<p>While the absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin from the G20 Summit was expected, it is the decision of Chinese President Xi Jinping to have no show – instead sending Premier Li Qiang as the head of the Chinese delegation – that may have come as a surprise.</p>

<p>This is more so, given the recent spurt of bonhomie with the bilateral meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in South Africa, after the near freeze on leadership-level interactions post the developments in Eastern Ladakh in the summer of 2020.</p>

<h2><strong>Xi's absence at G20: What it means?</strong></h2>

<p>While speculations have ranged from Xi’s health to unsubstantiated claims of reprimand by the elders of Communist Party of China (CPC), and difficult phase in the Chinese economy, his conscious and well-thought decision to keep away is a downgrade, in spite of all the spin imparted by officials in the Indian government.</p>

<p>In fact, just to make sure that his absence in Delhi is not seen to be on purpose, Xi also decided to miss the 43rd ASEAN Summit and 18th East Asia Summit in Jakarta, with Li Qiang again heading the Chinese delegation.</p>

<p>While it is a fact that the Chinese economy post the pandemic and zero-Covid measures is experiencing a crisis, the Communist Party-state under Xi has not necessarily let domestic challenges to overwhelm and constrain their external engagements. Consider China’s vaccine diplomacy during the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>

<p>Essentially, it is a sign of how the CPC (presently) views India – another ambitious rising power – and its status as a global player, which is clearly not on equal terms.</p>

<h2><strong>The&nbsp;<em>suzhi&nbsp;</em>discourse</strong></h2>

<p>A recent appropriate illustration for this is in Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson’s response in April this year, on India eventually overtaking China on population, by emphasising quality <em>(suzhi)</em> over quantity.</p>

<p>Immersed in meritocracy and superiority of some sections of individuals over others, the discourse of <em>Suzhi</em> has often been used by urban Chinese to denigrate their rural counterparts, thereby rendering the latter as second-class citizens.</p>

<p>Its usage in official discourse by the foreign ministry lends legitimacy in characterising, and racially profiling other countries.</p>

<p>The unwillingness of the Chinese Party-state to accord an equal status to India stems from their calculation of the world in zero-sum terms, wherein its rivalry/competition with the USA is the only contradiction that requires attention.</p>

<p>Its objection to the inclusion of the Sanskrit term, ‘<em>Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam</em>’ in the G20 documents, especially the joint communique at the end, citing precedence in not employing phrases from the language(s) or culture of nations holding the forum’s presidency previously, is the need to avoid any Indian philosophical imprints that embellishes their status, and also puts India on the same civilisational pedestal which China alone seeks to occupy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Chinese Party-state finds it discomforting to be in multilateral forums and groupings where it cannot hold the narrative, have some grip on the proceedings and decisively shape the contours of the debate.</p>

<p>Just like India’s non-participation in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) despite multiple invitations by China, wherein the latter holds all the levers of control.</p>

<p>Given that Modi would hold centre-stage at the summit and there would also be inevitable attention drawn on the continuing standoff at the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh with Xi’s presence, he would not be amenable to such a state of play.</p>

<p>Hence, a combination of factors and lack of incentives available that may explain why Xi has chosen to downgrade China’s participation at the G20 Summit.</p>

<p>This is also an opportune occasion to look at China’s role in multilateral fora, and the kind of fora increasingly chosen by it for its engagements. Whether it be specific arrangements like Forum on China-Africa Cooperation or the China-Community of Latin American and Caribbean States over the years, or forums like BRICS or Shanghai Cooperation Organization, China has sought to project itself as the leader of Global South posing an alternative to the US-led West.</p>

<p>Not that India itself is not immune to such arrangements altogether but the scale at which the Chinese Party-state operates is with the desire to shape things in its own image.</p>

<h2><strong>China's bid to consolidate Belt and Roads Initiative</strong></h2>

<p>This is also visible in how China keeps reiterating the Community of Shared Futures, which is a formulation by Xi Jinping.</p>

<p>The recent expansion of the BRICS membership also has China’s sharp imprint upon it. Further, China’s three new initiatives namely, the Global Civilizational Initiative, Global Development Initiative, and Global Security Initiative, seek&nbsp;to diversify or consolidate – depending on how one views it – the decade-long BRI, showcasing its global outreach and engagement. In such an arrangement, China’s endeavour is to undermine the G20 in its own way, and in the process, also puncture any possible comparisons with India.&nbsp;</p>

China’s message through its downgraded role at G20 Summit in Delhi

<p><meta name="uuid" content="uuidsGUKVmOAHCnq" /><meta charset="utf-8" />Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Saturday (September 9) explained to several world leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, the release of treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea, during the G20 Summit in India's capital city New Delhi.</p>

<p>Speaking to reporters, Hikariko Ono, press secretary at Japan's foreign ministry, said, "Prime Minister Kishida explained that the data monitored since last month's (water) discharge has been made public in a prompt and highly transparent manner. And that no problem has arisen from a scientific standpoint."</p>

<h2><strong>Some countries have taken uncommon actions over discharge: Japan</strong></h2>

<p>Last month, Japan started releasing treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, and drew some harsh criticism from China which immediately banned all seafood imports from Japan.</p>

<p>The Kishida government has said repeatedly that the water release is safe. During Saturday's press conference, Ono, without naming any countries, said, "Unfortunately, some countries have been taking uncommon actions such as suspending all imports of Japanese marine food products in response to the recent (water) discharge into the sea."</p>

<p>Referring to Kishida's remarks at the G20 summit, the foreign ministry press secretary said that Tokyo would continue to work closely with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and provide explanations to the international community based on scientific evidence in good faith and a highly transparent manner.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>China's stance on Fukushima release 'false': US</strong></h2>

<p>On Thursday, US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy called China's position on the Fukushima water release false and unfair. "I just view it as another way of the Communist Party of China putting falsities out there, trying to divide," McCarthy told reporters in Tokyo, adding he had no concern whatsoever about eating produce from Fukushima.</p>

<p>Earlier, Japanese PM Kishida said he explained Tokyo's position on the matter to Chinese Premier Li Qiang during a brief talk on the sidelines of a regional meeting in Indonesia on Thursday. However, Kishida declined to say how Li had responded.</p>

<p>The African Union is a continental body consisting of 55 member states.</p>

<p>Up until G20 Bali summit in 2022, the African Union had been a guest invitee to one of the world’s most powerful geo-economic bodies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amid calls for equitable representation for the countries of Global South, the African Union, however, continues to be a guest invitee in other major global organisations, including the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.</p>

<p>"It gives a fresh win to the idea of reformed and inclusive multilateralism. Just as India has actively supported the idea of bringing AU into G20, the world will some day soon recognise that India and Africa's representative states should also be included in the UN Security Council," said Rajiv Bhatia, a former Indian ambassador and Distinguished Fellow at Mumbai-based Gateway House.</p>

<p>The expansion of G20 shows a larger 'desirability for inclusive multilateralism' in global governance bodies, he pointed out.</p>

<p>India has been campaigning to amend the UN Charter to create additional permanent seats at the UN Security Council.</p>

<p>Since 2005, India is part of G-4, a political cooperative alliance comprising Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan, who support each other's bids for permanent seats on the UNSC while calling for equitable representation and multilateral and global governance bodies.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>African Union in G20: The China factor</strong></h2>

<p>Chinese President Xi Jinping's absence was widely deemed as a snub to India's G20 stewardship and a sign of geopolitical fissures preventing a joint declaration to prevail.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But New Delhi's diplomats proved skeptics wrong by preceding the adoption of New Delhi leaders' declaration with African Union's inclusion in the G20.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Experts say that China did not want to be a spoilsport just for the sake of it, and that while credit goes to India for pulling through African Union's successful inclusion, the unanimity of the decision implies that China also assented to the bloc's admission into G20.</p>

<p>"With other countries accepting most of the logic of what India was proposing, China would have been termed as a spoiler," Harsh Pant, the Vice President of Studies and Foreign Policy at New Delhi-headquartered Observer Research Foundation (ORF) told <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/g20-china-agrees-to-delhi-declaration-what-does-it-mean-634379">WION's Heena Sharma on September 10</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I don't think China wanted to be out of the tent simply for the sake of it," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Rajiv Bhatia, who also&nbsp;served as Director General of the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) from 2012–2015, if it wasn't for India, the initiative to include African Union in G20 would have fallen flat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The credit would nevertheless go to India because India started the entire process and carried it forward till the end. And therefore, you know, Africans fruitfully appreciate that without India's and Prime Minister Modi's steadfast support, the initiative would have fallen flat as it did last year during Indonesia's presidency." he said.</p>

<p>"So now there is a big chance for the next two presidencies; Brazil and South Africa to build on this development and ensure that Africa's key concerns are built into G20 agenda," Bhatia added.</p>

<p>Prior to the G20 summit, both the leaders held a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Hiroshima in the month of May this year where they held a discussion on the India-UK free trade agreement, innovation, and science along with ways to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.</p>

<p>India and the United Kingdom are negotiating a Free Trade Agreement, talks for which had begun in the year 2022. The 12th round of negotiations for the UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) took place from August 8 to 31 this year.</p>

G20 Summit: PM Modi holds bilateral talks with UK PM Rishi Sunak

<p>United States President Joe Biden arrived in New Delhi on Friday evening (September 8) to attend the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/g20-summit-2023-delhi-live-updates-world-leaders-start-gathering-in-national-capital-633520">G20 summit</a> on Saturday and Sunday in the Indian capital. He headed to a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shortly after arriving.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Biden and PM Modi reaffirmed the importance of the Quad in supporting a free, open, inclusive, and resilient Indo-Pacific. The US president also lauded India's G20 Presidency for further demonstrating how the G20 as a forum is delivering important outcomes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India and the US also agreed with India to resolve their last outstanding dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO).&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a post shared on X, previously known as Twitter, PM Modi said that the meeting was "very productive" and they were able to discuss numerous topics which will further economic and people-to-people linkages between India and the USA. He further said, "The friendship between our nations will continue to play a great role in furthering global good."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The leaders re-emphasized that the shared values of freedom, democracy, human rights, inclusion, pluralism, and equal opportunities for all citizens are critical to the success our countries enjoy and that these values strengthen our relationship," the statement read.&nbsp;</p>

<p>US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan joined the meeting; from the Indian side, external affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and security adviser Ajit Doval were in attendance.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the G20 Summit in New Delhi, the European Union reprimanded Russia, on Saturday (September 9) for pulling out of the Black Sea grain deal, which provided a safe passage for Ukraine to export its grain and called its offer of a million tonnes of grain to African countries a “parody of generosity”. Separately, Russia said it was sticking to its conditions to return to the grain deal which it quit back in July.</p>

<p>During the talks in New Delhi, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that the United Nations-Turkey brokered deal, which allowed the delivery of Ukrainian grain to vulnerable countries was 30 times more in volume than what Russia has offered to Africa.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“And what cynicism...you did not accept this,” Michel said in comments directed to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who is representing Moscow at the summit.</p>

<p>“Not only have you decided to pull out of this agreement on the Black Sea, but at the same time you are attacking the port infrastructure,” said the European Council president.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, G20 leaders in the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration called for the “full, timely and effective implementation to ensure the immediate and unimpeded deliveries of grain, foodstuffs, and fertilisers/inputs from the Russian Federation and Ukraine.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Adding that it is “necessary to meet the demand in developing and least developed countries, particularly those in Africa.”&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Russia rejects UN bank proposal</strong></h2>

<p>Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, on Saturday, said that Russia is sticking to its demands to rejoin the grain deal and rejected the UN’s proposal that a Luxembourg-based subsidiary of Rosselkhozbank could immediately apply to SWIFT to “effectively enable access” for the bank within 30 days.</p>

<p>The statement comes months after Russia backed out of the Black Sea grain deal saying Western sanctions are hindering its grain and fertiliser exports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the exports are not directly sanctioned by the West, it is sanctions against port access, insurance, logistics and payments, including the removal of agricultural bank Rosselkhozbank from SWIFT, which Moscow says is affecting its export.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The agreements say that SWIFT should be open to Rosselkhozbank, and not to its subsidiary. That is, we are talking about the need to return to the basics, to the agreements that were in place originally and which we were promised would be fulfilled,” said Peskov.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>G20 Summit 2023: </strong>The 18th G20 Summit in New Delhi&nbsp;is proving to be a mega event, perhaps the largest in the history of G20. Attended by more than 30 heads of State/Government, it discussed issues that are not only relevant to the G20 countries but hold significance to the future of the entire planet, duly justifying the theme of this year’s G20 i.e. ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’. &nbsp;The ‘Delhi Declaration’ issued on the first day&nbsp;of the summit was an apt reflection of the priorities that India proposed, key among them being the focus on inclusion of the Global South in the G20, inclusive and human-centric development, climate preservation models through ‘just transition’ and a new model for financial inclusion for the developing world. The joint declaration was also a result of deft diplomacy from India, which had to navigate through several disagreements and conflicting views, prominent among them was the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the resultant stand-off between Russia and the West. &nbsp;</p>

It was also the largest-ever gathering of world leaders hosted in India. It also came at a time when the world is looking for answers to serious global issues like Covid-19 pandemic which has adversely affected global supply chains, the Russia-Ukraine war which has split the world vertically between the ‘West and the Rest’ as well as the continued threat posed by China’s aggressive designs in East and South East Asia. In all of this, if there is one country that emerged above the gloom, it is India, which not only provided Covid-19 vaccines to its people but also to more than 100 countries in the world. Its resoluteness and exercise of its strategic autonomy in the face of extreme pressure posed by the West on Russia-Ukraine war, was acknowledged world over and later reluctantly accepted by the West too. India’s proactive steps in tackling climate disasters and promotion towards renewable energy have been taken note of&nbsp;by the world. In the midst of all this, India quietly climbed the ladder to become the fifth-largest economy and has been projected to continue its northward trajectory as the fastest-growing economy in the coming years. All this gave India prominence and the required fillip to set a proactive and futuristic agenda&nbsp;for its G20 presidency which is aptly reflected in the Delhi Declaration. &nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The Many Firsts and Unique Outcomes&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Perhaps the most significant outcome of India’s G20 has been the inclusion of the African Union as a G20 member. Right through its presidency, India has been vocal about becoming the ‘Voice of the Global South’. India hosted the first ever ‘Voice of Global South Summit’ on 12-13 January 2023. The Summit was held in a virtual format, with the participation of 125 countries of the Global South. India has constantly held the position that the concerns and needs of the Global South are essential to seek equitable solutions to global problems and thus inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member was an exclusive initiative and success of India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India’s emphasis on LIFE (Lifestyle for Environment) and climate preservation and getting the G20 nations to agree on a ‘just transition’ to save the planet is yet another huge achievement of the Summit. It now involves a country-specific climate assessment and transition rather than the earlier ‘one size fits all’ approach. The joint declaration aptly stated that ‘Just energy transitions can improve jobs and livelihoods, and strengthen economic resilience. We affirm that no country should have to choose between fighting poverty and fighting for our planet’.</p>

<p>India has already demonstrated its commitment by surpassing its renewable energy target nine years ahead of the 2030 target set at the 2015 Paris Climate Summit, where India had pledged that 40% of its power capacity would be met by non-fossil fuels by 2030, a target that was met in December 2021 itself. In addition, India’s global initiatives like the International Solar Alliance set up in 2015 and which now has over 100 countries as members, and the now proposed Global Bio Fuels Alliance are huge steps towards preserving the climate. Over the year of its presidency, India also showcased its traditional ‘living in harmony with the nature’ as an effective measure to safeguard the climate. Another Indian initiative, setting up the Coalition for Disaster Resilience so that countries across the world, especially developing countries, learn from each other and build infrastructure that is resilient even during disasters, was widely acknowledged and applauded at the Summit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Promotion of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) has been another landmark achievement of India’s presidency. India through its DPI has been able to pull millions out of poverty by ensuring financial inclusion and ‘direct benefit transfer’ stopping leakages. The digital payment system has caught global attention with advanced economies like Japan, Singapore, France, Germany, UAE looking at ways to adopt it. Noting India’s expertise and rapid growth in DPI, the joint declaration welcomed India’s plan to build and maintain a Global Digital Public Infrastructure Repository (GDPIR), a virtual repository of DPI, voluntarily shared by G20 members and beyond. It also welcomed Indian Presidency’s proposal of the One Future Alliance (OFA), a voluntary initiative aimed at building capacity, and providing technical assistance and adequate funding support for implementing DPI in Low and Middle-Income economies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India also placed emphasis on addressing the global challenges posed by debt vulnerabilities, especially for nations in the Global South. G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors have acknowledged the problem and the need to establish strong mechanisms to help the affected nations. Towards this, the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable, a joint initiative of the IMF, World Bank and the G20 Presidency has been launched this year. India has already helped Sri Lanka in its debt restructuring while the G20 has now taken note of cases of Zambia, Ethiopia and Ghana for progressing their cases. &nbsp;</p>

<p>There were many more outcomes in the 37-page declaration, an outcome of over 10 months of labored and thought-provoking and futuristic discussions. By organising over 200 meetings across 60 cities, India has set yet another benchmark for the future of G20. India’s vision to make it ‘peoples presidency’ has not only helped showcase the diversity and vibrancy of all parts of India to the world but has also set the tone that G20 cannot be an elitist club, to be entertained in the capital city only. When seen in context with India’s push for inclusion of the African Union in the G20, it is a clear step towards democratization of the G20. &nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Shaping the New World Order&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>India’s G20 presidency came at a critical point when the existing global order was in crisis and the established norms were being challenged. Russia Russia-Ukraine war has split the world between the ‘West and the Rest’ while China’s aggressive designs and refusal to follow the ‘rules-based order’ are causing discord. The US is no longer the single ‘pole’ and its dollar dominance is being challenged. To add to the chaos is the global crisis caused in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic which has disrupted global supply chains, causing huge shortages in food and energy in the developing and under-developed nations. The relevance and potential of international financial institutions like the Bretton Woods Institutions i.e. the World Bank, and the IMF along with several multilateral development banks etc., to tackle modern-day issues is being questioned. PM Modi’s remarks that “a mid-20th century approach cannot serve the world in the 21st century. So, our international institutions need to recognise changing realities, expand their decision-making forums, relook at their priorities and ensure representation of voices that matter”, aptly puts the issues in correct perspective.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In all this muddle and uncertainty, the world is looking for a nation that enjoys goodwill across ideologies, is a trustworthy partner, is technologically and economically sound, has no aggressive designs or extra-territorial ambitions and respects the ‘rule-based order’. India ticks all these boxes and more, with its vibrant democracy and diversity being added pluses. So, when India talked of the need to include the Global South in important decision-making discourse, it was accepted. When India stood firm on exercising its strategic autonomy and serving its national interests during the Russia-Ukraine conflict, it was not only accepted but gave it the status of a global leader, ‘Vishwaguru’ status. India’s G20 presidency has thus set the foundation for a new and fast-evolving world order which would be more diverse and inclusive and a world order which will witness the emergence of multiple poles, unlike the fast-eroding existing world order.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The Finale&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Coming amidst huge uncertainties about the outcome of the G20 Summit, India practically pulled off a heist when PM Modi announced right in the morning session of the first day that a consensus has been reached on adopting the Delhi Declaration. It caught all the pundits by surprise, the majority of whom were doubtful of a consensus declaration and others who were hopeful of a declaration, albeit in a photo finish. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The main sticking point on the Ukraine war was deftly re-worded to state that G20 expresses deep concern about the immense human suffering and the adverse impact of wars and conflicts around the world. In line with the UN Charter, all states must refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state. The use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible. It added that G20 is not the platform to resolve geopolitical and security issues and ended the para by stating that there were different views and assessments of the situation. With Russia on board with it, China probably had no option but to relent not only on Ukraine but also on the theme of the G20 presidency, ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ which interestingly was the first para of the preamble of the declaration, perhaps a ‘tease or a dare’ to China!&nbsp;</p>

<p>As PM Modi himself stated, “India’s G20 Presidency has been the most ambitious in the history of G-20. With 112 outcomes and presidency documents, we have more than doubled the substantive work from previous presidencies." Modi emphasized on the need for inclusive human-centric development in which women get their due role and importance. India’s emphasis towards women-led development was applauded at the summit. India also proposed to launch the 'G20 Satellite Mission for Environment and Climate Observation' and also announced the launch of the Global Biofuel Alliance and urged G20 nations to join the initiative with a plea to take ethanol blending with petrol globally to 20 per cent, both perhaps cherries on the cake in the success of the Summit. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The G20 presidency of India has thus been spectacular and pathbreaking. The benchmarks it has set will be difficult to match in the future. It has once again re-affirmed India’s global leadership status.&nbsp;As Dr Jaishankar said at the press conference, “The G20 has contributed to making India world-ready and the world India-ready". India’s moment has truly arrived. PM Modi and his team have made it a habit of delivering against the greatest of odds and this G20 Summit was just the latest among, in a long list. Today, while the world heaves a sigh of relief at yet another day saved from the blushes, Bharat celebrates and the tricolor flies high.&nbsp;</p>

The 18th summit of 19 member countries and the European Union will be held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi’s Pragati Maidan, beginning on September 9.</p>

<p>Leaders across the world have gathered in the capital city of India to discuss various issues related to the global economy, such as financial stability in the post-Covid era, climate change and sustainable development.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, on the eve of the G20 Summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Joe Biden at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, in the capital along with Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina and Mauritius PM Pravind Jugnauth.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to skip the summit and sent his Premier Li Qiang instead. Also, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be present in the Indian capital to attend the summit.</p>

<p>Refusing to be drawn into the specifics of contentious issues such as the Russia-Ukraine war and climate-related topics, India's top G20 officials told a news conference on the eve of the two-day summit that the declaration was "almost ready" and they were hopeful of clinching a joint communiqué by consensus.</p>

<h2><strong>G20 Summit in Delhi: Full schedule of two-day mega international conclave</strong></h2>

<p><strong>Day 1 (September 9)</strong></p>

<p><strong>9:30 am to 10:30 am</strong>: Arrival of leaders and heads of delegations at the summit venue, Bharat Mandapam, followed by a welcome photograph with the Indian Prime Minister at the Tree of Life Foyer. Subsequently, leaders and heads of delegation assemble in the Leaders' Lounge, Level 2 at Bharat Mandapam.</p>

<p><strong>10:30 am to 1:30 pm</strong>: The first session, called 'One Earth,' will take place at the Summit Hall at Bharat Mandapam, followed by a working lunch.</p>

<p><strong>1:30 am to 3:30 pm: </strong>Various bilateral meetings will be held.</p>

<p><strong>3:30 pm to 4:45 pm: </strong>The second session, 'One Family,' will take place in the summit venue after which the leaders return to their hotels.</p>

<p><strong>7:00 pm to 8:00 pm</strong>: Arrival of leaders and heads of delegation for dinner, beginning with a welcome photograph on arrival.</p>

<p><strong>8:00 pm to 9:00 pm:</strong> During dinner, the leaders will engage in talks over their meal.</p>

<p><strong>9:00 pm to 9:45 pm: </strong>Leaders and heads of delegation will assemble in the Leaders' Lounge at Bharat Mandapam to bring the day to a close.</p>

<p>On Monday (Sep 4), Scholz shared his picture on X, which was earlier known as Twitter, in which he was seen sporting a black patch over his injured right eye, and red scrape marks can be seen visible around the edge.</p>

<p>“Thanks for the well wishes. It looks worse than it is!” he posted along with the picture on his official account, stating, “Excited to see the memes.”</p>

<p>Chancellor’s spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/germanys-olaf-scholz-sports-eyepatch-post-injury-says-excited-to-see-the-memes-632404">said</a> that Scholz, who has been running regularly for many years, was in good shape despite the injury.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to his spokesperson, the German chancellor has suffered minor injuries and will have to wear the eye patch for the next few days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“He’s doing well under the circumstances,” Hebestreit said in a regular press briefing. “He was in a good mood this morning, although he still looks a little battered,” he added.</p>

<p>The accident which led to injuries happened sometime over the weekend, which also reportedly led to the cancellation of some of his appointments.</p>

<p>As per local media, Scholz fell while he was running in his hometown of Potsdam, which is 28 kilometres (17 miles) southwest of Berlin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scholz has been leading Germany since December 2021, prior to which he served as the finance and labour minister of the country and was also the mayor of Hamburg.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It also agreed that the world needs a total of $4 trillion low-cost financing annually for energy transition.</p>

<p>The retreating monsoon showers brought pleasant chills across the Indian national capital on Saturday morning as businesses, offices and schools were closed as part of security measures to ensure the smooth running of the summit.</p>

<p>New Delhi has been decked up for the gathering with a brand new summit venue, fountains, flowerpots and illumination along major thoroughfares, alongside thousands of armed security personnel standing guard.</p>

With India putting its best foot forward for hosting world leaders from across the globe, the dinner to be served was far from being overlooked. The menu for the dinner contains a bevy of rare dishes besides being a rich assortment of the best delicacies from across the nation also famous for the variety in its region-wise cuisine. &nbsp;</p>

<h2><em><strong>‘Sharad Ritu’</strong></em></h2>

<p>“A medley of traditions, customs, and climate, 'Bharat' is diverse in many ways. ‘Taste’ connects us. We celebrate <em>Sharad Ritu</em>, the autumn season of abundance in this menu,” a copy of the menu seen by WION said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>World leaders will be served <em>‘Madhurima’</em> or ‘Pot of gold’ – no not a real one – it is actually a “cardamom scented Barnyard millet pudding fig-peach compote and Ambemohar rice crisps”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The menu also mentions ‘Paan flavoured chocolate leaves’.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong><em>‘Shree Anna’</em>: The idea behind the menu</strong></h2>

<p>The menu was preceded by the idea behind the food which will be served and was titled <em>‘Shree Anna’</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“<em>Shree Anna</em> (Millets) are nutri-cereals that are considered super foods containing a high density of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibre. Millets can grow in adverse and arid conditions, with comparatively fewer inputs as compared to other cereals. They are cultivated across diverse agro-ecological regions and are resistant to pests and diseases,” stated a copy of the menu seen by WION.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“They can play an important role in addressing issues such as climate change and food security. On India’s initiative, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 2023 as the International Year of Millets (IYOM),” it added.&nbsp;</p>

We celebrate Sharad Ritu, the autumn season of abundance in this menu,” a copy of the menu seen by WION said. It added, “It showcases the wealth of ingredients across 'Bharat', expressing our rich culinary heritage in a modern mosaic dedicated to the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’.” For starters, the world leaders will be served ‘Paatram,’ ‘A breath of fresh air,’ which has been described as a “Foxtail millet leaf crisps topped with a yoghurt sphere and spiced chutney”. <p>South African President Cyril Ramaphosa took to X and said, “We are delighted that the G20 has accepted the African Union as a member of the G20. Global reconstruction in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic presents a unique opportunity to accelerate the transition to low-carbon, climate resilient, sustainable societies.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “Developing economies are bearing the brunt of climate change, despite carrying the least responsibility for this crisis…South Africa calls for an enhanced and expanded Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.”&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Nigeria</strong></h2>

<p>“As a continent, we look forward to further advancing our aspirations on the global stage using the G20 platform,” said Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is at the summit, on X.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kenyan President William Ruto said that AU’s entry into the G20 will “give African interests and perspectives voice and visibility in this important body”. He added, “With Africa poised to grow in the coming years, a seat will allow it to shape the decisions of G20 to ensure the continent’s interests are advanced.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>EU President Ursula von der Leyen, along similar lines, stressed the need for technology and finance to address climate change and its effects in the region. <p>G20 countries account for 80 per cent of greenhouse gases as opposed to the less than four per cent emissions by Africa but “it is among the most affected by climate change,” said the EU president.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The EU and Africa are partnering to address the continent’s priorities,” said von der Leyen, on X. She listed “ensuring food security, securing the means to fight climate change, and attracting investments,” as the priorities and said, “The G20 has much to win from a strong African voice.”</p>
