Robert Lewandowski to Frenkie De Jong: 5 biggest football transfers that can happen this summer

The biggest transfer saga of the season continues to intensify with each passing day as Kylian Mbappe is yet to take a decision on the next step in his career. One of the best young talents in the world at present, Mabppe has already proven himself on the big stage, including the World Cup and has been touted by many to become one of the greats of the game.

Mbappe has been at the centre of a never-ending transfer saga involving Real Madrid and his current club PSG. While Real Madrid have already seen their attempts to lure the French striker to Santiago Bernabeu go in vain, they appear the favourites to sign Mbappe this summer. However, PSG are trying everything to ensure Mbappe stays in Paris.

Reports had emerged last week that Mbappe has agreed terms with Real Madrid and is set to join the Spanish giants ahead of the new season. However, the French star's mother has now revealed he has an agreement with not only Real Madrid but also PSG and is yet to make the final decision.

Fayza Al-Amari, Mbappe's mother and his agent has revealed both clubs have tabled almost similar offers for Mbappe and it is the player's choice now whether he wants to stay at PSG or move to Real Madrid. "We will not have new meetings to discuss Mbappe's future, these meetings are now over," Mbappe's mother told Kora Plus, as quoted by GOAL.

"Now we have found an agreement with both Real Madrid and PSG and the discussions are over because it is Kylian who has to choose now. The two offers are similar, there are no big differences, now we are waiting for Kylian's choice.

"The Real Madrid offer in which we have complete control over image rights, and on the other hand, there is a financial compensation that compensates for this. The two offers do not differ greatly between them," she added.

Mbappe has not finalised his next move yet but the striker reportedly can announce his decision by the end of this month with PSG taking on Metz in their final Ligue 1 game of the season on Sunday. The highly-rated striker was once again among the goals for PSG this season with total 36 goals in 45 games across competitions.

Real Madrid are desperately searching for a striker despite Karim Benzema's red hot form and have their eyes set on Mbappe for quite some time now. It remains to be seen what the French striker will decide as with lucrative offers on the table from both the clubs.

The FIFA Referees Committee on Thursday announced the lists with the names of the selected match officials for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.36 referees, 69 assistant referees, and 24 video match officials (VMOs) have been chosen in close cooperation with the six confederations, based on their quality and the performances delivered at FIFA tournaments as well as at other international and domestic competitions in recent years. Among the selected, for the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup, the FIFA Referees Committee has also appointed three women`s referees and three women`s assistant referees.

"We are very happy that with Stephanie Frappart from France, Salima Mukansanga from Rwanda, and Yoshimi Yamashita from Japan, as well as assistant referees Neuza Back from Brazil, Karen Diaz Medina from Mexico, and Kathryn Nesbitt from the USA, we have been able to call up female match officials for the first time in the history of a FIFA World Cup," said the chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee Pierluigi Collina."

This concludes a long process that began several years ago with the deployment of female referees at FIFA men`s junior and senior tournaments. In this way, we clearly emphasise that it is quality that counts for us and not gender. I would hope that in the future, the selection of elite women`s match officials for important men`s competitions will be perceived as something normal and no longer as sensational. They deserve to be at the FIFA World Cup™ because they constantly perform at a really high level, and that`s the important factor for us," concluded Pierluigi Collina.

Massimo Busacca, FIFA`s Director of Refereeing, ensures the match officials will receive all the necessary support by FIFA, as their preparation is paramount."Thanks to an innovative tracking and support programme, all the match officials can be supervised by FIFA referees` instructors even more closely and intensively than in previous years. This is a very important factor, from which we expect considerable improvements and progress in view of the FIFA World Cup 2022," explained Busacca. The selected match officials will participate in early summer in several seminars (Asuncion, Madrid and Doha), reviewing and analysing video clips of real match situations, and taking part in practical training sessions with players, which will be filmed to enable participants to receive instant feedback from the instructors.

Qatar 2022: In a first, women referees to officiate at men's FIFA World Cup

Amnesty International and other rights groups have called on FIFA to set aside $440 million to compensate migrant workers in Qatar for "human rights abuses" during preparations for the 2022 World Cup. In a letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the groups said world soccer`s governing body should also work with the host nation to protect the rights of migrant workers in the future.

"To remedy the litany of abuses committed since 2010, when FIFA awarded hosting rights to Qatar without requiring any improvement in labour protections, the organisations called on FIFA to at least match the $440m it hands out in prize money at the World Cup," Amnesty said in a statement. A 48-page report by Amnesty, Reality Check 2021, said that practices such as withholding salaries and charging workers to change jobs were rife.

The Qatar government, which has denied the accusations, said it had introduced various reforms in the last five years, including a new national minimum wage and the removal of exit permits. "The progress made by Qatar is irrefutable. The Workers` Support and Insurance Fund, established by the government to provide payments owed to workers, has disbursed 110 million pounds ($136.37 million) in the past two years alone," the labour ministry said in a statement to Reuters.

"The new report undermines much of the goodwill that has been generated. Engagement will always yield better results than condemnation, especially when they are unreasonably demanded." In response to the letter, FIFA said it was assessing Amnesty`s proposition and implementing an "unprecedented due diligence process in relation to the protection of workers involved".

FIFA added that it was working with the organising committee and had already compensated a number of workers. "As part of the Supreme Committee`s effort to ensure repayment of recruitment fees, workers have received payments of a total $22.6 million as of December 2021, with an additional $5.7 million committed by contractors," it said.

The World Cup will run from Nov. 21 to Dec 18.

In a landmark move, young English soccer player Jake Daniels came out in the open of being gay earlier this week. Thus, he became the first male active professional football player (since 1990 when Justin Fashanu revealed the same) who openly revealed his sexuality, i.e. being gay.

The Blackpool forward Daniels made the announcement after the end of his first season as a professional player at the second division club. In a statement after the announcement, the 17-year-old stated, "This season has been a fantastic one for me on the pitch. But off the pitch I’ve been hiding the real me and who I really am. I’ve known my whole life that I’m gay, and I now feel that I’m ready to come out and be myself. It’s a step into the unknown being one of the first footballers in this country to reveal my sexuality."

Daniels named Josh Cavallo of Australian team Adelaide United, who is the only gay man who has come out in the open of being gay and is playing in a top division world soccer, as his inspiration behind the recent revelation. Daniels further added, "I’ve hated lying my whole life and feeling the need to change to fit in. I want to be a role model myself by doing this. I just want to tell them that you don’t have to change who you are, or how you should be, just to fit in. You being you, and being happy, is what matters most.”

The Japan Football Association (JFA) has been informally approached about the possibility of replacing China as hosts of next year`s Asian Cup, Chairman Kozo Tashima told Nikkan Sports. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced last Saturday that China had pulled out of hosting the 24-team continental championship, citing the COVID-19 situation in the country.

"We were sounded out," Tashima told the newspaper, without giving further details. "If Japan were able to host, there`s no question that it would be pretty exciting." The JFA was not immediately available for comment. Japan has the stadium infrastructure in place to stage the tournament in June and July next year, having co-hosted the World Cup in 2002, rugby`s global showpiece in 2019 and the Olympic soccer tournament last year.

Other potential hosts such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Australia would need the tournament moved back to late 2023 or early 2024. Qatar, which will host the World Cup later this year, and Saudi Arabia would be inhospitable in the middle of the year because of the summer heat, while Australia is co-hosting the women`s World Cup in July and August 2023.

Last year`s Tokyo Olympics were held in a bio-secure bubble with limited local crowds because of fears of athletes and officials spreading the novel coronavirus. Japan said on Tuesday, however, that it would start conducting "test tourism" in the form of limited package tours in May as a way of gathering information prior to a full re-opening of the country to tourism.

Tourists have not been permitted to enter Japan since the country adopted strict border controls in 2020 at the start of the pandemic. Japan has won the Asian Cup a record four times and previously hosted the tournament in 1992, when only eight teams took part. The AFC, which has not responded to requests for information about the process of replacing the host country, is meeting for its 32nd Congress in Kuala Lumpur later on Wednesday.

The Japan Football Association (JFA) has been informally approached about the possibility of replacing China as hosts of next year`s Asian Cup, Chairman Kozo Tashima told Nikkan Sports.

"If Japan were able to host, there`s no question that it would be pretty exciting." U.S soccer men`s and women`s national team players will receive equal pay and prize money, including at World Cups, after they came together to agree on landmark collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) with the U.S Soccer Federation on Wednesday.

U.S. Soccer becomes the first federation in the world to equalize FIFA World Cup prize money awarded to both women`s and men`s teams for participation in their respective World Cups.

The CBAs, the first of their kind, will run through 2028, covering the next two World Cups and Olympic cycles. They will also keep the players among the highest-paid national team players in the world, U.S. Soccer said.

"This is a truly historic moment. These agreements have changed the game forever here in the United States and have the potential to change the game around the world," said U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone.

Under the new agreement, the men`s and women`s national teams will have identical performance-based bonuses for all games and competitions. The women`s team, known as the USWNT, will no longer receive guaranteed salaries and have the same pay-to-play payments as their male counterparts, called the USMNT.

In another first for U.S. Soccer and the players` unions, U.S. Soccer will share a portion of its broadcast, partner and sponsorship revenue with a 50-50 split of that share divided equally between USWNT and USMNT.

U.S. Soccer said the new revenue-sharing framework will "provide additional encouragement for all parties to work together to grow the game". The agreements also improve player health and safety, data privacy and the need to balance responsibilities to both club and country, the federation said.

"The accomplishments in this CBA are a testament to the incredible efforts of WNT (women`s national team) players on and off the field," said USWNT player and USWNT`s player association President Becky Sauerbrunn.

The agreement came three months after the USWNT and U.S. Soccer agreed to resolve a years-long dispute over equal pay. It ended a dispute dating back to 2016 when some players filed a federal wage discrimination complaint claiming they were paid less than male players even though they generate more income for the United States Soccer Federation.

"The gains we have been able to achieve are both because of the strong foundation laid by the generations of WNT players that came before the current team and through our union’s recent collaboration with our counterparts at the USNSTPA and leadership at U.S. Soccer," Sauerbrunn added.

Joel Matip`s stooping header gave Liverpool a 2-1 win at Southampton on Tuesday to keep the Premier League title race alive until the final day of the season. The result leaves Liverpool a point behind leaders Manchester City ahead of Sunday`s final round of games when City are at home to Aston Villa and Liverpool host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.

City have 90 points with Liverpool on 89, meaning that victory for Pep Guardiola`s side against Villa, managed by former Reds captain Steven Gerrard, would secure their fourth league title in five seasons.

Juergen Klopp changed nine of the team who beat Chelsea on penalties in the FA Cup final on Saturday with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah injured but several others rested. Klopp`s choice was looking questionable when Southampton took a 13th-minute lead through a wonderful Nathan Redmond strike after the winger had cut in from the left flank.

Roberto Firmino, who led the line in the absence of Sadio Mane, had a header ruled out for offside as the visitors sought a quick way back into the game.

Liverpool, who face Real Madrid in the Champions League final on May 28, drew level in the 27th minute with Takumi Minamino, who spent a loan spell with Southampton last season, firing a fierce shot in at the near post.

Defender Joe Gomez, whose Liverpool career has been hampered by injuries, had to be substituted at the interval after suffering what appeared to be an ankle injury just before the break. The goal had taken the wind out of Southampton`s sails and it was no surprise when Liverpool secured the three points after Kostas Tsimikas`s corner was headed in by Matip in the 67th minute.

It was a weak effort by Southampton and Liverpool had little trouble seeing out the rest of the game and setting up what could be a tense final day.
James Milner, the 36-year-old utility player who was given a rare start, praised the back-up players for the way they took on the game.

Liverpool beat Southampton 2-1 to take Premier League title race down to the wire

A libel trial pitting the wives of two former England soccer strikers Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy saw Vardy`s wife Rebekah take the stand on Tuesday and deny accusations she had leaked stories to the press about Rooney`s wife Coleen.

Their battle, mixing glamour, amateur sleuthing and intimate revelations has gripped the media and public. Coleen Rooney, 36, is the wife of former England ace Wayne who holds the record for the most international goals for his country, and Rebekah Vardy`s husband Jamie has also played and scored for the national side

Vardy, 40, is suing her former friend for libel after Rooney accused her of leaking stories about her after staging an elaborate sting operation to find out who was passing on details of her private life to the Sun tabloid.

The battle has been dubbed the "WAGatha Christie" case, a reference to the "WAG" moniker given to the glamorous group of footballers` wives and girlfriends and Rooney`s detective work.

"I didn`t leak anything," Vardy told London`s High Court, on the first day of the trial, having passed by Rooney and her husband to reach the witness box. "I didn`t give any information to a newspaper."

The intrigue began almost three years ago when Rooney became suspicious about stories appearing in the Sun involving information about her from her personal Instagram account. She turned detective to try to find out who the culprit was.

She said she blocked everyone from viewing her account except one person and then posted a series of false stories to see whether they leaked out, which she said they had. She wrote on her social media accounts that only one person had viewed the false stories, concluding with the revelation: "It`s ... Rebekah Vardy`s account."

Facing questions from David Sherborne, Rooney`s lawyer, Vardy agreed leaking private, personal information was wrong. She was then quizzed about a 2004 newspaper interview she had given in which she detailed a sexual encounter with singer Peter Andre with derogatory details about his genitalia.

"I was forced into doing something I didn`t want to do," she told the packed wood-panelled courtroom, blaming her ex-husband for making her do the interview. "It was something that I was forced to say."

Sherborne also asked her about a message exchange she had with her agent Caroline Watt in 2017 about photoshopped photos of an unnamed friend to make her look thinner in which Vardy said: "Can we not leak a story?"
Vardy told the court she "didn`t mean it to say that" and she had wanted to do a story about promoting positive body image.

Earlier Hugh Tomlinson, Vardy`s lawyer, had said his client had received abuse and threats online, after Rooney`s post - constructed he said like a "mini-whodunnit" - had been liked by 193,000 people on Instagram and 300,000 on Twitter.

"She needs to be able to clear her name," Tomlinson said.

Sherborne argued Vardy had conducted a campaign of "deliberate destruction of evidence" by deleting media files and WhatsApp messages.

"Like any good detective story, you never find the person responsible standing over the body with the smoking gun in her hand," Sherborne said.

He suggested that Vardy had used her agent Watt as a "hitman" to leak the stories on her behalf. Vardy has accepted that Watt might be responsible, but denied any knowledge or authorising her to do so, Tomlinson said.

"She accepts that it`s possible that Ms Watt was the source," he told the court.

In a plot twist of which Agatha Christie herself might have approved, Watt`s phone had ended up at the bottom of the

North Sea after she accidentally dropped it over the side of a boat. The trial is due to last seven days with Rooney, who will have to prove that her accusations are either substantially true or in the public interest, and her husband due to give evidence.

WAGatha Christie: Coleen Rooney's lawyer claims Rebekah Vardy's agent leaked stories on her behalf

China`s withdrawal from hosting the 2023 Asian Cup could see the showpiece shift west to the Gulf, where new infrastructure and voracious demand for major events has made the region a magnet for international tournaments.

Having planned to hold the Asian Cup across 10 cities in June-July next year, China dropped the 24-team tournament due to "exceptional circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic", the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said over the weekend.

The AFC said it would name a new host in due course but provided no detail and declined to provide immediate comment to Reuters. AFC member nations were in the dark on Monday about the next steps.

"This is quite an unusual situation and so there’s no specific process that we are aware of on how things could go," a spokesperson for the Korean Football Association (KFA) told Reuters.

"We just know that China has given up."

The AFC has little time to appraise candidates and may not have a diverse set to choose from. Governing body Football Australia declined to comment on whether it would put up its hand to replace China but referred to its busy calendar in 2023 as co-hosts of the Women`s World Cup with New Zealand, which starts on July 20.

All India Football Federation general secretary Kushal Das said India, which held the 2022 women`s Asian Cup this year, was focusing on its bid for the 2027 men`s tournament and had not expressed interest in stepping in for 2023.

South Korea, which originally lost out on its 2023 bid to China, had no comment on hosting but said it would require further consultation with home authorities.

"Basically, to host an international game .... firstly there should be talks with the government and the local authorities, but we haven’t heard or held any discussions on that yet," the KFA spokesperson said.

Apart from India, reigning Asian Cup champions Qatar, Iran and Saudi Arabia have all expressed an interest or submitted bids for 2027.

Qatar hosts the 2022 World Cup from Nov. 21 at a raft of purpose-built stadiums and may be best placed to slot in for the Asian Cup.

The 1988 and 2011 Asian Cup hosts, Qatar`s ambitions of becoming a global sporting hub have been backed by its ruling emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and underpinned by its gas wealth.

It may come too soon for Saudi Arabia, which has made an aggressive entry into the international sport hosting market in recent years. The Saudi bid for 2027 included the building of three new stadiums and expansion of three existing venues.

The region`s searing summers would mean both Qatar and Saudi Arabia would need to ask the AFC to move the tournament to cooler months later in the year or in early-2024.

Should few clear alternatives emerge, the AFC would likely prove accommodating to such a request, sending the tournament back to the Gulf four years after the 2019 edition in the United Arab Emirates.

China withdrawal could see 2023 Asian Cup heading west

A double from Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez earned Inter Milan a 3-1 win at Cagliari on Sunday, a victory that ensured the Serie A title race will go to the final weekend for the first time since 2008.

With leaders AC Milan having beaten Atalanta 2-0 at the San Siro earlier on Sunday, Inter had to win in Sardinia to keep the title race alive, edging in front in the 25th minute through Matteo Darmian.

Martinez added a second six minutes after the break for Inter and they appeared on course for a comfortable ninth win in 10 matches in all competitions, before Charalampos Lykogiannis arrowed in a strike out of nowhere to get Cagliari back in it.

Inter suffered some nervy moments before Martinez`s quality shone through at the last, as his classy finish six minutes from time finally ended Cagliari`s hopes of a comeback.

The victory ensured Inter remained two points behind Milan going into the final round. The champions must beat Sampdoria at home on Sunday, and hope Milan lose at Sassuolo, if they are to defend the Scudetto.

"It wasn`t easy after Milan`s win, but the team played really well against an opponent who is problematic on their own ground," coach Simone Inzaghi told DAZN.

"I congratulate my team, because this was by no means to be taken for granted, especially after playing 120 minutes on Wednesday (in the Coppa Italia final).

"Naturally, we are behind, so we need a victory and for them (Milan) to lose. It`s happened before, I won with Lazio when we were two points behind and Juventus lost to Perugia (in 2000), so it can happen again."

Inter thought they had settled their nerves in the must-win contest when Milan Skriniar bundled the ball into the net early on, only for VAR to rule the Slovakian defender had used his hand to score.

The visitors did not have to wait much longer for one to count, however, as Ivan Perisic crossed for Darmian to head home his second league goal of the season.

Martinez almost added another on the cusp of halftime, before hammering home the second - his 20th league goal of the campaign. The Argentine became the sixth player in Inter`s history to score 20 goals in a single Serie A term before turning 25.

In cruise control, Inter stood off Lykogiannis and his strike was unstoppable, giving the home fans hope.
But it was Martinez who had the final say, lofting his second of the match into the net.

Cagliari`s fate will also be sealed on the final day of the season. They remain in the bottom three, two points behind Salernitana in 17th. The Sardinians must beat already-relegated Venezia on the final day to have any hope of survival.

Genoa, who have spent the last 15 seasons in Serie A, were relegated on Sunday after their 3-0 loss at Napoli.

A double from Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez earned Inter Milan a 3-1 win at Cagliari on Sunday, a victory that ensured the Serie A title race will go to the final weekend for the first time since 2008.

Also Read: Premier League: Harry Kane penalty sends Tottenham into top four with win over Burnley "It wasn`t easy after Milan`s win, but the team played really well against an opponent who is problematic on their own ground," coach Simone Inzaghi told DAZN. "I congratulate my team, because this was by no means to be taken for granted, especially after playing 120 minutes on Wednesday (in the Coppa Italia final). "Naturally, we are behind, so we need a victory and for them (Milan) to lose. It`s happened before, I won with Lazio when we were two points behind and Juventus lost to Perugia (in 2000), so it can happen again." Inter thought they had settled their nerves in the must-win contest when Milan Skriniar bundled the ball into the net early on, only for VAR to rule the Slovakian defender had used his hand to score. The visitors did not have to wait much longer for one to count, however, as Ivan Perisic crossed for Darmian to head home his second league goal of the season. An absorbing Wembley showpiece had somehow ended 0-0 after extra time despite a raft of chances and near misses for both sides with fine performances from the two goalkeepers.

Substitute Kostas Tsimikas slotted the winning penalty after Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta's had hit the post and Alisson had saved Mason Mount's effort.

Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy had kept his side alive when he saved Senegal team mate Sadio Mane's penalty but it proved to no avail as Liverpool lifted the trophy for the first time since 2006.

"This is something that will give us even more confidence to keep on going in the Premier League and also for the Champions League final," Alisson, who made a crucial save from Marcos Alonso in the first half, said.

Liverpool had the best of a pulsating first half with Luis Diaz close several times, before Chelsea came back in the second, with Alonso rattling the crossbar.

Klopp's Liverpool enjoyed the greater possession and finished the 90 minutes on top, Diaz and Andrew Robertson both hitting the post in the final 10 minutes and the indefatigable Diaz whistling a shot just wide in the 90th.

Tired legs on a warm day contributed to a rather anticlimactic extra time with both sides appearing to have decided to take their chances in a shootout.

Sadly for Chelsea, as in February, it was a case of so near yet so far although manager Thomas Tuchel had no regrets.

"Like in the last final, the League Cup, no regrets. I told the team I was proud," he told reporters. "We played 240 minutes in two finals against maybe the most dangerous attacking team in the world and it's 0-0."

Quadruple still possible as Liverpool edge Chelsea to win FA Cup

Manchester City fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with West Ham United on Sunday and stay in charge of their thrilling Premier League title battle with Liverpool.

Juergen Klopp`s team play at Southampton on Tuesday and City had the chance to open a six-point lead at the top but the draw at the London Stadium left them four points above Liverpool with one game left.

Victory on the final day at home to Aston Villa would guarantee City their fourth league title in five seasons, regardless of Liverpool`s results against Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Pep Guardiola`s team will win the title on Tuesday if Liverpool lose at Southampton.

West Ham`s Jarrod Bowen struck twice in the first half, but Jack Grealish pulled one back for City early in the second half before Vladimir Coufal scored an own goal. Riyad Mahrez missed a golden chance to seal a City win after he missed a late penalty.

After City defender Oleksandr Zinchenko lost track of Bowen, the West Ham forward raced on to Pablo Fornals` pass over the top and took it round goalkeeper Ederson for a clinical finish in the 24th minute.

Bowen added another in the 45th minute when Michail Antonio sent him through with a clever pass and the English forward`s low strike from the edge of the box found the bottom corner.

City bounced back in the second half after playmaker Grealish scored for the visitors in the 49th minute with a volley after Rodri headed a high ball over to him in the box.

West Ham had the chance to add their third goal in the 65th minute when a loose back pass from Fernandinho sent Antonio through on goal but the Jamaica forward sent his shot over the bar.

The hosts were left to rue the missed chance as they conceded an own goal, with West Ham defender Coufal heading a cross from Mahrez into his own net in the 69th minute.

Mahrez could have become City`s hero in the 86th minute but his spot-kick was kept out by keeper Lukasz Fabianski after Craig Dawson brought down Gabriel Jesus in the penalty box.

The result guaranteed West Ham European football next season as they stayed seventh on 56 points.

The game also marked Mark Noble`s farewell game in front of home fans, with the midfielder set to bring the curtain down on his 18-year, one-club career at the end of the season.

The Norwegian will join Manchester City next season in a multi-year deal reportedly worth up to 300 million euros.

Hertha took the lead with an 18th minute penalty, after Ishak Belfodil was brought down in the box and the Algerian stepped up to convert the spot kick himself.

Dortmund, bidding farewell to several players as well as long-time sports director Michael Zorc, took a long time to react.

But Dortmund eventually got a penalty of their own for a hand ball by Marvin Plattenhardt, and Haaland, who also scored on his debut in the Bundesliga, scored on his final appearance for the club to make it all square.

Bundesliga: Sloppy Bayern Munich draw in season finale, Robert Lewandowski ready to leave

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said he had turned down Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich "a few times" to stay at Anfield and urged his side to "enjoy the journey" as they keep up their quadruple chase against Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Liverpool won the League Cup in February. They trail Premier League leaders Manchester City by three points with two games to go, and they will face Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Asked about the challenges the side face, Klopp told reporters at Liverpool`s training ground on Friday: "Which club should I go to, to have a different situation? I could have gone to Bayern a few times, I could have won more titles in my life, pretty sure I would say - I didn`t do it."

"I had a contract here... and that`s completely fine. The world is not full of winners, the world is full of triers hopefully. And I try and sometimes I win with some other people together. I am happy with that."

Liverpool are aiming to win the FA Cup for the first time since 2006, having lost to Chelsea in their last final appearance a decade ago.

"It would mean the world to us, that`s the truth," said Klopp, who signed a new contract last month that will keep him at the club until 2026.

The German added that they were desperate for FA Cup success but they would savour a remarkable season even if they lose.

Real Madrid continued their preparations for the Champions League final with a comfortable 6-0 win at home to Levante. First-half goals from Ferland Mendy, Karim Benzema, Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr gave Madrid a 4-0 lead as Carlo Ancelotti continued to rotate his side ahead of the final in two and a half weeks.
Vinicius scored his second of the game in the 68th minute and completed his hat-trick seven minutes from time against a rival that appeared to accept their fate on Thursday night.

The result means Levante become the first side of the season to be relegated to the second division, given they have an inferior head-to-head goal average with fourth from bottom Cadiz. Also, Benzema scripted another illustrious feat, equalling Raul's incredible goal record (323), with the list being topped by Cristiano Ronaldo for the club (with 451 goals).

Real Sociedad beat Cadiz 3-0 in the first kick-off of the day to ensure they will play at least Conference League next season. Alexander Sorloth put the home side ahead in the 19th minute of the game and penalties scored by Adnan Januzaj in the 53rd minute and Portu deep in injury time mean the team from San Sebastian can finish no lower than seventh this season.

The result also means that Cadiz still have work to do to avoid relegation and this weekend`s match against Alaves will be vital to their survival. Villarreal also took a big step towards qualifying for Europe next season as they won 5-1 away to Rayo Vallecano.

Alfonso Pedraza put the visitors ahead in the third minute and although Sergi Guardiola pulled a goal back for Rayo, Juan Foyth, Paco Alcacer and Pau Torres made it 4-1 to the visitors before halftime. Pedraza netted a second in the second half to seal an easy win for the visitors.

The win leaves Villarreal four points clear of eighth-place Athletic Club Bilbao, who lost 1-0 to Granada on Tuesday. Other results this week saw FC Barcelona win 3-1 at home to Celta, while Atletico Madrid assured a place in next season`s Champions League with a 2-0 win in Elche, who are safe from relegation.

Veteran defender Giorgio Chiellini confirmed he will leave Juventus at the end of the season. The 37-year-old, who is third on Juventus` all-time appearances list behind Alessandro Del Piero and Gianluigi Buffon, made the announcement after his side lost 4-2 to Inter Milan in Wednesday`s Coppa Italia final. "We had these 10 magnificent years, it is up to the others to continue now," he told Sport Mediaset. "I did everything I could, I hope that I left something.

"On Monday I will say goodbye to my Juventus Stadium, then if I have still got something in the tank might have a run-out in Florence (in Juve`s final league game next weekend). "It is my choice 100 percent, I am happy to leave at such a high level, because for many years I have said I didn`t want to finish struggling and not being able to play at my level. I gave it my all, soon I will be the biggest Juventus fan from the outside. After so many years within this club, you cannot shake it off."

Despite scoring four goals, de Bruyne reckoned that it actually should've been five. "It’s just [a case of] whenever you get the opportunity, don’t hesitate,” he was quoted as saying by The Guardian after the match. “I’m never afraid to shoot with the left; even if it doesn’t go in, it creates a problem for the opposition. If you miss you miss, it doesn’t matter, you make mistakes in the game and you go again. It should have been five, to be honest,” he added.

Inter Milan won the Coppa Italia after an extra-time double from Croatian forward Ivan Perisic earned his side a 4-2 victory over Juventus in Wednesday`s final, ensuring Massimiliano Allegri`s team will finish the season trophyless.

Inter, who are still in the running to retain their Serie A title this term, started on the front foot, racing into the lead after six minutes in the Stadio Olimpico as Nicolo Barella arrowed a stunning strike into the top corner. Juventus responded well with Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic denied by a superb save from Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic in a pulsating first half, before defender Alex Sandro levelled five minutes after the break.

Vlahovic then completed the turnaround less than two minutes later to spark wild scenes of celebration among Juve`s players, but Hakan Calhanoglu`s expertly-converted penalty took the match to extra time.
Perisic then took centre stage, firing his side in front once more with another penalty, again emphatically converted, before making sure of a first Coppa Italia triumph since 2011 for Inter with a powerful finish into the top corner.

Allegri, who was sent to the stands for protesting against a decision late on, will become the first Juventus manager since 2011 to finish a season without having won a single trophy, with Juve fourth in Serie A and out of title contention.

"We just have to congratulate Inter for winning," Allegri told Sport Mediaset. "We do not win a single trophy this season, we have to retain that anger for next season, when we must get back to winning.
"It was a good performance, but we fell away towards the end, there were players who were not fully fit and did all they could. It`s disappointing, but we can only thank them for their efforts. We learn from these experiences.

"It`s a pity, because we didn`t get the win against Inter in Serie A and did not take our revenge this evening either. Incidents can go against you some days, in favour the others." Things are looking rosier for Simone Inzaghi in his first season as Inter boss, with two trophies under his belt now after adding the Coppa Italia to his side`s Supercoppa triumph this term.

The Serie A title, where AC Milan have a two-point lead over their rivals with two games to play, is the next target. "This team never gives up," he said. "If I ever needed a response, I got nothing but responses from this side from July to today, it`s been one long whirlwind of emotions.

"Now we have two more Serie A matches to play and we want to end the season as well as possible.
"It is also only fair we enjoy these moments, it had been a decade since we won the Coppa Italia or the Supercoppa, so I am happy for the club, these amazing players and the fans who stuck by us from start to finish."

The 'Wagatha Christie' court trial began in London on Tuesday (May 10) as two of England's high-profile football spouses went up against each other in a legal battle pending for over a couple of years now. Coleen Rooney had accused Rebekah Vardy of leaking fake stories about her in the media, including a private Instagram post in 2019.

Followed by Coleen's allegations, Vardy decided to sue her after denying the allegations against her. Rebekah also filed a libel suit against Coleen, who is the wife of former England football team and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney. Rebekah, on the other hand, is the spouse of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.

Both Rooney and Vardy played together for England in the Euros 2016 when pictures of Coleen and Rebekah supporting their respective husbands from the stands had gone viral on social media. However, it didn't take much time for the friends to turn foes after Coleen made some shocking allegations against Rebekah.

All you need to know about the Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy feud

The feud stems back to October, 2019 when Coleen suspected someone was leaking her private stuff to the media. She claimed she posted fake stories on her Instagram and restricted them to limited accounts that could view them. Coleen said she blocked everyone apart from an account belonging to Vardy to see if the information from her stories would still get leaked.

The information did get leaked and appeared in The Sun - A leading English daily leading to a never-ending feud between the two football WAGs. Coleen took to Twitter to allege it was Rebekah who had been leaking her information to the media all this while.

While it was reported that Rebekah did try to explain her side of the story to Coleen on phone and also posted on social media, there was no response from Coleen. Rebekah later decided to sue Coleen for libel which gave birth to the 'Wagatha Christie' trial.

The name 'Wagatha Christie' came from the famous term 'Wag' which is commonly used for the wives and girlfriends of sports stars.

As the trial began on Tuesday, Rebekah's lawyer Hugh Tomlinson defended his client by denying Coleen's claims that she leaked her information to the media. The lawyer also revealed that Rebekah had made "strenuous but unsuccessful attempts" to settle the matter but Coleen's post accusing her was not taken down.

Both Coleen and Rebekah arrived at the Royal Courts of Justice in London on Tuesday where a group of photographers waited in anticipation for the two star WAGs. The trial is expected to last a week where both Coleen and Rebekah will testify against each other.

While the trial has been subject to intense media coverage, it has been labelled as a 'waste of time' by legal experts. As per reports, the legal costs of the trial are expected to go past 1 million pounds and the winner will recover around only 70% of the money spent during the legal proceedings.

The 'Wagatha Christie' court trial began in London on Tuesday (May 10) as two of England's high-profile football spouses went up against each other in a legal battle pending for over a couple of years now.

Manchester City have reached an agreement to sign Norwegian striker Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund on July 1, the two clubs announced on Tuesday. "The transfer remains subject to the club finalising terms with the player," City said.

City did not provide financial details of the deal but German media reported that the total cost of buying Haaland in a multi-year deal could exceed 300 million euros ($316.08 million), including his salary, agent fees and bonuses.

Dortmund said once the transfer goes through, the club expects a "positive effect on the key earnings figures for the 2022/2023 financial year" in the range of 35-40 million euros.

The 21-year-old striker`s value has skyrocketed thanks to his prolific form at Dortmund after joining them from the Austrian side Salzburg two years ago. British media reported Haaland had passed his medical on Monday, with Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp saying it was a transfer that will "set new levels" in the Premier League.

Haaland has scored 85 goals in 88 games for Dortmund since his debut in January 2020. He was last season`s top scorer in the Champions League as well as the UEFA Nations League. This season he has 21 goals in the Bundesliga from 20 starts, with Dortmund set to finish second in the league behind champions Bayern Munich when the season concludes on Saturday.

But Dortmund failed to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages, dropping to the Europa League where they did not make it past the playoffs. City have been in the hunt to replace Sergio Aguero after the Argentine striker -- the club`s all-time top scorer with 254 goals -- moved to Barcelona on a free transfer last year.

Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus failed to seal his place in the starting lineup, with Guardiola often deploying a midfielder as a `false nine` leading the attack. Dortmund are interested in Salzburg forward Karim Adeyemi as a possible Haaland replacement.

Manchester United are set to undergo major changes after another disappointing season but former midfielder David Beckham hopes Cristiano Ronaldo sticks around for at least another year.
United`s 4-0 hammering at Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend means they cannot finish higher than sixth.

The Old Trafford side have appointed Ajax Amsterdam manager Erik ten Hag to replace interim boss Ralf Rangnick from the end of the current campaign, with the Dutchman expected to revamp the squad during the close season. Ronaldo has scored 24 goals in all competitions this season and Beckham, who also wore United`s number seven jersey, hopes the 37-year-old forward will stay on.

"It`s important to him -- we all know how much United means to him. He`s still doing what he does best," Beckham told Sky Sports at the Miami Grand Prix. "To be doing what he`s doing at his age is really incredible so hopefully it continues for another year or two."

Beckham, who won six Premier League titles at United, said fans had stuck by the side through some difficult times, with United`s last league title coming in the 2012-2013 season. "It`s been a tough end to the season. But it is the end of the season, I`m sure a lot of fans are thankful of that because it`s been a tough one -- full of ups and downs," he said. "The players have done what they can do best, so has the manager. I turned up at the stadium a few months back and every seat was filled so the fans still believe, they support, they turn up for the team.

"It`s what United fans do. There's not many teams to have gone through what they`ve gone through in the last few years and still filling out their stadium. There will be changes."
