England batter Joe Root picks THESE two players to top runs and wickets charts at ODI World Cup

In a big blow to New Zealand's squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, veteran fast bowler Tim Southee has suffered a thumb injury, putting his participation in the quadrennial tournament in doubt. Southee suffered the injury during the last ODI of four-match series against England on September 16 at Lord's.

Southee was fielding at first slip when he suffered the blow to thumb while trying to take a catch to dismiss Joe Root. He immediately let his discomfort known and was escorted off the field with a medical team member. He didn't take any further part in the game and Trent Boult replaced him as a substitute fielder in the match.

The pacer will now head home after initial scans showed that he fractured and dislocated a bone in his right thumb. Speaking about the injury, New Zealand skipper Tom Latham said that more will be revealed about the extent of Southee's injury in coming days.

"It's not ideal for Timmy," Latham said. "He's a massive leader amongst the group and obviously he'll be assessed over the coming days when we get back home to see how bad it is, but we do have a bit of time leading into those first couple of games, so we'll know more over the next couple of days."

"He's a pretty resilient character, so I'm sure he'll be doing all he can to be on the plane, ready for that first game. But it's hard to know at this point what the timeframe will be. Once he gets home and has a few more scans, we'll know the extent of what's going on."

The Kiwis, meanwhile, lost the game by 100 runs and conceded the series 3-1 to England. They next play Bangladesh in a three-ODI series starting from September 21 before facing England in World Cup opener on October 5 in Ahmedabad.
Tim Southee's ODI World Cup participation under doubt after suffering injury in Lord's ODI against England

On Wednesday (September 13), Ben Stokes slammed a career-best 182 in England's third and penultimate ODI versus New Zealand at The Oval, London. Riding on his daddy hundred, Jos Buttler & Co. took an unassailable lead in the four ODIs, with an 181-run win, as they prepare for the upcoming ODI World Cup, to kick off in India on October 05.

On August 16, Stokes came out of his 50-over retirement ahead of defending champions England's ODI WC opener, where they play New Zealand in the inaugural game in Ahmedabad. In July 2022, the current England Test captain had called it quits from the shorter format blaming an "unsustainable" cricketing schedule. However, he made a U-turn as England look desperate to defend their title. After his knock versus the Black Caps, which is the highest individual score in ODIs by an English batter, Stokes revealed that he knew he would be coming back for the 50-over World Cup.

"Obviously I've been asked a lot about my knee over a long period of time, so I just said that to leave it," Stokes said, post the third ODI versus the Kiwis, in relation to his comments at the conclusion of Ashes 2023. He added, "I knew that I'd be playing in these games and potentially in the World Cup then when I said that, but it was just the easiest thing to say that and put you (the media) off the radar."

Knew I would be playing World Cup: England's Ben Stokes on coming out of ODI retirement after 182 vs NZ

England's Test skipper Ben Stokes, who recently made a return to the 50-over squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, scored 182 to set up the new highest individual score for his team in ODIs. Stokes scorched the New Zealand bowling attack in the third ODI of the ongoing ODI series for his record-breaking innings. Stokes' innings, which included 15 fours and nine sixes, came in 124 balls.

Before Stokes, Jason Roy held the record of the highest individual score for England in ODIs with his 180 against Australia in 2018. The innings from Stokes comes at the right moment for England as they look to defend their crown in the ODI World Cup which starts next month on October 5 in India.

Notably, Stokes was also the one who had orchestrated England's maiden World Cup victory in the final against New Zealand in 2019 under dramatic circumstances. With the innings, the Englishman also justified his inclusion in the ODI set-up right away. Stokes's inclusion in the side made a few heads turn as it potentially costed England's up-and-rising star Harry Brook his place in England's World Cup squad.

As for the match, the four-ODI series stood equal at 1-1 going into the third ODI on September 13. Stokes came out to bat in the third over at number four with England two down for 13 in 2.4 overs. The southpaw then added 199 runs for the third wicket with Dawid Malan (96).

Stokes then added 77 runs with his skipper Jos Buttler (38) before New Zealand pulled things back a bit. Stokes was the sixth English wicket to fall but not before he propelled his side to 348 in 44.3 overs. England, who looked set for 400 when Stokes was batting, couldn't capitalize on the platform once he departed and got all-out for 368 runs in 48.1 overs.

Ben Stokes records highest individual score for England in ODIs with sensational ton against New Zealand

Mitchell Santner starred with the ball before Tim Seifert led the way with the bat as New Zealand beat England by six wickets at Trent Bridge on Tuesday to end a four-match Twenty20 series all square at 2-2.

When Jonny Bairstow was making a quickfire 73, to give the Black Caps a reminder of his stunning Test century against them in Nottingham last year, T20 world champions England were on course for a huge total.

But, with England white-ball captain Jos Buttler officially rested from the game, New Zealand took four wickets for 35 runs -- with left-arm spinner Santner returning fine figures of 3-30.

The first two matches of the T20 series witnessed two dominant England wins, by seven wickets and 95 runs, before New Zealand hit back with an equally emphatic 74-run success at Edgbaston on Sunday.

'Aggressive options'

"We were far from our best in the first two games and the last two have been closer to what this side is about," New Zealand captain Tim Southee said at the presentation ceremony.

"They (England) got off to a great start tonight but we knew that if we kept taking wickets it was the best way to slow them down. We were trying to be smart and make them take aggressive options."

He added: "They had a brilliant start with the bat too and then we couldn't wrestle it back."

England were 105-1 off 11 overs after Moeen won the toss.

But Santner led New Zealand's fightback in the field with a haul that included the prize scalp of Bairstow in an innings where the next highest score was the 26 made by both Dawid Malan and Liam Livingstone.

Bairstow dominated the powerplay with three legside sixes, pacemen Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson the bowlers to suffer.

But his assault ended when he failed to clear long-on after lofting Santner down the ground.

Ish Sodhi, another of New Zealand's spinners, induced ring star Harry Brook -- left out of England's provisional World Cup squad -- to hole out for four before Santner removed both Malan and Moeen in the 16th over.

Bairstow suffered a shoulder injury while batting with the result that regular white-ball keeper Buttler was drafted in as emergency cover behind the stumps.

Seifert hammered Brydon Carse and Luke Wood for sixes before leaping teenage leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed had him caught and bowled in a return of 2-27 on his return to the team.

New Zealand overcome Bairstow masterclass to level series with win in 4th T20I

England's one of the most talented young batsmen Harry Brook opened up about being snubbed from the defending champions' provisional world cup 2023 squad. The batsman, who was dropped after England Test skipper Ben Stokes reversed his ODI retirement, called his snubbing 'disappointing.'

“Obviously it’s disappointing but I can’t do anything about it now,” Brook said after the match between London Spirit vs Northern Superchargers during The Hundred. “You’ve just got to move on. I’m trying not to think about it anymore.”

“I’ve not had much conversation with Matthew [Mott] or Jos [Buttler]. They said with Stokesy coming back I was probably going to miss out this time. He is one of the best players to ever play cricket, so I can’t really complain, can I?,” Brook added.

While Brook has played only three ODIs so far in his career, he is regarded as one of the best up and coming batsmen in England. The youngster also acknowledged the same and said that even though he has played a lot of T20 cricket, he remains inexperienced in terms of ODIs.

I’m trying not to think about it anymore.” “I’ve not had much conversation with Matthew [Mott] or Jos [Buttler]. They said with Stokesy coming back I was probably going to miss out this time. He is one of the best players to ever play cricket, so I can’t really complain, can I?,” Brook added. 'Disappointing,' says England batter Harry Brook after being snubbed from provisional ODI World Cup squad

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to move the date of England vs Pakistan ICC ODI World Cup game from November 12 to 11. The game is scheduled to be held in Kolkata's iconic Eden Gardens.

The request was made to Jay Shah, BCCI Secretary, after city police met CAB officials. The CAB officials were informed about potential security situation on the match day in the meeting. The original date, November 12, clashes with Kalipujo — one of the city and region's marquee festivals.

Earlier, Ahmedabad police had also requested for a date change for high-voltage India-Pakistan clash.
While the date change for India vs Pakistan game has been done and it will now be played on October 14, pending an official statement in schedule change from BCCI and ICC, there's no update as of now on CAB's request.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), meanwhile, has also agreed to the changes in Pakistan's schedule in the forthcoming ODI World Cup 2023, in India.

The first semi-final will be played in Mumbai on November 15 and the Final will take place in Ahmedabad on November 19.

ODI World Cup: Bengal cricket body requests BCCI to reschedule England-Pakistan game over security concerns

England all-rounder Moeen Ali is done with Test cricket. Again. The all-rounder, who had come out of retirement to play in the Ashes after being asked by skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, says, "If Stokesy messages me again, I'm going to delete it."

Interestingly, Ali's return to Test cricket started with Stokes texting him: 'Ashes?' after England's first-choice spinner Jack Leach suffered an injury prior to the series. With the series over at 2-2, Ali told McCullum, who asked him if he'd consider playing in India in early 2024: "That's me done."

"They knew from the start," Moeen said, laughing. "Especially when those India venues came out! Baz (McCullum) asked me again when I had my day off on the second day (in final Test). I said no. I'm not going [to India]. There's no way I'm going. That's me done. It's nice to finish like this and be part of an amazing day."

England all-rounder Moeen Ali offers update on extending Test career post Ashes

England and Australia have been docked points in double digits for slow over rates during the recently-concluded Ashes 2023. While the five-Test series ended in a 2-2 stalemate, the fines were not so equal, with England being docked 19 points and Australia getting away with 10 docked points.

After adjusting the points, England managed to get just nine points in the Test series while Australia managed 18 in the World Test Championship cycle. Each series in the WTC offers a maximum of 60 points which means both England and Australia managed 24 each for the two games won by each of them.

The drawn Test in Manchester saw England and Australia both getting four points each, taking both sides to 28 each before the fines came in. As per the rules of the International Cricket Council (ICC), one point gets docked from the total points for each over bowled less in the stipulated time by the teams.

After the series, England were found short of a combined 19 overs in four Tests out of five. The home side were two overs short in the first Test, nine in the second, three in the drawn fourth test and five in the last one at the Oval. Overall, England were 19 overs short in the series and hence docked 19 points.

As for Australia, the visitors were found short for all of their 10 overs during the rain-marred Old Trafford Test and hence a 10-point deduction.

Apart from WTC points, the teams are also fined their match fee, which is five per cent for each over short. By the calculations, England were fined 10, 45, 15 and 25 per cent for each of the Test they were found short of overs in. Australia, on the other side, were fined 50 per cent of their match fee for the last only.

After taking the docked points into account, Australia currently stand in third position on the WTC points list (percentage-wise) behind Pakistan at first and India at second. England, however, are in fifth place.

Ashes 2023: England, Australia docked points in double digits for slow over rate

Fast bowler Stuart Broad played for the last time for England during the final Ashes Test against Australia at Oval, London on Monday, July 31. The pacer, who managed to take 604 wickets in his 166-Test long career, ended on a high note as he took the final wicket to take England home.

It was a fitting farewell for Broad, who ended his swansong with a peach of a delivery to dismiss Australia's Alex Carey as England equaled the Ashes 2-2 with a 49-run win.

The ball, bowled round the wicket, was pitched outside off on a good length, prompting Carey to come forward to defend. The ball, however, moved enough to take the edge off Carey's bat and Jonny Bairstow did the rest behind the stumps. Have a look at the wicket here:

England great Stuart Broad's swansong ends on a high note with PEACH to dismiss Alex Carey - WATCH

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting blasted the Aussie bowlers for not being able to capitalise with the new ball and letting England put pressure on them. Ponting's comment came at lunch on day 3 after England's opening batsmen made small work of the 12-run deficit.

"Australia have been a bit all over the place, to be honest. I think what it has highlighted throughout the series is when you've got the new ball in hand, you'd better be ready to start and bowl your best delivery. If you don't - as we saw today - there is a boundary off the first ball, then 13 off the first over and the pressure is suddenly on the bowlers. That's what England are trying to do and create. Australia haven't been ready," Ponting said.

England opener Zak Crawley in particular was severe on visiting bowlers as he hit another fifty in the series. During the commentary, former England skipper Nasser Hussain also took a cheeky dig at Ponting, saying the latter is about to just explode.

“I think Ricky Ponting is just about to explode,” Hussain laughed. “Everyone in world cricket knows where to bowl to Zak Crawley … you bowl fifth stump, back of a length. They bowled on his pads, they bowled both sides of the wicket. They got it wrong and now they’re playing catch-up cricket. You can have as many theories as you want, but you’ve got to bowl better,” added Hussain.

England, after bowling Australia out for 295 in the first innings, raced away to 389/9 in their second innings, thanks to fifties from Crawley (73), Joe Root (91) and Jonny Bairstow (78). Apart from them, Crawley's opening partner Ben Duckett and skipper Ben Stokes also scored 42 each as the home team scored runs at about five per over.

Australia, who currently lead five-Test series 2-1 and are looking to win their first Ashes in England in two decades, will have to bat out of their skin to win the Test and series over the last two days of the match.

Australia haven't been ready," Ponting said. Also Read: 'Running out of time,' says coach Rahul Dravid after India's loss against West Indies in second ODI England opener Zak Crawley in particular was severe on visiting bowlers as he hit another fifty in the series. Ashes 2023: Former skipper Ricky Ponting blasts Australian bowlers for 'not being ready' with new ball

England and Australia produced a humdinger of a Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham before Pat Cummins & Co. edged past the hosts by two wickets on the final day, on Tuesday (June 20), of the Ashes 2023 opener. Opting to bat first, England rode on Joe Root's unbeaten 118 to declare their first innings at 393 for 8. In reply, Australia posted 386 all-out courtesy of Usman Khawaja's 141 before England set up a challenging 282-run target. The final day's play saw a delayed start before the game went down to the wire but Khawaja (65), Cummins (44 not out) and Nathan Lyon (16 not out) took the Aussies home.

While England's Bazball approach entertained one and all throughout the contest and kept viewers at the edge of their seat, English captain Ben Stokes' first-innings declaration became a talking point after they went down by two wickets on Tuesday evening.

'Not going to be looking back on this game as 'what ifs'

Stokes backed his declaration call decision on the opening day, made when a well-set Root was batting on 118 along with two wickets in hand. He said after the game, "If we were in the same position? Yeah. I would like to be 398 for 6 [sic] with 20 minutes left. That would be great."

"I could also turn it around and say, 'if we didn't declare, would we have got the excitement that we did at the end of day five?' I'm not a hundred per cent sure, but I'm not going to be looking back on this game as 'what ifs'... the reality is, we just didn't manage to get over the line," Stokes further added.

'Not going to...': Ben Stokes backs declaration call after England lose Edgbaston Test to Australia

The Bazall philosophy continued to enthrall fans in Edgbaston as Joe Root pulled off an aggressive start to England’s batting on the fourth day of the opening Ashes Test. After losing both openers in the first ten overs of their second innings, England were on the back foot when heavy showers forced the end of proceedings on Day 3. The early setback, however, seemingly had very little impact on Root. The English batter began Day 4 with an attempted reverse scoop off Australian pacer Scott Boland. He, however, failed to make contact as the ball found the clasp of England keeper Alex Carrey behind the stumps, going past the edge of Root’s bat. Underlining Root’s stunning approach, England Cricket tweeted, “First ball and Joe Root goes for the ramp shot.”

Ashes 2023: Joe Root goes for a ‘ramp shot’ on opening delivery of Day 4; fans in ‘awe’

The Edgbaston pitch was the central point of discussions after more than 400 runs were scored on the opening day of the first match of the Ashes.
Winning the toss, English skipper Ben Stokes decided to bat first. Joe Root showcased a tremendous batting to bring up his 30th Test century yesterday. With this, the former England captain succeeded in ending his eight-year wait for an Ashes ton. England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow pulled off a crucial knock of 78 in as many deliveries. Root remained unbeaten on 115 when England declared their first innings at 393/8. At Stumps, Australia were at 14/0. The hosts will be eager to win the Ashes series for the first time since 2015. In the last Ashes, the Aussies had hammered England 4-0.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has been cleared of using racist language towards ex-Yorkshire team mate Azeem Rafiq in verdicts released by the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) panel on Friday. The panel said it found the charge against Vaughan was not proved, after the case against him and five other former Yorkshire players was heard in London earlier this month.

Yorkshire and a number of individuals were charged by the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) last year after an investigation into racism allegations made by Rafiq, who said in 2021 that he had been a victim of institutional racism at the club. Rafiq, a player of Pakistani descent who has said English cricket is institutionally racist, alleged that Vaughan told him and other players of Asian origin that there were "too many of you lot, we need to do something about it" before a match in 2009. Vaughan strongly denied the allegation.

The CDC said its panel "was not satisfied on the balance of probabilities" that Vaughan said the words "at the time and in the specific circumstances alleged".

The panel added its findings "do not in any way undermine the wider assertions" made by Rafiq. Vaughan, who played for Yorkshire between 1993 and 2009, was one of seven individuals charged by the ECB with using racist or discriminatory language. He was the only defendant who participated in the CDC hearing.

Dawid Malan scored a hundred under pressure to guide England to a thrilling three-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first one-day international in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Malan hit an unbeaten 114 off 145 balls as England reached their target with eight balls to spare after the hosts had them reeling with Jos Buttler, Jason Roy and James Vince all out cheaply.

Earlier England bowled out Bangladesh for 209 with Moeen Ali, Mark Wood, Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid each claiming two wickets and Najmul Hossain scoring 58, his maiden ODI half-century.

The hosts made a decent start after electing to bat first, with skipper Tamim Iqbal making 23. But after Chris Woakes earned the first breakthrough with the wicket of Liton Das, England struck whenever a partnership was developing.

Tamim was bowled by Wood before spinners were called into action, as England got valuable South Asian practice ahead of their defence of the ODI World Cup crown in India later this year.

Moeen bowled Shakib Al Hasan for eight before Rashid picked up the wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim.

Najmul and Mahmudullah Riyad (31) forged a 53-run partnership for the fifth wicket before they fell in successive overs.

Debutant Will Jacks claimed the wicket of Afif Hossain three overs later to kill off Bangladesh's remaining chance of putting up a big total.

England made a poor start with the bat, with Taijul Islam picking up 3-54 and complemented brilliantly by other bowlers as Bangladesh made a match out of low scores.

With help from Shakib, Mehidy Miraz and Taskin Ahmed, the visitors were reduced to 103-5 halfway through the innings with Roy, Buttler and Vince all out for single-digit scores.

Jacks made a valiant 26 and then Moeen provided Malan with some support in a vital 38-run sixth wicket stand before Mehidy dismissed him for 14.

However Malan, who along with Moeen participated in the recent Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 tournament, hung on to keep England in the hunt.

Tamim took a fine diving catch at mid-on to dismiss Woakes off Taijul for seven to give the game some tension with England still needing 49.

But Malan, who came to the crease in the second over after Shakib dismissed Roy for four, guided tail-ender Rashid (17 not out) to complete the win.

Player of the match Malan earlier brought his fourth hundred in ODIs with a boundary off Taskin. He struck eight fours and four sixes overall.

"(I) spent a fair bit of time in Bangladesh, especially at this ground. Told Jos it would have been tough to chase if they'd have got 30-40 more," Malan said afterwards.

"Satisfying to get over the line, handling pressure is part of the job."

"These are tough conditions. Malan's innings is an example for us on how to play on these wickets," Buttler said.

"There's plenty of areas to work and improve. It's about small partnerships on wickets like these."

Tamim said his side "should have scored at least 30-35 more".

"Have to give it to Malan," he conceded. "We tried everything in our bowling option."

Also Read: Ind vs Aus: R Ashwin overtakes James Anderson to become No. 1 ranked bowler during Day 1 of Indore Test The hosts made a decent start after electing to bat first, with skipper Tamim Iqbal making 23. "Satisfying to get over the line, handling pressure is part of the job." "These are tough conditions. Malan's innings is an example for us on how to play on these wickets," Buttler said. "There's plenty of areas to work and improve. It's about small partnerships on wickets like these." Tamim said his side "should have scored at least 30-35 more". "Have to give it to Malan," he conceded. "We tried everything in our bowling option." WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
Former England captain and all-rounder Andrew Flintoff met with a serious accident on Tuesday (December 13) in the United Kingdom while filming 'Top Gear', a BBC show that the 45-year-old has been presenting since 2019. The cricketer-turned-broadcaster was filming for the show at Dunsfold Aerodrome, in Surrey, when the mishap happened. As a result, he was soon provided medical assistance and airlifted to a nearby hospital.

According to a report by The Sun, Flintoff's injuries suffered are not life-threatening. “Freddie is in hospital after a crash on Top Gear. He was driving on the track as normal. He wasn’t going at high speeds - it was just an accident that could happen to anyone. All the usual health and safety measures were in place for filming too. Freddie was taken to the hospital by air ambulance shortly afterwards. His injuries are not life-threatening and he is receiving treatment. Filming has been postponed for now and all anyone cares about is Freddie recovering," a source was quoted as saying to The Sun.

England created history on the opening day of the Rawalpindi Test versus hosts Babar Azam-led Pakistan. After opting to bat first, on a flat surface, Ben Stokes-led Three Lions didn't do anything wrong on Day 1 to go to stumps at 506 for 4. Thus, England has created a world record for scoring the most runs by a team on Day 1 of a Test. In 1910, Australia had ended the Sydney Test's opening day's play at 494-6 versus South Africa. Thus, their arch-rivals in England have surpassed them to break the record after 112 long years.

Coming out to bat, openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett made merry of the batting conditions versus the Shaheen Afridi-less bowling attack. England reached 174 for no loss at the lunch break, moving past India's 158/0 (27 overs) to have the most runs by a team in the first session. Crawley scored a 111-ball 122, Duckett departed for a well-made 107 whereas keeper-batter Ollie Pope scored a hundred (108) before Harry Brooks remained unbeaten on 101. Captain Stokes also joined the party and remains unbeaten on a 15-ball 34, laced with 6 fours and a six, as the visitors piled on the miseries versus Pakistan. Thus, England became the first-ever side to hit 500 runs on the opening day of a Test match.

The day saw as many as 73 fours and three sixes being scored by the English batters as Pakistani bowlers had no answers to their onslaught. While England's bazball approach has been hailed by many on social media platforms, many also slammed the dead wicket at Rawalpindi with bowlers having no say throughout the day.

Day Two will bring in a new challenge for Pakistan as they have a herculean task to stop England from running away from the game. Anything over 650 looks certain as of now unless a collapse takes place. In reply, Pakistani batters will have to bat very well and come close to England's first-innings score if they wish to stay alive in the game.

Rawalpindi Test: England create history! Ben Stokes & Co. become first team to hit most runs on Day 1

Harmanpreet Kaur-led India infliced a 3-0 whitewash over hosts England by winning the third and final ODI by 16 runs at Lord's on September 24 (Saturday). In a low-scoring thriller, India were dismissed for a paltry 169 in 45.4 overs after being asked to bat first. In reply, the Indian bowlers stood tall and reduced England to 118-9 before Charlie Dean-Freya Davies' last-wicket stand kept England alive in the run-chase.

In the 44th over of the run-chase, all-rounder Deepti Sharma dismissed Charlie by running her out as the English batter kept leaving her crease at the non-striker's end at regular intervals during her knock. Seeing the batter taking advantage by leaving the crease beforehand, Deepti pulled off a run-out to take India to a 16-run win in Jhulan Goswami's farewell game.

While the run-out is clearly within the laws of the game, the dismissal sparked a huge debate online. On her return to India, Deepti told reporters that Harman & Co. had warned Charlie for leaving the crease before they pulled off a run-out. Now, Charlie Dean (who was dismissed for 35) has finally reacted to her dismissal.

In a post on Instagram, Charlie hinted at accepting her fault. Posting a number of pictures from the iconic game at Lord's , she captioned, "An interesting end to the summer. What an honour it is to play at lords in England colours. I guess I’ll just stay in my crease from now on."

Ben Stokes remains a vital cog for England in Tests and T20Is, after retiring from ODI cricket last month. Stokes, the English Test team, often remains in the headlines and had made heads turn for all the wrong reasons in late 2017 when he was involved in a Bristol nightclub brawl.

The incident took place just before the then Joe Root-led England's Ashes 2017 versus Australia Down Under. The 31-year-old Stokes was back then alleged of knocking down a person unconscious outside a nightclub in Bristol. This led to the star cricketer being banned for eight matches and he even missed a Test match in the following year, versus Virat Kohli's India, to attend a trial of his case.

Later, the Bristol Crown Court found him not guilty and, hence, Stokes resumed his services for England cricket team and was even adjudged the Player-of-the-Match in Eoin Morgan & Co.'s famous 2019 ODI World Cup final win over New Zealand, at Lord's. Thus, he redeemed himself successfully and has moved on from the infamous incident. Nonetheless, Stokes recalled the incident once again and shared the impact it has had on his family.

'We don't want our kids...' - England Test captain Ben Stokes recalls Bristol nightclub brawl

Ben Stokes stunned the cricketing fraternity with his sudden retirement from ODI cricket last month. At 31, Stokes remains one of the fittest cricketers in the modern-era and a vital cog for England across formats. Hence, his retirement from the 50-over format raised a lot of eyebrows as many questioned the relevance of the shorter format and slammed the rigorous international schedule.

Ahead of the launch of his documentary 'Ben Stokes: Phoenix from the Ashes', all-rounder Stokes opened up on his ODI retirement decision and came hard at the international scheduling by calling it 'ridiculous'. Speaking to the Mirror, the England Test captain said, "The schedule is so jam-packed. In my opinion it is just wrong that in the top level of sport you are looking so far ahead as to when you can stop. I know I can’t play all this cricket, it is a joke. The fact that series’ are overlapping is ridiculous. To have a Test series and one day series going on at the same time is just mind blowing to me."

“In the latest white ball series they had no time to train. That in itself is just wow. That should be an eye opener to people," he added.

'It is a joke' - Ben Stokes comes hard at rigorous international schedule after ODI retirement

Ben Stokes was the difference between England and New Zealand in the 2019 ODI World Cup final, at Lord's. After 100 overs were completed, there was nothing separating both sides before a Super Over was held. Even the Super Over saw both teams ending with identical scores before Stokes-starrer England won in terms of boundary count.

Stokes' 84 not out ensured England ended at 241 all-out, in pursuit of 242, and even the Super Over saw both teams ending at 15 runs apiece. The all-rounder also chipped in with eight vital runs in the Super Over. Nonetheless, Ross Taylor -- former Kiwi great -- has revealed an interesting tale that Stokes -- whose father is a Kiwi -- could've played for NZ had it not been due to New Zealand Cricket (NZC) board's unfortunate decision taken some years back.

ALSO READ | 'He was laughing'- Former Rajasthan Royals star Ross Taylor shockingly reveals he was slapped by owner

"He was 18 or 19 and very much a Kiwi,’’ Taylor wrote in his autobiography. "Over a Guinness, I asked him if he wanted to come and play in New Zealand. He was keen so I sent a message to New Zealand Cricket CEO Justin Vaughan saying this guy Stokes was a really good young cricketer and interested in playing for New Zealand."

"Vaughan replied along the lines that he could start playing domestic cricket and we’d see where it went. I went back, saying we’d have to offer him more than that because he wouldn’t be interested if it meant starting on the bottom rung of the ladder. Obviously, it didn’t come to anything," he added.

Taylor further wrote: "Ben was sincere about playing for New Zealand, but NZC would’ve had to have acted swiftly and decisively and given him some pretty solid assurances, which Vaughan clearly wasn’t prepared to do.’’

Thus, had NZC provided Stokes more stability, the current England Test captain would have been playing for New Zealand in today's times. For the unversed, he was born in NZ on June 4, 1991, and is now hailed as one of the finest all-rounders in the modern era.

ALSO READ | 'He was laughing'- Former Rajasthan Royals star Ross Taylor shockingly reveals he was slapped by owner "He was 18 or 19 and very much a Kiwi,’’ Taylor wrote in his autobiography. "Over a Guinness, I asked him if he wanted to come and play in New Zealand. He was keen so I sent a message to New Zealand Cricket CEO Justin Vaughan saying this guy Stokes was a really good young cricketer and interested in playing for New Zealand." "Vaughan replied along the lines that he could start playing domestic cricket and we’d see where it went. I went back, saying we’d have to offer him more than that because he wouldn’t be interested if it meant starting on the bottom rung of the ladder. Obviously, it didn’t come to anything," he added. Taylor further wrote: "Ben was sincere about playing for New Zealand, but NZC would’ve had to have acted swiftly and decisively and given him some pretty solid assurances, which Vaughan clearly wasn’t prepared to do.’’ Thus, had NZC provided Stokes more stability, the current England Test captain would have been playing for New Zealand in today's times. For the unversed, he was born in NZ on June 4, 1991, and is now hailed as one of the finest all-rounders in the modern era.

'He was keen': Ross Taylor reveals Ben Stokes was eager to play for NZ, shares interesting tale

On Monday (July 17), Ben Stokes left the cricketing fraternity shellshocked when he announced that he will step aside from ODI cricket post the England-South Africa three-match 50-over series opener in Durham on July 18 (Tuesday).

At 31, Stokes is one of the fittest athletes in world cricket. The all-rounder has already won an ODI World Cup medal, in 2019, has over 5,000 runs in Tests and was also part of Eoin Morgan-led England's 2016 T20 World Cup campaign, where Stokes' 19-run final over in the summit clash conceded the trophy to West Indies. The English star cricketer is easily one of the ambassadors of the game and an integral part of his national side across formats. Then, what led to the recently-appointed Test captain retiring from ODIs?

Stokes recently opened up on his ODI retirement and told BBC's Test Match Special, "The more cricket that is played, the better for the sport, but you want a product that is of the highest quality. You want the best players to be playing as much as you possibly can, all the time."

"It isn't just me or us, you see it all around the world now where teams are having to rest some players in a certain series so they feel like they are getting a break. We are not cars, you can't just fill us up and we'll go out there and be ready to be fuelled up again."

In his column for The Daily Mail, former England captain-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain also pointed out, "Every time he [Stokes] goes onto that field, he wants to be 100% committed, not 80% - and that is what makes him the player he is."

"Some might suggest 80% of Stokes is enough but the problem is that once you play at 80%, it can lead lead to a drop in performance in another format. Just look at what has happened to Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson, for example. He doesn't want to become stale. Or go through the motions. He couldn't do that," he mentioned.

"Yes, his decision was something of a shout to the administrators because at the age of 31 someone like him shouldn't have to retire from a certain format," added the former right-handed batsman.

Thus, Stokes' retirement leads to a burning question: is there too much cricket being played nowadays? Well, the answer to this is a straightforward YES. For the unversed, England have so far already played four Tests (three versus New Zealand, one against India), seven ODIs (three each versus Netherlands, India and one versus SA, with two more on cards) and three T20Is (with an equal number of them to follow suit versus the Proteas) in ongoing 2022 home summer.

The emergence of franchise cricket has surely been a huge boon for the game, tapping into new territories, seeing the emergence of new star players worldwide, and expanding the overall market. However, for any franchise cricket to be a hit, it needs a starry presence and, hence, many top players' participation is ultimately adding to their workload.

With so much at stake in every level, it is the players who are being used as puppets -- being asked to move around and dance to the tunes of rigorous schedules across formats.
Thus, it won't be surprising that Stokes might go onto be the first of many all-format players who will retire from a particular format to prolong their respective careers. The all-rounder has surprised only those who are oblivious to the extensively gruelling demands of the modern-day game. His decision isn't really a shocker. It might just be the start of an unwanted trend.
