Rana is currently with the Delhi Ranji Trophy (domestic first-class tournament) team where he took a five-wicket haul and scored a fifty in the third match of the season as well.

Rana has been on the rise ever since his performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 for Kolkata Knight Riders where he played under the mentorship of now India head coach Gautam Gambhir.

The BCCI has also selected Rana as one of the five pace bowlers for the upcoming five-Test tour of Australia which starts next month in Perth.

Rana's coach and former India selector Sarandeep Singh also thinks that the pacer is ready for the Test cricket grind.

"He is ready to play Test cricket. He is a positive guy, he knows what he is doing. He is ready for the highest level," Sarandeep, a former BCCI selector, told PTI.

"He bowled his heart out for Delhi, he is always looking for wickets and is handy all rounder. He is like a horse, can bowl long spells. I hope he does really well in Australia," he added.

With Rana linking up with the team, Jasprit Bumrah is expected to sit out the game in Mumbai given the upcoming Australia tour and India already 0-2 down in the three-match series.

"The kind of competitive attitude I like to play cricket with on the field is very similar to Australia's. It was my father's dream that I play a Test against England sometime at Lord's, but I personally like Australia more. I am proud of myself, that my name came up for this tour," said Rana.

The pacer also said that being with the team since Indian Premier League (IPL) has helped him learned a lot of things and grow a lot as well.

"I have been with the Indian team continuously since the IPL and I have learnt a lot of things there. This lesson is not only about cricket, but also about life, how a sportsperson advances in his career and life. Even as a cricketer, I have grown a lot by being with the Indian team."

"Only when the team was announced did I know I was going to Australia. But I had indications that I might be selected for the Australia tour because they had me with the team to prepare. Being selected for Australia tour is a big deal for me," he added.

India's tour of Australia begins on 22 November in Perth before the day-night second Test in Adelaide from December 6-10. The third Test will be played at the Gabba in Brisbane from 14-18 December before the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from December 26-30. 'Proud of myself,' says pacer Harshit Rana after being named in India's squad for Australia Tests

Harshit Rana’s inclusion in the India team for the Australia series raised eyebrows, while Mohammed Shami’s absence worried the fans. Late on Friday night (Oct 25), the BCCI announced a jumbo 18-man squad for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series starting November 22 in Perth. The selectors made shocking calls with the inclusions of white-ball prospects Rana and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Per a PTI report, a source close to the BCCI confirmed that Harshit Rana’s inclusion was head coach Gautam Gambhir’s call, who mentored the pacer at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL.

“Harshit Rana has been completely Gautam Gambhir's choice. He has been pushing his case for the longest time since the start of the Sri Lanka tour. He was also kept as a reserve bowler. Since he is younger and quicker than both Navdeep Saini and Mukesh Kumar, he has pipped them to the final squad,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Meanwhile, speaking on Nitish Reddy’s maiden Test call-up, the source said, “Nitish is a work in progress, but if India are to bring in balance, they need their fourth seamer to be an all-rounder. Hence, Nitish is a desperate choice going by his IPL and Bangladesh series performance.”

India also picked Abhimanyu Easwaran as the backup opener and named Washington Sundar as the spare spin-bowling all-rounder, ahead of Shardul Thakur, who starred the last time Down Under.

Ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah will lead the heavy pace, which includes Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Rana and returning Prasidh Krishna. Despite talks of India including Mayank Yadav for the Australia Tests, the BCCI decided against rushing him into the Test side.

Besides, the fans were left wondering about Mohammed Shami, who failed to make the cut despite confirming that he is 100% pain-free and raring to go for the marquee series. The ace India seamer also posted a video of him bowling at full throttle in the nets.

Per a report in the Indian Express, Shami will play two Ranji Trophy games for Bengal starting November 6 – one against Karnataka and the other against Madhya Pradesh.

Although the BCCI named three reserve pacers Mukesh Kumar, Navdeep Saini, and Khaleel Ahmed, Shami’s inclusion in the Test side will come down to his fitness, an injury to anyone on that team and the leadership group’s decision.

Sundar over Ashwin in Australia

In another turn of event, the PTI report says that Sundar, who picked seven wickets against New Zealand in the first innings in Pune, leads veteran off-spinner and one of India’s heroes the last time, Ravichandran Ashwin, in the pecking order should India decide to play two spinners, with Ravindra Jadeja being the automatic selection.

Samson and Co are yet to return to India after winning the T20 World Cup in the early hours of Sunday morning. Hurricane Beryl has hit Barbados after the world cup and the Indian team is stuck there and their return to India is delayed. This means Samson, Dube and Jaiswal are unlikely to be available for selection for Saturday’s opening T20I in Harare.

According to the latest reports, the trio will only return to India on Wednesday evening along with the rest of the squad through a charter flight. It is anticipated that all the players will participate in a road show and will have a dinner with the Prime Minister on Wednesday or Thursday evening. In this case, Samson and Co are unlikely to reach Zimbabwe on time and will face travel fatigue.
