There is another feature on social media platform X formerly known as Twitter is on its way to becoming an everything app and this new edition will be the audio and video call feature. Elon Musk is here to challenge all kinds of digital businesses and is here to disrupt the way each platform is designed.

Elon Musk to transform X into a super app with calling feature

As the infamous blue bird – Larry is freed and replaced by a cold white “X”; Twitter’s identity without its iconic bird is no longer the same. On October 28 last year, Elon Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion, which according to media reports is a part of his mission to build an “everything app.”

Twitter has now been rebranded to X, with its logo changed and its colour scheme replaced from blue to black. Reports said that the move could potentially change Twitter’s user base and maybe even alienate them from the platform that they knew so well, a couple of months ago.

But what was Twitter like, when it was founded initially?

In this story, we map out the journey of Twitter, from when it was founded in 2006 to how it transformed into “X” today.

The first tweet

Odeo, a podcasting company started in 2004 by Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass, gave rise to Twitter.

The leadership of Odeo believed that the company could not compete with Apple and that a fresh strategy was required when Apple announced in 2005 that it would include podcasts to its digital media application iTunes. When asked about any intriguing side projects they were working on, Jack Dorsey, an engineer at Odeo, suggested a short message service (SMS) where users could post brief blog-like updates with friends. Glass suggested Twttr as a name.

On March 21, 2006, Dorsey posted the first tweet “just setting up my twttr”, and in July of that same year, Twitter officially launched. Williams, Stone, and Dorsey founded Obvious Corp. in October 2006 after purchasing Odeo.

After the platform was introduced during the South by Southwest music and technology convention in Austin, Texas in March 2007, interest in it significantly surged. Due to an inflow of venture cash, Twitter, Inc. was established as a corporate entity the following month, and Dorsey was appointed as the company’s first chief executive officer (CEO).

Twitter over the years

From its inception in 2006 to its peak in 2021, Twitter underwent a remarkable evolution.

2007-2011

In 2007, Twitter secured its initial funding and gained prominence during the South by Southwest conference. 2008 saw the departure of co-founder Jack Dorsey as CEO, followed by the appointment of Evan Williams. Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement in 2009 catapulted Twitter into the mainstream. By 2010, NASA had astronauts tweeting from space, but management turmoil continued as Dick Costolo replaced Williams as CEO. In 2011, Twitter became a vital tool during the Arab Spring and broke news worldwide.

2012-2015

In 2012, Twitter reached 200 million active users, and even President Barack Obama employed the platform for major announcements. The company went public in 2013, with its key figures amassing substantial wealth. However, slowing user growth and stock fluctuations marked 2014. Twitter struggled against tech giants like Google and Facebook, prompting Jack Dorsey’s return as CEO in 2015.

2016-2018

Rumours of acquisition swirled in 2016, while Twitter faced criticism for enabling the spread of misleading information, exemplified by Donald Trump’s use of the platform. In 2017, Twitter’s stock rebounded, with Trump leading the platform’s conversations. The following year, Dorsey and Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg testified about election interference, and concerns of political bias emerged.

2019-2021

In 2019, Twitter’s influence on markets and its role in public discourse were evident as Trump’s tweets correlated with market fluctuations. The year also saw a meeting between Trump and Dorsey. In 2020, Twitter grappled with the COVID-19 infodemic and a security breach involving high-profile accounts. Finally, in 2021, Twitter took a dramatic turn by permanently banning Trump due to his involvement in the Capitol riots. Shortly thereafter, Jack Dorsey stepped down as CEO, succeeded by Parag Agrawal, marking a pivotal moment in the platform’s history. Twitter had evolved from a fledgling social media startup to a global force, shaping discourse, politics, and news dissemination.

The era of X

On October 28, 2022, Elon Musk completed a $44 billion transaction to take Twitter Inc. private. He then assumed control of the significant social media site by promptly sacking its senior executives.

He tweeted, “The bird is freed,” in a reference to his wish to see the corporation loosen its restrictions on what can be posted.

Major changes

Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter ushered in a wave of substantial policy changes on the platform.

These changes ranged from the imposition of daily tweet limits, varying from 10,000 posts for verified users to 500 posts for new unverified users, to the requirement for users to log in or create an account to access user profiles and tweets, aimed at safeguarding user data.

The platform also allowed publishers to charge users on a per-article basis, and content subscriptions became part of its revenue strategy, with X taking a 10 percent cut after the first year.

Emphasising transparency, Musk open-sourced “literally everything”. But he also banned accounts linked to rival social media platforms.

A significant restructuring of staff occurred, resulting in mass layoffs and leadership changes, including Linda Yaccarino becoming the CEO. X was merged with Musk’s firm, X Corp, and a move towards AI to combat manipulation of public opinion was initiated.

Twitter also underwent a significant rebranding, emerging as X. This rebranding was accompanied by the unveiling of a new logo, replacing the iconic Twitter bird. The transition aimed to align the platform with Musk’s vision of creating a multifunctional “everything app” akin to WeChat.

However, this transformation prompted mixed reactions and a flurry of memes from users, questioning the decision to replace the well-known bird logo.

Navigating the future of Twitter (X)

Musk’s future plans include transforming X into an “ultra-app” with video and voice calls, introducing a payments feature, and charging for two-factor authentication to enhance security.

As Musk makes the push for Twitter/X to transform into an “everything app”, recent events suggest that the platform will soon assist companies with employment, emerging as a potential competitor to LinkedIn.

This comes after Musk wrote on X, “People send me LinkedIn links sometimes, but the cringe level is so high that I just can't bring myself to use it, so I ask for the resume or bio to be emailed. We will make sure that the X competitor to LinkedIn is cool.”

Flashback Friday: Looking at the evolution of Twitter – From Larry the bird to X

In an effort to compete with business websites like LinkedIn, Billionaire Elon Musk-owned 'X' has added a new hiring tool, which allows verified businesses to post job listings on their profiles.

In response to a post on 'X', which asked if there's anything worse than LinkedIn, Musk wrote, “People send me LinkedIn links sometimes, but the cringe level is so high that I just can't bring myself to use it. So I ask for the resume or bio to be emailed. We will make sure that the X competitor to LinkedIn is cool.”

Musk also said in another comment that LinkedIn is the “most cringe platform on the internet."

The tweet quickly gathered a lot of attention, with people on social media responding right away. “The worst part is people just making stuff up,” one user remarked. According to the user, many people use titles on LinkedIn that are completely fictitious and unrelated to what they actually do for the firm.

Musk had hinted about launching the recruiting tool in May. When a user asked whether 'x' will offer dating services, Musk responded, “Interesting idea, maybe jobs too.”

The latest development seems like yet another step in the direction of the 'X' becoming the all-encompassing app that Elon Musk originally talked about.

According to a recent TechCrunch article, 'X' purchased a job-matching tech start-up called Laskie in May, marking the platform’s first acquisition since Musk purchased it. It is a great possibility that the platform’s ability to create and release the new functionality was aided by this acquisition.

It is a great possibility that the platform’s ability to create and release the new functionality was aided by this acquisition. WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Viasat Global Communications company has over one billion dollars in Satellite in trouble and space insurers expect market-rattling claims. The company's One Billion Dollar Wise had three American satellites that expanded fixed Broadband coverage and competed with Elon Musk Starlink had an unanticipated antenna deployment issue back in April.

Elon Musk's Tesla Inc will soon defend itself for the first time against allegations that the company's Autopilot driver assistant feature led to the death of multiple people.

The upcoming trial as per Reuters will be a major test of Tesla Chief Executive Musk's assertions about the technology.

The trials and Tesla

Tesla currently faces two trials, however, more are likely to follow.

The first, a civil lawsuit, is scheduled for mid-September at a California state court. It alleges that Tesla's autopilot system caused a man named Micah Lee's Model 3 vehicle to suddenly veer off a highway east of Los Angeles. As per the lawsuit, Tesla knowingly sold the car with defective safety systems.

In 2019, the car which was travelling at the speed of 65 miles per hour, in a matter of seconds, crashed into a palm tree and burst into flames. The crash killed Lee, while the other two passengers, including an 8-year-old boy, were seriously injured.

The second trial is scheduled for October in a Florida state court. This one, also from 2019, caused Stephen Banner's Model 3 to drive under an 18-wheeler big rig truck, which sheared off the Tesla's roof and killed the owner.

What Tesla has to say

Tesla has repeatedly denied liability in both accidents and has blamed driver error. Musk's company says that "there are no self-driving cars on the road today," and claims that the Autopilot feature is safe when monitored by humans. In the Lee case, it also claimed that the driver (Lee) was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Reuters reports that these civil proceedings will probably reveal fresh evidence about what Musk and Tesla knew about the Autopilot feature's capabilities and deficiencies.

Previously in April, Tesla won a bellwether trial — a small consolidation of similar cases taken from a larger group and tried first. The company at the time claimed that it told its drivers that despite the 'Autopilot' and Full Self-Driving' names, the technology requires human monitoring.

As per experts in the upcoming cases, the stakes are high for Tesla. "If Tesla backs up a lot of wins in these cases, I think they're going to get more favourable settlements in other cases," suggested Matthew Wansley, former General Counsel at nuTonomy, an automated driving startup, and currently an Associate Professor of Law at the Cardozo School of Law.

Bryant Walker Smith, a law professor at the University of South Carolina, says that "a big loss for Tesla, especially with a big damages award" could "dramatically shape the narrative going forward."

Elon Musk sets the tone for an 'X' competitor to LinkedIn

Vivek Ramaswamy, Republican Party hopeful for nomination in US Presidential Election 2023, has said that he would want Elon Musk to be his adviser should he become US president. Ramaswamy's words came as a response to a question asked during a town hall meet.

Ramaswamy said if he became US president, he would want to bring in "a blank fresh impression."

“I’ve enjoyed getting to know better Elon Musk recently, I expect him to be an interesting adviser of mine because he laid off 75% of the employees at Twitter,” he said.

When NBC News asked him about his communication with Elon Musk other than appearance on Twitter Spaces, Ramaswamy reportedly said that it has only been interaction through social media.

Musk has had positive words for Ramaswamy. On August 17, Musk reposted an interview between Ramaswamy and Tucker Carlson on X (formerly Twitter) and called Ramaswamy "a very promising candidate".

Ramaswamy has said in past that he admires the mass layoffs Musk undertook after he took over Twitter last year. He has also been vocal about his plan to shut down Department of Education, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

He has spoken of mass changes across federal government and said, “mass layoffs are absolutely what I will bring to the D.C. bureaucracy.”

NBC reported that Musk did not respond when asked whether he would like to serve as Ramaswamy wants him to if he becomes president.

Though Musk has had positive words for Ramaswamy, he has stated that he does not agree with the latter's views on climate change.

Ramaswamy said in the recent republican debate that "climate change agenda" is a "hoax".

“It is possibly overstated in the short term, but we should be concerned about it long term,” Musk wrote on X.

Elon Musk unveils new job hiring feature on X for verified organisations

The US Justice Department on Thursday (August 24) sued Elon Musk's SpaceX over hiring practices. In a statement, the Justice Department said that it filed a lawsuit against SpaceX for discriminating against asylees and refugees in hiring. "The lawsuit alleges that, from at least September 2018 to May 2022, SpaceX routinely discouraged asylees and refugees from applying and refused to hire or consider them, because of their citizenship status, in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA)," the statement said.

The statement added that over several years, SpaceX wrongly claimed that under federal regulations known as “export control laws,” it could hire only American citizens and lawful permanent residents, sometimes referred to as “green card holders.”

"Export control laws impose no such hiring restrictions," the department further said.

The investigation

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said on Thursday the department's investigation found that SpaceX failed to fairly consider or hire asylees and refugees because of their citizenship status and imposed what amounted to a ban on their hire regardless of their qualification, in violation of federal law.

"Our investigation also found that SpaceX recruiters and high-level officials took actions that actively discouraged asylees and refugees from seeking work opportunities at the company," Clarke added.

The discrimination during stages of hiring process

The lawsuit alleges that SpaceX discriminated against asylees and refugees based on citizenship status at multiple stages of the hiring process. SpaceX discouraged asylees and refugees from applying for open positions, it failed to consider applications submitted by asylees and refugees, and it also hired only American citizens and lawful permanent residents, from September 2018 to September 2020.

"The United States seeks fair consideration and back pay for asylees and refugees who were deterred or denied employment at SpaceX due to the alleged discrimination. The US Justice Department on Thursday (August 24) sued Elon Musk's SpaceX over hiring practices. In a statement, the Justice Department said that it filed a lawsuit against SpaceX for discriminating against asylees and refugees in hiring.

The statement added that over several years, SpaceX wrongly claimed that under federal regulations known as “export control laws,” it could hire only American citizens and lawful permanent residents, sometimes referred to as “green card holders.” "Export control laws impose no such hiring restrictions," the department further said. The investigation Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said on Thursday the department's investigation found that SpaceX failed to fairly consider or hire asylees and refugees because of their citizenship status and imposed what amounted to a ban on their hire regardless of their qualification, in violation of federal law. "Our investigation also found that SpaceX recruiters and high-level officials took actions that actively discouraged asylees and refugees from seeking work opportunities at the company," Clarke added. The discrimination during stages of hiring process The lawsuit alleges that SpaceX discriminated against asylees and refugees based on citizenship status at multiple stages of the hiring process. The United States also seeks civil penalties in an amount to be determined by the court and policy changes to ensure it complies with the INA’s nondiscrimination mandate going forward," the statement further said. Elon Musk reacts to Prigozhin's possible death: 'Took longer than I expected'

What began as a whirlwind success, crossing over 100 million users within five days of its launch has now hit a stumbling block with a significant drop in user engagement. We delve into the fascinating story of threads, the fastest-growing app ever that's now facing challenges in retaining its audience.

Threads vs X: The rivalry intensifies as Threads gets a web version | WION

Social media platform X, formerly Twitter, is set to undergo a significant alteration in the way news links are presented, marking another major shift led by its owner, Elon Musk, that could impact news publishers on the site.

The news initially surfaced via a report by Fortune on Monday (August 21), and it was subsequently confirmed by Elon Musk himself in a post later that day. Musk stated, "This is coming from me directly. Will greatly improve the aesthetics [sic]." Under this new approach, the platform will no longer display headlines and accompanying text from news links, showing only the primary image. This adjustment limits a user's ability to preview the content before clicking.

Presently, news links are presented on users' timelines as "cards," featuring an image, source address, and a condensed headline. This format has been effective in attracting clicks and helping publishers engage readers.

Encouraging premium service adoption

This alteration could be an effort to encourage more users to sign up for X's premium service. By truncating the links, users might be more inclined to include additional text with their posts. The premium service permits a single post to have up to 25,000 characters.

According to the report, this was SpaceX’s 15th launch and landing for this particular booster just one short of its reuse record held by two different Falcon 9 first stages. In a later update, SpaceX took to the microblogging platform and said "Deployment of 21 @Starlink satellites confirmed." So far, Elon Musk’s SpaceX has launched around 5,000 Starlink satellites to low Earth orbit (LEO) with the permission to deploy as many as 12,000 Starlink satellites.
Elon Musk is undoubtedly one of the most followed persons on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, which he owns. He has around 153.9 million followers at the time of writing this report.

He has been one of the prolific users of the social media app, even before he bought it last October for a whopping $44 billion.

Over the months, he often boasted about how the number of users coming to X and consuming content increased.

However, recent data collected by third-party researcher Travis Brown has given some reality check, suggesting that the picture isn’t as rosy as depicted by Musk.

The data, which was reviewed by Mashable, shows that around 42 per cent of Musk’s own followers, or 65.3 million accounts, have zero followers on their account, indicating that they may be inactive.

Further, more than 72 per cent, or nearly 112 million, of these users following Musk have less than 10 followers on their account.

And as far as consuming content on the platform is concerned, over 62.5 million of Musk followers have zero tweets.

This includes users who have deleted all of their tweets by the time this data was collected over the past few weeks as well as accounts that have never before tweeted.

More than 100 million Musk followers have less than 10 tweets posted to their accounts.

Fake accounts?

Recently, the Tesla CEO claimed that X now has more than 540 million "monthly users".

Another interesting detail that has emerged from the data is exactly when his followers created their accounts.

Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter on October 27, 2022. Out of all of Musk's current followers, more than 25 per cent, or 38.9 million, were created on or after that date.

The average number of followers for all 153 million accounts following Musk is just around 187. However, Brown tells Mashable that the follower "distributions are so skewed" that the averages aren't "very meaningful" here.

The data has further shown how many of Musk’s followers subscribe to X Premium, previously known as Twitter Blue that was re-launched with a price tag of $8 a month.

Only around 453,000 Musk followers or 0.3 percent subscribe to X Premium, the data shows.

Earlier this week, Mashable reported earlier that there were around 830,000 X Premium subscribers in total based on another data set compiled by Brown.

‘Very promising candidate’: Musk endorses Vivek Ramaswamy’s US presidential bid twice in a day

The nocturnally empowered journalist in me often gets up late in the night to search a hashtag on Twitter, now called 'X' — #TomorrowsPapersToday — to get a sense of the headlines dominating the frontpage of newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic.

The nocturnally empowered journalist in me often gets up late in the night to search a hashtag on Twitter, now called 'X' — #TomorrowsPapersToday — to get a sense of the headlines dominating the frontpage of newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic.

The nocturnally empowered journalist in me often gets up late in the night to search a hashtag on Twitter, now called 'X' — #TomorrowsPapersToday — to get a sense of the headlines dominating the frontpage of newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic. For nearly a month now, I am often left staring at my smartphone in a short-lived moment of cluelessness. I unlock my phone and among the dozens of apps that stare back, the blue-bird logo of X's predecessor Twitter no longer exists. Twitter's becoming of 'X' rings a bell and finally I am able to complete my micro-blogging needs on 'X'. Twitter became 'X' in July 2023. With that, its billionaire owner Elon Musk replaced its blue bird logo with an interim fan-made "𝕏" logo. Twitter or X? Life without signs of Larry the bird is no longer the same

Social media application TweetDeck, which has now been changed to X Pro, on Wednesday (August 16) transformed into a paid service that would now be available to users via yearly or a monthly subscription charge.

On Tuesday (August 15), some users, who attempted to access X Pro, were being diverted to a paid-subscription sign-up page that asked them to pay an annual fee of $84.

In the month of July, X announced that TweetDeck, which is a popular application that allows users to access and monitor multiple accounts at a single time, would be available to only "verified" account holders from the month of August.

The popular social media firm, which was taken over by billionaire Elon Musk in the year 2022, has been announcing new ways to make profits. After he bought Twitter, now known as X, Musk went on a massive layoff spree to cut down expenses and also increased its paid subscription fee.

Last week, the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Linda Yaccarino said that the organisation was "close" to breaking even and would strengthen staffing that had been slashed by Musk.

The verified users of platform X are mostly the ones that have paid to receive the blue checkmark, though Musk has gifted the verification symbol to some.

TweetDeck, which was launched over a decade ago, shows messages in columns and its search and posting functions operate differently from the website or the application.

X may soon add ID verification to tackle bots

Meanwhile, social media giant X, formerly known as Twitter, may soon add ID verification features for preventing impersonation. According to a report by Engadget on Thursday (August 17), app researcher Nima Owji shared a screenshot on X which showed that the platform is working on an additional verification feature that requires users to upload a copy of their government-issued ID and snap a selfie.

"X keeps working on the ID verification. You should upload a photo of your ID and take a live selfie," Owji said late Thursday. He had first spotted an “ID-verified” badge on Musk’s profile earlier in August. “Verify your account by providing government-issued ID,” the X description reads. “This usually takes about 5 minutes,” it adds.

X to address shadowbanning soon: Musk

X owner Elon Musk says that the social media giant will address shadowbanning soon. Shadowbanning would not outrightly ban users, but make changes that ensure their content is no longer circulated and kept out of public view.

After taking over Twitter last year, Musk attempted to prove that shadowbanning was a common practice on the social media network. He insisted that users should have the right to know if they’ve been shadowbanned.

X puts social media application X Pro, formerly known as TweetDeck, behind paywall

X, formerly known as Twitter is slowing down access to certain websites. It is delaying the opening of various links by five seconds. Interestingly, the targeted links belong to websites such as Times, Reuters, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, etc., which are on Elon Musk's bad side. Molly gambhir tells you more.
