Ben Stokes stunned one and all by announcing his decision to retire from ODI cricket on Monday (July 17). The decision came a day after England's home ODI series loss to India. Stokes' decision to retire from the 50-over format has shocked many but the star all-rounder cited the hectic international calendar as a reason for him stepping aside from the shorter format.

Stokes had mentioned that England's three-match ODI series opener versus South Africa, held on Tuesday (July 18), will be his last encounter in the format. Thus, when the swashbuckling 31-year-old came out to bat for the last time in ODIs, he received a standing ovation from the Durham crowd. Here's the video of the same:

Ben Stokes announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Monday (July 18), a day after India won the 50-over series versus hosts Jos Buttler-led England (also a day prior to English side's ongoing home ODIs versus South Africa).

Stokes retirement has led to many questioning the relevance of ODI cricket, especially since the surge of T20s. A lot of white-ball ICC events are lined-up each year, till 2031, along with the ICC Test Championship cycles as well. Hence, players are finding it tough to sustain themselves across formats and also be present for franchise cricket. Hence, Stokes walked away from the 50-over format, being part of England's memorable 2019 World Cup triumph. Recently, former English captain-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain opined that the all-rounder's decision came as he feared he will become 'stale' playing all forms of the game.

Hussain also pointed out Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson's current struggles, who are playing all formats at regular intervals and finding it tough as well. In his coloum for The Daily Mail, Hussain wrote, "Every time he [Stokes] goes onto that field, he wants to be 100% committed, not 80% - and that is what makes him the player he is."

"Some might suggest 80% of Stokes is enough but the problem is that once you play at 80%, it can lead lead to a drop in performance in another format. Just look at what has happened to Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson, for example. He doesn't want to become stale. Or go through the motions. He couldn't do that," he mentioned.

"Yes, his decision was something of a shout to the administrators because at the age of 31 someone like him shouldn't have to retire from a certain format," Nasser added.

For the unversed, both Williamson and Kohli are struggling for form at the moment. While Kohli's century-drought continues since late 2019, he also ended the England tour without a fifty. Williamson, on the other hand, scored only a solitary fifty in IPL 2022 and returned with not even a single half-century in the NZ's away Tests versus England.

Virat Kohli couldn't do anything significant with the bat during India's recent loss versus England in the fifth and final rescheduled Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Kohli returned with scores of 11 and 20 as India lost the plot despite a sizeable 132-run lead to lose the contest after setting up a challenging 378-run target for the Ben Stokes-led hosts.

Jonny Bairstow slammed twin centuries in the match whereas Joe Root's 142 not out propelled the home side to a famous series-levelling seven-wicket win on Tuesday (July 05). The duo stitched an unbroken 269-run fourth-wicket stand in England's pursuit of 378 and ended India's hopes of winning their first-ever Test series on English soil since 2007. While Kohli failed with the bat, he made heads turn when he sledged Bairstow during England's first innings. Back then, he was trolled severely by social media users and some former cricketers also didn't like Kohli taking on Bairstow, which only led to the Englishman reaching triple-figure mark in a jiffy.

However, Kohli was recently lauded by England great David Lloyd after the Edgbaston Test. Lloyd admired Kohli's gesture towards centurions Bairstow-Root after they guided the team to a famous win on Day 5. "I thought the on-field scenes at the conclusion of the game were glorious, with India's players congratulating Root and Jonny Bairstow and recognising the epic job they had done," Lloyd wrote in his column for The Daily Mail.

India and England ended their five-match Test series on Tuesday (July 05) with Ben Stokes & Co. chasing a 378-run target with seven wickets to spare. Jasprit Bumrah-led India dominated the rescheduled fifth Test but lost the plot in the third innings before England completely outplayed them in the run-chase.

ENG vs IND, 5th Test: Barmy Army posts false series result, former Indian spinner Amit Mishra reacts

There was a lot of drama and action during Day 3 of the ongoing Edgbaston Test between India and England. Resuming the day at 83-5, trailing India's 416 by 333 runs, England were on the back foot. With India well and truly on top in the series decider, former skipper Virat Kohli sledged Jonny Bairstow at the start of the day, which made heads turn, when the latter said something to him between overs.

Despite Bairstow slamming his third ton, in successive Tests, India ended up with a healthy 132-run lead. The onus fell on Kohli, who came out to bat in India's second essay at 43-2. The Barmy Army, England cricket's fans, were all set to settle scores with King Kohli and taunted him with 'Cheerio' chants after the right-hander fell for a 40-ball 20.

Jos Buttler has been appointed England`s new limited-overs captain following the retirement of Eoin Morgan, the country`s cricket board (ECB) said on Thursday. The 31-year-old, who had been Morgan`s deputy since 2015, has played 151 one-day internationals and 88 Twenty20s for England after making his international debut in 2011.

Morgan retired from international cricket on Tuesday after battling form and fitness issues in recent months.
"Jos has been part of our white-ball set-up for over a decade and was integral in the transformation of the way the team has played its attacking brand of cricket," said Rob Key, managing director of the England men`s team.

"I believe the extra responsibility will take his game to a new level and inspire those around him." Among the most-feared big hitters in the limited-overs game, Buttler has been in devastating form, smashing 248 runs in two innings in the recent 3-0 ODI series rout of the Netherlands.

He also finished top scorer in the Indian Premier League T20 competition, notching up 863 runs, including four centuries, for the Rajasthan Royals as the franchise made the final. "I would like to offer my sincere thanks and gratitude to Eoin Morgan for his outstanding leadership over the past seven years. It has been the most memorable period for everyone involved," Buttler said in a statement.

The wicketkeeper-batsman has a big void to fill as he sets out to build on Morgan`s impressive legacy. His predecessor led the team to the 50-over World Cup title in 2019 and turned them into a white-ball powerhouse, ending as England`s most successful ODI captain.

"He has been an inspirational leader, and it has been fantastic to play under him. There are lots of things that I have learnt from him that I`ll take into this role," added Buttler. Buttler`s first assignment as skipper will be a three-match T20 series against India starting July 7. His first big test will come in the form of the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

Start of a new era! Jos Buttler replaces Eoin Morgan as England's white-ball captain

Team India are in a spot of bother ahead of the fifth and final Test versus England, which will get underway on July 01 in Edgbaston, Birmingham. On Sunday (June 26), the regular captain Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19 and went into isolation since then. As per a report in PTI, Rohit tested positive for the deadly virus once again on Wednesday (June 29) and was scheduled to undergo another test in the evening, followed by another on Thursday (June 30) on the eve of the final Test.

Addressing the media during a press conference, head coach Rahul Dravid spoke on Rohit's availability, whether Jasprit Bumrah will captain in Hitman's absence, and also made heads turn by stating that the team has plenty of options regarding who will open with Shubman Gill if Rohit misses out.

In this regard, Dravid said during a press conference, "We'll make a decision. We will weigh a lot of factors. Obviously, Mayank is a regular opener. someone who opens regularly. We have other options too; (KS) Bharat himself has opened in a lot of games for Andhra and showed in that side game that he is batting superbly at the moment. He scored a 70 and a 40 (43) after opening the batting. We got him to open in that innings keeping a lot of things in mind."

Dravid also added No. 3 batter Cheteshwar Pujara's name in the mix and said, "Pujara has got a lot of great quality. He has opened for India as well in the past. So I would not want to give things away, but like I said, in our minds, we are clear on the direction we are going. We will see what happens to Rohit, but I am not at liberty to disclose the playing XI. But we have clarity."

In Pujara's absence, when he was dropped for the Sri Lanka home series early this year, Hanuma Vihari had been slotted at the No. 3 position. Even Hanuma has opened for India in the MCG Test in 2018-19. Hence, India have a lot of options if Rohit misses out. For the unversed, regular opener KL Rahul is also out of action due to injury. Thus, India is without their two openers who commenced the innings in the four Tests of the incomplete five-match series versus England, which ended abruptly last year due to the Covid crisis in the then Virat Kohli-led Indian camp.

India is ahead by 2-1 in the series and, thus, have an unassailable lead. Hence, they have a solid chance to win a Test series on English soil for the first time since 2007.

Stunning numbers of Eoin Morgan, England's white-ball legend

It is the end of an era in English cricket as Eoin Morgan confirmed his international retirement on Tuesday (June 28). The ODI World Cup-winning skipper Morgan was expected to remain captain till this year's T20 World Cup, or 2023 50-over showpiece event in India, however, he decided to step aside after a dismal run with the bat for the past year and fitness concerns.

"To call time on what has been without doubt the most enjoyable and rewarding chapter of my career hasn't been an easy decision, but I believe now is the right time to do so, both for me, personally, and for both England white-ball sides I have led to this point," said Morgan in a statement issued by the England Cricket Board (ECB).

Thus, reactions have been pouring in from the cricket fraternity for Morgan, who retires as an absolute legend for England cricket in white-ball formats. The Irish-born swashbuckling left-hander started his career playing for his national side before switching to England. He ended his career with 700 runs in Tests and 7,701 and 2,458 runs in ODIs and T20Is, respectively, including 16 tons overall. Here are some of the reactions on Twitter:

On Tuesday (June 28), Eoin Morgan has confirmed his international retirement. In the last 24 hours, there were speculations from all corners regarding Morgan's future and the England white-ball skipper now broke his silence and confirmed that he is stepping aside from international cricket.

Morgan has had a stellar career at the international level. The Irish-born swashbuckling left-hander started his career playing for Ireland before he made a switch and joined the England cricket team. Since then, his career graph has only gone up, especially since he was named the permanent limited-overs captain in 2015. Under Morgan, England revamped their playing style in coloured clothings. The Three Lions ended as the semi-finalists in the 2017 Champions Trophy and 2021 T20 World Cup, and missed out on winning the title in the 2016 T20 World Cup before lifting the trophy in the 2019 ODI World Cup. Thus, he became the first-ever England captain to lead the national side to the elusive ODI WC trophy.

Morgan amassed 700 runs in Tests and 7,701 and 2,458 runs in ODIs and T20Is, respectively. The left-hander has ended with a total of 16 centuries and his destructive approach with the bat has been hailed by many over the years.

The veteran has been struggling with form and fitness since the last year and, hence, his retirement was always on the cards. With him stepping aside, Jos Buttler is a favourite to take charge of the white-ball sides. He has served as Morgan's deputy for long.

End of an era! England's ODI WC-winning skipper Eoin Morgan confirms international retirement

England's gung-ho approach was on display on the final day of the three-match Test series versus New Zealand in the Headingley encounter. Resuming their 296-run chase on Day 5, on Monday (June 27), Ben Stokes-led hosts defeated Kiwis by seven wickets to inflict a series whitewash over the World Test champions.

Ending Day 4 at 183-2, England was oncourse for a 3-0 scoreline with a settled Joe Root and Ollie Pope in the middle. The duo got together with the score of 51 for 2 after NZ set up another challenging target in the series. The script remained the same for England as they recovered after a poor start and continued their relentless attack to find the gaps and keep the scoreboard ticking. Thus, the unbroken third-wicket stand was expected to guide hosts to a comfortable win.

After a delayed start to Day 5, due to rain, England lost Pope for 82. Despite losing the right-hander as he was nearing a triple-figure score, Root got Jonny Bairstow's company as the two found the gaps with ease and the runs kept flowing in at regular intervals. Bairstow (71 not out off 44 deliveries) slammed the second-fastest fifty by an Englishman in whites and Root remained unbeaten on 86 as England completed a whitewash.

Talking about the contest, Kiwis had opted to bat first and rode on Daryl Mitchell's third consecutive ton of the series to post 329. With England reduced to 55 for 6, the visitors fancied their chances of attaining a healthy lead but Bairstow's stroke-filled 162, off 157 balls, and all-rounder Craig Overton's 97 propelled the Three Lions to 360 all-out, leading by 31 runs.

Tom Latham's 76, captain Kane Williamson's 48, Mitchell's 56 and keeper-batter Tom Blundell's 88 helped NZ post 326 in their second essay, setting up a challenging 296-run target. Despite having a competitive total to defend, the Black Caps faltered yet again and failed to run through England's middle and lower order, as was the case in the opening two games.

Lack of runs from their top-order and having no answers to England's all-out approach with the bat resulted in Kiwis' downfall in each and every game, despite them being on top on various occasions. Stokes & Co. will now gear up for the rescheduled fifth and final Test versus India, in Edgbaston, which commences on July 01. The Brendon McCullum-Stokes pair will be eager to prevent India from winning the incomplete five-match series, where they have conceded an unassailable lead to Rohit Sharma & Co., and end it with a 2-2 scoreline.

England's all-out approach results in series whitewash over New Zealand, win 3rd Test by 7 wickets

Eoin Morgan, England's white-ball skipper, is considering international retirement. The veteran English captain, who led to the Three Lions' resurgence in white-ball formats, has been contemplating hanging his boots ahead of England's white-ball series versus Rohit Sharma-led India, which kicks off on July 07.

As per a report in The Guardian, Morgan has been considering stepping aside from international cricket citing poor form and injury concerns. For the unversed, the 35-year-old Irish-born cricketer has had a dismal run since the last year. In 2021, Morgan had a poor run in T20Is, averaging only 16.67. This year, he averages 15 in two T20Is. Even in the England-Netherlands three ODIs, where the English batters had a ball, Morgan returned with two ducks on the trot before missing the final match due to a groin injury. The injury seems to have been the final nail in the coffin as Morgan is now contemplating retirement.

Morgan has so far amassed 700 runs in Tests and 7,701 and 2,458 runs in ODIs and T20Is, respectively. The left-hander has 16 hundreds overall and is known for his destructive approach with the bat in white-ball formats. Since taking over as England captain after Alastair Cook, he has played a humongous role in revamping the playing style of the English camp in shorter formats. England's gung-ho approach, under Morgan, led to a lot of success for the national side in the run-up to the 2019 ODI World Cup, which they won ultimately in a riveting final.

Under Morgan, England also reached the semi-finals of the 2017 Champions Trophy and ended as runners-up and semi-finalists in the last two editions of the T20 World Cup. If he retires, Jos Buttler -- serving as Morgan's deputy for long -- is likely to take charge of the white-ball sides ahead of this year's T20 World Cup, in Australia.

England white-ball skipper Eoin Morgan contemplating international retirement before India series: Report

England were without regular captain Eoin Morgan when they locked horns with a hapless Netherlands side in the third and final ODI at the VRA Cricket Ground, Amstelveen on June 22 (Wednesday). Despite being without Morgan, the Jos Buttler-led side continued their merry run versus the hosts and won the series finale by eight wickets, in pursuit of a moderate 245.

After fifties from Max ODowd, Bas de Leede and keeper-captain Scott Edwards propelled the Netherlands to 244 all-out in 49.2 overs, England chased down the target in just 30.1 overs courtesy of Jason Roy's unbeaten 101 and stand-in skipper Buttler's 64-ball 86*. Earlier, David Willey had shined with the ball, returning with 4 for 36.

During the run-chase, Roy and Buttler shared an unbeaten 163-run third-wicket stand. While Roy struck at 117.44, Buttler was at his attacking best. He struck 7 fours and 5 sixes, with one of his maximums making heads turn. Facing pacer Paul van Meekeren in the 29th over, Buttler smacked a delivery for a six despite the ball landing outside the pitch. Meekeren tried a slower one but the ball got stuck in his hands and after release, Buttler pounced on the white cherry by showing no mercy.

I am going to try and hit a lot more sixes, says Buttler after battering Netherlands

Eoin Morgan-led England have etched their name in history books by registering the highest ODI total on Friday (June 17), at VRA Cricket Ground, Amstelveen. Being asked to bat first on a batting-friendly track, England big-hitters made the most of the Netherlands' inexperienced bowling line-up as the current ODI champions have broken their own record and put on a mammoth total of 498/4 in 50 overs.

Thus, the world champions fell agonisingly short of the 500-run mark by just two runs. The foundation was laid for a big score, despite Jason Roy felling for 1, with an unbelievable 222-run second-wicket stand between centurions Phillip Salt (125) and Dawid Malan (122). The former struck at 131.18, with 14 fours and three sixes, whereas the left-hander Malan returned with a strike rate of 114.68. What followed was more mayhem for the hosts as in-form Jos Buttler and big-hitter Liam Livingstone -- both coming from a splendid IPL 2022 season -- smacked the bowlers to all parts of the ground.

With as many as 26 sixes overall, England also created a record for hitting most maximums in an ODI innings. Interestingly, the next two slots also belong to Morgan-led Three Lions.

Buttler ended with a mouth-watering 162 not out, with seven fours and 14 sixes at a strike rate of 231.43, whereas Livingstone was unbeaten on 66 off just 22 deliveries, striking at 300 with six fours and an equal number of maximums. This also became the third-such instance where a team saw three batters reaching the triple-figure mark in an ODI inning.

En route to the highest ODI score of 498, England leapfrogged the record of the highest total of 481 in 50-over cricket. In 2018, Morgan & Co. had gone berserk by scoring 481/6 in an ODI versus Tim Paine's Australia, at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. This time around, they have gone past their own total and are very much in line to touch the magical 500-run mark in the format.

Yorkshire County Cricket Club and a number of individuals have been charged following an investigation into racism claims made by former player Azeem Rafiq, the England and Wales Cricket Board said on Wednesday, without naming the people in question.

Rafiq, a former England under-19 captain of Pakistani descent, last year alleged that he had been a victim of institutional racism at the club. The scandal shook English cricket to its core and led to numerous changes in coaching and administrative personnel at Yorkshire.

James Anderson added another feather to his illustrious hat during the fourth and penultimate day of the second Test between England and New Zealand. On Monday (June 13), the 39-year-old claimed his 650th Test scalp by dismissing NZ skipper Tom Latham with a peach of a delivery.

After Trent Boult's 10th five-fer enabled NZ a vital 14-run first-innings lead, Latham & Co. went out to bat in their second essay and were jolted soon with the stand-in skipper being dismissed for 4. The left-hander left a delivery that angled in and hit the stumps as Anderson attained his 650th wicket in the purest format. Here's the video of the unplayable delivery by the veteran pacer:

There was total error in judgment from Latham as NZ were stunned early in their second essay after managing a slender lead in the second and penultimate Test, with the series on the line. On the other hand, here's a look at the top-five wicket-takers in Test cricket after Anderson claimed his 650th victim:

Muttiah Muralitharan - 800

Shane Warne - 708

James Anderson - 650*

Anil Kumble - 619

Glenn McGrath - 563

Thus, Anderson remains the highest wicket-taker in the format among pacers with the second-best -- among active bowlers -- being his teammate Stuart Broad (who has accounted for 543 scalps so far).

After Anderson's early strike, NZ went to lunch at 27/1, with an overall lead of 41. Earlier in the morning session of Day 4, England were dismissed for 539 courtesy of Joe Root (176), Ollie Pope (146) and Ben Foakes' 56. Kiwis have to bat well in the second session to prevent a collapse and then look for setting up a challenging target.

Eng vs NZ: James Anderson claims 650th Test scalp with peach of a delivery to dismiss Tom Latham - WATCH

England pacer Stuart Broad has rubbished the speculations of a rift with former Test skipper Joe Root over his omission from the tour of West Indies earlier this year, remarking that it would be pathetic if he was to fall out with someone over not being picked in the squad. Leading English pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad were left out of the squad for the three-Test series against the Windies. The series ended in a 1-0 defeat for the English and led to Root resigning from his role as Test captain.

"Joe and I spoke at length when he stood down as captain and I said to him how much he has meant to me as a captain, and what a privilege it was playing under him. I told him I hope he really enjoys the next few years. All that pressure has gone now. He is already a legend of the game, so he can just go out there and enjoy it," Sky Sports quoted the pacer as saying. "Joe and I are great friends. And I have always been someone who can distinguish between business and pleasure. I cannot fall out with someone because they do not pick me in a team, that would be a bit pathetic," he added.

The pace duo made its return to the squad for the home series against New Zealand and was pretty instrumental in England`s five-wicket win in the first Test at Lord`s in Ben Stokes` first assignment as Test skipper. The 35-year-old Broad picked up four scalps in the match, including two in one over in the second innings that turned the match in England`s favour. "It`s been one of the most fun weeks we have had as a team. I started this season not knowing if I would pull on the England shirt again, I was just enjoying every day for what it was. Jimmy [Anderson] turns 40 this year, four years ago was he thinking 2018 might be his last at Old Trafford? Probably not. I will attack this week with the same mindset: I will walk out on that first day, look around the stands, and know how lucky I am to be there," he said.

"These last two years, what was it, one win in 17 I never took Test wins for granted but there was a period where they came more often than not and your attention can switch to the next game. Stuff that, enjoy the win and then get ready after that," he added.

Broad remarked that starting the Stokes and McCullum era with a win is huge for the side. Coming to the first Test, England won the match by five wickets, chasing down the target of 277. England finished at 279/5 in 78.5 overs. Root`s unbeaten 115 took the team to a victory. Earlier, batting first, New Zealand was bowled out for 132. Only all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme (42*) and Tim Southee (26) could offer some resistance as debutant Matty Potts (13/4) and James Anderson (66/4) shook the NZ batting lineup with their pace.

In the second innings, England became victims of the pace of Boult (3/21) and Southee (4/55) and was bundled out for 141, gaining a thin nine-run lead. In the third innings, NZ looked in trouble at 56-4 but Daryl Mitchell (108) and Tom Blundell (96) turned the match on their head and performed a brilliant rescue act to help their side reach 285/10. This helped set up a target of 277 for England. England will take New Zealand in the second test on June 10 in Trent Bridge Cricket Stadium.

England pacer Stuart Broad has rubbished the speculations of a rift with former Test skipper Joe Root over his omission from the tour of West Indies earlier this year, remarking that it would be pathetic if he was to fall out with someone over not being picked in the squad.

England speedster Stuart Broad dismisses speculations of rift with ex-Test captain Joe Root

England and New Zealand were involved in a humdinger of a clash when both sides met each other in the series opener of the three-match Test series at Lord's last week. In a riveting clash, Kane Williamson-led New Zealand set up a challenging 277-run target for the Ben Stokes-led hosts, after being dismissed for 132 in the first essay, and had reduced the home team to 69/4 before former skipper Joe Root's sublime 115 rescued England and took them to a memorable five-wicket win over the Kiwis.

Despite giving up the captaincy in the format, Root continued to lead the charge with the bat and his 26th Test ton also helped him reach the 10,000-run mark in Tests. He became the second Englishman, after Sir Alastair Cook, and 14th batsman overall to achieve the illustrious feat. Such has been Root's form that he has amassed 2192 runs including 9 centuries in the last 18 months, whereas his competitors such as Virat Kohli, Williamson and Steve Smith haven't hit a single ton since early January 2021.

Thus, former Indian stumper Saba Karim lavished huge praise on Root. Joe Root has left the other three batters far behind in the last two years. Whether we talk about consistency, technique or temperament, in all these aspects Joe Root is above everyone at the moment."

"And we are not discussing one more thing, that if we see England's batting, other than Root, we are not seeing any other name coming to the forefront. It means Joe Root has single-handedly scored runs and hit centuries, he has not got any support from the other end," Karim added.

Root will be eager to continue in a similar stead and guide England to an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series when the second and penultimate Test starts on June 10 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.

England`s cricket team are in desperate need of a lift and new coach Brendon McCullum vowed on Friday to bring some enthusiasm into the camp as he starts his role ahead of the first test against New Zealand at Lord`s next week.

McCullum replaced Chris Silverwood who left the role in February after England were thrashed 4-0 in the Ashes in Australia. The 40-year-old, who scored 6,453 test runs for New Zealand in his playing career, only has coaching experience in the Indian Premier League but was confident he could kickstart a turnaround for a side who have managed one win in their last 17 tests.

"My job will be to try to take away some of the pressures initially, bring in some enthusiasm. Naturally, when there`s some change, guys kind of get a bit of a lift anyway, so hopefully that will translate to performances early as well," McCullum told a media roundtable at Lord`s. "But first I`ve got to have a look around and see where things sort of sit currently and try and identify some areas where we might need to make some changes at times too, but I`m very much looking forward to the challenge."

There has already been a change in hierarchy on the field as Ben Stokes takes over as captain, succeeding Joe Root, who led the side in a record 64 tests over five years but stepped down after the March 1-0 series defeat in West Indies. McCullum captained New Zealand in 31 tests and was part of the resurgence that led to them becoming a real force in the long game, eventually culminating in their winning the World Test Championship last year under his successor Kane Williamson.

With Stokes being such a talisman for England, McCullum said their relationship would be key in dragging the team up the test rankings from sixth. "I think the captain-coach relationship in cricket is vital. I think there needs to be a really tight bond there," he said.

"You don`t have to be the best of mates, but I think you have to have a real clear sort of vision of where you want the team to go and you both align with that, and then when you have that, then you can try and just fill the gaps. "It`s my job as a coach to fill the gaps for Stokes. I want him to be the most authentic person that he can be, lead the way that he wants to be. There`ll be times where I might have to pull him back and times where I might have to push him forward."

One problem has been how to blend youth with experience, with veteran fast bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad recalled to the side following their absence from the West Indies series. McCullum said he would sit down and chat to both about their future plans but that they would still be valuable assets on and off the field.

"We should enjoy the fact we`ve got 280 test matches sitting in our bowling unit and guys who have been there and done it before. It would be great if they were at the forefront of the next kind of development on the side," he said. Asked if he could lead England to being the number one test side in the world, McCullum pleaded for patience. "Yeah, definitely. That`s what we`re all aspiring to do. I think it`s going to take a bit of time and we should hopefully get a natural uplift and results straight away and New Zealand`s a good cricket team, but if we play properly, we`ll give ourselves a good chance," he said.

After New Zealand, England will host South Africa in another three match series in August-September and also play a one-off test against India in July.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Wednesday announced that it has appointed Matthew Mott as England Men`s white-ball head coach. Mott, 48, has signed a four-year agreement and is expected to be in place for England`s three-match ODI series against The Netherlands in Amsterdam next month. The ECB`s selection panel of Chief Executive Officer Tom Harrison, Managing Director of England`s Men`s Cricket Rob Key, Strategic Adviser Andrew Strauss and Performance Director Mo Bobat unanimously agreed that he was the standout candidate for the role during the competitive interview process.

Mott has led the Australian Women`s Team since 2015 and during his seven years in charge has overseen one of the world`s best winning records across the international sport. Under his leadership, Australia Women have won consecutive ICC T20 World Cups, this year`s ICC Women`s 50-Over World Cup and are undefeated in four Ashes series. Mott has also helped Australia win 26 consecutive one-day internationals, a record in either the men`s or women`s game. Before taking up his post with Australia women in 2015, Mott worked as Head Coach of New South Wales - leading them to victory in the Champions League T20 tournament in 2009 - and then coached Glamorgan, reaching the final of the Yorkshire Bank 40 in 2013, before working as a consultant for Ireland during the 2015 ICC Men`s World Cup.

England Men`s White-Ball Head Coach, Matthew Mott in a statement said: "I am delighted to accept the opportunity to take this white-ball role with England. Whilst I am Australian, I have deep connections, and several of my closest friends are in the UK, having spent considerable time in Scotland, Wales and England, both as a player and coach."When this role became available, I was attracted by the chance to work with such an established and successful team under the astute leadership of Eoin Morgan and now Rob Key, whom I have always admired as an excellent cricket mind." Mott opined, "The idea of the split roles and the chance to work alongside Brendon McCullum in his red-ball role is an opportunity that I am incredibly enthusiastic about and certainly provides the right balance for my family as we embark on this exciting journey."

"It was always going to take something special to leave the role that I have loved for the past seven years with the Australian Women`s team. However, I genuinely believe that the time is right to play a role in helping the England Men`s ODI and T20 group continue to evolve as one of the best teams in the world. I am fully aware that this team has been functioning well and part of my initial plan is to work with the playing group and support staff on how we can firstly maintain, then enhance, the success they have started to build over the past few years." He further added, "Since the excitement of accepting this role, I, like many people around the world, have been trying to come to terms with the tragic loss of my great mate Andrew Symonds. The support of his beautiful family and close friends in the coming days will be vitally important, so I respectfully request some time to process his passing and the immense loss before making any further comment on the role at this stage."

A lot has changed in England cricket in the past few weeks. Ben Stokes replaced Joe Root as the England Test captain after the latter resigned from the top post in mid-April. Later, Brendon McCullum pipped Gary Kirsten to be named England Test side's head coach for a four-year period.

As England embark upon a new journey in whites, they are set to meet New Zealand in a three-match Test series starting next month at home. Ahead of the home series, the marquee Test players are involved in the ongoing County Championship. In the Division One game between Lancashire and Yorkshire, the likes of James Anderson and ex-skipper Root's battle was keenly awaited where the veteran pacer rattled his former captain's stumps with a peach of a delivery.

Twenty-three-year-old Potts has been in impressive form in the County Championship. He is the season`s leading bowler, with 35 wickets and four five-wicket hauls, including his most recent return of seven for 40 in Durham`s win over Glamorgan. Pace duo James Anderson, Stuart Broad return as England announce squad for first two Tests vs NZ

On Thursday (May 12), the England Cricket Board (ECB) announced former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum as the head coach of England's Test team. Earlier, they were reports of former South African opener Gary Kirsten getting the top job, however, McCullum pipped Kirsten to bag the post.

For the unversed, McCullum has coached the likes of Trinbago Knight Riders and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, however, the England job will be his maiden full-fledged role as a national team coach. He has signed a four-year deal with the ECB and his tenure starts with England's home series versus New Zealand, i.e. the current World Test champions.

In his column for The Telegraph, the 2005-06 Ashes-winning England skipper Michael Vaughan reacted to McCullum's appointment. He wrote, "If English cricket has overlooked someone like Gary Kirsten for a second time, I do find it incredibly bizarre. I don't see how we have made that call twice. He is the perfect mentor, thinker, and cultural driver who has done it before and has the t-shirt. What England have gone for in Brendon is exciting and a big name, but it is a big risk as well."

"I am all for attacking play and being aggressive (a brand of cricket McCullum mostly relies upon), but I don’t think this England Test team is in a position to play that way at the moment. They have to take small steps first and get used to playing long, hard periods of Test cricket. And then in time, if you get a group of players with a lot of confidence, they can play more flamboyantly," he added.

It will be interesting to see how McCullum runs the England Test team, which is in a disarray after disastrous Ashes 2021-22 edition and a series defeat to hosts West Indies, in the Caribbean island. Michael Vaughan reacts as Brendon McCullum pips Gary Kirsten to be named England's Test coach

Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has been appointed head coach of England`s test team, the country`s cricket board (ECB) said on Thursday. McCullum replaced Chris Silverwood who left the role in February after England were thrashed 4-0 in the Ashes in Australia, with Paul Collingwood stepping in as a caretaker coach.

McCullum, 40, is currently in charge of Indian Premier League side Kolkata Knight Riders but the ECB said he will be in place to start his role when New Zealand visit for a three-test series starting at Lord`s on June 2. "We are delighted to confirm Brendon as England men`s test head coach. It has been a real privilege to get to know him and understand his views and vision for the game," ECB managing director Rob Key said in a statement.

"He has a recent history of changing cricket culture and environments for the better, and I believe he is the person to do that for England`s red-ball cricket. "We were incredibly fortunate to have a seriously strong list of quality candidates for the post, with Brendon demonstrating he was our number one choice."
Former South Africa and India head coach Gary Kirsten had been linked with the role and Collingwood was also considered.

McCullum played the last of his 101 tests at Christchurch in 2016 against Australia, where he hit the fastest ever century in the format (54 balls). He finished his career with 6,453 runs including 12 hundreds and 31 half-centuries.

He will be tasked with working alongside newly-appointed test captain Ben Stokes to get England out of a slump after the team won only one of their last 17 matches, with Key describing the pairing as a "formidable coach and captain partnership".

"In taking this role on, I am acutely aware of the significant challenges the team faces at present, and I strongly believe in my ability to help the team emerge as a stronger force once we`ve confronted them head-on," McCullum said.

Ben Stokes goes berserk with incredible ton on return to first-class cricket, slams 34 runs in an over - Watch

Newly-appointed England captain Ben Stokes has indicated that pace-bowling stalwarts James Anderson and Stuart Broad will make a quick return to the Test squad for the three-match series at home against New Zealand starting on June 2 at Lord`s. Anderson and Broad were overlooked for England`s tour against West Indies earlier this year as selectors instead opted to provide greater opportunities to the next generation of pace bowlers. England fell to a 1-0 series defeat against West Indies during the series and star batter Joe Root stood down as skipper shortly after the team returned home.

England have since confirmed Rob Key as the new managing director of their men`s team and appointed Stokes as Test captain, with the short-term future of their two leading wicket-takers now looking rosier ahead of a busy summer schedule. Speaking for the first time since his appointment as captain on Tuesday, Stokes said he wants to bring a winning culture back to England and that he plans to have Anderson and Broad by his side this summer. "I want to win games of cricket for England. The best way to do that is picking your best XI and in my opinion if Stuart Broad and James Anderson are fit they are available for selection."ICC quoted Stokes as saying.

Stokes indicated he would have a major say in deciding who would be appointed vice-captain of the Test team but swiftly ruled out Root as an option to take up the key role as deputy."I want selfless cricketers who make decisions based on winning the game of cricket for England. At the end of the day the most important thing is winning. I want to be part of a team that has that real mentality, that doesn`t take a backwards step," Stokes added.

Ben Stokes succeeds Joe Root to become England's full-time Test captain

Gary Kirsten is currently serving as the batting coach of the Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2022. However, he is set to take over as England's Test team's coach as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is looking for a total revamp. ECB's new managing director Rob Key and Kirsten's talk have reached the advanced stage and an announcement is likely to follow suit in the next couple of weeks as the interview rounds for red-ball and white-ball coaching roles will kick off on May 9.

According to the Daily Mail, Kirsten is willing to part ways with the GT franchise post the ongoing IPL season in India. However, with England set to host New Zealand in a Test series -- starting from June 02 -- and Gujarat being a strong contender to enter the IPL playoffs, the former South African opener won't get much time for a smooth transition into his new role. If Gujarat reach the final, to be held on May 29, it will give very less time for Kirsten to interact with the England Test squad.

While Kirsten looks set to take over as England's red-ball coach, Simon Katich, and Ottis Gibson are also two known names who are in contention for either red or white-ball coaching roles. Thus, nothing is absolutely final as yet. Talking about Kirsten, he certainly has an edge as he has led India to the 2011 ODI World Cup title as their head coach and also guided South Africa to the No. 1 Test rankings in his coaching career.

Gary Kirsten set to be England's Test coach, Ben Stokes to succeed Joe Root: Report

England's World Cup-winning bowler Anya Shrubsole has announced her retirement from international cricket at the age of 30, the country`s cricket board (ECB) said on Thursday.
