India's record chase of 406 against the West Indies in the second ODI of the three-match series on Wednesday (Sep 30) has not amused head coach Gautam Gambhir at all. India surpassed the 400+ target with 39 balls and eight wickets to spare. This is also only the second time in the history of ODI cricket that a 400+ total has been chased successfully, with the only other instance being South Africa chasing down 434 against Australia. During the innings, Kohli, who plays mostly 50-over format cricket for India, crossed 15,000 ODI runs - only the second player ever to do so after Sachin Tendulkar (18,426). This was Kohli's 55th ODI ton - already a record in the format - and he hit nine sixes in the innings, the highest for him in an ODI. Kohli masterclass thumps West Indies Chasing 296, India started strong with skipper Shubman Gill adding 74 runs for the first wicket with former skipper Rohit Sharma (32), who was the first wicket to fall. Gill and Kohli then added 151 runs for the second wicket before Gill got out for 110 - his 10th ODI hundred. Needing 71 runs off the last 16 overs, Kohli scored the bulk of the runs with Ruturaj Gaikwad at the other end, who remained not out on 13 off 16 balls. The visitors started with a 135-run opening partnership between John Campbell (62) and Justin Greaves (101) before Kuldeep Yadav reeled them in. No other West Indies batter could cross the 25-run mark after the openers except Amir Jangoo, who scored an unbeaten 58 off 43 balls. Kuldeep finished with 4/40 in 10 overs, while Prasidh Krishna took 2/60 and Nitish Kumar Reddy picked up 1/45. Records Kohli broke with his hundred against West Indies After scoring the match-winning hundred, Kohli told broadcasters: "I got a challenge at this stage of my career to kind of up the ante and, you know, play a gear higher and that was exciting for me to work on. Again, it excites you when you have to unlock a new version at this stage of your career, which will eventually help, you know, anything that you play for, be it playing for India or in the IPL. It's really helped me a lot to play with a free mind and I think that's what's working for me." Below are the records Kohli broke during his innings: Kohli's 7,006 ODI runs in India are the most for a player in a single country, going past Sachin Tendulkar's 6,976 runs, also in India. Kohli now has 60 List A tons, the same as Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli (15,080) is only the second player ever to score 15,000+ ODI runs, behind Sachin Tendulkar (18,426). This was Kohli's 10th ODI hundred against the West Indies, the joint-most by a player against a single country, equalling his own record of 10 ODI tons against Sri Lanka.

Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 139 (88) led India to an 8-wicket win over West Indies. He hit 9 sixes, completed 15,000 ODI runs, and logged his 55th ton as India chased 296 with 50 balls to spare.

West Indies coach Daren Sammy is looking at the upcoming ODI series against India as an opportunity to fine-tune the team ahead of their ODI World Cup 2027 qualifiers in February. The West Indies have failed to qualify directly for the ODI World Cup for the second time in a row, after only the top eight teams - apart from co-hosts South Africa - were given direct entry for the marquee event. Sammy, however, has accepted the reality and views the India series as a chance to measure the team and improve from there. T20 World Cup 2026: Samson smashes India into semis with statement win over West Indies at Eden Gardens

India are a win away from reaching the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026 after thrashing Zimbabwe on Thursday (Feb 26) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The 72-run win means India just need a win on Sunday against the West Indies in their final Super 8 Group 1 match and take another step towards defending their T20 World Cup title. However, there could be one factor that could seal the fate for the Men in Blue on Sunday and it is not the form of their openers nor the opposition, the West Indies.<h2>THIS factor can stop India from reaching the semis</h2>After Thursday’s result, both India and the West Indies have two points each with a game in hand. However, for the time being, both teams are separated by the net run rate (NRR), with West Indies sitting above India. The Caribbean side has an NRR of 1.791 while India sit third with an NRR of -0.100. Since a win for either side will see them through on four points, NRR won’t be an obstacle for either side.&nbsp;ALSO READ | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/from-chris-gayle-to-brendon-mccullum-5-batters-to-score-fastest-t20-world-cup-hundreds-rilee-rossouw-ahmed-shehzad-1768553361691">From Chris Gayle to Brendon McCullum, 5 batters to score fastest T20 World Cup hundreds</a>&nbsp;However, if rain plays spoilsport in Kolkata on Sunday (Mar 1) and the match is washed out, both teams will settle for one point each. The Indian cricket team is all set to face the West Indies in the second Test match as they look to complete a clean sweep against the Caribbeans. However, one eye will also be on the World Test Championship (WTC 2025-27) as Shubman Gill and Co look to maintain momentum. Currently sitting third, India will have important fixtures, but where would they lie as the Delhi Test match could have a significant impact. So here are all permutations explained of what the WTC table would look like once the latest contest concludes, as the two-time runners-up occupy third spot with a win PCT of 55.56 in six matches.<h2>Scenario 1: India win</h2>In case India win the Delhi Test, Gill and Co will have a win percentage of 61.90 as their record will read , four wins, one draw and two defeats. However, despite this, India won’t leapfrog Australia and Sri Lanka. India’s injured wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is likely to miss the upcoming home Test against the West Indies as he recovers from a foot injury. India lost the&nbsp;last match of the five-match T20I series&nbsp;against West Indies, in Florida, on Sunday (August 13) and conceded the series 2-3. This was India's first-ever bilateral series loss to the Windies, one comprising&nbsp;a minimum of three games, since their 1-4 loss in 2006 during the five ODIs in the Caribbean island. After the series loss, head coach Rahul Dravid admitted to India's lack of batting depth as they batted only till No. 7.

After the final T20I, Dravid said, "I think in terms of our squad here, probably it didn't allow us the flexibility in some ways to be able to change the combinations a little bit. But I think going forward, we've got to look at certain areas in which we can get better. Finding depth in our batting has been an area we are trying to address. We are trying to do the best we possibly can but that's certainly an area we can look at, how we cannot weaken our bowling attack but ensure we have a certain amount of depth in batting."

While Dravid's concerns were regarding the current T20I team, veteran Indian spinner R Ashwin reacted to it and came up with an interesting suggestion for Rohit Sharma-led Team India ahead of the upcoming home ODI World Cup, in October-November.

<h2>'You need someone like Shardul Thakur at No. 8'</h2>

Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "You don't want your tail to start so early, and that's why you need someone like Shardul Thakur to come and smash a few balls at No. 8. But you should play your best batters and bowlers to win a match. At the same time, if you needed 36 to win from 30 balls when you are six down, you should have the ability to close down such games as well. So, that is the conundrum that India will go into ahead of the World Cup. If they play Kuldeep and Chahal together, then it gets to a situation where Kuldeep has to bat at No. 8."

At present, India's ODI setup is eagerly waiting to know the fitness status of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, two of their prominent middle-order batters, ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI WC at home. Currently, India have injury concerns with regard to the middle and lower order whereas they will also aim for more batting depth in the upcoming ICC event.

After the Windies tour, India is now gearing for three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, before the focus shifts to the 50-over Asia Cup, starting on August 30 in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. It will serve as a dress rehearsal for the ODI WC.

Venkatesh Prasad BLASTS Team India after woeful West Indies series defeat, tweets 'needs to improve skillset'

India’s head coach Rahul Dravid has highlighted a key area missing from the batting line-up after their embarrassing 2-3 defeat against the West Indies on Sunday, August 13. India, who lost the deciding contest by eight wickets in Florida, were offered a reality check by the hosts. According to Dravid, India's lack of depth in batting was the major reason for their embarrassing series defeat. India had earlier levelled the series at 2-2 despite trailing 0-2 at one stage.

<h2>Dravid highlights key area</h2>

"I think in terms of our squad here, probably it didn't allow us the flexibility in some ways to be able to change the combinations a little bit," Dravid said in the post-match press conference.

"But I think going forward, we've got to look at certain areas in which we can get better. Finding depth in our batting has been an area we are trying to address. We are trying to do the best we possibly can but that's certainly an area we can look at, how we cannot weaken our bowling attack but ensure we have a certain amount of depth in batting,” the Indian coach added.

Needing to win the final T20I to clinch the series, Dravid’s team put up 165 runs in 20 overs after Suryakumar Yadav scored 61 off 45 balls. Tilak Varma (27) and Hardik Pandya (14) gave Yadav&nbsp;good support but it was not enough to mount a big challenge for the hosts in Florida. In reply, West Indies completed the chase in 18 overs to win the contest and the series.

"As these games are going on, and scores are becoming bigger and bigger if you look at West Indies, they had Alzarri Joseph coming in at No. 11 and he can hit a mean ball. So you have sides that have that depth. Obviously, we have some challenges on that front and we need to work on that. It's certainly something that this series has shown us and we need to build on that depth,” Dravid further added.

India’s head coach Rahul Dravid has highlighted a key area missing from the batting line-up after their embarrassing 2-3 defeat against the West Indies on Sunday, August 13.

#TeamIndia put in a fight but it was West Indies who won the fifth & final T20I to win the series 3-2.#WIvIND pic.twitter.com/19KVS0MBHJ — BCCI (@BCCI) August 13, 2023 × Dravid highlights key area "I think in terms of our squad here, probably it didn't allow us the flexibility in some ways to be able to change the combinations a little bit," Dravid said in the post-match press conference. Tilak Varma (27) and Hardik Pandya (14) gave Yadav good support but it was not enough to mount a big challenge for the hosts in Florida. IND vs WI: Rahul Dravid highlights 'depth in batting' as key missing area after embarrassing series defeat

India lost the five-match T20I series to West Indies, in Florida, on Sunday (August 13). Having levelled the five T20Is after being 0-2 down, the Hardik Pandya-led Men in Blue were expected to continue with the winning momentum and clinch the series, however, Rovman Powell-led Windies were clinical in the final T20I to win by eight wickets.

This became India's first-ever five-match T20I series overall. Meanwhile, West Indies won their maiden bilateral series (minimum of three games) versus the opponent since 2006, when they defeated Rahul Dravid &amp; Co. 4-1 in the Caribbean island.

Thus, many fingers have been raised on Hardik's leadership whereas head coach Rahul Dravid is also being criticised left, right and centre.&nbsp;

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra also joined in and analysed Hardik's captaincy after the WI T20Is. Chopra pointed out how Axar Patel was underutilised throughout the series (did not bat in third and fourth T20I and completed his full quota of overs in only two games) and feels India played with only ten players.

<h2>'It almost seems like we played with 10 players'</h2>

On his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "Axar Patel was bowling the first over in the last match and in this match, Axar Patel bowled one over in total. The way Axar Patel has been used, we really don't know. It almost seems like we played with 10 players."

He further asserted, “You are saying that you will get Kuldeep Yadav to bowl if Nicholas Pooran comes, or else you will get Axar to complete his overs. What will you do if Nicholas Pooran comes up the order? He came up the order when Arshdeep Singh dismissed Kyle Mayers once again. Axar Patel is not being used at all."

“You have made him (Mukesh) a totally old-ball bowler. Arshdeep Singh was bowled two overs in which he picked up a wicket but he didn't get overs after that. I have got no idea whatsoever about the bowling changes and I won't even try to explain,” a baffled&nbsp;Chopra added.

A lot has been said and written about Hardik's captaincy after India lost the five T20Is. While he claimed four wickets in the series, going wicketless in the last three games, his batting strike rate added to his criticism (striking at 110).

'India played with 10 players': Aakash Chopra baffled with Hardik Pandya's tactics after WI T20Is loss

Hardik Pandya-led India lost the five-match T20I series to hosts West Indies with an eight-wicket loss, in Florida, on Sunday (August 13). Being 0-2 down, the Men in Blue displayed a commendable effort to level the series but were blown away by Rovman Powell-led Windies in the series decider to lose their first-ever five-match series in the format.

In the series, the likes of Yashavi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma and Mukesh Kumar made a mark, however, questions were raised over India's lack of batting depth. The visitors played as many as four No. 11s throughout the series and it led to Windies' series triumph eventually. In the final T20I, India lost early wickets which exposed their tail and they only managed a modest 165 for 9.

In reply, West Indies made a mockery of the run-chase, finishing proceedings in 17 overs with eight wickets in hand, thanks to Brandan Kings' 85 not out and Nicholas Pooran's entertaining 47.

Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has been left unimpressed with India's long tail and questioned their batting preparations for next year's T20 World Cup, in West Indies and USA.

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Jaffer pointed out, "Losing Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill within that powerplay, that was a big setback. We all know that India only bats till No. 7. The last four don’t contribute much at all. They don’t have that boundary-hitting or six-hitting ability. When you lose two to three wickets, the guys coming in can’t play freely. It adds a lot of pressure."

Jaffer further asserted, "If we are five down, the tail starts coming. That’s exactly what has happened in the games that we have lost. That is a big concern for India. The batting hasn’t clicked. Suryakumar Yadav played well, but nobody else chipped in."

"The top seven has to bat the bulk of the overs. Sometimes, when you go with that mindset, it doesn’t help you. India need to address this issue. Within 10 months’ time, India will be playing the World Cup here. This can’t be the template. Our batting needs to come till at least No. 8, possibly No. 9 - somebody who can tonk the ball," he added.

After the series loss, head coach Rahul Dravid admitted to India's lack of batting depth.

He said, "I think going forward, we've got to look at certain areas in which we can get better. Finding depth in our batting has been an area we are trying to address. We are trying to do the best we possibly can but that's certainly an area we can look at, how we cannot weaken our bowling attack but ensure we have a certain amount of depth in batting."

Captain Hardik's low returns also didn't help India's cause in the series. The 29-year-old ended with 77 runs at a woeful strike-rate of 110. He struck at 77.77 with a struggling 18-ball 14 in the series finale.

Ind vs WI: 'This can't be the template': Wasim Jaffer unimpressed with India's batting for T20 World Cup 2024

From colossal failure in SA to WI T20I series loss: Team India's shocking LOWS in Rahul Dravid's tenure

India skipper Hardik Pandya has taken responsibility for the team’s embarrassing 2-3 T20I series defeat against the West Indies on Sunday, August 13. Pandya, leading the Indian side on Sunday, failed to capitalise on a good start that cost them big time. The Men in Blue only managed to score 165 and were beaten by eight wickets in the deciding contest to win the series. According to the skipper, he was not able to capitalise on the situation, leading to the defeat.

<h2>Hardik takes responsibility</h2>

"If you see, we lost that period post ten overs since I came [into bat]. I think I was not able to capitalise [on] the situation and took my time and was not able to finish. I think the boys really played well. I think, at that period when I went in, I kind of did not play exactly how it was supposed to be," Pandya said in the post-match presentation on Sunday.

The Indian skipper scored 14 runs off 18 deliveries and looked off–colour with the bat, while with the ball he gave away 32 runs in three overs. Interestingly, Hardik has scalped only five wickets during the West Indies tour while failing to deliver with the bat. With a best of unbeaten 70 in the third ODI, he has scored 169 runs in seven innings.

Despite the defeat, Hardik had wonderful things to say about the youngsters who showed courage and stepped up when the team needed them the most. He was full of praise for the likes of Tilak Varma, Mukesh Kumar, and Yashasvi Jaiswal after they delivered for the side when required.&nbsp;

"It's very wonderful, they got heart. That is something which is very important in international cricket. You mentioned Jaiswal, Tilak, and Mukesh but every youngster who is coming up, they are showing character. They have the belief. That is something I've seen very often now. Kudos to them, for the way they came out and expressed themselves, took responsibility. I couldn't be happier as captain that all the youngsters are coming up and putting their hands up and saying, 'you know what I got you',” Hardik added.

<h2>India’s next quest</h2>

India’s next quest takes them to Ireland where they will play in three-match T20I series under the captaincy of Jasprit Bumrah. The Indian team will leave in two groups with one traveling from Florida and the other from Mumbai. Players part of the Ireland and West Indies tour will travel to Dublin on Tuesday, while Bumrah and Co part of the Ireland series will leave from Mumbai.

India vs West Indies, 5th T20I: Will rain play a big role in series decider in Florida?

Hardik Pandya-led India thrashed West Indies by nine wickets to win the fourth and penultimate T20I, in Florida, and level the five-match series on Saturday (August 12). Opting to bat first, Rovman Powell-led Windies piled up 178 for 8&nbsp;courtesy of Shai Hope's 45 and Shimron Hetmyer's 61. The total proved to be inadequate as Yashasvi Jaiswal (84 not out) and Shubman Gill (77) stitched a mammoth 165-run first-wicket stand to chase down the score in 17 overs.

With the ball, Arshdeep Singh (3 for 38) and Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 26) did the job for India to keep the Windies below the 200-run mark before Jaiswal-Gill stood tall. The opening duo ran hard between wickets and found the boundaries at regular intervals, smarting targetting the bowlers, to take India to a&nbsp;dominating win. After the clash, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa made a big claim.

<h2>'They can be something as great as Sachin Tendulkar-Sourav Ganguly opening the batting'</h2>

Uthappa said on Jio Cinema after the match, "Everyone who plays for India are equally capable and have equal ability but the way Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill bat in tandem; they can bat for each other as well and they need to find that space. Hardik Pandya-led India thrashed West Indies by nine wickets to win the fourth and penultimate T20I, in Florida, and level the five-match series on Saturday (August 12). Opting to bat first, Rovman Powell-led Windies piled up 178 for 8 courtesy of Shai Hope's 45 and Shimron Hetmyer's 61. The opening duo ran hard between wickets and found the boundaries at regular intervals, smarting targetting the bowlers, to take India to a dominating win. After the clash, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa made a big claim. 'They can be something as great as Sachin Tendulkar-Sourav Ganguly opening the batting' Uthappa said on Jio Cinema after the match, "Everyone who plays for India are equally capable and have equal ability but the way Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill bat in tandem; they can bat for each other as well and they need to find that space. If they do, they are going to be a very dangerous pair for India in years to come. It will be a hot pair and they can be something as great as a Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly opening the batting." He added, "They need to figure a few things out and if they do, they will do great things for India." IND vs WI 4th T20I: Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal help India level series with dominating win

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has extended his advice to Shubman Gill after his string of failures in the ongoing series against the West Indies. With eight hundreds in 2023, Gill was in a rich vein of form going into the series against the Caribbean side but has seen his stock go down with poor performances. According to Jaffer, Gill needs to adapt to the new surfaces early if he is to achieve success away from home.

<h2>Jaffer’s advice to Gill</h2>

"These West Indies surfaces are like that, you have to wait for it and can't just keep hitting on the rise which Shubman likes. But one thing he needs to understand is he is not going to get conditions like Ahmedabad everywhere. So the better he gets used to the other surfaces, and adapts to the surfaces it's going to do him wonders," Jaffer said on ESPNCricinfo.

In his last six innings, Gill has been dismissed for under 10 runs on four occasions. His highest score on the tour is 85 runs he scored in the third ODI at Tarouba and has been far from convincing. Gill has scored 187 runs in nine innings during the West Indies tour and has been urged by a few fans to be dropped after the lean patch.

"Shubman is not somebody who goes from ball one. He is not that kind of a player so he takes his time at the start. He has a habit of reaching towards the ball when the ball is not coming on," Jaffer added.

Tilak Varma has made heads turn in the Indian cricket&nbsp;fraternity with a confident start to his international career during the ongoing five T20Is between India and West Indies. After three games, he has had scores of 39, 51, and 49* and has played his part with a lot of maturity, understanding the match situation. Thus, former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha suggested his inclusion in the ODI setup. Now, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad has shared his take on Varma's addition to the ODI squad for the forthcoming home World Cup.

In an interaction with the news agency PTI, Prasad said, "First of all, we should know whether Shreyas Iyer is fit or not. So, in case, if Shreyas Iyer is ruled out, in the present scenario, one guy who fits the bill is Tilak Varma, because of his versatility, because of his ability to play fast bowling and spin bowling and also because of his ability to switch the gears as and when required. More than anything else, we don't have a left-hander at the top of the order. So all these things will definitely go in favour of Tilak Varma."

<h2>'He is someone like Michael Bevan'</h2>

Prasad further made a big statement and said, "That’s the kind of role he can adapt to very quickly. He understands the situation well, he rotates strikes, he is hard to stop from scoring, and he can hold the innings together. He is someone like Michael Bevan."

"If you see his domestic cricket also, it’s close to 55 or 60, his average in the one-day format. He has got a pretty bright chance to get into the squad if Shreyas Iyer is found unfit," the former Indian cricketer added.

Prasad also acknowledged the role of Varma's IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians for the left-hander's incredible rise in the last two years. In this regard, he said: "I would say he has developed phenomenally in the last two years. He is a phenomenal cricketer, there’s no two ways about it. He played U19 for India. But credit should definitely go to Mumbai Indians for the way they have groomed him."

"The amount of opportunities he has got over the last two years, the way MI has shown faith in him, it’s tremendous. A winning team like Mumbai Indians showing faith will obviously boost the confidence of a young cricketer like him," he concluded.

Apart from Prasad, the likes of Wasim Jaffer and R Ashwin have also backed Varma to be added to India's squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup. India will kick off their campaign in the showpiece event on October 08, versus Australia in Chennai, with the tournament opener to be held on October 05, in Ahmedabad, between defending champions England and New Zealand.

India managed to keep the five-match T20I series alive versus hosts West Indies in the third match on Tuesday (August 08), in Guyana. After losing the first two encounters by a narrow margin, Hardik Pandya &amp; Co. showed a lot of hunger to turn the tides in the third T20I. Opting to bat first, Rovman Powell-led West Indies posted 159 for 7 with&nbsp;Kuldeep Yadav restricting the Windies courtesy of an impressive 3 for 28. In reply, India rode on Suryakumar Yadav's blistering 83 and Tilak Varma's 49 not out to cruise to a seven-wicket win with 13 balls to spare.

While Kuldeep and Surya made a strong statement in India's resounding win, Tilak Varma impressed once again in Indian colours. The left-hander made his debut in international cricket during the five-match T20I series opener and has managed scores of 39, 51 and 49* to impress many in the cricketing fraternity. After his unbeaten knock in India's easy win in Guyana, former Indian off-spinner Pragyan Ojha has made a bold claim.&nbsp;

<h2>'Is there a possibility of expediting Tilak Varma's inclusion to help settle India's No. 4 in ODIs?'</h2>

"Is there a possibility of expediting #TilakVarma's inclusion to help settle the number 4 debate for #TeamIndia in ODIs? He appears promising, displays strong composure, and adds the advantage of being a left-handed batsman," Ojha said in a tweet.

Varma had a great run in IPL 2023, scoring 343 runs in 11 games at a strike rate of 164.11 Since his international debut, the 20-year-old has shown a lot of maturity in playing as per the situation and looks ready to hold the middle-order slot for long in the shorter formats. While he may not be inducted in the ODI setup at present, with Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. gearing up for this year's ODI World Cup, Varma looks certain to be a part of the Indian setup across formats after the mega event in India (in October-November).

At the post-match presentation, captain Hardik opined on Surya-Tilak's match-winning 87-run third-wicket stand and hailed the former in particular. He said, "As a group, we have decided to bat with seven batters and we have to take responsibility, like it happened today if the batters score runs then you don't need someone at number eight. As Surya mentioned, they (SKY and Tilak) play together and spend time together, good to have someone like SKY in the team and when he takes responsibility it sends a message to the others."

The final two games will be held in Florida, USA during the upcoming weekend. Currently, India&nbsp;trail West Indies 1-2 after the third T20I.

IND vs WI: Former Indian spinner calls for Tilak Varma's inclusion in ODI squad to end No. 4 debate

After guiding India to an impressive seven-wicket win over West Indies in the third T20I, in Guyana on Tuesday (August 08), Suryakumar Yadav admitted to his ODI numbers being 'quite poor' as he continues to pile runs consistently in T20Is.&nbsp;"If I'm honest, I know my numbers in one-day cricket are quite poor. There is no shame in admitting that. We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it," Surya told reporters after slamming a match-winning 41-ball 83 versus the Windies.&nbsp;

Now, former Indian opener-turned-commentator, Aakash Chopra, has opened up on Surya's ODI numbers and cited Rohit Sharma's late bloom in Tests, something which might inspire&nbsp;the former. On his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "Surya has candidly, honestly and openly accepted that his ODI record is really bad, it is nothing to be ashamed of, there is nothing to hide as well, and he already knows what everyone is saying."

"He also said that Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid have told him that he has to understand the format a little more. He is not the only one and he is not the first player as well who is taking a little time to shift from one format to the other," he further asserted.

<h2>'Rohit Sharma has fallen in love with Test cricket'</h2>

Chopra then shifted focus to the current Indian captain Rohit and his initial struggles in Tests before his resurgence&nbsp;in late 2019. "If you look at Rohit Sharma when he was playing in the middle-order in the initial phase of his career, you left he was not comfortable with the format. He used to bat well and then play a bad shot. People used to wonder why because everything was going well and then came the bad shot. This was at the start of his Test career. After he began opening, he understood the pulse of the format. Now it feels like Rohit has fallen in love with Test cricket. He needed some time to understand the pulse of the other format," Chopra added.

Prior to becoming the Indian opener in late 2019, Rohit struggled in the red-ball format due to inconsistency and injuries. However, he has turned it around&nbsp;since batting up the order. He has scored seven tons as an opener, with a best of 212, out of his ten centuries overall.&nbsp;

Thus, the former Indian cricketer-turned-expert has suggested Surya take a leaf from Rohit's book and give himself some time in the ODI format in order to understand the pulse of the game and then explode. It is to be noted that the right-hander has only managed&nbsp;511 runs -- with two fifties -- at an average of&nbsp;24.33 in 26 ODIs. It will be interesting to see if he makes the cut in India's Asia Cup squad, and later in the ODI World Cup line-up. He has been exceptional as a T20I batter, averaging over 45, but his ODI numbers need significant improvement.

Aakash Chopra cites Rohit Sharma's initial Test struggles to decode Suryakumar Yadav's ODI woes

After keeping India's hopes alive in the five-match T20Is with a blistering 83 in the third game, in Guyana on Tuesday (August 08), Suryakumar Yadav admitted to his ODI struggles. While the swashbuckling right-hander has been in top form in the shortest format of the game since his international debut, the same cannot be said about his ODI numbers. In 26 ODIs, Surya averages a poor 24.33, having managed only 511 runs with two fifties.

<h2>'ODIs&nbsp;one of the most challenging formats for me'</h2>

Following Hardik Pandya-led India's easy win in the third T20I versus West Indies, Player of the Match Surya said, "We've played so much T20 cricket now, that we have become habituated to it. We don't play as much one-day cricket anymore. That's one of the most challenging formats for me, because you need to have different gears. If too many wickets fall early on, you need to start off with a Test cricket-like approach. Then you go at run-a-ball and then take the T20 approach."

<section itemprop="articleBody">
"Right now, I'm trying to apply what the team management has told me about ODI cricket. I'm trying to take my time and do what the team requires of me. I'll try to keep the faith that the team has shown in me. In T20 cricket, we know what to do because we play so much of it. You just need to go and express your game," the Mumbai Indians (MI) batter stated.

Revealing the pep talk with regular captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid, SKY said, "Rohit and Rahul bhai have told me - this is not a format that you play a lot, you need to practice a bit on what can be done for the team. We want you to play 45 to 50 balls. That's the sign from the team management, now that's on me how I want to play my game if I'm batting in the last 15-18 overs. Now, that's in my hand how to make use of this opportunity. I need to bat as per the team requirement."

In KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer's absence, Surya has been given a long rope in India's middle-order in the ODI line-up. However, he has failed to get going and is yet to cement his spot. With India's squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, which commences later this month, to be announced soon, it will be interesting to see if SKY makes the cut. The 50-over Asia Cup will be followed by the ODI World Cup, later this year in India, thus, SKY needs to be consistent in the shorter format to remain regular.

Talking about the India-West Indies ongoing T20Is, Kuldeep Yadav (3 for 28), SKY (44-ball 83, laced with 10 fours and 4 sixes) and Tilak Verma (49 not out) starred in India's win as they now trail the hosts 1-2. The final two games will be held in Florida, USA over&nbsp;the weekend.
