Bushfires on the West coast of Maui island were fuelled by high winds from a nearby hurricane. The fire spread rapidly and engulfed the seaside town of Lahaina.</p>

<p>The wildfire spread so&nbsp;rapidly that many were caught off-guard. Some people were trapped in the streets, others jumped into the ocean to escape the advancing flames.</p>

<p>"It really looks like somebody came along and just bombed the whole town. It's completely devastated," said Canadian Brandon Wilson, who had travelled to Hawaii with his wife to celebrate their 25th anniversary, but was at the airport trying to get a flight out. He was quoted by AFP.</p>

<p>"It was really hard to see," he said, teary-eyed. "You feel so bad for people. They lost their homes, their lives, their livelihoods."</p>

<p>The Hawaii fire has come in the wake of other extreme weather events and wildfires in North America in the past few months. Record-breaking wildfires are still burning across Canada, a nation usually associated with its harsh winters.</p>

<p>Temperatures have soared in Europe and parts of Asia. These regions have also witnessed widespread wildfires.</p>

<p>"What we've seen today has been catastrophic... likely the largest natural disaster in Hawaii state history," Governor Josh Green said as quoted by AFP</p>

<p>"In 1960 we had 61 fatalities when a large wave came through Big Island," he said earlier in the day, referring to a tragedy that struck a year after Hawaii became the 50th US state.</p>

<p>"This time, it's very likely that our death totals will significantly exceed that."</p>

<h2><strong>The fatalities</strong></h2>

<p>As per information from Maui County officials, by 9 pm Thursday (0700 GMT Friday), 55 people had been killed and it was feared that the number would increase.</p>

<p>The devastating fire has forced thousands of people to evacuate. Around 1,400 people were waiting at the main airport in Kahului overnight&nbsp;trying to get out.</p>

<p>Maui County has asked visitors to leave "as soon as possible," and organised buses to move evacuees from shelters to the airport.</p>

<p>The island attracts about a third of all the visitors who come to Hawaii to spend their holidays with their families and loved ones.</p>

Greece minister holds ‘arsonists’ responsible for most of 667 wildfires

<p>A major fire broke out on a cargo vessel carrying around 3,000 vehicles off the Dutch coast on Wednesday (July 26), killing one crew member, believed to be an Indian citizen, and injuring others.</p>

<p>Dutch broadcaster NOS said that all the crew, 23 in total, were Indian. Except for the lone casualty, all were safely evacuated.</p>

<p>The 199-metre Panama-registered Fremantle Highway caught fire on Tuesday (July 25) when it was sailing in the North Sea, some 27 kilometres north of Ameland, The Netherlands. It was headed from Germany to Egypt.</p>

<p>The Dutch Kustwacht (Coast Guard) received a distress call around midnight after the crew member’s attempt to extinguish the fire was unsuccessful.</p>

<p>Rescue ships sprayed water onto the burning boat to cool it down, but using too much water risked its sinking, the Dutch coastguard said, reports Reuters news agency.</p>

<p>A salvage vessel was hooked on to stop it from drifting.</p>

<h2><strong>'Vessel can still burn for days'</strong></h2>

<p>Officials said that the vessel "could still burn for days" even though its sinking may not pose any major environmental risk.</p>

<p>"The fire is most definitely still not controlled. It's a very hard fire to extinguish, possibly because of the cargo the ship was transporting," said Edwin Versteeg, a spokesperson for the Dutch Department of Waterways and Public Works.</p>

<p>Though the exact cause of fire is yet to be ascertained, Dutch public broadcaster NOS citing a coast guard official reported that one of the 25 electric cars onboard caught fire, and subsequently engulfed all the cars.</p>

<p>Around 350 of the total 2,857 vehicles on the ship on board were Mercedes-Benz cars, the company said.</p>

<p>The ship was still burning some 27 nautical miles (50 kilometres) north of the Dutch island of Ameland — located close to a major environmental and UNESCO heritage site</p>

<p>"The crew tried to put out the fire themselves&nbsp;but failed. Unfortunately, one person died and several others were injured," the&nbsp;coast guard said in a statement.</p>

<h2><strong>Indian embassy reacts</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile, the Embassy in the Netherlands said that it is in touch with the family members of the crew, and simultaneously coordinating with the Dutch authorities for all possible assistance.</p>

<p>“We are deeply saddened by the incident involving Ship ‘Fremantle Highway’ in North Sea, resulting in the death of an Indian seafarer &amp; injuries to the crew. Embassy of India is in touch with family of the deceased &amp; is assisting in repatriation of the mortal remains,” it posted on social media platform X, previously known as Twitter.</p>

<p>Embassy is also in touch with the remaining 20 injured crew members, who are safe and receiving medical attention. All possible assistance is being extended in coordination with the Dutch authorities and the shipping company.”</p>

<p>According to an AFP correspondent, smoke was seen rising from the Swedish embassy building and many demonstrators were still present on the scene after the torching of the embassy as authorities deployed a large number&nbsp;of Iraqi riot police.</p>

<p>"We are mobilised today to denounce the burning of the Quran, which is all about love and faith," said protester Hassan Ahmed, while speaking to AFP. "We demand that the Swedish government and the Iraqi government stop this type of initiative," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are aware of the situation. Our embassy staff (in Iraq) are safe and the ministry is in regular contact with them," stated the ministry, in an email.</p>

<p>The torching of the embassy was condemned by Iraq's foreign ministry which directed the security forces to identify those responsible.</p>

Protesters torch Sweden's embassy in Baghdad ahead of planned burning of Quran

<p>In a tweet, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan condemned the act of burning the Quran and said that it was unacceptable to permit anti-Islam protests in the name of freedom of expression.</p>

<p>"It is unacceptable to allow these anti-Islamic actions under the pretext of freedom of expression. Turning a blind eye to such atrocious acts is to be complicit," Fidan wrote on Twitter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Stockholm police, in its written decision granting permission for the protest, said that the security risks related to the burning "were not of a nature that could justify, under current laws, a decision to reject the request".&nbsp;</p>

<p>37-year-old Salwan Momika, who had fled to Sweden from Iraq several years ago, had requested permission from the police to burn the Muslim holy book "to express my opinion about the Quran".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Before the protest, Momika told news agency TT that he wished to highlight the importance of freedom of speech. "This is democracy. It is in danger if they tell us we can't do this," Momika stated.</p>

<p>"I want to protest in front of the large mosque in Stockholm, and I want to express my opinion about the Quran... I will tear up the Quran and burn it," Momika had earlier stated.&nbsp;</p>

At least 230 firefighters were at the site&nbsp;and nine doctors, said the police officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, the incident happened on Rue Saint-Jacques in the fifth arrondissement, close to the Jardin Du Luxembourg and Sorbonne University and has asked people to stay away from the area and not hinder the massive deployment of firefighters and police.</p>

<p>Similarly, the police have also asked the locals to avoid the Val de Grace church area after the facade of a building collapsed and the fire is said to have spread to neighbouring buildings. The reported blast occurred at around 4:55 pm (local time).</p>

<p>Some two hours later at 6:45 pm (local time) the Paris police chief Laurent Nunez said that the fire is under control and rescue work was continuing. The prosecutors also said that two people were still unaccounted for after the blast and fire.&nbsp;</p>

<p>French media reports citing nearby residents also reported a loud explosion preceding the fire. Meanwhile, French prosecutors said the cause of the fire remains unknown. Notably, the site of the incident is at the edge of the Latin Quarter which is one of the most prominent tourist areas in Paris.</p>

<p>Paris police spokeswoman Loubna Atta said it was too early to determine the source of the fire and did not confirm reports about the gas explosion. This comes after local deputy mayor, Edouard Civel, said it was a gas explosion which caused the blast in a Twitter post. Additionally, witnesses also told the local media that had been a strong smell of gas moments before the blast.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I was at home writing…I thought it was a bomb,” an art historian, Monique Mosser told Reuters. Meanwhile, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau, as per media reports, said initial checks of camera footage suggested the explosion occurred within the building which was next to the Val de Grace church.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A fire broke out at a coaching centre in the&nbsp;capital city&nbsp;of India, Delhi, on Thursday. It was reported in the northwest&nbsp; Mukherjee Nagar area, media reports said quoting Delhi Fire Service officials. However, there have been no major injuries reported, the officials said.&nbsp;At about 12:27 pm on Thursday, a call was made to report the blaze. Director of Delhi Fire Service Atul Garg said as many as 11 fire tenders were deployed at the fire scene to contain the blaze.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Fire breaks out at a building near Batra Cinema in Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar. Several fire tenders are at the spot and the operation to rescue those inside the building is currently underway," PTI news agency said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The footage of the coaching institute in Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar is circulating&nbsp;on social media. As per reports, several students rappelled down the building. A rescue operation is currently underway.</p>

<p>According to officials, a fire broke out in a three-storey building that houses the Sanskriti IAS centre and various commercial offices. At least 22 students were injured in the incident, media reports said citing sources.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The fire started on the ground floor, where the main electricity board is located, and initial investigations suggest that it was caused by a short circuit. The smoke then spread to the upper floors of the building.</p>

<p>A student at the centre Said Aman who witnessed the blaze breaking out at the coaching centre said, “When I saw thick smoke billowing from the building, I and a few other students went inside the centre… we helped a few students get out by breaking window grills with a hammer and climbing down using ropes that a few of us had arranged from local shops.”</p>

<p>Another student Pawan claimed that he was able to rescue at least five students who were stuck in the blaze. He added, “We could not see anything due to the thick black smoke and had trouble breathing. However, before firefighters arrived, we somehow arranged ropes, water bottles and blankets so students could escape safely.”</p>

<p>Notably, the building, Satpura Bhawan, is home to various departments of the Madhya Pradesh government. The city's Municipal Corporation's Fire Officer Ramesh Neel said that the fire broke out at around 4:00 pm (local time) and fire tenders rushed to the spot.</p>

<p>The building in question is also located in front of the state government secretariat building Vallabh Bhawan. The cause of the fire remains unknown and an investigation into the incident is underway, said Neel. He added, “Furniture and documents are prima facie destroyed in the fire.”</p>

<p>Speaking about the incident, the in-charge of the local police station, RK Singh said, “A fire broke out on the third floor of Satpura Bhawan. No casualties were reported as the staff working there immediately rushed out of the office.”</p>

<p>He added, “15 fire tenders are present here at the spot to douse the fire. 50 per cent&nbsp;of the fire is under control. The reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained."</p>

<p>In line with the MP CM’s request, the Indian defence minister will reportedly send IAF’s AN 32 and Mi-15 aircraft later tonight to help douse the fire. Alsarheed, an eyewitness to the incident, as per Reuters said&nbsp;flames engulfed the boat’s tail in a “matter of minutes” and said that their&nbsp;yacht took 12 tourists on board along with the crew.&nbsp;Alsarheed was said to be on a water safari at the same time of the incident.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Three British tourists killed due to the fire</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>A spokesperson for Scuba Travel, the tour operator for the trip, confirmed the deaths and said “It is with great regret that we, as tour operator, with heavy hearts, must accept that three of our much-valued dive guests, perished in the tragic incident. Our sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to their families and friends at this very sad time.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The spokesperson also said that the three British tourists were among the 15 “qualified diving enthusiasts” and a part of the week-long stay on board the ship when the fire broke out at about 8:30 am (local time).&nbsp;</p>

<p>“At the time the fire broke out, 12 divers were participating in a briefing on board, while those missing had apparently decided not to dive that morning,” said the spokesperson, in a statement. It added, given the “severity of the fire” the 12 divers present at the briefing were immediately evacuated to another boat nearby.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Do we know what caused the fire?</strong></h2>

<p>According to the statement from the Red Sea State governor’s office the boat which had been on a trip since June 6 in an area just north of Marsa Alam caught on fire after an electrical short circuit. The boat in question was on a six-day cruise and due back Sunday when it caught on fire some 25 kilometres north of Marsa Alam.</p>

<h2><strong>Egypt’s Red Se</strong>a</h2>

<p>The Red Sea is said to be a major tourist destination in Egypt which contributes more than 10 per cent to the country’s GDP while the sector employs two million people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last week, a Russian tourist was killed off at one of Egypt’s Red Sea resorts after being attacked by a tiger shark in the waters near the city of Hurghada.</p>

<p>This incident prompted the closure of the 74 km stretch of the coastline with officials&nbsp;announcing it would remain off-limits until Sunday.&nbsp;Egypt’s environment ministry later said that they have caught the shark and are examining the reasons for this rare attack.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The statement was made by the governor of Russia's Krasnodar region, a day after Ukraine was accused by Russia of carrying out a drone attack in Moscow. The governor added that the drone had set the Afipsky oil refinery ablaze.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the Telegram messaging app, Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said that the officials soon extinguished the fire and there were no casualties.&nbsp;</p>

US: 7-year-old sets home on fire with parents sleeping inside, arrested

<p>More than 100 firefighters battled towering flames and dense smoke from a fire in a seven-storey building that was spreading to adjacent buildings in central Sydney on Thursday (May 25).</p>

<p>"The building is starting to collapse, while the inferno is beginning to spread to several neighbouring buildings, including residential apartments," Fire and Rescue NSW said in a statement, as reported by AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per&nbsp;the&nbsp;emergency services, more than 100 firemen with 20 fire trucks were "working to contain and extinguish the blaze" on Randle Street near the city's Central Station. At least one close vehicle has been destroyed by fire, they said.</p>

<p>Emergency services believe the building was vacant when the blaze started.</p>

<p>"All you could feel when standing here was heat on your face from the flames," one witness told public broadcaster ABC News.</p>

<p>"And when they started to move us back, a car just in front of the building caught fire."</p>

<p>A witness claimed to have seen pieces of the flaming structure fall onto the sidewalk. Commuters were also impacted by the fire, which shuttered roads and halted light rail services.</p>

<p>“It was essentially a candlestick,” a resident who lives about 100 metres from the blaze told Guardian Australia.</p>

<p>“It was basically apocalyptic, there was ash falling everywhere, the embers were raining down,” he added.</p>

<p>NSW Fire and Rescue’s deputy commissioner for field operations, Jeremy Fewtrell stated at a press conference on Thursday that there was no evidence of any injuries to members of the public and that no one was in the structure at the time of the fire.</p>

<p>One fireman suffered minor burns to his arm and is being treated by NSW EMS personnel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fewtrell said he'd seen similar-sized flames before, but what made this one stand out was how rapidly it spread and how many additional buildings were nearby.</p>

<p>“The risk of further fire spread is a real concern [and] our firefighters have worked very hard to stop that,” he said.</p>

<p>“There were some fires in there that spread into the apartment buildings, and firefighters were able to extinguish those, preventing them from penetrating further into the buildings and causing significant damage there,” he added.</p>

<h2><strong>Adjacent buildings at risk</strong></h2>

<p>As the building is situated close to residential buildings and backs into a small alley, the apartments, as well as adjoining offices and companies, were evacuated.</p>

<p>Students taking their final exams at Sydney Dental Hospital were evacuated at around 4.15pm (local time).</p>

<p>Fewtrell said that once the fire is put out, an investigation will be carried out.</p>
