France`s sports minister said on Monday that Liverpool fans without valid tickets were responsible for the initial crowd problems at the Champions League final, with the problem then exacerbated by local youths trying to force their way into the game. The crowd trouble at the match in Paris has become a political issue ahead of French parliamentary elections in mid-June, and the sports ministry was due to meet with police and soccer officials later on Monday.

Some far-right politicians such as Eric Zemmour said the crowd trouble at Saturday`s Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid was caused principally by local youths from the nearby Seine Saint-Denis suburb. "What we really have to bear in mind is that what happened first of all was this mass gathering of British supporters of the Liverpool club, without tickets, or with fake tickets," French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera said.

"When there are that many people by the entrance to the stadium, there will be people trying to force their way in through the doors of the Stade de France, and a certain number of youths from the nearby area who were present tried to get in by mixing in with the crowd," she told French radio RTL. The match had to be delayed by 35 minutes after police tried to hold back people attempting to force their way into the national stadium without tickets, while some ticket holders complained that they were not let in.

Television footage showed images of young men who did not appear to be wearing red Liverpool jerseys jumping the gates of the stadium and running away from security to get into the match. Others outside, including children, were tear-gassed by riot police, said a Reuters witness. Chris Philp, Britain`s minister for technology, said he was shocked by the images.

"I was horrified to see those pictures of fans including children, disabled fans, being pepper-sprayed by French police," he added. "And from the pictures I saw there was no obvious justification for that kind of behaviour." The chaotic scenes were branded a national embarrassment in France, which is due to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the 2024 Olympic Games.

Liverpool Chief Executive Billy Hogan said the club wanted a "transparent investigation" by governing body UEFA. Britain`s minister for sport, Nadine Dorries, also urged UEFA to investigate. Oudea-Castera said that there were no problems with Real Madrid supporters at Saturday`s match and that the Spanish side had managed to control their travelling fans better than Liverpool.

She added that France nevertheless had to examine stepping up security at high-risk soccer matches, with further trouble having broken out on Sunday after St Etienne were relegated from France`s Ligue 1.

Liverpool fans caused initial problems at Champions League final, claims French minister

Liverpool fans were left dejected and shaken after horrific scenes outside the Stade de France ahead of the Champions League final between the Reds and Real Madrid. Thousands of Liverpool supporters had travelled to Paris from England to watch their club go up against the La Liga giants in a bid to lift their seventh Champions League/European Cup title. However, many of them were left stranded outside the stadium in Paris after chaos broke out just minutes ahead of kick-off.

The start of the final was initially delayed by 15 minutes due to the chaos outside the stadium. However, the game had to be delayed once again due to a mismanaged entry process and hundreds of fans with fake tickets trying to enter the stadium. There were chaotic scenes outside the end allotted to the Liverpool fans.

The French riot police had to be called in to take control of the situation. As per reports, the police officers were seen using pepper spray and tear gas against the Liverpool fans. Many Liverpool fans were left fearing for their safety as they remained stuck outside with the final minutes away from kick-off.

Some genuine ticket holders were also denied the opportunity to enter the stadium as a result of the chaos. While there were reports of pepper spray being used even against children, a Liverpool fan was left shattered after his brother went missing during the chaos.

Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the final to clinch the Champions League 2021-22 trophy in Paris on Sunday (May 29). It was yet another clinical performance from the Los Blancos on the biggest stage of them all as they proved why they remain one of the best teams in Europe. Vinicius Junior scored in the 59th minute to put Real Madrid ahead in the final and seal the deal for the Los Blancos as they went on to lift their 14th Champions League/European Cup title.

While a number of Real Madrid players impressed on the pitch in the final, it was goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois who came up with a top-notch performance between the sticks. Courtois was sensational throughout the summit clash and made as many as nine saves during the game to keep Liverpool at bay.

The Real Madrid keeper made a stunning save in the first half to deny Sadio Mane, who almost put Liverpool ahead with a brilliant strike in the 21st minute. The Belgian keeper continued his fine show in the remainder of the game and showed why he is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world at present.

Courtois also sent out a message to his critics after Real Madrid's memorable triumph as he asked fans in England to put some respect on his name. Courtois had joined Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2018 and has seen been criticised by many for his average goalkeeping. However, the Belgian shut his critics in style with his performance in the Champions League final against Liverpool on Sunday.

“When Real Madrid plays finals, they win them. I’m on the right side of history. I saw a lot of tweets coming my way, saying I will be humbled. It was the other way round," Courtois told BT Sport after the final.

“I needed to win this final for my career, for all the hard work I put in, and to put some respect on my name," he added.

Courtois also heaped praise on his teammates for Real Madrid's brilliant season and hailed them for putting up a fine performance in the final on Sunday. Real Madrid have had a fantastic season winning the La Liga and the Champions League titles.

“I saw a lot of criticism after a great season that I was not good enough or whatever. I’m just really proud of the performance of the team. I think I played a great game today and that was the difference. We had one chance and we scored it," Courtois added.

Speaking last month, Rangnick said, "I will take over as national team manager of Austria at the end of the season but will continue my consultancy with Manchester United."

He will now take charge of Austria for their upcoming Nations League fixtures, as they face Croatia, Denmark and France in Group A1. "Once again, we are grateful to Ralf for all his hard work and wish him the best for the future," United said.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez insisted that Paris St Germain forward Kylian Mbappe was not on the club`s minds as they celebrated a record-extending 14th European Cup crown after victory against Liverpool in Paris on Saturday.

Mbappe was widely tipped for a move to the Spanish capital but signed a contract extension until 2025 at PSG last week in a dramatic U-turn, a decision that irked many Real players and fans.

"Real Madrid will always continue to work on having the best players, but today Mbappe is already forgotten," Perez told reporters after a Vinicius Jr tap-in gave them a 1-0 win.

"Nothing has happened, Real Madrid have had a perfect season and that is a forgotten issue, there is only a Real Madrid party."

Chelsea said on Saturday that a final agreement had been struck to sell the Premier League club to a consortium led by Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly and backed by Clearlake Capital.
The takeover is expected to be completed on Monday.

The consortium, which won the bid to acquire the London side earlier this month, received approval from the Premier League and the British government this week for the sale to go ahead.

"Chelsea Football Club can confirm that a final and definitive agreement was entered into last night to sell the Club to the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Capital consortium," the club said in a statement.

"It is expected that the transaction will be completed on Monday. The club will update further at that time."

Russian owner Roman Abramovich put the club up for sale in early March following Russia`s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a "special military operation".

The sale also needed the green light from the Portugal government after Abramovich became a citizen of the country last year and is under European Union sanctions.

Chelsea had been operating under a special license issued by the British government since Abramovich`s assets were frozen in March, and it was set to expire on May 31.

The club previously confirmed Abramovich would donate all proceeds from the sale, which would be placed in a frozen bank account, to charitable causes.

"I am proud that as a result of our joint successes, millions of people will now benefit from the new charitable foundation which is being established," Abramovich said in a statement published on Chelsea`s website.

Abramovich bought the club in 2003 and helped Chelsea become a dominant force in English football, leading them to five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League trophies during his reign.

"My goal has been to ensure that the next owner has a mindset that will enable success," Abramovich added. "I am pleased this search has now come to a successful conclusion.

"As I hand over Chelsea to its new custodians, I would like to wish them the best of success, both on and off the pitch.

"It has been an honour of a lifetime to be a part of this club. I would like to thank all the club`s past and current players, staff, and of course fans for these incredible years."

The completion of the sale will allow Chelsea to renew transfer activity as well as permit players to sign new contracts, which was prohibited as part of the sanctions imposed.

Liverpool and Real Madrid will be battling for the elusive Champions League crown when they lock horns against each other in the much-awaited final at the Stade de France in Paris on Sunday. The two rivals last met each other in the final of the Champions League in 2018 when Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 3-1 to bag their 13th title. Liverpool will be aiming to exact revenge for the loss in Paris on Sunday.

While Real Madrid will be playing their first Champions League final since defeating Liverpool in 2018, Jurgen Klopp's men will be featuring in their third final in five seasons. The Reds have been a dominant force in Europe under Klopp and will be chasing their 7th European Cup/UEFA Champions League crown.

Liverpool defeated the likes of Inter Milan, Benfica and Villarreal en route to the final while Real Madrid had to deal with much tougher opponents in Chelsea, PSG and Manchester City to make it to the summit clash this season. The Los Blancos had produced a memorable comeback in their second leg of the semi-final against Manchester City to reach the final.

However, they are up for the biggest test of their season so far against Liverpool on Sunday. Real Madrid will be without the services of defender David Alaba, who recently returned to training after an adductor issue. Marcelo, on the other hand, has been deemed fit and is expected to start.

Teams from Belarus and Ukraine will be prevented from being drawn against each other in any UEFA competition going forward, the Executive Committee of European soccer`s governing body said on Friday.
The move comes following Russia`s invasion of Ukraine for which Belarus has been a key staging area. Teams from Russia and Ukraine were already prevented from being drawn against each other well before the conflict began earlier this year.

In March, UEFA had said Belarusian clubs and the national team will have to play all their home matches in UEFA competitions at neutral venues with no spectators allowed. "Today`s further decision is made to ensure the smooth running of UEFA competitions as the safety and security of the teams, officials and other participants may not be fully guaranteed due to the existence of a military conflict," UEFA said.
"The UEFA Executive Committee will remain on standby to convene further meetings to reassess the legal and factual situation as it evolves and adopt further decisions as necessary."

UEFA also approved special rules for the July 6-31 women`s European Championship in England that allows teams to name unlimited replacements in case of serious injury or illness but only before the first match. The rule change allows teams to replace players who test positive for COVID-19 but once a player is replaced, they cannot be re-admitted to the list.

Lee Grant, Manchester United's veteran goalkeeper, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39 as the Red Devils' summer exodus has kicked off. Grant, who'd previously played over 500 games for Derby, Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley, Stoke, and others, signed for United as goalkeeping cover in 2018.

He said, "After 511 appearances, I've decided it's the right time to move into the next stage of my career. 'There have been so many fun moments mixed in with the odd challenge, but I'm grateful for each and every one. Fulfilling a boyhood dream of playing for Manchester United was something I thought was out of reach, so to have achieved that fills me with great pride and emotion! Although I haven't played as many games in the last four years, I've given everything to the group every single day on the training pitch and in the dressing room."

Portugal has given its blessing to the sale of Chelsea by Russian-born billionaire Roman Abramovich, who became a Portuguese citizen last year and is under European Union sanctions, the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday. He put the London club up for sale in early March following Russia`s invasion of Ukraine. Abramovich has been sanctioned by the British government and the European Union over his links to Vladimir Putin. He has denied having close ties to the Russian President.

The British government on Wednesday authorised the sale to a consortium led by Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly and backed by Clearlake Capital, which had agreed terms to buy Chelsea for 4.25 billion pounds ($5.35 billion). The Portuguese government issued a humanitarian waiver requested by Abramovich allowing the sale, the foreign ministry said, adding that the decision had been agreed with the European Commission.

"The Portuguese authorisation stems from the guarantee given by the British authorities that the proceeds from the sale will be used for humanitarian purposes, not benefiting directly or indirectly the owner of the club, who is on the sanctions list of the European Union," it said. The club, which had been operating under a government licence since Abramovich`s assets were frozen in March, had earlier confirmed that the proceeds will be donated to charitable causes by Abramovich.

Earlier this month, Portugal blocked the sale of a 10 million euro ($10.4 million) luxury house over a "strong conviction" it belonged to Abramovich. The billionaire was granted Portuguese citizenship in April 2021 based on a law offering naturalisation to descendants of Sephardic Jews who were expelled from the Iberian peninsula during the Mediaeval Inquisition.

There is little known history of Sephardic Jews in Russia and the case sent shockwaves across Portugal, leading public prosecutors to launch an investigation and to the detention of a rabbi responsible for the certification that allowed Abramovich to obtain citizenship.

A headline-grabbing libel case over an online spat between two England footballers' wives wrapped up on Thursday, after lifting the lid on tabloid double-dealing and the lives of the rich and famous. Rebekah Vardy, whose husband Jamie plays for Leicester City, is suing Coleen Rooney, the wife of former Manchester United star Wayne, after she accused her of leaking stories to The Sun newspaper.

Coleen, the childhood sweetheart of England's leading goalscorer, was dubbed "Wagatha Christie" after she set up an elaborate sting to try to determine who was behind the leaks, then announced her findings publicly.

"It's... Rebekah Vardy's account," she said. Fascination with the lives of the wives and girlfriends (WAGs) of top-flight footballers -- and their very public falling-out -- has produced wall-to-wall coverage since the case began last Tuesday.

Bystanders have even been waiting outside the hallowed Royal Courts of Justice in central London to snap the women as they attended proceedings.

Wagatha Christie trial: England footballers' wives libel spat ends with judgment reserved

Nicolo Zaniolo`s goal earned AS Roma a first major European title in more than 60 years after a 1-0 win over Feyenoord in the Europa Conference League final in Albania on Wednesday, completing a unique European trophy haul for Jose Mourinho. Roma coach Mourinho, who had previously won the Champions League, Europa League and the UEFA Cup, can now add the third-tier European title -- the Italian club`s first trophy in 14 years -- to his medal tally.

The 22-year-old Zaniolo earned Roma victory with an expertly-taken finish in the 32nd minute, as he became the first Italian to score in a European final since Filippo Inzaghi against Liverpool in the 2007 Champions League. Roma, whose only previous continental title was the old Fairs Cup in 1961, held off a spirited comeback from their Dutch opponents, who were twice denied by the woodwork in the second half, and ensured that Mourinho became the first manager to win a European trophy with four different clubs.
"We are a real team, we proved that. Now we have to celebrate and then start again, which is always difficult after a great victory, but a real team wins, celebrates and starts again,” Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini told Sky Sport Italia.

"I said yesterday that I never would’ve imagined at the age of 25 to achieve this with the Roma jersey and the captain’s armband. It is a wonderful moment." Given both Roma and Feyenoord came into the contest having already secured Europa League football for next season through their domestic league position, it was all about the glory in Tirana.

Early on it looked like there was only going to be one winner, as Roma dominated the opening exchanges, without troubling Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow, playing his first match since March 10.
One chance was all they needed to hold the lead at the interval, with Zaniolo brilliantly bringing the ball down on his chest before slotting home his first goal in all competitions since a hat-trick in the quarter-finals against Bodo/Glimt.

Zaniolo also became the youngest Italian to score in a major European final since Alessandro Del Piero against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League in May 1997.
Feyenoord, looking to be the first Dutch club to win a European competition in 20 years, since their 2002 UEFA Cup triumph, failed to really test Rui Patricio in the Roma goal in the opening period.
Yet they started the second half brightly, with Roma`s Gianluca Mancini diverting an early Feyenoord corner onto his own post.

The Dutch side kept coming and hit the woodwork again as Tyrell Malacia’s superb strike from 25 metres was tipped onto the post by Patricio. Further chances came and went, but some last-ditch blocks and wasteful finishing ensured Roma`s long wait for a European trophy would end in Mourinho`s first season in the Italian capital.

Diego Maradona's sudden demise in late 2020 shocked the whole sporting fraternity. The legendary footballer died of a heart attack in November 2020 and the forthcoming FIFA World Cup, to be held later this year in Qatar, will be the first-ever edition of the showpiece event without the presence of Maradona.

Nonetheless, a plane -- designed as a flying museum -- dedicated to the great footballer Maradona was unveiled in Argentina and is set to fly for the Qatar World Cup, which will kick off on November 21.

The Maradona-inspired aircraft

The 12-seater plane -- called Tango D10S -- has been financed by an Argentine fintech company in memory of Maradona, who led the national team to the 1986 World Cup title. The aircraft features a picture of Maradona kissing the elusive World Cup trophy on the fuselage whereas the plane's tail comprises his face.

Talking about the wings, it has both of his goals in Argentina's famous 2-1 win over England in the World Cup quarter-final. The 'Hand of God' goal is on the left-wing whereas one of his goals that has been hailed as the greatest of all time on the opposite wing.

“I am mad about Maradona, one of those people who still watch videos of Diego before I go to sleep at night,” Gaston Kolker, CEO of fintech company Give and Get, told Reuters. "This is the first World Cup without Maradona and maybe the last with (Lionel) Messi. I said, I want to make Diego’s plane, I want to make Diego’s plane. And so we launched Tango D10S. When Maradona’s team mates saw it, the World Cup winners from 1986, they were amazed, they were hypnotised by the aircraft," he added.

Liverpool`s Juergen Klopp was recognised for his side`s tilt at an unprecedented quadruple this season as he was named the League Managers Association (LMA) and Premier League Manager of the Year on Tuesday.
Liverpool won the League Cup and FA Cup and will play Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday. They came up just short in the Premier League title race, finishing a point behind champions Manchester City.

"It`s a great honour and it was an insane season," said Klopp. "The last matchday when only two games were meaningless and in the rest, we all played for absolutely everything. It was not the best outcome for us, but we are already over it." The 54-year-old German won the Premier League award after votes from the public were combined with those of an expert panel, while the LMA prize was voted for by the full membership of managers across all the divisions.

The Boehly-Clearlake consortium, which agreed terms to acquire Chelsea for 4.25 billion pounds ($5.33 billion) earlier this month, passed the Premier League Owners` and Directors` Test, the league said on Tuesday, paving the way for the club`s takeover.

The proposal also needs approval from the British government before the consortium can complete the acquisition, with a week remaining before the club`s current operating licence expires on May 31. "The Board has applied the Premier League`s Owners` and Directors` Test (OADT) to all prospective Directors, and undertaken the necessary due diligence," the league said in a statement.

"The members of the consortium purchasing the club are affiliates of the Clearlake Capital Group, L.P., Todd Boehly, Hansjorg Wyss and Mark Walter." "Chelsea FC will now work with the relevant governments to secure the necessary licences to complete the takeover."

The British government is set to approve the sale after Chelsea`s Russian owner Roman Abramovich gave assurances he will not benefit from the deal, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters.
Currently subject to sanctions by the British government, Abramovich put the London club up for sale in early March following Russia`s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a "special military operation".
Abramovich dismissed reports that he wanted a loan given to the club, reportedly worth 1.5 billion pounds ($1.88 billion), to be repaid.

Chelsea previously confirmed all proceeds from the sale, which would be placed in a frozen UK bank account, will be donated to charitable causes by Abramovich. Groups led by Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca and former British Airways chairman Martin Broughton were earlier eliminated from the bidding process while a consortium led by Chicago Cubs owners the Ricketts family pulled out of the running.

Premier League gives green signal to proposed takeover of Chelsea by Todd Boehly-led consortium

The UK government on Wednesday (May 25) approved Chelsea football club's sale to Todd Boehly-led consortium in a deal worth 4.25 billion pounds (around 5.2 billion USD). The approval of the club's sale marks an end to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's 19-year-long ownership of the Blues. Abramovich had bought Chelsea in the year 2003 when the club had not won a single league title since the 1955/56 season. The Russian went on to transform Chelsea into one of the best football clubs in the world and inspired them to incredible success during his era.

Abramovich had put Chelsea up for sale just two weeks after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The invasion saw the UK government sanction Russian billionaires operating in the country, including Abramovich. The deal was approved on Wednesday after months of negotiations with the UK government ensuring that the proceeds from the sale will be frozen in a UK bank account.

The UK government also received legal guarantees that the sale will not benefit Abramovich, whose assets in the UK have already been frozen in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. While the ending of his reign at Chelsea is certainly not what Abramovich would have expected, he made the club a force to reckon with under his ownership.

Under Abramovich's ownership, Chelsea won as many as 21 major trophies, including an impressive five Premier League and 2 Champions League titles. Their latest Champions League triumph came under current manager Thomas Tuchel in the 2020-21 season.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric recently aimed a hilarious dig at Kylian Mbappe after the French striker snubbed the Spanish giants to extend his stay at his current club Paris Saint-Germain. Mbappe had agreed personal terms with Real Madrid and was on the verge of signing for the reigning La Liga champions before deciding to accept a lucrative contract offer from PSG to remain in his home country. Mbappe's decision to snub Real Madrid didn't go down well with many Los Blancos fans around the globe.

Mbappe, who had publicly expressed his desire to move to Real Madrid last year, was close to finalising his dream switch earlier this month. However, the talented French striker had a change in heart at the very last minute to extend his contract at PSG. Mbappe has now signed a fresh 3-year deal at PSG which is reportedly set to make him the highest-paid footballer in the world.

Modric, who is currently trying to sort out his own future at Real Madrid, mentioned Mbappe when asked about his contract situation at the club. Modric's current contract is all set to expire on June 30 post which the Croatian midfielder will become a free agent. However, the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner is optimistic about extending his contract at Real Madrid and said he won't do a u-turn like Mbappe.

"I haven't renewed yet, but I'm not going to do a Mbappe. I hope the club doesn't do it to me," Modric told COPE.

"We have a good relationship. I have said many times that I want to finish my career here," he added.

When asked if Real Madrid players were expecting Mbappe to join them at the club this year, Modric said they had no expectations and were not aware of the situation. The Croatian midfielder added that Mbappe's contract extension at PSG didn't come as a surprise to him.

“No, because we didn't know anything. We had no expectations. There was a lot of talk about this, for a year, but we didn't know anything; if it was going to happen or not, and that is why we have to close that topic and not talk about it anymore," said Modric.

The midfield maestro added that Real Madrid's current focus is only on the Champions League final against Liverpool and that the Mbappe saga has not affected the dressing room. Modric also expressed confidence over young players in the current Real Madrid squad growing up to be future superstars at the club.

"We have the Champions League final, which is the most important thing of all. Real Madrid will continue to be at the top, above any player, anything, and there is no need to go over it over and over," said Modric.

"I think we have a very good team, many players who can grow a lot, who have had a great season and maybe value what we have here. Players that, maybe some of them, will become great stars in the future," he added.

'I'm not going to do a Mbappe': Luka Modric's cheeky response on potential contract extension at Real Madrid

BBC News issued an on-air apology to Manchester United fans on Tuesday (May 24) after a message ran on their news ticker calling the club 'rubbish'. United, who are one of the most successful clubs in English football, endured a disappointing campaign in the recently-concluded 2021-22 season as they failed to finish inside the top four in the Premier League. The pictures of BBC's gaffe during a live show soon went viral on social media inviting angry reactions from some United fans.

The incident happened during a live broadcast on Tuesday when the message 'Manchester United are rubbish' flashed up for a few seconds in the ticker. The ticker is a strip at the bottom of the screen which has current headlines running on it. BBC was quick to realise their mistake and issued an apology to those offended.

BBC presenter Annita McVeigh, who was presenting during the gaffe, read out an apology and revealed the message popped due to the mistake of a trainee, who was trying to learn how to use the ticker. McVeigh further said that the message was not supposed to appear on the screen.

“Just while we are on the subject of football, a little earlier some of you may have noticed something pretty unusual on the ticker that runs along the bottom of the screen with news. Making a comment about Manchester United and I hope Manchester United fans weren’t offended by it," said McVeigh as she apologised for the gaffe.

“Let me just explain what was happening. Behind the scenes, someone was training to learn how to use the ticker and to put text on the ticker so they were just writing random things. That comment appeared, so apologies if you saw that and we offended and you’re a fan of Manchester United. But certainly, that was a mistake and it wasn’t meant to appear on the screen," she added.

United will now look for a fresh start as they gear up to begin a new era under new manager Erik Ten Hag, who has arrived from Dutch club Ajax with an aim to help United get back among the best clubs in the world and dominate again.

The British government has issued a licence that permits the sale of Chelsea to a consortium led by Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly and backed by Clearlake Capital, sports minister Nadine Dorries said on Wednesday. Current owner Roman Abramovich is subject to sanctions by the British government. He put the London club up for sale in early March following Russia`s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a "special military operation".

"We are satisfied the proceeds of the sale will not benefit Roman Abramovich or other sanctioned individuals," Dorries said on Twitter.

"Given the sanctions we placed on those linked to Putin and the bloody invasion of Ukraine, the long-term future of the club can only be secured under a new owner."

On Tuesday the consortium, which agreed terms to acquire Chelsea for 4.25 billion pounds ($5.33 billion) earlier this month, passed the Premier League Owners` and Directors` Test.

Chelsea had been operating under a government license since Abramovich`s assets were frozen in March and it was set to expire on May 31.

The club had earlier confirmed that all proceeds from the sale will be donated to charitable causes by Abramovich.

"We are now satisfied that the full proceeds of the sale will not benefit Roman Abramovich or any other sanctioned individual," said a government spokesperson.

"We will now begin the process of ensuring the proceeds of the sale are used for humanitarian causes in Ukraine, supporting victims of the war."

The completion of the sale will allow Chelsea to renew transfer activity as well as permit players to sign new contracts, which was prohibited as part of the sanctions imposed.

Only season ticket holders could earlier attend home matches, while the government also announced a ban on merchandise sales.

Groups led by Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca and former British Airways chairman Martin Broughton were eliminated from the bidding process, and a consortium led by Chicago Cubs owners the Ricketts family pulled out of the running.

Manchester United are all set to embark on a new era under new manager Erik Ten Hag after ending their dismal campaign in the 2021-22 season. In what was a forgetful season for the Red Devils, they failed to qualify for the knockout stage in the Champions League while also missing out on a spot in the top four in the Premier League.

United finished a dismal sixth on the points table and will play in the Europa League next season. Addressing his first press conference since his arrival at Manchester United on Monday (May 23), Ten Hag met the journalists at Old Trafford and had a formal introduction before responding to their queries.

While he gave out little about his plans going into his first season at the club, Ten Haag came up with a precise response when asked about the future of Cristiano Ronaldo. Amid speculations that Ronaldo is looking to leave United after their disappointing show last season and that the Portuguese star might not fit into Ten Hag's system, the Dutch manager hinted he intends to keep Ronaldo at the club next season.

"Of course," said Ten Hag when asked if Ronaldo will fit into his system at Manchester United. When asked what will the Portuguese forward bring to the table under him, Ten Hag was clear in his response and said - "goals".

Further asked if Ronaldo can take up a leadership role in his final year at United, Ten Hag said he would first like to talk to Ronaldo himself before commenting on that. "I talk first with Ronaldo before I talk with you," said the Dutch manager.

Ronaldo, who returend to United last summer from Juventus, went on to score an impressive 24 goals for the club across competitions despite being 37. Ronaldo remains one of the best goalscorers in the world despite his growing age and Ten Hag is confident of utilising his skills in his first season at the club.

Ten Haag was also asked about his plans next season and the Dutch manager resfused to get into details. He said his will analyse himself and set his plans accordingly for the next season.

"I analyse and I think we are in the process now with this start before the season starts, we have a couple of weeks of break, so I analyse, I observe and I will settle conclusions but I keep it for myself. It's the previous season and we have to go to next season," said the Dutch manager.

Kylian Mbappe explains why he decided to stay

Mbappe has been on Real Madrid's radar for quite some time now and the La Liga giants had even made a stunning bid of around 180 million Euros last summer to persuade PSG into selling the French striker as he was entering the last year of his previous contract. However, PSG rejected Real Madrid's bid to keep the French striker at the club.

One of the most sought-after forwards in the world, Mbappe has already proven himself on the big stage at a very young age and is touted to become one of the greats of the game. Explaining his side of the story, Mbappe thanked Real Madrid fans for their support and said he wants to take France and PSG forward as a Frenchman.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has issued a brutal response to La Liga president Javier Tebas after he claimed Kylian Mbappe's latest deal with PSG was an 'insult to football'. Mbappe snubbed Real Madrid to extend his stay with his current club PSG in one of the richest deals ever in football history.

As per reports, Mbappe will be earning a whopping 4.9 million USD per month as per his new three-year contract with PSG and is also set to take home a signing-on bonus of around 100 million USD. Tebas slammed PSG for not respecting the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules in order to ensure Mbappe extended his contract at PSG by snubbing Madrid.

"What PSG is doing by renewing Mbappe with large sums of money...after posting losses of 700 million euros in recent seasons and having a wage bill of over 600 million euros, is an INSULT to football," Tebas said in a tweet.

He also aimed a dig at PSG president Al-Khelaifi and called him more dangerous than Super League. A Super League was proposed last year which would have involved only 12 of the most powerful clubs in the world. The proposal received intense criticism and had to be dissolved soon owing to the backlash.

"PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi 'is as dangerous as the Super League'," Tebas added.

Al-Khelaifi has now responded to the La Liga president's comments about him and his club. The PSG president hit back at Tebas and said La Liga isn't at the same level as it was 4-5 years back. Al-Khelaifi said Tebas might be worried that Ligue 1 has become stronger than La Liga now.

"I think the president of our league can respond to that. Maybe it's a good thing if Ligue 1 is doing better than LaLiga," Al-Khelaifi said at Mbappe's first press conference with him after signing his new three-year deal at PSG.

"I think this is a positive thing for us and Ligue 1. LaLiga isn`t the same as three or four years ago. I think it`s fantastic for France, we're keeping the best player in the world in France.

“We have Mbappé, he stays with us and the rest, honestly I don’t care," he added.

Al-Khelaifi also responded to Mbappe's critics and reports claiming the talented French striker snubbed Real Madrid to extend his stay at PSG only for the lucrative salary being offered. The PSG president said not money but the sporting project as PSG was the key for Mbappe in his decision to extend his stay at the club.

“Money is not the most important thing for Kylian Mbappé. There’s another club in Spain that can pay way more than us. The sports project was the most important point for Mbappe," said Al-Khelaifi.

United finished sixth in the Premier League last season, ending their campaign under interim manager Ralf Rangnick with a 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

The disappointing season has been accompanied by widespread reports of divisions within the club and the team and a difficult relationship between some of the players and German Rangnick.

Dutchman Ten Hag says he expects a different approach under his charge.

"Everywhere I was in my career, I have high demands on my players. I expect them to fight and give 100 per cent," said Ten Hag, who bowed out as Ajax manager by bringing another title to the Amsterdam club.

"We have to do better and they have to co-operate. They have to be unified, to form a team, and to battle the opponent," he said.

Goals from Alfonso Pedraza and Moi Gomez earned Villarreal a 2-0 win at Barcelona on Sunday to secure a spot in the Europa Conference League after finishing seventh in LaLiga. After reaching the Champions League semi-finals this season, knocking out former champions Juventus and Bayern Munich on the way, Unai Emery`s side entered the final week of the season in danger of missing out on European competition completely.

With the top six already determined, Villarreal started the day in seventh, one point ahead of Athletic Bilbao who were playing at fourth-placed Sevilla at the same time on Sunday. They needed to win at Camp Nou to guarantee qualification against a second-placed Barca side who had nothing left to play for and put up little fight.

Pedraza scored the opener in the 40th minute with a precise shot after receiving a fine through ball from Dani Parejo and Moi Gomez sealed the win in the 54th, striking powerfully home from close range after Adama Traore made a mistake while trying to clear the ball from his own area. Athletic ended up losing 1-0 to Sevilla to finish in eighth place, four points behind Villarreal.

Kylian Mbappe snubbed Real Madrid to extend his stay at his current club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) after being offered one of the most lucrative deals in football history. Mbappe was close to leaving PSG to join Spanish giants Real Madrid and also had an agreement in place with the La Liga champions, however, the move fell through this week.

Mbappe is reportedly set to earn a whopping 4 million pounds (around 4.9 million USD) per month with his fresh three-year contract with PSG, as per a report in Sky Sports. He is all set to become the highest-paid footballer in the world at present and will also be reportedly paid a signing-on bonus of around 100 million pounds (around 120 million USD).

La Liga president Javier Tebas has termed the PSG-Mbappe deal as an 'insult to footabll'. Tebas slammed PSG for not respecting the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules and offering a lucrative contract to Mbappe despite the club having suffered losses worth around 700 million euros (approx 738 million USD) in the last few seasons.

"What PSG is doing by renewing Mbappe with large sums of money...after posting losses of 700 million euros in recent seasons and having a wage bill of over 600 million euros, is an INSULT to football," Tebas said in a tweet reacting to the Mbappe-PSG deal.

"PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi 'is as dangerous as the Super League'," he added referring to the proposal of a Super League involving 12 of the world's most powerful football clubs which was proposed last year.
