Premier League: Manchester City trounce Newcastle United to open up three-point lead

Leeds United suffered a huge setback in their battle for Premier League survival as a 2-1 loss at Arsenal on Sunday plunged them into the relegation zone and the hosts took another step towards securing a top-four finish.

An early quickfire double from former Leeds loanee Eddie Nketiah put Arsenal in firm control before the visitors were reduced to 10 midway through the first half when Luke Ayling was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Gabriel Martinelli.

Leeds did not have an attempt at goal until Diego Llorente`s header beat goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in the 66th minute but Arsenal weathered a nervy finish to close out their fourth successive victory and solidify their hold on fourth place.

Arsenal, on 66 points with three games remaining, opened up a four-point gap on north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in fifth ahead of Thursday`s derby and moved to within a point of third-placed Chelsea.

A second straight defeat for Leeds left them in 18th place with 34 points, behind Burnley on goal difference, after Everton`s 2-1 victory at Leicester City lifted the Merseyside club out of the bottom three.

"We are in the relegation zone but we have to fight for our lives," Leeds manager Jesse Marsch said.

"Our backs are against the wall... We have to regroup and figure out what we can do.

"When I came here two months ago, I knew this was not going to be easy. The group has stayed strong.

Our second-half performance highlights the character of the people we have here."

Nketiah fired Arsenal ahead after five minutes when visiting goalkeeper Illan Meslier dwelled on a routine back pass, allowing the forward to nip in and poke the ball home from inside the six-yard box.

Five minutes later, Martinelli wriggled past three Leeds defenders and played a neat cut-back to the unmarked Nketiah for the 22-year-old to tap in for his ninth goal of the season in all competitions.

Premier League: Leeds United slip into relegation zone after defeat at Arsenal

Manchester United's season continues to go from bad to worse with one defeat after another. The English Premier League (EPL) giants have endured a disappointing campaign this season as they are all but certain to miss out on a spot in the Champions League by finishing outside the top four in England's top flight. The Red Devils were hammered 4-0 by Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday.

It was yet another woeful performance from United, who have failed to find the rhythm and have struggled immensely under interim manager Ralf Rangnick. From dressing room leaks to players failing to perform up to the expectations, United have had a turbulent time this season as they find themselves reeling on the spot on the points table.

It was a dismal performance from United on Saturday as goals from Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Pascal Grob and Leandro Trossard saw Brighton earn a comprehensive 4-0 win against the Red Devils. After their 3-0 win over Brentford in their last game, United were expected to finish the season on a high but they faltered once again against Brighton.

Dejected with their team's poor show, United fans, who had travelled to Brighton to watch their team play, lost their patience and were heard chanting ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’ as they turned on the players after their dismal defeat. Reacting to the fans' chant, Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes said they were right for calling the players out.

The Portuguese midfielder, who has been one of the better players for United this season, said he also deserved the backlash from the fans along with his teammates as they were not good enough against Brighton.

"I include myself in that," Fernandes told Sky Sports. "What we did today, what I did today, was not enough to be in a Man Utd shirt and I accept it," he added.

When asked what went wrong for United in the game, Fernandes pointed out Rangnick's men were not good enough in terms of both quality and mentality. Fernandes described it as an 'embarrassing' performance from United, who have been battling all season to secure a spot in the top four and have failed to do so.

"A little bit of everything (went wrong). Quality. Mentality. They deserved to win and we deserve to be in the position we are in now. It’s something that we have to look and be embarrassed because that was not good enough from us and we have to do much better," said Fernandes.

A stoppage-time goal from defender Jordi Alba earned Barcelona a 2-1 LaLiga win at Real Betis on Saturday, securing Xavi Hernandez`s side Champions League qualification and edging them closer to a spot at the lucrative Spanish Super Cup finals.

What had been a joyous week for Liverpool went flat on Saturday as they stumbled in the title race, dropping two crucial points in a 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Watford were relegated from the top flight as they lost to Crystal Palace, while Manchester United`s season can hardly end soon enough after a 4-0 hammering by Brighton and Hove Albion.

Liverpool reached the Champions League final on Tuesday with victory over Villarreal but the mood was gloomy as they were unable to ratchet up the pressure on Manchester City at Anfield.

They had won their last 12 Premier League home games and were unbeaten at Anfield in the league for 14 months but trailed to Son Heung-min`s 56th-minute goal.

Son`s 20th league goal of the season looked like earning Tottenham the win they needed to move fourth but Luis Diaz equalised with a deflected shot in the 74th minute.

Premier League: Liverpool suffer title blow after draw against Spurs, Brighton thrash Manchester United 4-0

Watford were relegated from the Premier League on Saturday after a 1-0 defeat by Crystal Palace as Wilfried Zaha`s first-half penalty soured former manager Roy Hodgson`s return to Selhurst Park.

Palace were awarded a penalty following a VAR check for handball by Hassane Kamara and Zaha stepped up to slot home his 13th goal of the season after sending Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster the wrong way.

The visitors needed a win and a mathematical swing to keep alive their dwindling hopes of surviving the drop but their timid display meant Palace comfortably kept Watford at arm`s length.

Patrick Vieira`s side climbed up to ninth place on 44 points while Watford remained second-bottom with 22 points and will join Norwich in the Championship, dropping down to the second division for the second time in three seasons.

Palace controlled the contest from the start and had plenty of first-half chances, with Marc Guehi nodding wide while Michael Olise and Zaha also sent shots past the post before taking a deserved lead through the penalty.

Odsonne Edouard nearly scored a superb solo goal just after the hour mark, dancing past the Watford defence before hitting the post from a tight angle after his shot went through Foster`s legs.

Watford`s task of scoring at least two goals became even more difficult when they were reduced to 10 men after Kamara, booked for handball earlier, was shown another yellow card for a foul on Michael Olise with around 20 minutes remaining.

Foster kept Watford in the contest with a string of fine saves, ensuring Palace`s dominance did not reflect on the scoreline, but his team mates offered little in attack as they fell to their sixth straight league defeat.

Former Palace boss Hodgson, who left the Croydon club at the end of last season after four years in charge, arrived at Vicarage Road in January to try and save Watford from being relegated after they had slumped to 19th place.

Wins remained hard to come by under Hodgson, Watford`s third manager this season after Xisco Munoz and Claudio Ranieri, as they beat only Southampton and Aston Villa this year in his 15 games in charge.

Hodgson, 74, is set to retire from top-level management when his contract at the Hertfordshire club expires at the end of the season, ending his long and distinguished career on a bitter note after suffering his first Premier League relegation.

Watford were relegated from the Premier League on Saturday after a 1-0 defeat by Crystal Palace as Wilfried Zaha`s first-half penalty soured former manager Roy Hodgson`s return to Selhurst Park.

Eintracht Frankfurt beat 10-man West Ham United 1-0 in their Europa League semi-final second leg on Thursday to reach their first European final in 42 years with a 3-1 aggregate victory. The Germans, who last featured in a European final in 1980, will face Rangers on May 18 after the Scottish side knocked out RB Leipzig.

In front of a deafening 48,000 crowd, Rafael Borre drilled in the winner for the hosts in the 26th minute, beating the English club for a second time following a 2-1 triumph in the first leg last week. West Ham, who played most of the game with 10 men after left back Aaron Cresswell was dismissed for a professional foul on Jens Petter Hauge in the 17th minute, were toothless throughout.

Their manager David Moyes was also sent off in the 79th minute for angrily kicking a ball in a frustrating and scrappy end to West Ham`s European run this season. "A dream has finally come true," Eintracht president Peter Fischer said, surrounded by ecstatic fans who stormed the pitch on the final whistle.
"The team did it really well. This city and this environment deserved it. That`s football and now we will win this thing," Fischer said.

It had not started well for Frankfurt, though, with defender Martin Hinteregger taken off after only eight minutes with a hamstring injury. But the dismissal of Creswell opened up space down the wing for the Germans and Ansgar Knauff made the most of it when he charged through and delivered a perfect ball for Borre to score.

West Ham hardly got a look in and their best chance came a minute from halftime when Kurt Zouma`s close-range effort was cleared off the line. They were equally ineffectual after the break with Moyes`s frustration boiling over when he kicked the ball at a ball boy who he thought was trying to waste time.
"Really disappointed," Moyes said. "Things didn`t go for us tonight. I am really proud of the players – how they played with 10 men was fantastic. Other teams would have folded and lost 2-0 or 3-0.

"I felt this was a chance. I think we’ve played better teams than Frankfurt. If we’re honest, we probably lost the tie in the first few seconds at the London Stadium." British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe said he was not giving up a bid to buy Chelsea despite apparent rejection from the U.S. bank handling the sale of the Premier League club. The head of chemical company INEOS announced last Friday a last minute offer of 4.25 billion pounds ($5.35 billion) but a consortium led by LA Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly is considered the preferred bidder.

Russian owner Roman Abramovich, now subject to sanctions by the British government, put the West London club up for sale after Russia`s invasion of Ukraine. "We presented them (New York bank Raine) with an offer at the end of last week, we haven`t heard a great deal back from them which is a bit disappointing," Ratcliffe told the BBC on Wednesday.

"I`d say don`t discount our offer, we are very British and we`ve got great intentions for Chelsea," he added when asked what his message to those overseeing the sale would be. The Daily Telegraph earlier quoted Ineos communications director Tom Crotty saying Raine had ruled out the company`s bid.

The shirt worn by Diego Maradona when he scored two of the most famous goals in soccer history was sold for 7.14 million pounds ($8.93 million) on Wednesday, marking a new auction record for an item of sports memorabilia. Maradona wore Argentina`s No. 10 shirt in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England in Mexico. Six minutes into the second half he put his team ahead by punching the ball into the net for what became known as the "Hand of God" goal.

Four minutes later Maradona dribbled from his own half to score a goal widely considered one of the greatest in World Cup history. England midfielder Steve Hodge got Maradona`s jersey after the game and announced last month he was putting it up for auction after 19 years on display at England`s National Football Museum.

"This historic shirt is a tangible reminder of an important moment not only in the history of sports, but in the history of the 20th century," said Brahm Wachter, Sotheby`s Head of Streetwear and Modern Collectables.
Sotheby`s said the buyer was anonymous.

The sale broke the previous record for sports memorabilia set by the original autograph manuscript of the Olympic Manifesto from 1892, which went for $8.8 million in 2019. The sale of Maradona`s jersey was complicated by claims that the wrong shirt was going under the hammer, with his daughter and ex-wife saying Hodge received the shirt Maradona wore in the first half of the match.

Sotheby`s said they used photomatching technology to "conclusively" match the shirt to both goals by "examining unique details on various elements of the item, including the patch, stripes, and numbering".
Maradona, regarded as one of the world`s best-ever footballers, died in November, 2020 aged 60.

Manchester United must sign two "modern" strikers who will bring real quality to the attacking positions when new manager Erik ten Hag begins his squad rebuild, interim boss Ralf Rangnick said.

Rangnick will step down at the end of the season and the new Austria manager, who will remain at Old Trafford in a consultancy role, said finding someone to share the scoring burden with Cristiano Ronaldo will be one of Ten Hag`s top tasks.

United are sixth in the Premier League and have scored 57 goals in the campaign, 27 fewer than leaders Manchester City.

Portuguese forward Ronaldo has scored 24 goals from 38 games in all competitions, including 18 in the league.
"Cristiano isn`t a central striker or does not want to play in that position," Rangnick said. "It`s obvious the club needs at least two new strikers who give this team more quality and more options. I wouldn`t even call it wingers.

"Two strikers and modern strikers, that do not necessarily have to be wingers. If you look into international football, there aren`t many top teams who still play with two strikers. Most play with either three strikers or a false nine."

Rangnick pointed to the depth of talent at title contenders Manchester City and Liverpool.

"If you look at Liverpool and Manchester City ... they have in their squad five or six top-class strikers," Rangnick said.

"Gabriel Jesus, until four weeks ago, hardly played (for City). Now he`s playing again regularly. You look at the number of players they have and if you ask me is he playing as central striker or winger? Is Jack Grealish a winger or striker?

"They`re all strikers and can play in different positions. They can also switch, they can rotate.

"Those kinds of players, we don`t have that many."

Spanish footballer Santi Mina has been handed a four-year prison sentence after being found guilty of sexual abuse. Mina, who plays as a striker for La Liga club Celta Vigo, is all set to appeal against the verdict. The former Spain U-21 forward was on a trial for the incident which took place in 2017.

At the time Mina was playing for La Liga giants Valencia. He was accused of forcing himself on a woman against her wishes. His former Valencia teammate David Goldar was accused of being his accomplice. While Goldar has been acquitted of all charges, Mina has been sentenced to prison.

The court of Almeria has also imposed a fine of €50,000 on the Celta Vigo star, who has been a regular starter for his club during the ongoing La Liga season. He has been acquitted of sexual assault in the case but has been charged for sexual abuse. His lawyers have confirmed that will appeal against the verdict.

Mina will have to serve the four-year prison sentence if the appeal against the verdict is turned down by the court. Mina would have faced a longer prison sentence of around 8-9 years had he been also found guilty of sexual assault. Judge Tarsila Martinez announced the verdict in the case which has been dragging on for several years now.

European football's governing body UEFA on Monday (May 02) announced strict sanctions against Russian clubs and national teams amid the country's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. UEFA has banned Russian clubs from taking part in European competitions next season, including the coveted UEFA Champions League.

UEFA has also disqualified the Russian women's national team from the Women's European Championship which is scheduled to take place in July this year. The Russian women's team will also not be able to take part in the qualification tournament for the next year's FIFA Women's World Cup.

This is a huge blow for Russia as they continue to face severe sanctions in football after Russian clubs were earlier suspended by FIFA and UEFA in February this year. Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly set to make a sensational return to his former club Real Madrid amid growing uncertainty about his future at his current club Manchester United. United recently appointed Erik ten Hag as their new manager and are planning to give the Dutchman time and freedom to start a much-needed rebuild at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo, who joined United from Juventus last summer, has been brilliant in front of the goal despite being on the wrong side of his 30s. Even at the age of 37, Ronaldo continues to be one of the most prolific goal-scorers in world football and has proved his worth yet again with his goal-scoring heroics for United across all competitions.

Ronaldo has so far scored 23 goals for United across all competitions despite the Red Devils going through a rough patch this season. The Portuguese icon, who is regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, has scored 17 goals in the Premier League and has been consistent when fit.

As per a report in Mirror.co.uk, Ronaldo's goal-scoring exploits in the Premier League have impressed Real Madrid, who are keen to have the Portuguese forward back at the Santiago Bernabeu. Ronaldo, who is one of the greatest ever to have played for Real Madrid, had left the Spanish club to sign for Juventus in 2018 bringing an end to a glorious spell at Real.

Cristiano Ronaldo likely to make sensational return to Real Madrid amid uncertainty at Man Utd - Report

Barcelona defeated lowly Mallorca 2-1 on Sunday to snap a three-match losing run at Camp Nou in all competitions as they climbed to second in LaLiga behind champions Real Madrid. With Real already having secured a record-extending 35th LaLiga title on Saturday, Barcelona made sure the disappointment of being out of the running for the top prize did not distract them from the job at hand.

Memphis Depay`s first-half strike calmed nerves at Camp Nou, where almost half the seats remained empty as fans disappointed with their team`s showing this season opted to stay away. Captain Sergio Busquets extended their lead early in the second half from a rebound.

Mallorca defender Antonio Raillo took advantage of a lapse in Barca`s defense to fire home a consolation from close range in the 79th minute. Xavi Hernandez`s team leapfrogged Sevilla to second in the standings. They are two points ahead of Julen Lopetegui`s side with 66 points.

With four games left, champions Real hold an unassailable 15-point lead over Barca. Mallorca are 16th with 32 points, a point above the drop zone.

"It’s very frustrating seeing Real Madrid win the league so early and with such an advantage,” midfielder Frenkie de Jong told Movistar Plus.

"But we have to admit that we struggled this season, didn’t play to our standards and were not able to compete with them. I hope next season things change for the best."

Barcelona are now in a close race with Sevilla and Atletico Madrid to secure second spot in LaLiga, with the three clubs separated by just five points. The club that finishes second will earn an extra 3.4 million euros ($3.58 million) as they will feature in the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.

Following a brilliant through pass by Jordi Alba, Depay fired Barcelona ahead in the 25th minute with a close-range finish. The Catalans extended their lead early in the second half when Busquets controlled a rebound in a crowded area and found the space to drill the ball into the back of the net.

Mallorca’s goal came from nowhere and the final score made the match look closer than it was. Teenager Ansu Fati was given a standing ovation when he made his first LaLiga appearance for Barca since November, coming on as a second-half substitute.

The 19-year-old has struggled to regain full fitness after suffering a number of injury setbacks over the past year.

Barcelona reclaim second spot in La Liga, defeat Real Mallorca 2-1 at Camp Nou

Son Heung-min continued his prolific season, striking twice after Harry Kane had opened the scoring as Tottenham Hotspur beat Leicester City 3-1 at home on Sunday to boost their hopes of Champions League qualification.

The win moved Spurs a point above North London rivals Arsenal into fourth place in the Premier League, at least for a few hours, with the Gunners at West Ham United later on Sunday.

"Despite making eight changes the Leicester team was good and strong so for this reason we have to be delighted we got three points," said Spurs boss Antonio Conte.

"No one could have imagined when I arrived in November we could be in the (Champions League) race still, but these players are deserving to fight for such an important place. It is not easy to qualify for the Champions League in England."

Son has now scored 19 league goals this season, three fewer than top scorer Mohamed Salah of Liverpool, and the South Korean`s second goal was certainly one of his finest.

Patson Daka had given Spurs an early fright when he hit the post in the 14th minute but eight minutes later Kane put the hosts in front, losing his marker to meet a Son corner with a powerful header.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers rued his side`s poor defensive display, calling the final scoreline slightly harsh.

"Defending corners has been a problem for us all season -- we lack aggression... it was so disappointing. It is something we will have to look at in the summer. The mentality to head the ball is missing," he said.

Spurs were comfortably in charge of the game but it was not until the introduction of Dejan Kulusevski from the bench in the 55th minute that they drove home their superiority.

After a fine, sliding tackle from Cristian Romero won back the ball for Spurs, Kulusevski set up Son with a short ball into the box and the South Korean was given enough space to rotate and drill his finish into the bottom corner.

Then Swedish winger Kulusevski was the provider again, cutting in from the right and feeding Son who opened up and beat Kasper Schmeichel with a wonderful curling shot into the far, top corner.

Son received a thunderous standing ovation from the 59,000 crowd when he was substituted, three minutes after his goal.

Leicester received some reward for their efforts when Kelechi Iheanacho scored in stoppage time with a low drive off the inside of the post.

Son dismissed talk of him winning the Golden Boot but had clearly enjoyed his second goal.

"I was happy to score that really beautiful goal. When I hit it I could see the way the ball flied and I was happy to score that. But I`m more happy to play well and get the three points," he said.
"If I get the chances then I will try to score. The Golden Boot is always a dream but the team is most important. We want to finish in the Champions League and I want to play in the Champions League," added Son.

Manchester United`s interim manager Ralf Rangnick has been appointed as the Austrian national team coach on a two-year deal tasked with qualifying for Euro 2024, the country`s football association president Gerhard Milletich said on Friday.

Rangnick, who will make way at United for Erik ten Hag at the end of the season, has said he will also stay on in a consultancy role at the Premier League club. "It is an honour for me to take over as head coach. I look forward to working with a success-hungry young team and compete at the Euro (2024) in Germany," Rangnick said.

The contract with the 63-year-old will be initially for two years but should the team qualify for Euro 2024 then it is automatically extended for another two years for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, the FA said.

Austria reached the Euro 2020 last 16 but have not qualified for a World Cup since 1998. The FA added that they expected him to take over in late May after the end of the Premier League season. "We are delighted that we have won as our team chief an outstanding expert of international football with Ralf Rangnick," Milletich told a news conference.

"We are convinced that he is the ideal man and with his vision he will take the OEFB (Austrian FA) and the national team forward. Ralf Rangnick is a name that many thought as not possible. A coach of this calibre is a signal not only for the national team but for the entire FA."

The German, who took over at United following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November but had an agreement to work as a consultant for two years when he took the job, will be in charge of Austria ahead of their Nations League matches in June. Manchester United`s Cristiano Ronaldo showed his continued class in front of goal by cancelling out Marcos Alonso`s opener for a dominant Chelsea side in their 1-1 Premier League draw at Old Trafford on Thursday. It was another night of mediocrity from Ralf Rangnick`s United as their troubled season, which began with such high expectations, peters out.

The result leaves Chelsea in third place on 66 points while United are in sixth spot with 55, five points behind fourth-placed Arsenal having played two games more. The only moment of class, to bring some cheer to the United supporters who had again vented their frustrations against the club`s American owners, the Glazer family, came from Ronaldo with a superb piece of control and finishing.

Little has worked for United this season, either under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or German Rangnick, who took over from the Norwegian in November, but Portugal`s five-time Ballon d`Or winner has certainly delivered in front of goal.

Ronaldo`s 62nd-minute strike was his 17th league goal this season with only Mohamed Salah of Liverpool having found the target more often and the former Real Madrid man has claimed eight of his team`s last nine goals.

"Not only the goal Cristiano scored but his whole performance, his attitude at the age of 37, this is not normal to do that," said Rangnick.

"If he plays like he did today he can still be a big help to this team," he added.

"It was a good point for us. In the first half Chelsea dominated the game. You can see that they have top players and are well organised, and it`s not so easy to get hold of them," added the interim manager who will be replaced by Ajax Amsterdam boss Erik ten Hag at the end of the season.

After Chelsea failed to make the most of a series of chances in the first half, with United goalkeeper David De Gea three times denying Kai Havertz, they finally got ahead on the hour. Reece James` cross was flicked on by Havertz and Alonso powered a left-foot volley into the corner of the net.

Within two minutes, though, United were back on level terms when Nemanja Matic scooped the ball over the top and Ronaldo took one touch before slotting past keeper Edouard Mendy. Chelsea went close to a winner in the 79th when Mason Mount set up James with a clever, heeled lay-off but the full-back`s left foot curler struck the post.

Manager Thomas Tuchel was frustrated with the way his team had failed to take the lead during the opening 45 minutes when they dominated the game.

"One team deserved to win and that was us. We didn`t take it. It was a very, very good performance but we were not decisive enough. We lacked a bit of determination in the box to win the game," said the Chelsea manager.

"It sometimes happens. It`s on us to learn from it. You need to be clinical to get the reward. We have to live with a point but it`s not a fair result.

"We worked so hard to get the lead and suddenly the opponent gets one free shot and scores," he added.

Also Read: Italian football agent Mino Raiola tweets from hospital bed to dismiss death rumours After Chelsea failed to make the most of a series of chances in the first half, with United goalkeeper David De Gea three times denying Kai Havertz, they finally got ahead on the hour. The Premier League has set in motion an action plan to aid the progress of young footballers from South Asian backgrounds into professional soccer. The scheme, launched alongside anti-discriminatory body Kick It Out, is part of the No Room For Racism plan, which aims to improve playing, coaching and executive pathways for black, Asian and minority ethnic groups.

It will focus on increasing South Asian representation at the Under-9 to Under-11 level, and will include research into barriers from entry to the sport for young players. According to data released by the Professional Footballers` Association (PFA) in March, there are just 16 professional footballers in the top four tiers of English football with British South Asian heritage.

"The South Asian Action Plan is a long-term project which will enable us to look at and improve the diversity of everyone within the academy system, both on and off the pitch," Premier League director of football Neil Saunders said. "Representation of South Asians on the pitch in elite football is a statistical anomaly," Kick It Out chairman Sanjay Bhandari added.

"Currently, it reflects neither the population nor the popularity of football amongst the British South Asian community. We love the game as fans and want to be seen more on the pitch." English cricket has also been attempting to address a lack of South Asian representation in the sport after a number of players, including former Yorkshire spinner Azeem Rafiq, alleged they were victims of institutional racism at their clubs.

An own goal and a Sadio Mane strike earned Liverpool a 2-0 victory in their Champions League semi-final first-leg against Villarreal on Wednesday, putting Juergen Klopp`s side on course for their third European Cup final in five seasons.

After the drama of Tuesday`s other semi-final, which saw Manchester City beat Real Madrid 4-3 at the Etihad, it was never going to be easy for this game to compete in the entertainment stakes.

But Liverpool did enough to build themselves a solid lead for Tuesday`s return game in Spain where they will be confident of finishing off the job.

Villarreal defended in numbers in the first half to frustrate the six-times European Cup winners, with Thiago Alcantara going closest to breaking the deadlock with a thunderous strike from distance that hit the post.

There were several half-chances for Liverpool with Jordan Henderson drilling into the side netting and Mohamed Salah floating an effort wide, while Mane saw a deflected effort zip just past the post.

But for the most part Unai Emery`s defence coped well, with Pau Torres in command at the back and the central midfield pairing of Dani Parejo and Etienne Capoue protecting the area in front of them.

Liverpool turned it up a notch after the break and moments after Brazilian midfielder Fabinho had seen one effort ruled out for offside, Henderson`s cross was deflected into his own net by Pervis Estupinan to break Villarreal`s resistance.

Able to express themselves with the deadlock broken, Mohamed Salah threaded a sublime pass through for Mane to put the game beyond the visitors 133 seconds later.

Liverpool`s pressing was too much for the Spaniards at times and they had chances to make the result more comprehensive.

Andy Robertson had a fine effort ruled out for offside after connecting with a sweeping cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold, while Virgil van Dijk tried his luck with a long-range thunderbolt which nearly knocked Villarreal keeper Geronimo Rulli off his feet.

Anfield showed its appreciation at the final whistle but in truth this was a game that felt more like a group-stage match than a last-four encounter.

"They are a very organised team and we knew they would make it difficult. It was just important that we kept going and believed that we would eventually break them down. We did that with two good goals," said Henderson.

"Majority of the game, our counter-press was really good. It made it difficult for them. But the game is still alive and it will be tough in Villarreal."
