England skipper Jos Buttler, in an apparent dig at India's schedule at the Champions Trophy, called the ICC tournament 'unique.' India are playing their matches in Dubai, UAE while the rest of the teams are playing their matches across three venues in Pakistan.
The arrangement was made after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send India to Pakistan due to political tensions between the two countries. The decision (to choose Dubai as India's venue), however, was taken with the consent of all participating countries.&nbsp;

"I think it's a unique tournament already, isn't it, with being hosted here with one team playing in a different place but that's not something I'm sort of worried too much about at the moment. I've got all my focus on preparing well tonight and our game tomorrow,&rdquo; said Buttler during the pre-match press conference ahead of the Afghanistan game on Wednesday (Feb 26).
<h2>England in must-win territory</h2>
England and Afghanistan match result, barring a washout, will send the losing team out of semis contention. If England win the match against Afghanistan and against South Africa afterwards, they'll be through to the semis. In that case, South Africa would have to hope for Australia to lose against Afghanistan by a huge margin, else Australia will be through to the semis.
In case Afghanistan win the match against England, that will send the Jos Buttler-led side home packing and South Africa almost into the semis. Australia, on the other hand, would have to win their game against Afghanistan, else they'd be hoping for England to beat South Africa and then fight over net run rate for a place in the semis.
After the washout of the game between Australia and South Africa, all four teams in Group B remain in contention of making it to the semis. The top two teams will advance to the next round, with India and New Zealand already through from Group A.
Currently, South Africa and Australia are at three points each after two games and have one game each left. England and Afghanistan, on the other hand, have played one game each and face each other on Wednesday (Feb 26).

Champions Trophy: 'One team playing in a different place', says England skipper Buttler in sly dig at India's schedule

The England Cricket Board (ECB) has shared the update on playing against Afghanistan in the upcoming ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy-2025">Champions Trophy 2025</a> amid calls for a boycott. ECB chair Richard Thompson, in a statement, confirmed that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/england-cricket">England</a> will play the fixture against Afghanistan scheduled for February 26 in Lahore (Pakistan).
&ldquo;The Board recognises there are different views and opinions on the issue of boycotting the match and has listened carefully. We have been in close contact with the Government, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/icc">International Cricket Council</a> (ICC), our England Men&rsquo;s players and other stakeholders to discuss this matter, as well as considering how best the ECB can support those women cricketers who have fled Afghanistan.

&ldquo;Following this, we remain of the view that a co-ordinated international response by the cricketing community is the appropriate way forward, and will achieve more than any unilateral action by the ECB in boycotting this match, while we have also heard that for many ordinary Afghans, watching their cricket team is one of the few remaining sources of enjoyment. As such, we can confirm that we will play this fixture," the statement read.
<h2>What's happening in Afghanistan?</h2>
Ever since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2021 after the foreign troops departed, there's been a considerable change in policies, especially around women's rights. Under the Taliban rule, women are not allowed to participate in sports, among other things.
Afghanistan women's cricket team members fled the country in August 2021 when the Taliban took over and have been fighting for their rights ever since. The ECB called the discrimination against women in Afghanistan a 'gender apartheid.'
"What is happening in Afghanistan is nothing short of gender apartheid. At a cricketing level, when women&rsquo;s and girls&rsquo; cricket is growing rapidly around the world it is heartbreaking that those growing up in Afghanistan are denied this opportunity, but the appalling oppression of women and girls by the Taliban goes so much further," the ECB release read. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Former West Indies skipper Jason Holder has thanked the England cricket team for help in the survival of cricket in the Caribbean. This comes as England get ready for an eight-game white-ball tour in&nbsp;the West Indies comprising three ODIs and five T20Is.&nbsp;

It is to be noted that England have travelled each year to the West Indies since 2022 after West Indies helped the European cricket powerhouse during the peak of COVID-19 in 2020 by playing a Test series behind closed doors. Holder had led West Indies in the series and called for reciprocation in future.

"I think it's a fair way of putting it," Holder said to cricket news website ESPNcricinfo when asked if England have returned the favour.&nbsp;

"We've obviously had the English coming over for the last three years consecutively. And that has definitely boosted, not only our economy within the Caribbean, but it adds a massive boost to our survival in international cricket.

"We rely heavily on series between England and India, our revenues tend to come from those two teams. It's our biggest series within any calendar year, and, yeah, it's one that really brings the fans down to the Caribbean and creates a really fun atmosphere.

"So, it's great to have them and to see the fans packing the stadiums as well. There's always a good banter between the West Indian public and English public. So we're thankful that we've been able to have them so many times in as many years. And long may it continue," added the former West Indies skipper.

West Indies have been pretty dominant at home against England, winning five-T20I series 3-2 both in 2022 and 2023 as well as an ODI series in December last year too.

The upcoming tour kicks off on October 31 with the ODI series before the T20Is take place from November 10.

Captain Ben Stokes admitted that Noman Ali and Sajid Khan were too good for his England team after the spin duo propelled Pakistan to a series victory on Saturday.

The hosts sealed a nine-wicket win in the third Test in Rawalpindi with Noman taking 6-42 and Sajid 4-69 in the second innings as England were bowled out for just 112.

The irrepressible pair shared 39 wickets in the last two Tests to spur Pakistan's revival from an innings defeat in the first match. &nbsp;

"You've got to hold your hands up to say that those two in particular were obviously too good for our batting line-up in those last two games," Stokes said.

Noman and Sajid both came into the side following Pakistan's heavy defeat in the first Test in Multan, their inclusion proving pivotal in the hosts' 2-1 series triumph.

"Credit to Noman and Sajid, the way in which they bowled in the second Test match and in this game, you know it was very good and challenging," said Stokes.

Stokes said the series defeat was all the more disappointing with England having whitewashed Pakistan 3-0 away two years ago.

"Losing games for England hurts so it's disappointing," said Stokes, who missed the first Test in Multan with injury and failed to find form with the bat on his return.

The talismanic Stokes has been central to England's attacking philosophy, which saw records tumble in the victory in the first Multan Test.

But he said consistency had been an issue since.

"We need to do things for longer," said Stokes, whose team next tours New Zealand for a three-Test series in late November.

"As I said, we did good things in very small amounts of times at certain points throughout the second game and this game.

"But when you don't sustain that, you know you're always going to start falling away."

'Noman and Sajid too good for us,' admits England skipper Ben Stokes post Test series defeat vs Pakistan

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar says that the International Cricket Council (ICC) must be thinking about continuing the Test status of Pak Test team. The comments come after Shan Masood-led team's humiliating innings loss against England in first Test in Multan despite scoring 550+ runs in the first innings.

"Fans are saying that Pakistan should withdraw from WTC. I saw some comments. ICC must be thinking 'should we send teams to Pakistan and keep their Test status alive'. It's just disheartening. This is going to hurt Pakistan cricket, fans and the upcoming talents. I want to request the PCB to sort out this mess," said Akhtar during a discussion on local news channel PTV Sports.

The pacer also hit&nbsp;out on the steady decline of Pakistan cricket over a decade and said: "You will reap what you sow. Over the decades, I have seen the decline. The situation is disappointing. Losing is fine, but the game should be close. However, what we saw over the past two days, they completely gave up hope. This shows that we aren't good enough. England scored 800+ and Bangladesh also beat you."

The loss against England comes on the back of 0-2 series whitewash against Bangladesh, also at home. The last time Pakistan won a Test at home was in year 2021 and has been in decline ever since. Akhtar blamed weak management and captain for the current situation of the Pak cricket.

"If your management and captain are weak, there will be groupism. If the captain is selfish, there will be groupism. Same is the case if the coaches are afraid of the captain. The captain calls the shot when it comes to selection. This has been the culture since my playing days," the pacer said.

As for the first Test, England declared after scoring more than 800 runs in their first innings after Pakistan were folded for 556. The visitors then went on to win the game by an innings and 47 runs as the home side failed to cope up with the pressure.

'ICC must be thinking...,' Shoaib Akhtar on Pakistan's status as Test team after humiliating loss vs England

Pakistan Test skipper Shan Masood blamed the bowlers for their innings loss against England in first Test in Multan inside four days. The loss came despite Pakistan scoring 550+ runs in the first innings but allowing England to score 800+ in reply.

"What England showed us is you can find a way. They took 20 wickets on this pitch, so you can't say it's impossible to take 20 wickets on this pitch," Masood said after the post-match presentation.&nbsp;

"We can't find the easy way out to those 20 wickets, because then we wouldn't have scored a huge first-innings score. You have to find a way as a team, and the formula of Test cricket is you can't win a Test without taking 20 wickets. That, and first-innings runs," he added.

During the match, many broadcasters and former cricketers criticised the pitch for being benign. Masood, however, reasoned that it was the same for both the teams with same bowling combination but only England found a way to take wickets.

"It was the same pitch for both sides, and both sides were similar - three pacers and two spinners," he said. "They found a way, and we didn't execute as well. Conditions change over the course of a Test, and we have to learn to find a way.

"We take the discussion of the pitch too seriously. You plan a pitch for your squad and your strategy, but you can't control every aspect of the pitch."

PAK vs ENG, 1st Test: WATCH | Aamer Jamal takes sensational one-handed catch to dismiss Ollie Pope

England skipper Ben Stokes has officially been ruled out of the upcoming first Test against Pakistan in Multan. Stokes is still recovering from a hamstring injury which he had suffered in the Hundred tournament. The first Test begins on Monday (Oct 7).

"I tried my hardest to try and get myself fit for this first game but we've taken the call to miss this one. I've not quite managed to get game-ready," Stokes said as reported by cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.&nbsp;

"We got to a certain point, but just looking at the bigger picture around what we've got coming up and actually physically where I'm at with my rehab, I'm not quite ready to play.

"Whatever sports you play, you're going to get injuries. I'm 33 now, so I've put my body through quite a lot. I've started working incredibly hard over the last two years: I know that I'm getting older, so it's not through lack of effort. It's just one of those things where, with what we do, you're going to put yourself at risk every time you walk out on the field for injuries," he added.

Stokes had also not played the three-Test home series against Sri Lanka which England won 2-1 under Ollie Pope's captaincy. With the all-rounder out of the picture at least for the first game of the series, Pope will be leading England in fourth successive Test.

England are in Pakistan for a three-Test series and even if Stokes becomes fit for the second Test, he'll most probably be playing as a specialist batter only.

England pacer Chris Woakes, meanwhile, will be playing his first overseas Test in more than two years and first in Asia since 2016 after being named in England's playing XI for the first Test.

England skipper Ben Stokes ruled out from first Test against Pakistan

On Wednesday (Oct 2), the England Cricket Board (ECB) announced a 14-man squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of the West Indies. It sees the return of limited-overs skipper Jos Buttler, who missed the home T20I and ODI series versus Australia due to a calf injury. Apart from Buttler, three uncapped players were some notable inclusions. Buttler missed The Hundred due to calf issues and, as a result, also skipped the three T20Is and five ODIs versus Australia at home. Phil Salt led the T20I team in his absence, with the three-match series ending at 1-1. In the five ODIs, Harry Brook took charge of the side and despite a good fight, the hosts lost to current ODI champions 3-2.

Speaking of the uncapped players, Jafer Chohan is a new addition altogether. He has claimed 22 wickets so far from 23 matches in his short career. In addition, fast bowler John Turner and spin-bowling all-rounder Dan Mousley are the other uncapped players. However, the duo were part of the ODI squad versus Australia but didn't get a game.

Turner, who was a part of the Caribbean tour last December as well, has accounted for 35 and 42 wickets in his List A and T20 career. On the other hand, Mousley has amassed 1,100 runs in his short T20 career along with 50 wickets from 63 matches.&nbsp;

Notably, two more players will join the 14-man squad ahead of England's third Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, beginning on Oct 24.

England captain Harry Brook insisted he was always confident of coming good after starring in a 186-run rout of Australia at Lord's on Friday that set up a one-day international series decider with the world champions.

Brook, leading England in the absence of the injured Jos Buttler, followed his match-winning and maiden ODI hundred at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday with a superb 87 from 58 balls at Lord's. &nbsp;

In a match reduced by rain to 39 overs per side, the big-hitting Liam Livingstone added late impetus with a whirlwind 62 not out from just 27 balls as England posted an imposing total of 312-5.&nbsp;

Australia, following a promising start to their reply, collapsed to 126 all out inside 25 overs as England levelled the five-match series at 2-2 ahead of Sunday's finale at Bristol.

Brook came under fire from former England captains Michael Vaughan and Alastair Cook for the way he succumbed to frustration while being dismissed in this month's third Test loss to Sri Lanka at the Oval.

But in an ODI format which is unfamiliar to many members of a new-look England side, the 25-year-old produced his second superbly-paced innings of the week. &nbsp;

"It felt like only a matter of time for me," Brook told reporters.&nbsp;

"I feel like I've been playing well all summer, everything just needed to click. The last couple of games for me have been really special."

England opener Ben Duckett survived an awkward opening spell from Mitchell Starc to make 63 before Livingstone smashed seven sixes, including four in an astounding last over from the left-arm fast bowler that cost 28 runs.

"He was striking it unbelievably well," Brook said of Livingstone. "We all know what he's capable of doing at the back end (of an innings)."

<h2>'Phenomenal'</h2>

Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh put on 68 in the first nine overs of Australia's reply before the innings subsided as Brydon Carse (3-36) and Jofra Archer (2-33) did the bulk of the early damage in helpful conditions under the floodlights.

Archer, plagued by injury since starring in England's triumphant 2019 World Cup campaign, touched speeds of 93 mph (150 km/h), with fellow paceman Matthew Potts rounding off the home side's fine all-round display with an ODI best 4-38.&nbsp;

And express quick Archer also struck Marnus Labuschagne a nasty blow on the elbow.&nbsp;

"It was phenomenal to watch," Brook said. "We knew the seamers were getting the most out the pitch so I just tried to bowl them as many overs as possible."

Australia, without Cameron Green after the all-rounder suffered a tour-ending back injury, had few answers as skipper Marsh admitted.

"Fair play to England, they put us under a lot of pressure with the bat," Marsh told Sky Sports.

"We couldn't get early wickets and they thoroughly out-played us today. Liam Livingstone played a gem of an innings."

He added: "England bowled really well. We lost wickets continually and that's cricket."

Clinical England thrash Australia in fourth ODI to bring series at 2-2

England's Harry Brook created history during the third ODI against Australia on Tuesday (Sep 24), becoming the youngest England skipper to score an ODI hundred. Brook is England's stand-in skipper for the series in place of injured Jos Buttler. Before him, Sir Alastair Cook had the record of being England's youngest skipper with ODI century which he had scored aged 26 in 2011.

Apart from that, England also snapped Australia's 14-ODI win streak going back to ODI World Cup 2023 which they had won by beating hosts India in the final.

Thanks to Brook's hundred, England managed to keep the five-match series alive with a 46 run win by Duckworth Lewis System.

Brook, who scored unbeaten 110 off 94 balls, came in to bat with England struggling at 11-2 in a chase of 305 after Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc had removed both openers.

"It’s just nice to see some rewards,” Brook said post-match. "I’m glad I managed to play the way I wanted to. It’s nice to get that first hundred on the board, and hopefully there’s plenty more to come."

He received excellent support from Will Jacks (84) in a match-changing stand of 156. By the time rain curtailed England's pursuit of a target of 305, they had long since done enough to win.

Brook came under fire for his post-match comments following England's defeat in the series opener in Nottingham when he tried to explain some loose dismissals by saying: "If you get caught somewhere on the boundary or in the field then who cares?"

Australia coach Andrew McDonald was left to rue the absence of key spinner Adam Zampa, a late withdrawal through illness, as England ended his side's run of 14 consecutive ODI wins.

McDonald had no doubt about Brook's quality, saying: "Full credit to Harry. He's an impressive player and he's going to have a long career for England.

"He's going to give us some headaches over the journey. The way he played, the way he led today...sometimes you've got to take your hat off to the opposition. This is one of those moments."

ENG vs AUS: Harry Brook's maiden hundred helps England keep series alive with 3rd ODI win vs Australia

England Test skipper Ben Stokes says he's ready to make a comeback to white-ball cricket if asked by coach Brendon McCullum who now is an all-format coach. Stokes, who has revived England's Test cricket after taking over as captain and McCullum as coach, retired from ODI cricket in 2022 to focus on Tests.

Before retiring, the all-rounder played match-winning innings for England in both the 2019 ODI World Cup final and the 2022 T20 World Cup final. He last played in white-ball cricket during the 2023 ODI World Cup where England failed miserably in title defence.

"If I get the call and [Baz] says, 'do you want to come and play?' Then obviously, it's definitely going to be a yes, but I'm not going to be too disappointed if I don't, because I can just sit back and watch everyone else go out and smack it," Stokes told Sky Sports during the third ODI vs Australia on Tuesday (Sep 24).&nbsp;

"I've played a lot of white-ball cricket for England, and I'm very happy with what I've achieved in that form of the game," he added.

Stokes, however, cleared that so far there's been no talks whatsoever with McCullum who was named England's white-ball coach earlier this month.&nbsp;

"To be honest, we've not even spoken about anything like that whatsoever. I think he's just letting me concentrate on what I need to concentrate on, especially around the Test team," said Stokes.

The all-rounder also praised McCullum and said that the move will help align philosophies across formats for England.

"It's an amazing opportunity for the white-ball team to experience what Baz has brought to the Test team.&nbsp;

"He's an incredible coach who speaks with utter commitment, and it's nice to have all three teams now with the same messaging and the same philosophies towards playing cricket," said Stokes.

"It's an amazing opportunity for the white-ball team to experience what Baz has brought to the Test team. "He's an incredible coach who speaks with utter commitment, and it's nice to have all three teams now with the same messaging and the same philosophies towards playing cricket," said Stokes.

England will continue to manage workload of speedster Jofra Archer to protect him from getting injured again and again. Archer was the hero of England's ODI World Cup 2019 victory but has been on the sidelines for majority of the time every since.

He now has been included in England's 15-man squad for the upcoming five-ODI series against Australia at home but will be used strategically.

"Jofra will have to be managed throughout the series," England's designated ODI skipper Jos Buttler told Sky Sports on Sunday (Sep 15).&nbsp;

"He's played a really good stint now of T20 cricket, but obviously you can only bowl four overs in there. There's a jump in intensity getting loads up to taking full part in an ODI - and of course, as an England fan, to push those loads up hopefully to get back into the Test arena as well," Buttler added.

Archer has been eased back into&nbsp;international cricket very meticulously with his first international games after a long injury layoff being two T20Is against Pakistan in May earlier this year.

He then played all the games for his side in the T20 World Cup 2024 but has been put on workload management since then and hasn't fully participated for Surrey in the Vitality Blast. He also played selectively in The Hundred before playing the first T20I against Australia earlier this month.

England's interim coach Marcus Trescothick also echoed the same thoughts as Buttler and said: "He knows the plan. It's discussed long in advance of picking the team on each day. We know what we're doing with him, and where we're going. He's comfortable: he knows what he's doing."

England will hope for Archer to stay fit for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy early next year and the away Ashes in November 2025.

Pathum Nissanka's superb unbeaten century guided Sri Lanka to an ultimately commanding eight-wicket win at The Oval on Monday as they ended a decade-long wait for a Test-match victory in England.

Sri Lanka, set a target of 219, reached that total for the loss of two wickets before lunch on the fourth day, with Nissanka 127 not out and Angelo Mathews 32 not out in an unbroken stand of 111.

Victory gave Sri Lanka just a fourth Test win in England and first since a 100-run success at Headingley back in 2014.

England, however, took this three-match series 2-1 after wins at Old Trafford (five wickets) and Lord's (190 runs).

But defeat meant England, who whitewashed the West Indies 3-0 earlier in the season, failed to achieve a first home campaign clean sweep since 2004, when Michael Vaughan oversaw seven successive wins.

Nissanka, named player-of-the-match after also making 64 in the first innings, told Sky Sports: "It was a great opportunity to play in England and I enjoyed that innings."

"I just wanted to play my normal game and I have done that," added the opener, who spent two years out of the Test side.

And for Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva, there was no doubting the significance of leading his country to only their fourth win in 21 Tests in England.

"This is one of the happiest moments in my career and my life," said De Silva.

"We had a tough time in the last two weeks so to come here and get a win in English conditions against an English team, it is a very good moment for me, my team, and my country as well."

Sri Lanka resumed on 94-1, already well-placed to end a run of seven straight Test defeats by England.

Nissanka, recalled at Lord's, was 53 not out and Kusal Mendis unbeaten on 30.

Mendis, however, had added just nine runs to his score when he hooked a Gus Atkinson bouncer to fine leg, where Shoaib Bashir, doing well to sight the ball on a gloomy morning, held an excellent low catch diving to his left.

Sri Lanka were now 108-2 as Mathews, who made a brilliant 160 in their Headingley success a decade ago, walked in to bat.

England captain Ollie Pope, with Sri Lanka making good progress against the quicks at 137-2, brought on off-spinner Bashir.

Bashir, however, promptly conceded 10 runs in an over, Nissanka pulling a dragged down ball to square leg and Mathews sweeping another four.

The diminutive Nissanka's punched three off Atkinson through point saw the 26-year-old complete an excellent 107-ball hundred, including 11 fours.

And having reached the landmark, Nissanka hooked fast bowler Olly Stone for two sixes.

Nissanka ended the match by cutting Bashir for four, having already surpassed his previous highest Test score of 103 against the West Indies at North Sound in 2021.

<h2>- England 'shot ourselves in the foot' -</h2>

England squandered several strong positions, including collapsing from 261-3 to 325 all out in their first innings despite 154 from Pope -- his first century since stepping in for the injured Ben Stokes as skipper at the start of this series.

They also allowed Sri Lanka to recover from 93-5 to 263 in reply, with Pope deploying an all-spin attack after tea on a gloomy second day.

England led by 62 runs in the first innings.

But their top-order batted as if they had double that lead second time around, with England collapsing spectacularly to 82-7 before being dismissed for 156 in just 34 overs on Sunday.

Lahiru Kumara took 4-21 and left-arm swing bowler Vishwa Fernando 3-40 including the prize scalp of Joe Root for just 12.

Only wicketkeeper Jamie Smith's counter-attacking 67 off 50 balls, including 10 fours and a six, ensured Sri Lanka were chasing more than 200 for victory.

"It's disappointing not to be on the right side of the result," said Pope. "Day three (Sunday), we probably shot ourselves in the foot a little bit.

"We weren't at our best and credit to Sri Lanka. The way Nissanka played was high-class and they deserved to win this Test."

Pathum Nissanka stars with unbeaten ton as Sri Lanka record first Test win in England after a decade

England fast bowler Chris Woakes was forced to bowl spin on day 2 of the third Test against Sri Lanka as umpires deemed bad light for fast bowling. Woakes, who had already bowled two balls in his over, bowled the rest four balls as off-spinner, a rare sight in cricket.

Woakes' teammate Joe Root, who is himself a part-time spinner, was seen laughing on the change while standing in slip. Have a look at the video below:

The stadium work made PCB think of playing one Test in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with Sharjah and Dubai out of the question due to upcoming Women's T20 World Cup shifted from Bangladesh.

PCB chairman Mohasin Naqvi, while inspecting Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, apparently confirmed the England series being played in Pakistan with Multan and Rawalpindi as the venues.

It is, however, still unclear that which venue will host the relocated Karachi Test. With Shanghai Corporation Organisation (SCO) summit scheduled in Islamabad on October 15-16, Rawalpindi, the twin city of the capital, doesn't look an ideal venue for the second Test.

England Cricket Board (ECB), meanwhile, has also given the go-ahead to play the series in Pakistan. England coach Brendon McCullum, however, wants the venues to be finalised quickly so they can name the squad accordingly.

The series against England could be defining for Pakistan skipper Shan Masood who's undergoing some scrutiny following the two-Test series loss against Bangladesh.

Before losing 0-2 to Bangladesh at home, Pakistan also lost 0-3 against Australia earlier this year. This would be Masood's third series as Test skipper after replacing Babar Azam in the aftermath of 2023 ODI World Cup where Pakistan failed to make it to the semis.

England Test skipper Ben Stokes has expressed 'surprise' over the appointment of Brendon McCullum as the English side's all-format coach. McCullum had been England's Test coach since 2022 and now has been given the added responsibility of white-ball as well. He replaces Matthew Mott who was sacked following England's failure to defend the T20 World Cup title, earlier in 2024.

"I was very surprised by the news. First and foremost, I think it's an unbelievable move for English cricket to go back to having a coach in charge of all the teams. You look at what Baz has achieved with the Test side, it's been amazing," said Stokes as reported by news agency IANS citing cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.

Stokes, however, is super excited for McCullum to work with white-ball skipper Jos Buttler during a time when England is facing criticism for failing to defend both their ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup titles.

"I'm really excited for the white-ball team to have the opportunity to be able to work with Baz, listen to him speak, and hear his opinions. I think Jos is going to really, really enjoy having him as his coach to work with," Stokes said.

"And you look at all the new faces who are coming into that white-ball team now, I couldn't think of a better person for them to come in and work under at international level for the first time. He just gives everyone the platform to go out and enjoy themselves. Baz never puts any added pressure on anybody's shoulders," he added.

McCullum will start his twin role from&nbsp;January 2025. Interim white-ball head coach Marcus Trescothick will fulfil his role during the upcoming Australia series as well as the Caribbean tour in November as well.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Test team, and I'm excited to extend my role to include the white-ball sides," McCullum said on his appointment.

McCullum had shown little to no interest in the role earlier, given the hectic schedule of England. He, however, took the job after assurance from the director of men's cricket Rob Key.

'Unbelievable move...,' England Test skipper Ben Stokes 'surprised' as Brendon McCullum named white-ball coach

England's stand-in skipper Ollie Pope has played down the criticism by former cricketers including Michael Vaughan on his batting performance in the first two Tests against Sri Lanka.

Pope has managed just 30 runs across four innings of the first two Tests but England managed to win both the matches to take a unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

"I'm not surprised," he said after the series clinching victory at the Lord's in the second Test on Sunday (Sep 1).

"Chatting to Stokesy before this series, when you're captain as well, you're going to attract a lot more [criticism]. To be honest, it is just important to block it out and keep staying close with the people around you. Pope was named captain after England's regular Test skipper Ben Stokes got injured leading into the series while playing in the Hundred tournament.

Vaughan was not impressed with Pope at all and had said that Pope is "an insecure human being" and "not the kind of personality" who should lead England.

"Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but it's important for us as a team and me to stay and keep trusting the people in the four walls, because that's not going to help me get back into my best form. Sometimes, when you have two bad games, it can feel a lot worse than it is because of the noise that's surrounding it," said Pope in response.

"For me, it's just trying to stay as level as I can and keep on trusting the people around me, putting my work in, and not really overthinking it, to be honest. When I went and made good runs in that West Indies series, that's exactly what I was playing like, so there's no real need for me to get too involved in what people are saying."

Stokes is expected to be back for the next England Test series while Pope will be leading them in last Test against Sri Lanka which starts Friday (Sep 6).

"For me, it's just trying to stay as level as I can and keep on trusting the people around me, putting my work in, and not really overthinking it, to be honest. When I went and made good runs in that West Indies series, that's exactly what I was playing like, so there's no real need for me to get too involved in what people are saying." Stokes is expected to be back for the next England Test series while Pope will be leading them in last Test against Sri Lanka which starts Friday (Sep 6).

'Feel a lot worse...,' England's Ollie Pope on criticism as stand-in skipper by former players

"I just want to play, and try, and do my bit for the team and score the runs as many as I can and see where we get to. But there's no better feeling I mean, it's obviously amazing when, you score 100, you'd be lying if you said it wasn't, a big part of why you start playing the game and what you love about it," Root in a video shared by England Cricket on social media platform X.

"But there's no better feeling than winning a Test match. So the more, it can affect games and the more you can, add to the team, the greater it is. So, that will be the main focus. And hopefully more days like this will come with that mentality," he added.

Root scored 103 in the second innings to take over Sir Alastair Cook's record of 33 Test tons for most Test hundreds for England.

Overall, Root is joint fifth on the list of most Test hundreds along with Pakistan's Yunis Khan, India's Sunil Gavaskar, West Indies' Brian Lara and Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene. 'I can and...,' England batter Joe Root on breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record of most Test runs

Dhananjaya de Silva and debutant fast bowler Milan Rathnayake both made fine fifties as Sri Lanka recovered from a dramatic top-order collapse on the opening day of the first Test against England at Old Trafford Wednesday.

Sri Lanka were in dire straits at 6-3 after skipper De Silva won the toss, losing their first three wickets for no runs in 10 balls.

Yet they recovered to 236 all out, De Silva top-scoring with 74 and tailender Rathnayake, with only his third first-class fifty, close behind in making 72.

The pair checked England's progress during an eighth-wicket partnership of 63, with no other Sri Lanka batsman making more than Kusal Mendis's 24.

Chris Woakes struck twice in an over on his way to 3-32 in 11 overs. &nbsp;

De Silva's impressive innings ended when he turned a quicker ball from off-spinner Shoaib Bashir straight to Dan Lawrence at leg slip, with the 20-year-old taking 3-55 in 23 overs.

Ben Duckett and Lawrence, recalled in place of the injured Zak Crawley, guided England to 22-0 before bad light ended play for the day at 5:52 pm (1652 GMT).

Sri Lanka's initial collapse ensured a dream start for stand-in England captain Ollie Pope, leading his country for the first time after Ben Stokes was ruled out with a torn hamstring.

The tourists came into their first Test in England in eight years on the back of just a solitary warm-up fixture -- a defeat by the second-string England Lions -- with De Silva insisting Tuesday that Sri Lanka had wanted at least one more game before the series started.

"The conditions are quite different to Asian countries," he said. "We wanted to play a few matches, but that's what we get."

<h2>Stunning slump</h2>

Sri Lanka's collapse began in the sixth over when Dimuth Karunaratne top-edged a hook off fast bowler Gus Atkinson to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

Woakes then took two wickets in the next over, with Nishan Madushka, the other opening batsman, driving loosely at an outswinger and edging to Joe Root at first slip as he fell for four.

Five balls later, Angelo Mathews was plumb lbw for a duck, playing no shot to a Woakes delivery that nipped back off the pitch.

Mendis was undone by express fast bowler Mark Wood, with Mendis gloving a superb 93 mph (150 km/h) delivery that reared up from short of a length to second slip.

De Silva, however, pulled Atkinson for a commanding four and completed an impressively quick fifty off just 56 balls.

He was reprieved on 65, when Smith missed a difficult stumping chance off Bashir, but was out shortly afterwards to leave Sri Lanka 176-8.

But the 28-year-old Rathnayake, undaunted by the loss of his skipper, went on to score a 96-ball fifty in style when the left-handed batsman drove Bashir for a straight six that also took Sri Lanka past 200.

With the floodlights piercing increasingly gloomy skies, Pope turned to part-time spinner Root in a bid to snatch a wicket at a time when deploying the fast bowlers might have seen the umpires halt play for bad light.

Rathnayake, however, responded by launching Root for six over long-off. He also drove Bashir through extra cover before hitting him to Woakes at mid-on.&nbsp;

Before play started, there was a minute's applause in honour of Graham Thorpe, the former England batsman and assistant coach, with both teams, as well as the match officials, wearing black armbands in his honour.

Thorpe died, aged 55, earlier this month after being hit by a train. His wife, Amanda, confirmed he had taken his own life after suffering from depression for several years.

ENG vs SL: Big blow! England captain Ben Stokes ruled out of remaining English summer after hamstring tear

Former England bowler James Anderson has said that he might play in the domestic The Hundred tournament after his recent retirement from Test cricket. The former pacer, however, still is in disbelief over quitting Test cricket after playing a record 188 matches for England.

“I might be in a bit of denial because I’m well aware I won’t play for England again, but I’ve still not made a decision on my actual cricket career,” Anderson told The Press Association.

“I watch The Hundred and see the ball swinging around in the first 20 balls and I think: ‘I can do that, I can still do that.’ I don’t know if that is a viable option, to maybe see if I could do a job in white-ball cricket. Franchise cricket is something I’ve never done,” he added.

“I still feel [playing domestically] is not off the table. The way that my body feels, the way I have been bowling in recent years, I still feel I could potentially have something to offer on that front,” explained the highest Test wicket-taker pacer.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting made a bold early claim, backing Pat Cummis &amp; Co. to beat India 3-1 and reclaim the BG Trophy for the first time since 2014-15.

India and Australia are set to lock horns in a five-match Test series, i.e. the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting later this year Down Under. Notably, this will be the first time since the 1991-92 season that the two heavyweights will square off to play five Tests in a series.

Prior to the series commencement, India will also play a two-day day-night practice Test at Manuka Oval, Canberra. Rohit &amp; Co. will be eager to retain the BG Trophy once again but will be wary of a strong comeback from Australia on their home soil.

Former England captain Graham Thorpe passed away last week. The 55-year-old&nbsp;played 100 Tests and 82 ODIs, scoring 6744 and 2380 runs, respectively. The England and Wales Cricket Board said on X, "It is with great sadness that we share the news that Graham Thorpe, MBE, has passed away. There seem to be no appropriate words to describe the deep shock we feel at Graham’s death. More than one of England’s finest-ever batters, he was a beloved member of the cricket family and revered by fans all over the world." However, his family has revealed that Thorpe committed suicide, succumbing to&nbsp;his battle against depression.

<h2>'He really did believe that we would be better off without him'</h2>

Thorpe left behind his wife Amanda and their two daughters Kitty, 22, and Emma, 19, as well as his first wife Nicky and their two children, Henry and Amelia. Amanda told The Times, "Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and who loved him, he did not get better. He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him and we are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life."

Amanda further opined, "For the past couple of years, Graham had been suffering from major depression and anxiety. This led him to make a serious attempt on his life in May 2022, which resulted in a prolonged stay in an intensive care unit."

"Despite glimpses of hope and of the old Graham, he continued to suffer from depression and anxiety, which at times got very severe. We supported him as a family and he tried many, many treatments but unfortunately none of them really seemed to work," she added.

Atkinson also took three wickets in an over during his spell, becoming the fist England bowler to do so in a decade. The last England bowler to take three wickets in an over was Ben Stokes, in 2014, against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Watch his wickets here:

England pacer James Anderson is all set to play his farewell Test against West Indies at Lord's from Wednesday (Jul 10). Speaking at a press conference ahead of his last Test, Anderson said that he 'didn't have choice' but to move on.

"It's difficult to say. I've not really got a choice," Anderson told reporters on Monday (Jul 8) when asked if he's quitting a bit sooner. The question was in response to Anderson's 7/35 for Lancashire in English county earlier this month.

"It was important for me that I try and put in some good performances to finish with. I loved being out on the field with Lancashire last week. I've always loved playing for Lancashire. I've not played a huge amount for them over the last 20 years because of England duties. But every time I've had a chance to go back to play for them, I've tried to give it my all and that's exactly what I did last week. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the win because of the north-west weather," he added.

His after retirement plans have already been confirmed by England Cricket chief Rob Key. The veteran will be joining the national team as a mentor.

Anderson made his debut against Zimbabwe in May 2003 and has played 187 Tests - the second most after Sachin Tendulkar's 200 and the most for England. He has 700 Test wickets to his name - the third most overall behind Australia spinner Shane Warne (708) and Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralidaran (800).

Among pacers, Anderson's 700 wickets are the most. He's also second on the list of bowlers with most Test wickets at home with 434 scalps to his name and behind only Muralidaran (493). Among other records, Anderson has 119 Test wickets at the Lord's - the second most for a bowler at a single venue behind Muralidaran's 166 at Colombo.

Former Australia captain Tim Paine feels England is thinking too highly about their cricket in their head, but in reality, they are far from being a fantastic Test side. Since Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum took over the leadership roles a couple of years ago, England’s Test cricket flourished for some time before falling flat during the home Ashes and away India tour.&nbsp;

With local media hyping their ultra-attacking style of play, claiming it to have changed how Test cricket is played, Paine said England is an average team, and they must put their heads around it.

Meanwhile, the ECB released a documentary on the 2023 Ashes, a bittersweet series for both teams (ended in a 2-2 draw). In one of the episodes, Captain Ben Stokes gave a speech after the drawn fourth Test (at Old Trafford), wherein he referred to England’s newest approach as something that will ‘live forever in the memory of people who were lucky enough to witness us play cricket.’

“Everything we’ve done up until now isn’t going to stop because we haven’t managed to win the urn back. The reward for our work isn’t what we get but what we become, and what we have managed to do is we’ve managed to become a sports team that will live forever in the memory of people who were lucky enough to witness us play cricket.

“I know it’s going to be a bit flat, I know it’s going to hurt that we go into the next game not being able to get the urn back, but what we have done is something a lot bigger than any Ashes trophy could ever signify for this team: be the team that everybody will always remember,” Stokes said to his teammates after rain spoiled England’s chances of winning the fourth Test.

Although fans, several pundits and opposition, mainly Australia, thrashed this comment on social media, saying Stokes went a bit too far with this, Paine thinks Stokes’ comment was blown out of proportion.&nbsp;

“I think it was taken slightly out of context because he was talking in a changing room, and it was a bigger speech, so I will say that,” Paine said.

<h2>Average Cricket Team</h2>

Though this new-age England Test Team tasted success both home and away, Paine feels if they think they have done anything differently and helped make this format exciting in any way, they haven’t.&nbsp;

“However, it’s just this continued belief that they’re completely changing the game and they’re doing this amazing stuff, and everyone’s going to remember it … they’re not.

“You’re coming dead last in the World Test Championship. You’re not going to be a team that everyone remembers watching, and you’re not doing anything outrageously good that we haven’t seen before.

“You’re an average cricket team. You are, at the moment, a below-average cricket team, and I think they need to get their head around that a little bit,” Paine noted while talking on one of SEN Tassie Breakfast episodes. &nbsp;

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has revealed that he received texts from England players before their last league stage match against Scotland in ongoing T20 World Cup. It is to be noted that England needed arch-rivals Australia to beat Scotland and a win over Namibia in their own match to qualify for the knockout stage.

A comment by Aussie pacer Josh Hazlewood before the match where he suggested that keeping England out of tournament would be in their best interest sparked 'spirit of game' debate.
