Since last playing a dead-rubber during this year's Asia Cup, Arshdeep hasn't found a place in India's white-ball teams despite being their highest wicket-taker in the T20Is.

Team India is playing another white-ball game Down Under, and for the third time in this ongoing series, there are no signs of their highest wicket-taker in T20Is, Arshdeep Singh, in the playing XI. Although his absence from the recently concluded three-match ODI series is understandable, given he is not among the first-team picks in that format, the head coach and captain benching him for the first T20I in Canberra irked the fans, who took to social media to bash Gautam Gambhir for his ‘biased selection’. India is playing two seamers in the series opener, ace quick Jasprit Bumrah, who returns to the side, and Harshit Rana. Suryakumar Yadav lost the toss, with Australian captain Mitchell Marsh sending India out to bat first at the Manuka Oval. Upon announcing the team for the first of the five games, the Indian Cricket Fans were left shocked over Arshdeep’s omission. Although he hasn’t been part of Team India’s T20I setup lately, having been benched in most games in the Asia Cup this year, his credentials are too good not to consider him for selection. With 101 wickets in 65 contested matches, Arshdeep Singh leads the wickets tally for India in the shortest format, with Hardik Pandya, the second-highest wicket-taker in T20Is, also absent from the scene. Jasprit Bumrah, the ace quick, sits in the third place with 96 wickets and counting and the out-of-favour leggie Yuzvendra Chahal, who also has as many wickets (96) to his name, was not even considered for selection. Shubman Gill-led Indian Team took on the hosts at Headingley in the series opener, and despite having hit five centuries across both innings, they failed to capitalise on it. A Times of India (TOI) report confirms that Rana, added to the side as the backup quick following the intra-squad game between the senior side and India-A, did not travel with the team to Birmingham, which left on Wednesday morning and is said to be released and sent home. Meanwhile, Rana made his Test debut against Australia in the BGT opener late last year, picking Travis Head as his maiden Test wicket. He bagged two more in Perth, but never looked like threatening the Aussies across the remaining three innings he played on the tour. After India conceded the second Test in Adelaide, the management looked beyond him for the remainder of the tour. ‘Depth? Yes! Skill? No’ Barring Bumrah, who broke multiple records with his first-inning five-for in Leeds, neither of the pacers, including Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur, were anywhere close to backing up Bumrah with top-class bowling across two innings. Besides them, India has two pacers waiting in the wings for their turns – uncapped left-armer Arshdeep Singh and Test specialist Akash Deep Singh. Seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy can also offer his medium pace should he get the chance on this tour.

IPL 2025: Chahal casts magic 'spell' as Punjab Kings beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 16 runs in low-scoring thriller

<p>Former Australian cricket captain and ICC Hall of Famer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ricky-ponting">Ricky Ponting</a> has endorsed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/arshdeep-singh">Arshdeep Singh</a> as the ideal replacement for injured Jasprit Bumrah in India&rsquo;s pace attack for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.</p>
<p>India's preparations for the tournament took a significant hit when star pacer Bumrah was ruled out due to a back injury earlier this month. With their opening match against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20, India have limited time to finalise their bowling combination.</p>
<p>While young seamer Harshit Rana impressed during India's recent ODI series against England, Ponting believes Arshdeep&rsquo;s experience and skill set in T20 cricket make him the best candidate to partner <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohammed-shami">Mohammed Shami</a> with the new ball.</p>
<p><strong>Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/champions-trophy-2025-babar-azam-eyes-pakistan-glory-on-home-soil-8733626">Champions Trophy 2025: Babar Azam eyes Pakistan glory on home soil</a></strong></p>
<p>"I would go with the left-armer and I'd go with Arshdeep (to replace Bumrah)," Ponting was quoted saying on The ICC Review.</p>
<p>"We know how good he's been in T20 cricket. If you think about the skill set, he probably provides a similar skill set to what Bumrah does with the new ball and death overs, and that's what India will miss.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Ponting acknowledged Harshit Rana's promise but highlighted Arshdeep&rsquo;s superior ability at the death.</p>
<p>"That's taking nothing away from <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/harshit-rana">Harshit Rana</a> because I think he has a lot of talent and we know what he can do with the new ball. But I don't think his death skills are as good as what Arshdeep Singh&rsquo;s are," Ponting remarked.</p>
<p>The former Australian skipper emphasised the importance of having a left-arm bowler who can swing the new ball, especially against right-handed top orders in big tournaments.</p>
<p>Ponting also noted the depth in India&rsquo;s 15-player squad, suggesting that Hardik Pandya&rsquo;s all-round abilities could ease the pressure on Shami, while spinner Varun Chakravarthy might have a significant impact on the Champions Trophy.</p>
<p>&ldquo;I think (Varun) Chakravarthy can have a huge impact on the tournament as well for India. He&rsquo;s probably pretty much through his career been pigeonholed as a T20 bowler only, but with his variations and skill, he can be a game-changer," Ponting added.</p>
<h2>'India a formidable contender even sans Bumrah'</h2>
<p>Despite Bumrah's absence, Ponting believes India remain a formidable contender. &ldquo;Even with Bumrah not being there, yes, it's very hard to replace someone like that. But if any team can do it with the amount of talent that the Indians have got, it might be them,&rdquo; he said.</p>
<p>India&rsquo;s recent ODI series win over England also provided positive signs, with multiple batters finding form. Shubman Gill emerged as the top scorer, Shreyas Iyer anchored the middle order, and senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were among the runs.</p>
<p>"It&rsquo;s great to see Shreyas Iyer back in the team and playing well in the middle order. More importantly for India, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were back scoring runs and that's what they need going into big tournaments," Ponting observed.</p>
<p>He concluded by emphasizing the importance of momentum:&nbsp;&ldquo;Winning's a habit and to have that behind you, you can take some positives out of that. That confidence can carry over.&rdquo;</p>

Champions Trophy 2025: Not Harshit, former Australia captain says THIS bowler will be crucial for India

<p>Former India batter Shikhar Dhawan, India's top performer in the ICC tournament, says that Harshit Rana could be an X-factor in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Rana has been selected in the squad as a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah, who has been sidelined from the tournament due to a back injury.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"My concern is they are going to miss Jasprit Bumrah, there is no doubt he will be a big absence and I think they will feel it very strongly," Dhawan wrote in an ICC column.&nbsp;</p>

Champions Trophy: Shikhar Dhawan picks Harshit Rana as 'X' factor for India | Here's why

<p>Harshit Rana&rsquo;s ODI debut has perhaps ended any hopes of ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah returning to the white-ball team for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">ICC Champions Trophy 2025</a>, reckons cricketer-turned-broadcaster Aakash Chopra. Rana made his much-anticipated ODI debut against England in the recently-concluded Nagpur One-Dayer, which <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/ind-vs-eng-1st-odi-live-india-vs-england-1st-odi-nagpur-live-score-today-playing-xi-match-prediction-toss-pitch-report-liveblog-8694678" rel="dofollow">India won by four wickets</a>, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.</p>
<p>Despite having an experienced Arshdeep Singh waiting in the wings for his ODI comeback, India opting for Rana indicates they are preparing Bumrah&rsquo;s backup for the eight-team tournament starting February 19 in Pakistan.</p>
<p><strong>Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/ind-vs-eng-shreyas-iyer-reveals-he-wasnt-supposed-to-play-1st-odi-in-nagpur-virat-kohli-injury-update-8698266" rel="dofollow">IND vs ENG: 'I got a call from...,' Shreyas Iyer reveals he wasn't supposed to play 1st ODI in Nagpur</a></strong></p>
<p>The BCCI selectors named Bumrah just for the third and final ODI (on Feb 12), hoping for him to get some match practice in time for the first showpiece event of the year. Although the NCA doctors have yet to clear him of the back injury he sustained during the final Test Down Under (at the SCG), the selectors named him in the 15-man Champions Trophy squad.</p>
<p>However, with Team India&rsquo;s final squad announcement for the three-match England series, which saw the inclusion of mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, Bumrah&rsquo;s name was nowhere to be seen, indicating the selectors have been informed of his unavailability for the remainder of the white-ball season before IPL 2025 begins.</p>
<p>Speaking on the same lines on his YouTube Channel, Chopra &ndash; a former domestic giant and a seasoned broadcaster expressed his concerns over India going ahead without Bumrah in the Champions Trophy.</p>
<p>"Harshit Rana's debut tells me there are minimal chances of Jasprit Bumrah being available for the Champions Trophy," Chopra said. "If Bumrah is not there and you have to take Harshit as he is ahead of [Mohammed] Siraj at the moment, playing him without a debut would make your heart beat fast."</p>
<h2>Chopra questions Arshdeep&rsquo;s absence</h2>
<p>Rana made his white-ball debut in the ongoing England series. While his T20I debut in Pune was marred by a 'concussion-sub' controversy, his maiden ODI game made headlines for all the right reasons. Despite leaking 26 runs in his third over to Phil Salt (the most by an Indian debutant in ODIs), <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/ind-vs-eng-1st-odi-harshit-rana-takes-three-wickets-but-creates-unwanted-debut-record-8696333" rel="dofollow">Rana returned with three wickets for 53 runs in seven overs</a>, impressing everyone.</p>

<p>On the flip side, India&rsquo;s most successful T20I bowler, Arshdeep Singh, picked in the Champions Trophy squad, warmed the bench, raising questions over his place in the 50-over side with the ICC event looming.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"When will you get Arshdeep to make a comeback in ODI cricket? That is still a question looming large because he too hasn't played for a long time. However, Harshit's debut gives me an indication that Bumrah might not be there," Chopra added.</p>

Despite having an experienced Arshdeep Singh waiting in the wings for his ODI comeback, India opting for Rana indicates they are preparing Bumrah’s backup for the eight-team tournament starting February 19 in Pakistan. Also read | IND vs ENG: 'I got a call from...,' Shreyas Iyer reveals he wasn't supposed to play 1st ODI in Nagpur The BCCI selectors named Bumrah just for the third and final ODI (on Feb 12), hoping for him to get some match practice in time for the first showpiece event of the year. Although the NCA doctors have yet to clear him of the back injury he sustained during the final Test Down Under (at the SCG), the selectors named him in the 15-man Champions Trophy squad. However, with Team India’s final squad announcement for the three-match England series, which saw the inclusion of mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, Bumrah’s name was nowhere to be seen, indicating the selectors have been informed of his unavailability for the remainder of the white-ball season before IPL 2025 begins. Speaking on the same lines on his YouTube Channel, Chopra – a former domestic giant and a seasoned broadcaster expressed his concerns over India going ahead without Bumrah in the Champions Trophy. "Harshit Rana's debut tells me there are minimal chances of Jasprit Bumrah being available for the Champions Trophy," Chopra said. "If Bumrah is not there and you have to take Harshit as he is ahead of [Mohammed] Siraj at the moment, playing him without a debut would make your heart beat fast." Chopra questions Arshdeep’s absence Rana made his white-ball debut in the ongoing England series. While his T20I debut in Pune was marred by a 'concussion-sub' controversy, his maiden ODI game made headlines for all the right reasons. Despite leaking 26 runs in his third over to Phil Salt (the most by an Indian debutant in ODIs), Rana returned with three wickets for 53 runs in seven overs, impressing everyone. "When will you get Arshdeep to make a comeback in ODI cricket? That is still a question looming large because he too hasn't played for a long time. However, Harshit's debut gives me an indication that Bumrah might not be there," Chopra added. Meanwhile, India will face England in the second One-Dayer on Sunday (Feb 9) in Cuttack. Meanwhile, the fifth and final T20I will get underway at the Wankhede in Mumbai on Sunday (Feb 2). (With inputs from agencies)

BGT 2024-25: WATCH | Harshit Rana takes four wickets in six balls vs PM's XI in pink-ball practice game

<p>Harshit Rana revealed that Jasprit Bumrah's performance with the ball on day 1 of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test charged everyone up after India were bowled out for 150 in the first innings in Perth. Harshit joined the part when he bowled a peach to dismiss Travis Head for his maiden Test wicket on day 1.</p>

<p>"When someone gives you a start like Jassi bhaiya did yesterday, it creates an atmosphere where everyone is very charged up. Everyone starts thinking 'If he is doing it, we will too'. So that was a big thing that they were three wickets down when I came on to bowl. And I thought that I should also get some wickets because the faster they are bowled out, the better for us," he said after the second day's play.</p>

<p>Bumrah took four wickets on Friday (Nov 22) as Australia ended the first day's play on 67/7. On day 2 (Saturday, Nov 23), Bumrah completed his five-for while Rana took the remaining wickets to finish with 3/48 as Australia were bowled out for 104 in the first innings - trailing behind by&nbsp;46-run lead.</p>

Have a look at the video below: View this post on Instagram A post shared by cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) × Rana, however, just laughed at it and went on about his business. Later in the session, Rana eventually got the wicket of Starc as he finished with 3/48 in his maiden Test innings. Also Read: India's Yashasvi Jaiswal goes past Brendon McCullum on THIS list during Perth Test As for the match, India are firmly on top after the first two days of cricket. The Indian bowlers, especially Jasprit Bumrah, did a wonderful job of restricting Australia to 104 after posting 150 in their first innings. Bumrah took 5/30, his ninth away Test five-for, his 11th overall, surpassing several former greats, including Sir Andy Roberts, Allan Donald, Zaheer Khan and Denis Lillee. The visitors ended the day with 218 runs ahead in the second innings including the first 46-run first innings lead without losing a single wicket. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul stitched together an unbeaten 172 runs for the first wicket – the second-highest for India in Tests in Australia. Jaiswal was not out 90 by the end of the day's play while Rahul was unbeaten on 62. The pitch, which saw 17 wickets falling on the first day, eased out considerably on Saturday (Nov 23) and only three wickets fell on the day that too in the first session.

BGT 2024-25, Perth Test: WATCH | Aussie Mitchell Starc WARNS India's Harshit Rana for bowling short-ball

<p>The Indian captain for the first Test against Australia, Jasprit Bumrah, picked four&nbsp;wickets, including removing Usman Khawaja and veteran batter Steve Smith on successive balls to lead India’s comeback on day one in the Perth Test, with Mohammed Siraj and Harshit Rana chipping in with theirs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bumrah won the toss and elected to bat first; the Indian batters failed to score big in the first innings as they got all out on 150, with Josh Hazlewood being the architect, picking four wickets. In reply to India's first-inning total, Australia scored 67 for 7 at stumps on day one, trailing by 83 runs.</p>

BGT, Perth Test, Day 1: Jasprit Bumrah leads India’s comeback after batters disappoint in 1st innings

<p>Jasprit Bumrah-led India have opted to bat first in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 series opener at the Perth Stadium, Perth on Friday (Nov 22). Nitish Reddy and Harshit Rana have been included in the playing XI but the visitors have no R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja as Washington Sundar, who had a great run versus New Zealand in the home series last month, is the lone spinner for the visitors.</p>

<p>At the coin toss, stand-in captain Bumrah said, "We are going to bat first, looks like a good wicket. Very confident with our preparation. We played a Test match here in 2018 so we know what to expect. The wicket gets quicker. Nitish makes his debut. We have 4 quicks and Washi is the lone spinner."</p>

<p>It was reported earlier that India would go in with Nitish Reddy and Harshit. The latter, who plays for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL, impressed one and all in the practice sessions Down Under whereas Nitish will serve as the fourth pacer, along with his handy batting abilities.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Harshit and Nitish were presented with their Test caps by Ashwin and Virat Kohli, respectively. While this is Harshit's international debut, Nitish -- one of the stars for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2024 -- made his T20I debut early this year and was impressive.</p>

Perth Test: India opt to bat first as Nitish Reddy and Harshit Rana debut, Washington Sundar lone spinner

<p>Team India will be without their star batters, regular captain Rohit Sharma and new number three Shubman Gill, for the Perth Test against Australia starting November 22. While Rohit confirmed his unavailability for the first BGT Test due to personal reasons, Gill will be out with a broken thumb. The visitors, however, have identified their replacements for the series opener, with reports of Harshit Rana making his Test debut at the Optus Stadium also doing rounds.</p>

<p>India was jolted with a double blow on Sunday (Nov 17), when Rohit and Gill were declared unavailable for selection for the first Test. Though the management will play KL Rahul at the top alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, sources close to the information informed Times of India (TOI) of Devdutt Padikkal playing at number.</p>

<h2>Rana set for Test debut</h2>

<p>In Rohit’s absence, ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah will lead India in the first Test in Perth. Considering the conditions on offer, with steep bounce and carry being prime parameters, Harshit Rana, who impressed everyone, including head coach Gautam Gambhir, with his performance in the simulation game, might get his maiden Test cap.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India’s pace attack for the first game could consist of Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep Singh and Harshit Rana, with one of the three spin-bowling all-rounders (Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar) retaining the number seven spot. Though fellow all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy might get a game sometime in this marquee Test series, four-seamers could highlight India’s bowling attack for the opener.</p>
