign has been started," he added.

According to the daily bulletin of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI of Delhi was 304 as of 4 pm local time on October 28. From October 29 to 31, the air quality will be in the 'Very Poor' category, as per the Air Quality and Weather Bulletin for Delhi.&nbsp;

Indian PM Modi dials Egypt's El-Sisi to raise caution against escalation of Israel-Hamas war

Glenn Maxwell smashed the fastest century in ODI World Cup history&nbsp;at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday (Oct 25) against the Netherlands, obliterating South Africa's Aiden Markram's record&nbsp;set earlier in the tournament. Maxwell reached the century in 40 balls after Netherlands all-rounder Bas de Leede served a beamer on the leg stump which was promptly deposited by the dasher over the long leg boundary.

Having come in to bat in the 40th over, not many would have predicted that Maxwell would reach his century but not only did he reach the milestone, he broke the record by a margin of nine&nbsp;balls. Maxwell was at his menacing best, pummeling and carting the bowlers to all parts of the park.

He brought his half-century in 26 balls before reaching the three-figure mark in another 14 deliveries. En route, the Australian smashed nine boundaries and eight maximums.&nbsp;

<h2>Pretty cooked all day: Maxwell&nbsp;</h2>

Speaking after breaking the world record, Maxwell said he was not feeling well when he walked out to bat in the middle.

"I've been pretty cooked all day. Probably just cleared my head a bit to just go out and play. The situation when Davey and Greeny got out, I had to take it deep a little bit," said Maxwell.&nbsp;

Explaining the outrageous ramp shots that he played even when the Dutch bowlers were digging the ball into the pitch, Maxwell said he had "enough time to go after" them.&nbsp;

"Even if they are banging it into the wicket, I feel I have enough time to go after it. And when they are bowling quick, my hands have to be faster. Just generally try to get it over the infield," added Maxwell.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Batting first, Australia were off to a sedate start as Mitchell Marsh perished in the fourth over. Steve Smith, walking in at no.3, joined forces with David Warner and the duo stitched a classy partnership before the former perished to a corker of a catch from Van der Merwe.&nbsp;

Warner continued from there and reached his second consecutive century of the WC, sixth overall and showed he remains one of the top white ball batters.&nbsp;

While wickets did fall in clump for the five-time champions in the middle, Maxwell's blitzkrieg ensured that Australia posted a mammoth 399 run total on the board.&nbsp;

Indian-origin doctor at Royal Bahrain Hospital sacked over anti-Palestine posts

India's Supreme Court, in a landmark ruling on Tuesday (Oct 17), rejected the pleas for the legalisation of same-sex marriage&nbsp;while clearly stating that it is for the parliament to make laws and the court can only scrutinise and interpret them.

The verdict delivered by the five-judge bench of the Supreme Court left many puzzled who failed to understand why the court, even after sympathising with the LGBTQ community and being vocal about their rights, failed to give legal recognition to their marriage and threw the ball in the court of lawmakers.

Speaking exclusively to WION, former Supreme Court judge Indu Malhotra explained why legislation is needed in the case of same-sex marriage.

"The legal recognition of a relationship like marriage has some legal incidents. There are many incidents in such homosexual relationships. The cases of separation or break up in such relations are as frequent as among heterosexuals. If the homosexual couple adopts a child and then separates, where does the child go? You will have to protect the rights of the child also," said Malhotra, who was India's first woman advocate to become the judge of the apex court.

"I think we made a lot of progress in this country, but legal recognition means legal implication. You have to protect many aspects of marriage like divorce, domestic violence, separation, alimony and child custody. So you can't do it away with a court verdict. These are matters of legislation and this is how they have to evolve. There are many legal aspects to be considered in&nbsp;it and I also believe that there has to be legislation on it," she added.

Malhotra further emphasised that cases of domestic violence are involved in such relationships, about which people are unaware. Hence, she said that since there are so many legal incidents, this has to come through the law.

<h2>Constitution of the committee – a hope ahead for homosexuals' equal representation?</h2>

Speaking about the constitution of the committee which will look into the issues of homosexuals as was said by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, Malhotra said, "Once the committee does the preliminary exercise they will do legislative drafting and then they will table it in the Parliament. The committee constituted will certainly get people to represent the LGBTQ community from the well-established NGOs, which have been working in this direction and have good public representation."

She further emphasised how the government is sympathetic towards homosexuals and is willing to pave the path for them in the future which ensures equal rights to them as well.

"The very fact that today they are accepted socially and homosexuality has been decriminalised, is the biggest progress with respect to transgenders, homosexuals, gays and lesbians. There was so much social ostracism against them. Today, all that has gone. They are treated with a lot of sympathy and care. Same-sex marriage: Former SC judge Indu Malhotra explains why legislation is essential in India

At least 60 people, including students, were detained in the Indian capital city of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/amid-raging-israel-hamas-war-indias-delhi-placed-on-security-alert-646205">New Delhi</a> for organising a pro-Palestinian demonstration demanding diplomatic support for Palestine and denouncing Israel’s actions in Gaza, on Monday (Oct 16).&nbsp;

This comes after Israel declared war against Hamas after the Palestinian militant group launched a surprise against southern Israel over a week ago.&nbsp;

The Delhi police said that they had detained around 60 people for not taking prior permission for the protest, reported news agency PTI. The demonstration was held by the CPI (ML)-backed All India Students Association (AISA) and other student organisations.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly expressed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/people-of-india-stand-by-israel-pm-modi-tells-netanyahu-in-call-644906">support for Israel</a>.&nbsp;

After his previous call with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu, the Indian PM took to X and said, “People of India stand firmly with Israel in this difficult hour. India strongly and unequivocally condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations”.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened at Jantar Mantar?</h2>

According to PTI, the protesters, most of them students and teachers from Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University, took to Jantar Mantar and started raising slogans ‘Justice for Palestine,’ and ‘Gaza we are with you.’

“We are holding a demonstration and demanding diplomatic support for Palestine and actions against Israel, for violating human rights,” said Hemant, one of the demonstrators, as quoted by the news agency.&nbsp;

Subsequently, the Delhi police rounded the protesters up in buses and took them to an undisclosed location. The AISA has since released a statement demanding their release.&nbsp;

<h2>Support for Palestine</h2>

The CPI (ML) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya also visited the Palestine Embassy to express solidarity on behalf of the Indian people, in New Delhi, on Monday.

&nbsp;“We came here to express our solidarity on behalf of (the) Indian people. Right now, we all know whatever happened on the 7th of October but it has not stopped there. Right now what is happening in Gaza is nothing short of a very openly declared genocide,” Bhattacharya told ANI.&nbsp;

Adnan Abu al Haija, Ambassador of Palestine in New Delhi following his meeting with some leaders of the opposition, including a few Members of Parliament (MP) told ANI, “We discussed the situation in Gaza and in Palestine in general and they presented their solidarity with the Palestinian people…”&nbsp;

He added, “We hope India will play a good role in stopping the siege on our people of Gaza and putting pressure on the Israeli government for humanitarian aid to our people in Gaza…”

<h2>India’s stance on Israel-Hamas war</h2>

Since the incumbent PM took office New Delhi has moved closer to Israel despite historically backing the Palestinian cause which is partly thanks to the Netanyahu government.

However, opposition parties in New Delhi including the Indian National Congress (INC) or Congress party reiterated their support for Palestinians in a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/indias-congress-party-extends-support-for-palestinians-amid-hamas-attack-on-israel-calls-for-ceasefire-644564">recent resolution</a> passed a week ago.&nbsp;

On Thursday, (Oct 12) the Indian foreign ministry condemned the attack by Hamas&nbsp;in Israel as a "terrorist attack" and reiterated its longstanding position for an independent Palestine.

India: Dozens detained by police for staging pro-Palestine protests without due permission

'He said, she said': Outlandish arguments, groundbreaking statements from India's same-sex marriage trial

Indian Member of Parliament Nishikant Dubey from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Sunday (Oct 15) accused Mahua Moitra from the opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) of taking bribes for asking questions in the Parliament and called for her “immediate suspension”. Responding to the allegations, the TMC leader has said that she would welcome any probe into the claim.&nbsp;

<h2>What are the allegations?</h2>

In a letter to the speaker of Lok Sabha (lower house of parliament) Om Birla, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey demanded setting up an inquiry committee against Moitra and sought her “immediate suspension” alleging that he has “irrefutable evidence” that bribes were exchanged between her and businessman Darshan Hiranandani.&nbsp;

Dubey said&nbsp;that the TMC leader received “cash” and “gifts” to ask questions in Parliament claiming that out of Moitra’s recent 61 questions, 50 “shockingly seek information, with the intent of protecting or perpetuating business interests of Shri Darshan Hiranandani and his Company.”

“The questions were also often focused on the Adani Group, another business conglomerate, Hiranandani Group was bidding for business against,” the letter added.&nbsp;

The “entire conspiracy” doesn't end there, the BJP MP wrote, and said that the TMC leader also “vehemently targeted” PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah by “constantly referencing…the Adani Group giving the impression that she was critical of the Government, possibly with the intention of seeking cover against her clandestine criminal operation”.

In the letter, Dubey also wrote how he and “several other Members of Parliament, were always perplexed&nbsp;as to why this ‘shouting brigade’ of TMC led by Smt Mahua Moitra indulges in such tactics, which infringes on the constitutional rights of other members, to debate and discuss the issues of common people and policies of the Government.”&nbsp;

The BJP MP said that the TMC leader is in clear ‘Breach of Privilege’ and ‘Contempt of the House’ and her actions would also attract penalty for a criminal offence under Section 120-A of the Indian Penal Code and went on to call for an inquiry committee to be set up for the case.&nbsp;

“I also request you that during the interregnum period, i.e. constitution of an ‘Inquiry Committee’ and its submission of Report, Smt Mahua Moitra may be immediately suspended from the services of the House,” wrote Dubey.&nbsp;

<h2>TMC leader responds</h2>

In response to these allegations, Moitra in a series of posts on X&nbsp;said CBI is welcome to investigate “right after they finish investigating Adani’s offshore money trail, over-invoicing, benami account”.

“If Adani group is relying on dodgy dossier created by dubious Sanghis &amp; circulated by fake degree wallahs to either shut me up or bring me down I would advise them not to waste their time. Use your lawyers wisely,” said the TMC leader in a separate post.&nbsp;

India: BJP MP claims Mahua Moitra took bribes to ask questions in Parliament; TMC leader welcomes probe

The Indian Army is closely observing the ongoing Israel-Hamas war to draw lessons in order to enhance India's defence, said a report in The Hindu. The report, citing defence sources, said that use of power gliders by Hamas militants to cross over to the Israeli side is in particular focus.

“The aerial attacks, especially the use of power gliders, is of particular concern for us. The idea of the study is to quickly draw the lessons relevant to our context,” the publication quoted a source as saying.

Use of power gliders was one of the tactics used by Hamas militants during their initial attack on October 7. The gliders enhanced the element of surprise in the Hamas attack as its fighters were able to bypass physical barriers on ground and make their way into Israeli territory unobstructed.

India has for decades combated terrorist threat, particularly cross-border terrorism from Pakistan. Indian security services have had to constantly find ways to thwart terrorist infiltration by keeping up with unorthodox ways often employed by terrorists.

In this light, the Israel-Hamas war is being closely studied by Indian security apparatus.

Another technique used by Hamas in the ongoing war is the use of inexpensive drones to counter costly, conventional military weapons. In one of the videos of&nbsp;Hamas attack, a drone was seen dropping a bomb on Israel's Merkawa tank and destroying it. The tank reportedly costs USD 3 million. Tanks are highly armoured from all sides but are relatively vulnerable from the top.

Indian Army studying Israel-Hamas war to draw lessons, upgrade strategy: Report

ISRO chairman S Somanath on Sunday (Oct 15) said that the experts, who were given the task of developing complex rocket missions in the United States, appealed to India to share space technology with them after seeing the development of Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft. &nbsp;

Speaking at an event in Rameswaram, he said that the times have changed and India has the capacity to build the best of the best rockets and devices, and this is the reason why Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has opened the space sector to private players.&nbsp;

Somanath was speaking to students during a programme organised by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s Foundation to commemorate the late former president's 92nd birth anniversary.&nbsp;

“Our country is a very powerful nation. You understand that? Our knowledge and intelligence level in the country is one of the best in the world. In Chandrayaan-3, when we designed and developed the spacecraft, we invited experts from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Nasa-JPL, who do all the rockets and most difficult mission," the ISRO chief said.&nbsp;

“About five to six people from Nasa-JPL came (to Isro headquarters) and we explained to them about Chandrayaan-3. That was before the soft landing took place (on August 23). We explained how we designed it and how our engineers made it, and how we are going to land on the Moon’s surface, and they just said, 'no comments. everything is going to be good'," he added. &nbsp;

<h2>'Sell these advanced scientific instruments to the US'</h2>

JPL is a research and development laboratory, which is getting funded by NASA and is being managed by the California Institute of Technology (CALTECH) in the US.

“They (US space experts) also said one thing, 'look at the scientific instruments, they are very cheap. Very easy to build and they are advanced. How did you build it? Why don’t you sell this to America,' they were asking," he stated. &nbsp;"So you (students) can understand how times have changed. We are capable of building the best equipment, the best devices, and the best rockets in India. That is why our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has opened the space sector," Somanath added.

Impressed by Chandrayaan-3, American space experts wanted India to sell its tech to US: ISRO chief

Former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar has slammed the national men's cricket team for the 'humiliating' defeat they suffered at the hands of arch-rivals India at the ongoing ODI World Cup on Saturday (Oct 14).&nbsp;

Talking about India's performance on his YouTube channel, Akhtar said the Men-in-Blue beat Pakistan like they were a team of kids and claimed he couldn't bear to watch it.

"Pakistan's humiliation is in front of us. India beat Pakistan like kids. I couldn't watch it. Rohit Sharma played ruthlessly," said Akhtar.

Akhtar, also known as "Rawalpindi Express" was full of praise for Rohit Sharma, adding that the Indian captain had taken his revenge. &nbsp;

"The kind of innings he played, he humiliated Pakistan’s bowling attack. He took revenge for the last two years when he didn’t get many runs. Good to see Rohit Sharma back, he did right to smash the bowlers. What’s the need to finish the game in the last overs and take it deep? Rohit hammered the bowlers,” said Akhtar.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cwc-from-being-hospitalised-to-getting-99-match-ready-heres-how-shubman-gill-got-fit-in-time-for-pak-game-647137">Also read |&nbsp;CWC: From being hospitalised to getting 99% match-ready, here's how Shubman Gill got fit in time for PAK game</a>

<h2>India can repeat history: Akhtar</h2>

The former speedster said he believed that India was on course to repeat the heroics of the 2011 World Cup when they went on to win the marquee tournament.&nbsp;

"I am beginning to believe India is about to repeat that history of 2011 World Cup. If they don't mess up in the semi-finals, India is really there to win this World Cup. So well done India. You have done wonderfully well. You destroyed us, demoralised us and decimated us," said Akhtar.

India&nbsp;won the toss in the high-voltage encounter and decided to field first. The decision, however, seemed to backfire initially as the pitch looked a belter for batting. Pakistani batters got off to a decent start as well and the contest was balanced up until the 30th over.&nbsp;

However, from thereon, the pair of Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah mounted their attack which left the Pakistani batters clueless as to what hit them. After the middle and lower-middle order capitulated, Pakistan bowed out by putting only 199 on board.&nbsp;

The target was never going to be enough against the stacked Indian batting lineup and Rohit Sharma came out with an ultra-positive mindset to bat Pakistan out of the contest in the first 10 overs. The Indian captain did just that as the two-time World Cup champions, easily coasted to victory.&nbsp;

After Saturday's victory, India have climbed atop the points table and look all set to lock in a spot in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Pakistan have a difficult assignment next, as they take on Australia at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. &nbsp;

Last week, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that Gagne had confirmed her participation at the Parliament-20 meeting being hosted by India on October 12-14.

"The Canadian Speaker is not attending the Summit. Schedules keep changing," news agency PTI quoted parliamentary sources as saying.

Earlier, Birla said that he would raise "several issues" in his informal talks with the Speaker of the Canadian Senate.

"We will discuss issues that have been listed for the summit. Other issues will be discussed informally," he said on being asked whether the matter of using the Canadian Parliament to level allegations against India will be raised with the Canadian presiding officer.

<h2>India-Canada row</h2>

A diplomatic standoff erupted between India and Canada after PM Trudeau suggested in his address to the House of Commons that India might be linked to the death of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. Ottawa also expelled a senior Indian diplomat even as the investigation continues.

However, India has strongly rejected these claims, while reiterating its adherence to the rule of law. New Delhi has also called on Ottawa to check the rampant anti-India activities on Canadian soil and respect the territorial integrity of India.
